ultimate familyCloseness

WITH HIS WIFE AND CHILDREN AS HIS INSPIRATION, RETIRED FORMER UFC MIDDLE-WEIGHT CHAMPION CHUCK “THE ICEMAN” LIDDELL IS BETTER KNOWN AS “THE NICEMAN” IN HIS EVERYDAY LIFE.

As I stood at the solid door of Chuck and Heidi Liddell’s home, I had a moment of trepidation. A man whose nickname is “The Iceman” and who carries the title of former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion might raise anyone’s heart rate, let alone someone like me who stands five feet nothing and curls a whopping 10 pounds, on a good day. When the door

opened to reveal a precocious 4-year-old girl and her grinning 3-year-old brother, followed by their equally charming parents, my pulse rate eased. Retired MMA fighter, Chuck Liddell, is a powerful legend in the ring, but as I talk with him and Heidi in his child-friendly Hidden Hills home, I only see a caring husband and father.

We sit in a living room that would make any child happy. It is filled with their kids’ toys

and a large comfortable couch, which Charles, Jr. promptly falls head first off. Chuck picks him up, checks that previous stitches on his chin haven’t reopened and soothes him in a practiced manner. Guinevere, the pixiefaced 4-year-old going on 30, offers me Halloween candy with a sweet smile, and Heidi curls up on the couch surrounded by her family.

I ask Chuck if he misses fighting and he says that of course

16 Hidden Hills Magazine | Winter 2016/2017 Fall 2016

he does, but he relishes his new role as Executive Vice President of Business Development for the UFC, along with coaching The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America 3, and a host of other appearances and media involvement. Busy as he is, I see that his priority is his family. Heidi manages the business and the children travel everywhere with them. Guinevere has already traveled to 13 countries. Charles, Jr. had his first plane flight at one week old. Last week, Heidi and Chuck were in Vietnam and they took the kids to visit an orphanage to distribute toys and essential items. Heidi explains that she wants the children to see the entire world, not just the dressed up, comfortable world, so that they appreciate what they have as well as learn to give to others. The kids’ easy personalities and the amount of Halloween candy I came home with shows that the lessons are sticking.

The way Heidi and Chuck met could not have been scripted better, even by the fact that their meeting was an accident. Heidi was invited by a friend to the opening of a new Hollywood spot and Chuck was there with his entourage because he was in town and was looking for something to do that evening. He ended up next to Heidi and asked her if he could buy her a drink. She said no. Her friend kicked her and told her to have Chuck buy her a drink instead, so Heidi did and then tried to get her friend and Chuck together. He wasn’t interested. He followed Heidi around the rest of the night and asked her to go with him to another party. She said no, but through a few twists and turns, Chuck managed to get her to go out with him. They have now been married for six years, and the way

they are together, I can see them happily celebrating another 50 years of marriage.

Heidi worked diligently in high school as an academic and an athlete. She was a dancer, song leader and competed in track and field, and then entered USC at 17 years old. She earned a scholarship and got her degree from the USC Marshall School of Business with an emphasis in IT and a minor in Natural Sciences. Chuck was captain of his football and wrestling team in high school. He then went to Cal Poly where he was a Division I wrestler and earned his business/accounting degree. Their hard work and intense drive landed them exactly where they

wanted to be: together as a family, living in Hidden Hills.

They knew of Hidden Hills long before they moved into their home. Heidi first lived in Bell Canyon and the whole family then lived in Studio City. She wanted a place where their kids could play safely outside, go to nearby schools and live close to friends. Heidi’s first word to describe Hidden Hills, “Awesome.” Chuck echoes her statement. He says that it reminds him of his childhood where his grandparents told him he could play outside “until the lights go on.” They believe that Hidden Hills allows their kids a “wholesome childhood,” complete with an abundance of holiday

decorations and celebrations. They love the holidays in the community and cannot wait to drive the kids around to see the Christmas lights again this year. Hidden Hills is also close enough travel-wise for Chuck to get to work and back without having too much overnight business travel. This is important to him because he and Heidi both take the kids to school in the morning.

Chuck describes a perfect weekend day for him.“I get up and usually try to do something extra, like

make waffles or chocolate chip pancakes. I take my daughter to dance if she has make-ups from 9-10:30 and then come home ready to go for a family hike, go to the park, go to the mall or a [birthday] party. We like to do active stuff as a family. Then, we eat dinner at home (or out) and play games. Afterward, I either relax with Heidi and the kids or go out with Heidi for some fun around town. It is not always the easiest, but it is always worth it!”

