TIME TO VOTE

THE UPCOMING COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTION COULD REDEFINE HIDDEN HILLS

Voting is one of the most important ways we can express our voice. The Secret Ballot for the upcoming Hidden Hills Community Association (HHCA) Board of Directors Election will be in mailboxes soon. Six candidates have applied for three open Board of Directors positions, including Linda Raznick (Incumbent), David Stanley, Eric Epstein, Bill Breindel, Brian Goldstein, & Jeff Harris. The candidates will be available for questioning at the HHCA scheduled Virtual Meet the Candidates Forum at 6:00pm on November 10, 2021.

The HHCA is composed of a sevenmember nonpartisan Board of Directors, all of whom are volunteers and property owners. The HHCA is a private nonprofit organization responsible for reviewing and approving construction on or modification of any of the Hidden Hills 658+ home sites. In addition, it collects an annual assessment from the homeowners for maintaining all of the common areas, which include six miles of roads, three gate houses, 25 miles of bridle trails, three community riding arenas, four tennis courts, a competitionsize pool, recreation center, and a 99-seat performing arts/movie theater.

WHY IS THIS ELECTION SO CRITICAL?

It’s more essential now than ever to cast your ballot. As we know, living behind the gates of our city is coveted. The original planners created a “residential area of open feeling and country atmosphere with distant views, deep setbacks and wide side yards.” A benefit of the HHCA is that it acts as a safeguard for property values within the

community by mandating landscaping, property maintenance, architectural guidelines, and regulations to ensure that the Standards are preserved. One of the most important features of our Association is that the Architectural Committee has power and authority to approve and enforce projects over virtually every aspect of one’s property.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND THE INTENTIONS OF THE CANDIDATES?

At the Virtual Meet the Candidates Forum on November 10, all six candidates will deliver opening statements and be asked questions submitted by residents, to be moderated by General Manager Cary Brackett. Participation in the Forum is critical for the candidates to state their intentions as potential Board members and to provide a fully transparent and honest representation of any activities that may have impacted, and will impact, Hidden Hills. This time is essential in examining how the candidates believe Hidden Hills should be governed and developed in the future, and if their vision aligns with the pastoral master plan concept of Founding Father A.E. Hansen as stated in our CC&Rs.

The Association has various committees who serve the community, such as the Architectural Committee, Parks & Recreation Committee, Theater Committee, Gate Operations Committee, and the Equestrian Services Committee. All committees are staffed by your neighbors, who are solely volunteers, so one can clearly examine how the candidates have served in this community. The qualification that candidates must be members of the Homeowners Association does not restrict from

Board qualification candidates who are developers or who do not live in Hidden Hills because membership is determined by property ownership, not residence in the community. It is crucial to investigate if a candidate wants to maintain the Founding Fathers’ idyllic rural, open space vision of the community, or if the candidate is construction-friendly to the detriment of our residents and equestrian traditions. As members of this community, it is incumbent upon each of us to be careful in the selection of those who serve on the HHCA Board.

BE DILIGENT. ASK QUESTIONS. PLEASE VOTE!

It is imperative to make your vote count! HHCA Board members have the oversight and power to protect, change, and in some cases detrimentally impact how daily life is experienced in Hidden Hills. Secret Ballots will be mailed first class to property owners by November 12. Homeowner votes by Secret Ballots must be received by the Inspector of Elections at Correct Elect, LLC, no later than noon on December 13, 2021. The election results will be tabulated and announced at the HHCA Annual meeting on December 14, 2021. Watch your email for reminders of that date and time to attend by Zoom conference.

CANDIDATES FORUM; HOW TO PARTICIPATE

The meeting participation is virtual via Zoom. Wednesday, November 10, 2021 at 6:00 pm.

A HIDDEN HILLS HOMECOMING

A Gallery of Photographs to Celebrate the 60th Year of a Favorite

The Fiesta returned this year to honor the City’s 60th anniversary. This annual event is enjoyed by residents who wish to celebrate the City’s incorporation in 1961. The weekend kicked off with the popular parade of neighborhood created floats, marching bands, horses, & classic cars, led through town by Grand Marshall Shannon Moore, who recently retired after dedicating 28 years as the HHCA General Manager.

