Spring Entryway Inspiration

Michelle Gracie is one of LA’s top producing agents of The Beverly Hills Estates, and CEO of The Turnkey Concierge, a home production services company serving LA’s luxury market and celebrity clientele. She wants you to spring into the listing season with her Top 5 Tips on how to make your entryway enchanting.

Everyone talks about the importance of curb appeal, however, Michelle wants to take a deeper dive into the Turnkey Entryway. “I cant stress enough that the walk up to your front door for a potential buyer will leave an everlasting first impression that will be compounded when the buyer stands outside reflecting back on the property, potentially discussing writing an offer with their realtor,” says Michelle. “So your home’s first impression will double down as a lasting one.”

Whether you’re getting ready to put your home on the market for sale or not make sure you give your entry the refresh it deserves for spring tidings. Welcome friends and family to gatherings after you use Michelle‘s 5 step refresh.

1st Restore the Door - The Face of your Door is the portal to your entryway. Start by applyng a fresh stain or coat of paint adding vibrance as you cross the threshold.

2nd Revitalize Lighting - Replace outdoor bulbs that need assistance. Lacking in lighting? Easy fix pop in LED Solar Pathway Lights which will light up the walkway leading up to your door.

3rd Redesign Garden Pots - Michelle’s favorite garden pot combo is either two large pots on each side of the door or stacking 3 pots varying in sizes large, medium or small on each side of the doorway. Both choices will add beautiful symmetry and frame your welcoming portal. When choosing what to put in your garden pots, according to Michelle, “Color evokes Emotion”. She suggests one of two winning color combos. Lush shades of green and white for a prosperous organic vibe or what she refers to as “The SoCal Feels”. A combination of purples, pinks & white for a romantic and whimsical essence. After you know your color combo start planting with “Tall Thrillers” to give your pot height and drama. Next add “Filler”, a medium sized plant, for fullness. Lastly, and Michelle’s favorite, place a “Spiller” to texturize & cascade over your perfect pots. Michelle states “Layering plants thoughtfully will elevate the look of your garden pots”.

4th Recreate Betterment BasketsEven with a proper mudroom, someone is bound to pop by and leave everyday items near your main entrance. Place 2 beautiful oversized baskets just inside your foyer. This way you and your guests will have a designated place for things such as shoes, soccer balls, dog leashes, book bags, etc.

5th Renew Entrance Mat - Last but not least, don’t forget to throw away & replace that old doormat. It’s been walked all over and seen better days. This little detail will make a cosmic-sized difference at first glance.

TENNIS LIVEBALL TOURNEY HITS THE COURTS

There was an awesome turnout at the Racket Nut sponsored Tennis Liveball Tournament that took place on all four Long Valley Tennis Courts. Liveball is a fast-paced doubles-style king-of-thecourt tennis game. The sport has been described as tennis crossed with an aerobics class and is typically played with 5-8 players on a court including numerous rotations, partner pairings, plus lots of stamina and focus in each basket to be successful. Most tournaments require days of your time, not knowing when you’re going to actually play, and travel time to the location. Even though it

was a full day for the 32 competitors playing liveball, including the on-court Qualifying Rounds and Championship Basket, there was a winner in 3 hours with tennis professional Ransom Braaten’s new format. The players enjoyed Mexican cuisine served by the Five Elementos food truck while they waited to hear the results that Hidden Hills’ own Michael Bloom and his partner Loren Gesas triumphed!

HOLLYWOOD HISTORY ADJACENT

If your home in Hidden Hills should happen to have a view of the rolling hills just south of our community, there is a chance the vista you behold was once most notable for its apearances on the silver screen. From 1935 to 1961 the Warner Motion Picture Ranch was one of the largest Hollywood film lots with a roster of iconic movies shot there such as Casablanca (1943) and Sergeant York (1941). Located just south of the 101 freeway near Parkway Calabasas, many early Hidden Hills residents carry a special connection to this ranch. But the Warner Brothers who founded the motion picture ranch had a lot to do before voyaging to the west coast of California.

Around the 1890’s, Harry, Sam, Albert and Jack Warner were born in London, Ontario. Soon the family moved from Canada down to the United States, settling in Youngstown,

Ohio. At the turn of the 20th century the brothers worked together in their teen years touring areas throughout Ohio and Pennsylvania making money by showing films to miners in rented halls with an early prototype of the projector called the Kinetoscope. From this, the Warner Brothers generated enough funds to open their very own nickelodeon (a small movie theater with a nickel fee) in New Castle, Pennsylvania called the Cascade Theatre.