The secret I discover is that outside

As someone who has dedicated her career to bringing buyers and sellers together I believe successful marketing is more than just about being online, it’s also about being there, in the community, engaging and understanding the needs and aspirations of the neighbors I represent. That’s why for over 15 years my team and I have consistently ranked as top producer, fulfilling dreams one at a time!

the ring, “The Iceman” is a gentle family man who embraces his family life. While I am there, his children sit close by telling him stories, reaching for a hug and then running to play outside. He smiles when they interrupt something he is saying, not at all bothered. As I am leaving, their daughter, Dannika, is dropped off from high school. As she walks in the door, she apologizes for being late and says, “The teacher was going over the test and the questions so I didn’t want to leave.” I ask Dannika what she likes about Hidden Hills and she says, “I like that it is very interactive. There are a lot of get-together events. Besides being safe, everyone is nice. I feel like I’m living in the peaceful countryside, with fun towns nearby.” It is obvious that the retired mixed martial artist/former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion and the USC scholar and dancer are doing a great job raising their children in Hidden Hills.

in the Southern California region are missing one of the best kept secrets and a true feast for the eyes.

Calamigos Ranch & Beach Club houses some of the most aweinspiring acreage Malibu has to offer, yet some are still unaware of the raw, natural beauty this estate possesses. The ranch includes the popular Malibu Café, a trendy and delicious dining experience, and also is home to the intimate Guest Ranch where all are welcome to stay and enjoy the luxuries the property supplies.

The Calamigos Guest Ranch,

specifically, is a rare, hidden gem, and for those who know of it can attest to its charming, effortless feel. The property is surrounded by luscious trees that chandeliers daintily hang upon, where the guest hotel itself is set upon the gorgeous grounds on which people automatically feel as though they’ve been transported to a place where time allows them to take a necessary life pause. With over 200 acres, Calamigos Ranch & Beach Club calls itself home to much of Malibu’s wildlife and strives to not only embrace the surrounding nature, but also to utilize its greatness in the activities and events featured on the property. Calamigos derives from a Chumash word meaning: “come as my brother, come as my friend.” The name of the ranch could not suit the ambiance and overall goal more because whether you are stepping foot outside the guest ranch, or headed to the lobby to begin your adventure, there is an overwhelming feeling of the kind of comfort anyone would resonate with as if they were home.

“We invite everyone to come as our brother and as our friend, we get to produce and be a part of some of the most important parts of people’s lives,” said CEO Garrett Gerson in regards to the ranch itself.

If you and your loved ones are feeling extra adventurous, there are on-site helicopter rides

available that take you along Southern California’s golden coast over Santa Monica and to the Hollywood sign, or even downtown for a champagne toast at sunset. There are three private pools on-site as well, which serves as a wonderful opportunity to gain some vitamin D while catching up on all of the reading you may have missed, or even a free beach shuttle to utilize during your visit.

At Calamigos, along with the Guest Ranch area, any event can be planned and executed flawlessly. If a local or corporate company is scouting out the perfect location for a work retreat, or even a conference event, Calamigos can provide a wonderful setting for team

building and bonding. In addition, the Guest Ranch is an impeccable venue for celebrating life’s greatest milestones, such as weddings, graduation parties, or even birthday festivities.

“If you can dream it, we can produce it,” said Gerson.

The Guest Ranch also offers guests who stay a chance to reconnect with the earth through organic farming and cooking classes where they take the fruits and vegetables harvested on the land and incorporate them into classic dishes which makes for an enjoyable time for family, friends, and loved ones. Guest cottages range from $490 for a private cottage to $990 per night for a two bedroom suite bungalow. The

Guest Ranch property also features a pizza garden where guests can overlook the gardens while enjoying homemade, freshly fired pizzas.

“When everything gets so advanced, you get so far removed from human interaction and engrossed in social media, there’s a point when you say you want to reach your hand in the dirt,” said Gerson, “there is something very grounding about reaching your hand in the dirt; my grandpa always taught us that you can never get so far away, at some point you need to ground yourself and respect the earth.”

Calamigos Guest Ranch also offers a type of intellectual yoga to their guests known as Vedanta that allows

each individual to explore their innerself with the goal of tapping into more awareness in the intellect, in addition to leading them to live out a fuller, more present life, which guests acknowledge as an invaluable feature. Amongst these incredible amenities includes a spa where guests can book some time for relaxation and much needed wind-down. The hotel also provides guests with the option to bring their beloved dogs with them on vacation if they so choose, which is an appealing aspect for those who travel often.

