Whose house? RAMS HOUSE!

THE COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER TO CHEER ON RESIDENT RAMS FAMILIES IN A PRE SUPER BOWL LVI CELEBRATION.

The community happily got together to cheer on the National Football Conference champion Los Angeles Rams who were playing against the American Football Conference champion Cincinnati Bengals. You might have heard Kelly Stafford lead the overjoyed gathering in celebratory chants of “Whose House?

Rams House! Ruta!” as neighbors sipped Mimosas, Orange Juice, and nibbled on custom Ram’s Donuts to celebrate our home team going to Super Bowl LVI.

The game was played on February 13, 2022, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, the new home stadium of the Rams, marking the second consecutive

and second overall Super Bowl to feature a team playing and winning in its home stadium. The Rams’ victory was their first as a Los Angeles-based team and was expertly played by veteran quarterback and resident Matthew Stafford. We welcome the Stafford Family to the neighborhood!

The 2022 Winter Social

Once a year a blizzard descends upon Hidden Hills. We have a few choices when it snows, and the Parks and Recreation Committee advised the neighborhood to pull out their scarves, gloves, boots, & sleds and head down to the Saddle Creek Arena where the ground was covered in piles of fluffy white powder after a winter storm took place. Snow days are a fantastic time to spend with kids especially when it conveniently falls in one’s backyard. Families were amazed upon first glance of the real snow at the newly reinvigorated Winter Social that featured an thrilling evening of fun for kids and adults of all ages.

Making Snow Angels and Snowmen was a highlight for the younger residents, along with Sledding, a Snowman Bounce House, an Arctic Plunge Slide, Lazer Tag, and a Snowboard Simulator. While the children were happily engaged in chilly activities, adults warmed their bodies with Hot Muddled Wine at the Wine Garden & with the various Food Truck option. Snowballs flew through the air as Hip Hop Violinist Josh Vietti moved throughout the crowd and entertained the residents with a lively performance infused with Pop, R&B, Classical and HipHop. Everyone enjoyed the winter themed fun-filled night that taught many lessons on how to enjoy a snow day such as bundle up and have fun with the ones who warm our hearts the most.

A SURVIVOR’S LIFE ON CANVAS

THE IMPORTANCE AND INFLUENCE OF JEWISH HISTORY LIVES ON THROUGH THE DAVID LABKOBSKI PROJECT

30 The Hidden Hills Register & Resource Guide | March 2022

Stories about her Uncle David surviving the Holocaust, and the artwork that it inspired, were prominent throughout Leora Raikin’s childhood. Prior to World War II, the young artist, David Labkovski, grew up in Vilna, the Jerusalem of Lithuania. He was drafted into the Red Army and shortly thereafter, arrested and deported to the Gulag in Siberia for three years. He survived the brutal conditions of his sentence and returned to the destroyed city of Vilna, finding the loss of almost the entire Jewish community after World War II. Labkovski remained there under Soviet oppression until immigrating to Israel in 1958, where he dreamed that one day his artwork would find an audience to bear witness to the past and share his renewed hope in the future.

With the understanding that people often assert Holocaust education is important, but do little about it, Leora felt her uncle’s pieces had a greater purpose and could be used to educate others in a creative and approachable way. This inspired her to initiate the David Labkovski Project, the nonprofit organization that explores the artist’s personal experiences of survival, tolerance and acceptance through the creation of educational programs and museum exhibits which study over 400 of his paintings and sketches from 1929-1987.

The importance of Jewish issues was also embedded in Hidden Hills resident Jennifer Lopata from the time she was very young by parents who firmly believed in the resilience of the Jewish people and in the importance of the State of Israel. Even though

there are differences in what it means to be Jewish, Jennifer was taught it is a matter of history, culture and values by parents “constantly backing, acknowledging, and in full support of Jewish causes and the longevity of our people, our ancestry, our heritage.”

Jennifer became involved six years ago at the onset of the David Labkovski Project because she shares the belief that learning about the atrocities of the Holocaust through the eyes of David Labkovski is an important factor to insure that we never forget. Not only does Jennifer have a successful education company in addition to her various charity work, she serves as a board member for this nonprofit and is involved with their Student Docent training program. Jennifer was honored to receive the 2022 David Labkovski Legacy of Hope award at the February Livestream Scholars’ Event featuring scholar Liza Wiemer, author of the award-winning novel The Assignment. The gathering and silent auction is an annual event that ensures the nonprofit can continue its important work of creating a legacy through Labkovski’s art.

