Spring Entryway Inspiration

Michelle Gracie is one of LA’s top producing agents of The Beverly Hills Estates, and CEO of The Turnkey Concierge, a home production services company serving LA’s luxury market and celebrity clientele. She wants you to spring into the listing season with her Top 5 Tips on how to make your entryway enchanting.

Everyone talks about the importance of curb appeal, however, Michelle wants to take a deeper dive into the Turnkey Entryway. “I cant stress enough that the walk up to your front door for a potential buyer will leave an everlasting first impression that will be compounded when the buyer stands outside reflecting back on the property, potentially discussing writing an offer with their realtor,” says Michelle. “So your home’s first impression will double down as a lasting one.”

Whether you’re getting ready to put your home on the market for sale or not make sure you give your entry the refresh it deserves for spring tidings. Welcome friends and family to gatherings after you use Michelle‘s 5 step refresh.

1st Restore the Door - The Face of your Door is the portal to your entryway. Start by applyng a fresh stain or coat of paint adding vibrance as you cross the threshold.

2nd Revitalize Lighting - Replace outdoor bulbs that need assistance. Lacking in lighting? Easy fix pop in LED Solar Pathway Lights which will light up the walkway leading up to your door.

3rd Redesign Garden Pots - Michelle’s favorite garden pot combo is either two large pots on each side of the door or stacking 3 pots varying in sizes large, medium or small on each side of the doorway. Both choices will add beautiful symmetry and frame your welcoming portal. When choosing what to put in your garden pots, according to Michelle, “Color evokes Emotion”. She suggests one of two winning color combos. Lush shades of green and white for a prosperous organic vibe or what she refers to as “The SoCal Feels”. A combination of purples, pinks & white for a romantic and whimsical essence. After you know your color combo start planting with “Tall Thrillers” to give your pot height and drama. Next add “Filler”, a medium sized plant, for fullness. Lastly, and Michelle’s favorite, place a “Spiller” to texturize & cascade over your perfect pots. Michelle states “Layering plants thoughtfully will elevate the look of your garden pots”.

4th Recreate Betterment BasketsEven with a proper mudroom, someone is bound to pop by and leave everyday items near your main entrance. Place 2 beautiful oversized baskets just inside your foyer. This way you and your guests will have a designated place for things such as shoes, soccer balls, dog leashes, book bags, etc.

5th Renew Entrance Mat - Last but not least, don’t forget to throw away & replace that old doormat. It’s been walked all over and seen better days. This little detail will make a cosmic-sized difference at first glance.

BOB COFFEY RETIRES

Retirement is one of those major life milestones that mark the ending of one chapter and the start of another. Bob Coffey retired after 18 years of

visiting home sites as the Compliance & Infrastructure Coordinator responsible for enforcing the strict architectural rules and regulations of the governing documents of the Hidden Hills Community Associations (HHCA.) Many neighbors gathered at his send off at the Community Center to enjoy a light meal and desserts from Lovi’s. Kerry Kallman, the General Manager of the City of Hidden Hills, and David Stanley, the newly elected President of the HHCA, addressed Bob with words and gifts of appreciation from the community to congratulate him on a successful career. We wish him well on the exciting adventures ahead!

ANNIE OAKLEY

Ever wonder where the street names in Hidden Hills came from? Bob Coffey did. For 18 years, Bob spent untold hours driving the private roads of our city visiting home sites as the Compliance & Infrastructure Coordinator responsible for enforcing the strict architectural rules and regulations of the governing documents of the Hidden Hills Community Associations

(HHCA.) After close to two decades of discussing plans with residents, he gratefully retired to pursue activities that include making knives & spending well-earned time with his accomplished wife and their adored grandchildren. One fortunate gift he leaves behind is a comprehensive legacy of the historical origins of fourteen Hidden Hills roads compiled after extensive research with the assistance of the Gene Autry History

HIDDEN HILLS NAMESAKES

WHAT’S THE WORD ON THE STREETS

Museum of the American West in 2006.

Hidden Hills folklore has it that A.E. Hanson saw two oak trees on a long dirt road alongside rolling hills before deciding to purchase the thousand acres that would eventually become the exclusive development of Hidden Hills. Starting with two model homes built in the 1950’s on Long Valley, currently there are approximately 660

homes upon 44 roads (some private) in Hidden Hills.