The property itself was purchased by Gerson’s grandparents in 1947, with the goal in mind being a hidden destination spot for all to appreciate, which has never changed. It is undeniably evident that the property has served the community in such ways since its opening. The entire Guest Ranch contains many personal elements that reflect the family aura Calamigos employs. The attention to detail, such as the wallpaper that is pasted in the lobby is inspired by Gerson’s grandmother, co-founder of the estate, since she was an artist. Even the cafe originated from her vision, when she opened a restaurant on the property in its early stages of development.

Calamigos Guest Ranch works diligently to incorporate the progressive methods of a green initiative since respect for the earth is a top priority for the Calamigos family. Each room is maintained with high quality, chemical-free cleaning products to reinforce the earth-friendly ideals Calamigos holds dear. The decor also infuses elements of raw, unfinished wood accents that brilliantly contrast with a more modern, rustic setting, which inspires each person to feel right at home.

Calamigos Guest Ranch may not have previously appeared on your radar, but it is a destination that deserves to be at the top of your list on where to venture to next, the ranch eagerly awaits your arrival.

“Our motto is: Saving lives, one smile at a time. On a good day we can help make someone healthy, on a great day, we save a life.”
DR. BRUCE BEARD

Our mouths taste the food we consume, convey the words our minds cannot, and aid in expressing emotion our faces sometimes are unable to. The mouth is also the gateway to the body, which is why it is absolutely necessary to seek out someone to properly care for it. Dr. Bruce Beard and Dr. Manny Fernandez are dentists who genuinely care about the total health and well-being of each individual patient, and go to great lengths to ensure patients are healthy in all aspects affected by oral health.

Dr. Fernandez and Dr. Beard have been practicing together from their Woodland Hills office for close to 30 years. Both doctors are proud graduates of the USC School of Dentistry, which has put them at the forefront of “Complete Health Dentistry,” a very important national movement focusing on the oral-systemic connection.

According to Dr. Manny Fernandez, “We recognize the inflammatory burden that bacteria from the mouth can place on the rest of the body as well as the importance of jaw alignment and the role that it can play in headaches, TMJ and Sleep Apnea. So we like to work in partnership with our patient’s physicians to ensure total care.”

The idea of Complete Health Dentistry is to ensure the health of each patient with a thorough

examination of the mouth as well as the gums in an attempt to uncover any pathology that may arise that a physician would not be looking for in a routine examination. Research has shown that making good oral health a priority can lower the risk factors for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, pregnancy complications, and Alzheimer’s as well as certain cancers.

Besides being highly skilled in aesthetic dentistry, treatment of TMJ, dental implant placement and other types of restorative dentistry, Drs. Beard and Fernandez now have the ability to identify oral areas of conflict in breathing and treat sleep disorders in children that can lead to bed wetting, ADHD, allergies, asthma, and a host of other conditions. Dr Beard shared, “This is really exciting. One of the advantages of having a family practice is that we see multiple generations, from grandparents to youngsters. And now, with our Healthy Start program we can help correct sleep disorders in children before they develop into adult conditions.”

Dr. Beard and Dr. Fernandez (& their founding partner, Dr. Torgan) have been honored to support the Hidden Hills community for several decades with their attention to the health of each patient, “Free Dentistry Days,” “Give Back A Smile,” and many community sponsorships.

We all have that one dish that simply bursts with unforgettable flavors, and while it may take multiple ingredients to achieve such taste bud wonderment, the oils and vinegars at Olive Alchemy can supply any recipe with a taste that leaves your taste buds awe-struck.

Selena O’Connor opened her doors in Calabasas six-months ago in hopes of bringing the community a fresh twist on the two most basic kitchen ingredients: extra virgin olive oils, and fine balsamic vinegars. While many people do not give much thought to where their oils and vinegars derive from, O’Connor strives to educate each person who walks through her doors about how crucial it is to select the freshest oil for your consumption.

The oils featured at Olive Alchemy are imported from all over the world, and are made from dry harvested olives, all guaranteed to be the absolute freshest of their kind. The oil featured in the fall season originates from the southern hemisphere, having been crushed in the spring to ensure that the bottle you purchase is nothing but the very finest indeed.

In addition to the authentic nature of each oil, the balsamic vinegars that occupy the shelves originate from Modena, Italy, having been aged for 18 years. The oils in the store range from the simplistic extra virgin olive oils that can be used for cooking, or even as a soothing hair treatment, to the bold flavors such as: jalapeño, or wild mushroom and sage.

