PUBLISHERS

In recent years, Hidden Hills has seen an evolution in how our City is perceived. What we who live here know, however, is that we continue at our core to be a community rooted in neighborly values extending far beyond our (somewhat) famous gates. Much of this issue is a testament

to those values. Within these pages you will find a recurring theme of giving and togetherness on a very simple and grass-roots level. Of course, we know all communities value these things. We are proud that these traits we share are what keep us all connected.

Here's wishing you a most enjoyable summer!

MY FRIEND'S PLACE

Fifteen-year-old ANDIE AVIV, finishing ninth grade this month, and My Friend’s Place, a facility that “assists and inspires homeless youth to build self-sufficient lives,” would appear to have nothing in common ...until you look deeper. Andie wants to help teens who do not have the family and community that she does find a place where they too can belong and get guidance to grow to reach their potential. Andie may be young, but her compassion and heart are far more mature than her years.

My Friend’s Place, located at 5850 Hollywood Blvd., offers programs and services to homeless youth. It serves over 1,400 homeless youth aged 12-25 per year. Their primary goal is to “lower traditional barriers to service and provide homeless youth with the opportunity to improve their psychological, intellectual and physical capacity to reach their potential.” People like Andie make this happen.

How did you become involved with “My Friend’s Place”?

Andie wants to help teens who do not have the family and community that she does find a place where they too can belong and get guidance to grow to reach their potential.

+
Summer 2019 | Hidden Hills Magazine 25

My mom and I had been talking about how many more homeless people we see on the streets here in the Valley. We were sharing how challenging a life like that must be and how we both wanted to do something. My mom is the one who found My Friend’s Place online and we felt it was a good spot for us because of its focus on young people. We started emailing them, asking questions like “how do we get more involved and what can we do to help even more?” I immediately felt a big connection to My Friend’s Place when we showed up for our first shift volunteering. It just all hit me how amazing this place is and how it impacts so many lives. They call it a safe haven and it is, especially where it is located right off the freeway on Hollywood Boulevard. It’s very easy to volunteer, although you need to be an adult to work handson with the young people. So instead, I organized a clothing drive at my school, de Toledo High School, for this special dance/prom My Friend’s Place is hosting for the young people and I will be starting a club next year at my school to promote other activities.

What drew you to them?

Their purpose is what drew me to them. There are hundreds of homeless kids out on the streets of LA that don’t belong on the streets. My Friend’s Place allows these young people to get the support and guidance they need to succeed in life. This organization is one of few places that truly let everyone come in, no matter where they’re at emotionally or physically, whether suffering from addiction or clean and sober. My Friend’s Place never discriminates and always works through any issues that are happening with these young people. This is often the last stop for many of them when they’ve been turned away from other resources and they need a helping hand. It is even helping me to be more tolerant and compassionate toward others.

How long have you volunteered there? What do you do there?

I have only been volunteering there for about three months, yet it still has made such an incredible impact on me and I can’t wait to continue it for years to come. For me, because I am younger, I usually clean up their closet and organize and do project work. They have this huge “closet” where the young

26 Hidden Hills Magazine | Summer 2019
ANDIE PUTS A GREAT DEAL OF CARE INTO ENSURING THAT ALL SHE COLLECTS FOR OTHER TEENS IS AS SPECIAL AND MEANINGFUL

people can get donated clothes and shoes, but it gets messed up daily, so I organize that and clean it up. With summer coming up, I hope to volunteer way more often and lead special drives and activities with guidance from the people at My Friend’s Place.

How has it made an impact on you?

This place has made the biggest impact on me out of all the places I’ve volunteered because you can see the change. Just thinking about the amazing support and acceptance that is shown to these people is a positive step and something that has been denied them for most of their lives. They’ve been abused, rejected, discarded, made to feel less than…the little I do to make them feel special makes me feel special, makes my heart full, and one day when I am older, I hope to actually see their faces light up when they find something that makes them feel purposeful in life. Of course, it seems like just another organization serving an underserved community, but truly from the bottom of my heart, it brings out the goodness in you because of the loving philosophy behind it.

Have you met people there who you have remained in contact with?

I haven’t gotten very close with the other volunteers because they’re often different people. But there was this one volunteer I met who used to be homeless and this place set her on her feet and now she has a family and a job. She put herself through college and medical school. She’s incredible. She became a complete inspiration to me, and I also have her book.

What can people do to help the organization? What needs do you see that need to be met?

Honestly, just volunteering makes all the difference. Donating your time or your belongings that you may no longer need. Interacting with the kids or finding out what needs to be done. The place itself can always use the extra hands and anyone is welcome, which is the best part. There are a lot of homeless young people on the streets who you may not be aware of

because they look like everyone else; they blend in on purpose, to stay safe and remain anonymous. But that’s no way to live.

Please share a bit about yourself, anything that you feel like sharing--i.e., siblings/family life, hobbies, aspirations...

I am a competitive equestrian, volleyball player, and an A+ student. I see my life as a true blessing and I want to make these homeless kids feel what I feel every day. I have two amazing, supportive parents, and two sisters who have always been there for me. I couldn’t have done the things I do now without them. Lastly, I aspire to be a vet when I am older and help animals regain their stride and make them healthy.