Found in secular and religious schools, college and multicultural centers, the program expanded into more locations with the International Student Docent training program. This no-cost program for middle and high school students takes place once a month to teach how to critically read art, engage in the subject matter, learn about the personal and historical aspects about the time in which the artist lived, and to learn how to educate their peers and the community as a docent. Leora says

At Right:

the students come from all backgrounds in public and private high schools “using the universal language of art to transcend culture, race and religion.”

Additional Holocaust Education programming includes an impactful 15 minute virtual reality component that travels with the exhibit and allows audiences to step into the past. Participants from locations as varied as the Viewpoint School and Los

Angeles City Hall engage in interactive experiences in an inclusive safe space. Spectators can virtually walk into two of Labkovski’s paintings depicting his childhood in Vilna. This includes Leora’s great grandfather’s house followed by a walk into the Vilna Center Marketplace where they can interact with characters and go into a library to take out a book. Students are empowered after being trained to nonjudgementally combine art and history in innovative ways to educate their peers and community on the existence of the Holocaust.

“It is much more than a body of artwork. It is a tool to remember. It is a tool to document, and a tool to educate,” asserts Leora. Labkovski’s visual diary is critically important because it provides a multisensory experience of being immersed in the artist’s life before, during and after the Holocaust. The collection is almost entirely self-portraiture and bridges the past to the present by interweaving multigenerational history, art, everyday living with technology.

- LEORA RAIKIN -

The project engages the difficult subject matter of the Holocaust in a palatable manner by displaying the artist in the normalcy of his life, connecting to learners for whom reading facts about a genocide might not evoke an emotion. Jennifer Lopata promises to continue to advocate for the enduring

medium of artwork that links Labkovski’s life, the history of the Jewish community, and the loss of this community so we shall never forget. HH

CHILI RELENO CASSEROLE

SPICE THINGS UP FOR SPRING WITH THIS FIERY DISH

AS CREATED BY DEB SEROR

David and Deb Seror with grandchildren, Landon (4 1/2), Connor (3) and Harper (8 months)
RESIDENT

Ingredients:

• 2 tablespoons flour

• 1/2 cup milk

• 8 eggs

• 3, 7 oz. cans diced green chili peppers

• 4 cups shredded Mexican cheese blend (about 1 lb)

• 1/2 teaspoon pepper

• 1/4 teaspoon salt

Directions:

Lightly Grease 9”x 13” glass baking dish.

Gradually add the flour to the milk so that the flour mixes smoothly. Add the eggs and beat or whisk the mixture.

Using 1 1/2 cans, arrange the green chili peppers in the prepared baking dish covering the bottom completely.

Sprinkle half of the shredded cheese over the top of the chili peppers. Add another layer of green chili peppers and shredded cheese.

Pour the egg mixture over the cheese and sprinkle with salt and pepper.

Let the casserole stand for 30 minutes.

At this point, you can either bake immediately or cover and refrigerate for cooking the next day.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Bake about 45 minutes until the casserole is slightly puffed in the center and golden brown about the edges.

Cool for 20 minutes to allow the casserole to set and serve.

If you already have enough spice in your life, or have kids, you may want to cut back on the green chili peppers. HH

MAKING LIFE EASIER ON YOUR SENIOR DOG

With new advances in medicine, both humans and dogs are living longer than ever, but this leads to some special considerations for a growing population of senior dogs. Read on to learn more about some challenges that senior dogs may face, and how we can help them.