In 1925, the business savvy Warner brothers launched the first radio station in Los Angeles called KFWB, with the primary purpose of promoting their new film company, quite fittingly named, Warner Bros films. In the following year Warner Bros. films produced Don Juan, the first full length feature film. Then after a financial setback in the 1930’s from the Great Depression, Warner Bros. films continued persevering

and reached notable success when they began producing patriotic films such as You’re in the Army Now (1941),Yankee Doodle Dandy (1943), and Casablanca (1943). Portions of these movies were filmed on their 2,800 acre Calabasas ranch called the “Warner Motion Picture Ranch.”

A 500-acre portion of the land was initially purchased in 1935 when Jack Warner was immediately stricken by the cinematic potential of the Calabasas land. Along with the consistent ideal weather of Southern California, Jack just kept expanding his acreage. Harry Warner found the land so picturesque that he built a home on the property and began to raise Thoroughbred horses there.

The unique rugged landscape of the Warner Motion Picture Ranch is most recognizable in innumerable westerns such as the Santa Fe Trail (1940), Virginia City (1940) and

22 The Hidden Hills Register & Resource Guide | April 2022

Pursued (1947). These movies used the many detailed outdoor sets built on the ranch modeled after western ghost towns, saloons, and prairie homes.

For children growing up in Hidden Hills in the 1950’s, the Warner Motion Picture Ranch served as a land of adventure. Just down the road from the Long Valley Gate, young residents of Hidden Hills would reach the ranch by walking through a tunnel found at the Boething Treeland Nursery that headed underneath the 101 Highway (now the 101 Freeway) to arrive at Calabasas Road adjacent to the ranch.

The Hidden Hills kids notoriously would sneak onto the outdoor filming lots and play pretend as if they were cowboys within the silver screens of their favorite western movies. Thomas Cleaveland remembers that there was always a thrill to playing on the ranch because the Warner Bros. Studio hired a patrol man to specifically watch for kids who were always sneaking in around the clock. Thomas said that all the kids had their own fearsome tall tales about what would happen if they got caught and

that “we would have fun spending our days together hiding from the patrol.” He also remarked that, “All of us kids had our own way of getting in, one way or another. Our goal was always to get up to the western prop house, but unfortunately to get to our destination, there weren’t too many hiding places. So, we’d get caught, driven back to the front of the ranch gate and told to go home.” But with a laugh Thomas said, “It was still fun to try!”

Today the land where the Warner Motion Picture Ranch once resided is currently the planned development of Calabasas Park. But the indelible impact the Warner Brothers had on the film industry and Southern Californian history remains to this day.

Preserved in the minds of not only movie goers but also through the unique memories carried by early Hidden Hills residents who spent their childhoods exploring the Warner Motion Picture Ranch. HH

KEEPING THE COMMUNITY SAFE & CLEAN

In an ongoing effort to keep the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) properly trained in emergency functions, Hidden Hills Emergency Services Coordinator Michael Woodard invited County of Los Angeles Fire Department Assistant Chief Drew Smith, Captain Larry Muno, and Community Services Liaison Megan Currier to provide an overview of hazardous waste materials that pose threats to clean and safe homes and communities.

Hazardous waste is defined as having properties that make it dangerous or capable of having a harmful effect on human health or the environment. The universe of hazardous waste is large and diverse and can be generated from many sources, ranging from industrial & medical to everyday products such as batteries and household chemicals. It comes in many volatile forms, including liquids, solids, gasses, and sludges and can be corrosive, inflammable, explosive, or react when exposed to other materials. It can be the by-product of manufacturing processes, discarded used materials, or discarded unused commercial products, such as cleaning fluids (solvents) or pesticides. Previously unregulated commercial transportation of items caused the majority of danger; now your home is most vulnerable as it is full of hazardous materials.

