THE CALABASAS PUMPKIN FESTIVAL RETURNS

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 17 th 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

The Calabasas Pumpkin Festival will be returning this year for one day only on Sunday, October 17! Did you know that Calabasas got its name from the Spanish word “Calabaza” meaning “pumpkin”or “gourd”? Local legend has it that in the late 1700’s, explorer Juan Bautista de Anza was traveling through the area now known as Calabasas when suddenly, his wagon full of pumpkins overturned. A few months later, the area saw its first pumpkin patch.

More than 200 years later, the Calabasas community has made it a tradition to celebrate its namesake with friends, family, fun and of course, pumpkins! There will be a hometown marketplace where you can shop from vendors

selling jewelry, home & garden items, baby clothes plus pumpkin, harvest & Halloween items. There will be live music, a food court, inflatable rides & games, reptile & bug programs, and fun contests for all.

Tickets to the City of Calabasas Pumpkin Festival Tickets are on sale now. Between September 1 through October 8, you can get your tickets for the early bird price promotion of $8 per ticket. Tickets must be purchased in person at the park office located at Juan de Anza Park, located at 3701 Lost Hills Road in Calabasas.

For more information about this exciting and fun family event, visit: www. calabasaspumpkinfestival.com

Halloween in Hidden Hills is a big deal. Residents and visitors of all ages seem to descend on the city to celebrate. Round Meadow Road between Long Valley and Jed Smith, along with Wingfield Road is always the most impacted. Consequently, the HHCA, in consultation with the City and the Sheriffs Department, close the short section of Round Meadow Road, most impacted by the festivities. In addition, additional Sheriffs Department personnel are placed within the city. Finally, temporary lighting is placed at strategic locations to help ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists.

ROAD CLOSURES.

6:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.

Wingfield Road and Round Meadow Road will be closed to vehicular traffic between Jed Smith Road (North) and Long Valley Road. There will also be no parking on the parkways between the hours of 5:30 p.m. and 11 :00 p.m. Golf carts will be permitted to drive on Round Meadow Road, but no motorized vehicles will be permitted on Wingfield Road. Residents on

Wingfield and the closed section of Round Meadow must park their cars outside the closed section before 5:30 p.m. if they plan to leave the community, and anyone in that area who is expecting guests must direct them to arrive before 5:30 p.m. or park on Long Valley Road. The Hidden Hills Community Association reminds resident to please notify your guests to use the appropriate gate so they can avoid the road closures!

HALLOWEEN GATE PROCEDURES

Due to the amount of traffic at the gates on Halloween, no callups will be made, and no calldowns will be accepted by the gate officers after 5:00 p.m. on Halloween. All guests must be entered online at www. community.dwellinglive.com by the resident . Please refer to the Gate Operations Manual pages 10 and 11, section 6.4 for procedures for admitting guests. Please contact the Hidden Hills Community Association by Friday October 29th at 5:00 p.m. for anyfurther questions, 818-227-6657.

PART-TIME HIDDEN HILLS RESIDENT, EVAN HEFFERNAN, SETS HIS SIGHTS ON THE 2024 PARIS OLYMPICS

Evan Heffernan is a 23-yearold competitive athlete from Santa Barbara, CA that has dedicated his life to the water. He splits his time between Hidden Hills, Huntington Beach, and his home town depending on the surf and the season. Ever since he was a child, he and his 3 older brothers lived and breathed anything that involved the ocean from sailing to surfing to now formula kiteboarding. Dreaming of an Olympic campaign since before he can remember, Evan is now taking on the great 4-year challenge to represent the US in the 2024 Olympics for formula kite in Paris, France with a goal of at least 80+ training hours in the water a month.

His love for being on the water really took hold during a tough period in high school as his family confronted some health scares. Whether it was hundreds of dolphins emerging out of the water all around him or a whale breaching in the distance, being in the ocean was an unparalleled escape where he could free himself from the negativity that had been weighing him down. “I am beyond thankful to be able to experience this kind of freedom on a daily basis”, Evan reminisced. And he hopes others might find solace vicariously through his journey as well. The world can appear bleak at times, especially during an international pandemic, and he believes his campaign can serve as a

Woodland Hills

positive outlet for those with a passion for surfing, the ocean, or competitive sports like the Olympics.

Kiteboarding, kitesurfing, or competitively known as formula kite is an extreme watersport that uses a hydrofoil board and power kite utilizing the wind and sea to propel the boarder along the water’s surface. Harnessing the power of a massive kite whilst reading the wind and waves can be extremely dangerous without proper training and requires an extensive understanding of how to read

the weather and swell. Competitively, athletes are judged on speed, expression & style, and skill showcased through tricks, jumps, and height achieved.

