GATEWAYto THE PAST

At the inception of Hidden Hills as a private community in the 1950’s, one of its founding members, Mary Cleaveland, requested A.E Hanson that a gate and gatehouse be installed at the entrance of Long Valley Road in order to facilitate entrance with the increasing

amounts of developers and construction coming onto the rural land. In 1974 the beauty and charm of the community was still attracting more residents, sparking ideas from the Architectural Committee of Hidden Hills to add a second gate house to the Round Meadow end.

June 2021 | The Hidden Hills Register & Resource Guide 17
Joni Bacon Mitchell

Round Meadow and Long Valley were the only entrances and exits, and the Round Meadow border was simply a wooden gate arm controlled by a key card. Soon this method gained public resistance as people were constantly misplacing their cards and getting locked out of their own city, having to wait for someone to let them in. Some could not stand the wait and opted to simply grab and bend the gate arm until it snapped, or simply drive through the arm as if it were not there.

Head of the Hidden Hills road committee, Joe Indelicato, knew that this could not last and entrusted his dear friend, head of the Hidden Hills Architectural Committee, Edwin Cleaveland, to draw out a design, that way, during the daytime, a guard could facilitate entrance, instead of a key card. Known for his detailed artistry, Edwin swiftly produced a quaint gate house about the “size of a little ticket booth” for his sons Jim and Thomas to build for the city.

An architectural student at Cal Poly, Thomas decided to prefabricate the wall pieces, windows, doors and entire roof of the gate house offsite in his backyard on Long Valley Road. It was important that the structure went up as quicky as possible due to the fact that construction of the gate house would be completely in the middle of the road and oncoming traffic would have to be slowed down until it was finished.

Jim says, “When you were busy in the middle of the road people would drive up wanting to chit chat — People like Buzz Aldrin — and you can’t just tell someone who has been to the moon and back to go jump in a lake. He was a great man and hilarious conversation, but I began to think ‘I am never going to get this gate house finished’.”

As only “Murphy’s Law” could dictate, just as Jim was completing the little gate house with a white oil paint finish, someone rammed into it with their car, knocking it off its

18 The Hidden Hills Register & Resource Guide | June 2021

foundation. Fortunately, the Gate House was promptly fixed, being pulled back and secured into its foundation once again. Thomas decided to add steel vertical poles filled with concrete positioned just outside the building on all sides to give the entrance more definition to prevent someone else from “taking it out”.

Today, the gatehouse has been remodeled with a more expansive design, but the foundation of old Hidden Hills rurality and familial memories will always lay beneath the structure of Round Meadow Gate House. HH

Fresco Pasta is a small, local, family owned business found only at local Farmers Market. Founded in 2015 by Francesco Angiuli, Fresco Pasta brings the Italian tradition to your table. Their fresh pasta is made daily and we use only fresh organic ingredients from local farmers. Francesco grew up in small town, Adelfia, near Bari where his grandmother Maria taught him how to make the best fresh pasta at home.

After many years living in the States, Francesco missed the

original tradition of eating and making handmade fresh pasta, which inspired him to start FrescoPasta. Their desire is to offer specialty boutique pasta that you can’t find at your local grocery store.

the gluten before baking, resulting in zero inflammation, making the bread good for the body as well as delicious. Long fermented sourdough is what Topanga Grain likes to call “Nature’s Gluten Free bread”...it is the way we were intended to eat bread. This is bread that people with gluten intolerances or diabetes can eat due to the high fiber and protein along with the breakdown of the gluten removing the body’s inflammation response. We forget that wheat is a living seed that will sprout and grow if planted which means it has what is some say is cellular resonance. You can feel that living energy in the dough. It is just incredibly delicious, healthy and very therapeutic to make at the same time. HH

All of Topanga Grain’s bread is whole grain sourdough using only organic, plant based ingredients. They take the time to stone mill their organic grain right before mixing and baking. Stone milling means they are are using the whole seed, which provides protein, b-vitamins fiber, enzymes, and natural oils from the seed in their bread. Their sourdough starter has been fermenting for approximetly 3 years and was made from stone milled whole grain organic flour and filtered water. sAll of their bread is fermented in what is known as European style “long fermentation” over 3 days. This gives the beneficial bacteria in the sourdough a chance to pre-digest and breakdown

SUMMER CAMP AMAZING KID COMPANY

With summer approaching and the pandemic subsiding, social interaction and outdoor play are finally becoming realities for our kids again. Just in time for California’s reopening, Amazing Kids Company will be running a summer camp right down the street at the community center, with their key aim being to give kids “the best day of their life”. Among their array of activities are capture the flag, dodgeball, treasure hunts, water balloon tosses, arts and crafts, pickle spinning contests,

coloring contests, dance contests, karaoke and dozens more. Now with the pool open, water activities in the community center pool will be a part of the program daily.