Many products handled regularly such as paint, cleaners,

glues, soaps, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals are toxic if used improperly, carelessly, or in a manner not intended. In addition, Hidden Hills has the unique situation of manure combustibility as the same heat that builds in a manure pile to kill harmful bacteria can also erupt into fire with improper storage. Many people are hospitalized after the improper combining of everyday household products which should never be mixed because they react to produce toxic compounds with undesirable consequences. Through the simple act of putting these materials into your trash can, garbage collectors, the environment and our drinking water are endangered. California promotes the proper disposal and recycling of products that have reached the end of their useful life by making it illegal to dispose of household hazardous waste in the trash, down the drain, or by abandonment.

The County of Los Angeles Fire Department has three hazardous materials task forces composed of ten or more individuals, in addition to having six local hazardous materials specialists to address issues in case a regional event occurs. In addition to initiating a new software program to reach CERT members directly, Megan Currier is responsible for notifying incident commanders of actual and potential releases of hazardous substances that could impact our area so that teams can be utilized in their communities.

If activated in local emergencies, CERT members serve as public liaisons and directly engage with residents and help reduce the risk of injury. Monthly continuing education classes and drills teach individuals how to prepare for, keep safe during, and respond to fires, floods, earthquakes, search and rescue, terrorist attacks, command postings, and household hazardous material events that can transition from simple to complex assignments. This is the process by which “the right workforce for the right job” is developed for unpredictable incidents that require organization and accountability.

Be prepared at home by learning what disasters and hazards could affect your area, sign up for emergency alerts, and agree where you would go if you and your family need to evacuate. Make sure your family has a plan and practice it often. Local fire codes require chemicals be stored outside at least 30 feet from the home in wellventilated areas since natural and chemical mixtures very commonly & unintentionally injure animals and humans. Sign up online to receive emergency notifications from the City of Hidden Hills at ww.hiddenhills.bbcportal.com HH

A VISUAL GUIDE SNAKES HIDDEN HILLS

SOME ARE TINY, SOME ARE SHINY. ONLY ONE IS POTENTIALLY DEADLY. LIKE IT OR NOT, WE LIVE IN AN AREA WHERE SNAKES ARE DIVERSE AND PLENTIFUL.

HERE IS A GUIDE TO HELP YOU IDENTIFY AND RESPECT YOUR SCALY NEIGHBORS

PICTURED HERE, A COAST PATCHNOSED SNAKE, P.30 INFORMATION COURTESY OF CALIFORNIAHERPS.COM

CALIFORNIA GOPHER SNAKE

Not Dangerous (Non-poisonous)

Harmless and beneficial gophersnakes are sometimes mistaken for dangerous rattlesnakes. Gophersnakes are often killed unnecessarily because of this confusion. (It’s also not necessary to kill every rattlesnake.) Here’s how to tell them apart, but if you aren’t sure, keep your distance!

Rattlesnake – triangular head, larger than neck; thick, dull, non-glossy body; tail is blunt with one or more rattles. Gopher Snake – head slightly larger than neck; slender, glossy body; pointed tail.

A Gopher Snake makes a similar sound to a rattlesnake by hissing and rapidly moving its tail in dry grass.

LENGTH: Adults of the species can be 2.5 - 9 feet long. Hatchlings are fairly long, generally around 15 inches in length.

APPEARANCE: A large snake with heavily keeled scales, a narrow head that is slightly wider than the neck, and a protruding rostral scale on the tip of the snout that is bluntly rounded. Ground color is tan, light brown or yellowish, with large brown or blackish rounded blotches along the back and smaller markings on the sides. The dorsal blotches can fuse together producing a very dark color. The underside is cream to yellow with dark spots. The back of the neck is often a dull orange. There is usually a dark stripe across the head in front of the eyes and a dark stripe from behind each eye to the angle of the jaw. Juveniles tend to have

a darker and more compact pattern than adults.

ACTIVITY: Active in the daytime, and at night in hot weather, and especially at dusk and dawn. One of the most commonly seen snakes on roads and trails, especially in the spring when males are actively seeking a mate, and in the fall when hatchlings emerge. A good burrower, climber, and swimmer.

DEFENSE: When threatened, a gophersnake will do several things, sometimes one after the other, including: crawling away quickly to escape or hide; freezing upmaking the body rigid and kinked up so it won’t be noticed or perceived as a snake; and striking at the threat to scare it off. Gophersnakes also use a more dramatic defensive behavior - sometimes a snake will elevate its body and inflate it with air while flattening its head into a triangular shape, hissing loudly, and quickly shaking its tail back and forth to make a buzzing sound. This head-flattening and tail-rattling is usually considered to be a mimic of a rattlesnake, but the tail shaking could be a behavior similar to that of the rattlesnake that helps to warn off an animal that could be a threat to the snake by alerting it of the snake’s presence. Gophersnakes have a specially-developed epiglottis (the flap at the back of the throat) which increases the sound of their hiss when air is forced through.