Long Valley and Round Meadow Roads were named because that’s what they looked like — a long valley which turned into a round meadow. Lasher Road was named because the home of Mrs Lasher, one of the original landowners, was on that road. One local field was covered with six-foot-high mustard plants and was a gathering place for red-winged blackbirds, and thus appeared Wingfield Road.

According to A.E. Hanson, his children read books about early Western American explorers and trappers, so the roads in the Round Meadow area were named for these trailblazers, in hopes that future generations of children in Hidden Hills would become fascinated in the history of the American West from 1805 to 1830. Interest remains even though future developers stopped naming the streets after historical figures.

According to Bob’s research, Annie Oakley was born Annie Moses on August 13, 1860. Annie’s mother was widowed several times and the family finances had always been marginal, so Annie used her father’s old Kentucky rifle to hunt small game for the Katzenberger brother’s grocery store in Greenville, Ohio where it was resold to hotels and restaurants in Cincinnati. Annie was so successful at hunting that by the time she was 15 years old, she was able to pay the $200 mortgage on her mother’s house with the money she had earned.

Annie Oakley’s noted shooting ability brought an invitation from

22 The Hidden Hills Register & Resource Guide | May 2022

Jack Frost, a hotel owner in Cincinnati who had purchased her game, to participate in a shooting contest against a well-known marksman, Frank E. Butler. Butler was on tour with several other marksmen. While on the road, Butler typically offered challenges to local shooters. Annie won the match with twenty-five shots out of twenty-five attempts with Butler missing one of his shots. This amazing girl entranced Butler, and the two shooters began a courtship that resulted in marriage on August 23, 1876.

The Butlers—Annie and Frank— joined the Four-Paw and Sells Brothers Circus in 1880 as a shooting act. They met the great Sioux Indian chief Sitting Bull in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1882, at which time Annie was adopted into the tribe as “Mochin Chilla Wytonys Cecilia,” which is the Sioux Indian name for “My Daughter, Little Sure Shot.” Two years later the Butlers joined the Wild West Show and traveled with Buffalo Bill Cody’s group for 17 years. Annie performed her magic with guns before seven

crowned heads of Europe in one day, and among her treasured trophies was a cup of solid silver awarded by Edward VII, who was Prince of Wales at the time. It was inscribed “You are the best shot I have ever seen.”

After a near-disastrous train wreck while with the Wild West Show, Annie retired to private life in 1901. It was more than a year before she was able to leave the hospital and to resume some of her shooting activities. Unfortunately in 1921, a car accident left Annie in a brace for the rest of her life, but she still came back to break 100 clay targets the following year at Pinehurst. During her 30 years of shooting, Annie Oakley fired well over a million shells. She won over $100,000 and numerous trophies during her shooting career. A year before her death—at the 1925 Grand American—Annie obliged some of her friends and shot a race, breaking 97 out of 100 targets. She died in Greenville, Ohio on November 3, 1926. HH

THE VALLEY SALT CAVE JUST BREATHE...

Holistic remedies and practices have been around for centuries and have become more popular in recent times. A personal search for a more natural way to manage inflammation and pain led to the use of salt caves for Kari and Warren Shulman. Warren arrived in Los Angeles the day before the

Northridge Earthquake. After Kari arrived a few months later, she began suffering from asthma and other inflammatory issues which culminated in an auto-immune diagnosis. Having used conventional treatment methods, she began exploring a more holistic approach based upon the belief she could find an alternative to the ineffective traditional approaches.

After finding successful treatment with the use of salt caves, Kari and Warren decided it was time to share this healing modality with Los Angeles, saving clients the trip to the Himalayan Mountains by creating nature’s purest and most

complete mineral salt source in the San Fernando Valley. At Valley Salt Cave, the client is cocooned in a clean and fluffy Eddie Bauer blanket, sitting back in a zero-gravity chair floating away as they breathe an infusion of 84 naturally occurring elements & minerals for every 45 minute Halotherapy or Dry Salt Therapy session. Salt tiles are backlit with dim lights that set a serene mood. Wear whatever is comfortable to relax in the cool 65 to 68 degrees cave as the salt will not damage hair, clothes or makeup.