“I love to experiment with creative and healthy foods but am not a ‘fussy’ cook, so I love the ease of the direct flavors of these delicious oils and vinegars,” says O’ Connor. “My Mom worked with artisan food companies from the time I was in middle school, and being from Bay Area we were always able to select from a variety food products. I wanted to bring that excitement to my hometown in LA “

O’Connor, being a mother of a one year old son, wholly believes in the product not only for the ease factor, but also for the nutritional benefits it provides. Olive Alchemy has the perfect gift baskets for the upcoming holiday season with fine handpainted ceramic dishes to jars of delectable stuffed olives, of course paired with the divine oils and vinegars offered. Olive Alchemy also hosts monthly events to learn more about the product as well as to concoct more kitchen creations utilizing the unique, mouthwatering flavors these fine oils employ.

Olive Alchemy is certainly a destination spot for your welloiled needs.

UR PETS ARE OUR FAMILY, there is no debate. We dress them up or down according to the occasion, we make sure they are bundled up when the cold weather rolls in, and we always make certain to reward them with delicious treats when they have behaved in an impeccable manner. The people over at Shaggy Chic know how important it is for your pets to live a long, healthy, and stylish life and they have everything to make sure those things are achieved.

OLinda Manasee always had an affinity for pets which is the reason she opened Shaggy Chic nine years ago. She knew how much people cared for their animals and strived to have a boutique in the community where people could go to buy their pets items that suited their own unique, fun-loving personalties. Manasee also opened up a pet spa which is currently located in Oak Park, where all pooch pampering needs can be met. The boutique houses many items like dog collars, beds, harnesses, clothing items, and handmade pieces made from local

artisans. Along with dog apparel, Shaggy Chic carries items for horse lovers too and will be stocked up for equestrians this upcoming holiday season.

“It’s a happy business,” said Manasee. The pet boutique, in addition to the grooming spa both attract people who love their pets like family, and the pets themselves add such a joyful element to the community. Whenever people bring their pets into Shaggy Chic, Manasee makes sure to reward them with treats for the optimal shopping experience. Manasee values her customers, and aims to listen to the needs

and wants of each one, making certain to bring in inventory that suits each customer, along with their faithful friends. “If I can find it for someone, I will, I gladly do special orders,” said Manasee.

In addition, Shaggy Chic values American-made products, which many people within the community place a high importance on, especially when it involves treats and daily food options. Shaggy Chic

Integrity and follow through are two ideals many businesses lack in, however, there are still people who believe these two things are in congruence to the longevity and success of a business. Natalie Waknine, owner of NES Property Services is a stellar example of a person who has a deep understanding of how invaluable being true to each individual client really is.

“We are a company based on integrity, full disclosure, and constant communication,” said Waknine, “We have ongoing relationships with our clients.”

Waknine prides herself on keeping all lines of communication open with each client she takes on and accredits that to much of her success in both the construction and real estate business. Since she deals with remodeling people’s homes to be what they envision, she makes it a point to prioritize their happiness and also ensures that they trust her to fulfill the job seamlessly.

She discovered her love for remodeling while she began work with her brother, who was a contractor. Although she attended college at CSUN and earned a degree in psychology, she decided to

pursue the field of remodels and real estate independently since it infallibly suited her, and making homes beautiful was her true passion. Throughout her journey, she also uncovered a love for preparing homes to sell, which she offers through her company today.

While building her company, Waknine made it her primary goal to hold a reputation of being available to her clients whenever need be, in addition to being a company that valued the client’s time first and foremost, which do not always go hand in hand in the world of remodeling, or preparing a home to be shown. Waknine also

Her devotion to completing the job in not only a time efficient manner, but also a financially conscious one, has boosted her rapport in the community of being a contractor who handles her job with grace.

“I’m the contractor to be completely honest from the beginning, we don’t flake, and we have ample crews, we are definitely different,” said Waknine.

“When did a way of ‘just coping’ become part of a lifestyle?”
ANDREA MALKIN

No one says, “When I grow up, I want to be an addict.” Most envision themselves living in a serene ‘television-like’ family with nothing more debilitating in their lives than a cold or a lost school book, but few live in this reality. The world is a stressful place for children to grow, physically and mentally. Home life and genetics do play a key role in future addictions. Some children use food, books, television or even bullying to initially cope with stress. Others mimic the alcoholic or drug addict parent because it is all that they know. Andrea Malkin, a private addiction therapist, has been in business for over 20 years and she uses her one-on-one therapy to enable her clients to learn to make healthy choices for themselves.