DIET AND FEEDING: Eats mostly gophers, moles, rabbits, and mice, along with birds and their eggs and nestlings. Occasionally eats lizards and insects.

LOOKS LIKE A RATTLESNAKE

CALIFORNIA GLOSSY SNAKE

Not Dangerous (Non-poisonous)

to humans. Handle this snake with caution, as some people have had unpleasant reactions to this snake’s bite, especially when the snake is allowed to chew, which helps to put more venom into the skin. Symptoms can include local swelling, redness, itching, and numbness, but the effects are not systemic.

LENGTH: Most lyresnakes encountered are 24 - 36 inches long.

APPEARANCE: A slender snake with a broad head welldifferentiated from the slim neck. The pupils are vertical, like those of a cat. Coloring closely matches a snake’s rocky habitat, from gray to light brown. There are usually about 35 dorsal blotches with light edges and a pale crossbar in the center, and smaller irregular blotches on the lower sides. A lyre-shaped marking is present on top of the head. The underside is off-white or yellowish with dark spots.

LENGTH: Adults are 26-70 inches in length. Average length is 3 - 4 feet.

APPEARANCE: A medium-sized muscular snake with smooth, glossy scales, a faded or bleached-out appearance, and a short tail. A tan or light brown ground color with dark brown blotches with dark edges on the back and sides and a pale, unmarked underside.

ACTIVITY: Nocturnal. Hides underground in daytime under rocks, in existing burrows, or uses its specialized nose to make its own burrow. Typically active from late February until November, depending on the weather. Most active in May. Less active during Summer.

DIET AND FEEDING: Preys mostly on sleeping diurnal (active during day) lizards, but also eats small snakes, terrestrial birds, and nocturnally-active mammals.

CALIFORNIA LYRESNAKE

Mildly Venomous - but not considered dangerous to humans.

ACTIVITY: Nocturnal, active in very dry conditions as well as during rains. Terrestrial, and good climbers. This snake often searches rock crevices for prey. It can be found during the day inside crevices in large rock outcrops, as well as crossing desert roads at night.

DEFENSE: When threatened, a lyresnake will sometimes vibrate its tail similar to the behavior of a rattlesnake. Sometimes it will raise up the front of its body and strike.

DIET AND FEEDING: Primarily lizards, but also known to eat small mammals, nestling birds, and snakes.

SAN DIEGO NIGHTSNAKE

Mildly Venomous - but not considered dangerous to humans.

LENGTH: Most seen are 8 - 12 inches long, rarely over 16 inches. Hatchlings are about 7 inches in length.

Capable of delivering a mild venom from small fangs in the rear of the mouth, but the venom is not considered dangerous

Color varies, often matching the substrate, from light gray, light brown, beige, to tan or cream, with dark brown or gray blotches on the back and sides. Usually a pair of large dark blotches on the neck and a dark bar through or behind the eyes. Whitish or yellowish and unmarked underneath.

ACTIVITY: Nocturnal, and also active at dusk and dawn. Can be found under rocks, boards, logs, and other surface objects. Sometimes seen crossing roads on warm nights.

DIET AND FEEDING: Eats a wide range of terrestrial vertebrates, mostly lizards and their eggs, sometimes small snakes, frogs, and salamanders.

CALIFORNIA STRIPED RACER

Not Dangerous (Non-poisonous)

CALIFORNIA KINGSNAKE

Not Dangerous (Non-poisonous)

LENGTH: Adults are generally 30 - 48 inches long occasionally reaching 60 inches. Hatchlings are about 13 inches long.

APPEARANCE: A long fast-moving snake with a thin body and a long thin tail, large eyes, a broad elongated head, a slender neck, and smooth scales. Dark olive brown, gray, or black ground coloring with a pale yellow or cream colored solid stripe on each side which extends from the back of the eye to or beyond the vent. The stripes are relatively narrow. The underside is cream or pale yellow tapering to pink toward the tail.