As dogs (and humans) get older, their senses diminish. The first sense that dogs begin to lose is often hearing. This is usually a gradual change, and most owners don’t even realize

their dog has begun to lose some hearing until the hearing loss is quite significant. Don’t worry though, dogs are remarkably adaptable and compensate in other ways. It can be helpful for owners to communicate with their dogs by clapping, or using hand movements along with common commands such as “sit”, “stay”, or “come”. Once the dog begins to associate the command with the hand movement, the verbal command may no longer be necessary, which is helpful for a dog with hearing loss. Eyesight in dogs can also gradually diminish, however it is important to distinguish between normal age

related changes, and more significant blindness. Lenticular sclerosis is a normal age related change that occurs as the lens ages. This results in a bluish or cloudy haze of the lens, which is visible through the pupil. However, this age related change does not cause significant vision loss. While lenticular sclerosis can appear as a cloudy lens, it is important to distinguish it from another lens disease called cataracts. Cataracts are not a normal age related change, and when left untreated can cause damage and inflammation to the eye, leading to blindness. If you think your dog may have a more serious eye

As dogs are living longer, we are seeing an increase in cases of Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (CCD), or “doggy dementia.” CCD is believed to be similar to Alzheimer’s Disease in humans. CCD in dogs presents as a decline in mental function that leads to disorientation, pacing, accidents in the house, vocalizing, changes in social behavior, and changes in sleep patterns. We are still learning about CCD in dogs, and while we do not have a cure for this disease, there are some medications that can help your dog to feel better and relax, and get a good night’s sleep.

Older dogs may have a higher rate of joint disease like arthritis that can affect their mobility. As joint disease progresses, pain medications may be helpful for your dog’s comfort. Alternative therapies such as laser therapy and acupuncture can also be helpful in alleviating pain and increasing function and mobility. Laser therapy reduces inflammation and brings blood flow to the area, and some studies have actually shown

that laser therapy can increase ATP production in the cell, the key to the cell’s energy. Acupuncture can reduce pain, increase neurotransmitter release, reduce inflammation, and reduce muscle tension. No matter what age your dog is, one way to help prevent joint disease is to give them a quality joint supplement. Joint supplements are intended to prevent joint disease, but are helpful at any stage. Look for a product that contains glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, as well as green lipped mussel and curcumin. While supplements are not proven to treat disease, these ingredients are thought to reduce inflammation and reduce incidence and severity of joint disease.

Keeping your dog active is a huge part of keeping your dog healthy. You may have heard the phrase, “a body in motion, stays in motion.” This saying applies to both humans and dogs. Exercise is so important in keeping your senior dog’s weight at an optimal level,

as well as for promoting joint health. If your dog does have arthritis or seems stiff or painful, there are ways to accommodate these conditions while still providing exercise. Low impact exercise is a great way for our senior friends to remain active. Low impact exercise can include walking and swimming, as opposed to high impact exercises that include running or jumping. Other modifications that may help senior dogs include decreasing the length or speed of their walks, or breaking their walks into shorter but more frequent walks. The key is to provide adequate low impact exercise, but also be mindful of not allowing your dog to over exert him or herself.

Your veterinarian can help you evaluate the special needs and limitations of your senior friend, and help you to make the correct accommodations in their life. Annual senior examinations and bloodwork are crucial to helping diagnose potential issues early on, which allows for better treatment options. Not only can we give our dogs longer lives, but we can give them better quality lives as well. HH

TRAILS!

THE HIDDEN HILLS EQUESTRIAN SERVICES COMMITTEE IS HARD AT WORK KEEPING ONE OF OUR COMMUNITY’S MOST DISTINCT AND SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS ALIVE.

The most outstanding planned equestrian communities conserve land and utilize the rural environment to serve the needs of many participants. A.E. Hanson created a community that would eventually have approximately 30 miles of trails and three arenas available for use by all the residents of Hidden Hills. Our trails are identified by openings and exits among the familiar white three-rail fences indicating gateways to hidden natural features, spectacular 360 degree San Fernando Valley views, and pastoral destinations that are the foundation of our community. The trails are a tremendously valuable amenity serving the needs of both equestrians and pedestrians who enjoy multiple physical disciplines granted in the unique open spaces of our city.