Just as the story, The Star Thrower, by Loren Eiseley, points out that saving just one of the thousands of starfish stranded

THIS PLACE HAS MADE THE BIGGEST IMPACT ON ME OUT OF ALL THE PLACES I’VE VOLUNTEERED BECAUSE YOU CAN SEE THE CHANGE.

on the beach seems pointless, each human life that is helped, changed and bettered is important and necessary. Instead of becoming overwhelmed by the task of so many needing help, My Friend’s Place and Andie Aviv see and meet the challenge of helping as many people as possible, because it all matters; each hand reached out to help has the potential to make a difference in another’s life.

MY FRIEND’S PLACE MISSION IS TO ASSIST AND INSPIRE HOMELESS YOUTH TO BUILD SELF SUFFICIENT LIVES.

MY FRIEND'S PLACE STATS:

My Friend's Place served 1,418 homeless young people last year - over one third of the homeless youth population in Los Angeles.

MFP provided nearly 30,000 meals to homeless youth.

MFP provided over 540 linkages to on-site and off-site medical care for youth.

MFP provided intensive case management to 452 homeless young people.

JAKE PARR

CATCH A RISING COUNTRY STAR

Rising Country artist and long-time Hidden Hills resident, Jake Parr, traces his affinity for Country music and performing back to his bloodlines. His father, Shawn, was an on-air personality at the number one Country music radio station in America, 93.9 KZLA. Jake was also exposed to the world of Country music during the span of his dad's career at Go Country 105.1 and is currently hosting a nationally syndicated radio show based in Nashville. Jake’s grandmother, Jill Jackson, also now a Hidden Hills resident, was half of the 1960’s duo “Paul & Paula”; together, they shared the stage as opening act with The Beatles and Elvis Presley, also topping the charts with their million selling, number one hit “Hey Paula.”

Jake’s mother, Bliss, is a former long-time resident of Hidden Hills. She was president of the Hidden Hills Horsemen’s Association and introduced Jake at a young age to horseback riding and its accompanying lifestyle. Growing up, he was also drawn to the ocean waves and became an avid surfer

Jake shared the story about his first time performing in front of an audience, when surfing and Country music on stage crossed paths. “Coming back from a Sunday surf session in 2014, I stopped by Sagebrush Cantina to grab some food on my way home and saw the band onstage; Tina Michelle and

the Rhinestone Cowboys were friends of mine. When they asked if I wanted to sing along, I said ‘Sure!’’’ While still barefoot and in board shorts, Jake belted out “Chicken Fried,” a Zac Brown Band composition. He caught the singing bug and decided “there’s nothing like looking out at the crowd and seeing people singing along, sharing the music.” It’s also notable that Jake performed at the legendary Whisky A-Go-Go for Ultimate Jam

JAKE WAS ALSO EXPOSED TO THE WORLD OF COUNTRY MUSIC DURING THE SPAN OF HIS DAD'S CAREER AT GO COUNTRY 105.1 AND IS CURRENTLY HOSTING A NATIONALLY SYNDICATED RADIO SHOW BASED IN NASHVILLE.

Night in August 2018, covering Tom Petty’s “Mary Jane’s Last Dance.” He mentions how lucky he felt standing on the same stage where his Granny stood half a century ago along with all the iconic super stars who graced that hallowed venue.

In 1999 at age 4, Jake attended his first live music concert, Kenny Chesney, that made an enduring impression on him and planted the seeds of his desire

to be part of the burgeoning Country music scene. He mentions attending the “Ship Kicker Music Festival” in 2017 at the Queen Mary in Long Beach where Country artist Lee Brice pulled him up onstage to join in front of 7,000 fans. When I asked him what his all-time favorite concert was, he replied without hesitation, “Garth Brooks at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville 2018.”

34 Hidden Hills Magazine | Summer 2019

Nashville also has roots in Jake’s background: He spent the last 2 years living there, committed to taking steps in the heartland of Country music to reach the next level on his quest to break big. While there, he produced 9 new music videos; some of the titles include “Don’t Want To Push It,” “Parking Lot Party,” “Miss Me When You’re Sober,” and “Empty Frames.” However, this So Cal Hidden Hills guy says he was not a fan of the harsh Tennessee winters and was eager to return home to the Golden State to again hit the surf and soak up the sunshine.

In addition to surfing, Jake’s an ardent snowboarder, golfer, fisherman and poker player. When I asked him what career path he might take if not pursuing a singing career, he said commercial fisherman. Jake often goes out trolling from Newport Harbor.

If you visit Jake’s web page at www. jakeparrmusic.com, you can view his first

music video for “Barn Dance” that was filmed at a buddy’s ranch up in Camarillo. Its good-time vibe is both uplifting and celebratory, hitting on all the necessary ingredients for a successful farm shindig: good friends, girls in sundresses, cold beer, a bit o’moonshine, hayrides and dropped tailgates.