Competing in seven different countries so far, Evan is extremely grateful to practice a sport that allows him to discover so many different cultures and make connections around the world. Coincidentally, the country he found most intriguing is where kitesurfing’s roots originate, dating back to 13th century China. While he has competed for most of his life and will continue to participate in events over the next four years, he admits his strategy will not include competing in as many events as he can. Evan is focused on getting in as much practice as possible by maximizing his time on the water instead of being on the road traveling to various competitions. While he needs to commit full-time to his campaign to successfully take his spot in the 2024 Olympics, he is currently supporting himself as a software engineer. Inspired by a high school teacher years ago, he started his career path in engineering and computer programing but hopes to soon dedicate all of his time to training. A typical day for Evan includes a morning workout before work until he can step out to check the wind before his afternoon training session.

While he regularly trains solo, he is also working alongside a team of other

young athletes in Santa Barbara to enhance his training and learn from his peers. Evan has noticed that because of the dynamics of the board used in formula kite, the bigger you are the greater advantage you have. As a result, he finds himself needing to work out in addition to his drills with his team and individual sessions. Though he has been competing for years, he confessed he still feels nervous before an event. When he prepares for a contest he says “I rely on what I practice to give me confidence in the arena” and trusts completely that his hard work will be obvious in his performance come gametime.

As the top-ranked American kiter, Evan believes he has the best chance at being selected to be the US representative in the next games and thinks his main differentiator is not only his skill but his mindset. Comparing his mentality to having two different personalities, Evan’s unwavering devotion to his practice gives him tunnel vision when he is in the zone and the ability to step away and debrief to learn from his sessions. In just two years he progressed from unranked in 2017 to 5th ranked internationally in 2019, setting the tone for his long-awaited campaign and showcasing his undeniable prowess. His ultimate goal is to have the most productive amount of hours on the water and is very optimistic it will soon be feasible financially to leave his job to live out his Olympic dreams with the help of his generous donors, but he cannot do it without help.

If you would like to support Evan in his campaign to win the Gold medal in the 2024 Olympics, there are several ways to get involved. You can make a one-time or monthly tax-deductible donation to The Skiff Sailing Foundation 501(c)(3) which supports his campaign with equipment and expenses enabling Evan to focus on training and ensure he has the best equipment after many hours on the water. As a monthly contributor, you get access to his exclusive blog, The Journey, to stay up to date on his accomplishments and progress as he works toward his Gold medal. DON’T WAIT! VACCINATE!

If you have been keeping up with the news lately, you may have heard that there are two outbreaks spreading through the canine population in certain areas of Southern California. The first disease that is becoming more prevalent in our area is Canine Leptospirosis. Leptospirosis, or “Lepto” as it is commonly called, is caused by a bacteria called Leptospira interrogans. Multiple species can be infected including humans, dogs, rats, mice, cows, and pigs, and other wildlife. The bacteria is transmitted when the urine of an infected animal contacts the eyes, nose, mouth, or broken skin of another animal or human. Contaminated water or mud is a common way that animals can become infected. Symptoms can often be nonspecific and include lethargy, decreased appetite, and muscle weakness, but very often include severe kidney damage. Currently, an outbreak is occurring in both Los Angeles and Ventura

Counties. In order to prevent your pets from getting sick, don’t allow them to drink standing water outside and keep your yard free from rodents, especially rats. The best way to prevent your dogs from becoming infected with Lepto is vaccination. The yearly Leptospirosis vaccine is a safe way to protect your canine friend. It is more commonly being included in vaccine protocols so check with your vet to see if your dog has already received it. Vaccination is especially important because Leptospirosis is transmittable to humans and can cause severe health effects.

