FREE HOME IGNITION ZONE EVALUATION
Residents of Hidden Hills are able to schedule a Home Ignition Zone Evaluation through the Resource Conservation District (RCD) of the Santa Monica Mountains.
A home ignition zone evaluation is a review of the vulnerability of your house and landscape to wildfire and ember-ignition. During this assessment, an evaluator will review defensible space and home hardening principles and make specific recommendations based on your property. Evaluations are performed by trained volunteers and RCD staff and take about 45 to 60 minutes to complete. A summary of all the recommendations along with additional resources and materials is provided at the end of the evaluation.
This service is presently provided free of charge and will remain free until grant funds are exhausted – afterward, the service will continue to be offered for a fee. To make an appointment, contact the RCD’s Community Resilience Coordinator at akunsch@rcdsmm.org and include your address and a phone number.
For home hardening and fire-wise landscaping tips, visit www.defensiblespace.org.

RAISED IN HIDDEN HILLS 4H CLUB
Written by Jacqueline Cleaveland | Photos Courtesy of Jill Hartman
The four leaves, “Heart, hands, head and health” of the 4H program have rung true for many decades, as the program has always focused on teaching children to “learn by doing”, and to care for your surroundings. The club gave the early Hidden Hills kids of the 50’s and 60’s the knowledge and experience about
livestock they needed living in a ranch locale, while also implementing broader life skills such as the value of hard work, consistency and community.
From the ages 10 to 18, each person in the 4H program chose a “project” to complete and then to show at the Los Angeles

county fair during the summer. Usually consisting of raising an animal of livestock such as sheep, horses, cattle, goats, rams, or even chickens. The program also encouraged children to do sewing, electrical or baking projects. Jill Hartman, early Hidden Hills resident and in her childhood an avid 4H participant says that “the point was there was always something for everyone.” For her time in the Hidden Hills 4H club she primarily raised steers, each year having a new calf to care for and then show at the county fair.
Those who chose to raise an animal as their 4H project spent every day leading up to the fair doing whatever they could to make them the most beautiful they could be. From spending hours in the sun feeding and grooming, to participating in educational classes held at Pierce college on how to properly tend to their livestock. It was time consuming hard work, but, in the end, it made the moments getting to congregate with friends and possibly winning ribbons
and prizes for one’s dedication all the more gratifying.
Jill remembers the fair always being a special occasion, with her whole family coming down to watch her show her animals and cheer her on. Usually judged by local ranchers, animals were scored by merits of physical health, such as muscle density and cleanliness. Children would wait their turn coming out with about a half a dozen of their friends and have their animals shown in the arena with a crowd to watch. If an animal caught a judge’s eye to be considered for a ribbon or Grand Champion, they would then visit the pen where it was kept and individually talk to its caregiver.
The fair events lasted more than one day with children, more often than not, climbing under the pen gate to where the animal was and sleeping next to them until morning. Friends would talk to each other through the fences and sweetly reflect upon their day and in the morning, congregate to eat breakfast together. Jill
24 The Hidden Hills Register & Resource Guide | July 2021
says, “there was no sense of competition or cliques. The older kids always sat with the young ones, not necessarily trying to be mentors, but just enjoying being able to spend time together.”
Jill remembers her favorite tradition of the early 4H program was during the holiday season. Her older friends “Jack Hart, Frank and Mikey Strauss and Jim Bevel would take trucks and go out into the hills and cut mistletoe, and I would always try to sneak and go with them.” Gleefully bringing home their findings, they would tie the mistletoe with little red ribbons and sell them for 50 cents in front of the Long Valley Gate, with the money then going to buy warm food and presents for those in need.
A piece of the Hidden Hills 4H club that imprinted upon Jill the most was simply learning “to do the best, and be the best you can.’’ She says what made the 4H club so special at that time was that it was all about support and friendship. “It was part of the whole entire community and felt like we were all in our own little world.”
The 4H club of the 1960’s laid a foundation for the 4H community across Los Angeles county and the still prevalent equestrian programs of Hidden Hills today. HH