Mask wearing and temperature checks will follow local guidelines and be in place for the first few weeks at the very least, taking a lead from how the reopening of the state goes. Beginning June 7th from 11am to 1pm, food trucks will be an option for lunch Mondays through Fridays at the Community Center to accommodate the

campers or and any resident who wants to to buy food or drinks. If your kids are older and still want some summer fun, Counselors in Training are a part of the program and can count for community service credit depending on if your child’s school accepts it.

For decades, participating in theater in Hidden Hills has been a quintissential childood experience dozens of residents look back upon fondly. But with the pandemic having taken a lot away fron us, these kids wouldn’t let corona get in the way of creativity. With the coordination of the Jax Musical Theater program, following strict health & safety protocols, these locals were able to perform a musical theater classic, ANNIE. The performers kept their masks on for the entirety of practices and performances, and viewing was limited to immediate family only, who had to be masked as well and PCR tested. These kids and Jax Theater did an incredible job in finding a way to keep the theater tradition going in a fun and safe way. HH

YOUR DOG AND RATTLESNAKE SEASON

As summer is upon us, so is the emergence of scaly critters including the infamous rattlesnake. In our area, there are multiple species of snake that live all around us, but only one species that is venomous - the Southern Pacific Rattlesnake.

Sometimes

confused with their cousins the gopher snake due to their similar coloring, rattlesnakes have a larger triangular head, while gopher snakes tend to be slimmer and thinner. If unsure though, err on the side of caution.

Remember that rattlesnakes may not always have an obvious rattle. These reptiles are a part of life when living in the foothills of Southern California, so here are some helpful

hints for taking care of our furry friends during Rattlesnake season.

Keep your best friend on a leash when hiking or frequenting areas

means that they will be out trying to warm-up sunning themselves in the cool mornings and will be in cooler areas such as holes, rock or wood piles when it’s very hot out. Rattlesnakes are not aggressive and will bite only when they feel threatened or are surprised.

that are likely to harbor snakes. Stay on hiking trails where the brush is cleared and you have a good visual of where you’re stepping. Remember that snakes are cold blooded, which

What to do if your pet is bitten: The most important thing to do if your dog is bitten, is to stay calm and keep your dog calm and quiet, and immediately take your pet to the nearest veterinary emergency hospital. It is advised to call ahead while you are on your way, so that the staff know to expect you and can begin to prepare for your pet’s arrival. It is also important to make sure that the

hospital carries rattlesnake antivenom. Most large emergency hospitals keep it on hand, but because of its expense, many smaller non-emergency vet clinics don’t. If you are unsure if your dog has been bitten by a rattlesnake, here are some clues. Oftentimes you will see puncture marks and swelling, but the difference between swelling from a snake bite, and from another cause such as an insect bite, is that the snake bite will usually be extremely painful. Depending on the severity of the bite, the veterinary clinic may recommend hospitalization, treatment with antivenom, pain medications, antibiotics, and other supportive care.

To prevent a snakebite, consider rattlesnake avoidance training. Often, this is a one-day clinic at which your dog is trained to avoid rattlesnakes using live snakes so your dog can learn the smell and sounds to avoid. They may use an electronic collar to give your dog a small shock when they get close to the rattlesnake. This helps your dog to learn that the sight, smell, and sound of the rattlesnake is associated with an adverse stimulusthe small shock that the collar gives off. The goal is that your dog then learns to avoid the snake completely when he encounters one in the real world.

Another option to consider is the rattlesnake vaccine. Anecdotally, veterinarians report that snake bite patients who have received the vaccine fare better than their non-

vaccinated counterparts. The idea is that if bitten, the consequences of the bite will be less grave than if your dog is not vaccinated. Please remember though, just because your dog has had the rattlesnake vaccine, does NOT mean that he does not need medical care immediately after a bite. It is still vital that you take your dog to an emergency clinic to be evaluated after a snake bite, whether or not he or she is vaccinated.

Rattlesnakes and other critters are a part of life here in the foothills, but we can find ways to coexist and to protect our pets at the same time.

THE BLOWER BAN

Walk outside your door on any day other than Sunday and listen carefully. It may be likely that you won’t hear it immediately because it has become somewhat of a white noise in our community, but listen… through the trees blowing and the whinnies of horses. You will eventually find it… the groan of a gas-powered leaf blower…or two...or more.

Although these ubiquitous contraptions have been officially banned in the city of Hidden Hills since 1994 (yes… they are already illegal) they have nonetheless persisted in their use. Of course, gas powered blowers are far more ef-

ficient than the old-school rake or broom, and allow us to likely save quite a bit on yard maintenance labor costs, but the noise and the exhaust they emit has been widely recognized as outright intolerable. The California Air Resources Board states that the air pollution generated by 1 hour of a gas leaf blower is the equivalent of driving 1,100 miles in a typical car, and if you happen to have your home’s windows open as one goes by, this metric will actually sound just about right.