ACTIVITY: Diurnal, often seen actively foraging in the daytime with head and forward part of the body held high up off the ground searching for prey with its acute vision. Climbs vegetation and seeks shelter in burrows, rocks, or woody debris. Very fast-moving and alert, quickly fleeing when threatened, this snake can be difficult to get close to.

DIET AND FEEDING: Eats lizards (particularly spiny lizards), small rodents, small birds, frogs, salamanders, small snakes. Juveniles will consume large insects.

LENGTH: California Kingsnakes seldom exceed 48 inches. Most commonly found at 2.5 - 3.5 feet in length. Hatchlings are about 12 inches long.

APPEARANCE: Smooth, shiny, unkeeled scales. The head is barely wider than the neck. Highly variable in appearance. Most commonly seen with alternating bands of black or brown and white or light yellow, including the underside, where the light bands become wider.

ACTIVITY: Active during daylight in cooler weather and at night, dawn, and dusk when temperatures are high.

DEFENSE: When disturbed, generally not aggressive, but sometimes vibrates the tail quickly, hisses, and rolls into a ball, hiding the head and showing the vent with it’s lining exposed.

DIET AND FEEDING: Eats a wide variety of prey, including rodents and other small mammals, lizards, lizard eggs, snakes (including rattlesnakes), snake eggs, turtle eggs and hatchlings, frogs, salamanders, birds, bird eggs and chicks, and large invertebrates. A powerful constrictor, coiling tightly around its prey.

COAST MOUNTAIN KINGSNAKE

Not Dangerous (Non-poisonous)

April 2022 | The Hidden Hills Register & Resource Guide 33

DEFINITELY NOT A RATTLESNAKE

There are no venomous snakes in California that can be mistaken for this snake, but the similar-looking Arizona Coral Snake, found in Arizona, is venomous and dangerous.

LENGTH: 20 - 50 inches long.

APPEARANCE: A medium-sized slender snake with a head not much wider than the cylindrical body with smooth shiny scales. Black, red, and off-white or grayish-white rings circle the body. The red bands are noticeably wider than the others, with the white bands wider than the black. Some black bands may widen and cross over the red bands on the back, especially in populations in the Santa Monica Mountains. Typically, 60 percent or more of the triads have complete red bands with no black crossovers. The bands continue around the belly, but the coloring is paler, and the black and white bands are reduced in size giving the belly a reddish coloring. The nose is black sometimes with some red.

ACTIVITY: Secretive, but not rare in suitable habitat. Spends most of the time underground, under surface objects, or inside rock crevices. Occasionally seen active on the ground in the daytime, especially near shaded streams on hot sunny days. Active during the day at high altitudes during times of low nighttime temperatures (which is typical habitat.) When temperatures are more moderate, it can be crepuscular, nocturnal, and diurnal. During very hot weather, activity is primarily nocturnal. This snake is normally active at temperatures between approximately 55 - 85 degrees.

DIET AND FEEDING: Eats lizards, small mammals, nestling birds, bird eggs, amphibians, and occasionally snakes, including its own species.

CALIFORNIA RED-SIDED GARTERSNAKE

Not Dangerous (Non-poisonous)

wider than the neck and keeled dorsal scales. The eyes are relatively large compared with other gartersnake species. Ground color is dark olive to black. The dorsal stripe is wide and well-defined, and yellowish to bluish in color. Light stripes along the lower sides are not very distinct, often blending in with the color of the belly. There are red bars alternating with the ground color along the sides above the lateral stripes. The head is red or orangeish. The underside is bluish gray, sometimes with dark markings.

ACTIVITY: Primarily active during daylight. A good swimmer.

DEFENSE: Often escapes into water when threatened. When first handled, typical of gartersnakes, this snake often releases cloacal contents and musk, and strikes.

DIET AND FEEDING: Eats a wide variety of prey, including frogs and newts and their larvae, fish, birds, and their eggs, small mammals, reptiles, earthworms, slugs, and leeches.

COAST PATCHNOSED SNAKE

(Pictured on page 11)

Not Dangerous (Non-poisonous)

Gartersnakes have toxins in their saliva which can be deadly to their prey and their bite might produce an unpleasant reaction in humans, but they are not considered dangerous to humans.

LENGTH: Adults of this species measure 18 - 55 inches in length, but the average size is under 36 inches.