CROONING FOR A CAUSE
words and photography by Britt Aaronson
The Hidden Hills Charity Musicale traditionally runs during Valentines Day in February to a packed theater full of neighbors. However due to Covid, the Director & Producer David Stanley decided to do something a little different. Instead of a live performance indoors in the theater, he filmed the cast of 25 performing their favorite love songs in various locations throughout Hidden Hills, including the residents homes, trails, and very recognizable streets.
On a beautiful balmy June night, a screening party
was hosted outdoors at the community center. Various food trucks, candy, popcorn, donuts and margaritas filled the residents stomachs as the cast raised our spirits by entertaining us with their songs and dances. This popular event raised $13,031 for our Local Healthcare Heroes! The funds have been donated to Connecting a Caring Community to sponsor an event for our local essential workers that will take place this fall.
Thank you to all our residents who participated and contributed to the 2021 Hidden Hills Charity Musicale! HH

EQUINE COLIC: “HELP MY HORSE HAS A STOMACH ACHE!”
Written by Allison Tashnek, DVM
What is colic? Colic is a broad term that by definition means “abdominal pain.” There are numerous medical problems in horses that can cause abdominal pain ranging from intestinal impaction, to gas build up, to intestinal torsion. Depending on the situation, colic may be able to be treated simply with a basic medical workup, or may need IV fluids or a complicated abdominal surgery.
Every horse is different, but there are some classic symptoms of equine colic to watch out for. Pawing at the ground, biting at the flank, and rolling on the ground are usually indicative of abdominal pain. Changes in appetite and energy level can also indicate that something is going on. If you notice signs of colic, the first thing to do is to remove any food that your horse has access to, and to call your veterinarian. They can direct you as to what the next best step is. Often your
vet will recommend you to walk your horse until they arrive. It also may be helpful to take your horse’s vital signs - including their heart rate, respiration rate, and temperature. The best way to take your horse’s temperature is rectally. Respiration rate can be taken by measuring your horse’s breaths per minute. Heart rate can be taken by measuring your horse’s pulse - best felt under the horse’s jaw.
Once your vet arrives, he or she may administer pain medication and a sedative. They will often perform a rectal examination to feel for any impactions or other abnormalities. The vet will also often pass a nasogastric tube through your horse’s nose into their stomach to check for feed build up, which can help determine the severity of the colic.
Depending on the exam findings, your vet may recommend various treatments such as intravenous fluids for hydration, continued
Dr. Allie grew up in Hidden Hills as an avid equestrian. She went on to receive her veterinary degree from University of California, Davis in 2017. She now practices as a mobile house call veterinarian seeing her patients, large and small, in the comfort of their own homes. drtashnek.com
pain medication, or referral to an in-patient hospital for monitoring and possible surgery.
Keeping your horse hydrated is an important step in preventing colic. Making sure they have continuous access to clean, fresh, cool water is crucial. Electrolytes can encourage your horse to drink more water. Bran mashes are another great way to help increase your horse’s water intake. Another tip is to keep their diet consistent. Make sure you make any feed changes gradually, to allow their system to adjust to the change. Exercise is also important! The motility of a horse’s gastrointestinal tract increases with exercise. Even just regularly walking or turning out your horse is helpful in keeping his or her gastrointestinal tract moving! Make sure to monitor your horse daily for any changes in behavior that could indicate he isn’t feeling well, especially during any drastic changes in weather. When in doubt, contact your veterinarian! HH