“Sadly,” Andrea says, “it is simple to become an addict. Addictions are behaviors of dependence, where someone thinks and believes without the use of [a drug, a drink, etc.] they can’t function. And the main problem is that these behaviors need to be increased because the usual amount stops working shortly [and then the drug or the behavior] becomes harmful to the person using or to those around them.” When it gets to this, the addict lives in a lonely world alienated from everyone around them, unable to see any way out. It is a vicious unrelenting cycle as the addict attempts to escape his/her mental pain. Most people will visit a dentist two times a year for a teeth cleaning and they will see their doctor once a year for a physical. They will write it off to taking good care of their physical

health. Conversely, a person’s mental health is often overlooked or simply ignored. The mind and body work as a whole and one cannot be healthy without the other. Andrea understands this and works to help her clients to understand and embrace this as well.

Andrea has successfully treated her clients who, even years later, come back to thank her for her guidance and the safe platform she gave them to express themselves. “Happiness is a choice,” Andrea says and she guides her clients so that they find healthy ways to relieve their stress and to lead happy lives. She teaches them that it is not “what you use, but why you use…the how and the why tell the story of addictions.” She shows her clients that everyone has choices, but if they are not taught to make healthy choices, they don’t know how to choose strength over weakness, joy over sorrow, and to be a victor instead of a victim.

“Without discussing why we live doing the very things that make us dislike ourselves even more,” Andrea says, “the behaviors never change.”

Andrea doesn’t badger clients into talking and admits with refreshing honesty that she will tell a client that sometimes she is wrong. She offers a private, safe place where clients can explore and grow into the person they want to become by realizing that it’s not only “OK“ to choose you and your needs first (before others) but mandatory to succeed in transferring negative behaviors into positive action.

Aldik Home is not exactly within ten miles from Hidden Hills, but their exquisite holiday offerings are more than worth the extra bit of mileage. Some stores discourage people from touching the merchandise, Aldik Home dares you to keep your hands to yourself and welcomes all who want to see and touch their wares. Walking

into Aldik Home is like entering a Disneyland for adults. Kids will love the sparkly trees, the shiny ornaments and the soft Christmas music playing in the background, while adults will be inundated with choices. Silk flowers and plants, artificial succulents and trees, along with home decor are tempting enough, but then, there is an area filled with dozens of artificial

Christmas trees decorated with thousands of beautiful ornaments, silk ribbons, and LED lights.

Opened in 1951, by Richard Gold, the store evolved from selling plastic fruit, flowers and plants to high quality silk flowers, plants, trees, home accessories, and mesmerizing Christmas items.

Nothing in the store is just for show. Everything can be plucked off any

44 Hidden Hills Magazine | Winter 2016/2017

of the trees and purchased. The artificial Christmas tree lot carries a multitude of styles from 3’ to 12’ trees. If you are like me and not design-savvy, there are Christmas tree decorating classes as well as designers roaming the store eager to help and offer advice.

If you are planning a wedding, the store designers will help make silk flower arrangements, boutonnières, and bouquets that will keep forever to remember the big day. There are items

that once you see them, you will wonder why you never had them in your home in the first place. Aldik Home displays the magic of decorating your home for every day and for Christmas. Comfortable shoes and a cup of cocoa are my recommendations for enhancing the fulfilling and unique shopping experience.

AT A VERY YOUNG AGE, HIDDEN HILLS RESIDENT BARRY RUDIN, FOUNDER OF BARRY’S TICKETS, LEARNED THAT SUPPLY + DEMAND AND A KNACK FOR TAKING CARE OF HIS CUSTOMERS WERE HIS FRONT-ROW-CENTER TICKET TO SUCCESS

TO THE LEAGUES RESIDENTENDEAVORS

When hard work meets hustle, endless opportunity is born. There rarely is a success story that does not involve at least one of these components, and Barry Rudin is no stranger to either. Rudin discovered the simple math in the margin between buying and selling tickets when he was just fifteen years old and perfected the art of working the law of supply and demand to his advantage. “I always worked hard and was determined to acquire tickets that were in demand,” said Rudin.