Dry Salt Therapy also aids in strengthening the immune system, decreasing mental fatigue, and reducing stress. People of all ages who visit the Valley Salt Cave may find relief from various conditions such as: Asthma, Allergies, Bronchitis, Chronic Fatigue, Common Cold, Cystic Fibrosis, COPD, Dermatitis, Eczema, Emphysema, Fibromyalgia, Headaches, High Blood Pressure, Influenza, Pneumonia, Psoriasis, Pulmonary Fibrosis, Rhinitis/ Sinusitis, Rosacea and Snoring.

30 The Hidden Hills Register & Resource Guide | May 2022
WEEKEND GETAWAYLOCAL DISCOVERY

The journey begins with an explanation of the benefits of dry salt therapy as one sets an intention. Sit back and breathe deeply while relaxing to the sounds of gentle trickling of a salt water cascade as a short meditation plays in the background. The cascade produces a saline vapor effect within the cave, similar to the air near ocean environments. This assists the absorption of saline by the body to strengthen our immune system and help balance PH levels. Drift away to the light music while the salt nourishes your whole being.

Dry Salt Therapy balances hydration by regulating water content on a cellular level, stabilizes alkalinity/ acidity in the body, detoxifies the body of heavy metals, improves metabolic function and improves digestion. Dry Salt Therapy is natural and safe for all ages, including babies and teenagers, and there are no side effects or contraindications. Athletes report enhanced performance and recovery time by adding Dry Salt Therapy to their training programs.

Teenagers and children love the gentleness of this treatment. These minerals exist in ionic form, which means that they are easily absorbed by the body with the simple act of inhaling. BACKYARD CHICKENS

Get the scoop on what’s in the coop.

Backyard chickens are becoming increasingly popular, especially since the pandemic. Chickens are a fun pet, relatively easy to care for, and provide free breakfast! Read on to learn more, whether you are first considering chicks, or are a seasoned chicken keeper.

CHOOSING YOUR CHICKS

The first question when delving into the world of backyard chickens, is choosing a breed. There are dozens of chicken breeds. Some are widely available at the local feed store, and some must be specially ordered from hatcheries. Chicken breeds are usually characterized by whether they are bred for egg production or meat production. Most backyard chicken keepers are raising chickens for eggs, but some people do want their chickens to be used for meat one day. The breeds that are raised for egg production will list the average number of eggs their breed will lay in a year. Certain breeds are better adapted to certain climates. Most chickens are relatively cold hardy, but struggle a little bit more in our warm temperatures, so it is important to choose a breed that tolerates heat well. Many chicken owners are

looking for hens rather than roosters, but it is not always easy to determine the sex of a chick until they are older. Some breeds are able to be “sexed”, or determined to be male or female, at an early age based on their coloring. If this is a concern, then you may want to opt for a breed that is able to be sexed, or you may end up with a rooster or two in your flock. Lastly, different breeds have varying color plumage and lay white, brown, blue, or green colored eggs.

RAISING YOUR CHICKS

So now you’ve purchased your first chicks! The next step is to make sure their brooder is set up properly. Chicks spend the first 4 to 6 weeks of their life indoors in a brooder. A brooder can range from a fancy set up to pretty basic, as long as a few criteria are met. A brooder is just an enclosure that the chicks cannot jump out of that has a heat source, such as a heat lamp or ceramic heater. It is important to make sure that the chicks have enough space to move away from the heat source as well, so they don’t overheat. Consider that any heat source, but especially heat lamps, can be a fire hazard. Ceramic heaters are generally safer. Next, they need a feed source and water source.

It is important to show each chick where their food and water is when they are first introduced into the brooder. Baby chicks are delicate, so it is important to keep their bedding clean and keep an eye on their stool. Baby chicks can get “pasty butt” where their feces cakes on; make sure to keep an eye out for this and clean them up with a warm washcloth if necessary.

HOUSING: WHERE SHOULD MY CHICKENS LIVE?

Once your chickens are fully feathered (usually about 6 weeks old), your chickens are ready to move outside to their coop! Their coop is the structure where they will come in to roost at night. Once chickens know where their coop is, they will innately come inside around dusk to roost. There are many premade coops for purchase both at pet stores and online, or one may choose to DIY their own. First, you want there to be enough room for the chickens to roost comfortably. Most commercial coops will list the recommended number of chickens for the enclosure. Chickens like to sleep off the ground, so make sure the roosting bars are elevated off the floor. The second thing to consider is

predation. Chickens are at their most vulnerable when they are sleeping, so make sure the coop has a door that can close at night to lock the chickens in and predators out. Additionally, make sure the structure is sturdy enough so that predators can not break in, or dig underneath! Racoons have been known to reach in through chain link fencing to grab a chicken. Also important is to consider the temperature and air flow. In the summer, it is important to have adequate air flow so that the coop doesn’t get too hot at night. In the winter time, air flow is still important, but you want to be able to make sure the chickens have shelter from rain and wind. Remember that you will have to clean the chicken coop regularly, so make sure there is easy access for cleaning and egg collecting as well.