The traditional afternoon community center events included an In & Out food truck, pet show, adult & children’s art show, among many other family activities. The Carnival was highly attended serving 1,500 Rib Ranch BBQ dinners, offering new rides, and fun for all.

On Sunday, early risers showed up at the delectable

BellaDonna catered Pancake Breakfast, and spent their day shopping among the

various vendors at the first Community Marketplace. The weekend concluded with the crowd-pleasing classic and exotic car show, where neighbors gathered to share their favorite bottles of red or white wine as they enjoyed a gourmet Italian dinner by Chef Marcus Roberto.

Every Dog HAS ITS DAY

FROM HILLTOP ROAD TO TARRYTOWN, NEW YORK. MEET DOOGIE, THE 2021 WESTMINSTER KENNEL CLUB AGILITY TRIAL CHAMPION

30 The Hidden Hills Register & Resource Guide | November 2021

Stroll down the bridle trail between Hilltop & Little Valley Roads, and you will find Dr. Tracy Golden’s dog agility course among the backyard vineyards, gardens, horse arenas, and pastures. Energetic Border Collies happily run loose among the props until with one word, they line up like devoted soldiers in unison waiting attentively for their next command from Tracy. Dog agility is a sport where a handler directs a dog through an obstacle course in a race for both time and accuracy. Most animals enjoy agility in some capacity, but there are some loyal dogs that are in a class of their own.

Doogie, also known as the “Red Flash”, comes from Contact Point Border Collies in Fillmore, however he is from a long line of Border Collies originating in the Border country between Scotland and England. Raised in a hilly and largely rural region much like Hidden Hills, his ancestors developed a unique working style using an intense gaze known as “eye”, coupled with a stalking style of movement. Border Collies are well known for their stare, an intense focus that is one of Doogie’s greatest assets, along with his intuitive ability to work without commands, & out of sight of Tracy. He is greatly motivated by his toys & loves the exercises through the course equipment–in fact he is known for his superior coordinated

eye and physical movements through the weave poles. All of these qualities combine to create a perfect standard specimen in Doogie leading him to win the 24-inch class division of the Westminster Kennel Club Agility Trial Championship in 2021.

The Westminster Kennel Club was established in 1877, and at 145 years old is America’s oldest organization dedicated to the sport of dogs. In June 2021, the annual purebred dog show began the Masters Agility Championship with thousands of dogs competing in conformation events. Even though Tracy remembers that competing at the Westminster Agility Trial was “fun and nerve-wracking,” the Westminster Kennel Club’s mission parallels that of Tracy: to enhance the lives of dogs, celebrate their companionship, promote responsible dog ownership and breed preservation.

Tracy is more than a simple animal lover and trainer. During the week, she works full-time as a periodontist in private practice in Westwood, in addition to being a lecturer in the Division of Advanced Prosthodontics, Section of Special Care at UCLA School of Dentistry. Her philanthropic work includes Happy Trails for Kids, a non-profit organization that provides a summer camp and yearround reunion events for hundreds of children in the California foster care system; and Dental Lifeline, a

non-profit organization that refers lowincome and medically compromised adults to Dr. Golden and her colleagues. Tracy and her husband Brent have lived in Hidden Hills for close to twenty years with their dogs and horses. In addition to maintaining a thriving dental practice, she began training dogs twenty five years ago after she rescued a terminally untrainable black lab mix who was going to be put down. She committed to training him and he ended up living a long healthy life in her care.

Tracy connects to all dogs, but not all dogs have the drive to respond or the focus of 10 year old Doogie. “The breeder chose him for me and there was actually a dog I preferred that went to Japan. I wouldn’t pick him up until he was about four months old and she had already named him Doogie, because all my other dogs have names that begin with the letter B. So when he was a puppy, he just stared at stuff. And this is hard to believe but he had very short legs and he was overweight. We want them to be coyote-like. He’s over 22 inches but he only weighs 42 pounds. He’s probably one of the oldest dogs to have won the Westminster’s Agility. Usually they are in their prime from ages 5-7. He’s going to be 10 and a half, so he’s ending his career. He still has one more championship to get.”