Anxious to earn more consistently, Rudin decided he wanted to work as a broker for a local ticket agency, but they required him to prove his integrity before they hired him full time. Rudin began going to the arenas and venues to buy and sell the tickets at a profit, and was more than successful in his ventures. Soon enough, Rudin was employing others to stand in line for tickets, and would turn around to sell them for a fair profit. Needless to say, Rudin proved his savvy for the ticket sales industry and was hired by the agency for his tenacity and dedication.

After working for the agency for five months, Rudin at 18 years of age discovered he could make more profit from buying and selling independently rather than at a wage and commission the agency was offering, which is when he decided to go into business for himself. While Rudin was attending USC for business on an associate’s scholarship, he simultaneously conducting his ticket business.

“In between classes I would be calling back clients, working full time and was doing it out of my apartment, I

Winter 2016/2017 | Hidden Hills Magazine 63

started a little business out of it,” said Rudin.

Rudin’s entrepreneurial spirit and fierce devotion to succeeding in such a competitive field led him to reap the rewards hard work brings about. While attending USC, Rudin’s associate was robbed at gunpoint in his apartment by someone who acted as if they were purchasing tickets. The robber took everything Rudin had which left him no choice but to take a semester off in hopes of regaining the money he had lost. Although the way he lost the hard-earned money was tragic, the way he earned it back was nothing short of triumphant. It wasn’t until Phantom of the Opera came to Los Angeles, that Rudin would realize just how much success his business would soon acquire. It was the

biggest theatre show to hit Los Angeles which increased his ticket sales exponentially.

“When Phantom of the Opera ended, the ticket business didn’t end for me, it made a decision for me, instead of going to law school, I became a ticket broker,” said Rudin.

Today, Barry’s Tickets serves the Southern California region with the philosophy of providing a full-service, true broker approach; one of the main reasons his company has been as competitive as it has been amongst others of its kind. Barry’s became a sponsor of the Clippers, Kings and Galaxy teams and are currently a sponsor of the Clippers and a consolidation partner for the L.A. Kings, which helped brand Barry’s tickets in the Southern California marketplace.

Barry’s Tickets has the largest inventory of Clippers, Kings, Dodgers, Rams, as well as the major venues in Southern California, such as The Greek Theatre and Hollywood Bowl. The prime inventory provides customers with major benefits so they can cut out the middle man, and if they don’t have the tickets you are seeking out, they will find them for you.

Barry’s Tickets is differentiated by many aspects, such as the personal one-on-one attention any customer can receive when being advised on which tickets

Rudin. This helps to ensure lower prices since each client is going straight to the source itself, instead of navigating through multiple websites with added charges at the end of checkout.

Rudin and his family reside in their new home in Hidden Hills and feel “blessed,” by such a supportive, beautiful community. The Barry’s Tickets Calabasas office is also only a short drive away from the new abode, which makes Hidden Hills an even more sought after spot.

Barry Rudin exemplifies how

and seating suit their needs best. Rudin, through Tickets Direct has partnered to create Costcotickets. com and is excited to offer added benefits to Costco members with discounted tickets. In the future, Barry expects his ticket service to grow in their partnerships and in their sponsorships additionally.

“We’re the only branded fullservice ticket broker left in Los Angeles that really values our clients, we really value our clients instead of just putting them up on exchanges,” said

determination can not only support one’s wildest ideas, but also can be a foundational building block for a successful business. So whether you are eager to watch the Dodgers game from behind home plate, or want to score last minute seats to the concert of your dreams, Barry and his staff are determined to make sure your day or night out is absolutely unforgettable, in the best seats for you.

KAREN GASPIN

Always Happy HelptoOut

Idrive past the house twice before I find it set back behind a wall and subtle landscaping. Karen Gaspin, a petite, darkhaired woman flanked by her two dogs, meets me at the door of her Hidden Hills home. As we walk back to her kitchen, she says, “I’m not sure why you are interviewing me.” After we talk, I easily know why I am speaking with her; she is someone who sees an issue and refuses to walk away from it. Her children are grown, her life is full and yet, she feels so strongly about helping others that her days are filled with volunteering her time, her skills, and her heart, as well as working for causes in which she feels a connection. Cancer Schmancer Movement, the organization founded by actress and activist Fran Drescher, promotes early detection and prevention of cancer, and Karen is deeply committed to the organization. Now, that I know her, I would never drive or walk by Karen, even once.