Now that you’ve figured out where your chickens will sleep, next will be to decide where they will roam during the day. Many chicken keepers choose to allow their birds to free range. This allows for the birds to forage naturally and eat weeds and bugs, making for the rich deep orange yolks of free range eggs. However, predators are a real threat in our area, and usually the question is not

“if”, but “when” a predator (such as a coyote or hawk) will grab a chicken for themselves. Most chicken tenders opt for a chicken run. A run is an enclosed area connected to the coop where the chickens can safely forage during the day, but then come into their coop at night. Make sure that the fencing of the run has the same safety considerations as the coop - sturdy enough that predators can not break in or dig under (consider both a top and bottom to the structure such as chicken wire or chain link).

FEEDING: WHAT DO MY CHICKENS EAT?

Commercial feed is available for chickens of all ages and life stages. When your chicks are babies, they will be eating chick starter. Once they start laying eggs, they will be eating layer feed. Generally, chicken feed comes in three consistencies - mash, pellets, and crumble. Chickens and their owners all seem to have different preferences. The most important consideration is that the

feed is appropriate for the life stage of the chicken. If chickens are not allowed to free range, they also need access to “grit.” Grit is crushed rocks or sand, and is necessary for birds to grind up their food once it reaches their digestive tract. Chickens also LOVE snacks especially table scraps, veggies, and “scratch.” Scratch is commercially bought and often consists of corn. It is NOT a replacement for regular food. Any snacks including scratch should only be fed as a treat, and not as the main part of your chicken’s diet (although the chickens might object!).

EGGS

Your female chickens (hens) will start laying eggs at around 6 months of age. The first egg of the flock is always so exciting! These young hens may often lay through their first winter season, but generally once hens are older, their laying drops off during winter (when daylight hours are shorter) and increases come spring and summer. Remember, that chickens can carry germs such as Salmonella so remember to wash your hands after touching chickens or eggs (or anything that has come in contact with their feces). Consider establishing a regular veterinarian that treats chickens before your birds become sick. Most of all, enjoy your feathery friends and the delicious gifts they lay! HH

DON’T PASS THIS OVER!

Passover is a weeklong holiday celebrated by Jewish people every year to commemorate their Exodus from Egyptian slavery. The Hebrew name, Pesach, means “to passover” because the plague in Egypt that killed all first-borns passed over the Israelites’ homes, sparing the lives of their children. On the first two nights of Passover, a ritual-rich 15-step seder centering around telling the story

of their emancipation is held. After candles have been lit, some highlights include drinking four cups of wine, dipping vegetables & bitter herbs into saltwater, storytelling by children who ask the Four Questions, eating matzah as a reminder that when our ancestors left Egypt they had no time to allow their bread to rise, and singing late into the night. Passover is important as it celebrates a birth of a nation.

RESIDENTS SHARE THEIR FAVORITES

When Equestrian Services Committee Member Linda Yallen is asked what her favorite quality about horses, she points out she has been excited to be in their presence from the time she was in diapers. As long as she can remember, she has been enamored by the intelligence, beauty, and connection she has had to these animals. Throughout her life she took every opportunity to be around horses from the riding lessons she received as a high school graduation gift to moving to this equestrian community fifteen years ago from Mountain View Estates in Calabasas. Horses have always been the biggest attraction in Linda’s life, and remain so today.

Linda & Bob Yallen were attracted to Hidden Hills because of the feeling of living in the country yet still being adjacent to a city. In the ultimate of divine coincidences, Linda’s friends were moving out of the neighborhood at the same time she was moving in, so they gifted her their beloved Quarter Horse named King. They told her how special King was, and it was love at first sight when they met. The Yallen’s currently reside with two Quarter Horses (King & Ty) and two Siberian huskies (Pax & Skye), in addition to an impressive Koi pond, well stocked thanks to their son Jordan’s tropical fish business.