Champion Border Collie’s like Doogie have a unique intensity, energy and trainability, in addition to an extraordinary instinct, and an uncanny ability to reason. Tracy’s method of discipline is more like playing as if she is training, and training as if she is playing because believes that training should be fun, dogs should have goals, & always be happy. It’s no wonder that Doogie would be a champion with that work ethic as a guide.

here you are today is the result of your passion for the business you’ve built—and a lifetime of work.

But what is your vision for life after you walk away from your business? What you do next is critical for you and your family. It’s a time when you need to shift your focus to personal fulfillment, wealth planning and more.

You. Your family. Your employees. Your business goes to the heart of who you are and what you do. Even for family members, your decision to sell your business may represent a significant change in wealth and status. Some owners have a clear separation between family and their business. However, communicating with those who

PREPARE FOR YOUR EXIT

In the February 2018 issue of UBS Investor Watch, we found that 48% of business owners don’t have a formal exit strategy in place. Here are three key tips for getting started.

1 2

Plan ahead

Long-term planning is key to any successful sale, because it helps you focus on what’s important. Starting planning conversations early with your financial advisor, tax professional and estate planning attorney will help you be confident about your future. Be certain that advanced income, legacy and tax planning are a part of these conversations.

Define what you want

Spend time thinking about what you want after the sale. Reflect on your passions and plan for what you want to accomplish.

UBS Investor Watch research found that 48% of business owners look forward to traveling more, while 26% plan to give back to their community or causes.

could benefit the most may be important to a successful plan.

SELLING YOUR BUSINESS PREPARING FOR WHAT COMES NEXT W

Many owners assure employees that a sale will have no practical impact on them. However, once the sale has gone through and you are no longer involved in the decisions, it can be hard to know. This may mean a period of tension and uncertainty—which can have an emotional impact on you.

Here’s what we heard from business owners:

“It’s sad and hard when you sell because you’ve not only invested time and money, but also a bit of your soul.”

“A part of me was delighted but another part of me was sad. The office was like a second home.”

Break the silence

UBS Investor Watch research shows that only about 25% of former business owners engaged their children and heirs in a conversation about family wealth. Communicate early about what you expect or hope for. This creates a clearer picture and gives everyone involved a chance to contribute.

The power of emotions

Selling your business is about letting go. This can be a profound change with powerful emotional impacts. For some owners, it’s confusing. For others, there’s a sense of elation. Many talk about feelings of depression and a lack of purpose.

Here’s what we heard from business owners:

“I felt very muted. I didn’t know how to process it. I had to figure out how to deal with a new reality.”

“I had been working hard for a long time. At the beginning, I did nothing, and it was great. People say you get bored, but I didn’t—it was wonderful.”

PLANNING FOR LIFE after THE SALE:

THE SIX STAGES

As business owners contemplate a transition, they wonder what life will look like after the sale. We’ve identified six stages that most owners go through. Think through these questions well before your transition.

Recharge.

Is a vacation or dream purchase needed? Do you need some space to think? Is an escape and recharge needed?

Self.

How much money do you have and need? Is your wealth lifechanging or life-enhancing?

Enabling.

What professional advice do you need? Do you have the right advisory team?

Family.

How should you support your family? Should you set money aside for home purchases and education?

Legacy.

What do you want to leave for future generations and your employees? How should it be left?

Opportunity.

How do you find personal fulfillment in the future? How can you best contribute to others?

Whether your transition is a few months or a few years away, it’s important to start planning for how you want to live your life after selling your business. HH

PREPARING YOUR PETS FOR AN EVACUATION

Fall is upon us in Southern California, and while we may have a reprieve from the hundred degree temperatures of summer, the season also brings with it the threat of wildfire. When preparing for an emergency evacuation, we must not forget our four legged friends. Read on to make sure your pets are prepared!

IDENTIFICATION

The single most important step in preparing for an emergency is proper identification of your pets. In emergency situations, pets are at higher risk of being separated from their owners. Sometimes owners are not home when disaster strikes, or your animals may be evacuated to a county shelter or evacuation center. Proper identification is crucial, and multiple types of identification are recommended. The easiest identification for most pets is to keep their collars or halters updated with the pet’s name and owner’s contact information. With horses and other livestock, placing duct tape on their hooves or in their mane with owner’s contact information written

in sharpie works well too. There are also many reflective emergency identification collars and leg bands available online for all species including dogs, horses, and small livestock. Check out the EquestriSafe Website for ideas. Remember that if your animals are evacuated to a shelter or evacuation center, you must prove ownership to retrieve them. The best way to do this is with a microchip. A microchip can be read by a scanner that all shelters or veterinarians have, and identifies the animal and their owner. Ownership can also be proven by vet records or photos, so keep a copy of these in your emergency kit just in case.