Karen and her husband grew up and started their family in New York. She became close with her neighbor, Sandy and her young kids. They moved freely between the two houses for the six years that they lived side by side. Even after moving to California, they visited each other often. When Sandy was diagnosed with brain cancer, Karen talked to her daily. On one visit, Karen noticed that Sandy had no help other than her husband and children. With four mutual friends, she set up ‘Sandy’s Helpers.” They had a network of 22 families that supplied dinners to the family five nights a week for eight months until Sandy died.

When I ask, what motivates her to volunteer so much of her time, she says, “I feel everything deeply. Some people are happy to just be, but I feel others’ problems personally and I know that I need to help.”

Winter 2016/2017 | Hidden Hills Magazine 69
MAKINGADIFFERENCE

MAKINGADIFFERENCE

Karen moved with her husband and three children from New York to California three weeks before 9/11. A friend died in one of the towers, another made it safely out while saving others. She felt the enormity of it all from 3,000 miles away. Never one to sit around and wait for others to act, Karen plunged herself into volunteering. She volunteered at Haven Hills, a center that helps women who are victims of domestic violence. She also worked in her children’s schools, joined a local ‘Brady Foundation’ chapter that operated to raise awareness on gun safety in the home, wrote letters and made calls when a hate-crime occurred at Calabasas High School, worked on Maria Shriver’s Women’s Conference when she was the first lady of California, and other events. She looks at me as she’s explaining the organizations she volunteers at and quietly says, “It feels like something I should be doing.”

Susan Holland, the executive director of The Cancer Schmancer Movement, is a close friend of Karen’s and asked her to be a part of the effort. Through educating people on good eating, a clean environment, and good medical care, the organization is a powerful tool that helps people and Karen is a part of it by working to help produce the fundraising events.

This year, Karen also volunteered at Maria Shriver’s ‘Move For Minds’ event that was hosted in six cities across the country and was a sponsorled event that raised money for Alzheimer’s disease.

A book, “A Man Called Ove,” by Fredrik Backman sits on Karen’s kitchen counter. There is a quote in the book that aptly describes the essence of Karen’s personality. “There are people who do what they should and those who don’t. There are people who do and people who just talk.” Karen does more than she should and she never just talks.

When I leave Karen’s house, I think of the familiar quote about the boy throwing one of the thousands of stranded starfish back into the ocean and the man who asks him why he bothers when there are too many starfish to help them all, and the boy replies, “It mattered to that one.” Karen reminds me of that boy; making a difference one person at a time.

Telluride has a bit of that, too. However, there’s something special about the way Telluride and its surrounding communities maintain the downto-earth sensibility that attracted people to the Rocky Mountain state in the first place -- and it deserves to be discussed.

While cultural happenings like the Telluride Film Festival, Bluegrass Festival and Jazz Festival ensure that Telluride will remain a household name in Southern California, the locals’ respect for its natural attributes and colorful history ensures the area will maintain its integrity. After all, the draws for many visitors include a plethora of

downhill skiing opportunities and panoramic mountain vistas. There’s also the fact that the area is wonderfully self-contained in a box canyon land formation enclosed by 13,000 and 14,000foot peaks. Even with those natural boundaries, however, there is boundless fun to be had for couples, families, and business groups, thanks to the prolific offering of outdoor and indoor activities.

The juxtaposition of big and small makes Telluride an appealing escape, especially for those coming from Los Angeles’ formidable urban sprawl. While the town is just eight blocks wide and twelve blocks long, it looms large as a destination through its significant role in the history of the American West, designated as a National Historic Landmark District in 1964 by the U.S Bureau of the

Interior. The distinction is a point of pride for the locals, many of whom are committed to preserving Telluride’s historically significant architecture, open space, traditional design elements and, most of all, the quiet and unpretentious small-town mountain lifestyle encompassing Victorian-era homes, clapboard storefronts, boutiques, art galleries, gourmet restaurants and historic buildings.

Telluride connects to Mountain Village, which is 9,500 feet above sea level and accessible via an epic 13-minute ride on a free gondola, the first and only free public transportation system of its kind in the United States. The home of the Telluride Ski Resort and Uncompahgre National Forest, founded in 1987, is the “modern” counterpart to Telluride town’s Old West character. 2,100 acres of rolling aspen and spruce-

SPINNING SUCCESS

Born and raised in Hidden Hills, Sam French names the little city for the reason he places such high emphasis on his ability to develop a creative, artistic community around him, even in a crowded, lonely, busy city like New York. At the early age of fifteen, Sam started his music career as a DJ at house parties and small clubs in the Hidden Hills and Calabasas area.