The second outbreak making news is Canine Influenza. Canine Influenza, also known as dog flu, is a respiratory virus that infects dogs. Don’t worry, although it is a type of influenza virus, there are no reported cases of transmission to humans. Symptoms of the virus include cough, nasal discharge, fever, lethargy, and reduced appetite, but rarely

can progress to pneumonia and death. Similar to other common respiratory diseases, influenza is spread through respiratory droplets or through contact with contaminated surfaces. Spread is very common in kennels and shelters, as well as dog parks, doggie daycares, grooming facilities, or any place where lots of dogs congregate. The best way to protect your dog is to vaccinate! There is an effective vaccine available for canine influenza. Make sure that the vaccine protects against both prevalent strains of canine influenza, H3N2 and H3N8. Ask your vet whether your dog is at high risk for canine influenza and could benefit from the vaccine. To help keep your dogs healthy, don’t wait, vaccinate! HH

SHE MAY HAVE GROWN UP RIDING THE TRAILS OF HIDDEN HILLS, BUT WHEN IT’S TIME TO COMPETE IN THE ARENA, THIRTEEN-YEAR-OLD SOPHIA

It’s a good time to be Sophia Austin. The 8th grade student at the Viewpoint School is quickly becoming a very competent and winning competitive horse jumper. Living in the equestrian community of Hidden Hills, it’s not surprising that Sophia inherited a love for the sport and the work ethic to gallop to the top.

Riding has not been an overnight success for this poised thirteenyear-old who has spent almost her entire life on the back of a horse. You may have seen her at the age of two getting pony rides around the neighborhood from Janet Wolf.

Perhaps you noticed her cantering in Ahmanson Ranch or trotting on the many miles of bridle trails behind your home. Have you viewed her training in one of the three dragged & watered arenas in our neighborhood, or practicing jumping over poles? It is a memorable sight to catch a glimpse of the young rider standing on her bareback Western horse Rojo as it walks along the roadway.

Sophia was introduced to the sport with a pony ride. After a couple of years, she began training at a show barn, learning to jump at age 8, but soon stopped when she found it got too competitive. Her confidence for jumping returned

after trail riding for two years, and with the help of Coach Kathy Eskritt, Sophia commenced training once again. In addition to working on the technicalities of jumping and riding competitively, Sophia is fully responsible for the care of Rojo and her beloved Buckskin Pony named Philip who are stabled at her home. She is grateful for living in Hidden Hills because the benefit is that on any given day, she can be seen on a trail right next to her home tacking and warming up on her horses.

Even though Sophia started riding on a stubborn beginner horse, she met her match when she was paired with Philip. She realized this horse

was special when she first tried him, and quickly learned she was right after she got to know him. Sophia emphasizes how much her horse Philip has taught her. “The best part of riding is working with an animal that you cannot talk to, but you are accomplishing things that are kind of crazy. The hardest things are when you or the horse has an off day or when it gets stressful around a competition. It’s never the horse’s fault, it’s something you are doing wrong. It’s kind

of hard knowing that it’s your fault and you could have done this or that better.”

Sophia conveys that it is Philip that mainly instructs her on how to ride, not the other way around. Philip taught her jumping from poles on the ground to cross rails to the Hunter Division. They now compete together in the Jumper Classes at the 2 foot nine, which is a pattern judged on time and how fast you can get around the course of ten jumps without any faults. They have had much success competing together in over 50 equestrian competitions at the LA Equestrian Center, Hanson Dam, the ETI National Convention, Santa Barbara, and Palm Desert.

Philip & Sophia both share incredible hearts, focus, and a powerful dedication to

the sport of Equestrianism. The confident pony never stops surprising Sophia with its guidance that helps her find balance in her daily activities, with friends, and in the riding arena. In life there may be obstacles, and Sophia encourages us to

trust the horse because it will never hurt you; and whenever something is scary, it usually works out. If Sophia continues to be influenced by Philip, we should not be surprised that her raw talent will help her grow into a graceful & purposeful champion. HH

Field of LIGHT

Get illuminated by this fully immersive Paso Robles art installation.

Field of Light at Sensorio is a unique outdoor solar powered light exhibit that unifies art, technology, and nature. This incomparably beautiful experience presents two installations by British artist Bruce Munro who is best known for immersive large-scale light-based installations inspired largely by his interest in shared human experiences. Munro produces both intimate story-pieces and monumental temporary experiential artworks as exemplified by Field of Light at Sensorio which is found on 328 acres of rolling hills in Paso Robles.

Field of Light is a 15-acre self guided walk-through experience which is Munro’s largest art installation to date and the first U.S. exhibit powered entirely by solar. It is comprised of more than 58,800 stemmed glass spheres on narrow stems lit by fiber optics that are powered by solar panels. The lights carpet a large canyon and begin to illuminate at dusk to become more vibrant as darkness falls. The ethereal field of illuminated blooms sway in the wind as they hug the landscape and wrap around old coastal oak trees. As the colors subtlety morph in

slow rolling waves, it is easy to imagine that one is immersed in a dream-like modern Monet painting.