As alternatives go, highly mobile battery-powered options have come a long way. With a large battery replacing the

42 The Hidden Hills Register & Resource Guide | June 2021

engine that sits upon the user’s back and a small motor integrated into the blowing cylinder, these blowers are quiet, efficient and get the job done. But even electric blowers are a ‘no-no’ in some instances within the city’s gates, namely, anywhere that is not a homeowner’s yard and specifically parkways and trails. Why? The weekly torrent that blows away the leaves and peppercorns also blows away and erodes the decomposed granite and other terrain that make up these surfaces.

Another challenge is the practical cost of acquiring a good electric blower that will last throughout the day. While many gardeners that work in Hidden Hills have recently complied, the cost can set them back as much as $400 for just the blower and another $1,100 for a long-life lithium battery backpack, of which more than one may be needed to get through a day’s work. Many homeowners have stepped up however, willing to help absorb the investment by accepting a nominal monthly increase in their landscaping bill.

So, if your landscape care team has not yet made the switch, you may want to encourage them to do so. These ordinances are now being diligently enforced by the sheriff’s and can carry a hefty fine; $100 for the first offense; $200 for the second violation within one year; and $500 for each additional violation within one year.

The new Ordinance and rules regarding leaf blowers went into effect on May 26, 2021.

To report a leaf blower violation, please contact City Hall at 818-888-9281 or send an email to staff@hiddenhillscity.org. Please provide the address and time of day of the violation.

• ALL LEAF BLOWERS ARE PROHIBITED ON PARKWAYS, ROADWAYS, STREETS, AND PEDESTRIAN OR EQUESTRIAN TRAILS

• ELECTRIC OR BATTERYPOWERED LEAF BLOWERS ARE PERMITTED ON PRIVATE PROPERTY.

• GASOLINE-POWERED LEAF BLOWERS ARE PROHIBITED THROUGHOUT THE CITY WITH NO EXCEPTIONS.

The CAMBRIA LODGE AT MOONSTONE BEACH WHITE WATER

While Paso Robles is recognized as one of the Central Coast’s prime wine country destinations, with nearly 250 wineries to choose from (including the venerable Booker, Justin, Daou and Denner), nearby Cambria remains a bonafide “hidden gem” destination along the coast of California. Here, less is definitely more, with fewer crowds and more space to take in the ocean and natural beauty of the area’s undeveloped beach...perhaps with a glass of well-chosen wine in hand.

In providing the perfect place for that scenario, White Water Cambria Lodge at Moonstone Beach, just may be the most sparkling facet of

Cambria’s coastline. It occupies a sweet spot that’s just south of Big Sur and north of Santa Barbara. Although the property is also a short bike ride (on one of the property’s Linus bikes) to downtown Cambria’s quaint assortment of restaurants and shopping, it gives you the feeling that you’ve practically got the whole “wine country” place to yourself.

Interior designer Nina Freudenberger and PRG Hospitality

Group worked collaboratively to provide a lovely continuity from the outdoors in, blending the best natural elements and color palette of Central California with the sleek, chic and timeless simplicity of the Scandinavian aesthetic rooted in the 1970s.

Freudenberger combines furnishings, artwork and accents to ensure each room is oneof-a-kind, which not only makes the guest feel at home but also pays tribute to the various local artisans and surrounding community. Even with her efforts, all guest rooms feature a signature minibar with locally sourced and crafted snacks,

alcohol, and handmade goods.

Before you even check in, the lobby lounge makes a great first impression, decked out with its own fairly prolific selection of local wines, craft beers, ciders, and spirits carefully chosen to mix and match with Chef Jason

Niederkorn’s small bites and share plates, which also can be enjoyed in the room or as an outdoor picnic. There’s also a touch of Switzerland and France, thanks to the chef’s curation of local cheeses and meats, signature fondue, and farm-inspired breakfast.

The great thing about the minimalist menu is that, while excellent, it compels you to try Cambria’s eclectic mix of restaurants...and their inspired ideas for wine pairings. In town, there’s the Sea Chest

(an old school nautical themed oceanfront restaurant noted for its artistry with seafood dishes), Madeline’s (a lovely cafe/wine shop combo that’s exactly as you would picture it,) Robin’s Restaurant (Thai and Indian fare), The Hidden Kitchen for organic plates, and Indigo Moon, offering laid back fine dining in a historic building.

Of course, to appreciate the rooms and the food, you need to work out, play outside, and take advantage of these wideopen spaces. This is Cambria’s main draw above and beyond

another memorable California “wine country,” and there’s no shortage of ways to do that. In addition to Moonstone Beach, you will find trails and breathtaking views aplenty at Fiscalini Ranch Preserve, The Harmony Headlands and Hearst State Park. If you’re into surfing, there’s a lot to love about the area as well. One of the most secluded surf breaks in the Central Coast is right outside the property’s front door, and it’s typical to see breaks between four and eight feet. The surfing is best when strong swells are moving west to southwest during low-tide, though expert surfers may be interested in seeing the ocean during come storm periods, where waves can be as high as 15 – 20 feet.