APPEARANCE: A medium-sized snake with a head barely

LENGTH: Most snakes seen are 26 - 36 inches in length.

APPEARANCE: A fast, moderately-sized slender striped snake with smooth scales, large eyes, and a large scale over the tip of the snout. Well-camouflaged, this snake is gray to brown with dark brown sides (without any light stripes) and a broad yellow or tan stripe down the middle of the back (which is narrower than the stripe found on other subspecies of patchnosed snakes). The underside is cream colored, sometimes shading to pale orange at the tail end. The sides may be dark on all but the lowermost 1 or 2 scale rows. The top of the head is brown. The width of the pale middorsal stripe is usually 1 full scale bordered by 2 half scales.

DEFINITELY NOT A RATTLESNAKE

(CONTINUED FROM PAGE 30)

ACTIVITY: Diurnal - active during daylight, even in times of extreme heat. Terrestrial, but also climbs shrubs in pursuit of prey. Burrows into loose soil. Able to move very quickly. Acute vision allows this snake to escape quickly when threatened, making it sometimes difficult to observe or capture during the heat of the day. Enlarged back teeth might be used to envenomate prey. The enlarged rostral scale (on the tip of the nose) is thought to be useful in excavating buried lizard eggs. It may also be used to dig into underground burrows.

DEFENSE: When cornered, will inflate the body and strike.

DIET AND FEEDING: Eats mostly lizards, especially whiptails, along with small mammals, and possibly small snakes, nestling birds, reptile eggs, and amphibians.

SAN BERNARDINO RING-NECKED SNAKE

Not Dangerous (Non-poisonous)

RED COACHWHIP SNAKE

Not Dangerous (Non-poisonous)

LENGTH: The typical total length of an adult ring-necked snake is about 11 - 16 inches.

APPEARANCE: A small, thin snake with smooth scales. Gray, blue-gray, blackish, or dark olive dorsal coloring, with a bright orange to reddish underside, speckled with black markings. The underside of the tail is a bright reddish orange. A narrow orange band around the neck, 1-2 scale rows wide.

ACTIVITY: Secretive - usually found under the cover of rocks, wood, bark, boards and other surface debris, but occasionally seen moving on the surface on cloudy days, at dusk, or at night.

DEFENSE: When disturbed, coils its tail like a corkscrew, exposing the underside which is usually bright red. It may also smear musk and cloacal contents.

DIET AND FEEDING: Eats slender salamanders and other small salamanders, tadpoles, small frogs, small snakes, lizards, worms, slugs, and insects.

LENGTH: Adults are 36 - 66 inches long. The only longer snake in California is the Gophersnake.

APPEARANCE: A slender fast-moving snake with smooth scales, a large head and eyes, a thin neck, and a long thin tail. (There is no well-defined stripe lengthwise on the body in this species.) The braided appearance of scales on the tail (like a whip) gives this species its common name. Color is variable; light brown, pink or reddish above. The dark coloring is interspersed with light coloring creating a banded or saddled appearance, with dark coloring surrounding the light scales. Dark (often black) blotches across the top of the neck, sometimes with white, sometimes with body color, in between. (Sometimes the neck and much of the head are solid black.) Color typically changes to a solid tan or reddish coloring along the length of the long thin tail.

ACTIVITY: Active in the daytime. Able to tolerate high temperatures. Moves very quickly. Emerges from winter site relatively late (April - May) due to the species preference for warm temperatures. Coachwhips are good climbers, able to climb bushes and trees. Often seen moving quickly even on hot sunny days, but often seen basking on roads in early morning or resting underneath boards or other surface objects. Frequently run over by vehicles and found dead on the road, partly due to the tendency of this snake to stop and eat small road-killed animals.

DEFENSE: Often strikes aggressively when threatened or handled.

DIET AND FEEDING: Eats small mammals including bats, nestling and adult birds, bird eggs, lizards, snakes, amphibians, and carrion. Hatchlings and juveniles will eat large invertebrates.

RATTLESNAKE!

Rattlesnakes are important members of the natural community. They will not attack, but if disturbed or cornered, they will defend themselves. Reasonable watchfulness should be sufficient to avoid snakebite. Give them distance and respect. “Rattlesnakes are also among the most reasonable forms of dangerous wildlife: their first

SOUTHERN PACIFIC RATTLESNAKE

Dangerously Venomous

LENGTH: Adults 30 - 44 inches long, sometimes up to 54 inches. Newborns about 10 inches long.