Visitors will not be disappointed as they stroll along a 2 mile trail that winds throughout the gently illuminated landscape. You are invited to stop along the pathways or sit on one of the many benches in order to see the subtle color changes that are occurring. It is quite calming to relax as the bulbs slowly glow brighter and brighter under the star filled skies that are untouched by any outside lighting.

The Light Towers are an intriguing new exhibit at Sensorio. Located adjacent to the grounds of the fields, it celebrates Paso Robles’ extensive wine country by paying tribute to the over 200 wineries and vineyards that blanket this North County city. As you meander down another thin dimly lit path, the newest installation reveals 6-foot cylindrical towers of 17,388 wine bottles also glowing with morphing fiber optic lights. The 69 towers have 252 bottles per column, and the lights change color in time with an entrancing African themed musical score.

These stunning light displays captivate visitors of all ages, inviting them to engage with nature and the environment through a light based sculptural experience. The all year round magical event has been in place for over 2 years with plans to add other artistic installations in the near future, and to build a hotel and convention center by 2025.

Sensorio has implemented COVID safety precautions, including timed ticket entry, limited group size (six maximum), monitored and enforced social distancing, mask coverings, and other safety measures to guard everyone’s health. They offer guests live music, food and beverage via food trucks and beverage kiosks, with socially distant seating arrangements that conform to all safety and health guidelines. Enjoy the exhibit! WEEKEND GETAWAYQUICK GETAWAY

San Diego represents the best of the Southern California lifestyle for visitors around the U.S. and the world, yet all that’s great about it had to start somewhere. Point Loma happens to be that place, where California itself is said to have taken root a couple of centuries before it took shape as a tourism destination, port city and embodiment of the “American Dream.” And while we’re on the subject of comparing San Diego and Southern California to other dreamy vacation destinations, it is interesting to note that experienced travelers will often draw comparisons between San Diego’s beach communities to cities as diverse as Lisbon, Sydney and Cape Town, thanks to its mild weather, family-friendly beaches and colorful architectural aesthetic.

Celebrate the California Lifestyle and enjoy the sun in the Monsaraz’s courtyard.

As leisure travel around the world resumes, it’s fitting that

The Monsaraz San Diego, part of Hilton’s Tapestry Collection boutique hotel division, debuted this past summer as the area’s first new property in the area in over a decade. The Monsaraz opened its doors right after Southern California travel was allowed to make its comeback. However, what makes the new hotel’s debut exciting is that it translates the Southern California vacation into something that’s at once international and familiar, sophisticated yet laid back, and tailored to the area’s geographical attributes... all things that speak to the

experienced 21st Century traveler.

Under the direction of KNA Design, R&R Construction and JWDA Architects, the 92-room hotel developed by Lamming Co. (name other properties) weaves together Point Loma’s timeless appeal and easygoing surroundings into an immersive “ecosystem” of relaxation through the use of hand-hewn materials, custom handcrafted tiles, contemporary European furnishings and breezy art pieces situated throughout. The interiors are a nod to Portugal’s airy and artisanal aesthetic, (interesting to consider, as many Portuguese refer to their

the spaces’ elements, they take on a different, ethereal flavor after sundown. The third floor “Hideaway” translates the hotel’s distinctive vibe into a more intimate, quieter context.

The 60-seat Westerly Public House is nestled into the heart of the hotel, and transports one to Sydney, Australia (by way of San Diego, of course) through San Diego Chef Jesse Paul’s “Cali-Aussie” vision. The concept may seem a bit kitchy at first glance, with a menu full of catch-phrase signature dishes including Mushroom Toasties, “Bloomin’ Mushroom,” Smoked Fish Mezze and Green Chile Prawns. However, give in to the full experience and it ends up being a celebration of the sensory aspects of the big beach town lifestyle shared by both cities. It’s fitting that the indoor/ outdoor space flows into another communal courtyard, and everything the that makes up this eatery, from the produce and proteins to the furnishings, is sustainably sourced.

Depending on what time of day you check out the Westerly, you can drink in beautifully-wrought craft cocktails, your favorite San Diego-made craft beer or a rich cup of hot or iced coffee from San Diego institution Dark Horse Coffee Roasters. (Yes, the management ultimately wants you to remember you are in one of the best spots of San Diego county!). The private rooms and meeting spaces also take full advantage of the talented Chef Paul’s handiwork and the unique aesthetic, while being fully functional and adaptable to a variety of conferences, meetings and networking sessions. (This is where the benefits of the property’s Hilton management proves to be an asset, even as the indie flavor of the Monsaraz remains intact.