Horse shows, gymkhanas, and polo games were originally held on vacant lots throughout the community before the City approved the construction

of three arenas. The Saddle Creek Arena is four acres encompassing an enclosed Team Penning/Gymkhana arena, standard size Dressage arena, 60’ Round Pen, picnic tables, hitching posts, water trough, drinking fountain, and portable bathroom facilities. The Spring Valley Arena was built when the land that is north of Spring Valley and Old Eldorado Meadow was developed and it now includes tennis courts, a large arena, a 2/3 size Dressage arena, a snack shack with announcer’s booth and bathroom facilities, and a park with a grass lawn and a childrens play area. Besides being an equestrian area, the Spring Valley Arena is used for the yearly Fiesta and other equestrian events, such as Gymkhana, Vaulting, Pony Rides, and Barrel Racing. The Lewis & Clark Arena was donated by a longtime resident and includes a hitching post, water trough, drinking fountain, and is a very quiet and pleasant place to work one’s horse.

The Hidden Hills Equestrian Services Committee (ESC) oversees the repairs and maintenance of the trail systems, the Saddle Creek, Spring Valley, and Lewis & Clark Arenas. It assists and advises the HHCA Board of Directors and Management in establishing and promoting equestrian policy, education, safety, health,

charitable, and social programs to foster and to preserve the unique equestrian character of Hidden Hills. Chairperson Sarah Phillips, Debbie Kulik, Keith Christian, Jill Green, Lonna Weber, Linda Yallen, Karen Lipman, & Linda Raznick heavily rely on public support to retain the connection to the historically agricultural nature of our equestrian community. Property values rise as demand grows for highly valued lots with exclusive access to open space and the opportunity to interact with horses, goats, & sheep.

To accomplish its responsibilities, the Committee has divided the community into six areas and assigned a Committee member to monitor each area. Committee members usually ride their areas at least once per week, with the entire Committee reviewing each area at least once per year on a Committee trail ride. The Committee has also developed a trail map which has been color-coded to designate grades of steepness for each trail.

Committee members stand ready to show new residents the trail system. A trail ride can be arranged by contacting the Administration office. The Committee meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Center. HH

MAKE FAMILY SPRING BREAK

A

BREEZE

written by Elyse Glickman

an Diego County is unique among California’s countless travel destinations, densely packing the city-break-ready San Diego, sophisticated wineries, spas, outdoor activities, natural phenomena and family-friendly activities into a relatively small geographic area. If you live in suburban Los Angeles, it’s a nobrainer Spring Break family getaway thatrequires little planning and almost painless travel by car.

While the city never disappoints, Carlsbad actually may be the best destination for families wanting to unplug but still be minutes from the coast and its charming villages. And while boutique resorts are undeniably romantic for couples, there’s

something to be said for large resorts, where every member of the family has many options for enjoying spring break their way.

Cape Rey Resort and Park Hyatt Aviara, Carlsbad: WEEKEND GETAWAYQUICK GETAWAY
Cape Rey Resort Hilton and Park Hyatt Aviara are perfect for the occasion. Both resorts, in very different ways, hit the sweet spot between on-site amenities and location.
TOP: Cape Rey’s breathtaking gardens as the sun goes down.
BOTTOM LEFT: Enjoy a delectable Scottish Egg at the Park Hyatt Aviara. BOTTOM RIGHT: Take in the picturesque sunset from Cape Rey’s adult pool.

Either way, this means that parents can take advantage of “couples time” and “me time,” while the kids can cut loose in a safe place until it’s time for some family bonding and adventure. The resorts are minutes away from local highlights such as Carlsbad Village shopping, Legoland, the Del Mar Race Track, and springtime-only attractions such as The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch, open March through Mother’s Day, with a roster of activities that include afternoon teas, outdoor concerts, yoga classes, dinners and more.

The Cape Rey Resort and Spa (managed by Hilton) can claim the Carlsbad shores of the Pacific Ocean as its backyard, with only 150 steps separating civilization and the surf and coastline. The resort’s ambiance blends the earthy elegance of wine country-inspired “Craftsman” style with breezy “beach house” lightness that frames the wonders of what lies just beyond the windows, decks, and terraces.

Even with many choice restaurants a few minutes away in Carlsbad Village, one cannot go wrong with the property’s own Chandler’s, which overlooks the ocean and offers an approachable-but-sophisticated assortment of California coastal fare, including Shrimp Nachos, Kale Caesar Salad, Short Rib Flatbread, and a vegan “Impossible” burger with all of the fixings. Come for dinner to try such signatures as Crispy Skin Verlasso Salmon (pan roasted salmon, shrimp, clams, mussels, potato

gnocchi, French baguette crostini, saffron aioli, tomato fennel sauce) or Ribeye with smoked pork belly potato hash, charred broccolini and bordelaise.