WITH COYOTES
Written by Gracie Bellissimo
Maybe you’ve heard them in the dead of night, maybe you’ve seen them wandering on the trails, or maybe you’ve had an experience where they came too close for comfort. No matter what, we’re all aware of the presence of coyotes around Hidden Hills and beyond our gates.
As we have coexisted with these creatures for decades, what makes this year significantly different is that coyote attacks are on the rise all throughout California. Local authorities believe this is because of the severe drought we
have been experiencing since last year, causing coyotes to wander into more urban areas in search of food and water. While coyotes attacking humans is quite rare, the bay area saw several coyote attacks in which hikers were bitten by more aggressive coyotes. Although these animals are usually skittish, professionals believe the specific coyotes causing these attacks felt comfortable biting humans because of food or water being left outside for the animals. Whether it was directly meant for them, or simply because humans were feeding their pets outside, it was enough to push them to these extreme measures. Several trails were closed

for weeks because of the rise in coyote attacks, until the coyotes causing these recurring attacks were caught and euthanized.
As for Hidden Hills, resident Terry Mandel recently and tragically witnessed two coyotes in her backyard drag away and kill her beloved dog of 13 years right in front of her eyes. Following the attack, Terry stressed that pet owners should “understand that coyotes are a part of life in Hidden Hills, and please watch your dogs like a hawk!” She went on to say how “whether they are small dogs or large ones, coyotes are capable of killing all sizes because of the strategies they use to lure them and attack.” Coyotes often work in teams and lure animals to their deaths by trapping them and then attacking all at once, so do your best to avoid letting your animals out at night and even during the day, where you should keep them close to you at all times.
Keeping coyotes from invading our lives is not impossible, in fact, there are plenty of factors to rule out in coyote prevention and, according to Los Angeles County Animal Services, killing is not the solution because if you reduce the population, those left have a better food source and produce larger and stronger litters.
Coyotes have a keen sense of smell and are opportunistic eaters, especially in more dire drought seasons such as now. In order to prevent coyotes from finding sanctuary in your yard, do not leave any pet food or water outside. Because coyotes are omnivores, they also take pleasure in eating fruit. Not only should you properly discard fruit remnants from your kitchen, it is just as important to not leave any rotting fruit under your fruit trees. Be sure to exclude meat from your compost pile, and keep it covered within a bin. HH
IMPORTANT TIPS TO REMEMBER
• Never leave pets outside and unattended, even during daylight hours.
• Avoid feeding pets outside or feed them during the day and remove all bowls when finished.
• Remove all food attractants from the yard, including fallen fruit.
• Keep lids on garbage cans and cover compost piles.
• Clean areas around bird feeders and store feed indoors.
• Clean outdoor grills to remove odors that might attract coyotes.
• House backyard chickens in secure and protected coops.
• Close up crawl spaces under porches and sheds to prevent wildlife access and denning.
• If you encounter a coyote, frighten it away with loud noises and making yourself look big. Never turn your back on the coyote and maintain eye contact. If this does not work, proceed to throw nearby items at it.

L’AUBERGE
written by Elyse Glickman
Del Mar has more than its panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and location just north of San Diego going for it. Hollywood legends Lucy and Desi Arnaz, Jimmy Durante and Bing Crosby (who founded the Del Mar Fairgr]ounds and Racetrack with Oat O’Brien) thought so, too, as they frequented The Stratford Inn, a destination for people who wanted the best of San Diego County at their feet. During World War II, the there was plenty of room at this inn for servicemen and their families during the Christmas holidays.
Seeing the potential of a new resort blending the charm of the Stratford Inn in its heyday with modern amenities, a spa and contemporary dining, local resident Jim Watkins purchased the property, rebuilt the hotel and opened it anew as the L’Auberge Del Mar in 1989. While its destination status is now firmly in place, and the site’s legacy still captures the imagination of history buffs and cinephiles, the management has continued efforts to keep L’Auberge Del Mar relevant and fresh. Most recently, a $10.5 million dollar renovation was wrapped, resulting in

The public spaces as well as the inn’s 114 rooms and seven suites reflect Del Mar’s continuing appeal into the 21st century with a blend of traditional
and contemporary furniture, finishes, materials and fabric against a backdrop of rich earth tones and neutrals. The “Living Room, a popular hangout for guests and locals, remains intact to emphasize L’Auberge’s enduring sense of place. The open lobby plan and pool deck, meanwhile, are aesthetically aligned and
landscaped to almost erase the lines between indoors and the outdoors.