APPEARANCE: A heavy-bodied pit viper, with a thin neck, a large triangular head, and a rattle on the end of the tail consisting of loose interlocking hollow segments. A new rattle segment is added each time the skin is shed, which can be more than one time per year. Pupils are elliptical. Scales are keeled. Young are born with a bright yellow tail with no rattle - just a single button which does not make a sound. They grow rattles and lose the yellow color as they age. The pattern is brighter on juveniles than on adults.

ACTIVITY: Primarily nocturnal and crepuscular during periods of excessive daytime heat, but also active during daylight when the temperature is more moderate. Not active during cooler periods in Winter.

line of defense is to remain motionless; if you surprise them or cut off their retreat, they offer an audio warning; if you get too close, they head for cover. Venom is intended for prey so they’re reluctant to bite, and 25 to 50 percent of all bites are dry - no venom is injected.”

DIET AND FEEDING: Eats birds, lizards, snakes, frogs, insects, and small mammals, including mice, rats, rabbits, hares, and ground squirrels. (Adult California Ground Squirrels are immune to rattlesnake venom and will intensely confront any snake they feel to be a threat.)

Prey is found while the snake is actively moving, or by ambush, where the snake waits near lizard or rodent trails, striking at and releasing passing prey. The snake then follows the trail of the envenomated animal and swallows it whole.

They use their natural camouflage to hunt by sitting still, without rattling, trying to remain invisible as they wait for a warm-blooded prey animal to pass close enough to strike. Rattlesnakes are often portrayed with the body partly coiled, the tail rattling loudly, and the head raised up and ready to strike, but they do not need to coil up this way to strike and bite. This display is a warning not to come any closer. It’s a defensive behavior that some rattlesnakes use when they sense that crawling away would put them in danger of attack.

RESIDENTS SHARE THEIR FAVORITES

Equestrian communities offer horse lovers a variety of facilities in rural settings. There is a recent interest in housing developments that reflect a lifestyle built around horses. However for Sarah Phillips the passion for the equestrian lifestyle manifested at ten years old when after two years of persistent begging, she finally got her parents to agree to purchase her first horse. Thus began her lifelong dedication to horses, including riding on the Equestrian Team in College doing hunter jumpers, and learning dressage when she moved to California in 2008.

The Phillips Family moved to Hidden Hills on Fiesta weekend in 2016 from Topanga Canyon.

Currently their household is happily full with two daughters, Sophia (9), and Abigail (7), her husband Stephen; three horses Evan, Monty, and Smokey; two dogs Lemon and Pinky; and their cat named Rainbow. Sarah is a professional mother in addition to being a Family Nurse Practitioner. She works in a federally qualified health center that provides healthcare for underserved communities.

Sarah’s passion about her family and animals influenced her to join the Equestrian Services Committee in 2014. She recently became the ESC Chairperson in order to continue promoting safe and hazard free

conditions for equine enthusiasts of all ages and abilities. Everyone in the Phillips family enjoys a trail ride among the flourishing spaces where they can freely ride their horses.

One of Sarah’s favorite trail rides loops runs parallel to Jim Bridger Road. Residents can enter the “Valley Trail” from an opening found behind 5303 Round Meadow Road and next to 5337 Jed Smith South Road. This less than two mile loop provides a shady wide path perfect for all levels of riders or pedestrians with several exits and is mostly flat with a 10% - 30% grade. Follow the path until Round Meadow Elementary is reached, and stay right to find a trail that takes you through a beautiful valley, meandering along a shady path with an active creek flowing thanks to the recent rains. The trail ends across from 25035 Ashley Ridge Road. After continuing right, one is able to travel along Jim Bridger Road for a bit with the option of returning back onto the trail system between 24929 and 24901 Jim Bridger Road. If the trail

is followed down, and a right is taken where it splits, residents will end up back at the bottom of Jim Bridger Road where it meets Jed Smith South Road. HH

TWO HOURS FROM PARADISE

The Bellanca Hotel, Avalon, Catalina

Even when circumstances limit travel, we Southern Californians are blessed with a treasure trove of internationally popular vacation destinations right in our backyard. So much so that it is easy to forget there are several island oases we can lay claim to. Catalina Island, accessible by ferry from both San Pedro and Newport Beach, is one worth

rediscovering as it retains its rustic charm, bike paths, hiking trails, beach, beach activities and maratime flavor that has drawn visitors for generations. The nostalgic at heart will still find plenty of surf-inspired bars, old school seafood restaurants and tee shirt shops dotting the streets of Avalon, its main town.