Linda has found many trails that she and King love to walk or ride for different reasons. Many of them have unique characteristics that make each

loop or trail enjoyable depending on the mood or the kind of workout one may be looking for herself, the dogs, or horses. The “Burbank Gate Overlook Trail” has an opening on Spring Valley Road across from the empty lot by the Burbank Gate. The trail moves parallel behind Clear Valley Road towards the Burbank gate. The path begins with an easy incline with a few rolling hills and gentle curves as it slopes inward towards the center of the city to exit on Clear Valley Road. One travels through tunnel-like greenery creating the illusion of a remote locale, although it is not, as one can clearly overlook the often long line of vehicle traffic waiting for entrance at the Burbank gate that sits below this route. Although it is a short jaunt, it is very peaceful and includes some small challenging climbs and slopes. This mellow trail

is perfect for cantering on horseback or walking the dogs, and can begin on Clear Valley or Spring Valley Roads. The lush surrounding trees & bushes frame the panoramic north San Fernando Valley and Woodland Hills views and help transport oneself to another location more like upstate New York. HH

HOTEL DEL CORANADO

REMAKING HISTORY AT A BELOVED CALIFORNIA LANDMARK

The Hotel Del Coronado is many things above and beyond its “historic” status. In its early days, over a century ago, it stood as a beacon drawing well-to-do and tastemaking vacationers to California’s sunny shores. As the backdrop for the legendary Billy Wilder comedy “Some Like It Hot” (famous for its depiction of the Roaring 20s and Marilyn Monroe’s star power) it’s both a part of Hollywood history and San Diego-area history. While the architectural integrity of the original Victorian architecture has been

preserved, each decade has brought new expressions of ambiance and amenities to cater to ever-evolving tastes.

In late 2021, the results of the “Hotel Del’s” $400 million “Master Plan” renovations ensure the property will continue to make history and delight future generations. The landmark has most recently seen an extensive restoration of the hotel’s welcoming front porch (with an assist from the area’s Heritage Architecture & Planning) to its original grandeur

along with an updated main entry and drive experience. Other things guests can look forward to are fresh and contemporary guest rooms in the justlaunched The Views ‘neighborhood,’ the recent introduction of The Cabanas ‘neighborhood’ and new main pool. While the tradition of the Hotel Del’s lavish brunch is still in place, four upgraded dining concepts – Sun Deck, Babcock & Story, ENO Market, and ENO Pizzeria–are poised to generate culinary excitement later this year.

“The Master Plan demonstrates not only our commitment to investing in our guest experience but also our dedication to reinvigorating Hotel del Coronado’s timeless story,” said general manager Harold Rapoza, in light of the renovation phases being completed and brought to life. Design firm Wimberly Interiors, meanwhile, has put its stamp on the thoughtful refresh of the Victorian Building lobby, maintaining the original Victorian color palette while updating the overall look subtly with custom “Amazonia” wall covering by de Gournay. The hotel’s show-stopping birdcage elevator also received mechanical upgrades to operate automatically, though it also has an “attendant mode” so guests can continue to enjoy it as people did a century ago.

Guests who want to enjoy the property in a more modern context, meanwhile, will appreciate The Views’ 217 enhanced guest rooms and suites crisp, upscale coastal design in seafoam and driftwood offset with new glass balcony railings to allow for uninterrupted views. Other distinct neighborhood experiences of the hotel (top-end luxury Beach Village, The Victorian, Shore House at The Del), are also spruced up with brighter, more contemporary hues while remaining true to their original concepts. In addition to the picturesque beach cabanas, poolside areas and resort activities tailored for families and couples, the Hotel Del Coronado boasts the one-of-a-kind Ice House Museum, built in 1889. Today, it is a museum preserving its history and keeping it alive for current and future generations of visitors Along with a permanent and rotating exhibit space, it’s the starting place for the hotel’s famed history tours, as well as a unique venue for special occasions and gatherings.

One of the Hotel Del Coronado’s most popular weekends is Mother’s Day. True to tradition, the property’s Crown Room or Ocean Ballroom will once again stage an elegant champagne brunch. However, all year round, families can celebrate their mothers with a variety of packages that encompass the hotel’s many restaurants as well as its awardwinning Spa & Salon at The Del, which not only offers outstanding coastal views and treatments incorporating healing