Spa enthusiasts will find the Ocean Crest Spa on property, noted for its use of environmentally sensitive and regionallycreated products (such as Osea Malibu, Conscious Choice Skincare, and California’s Tasha & Co. Organics) and exclusive treatments with custom-blended and locallysourced ingredients including the Ocean Journey Signature Body Rituals, Red Flower Fields Scrub and Massage and the Sea of Life Soothing & Calming Facial.

There are plenty of sporty outdoor activities right on property that ensures you can get the full Carlsbad experience without leaving the resort. These run the gamut from relaxing sailboat cruises and local deep-sea fishing to more active pursuits such as paddle boarding, horseback riding, snorkeling, surf lessons, and kayak exploration. Traditional bikes are available for use free of charge to guests on a first-come, first-served basis. If you want to take the cycling experience to the next level, meanwhile, have the concierge organize an adventure with Coastal Electric Bike to experience the latest

form of “coasting” that’s already taken much of Europe by storm.

The Park Hyatt Aviara (noted for its spa and extended wellness offerings) recently underwent a $50+ million property-wide renovation. As a result, the 327 guest rooms and suites are designed to be almost selfcontained personal “retreats” in their own right, with oversized marble baths and dual sinks with private balconies overlooking the Aviara Golf Course, Batiquitos Lagoon or coastal foothills amid the lush 200 acres it is situated on.

The crown jewel of the Park Hyatt Aviara is the 1,640-square-foot Blue Heron Suite, with prime views of the Aviara Golf Course and Batiquitos Lagoon (a protected ecological preserve that is one of the few remaining tidal wetlands on the Southern California coast). Perfectly appointed for the ultimate family getaway or business retreat, the suite includes one king bed, a separate living room, dining area that seats eight, two full bathrooms, two spacious furnished balconies, a kitchenette, and the option to connect to a two-bedroom suite.

The culinary experience of the marquee steakhouse restaurant, Ember & Rye, has also been elevated with an assist from celebrity Chef Richard Blais, adding contemporary

and global touches to classic chops and seafood fare. The decor also blends old and new, as the space overall has a contemporary country club feel that’s updated with vibrant colors and quirky, bold patterns influenced by a Mid-Century modern sensibility. Ponto Lago, meanwhile, offers Baja-style cuisine upgraded with locally sourced ingredients as well as fresh pressed juices and healthy (yet never boring) selections.

On its own, the Park Hyatt Aviara Spa fills an impressive 15,000 square feet of space with 20 treatment rooms, an indoor solarium lounge, a couple’s suite with fireplace, semi-`private pool, Swiss shower, aromatic steam rooms, saunas, and whirlpools. In addition to a prolific menu of massages, facials, and treatments, along with monthly specials. There are also customizable spa packages for groups of five guests or more where a generous host can mix and match luxury products, services, and delectable light bites. The private spa suite with outdoor whirlpool or private cabana at one of our resort pool decks can also be booked for private events.

The nationally acclaimed VeraVia, meanwhile, offers next-level allinclusive 1, 2, or 3-day “wellness journeys” as well as transformative, immersive and comprehensive wellness retreats from 1 to 4 weeks. All retreat packages are fully customized to the

guests’ health goals, with a structured program that may encompass fitness classes, educational workshops, personal training, nutritional consultations, yoga or guided meditation, spa time, healthy personalized meals, and more. To ensure the best results, no more than ten guests stay at the facility at a time.

Healthy pursuits extend to the resort’s top ranked tennis courts and clinics as well as Aviara Golf Club, the only San Diego area golf course designed by Arnold Palmer. While it is also recognized as one of the country’s best by ‘Golf Digest’ and ‘Golf Magazine’ for its gorgeous and challenging coastal layout, a number of golf clinics are offered for an additional fee for players of all ages and ability levels. If golf is not your thing, the Batiquitos Lagoon trail is accessible on the property as are personalized surf instruction sessions that can be arranged through the concierge.