Catalina does not exist in a bubble, however, and the restaurant and hotel scenes have undergone subtle but marked changes that are adding a modern patina to appeal to increasingly well-travelled Californians with higher expectations. Case in point is the 19,800 square foot Bellanca Hotel (formerly The Portofino), which recently completed an extensive multi-million dollar

renovation that includes an open, airy bohochic aesthetic brought to life by San Diegobased Second Sight Design.

Ocean and aquamarine blues mingle with seafoam and kelp greens are inspired by Catalina Island’s natural assets and framed with black, white and timbor wood accents. Although the aesthetic and the hotel’s new name are described as “nautical” by the designers, it’s neither kitschy nor cliché, with use of hand molded tiles, custom art pieces, and blue tie-die flourishes, especially in its 40 rooms and suites. The remodeled guest-only rooftop, meanwhile, takes full advantage of the oceanfront scenery and sunsets with the addition of a glass railing, lighting, and Rooftop Lounge that brings a touch of a luxury cruise or yacht feel into the stay. Other lounge areas in the public spaces, indoors and outdoors, are home-y yet clean and contemporary.

In addition to the revitalized guest rooms and deluxe rooms, new luxury lodging options have been added, including four Cabana Style guestrooms and one-of-a-kind premium suites (Ocean View Studio and Luxury Ocean View Suite) that are outfitted with extras like fireplaces, soaking spa tubs, and ocean views. All rooms feature Serenity Beds with memory foam mattresses, luxe linen and down feather beds, hypoallergenic bedding (upon request), Turkish cotton bathrobes, luxury spa and bath products, Keurig coffee machines, iPhone dock alarm clocks, and a flat screen LCD TV.

ABOVE: Bellanca Hotel is centrally located at one of the most convenient locations in Avalon. It overlooks the gateway to the Via Casino, walking path to Descanso Beach to the east, and is at the end of Crescent Street, Avalon’s beachfront walk that bustles with restaurants, bars and shops.

At the Bellanca’s Naughty Fox, Chef Russell Hayden (who previously ran the kitchen at the buzzy Ace Hotel Palm Springs) adds breakfast and creates lunch and dinner menus with riffs on the beach bar formula by taking familiar coastal cuisine in new, global directions. Highlights include Korean Spicy Sauteed Calamari, Ahi Poke Nachos, a beer cheese-based mac and cheese, Gold Medal Ahi Chili (the winning recipe at the 2021 Avalon Rotary Club Foundation’s Chili Cook Off) and the chef’s signature Lobster BLT. Libations of note include the Chili Mango Margarita, Svelt Strawberry, Indecent Proposal (an update on the espresso martini) and a modern reinterpretation of Catalina Island’s famous “Buffalo Milk.” Other restaurants within walking distance among the guests, according to management, include The Chi Chi Club, Marlin Club and Luau Larry’s. In addition to its complimentary bike rentals, Bellanca Hotel recommends booking activities beyond the hotel with Catalina Tours (catalinatours.com), offering a variety of adventures that run the gamut from outdoor exploration (i.e. zip line and aerial eco tours, guided electric bike tours, parasailing, eco jeep tours, snorkeling, hiking) in and beyond Avalon to more creative activities such as (Catalina tile making). The island is also known for annual events such as the Taste Around Avalon Catalina Wine Mixer, JazzTrax, Descanso Beach Club entertainment, July 4th Parade, and Catalina Island Triathlon.

Rooms at the Bellanca Hotel begin at $149/night, with the prime Ocean View Studio available for about $369/night and Luxury Ocean View suite at $469. To make reservations, call 310) 5100555 or write reserve@bellancahotel. com. For more information on seasonal packages and amenities, visit bellancahotel.com. The famed Catalina Express, meanwhile, provides ferry access at San Pedro, Long Beach and Dana Point, but those who want to take their home-grown California island escape up a notch can spring for the Island Express Helicopter Ride, originating either in Long Beach or San Pedro.