This branched out quickly into a full-fledged career as a DJ. After high school, Sam was accepted to Columbia University, but deferred for two years. He acknowledged his need to explore the city and understand it for himself, choosing to dig his hands in and create roots in the fruitful music community. He does just that as he continues to expand his network and build a reputation as DJ, artist manager and producer.

HH: You’re clearly doing a lot more than just DJing at this point, take me through the current state of the union.

SF: Over the past couple years I’ve tried to refocus my energy to do less nightclubs and more private events around New York, which is great because I kind of fell into this niche of playing these amazing gigs and getting a lot of my time back. I’ve started gravitating toward artist management with that freedom, so I manage bands, songwriters, producers and electronic producers. I’m sort of moving out of the nightclub scene and into this new realm, but I’m still pretty active on the DJ front, doing gigs whenever I can.

HH: You mentioned some of the kinds of people you work with, but what music gets you really jazzed? What kinds of artists do you gravitate toward?

SF: I think what really excites me about artists is when I see a spark of something completely original – totally new. I think one of the misconceptions about singer songwriters is that it’s all about a beautiful voice, but it’s so much more. It’s about having an interesting voice and knowing what to do with it. Of course you have Adele, who has the most beautiful voice in the world, but then there’s also the Amy Winehouses and the Sam Smiths and the Ed Sheerans and that’s just as important as having a beautiful voice, because they’re original and different. My other big thing is honesty in music. I don’t like when I can tell people are writing standard trite songs. I can feel the insincerity. I really need to know it’s from an honest place with musicians.

HH: And that sincerity has a lot to do with what catches on, too, unless you have lots of money and amazing producers. It’s hard to get away with disingenuous music.

SF: Absolutely. I think that thread kind of started with Lorde… seeing this honesty in pop music coming to the forefront that hasn’t existed in a long time, you know. The successful ‘singer songwriter’ acts back in the day were the Randy Newmans, Janis Joplins, Joni Mitchells… it was all very honest. And I think through the 80’s and 90’s, as pop culture really started to become larger than life, people started crafting these acts artificially because consumers needed more color.

That all changed recently… there’s this intense intimacy between pop artists and their fans now, it’s really hard to hide behind something fake. So I think those walls are starting to crumble bit by bit and people are starting to realize how important it is to be honest. And that’s why you have musicians now that are a little less curated. Which comes from

a management team sitting down and saying, “Who are you as an artist? Lets be honest to that and lets find a way to compliment that.” So it’s really exciting to me to see honest songwriting from artists.

HH: Is that the direction you take when you’re managing the musicians you work with?

SF: It is. Everyone I work with, all the producers and artists and my partners, we all take such time and care in fostering a sense of community, authentic relationships and a genuine desire to work together. It’s such a big part of why I love doing what I do. And I think that comes back to my roots in Hidden Hills, honestly. The togetherness, the trust and security you feel by creating a home with people, that’s what I want when I’m working.

HH: So it seems like this is really a new frontier—or new old frontier, maybe, in artist management. It’s wonderful you’ve tapped into that and seems like such an organic thing to do: look to your artists to shape their own image. It seems so obvious!

SF: It’s true, but on the flip-side, that only works with certain artists. I have one young woman who in the years before we started working together, had this whole image of what a pop star should be and should be singing about. But organically, she’s so cool and interesting and raw, so since I’ve started working with her. I’ve tried to burn away all the fat and really encourage her to sink into herself and let that be what guides her, but that’s pretty rare. I think it’s important to foster what you can where you can and that’s really the mark of a talented manager. That’s really all I want to do for these amazing musicians. If I can do that, I’ll be happy.

Cooped-up McGinnis Style

John and Mary McGinnis’ daughters Dani and Nicole had wanted chickens for some time. They finally agreed that they would look into it and before any more discussion could occur, the girls ran out and bought 10 chicks. That pretty much forced the start of the project. The chicks need to stay inside for about 7 weeks, which is exactly how long it took John to build the coop. 7 weekends and too many trips to Home Depot to count. He bought some old barn wood on Craigslist and made the rest of the coop material look old and rustic. It was a great fatherdaughter project and they had a lot of fun working on this together.

Knowing that “Dad” would end up taking care of everything, John built the coop with “low maintenance” in mind. Automatic waterers, a food bin that can handle the hens for a week, and easy options for cleaning were just some of the features for simple upkeep.

“We learned that chickens have funny personalities and always seem happy to see us,” says John. “They get organic chicken feed and they love treats (table scraps) and they reward us with a few delicious farmfresh eggs every day!”