GO-BAG

Many of us have emergency kits prepared for ourselves and for our human family members, but does yours contain important supplies for your furry family members as well? As we saw after the Woolsey fire, it is very possible to be evacuated from our homes, and have limited access to necessities, for many days. It is important to have an adequate supply of food and water for your animals

for one to two weeks. For dogs and cats, this means having extra canned or dry food that they are used to eating. For horses and livestock, this means having extra hay or pellets on hand. Water can become a big issue, especially if utilities are cut off. Horses drink up to 10 gallons per day, and dogs, depending on their size, can drink up to one to two liters per day. If you have large animals, consider investing in water barrels that store 50 gallons each. For small animals, having a few 3 or 5 gallon water jugs from the grocery store may be sufficient. Having a “GoBag” that contains necessities packed and ready to go is also a good idea. Consider making a “Pet Emergency Notification Card” for each animal that has their info on it including pet’s name, identifying markings, microchip, medical info, veterinarian info, and emergency contacts. Keep a copy of these in your “Go-Bag” as well as keeping copies in your home or barn.

WHEN TO EVACUATE

The question on everyone’s mind is always when to evacuate. In general,

Dr. Allie grew up in Hidden Hills as an avid equestrian. She went on to receive her veterinary degree from University of California, Davis in 2017. She now practices as a mobile house call veterinarian seeing her patients, large and small, in the comfort of their own homes. drtashnek.com

if you have animals, it is a good idea to start the evacuation process once an evacuation warning is issued, or sooner if you are aware of a nearby wildfire. Animals can be unpredictable, and can take time to catch, contain, and evacuate safely. Remember that if you choose to wait, consider that smoke inhalation can be just as dangerous and deadly as the fire itself. Smoky air contains particulates that can cause a number of health problems when

inhaled, ranging from mild irritation to severe illness. Small particulate matter is able to reach the deep airways of the lungs causing reduced lung function, persistent cough, wheezing, and increased risk for pneumonia. Carbon monoxide, which is produced by fire, particularly smoldering fire, can be fatal. Remember, that even after the fire passes, it takes many days to weeks for the air quality to recover, so limit exercise while there is still smoke

lingering in the air. Lung damage from smoke inhalation, even mild, can take 4-6 weeks to heal, so make sure to give your pets, and yourself, plenty of time to recover before attempting exercise again. HH

GRANADA HOTEL

& BISTRO

The Granada Hotel & Bistro is perfect for a romantic getaway any time of year. However, the 17-room property is the physical embodiment of a Central Coast autumn, with its exposed brick walls, hand-crafted steel windows, wrought iron balconies, Persian rugs, supple leather headboards, and original hardwood floors. The scene is set for romance and relaxation. It all makes sense, as former Hollywood screenwriter Kimberly Walker channeled her experience to become the visionary founder and managing partner of this and other hotels in the Nomada Hotel Group.

Like other Nomada properties, the Granada was brought back to life through a complete renovation and restoration of a once-utilitarian Central Coast building. At one point, Walker used some of the office space in this 1920s structure for her original Granada Bistro wine bar. Although her first foray into the hospitality world was successful, her landlord lost ownership of the building. The setback, however, was a catalyst for a bigger vision as she and several other entrepreneurs came together at Burning Man to form the “Lunacy Club” to take things to the next level.

As she would with her future hotels, Walker found inspiration in her world travels, including

philanthropic work focused on women’s issues in Arusha, Tanzania.

Walker (also an inventor, creating ‘Wine Wipes,’ to remove wine stains on teeth, and later, The Vanity Project, a collection of single-use amenities for modern travelers) managed the renovation, incorporating distinctive objects and furnishings she collected through the years. While the original structure would speak volumes if the walls could talk, so do the various spaces throughout the property.