Jake spent a year-and-a-half studying at the renowned Musicians Institute in Hollywood, enrolled in the Independent Artist’s Program. [JOE, please find out what year that was; otherwise, this comes out of “whole cloth” and is disjointed] While there, he found it useful learning to read music and implementing “Pro Tools”; yet, he was dissatisfied with the advice offered on the business aspect and thoughtfully sought guidance from industry lawyers to pilot the murky waters of contracts and management issues.

Also, admirably, Jake finds time in his full life for a pretty big slice of philanthropy. During out

interview, he shared the story of joining friends in Malibu last Fall in the wake of the devastating Woolsey fire to bring water, supplies and gasoline to stranded victims for two arduous 14-hour days. In addition, he is a volunteer with Adaptive Surf Team U.S.A. that helps blind, paralyzed, amputees, and other disabled athletes pursue their passion for catching waves. His participation in that venture is particularly near and dear to his heart, as his uncle Jesse Billauer was paralyzed in a surfing accident 27 years ago and is a team member with A.S.T.U.

THE KANYE WEST/YEEZY LEMONADE STAND

THIS PAST MARCH, HIDDEN HILLS RESIDENT KANYE WEST and his entire brood surprised his neighbors with a Yeezy sneakers popup “Lemonade Stand” at the corner of Long Valley Rd. and Round Meadow

Rd, the unofficial center of Hidden Hills. West and adidas teamed up with families across the U.S. to sell the Yeezy 700 v2 “Geode”, with all proceeds going to the National Alliance for Mental Illness.

The flash-quick event was also an opportunity for the West children to get involved in early-learning on how to not only be enterprising, but to do something good with what you’ve got.

So much so that she was inspired to create an event that would give them all an opportunity to share (and sell) their creations with friends and neighbors. Thus, on June 1st, 2019, the first annual Hidden Hills Pop-up Marketplace was born.

All afternoon, residents poured in an partook in Hidden Hills grown wines and vegetables, jewelry, custom apparel, vintage decor, art and more!

Be the early bird or fashionably late. Right when the market opens it tends to be less crowded, of course there are exceptions to every rule, but generally speaking just as the market opens the crowds are thinner. In addition to fighting the crowds you'll have the best selection of produce and goods.

Best Deals are in Bulk. You'll get the best deal when you buy more and why not? If it's fresh and in season save some money and experiment with new recipes highlighting that delicious find. You can always freeze, can or dry your seasonal deals.

3 4

Go all the way. Whole foods, like carrots, radishes, and beets, are sold whole (greens attached). Make sure to get the whole vegetable, root to greens. Not only do they last longer but the greens are healthy and delicious when washed and prepared correctly (great for juicing or used in place of chard and kale).

Be adventurous. Don't know what that interesting fruit is? Ask the farmer. They will not only explain but using tell you how to prepare it and their favorite recipe too.

RIPE ADVICE

MELONS

Cantaloupe - Watermelon - Honey Dew Melons should always feel heavy for their size & have a bit of a sweet melon smell. Watermelons do not tend to have a melon smell - but be sure to look for the field or yellow spot!

STONE FRUITS

Apricots - Peaches -Plums - Necatrines

Look for fruits that feel heavy for their size & give just a bit when pushed, be sure to avoid fruits that have green near the stem.

SUMMER SQUASH

Look for squash that are small to medium size, as well as firm & fairly heavy.

Zucchini blossoms are an amazing summer market treat.

CHERRIES

Bing & Rainier varieties will be available May - August.

Look for cherries with deep dark saturation (Rainier will have the yellow & red tint) with a bright green stem.

BELL PEPPERS

Bell Peppers should have smooth shiny skin & feel heavy for their size no matter what color.

BLACKBERRIES

Blackberries should be shiny & plump. Avoid any cartons with mold or mushy berries as these damages spread fast.

FRESH HERBS

Basil - Cilantro - Parsley - Rosemary - Chives

Always look for vibrant leaves & fresh looking stems. Buy live herbs whenever possible to grow at home!

AVOCADOS

We tend to buy avocados that are more on the un-ripe side & keep them on the counter to ripen or in a paper bag to speed up the process.

STRAWBERRIES

Look for bright red strawberries & do not worry about size or shape - the best strawberries come in all shapes & sizes. If you see white near the stem they were not picked at peak ripeness.

CORN

Look for corn that has tightly closed, fresh looking husks with fresh cut stems & tassels. Local growers are always best when it comes to corn.

THE 2ND ANNUAL HIDDEN HILLS MAGAZINE HOOTENANNY BRINGS TOGETHER LEGENDS OF MUSIC, FOOD & SPIRITS FOR ONE MEMORABLE EVENT

The slight chill in the air, Saturday, May 18th did not dampen the spirit of the crowd strolling into the lush grounds at the King Gillette Ranch in Calabasas for the 2nd annual Hootenanny, this time benefitting the Kevin Cordasco “Something Yellow” Foundation. A woman’s haunting vocals filled the grounds as a band played, tents held local wines, spirits, and a variety of food as people milled from place to place. One tent

housed the “Something Yellow” foundation gear and information which explained its mission, in honor of young Kevin Cordasco who battled cancer for years before he passed away, to help families financially and emotionally who have a child diagnosed with cancer. The evening was breathtaking, even as a light rain misted down. Everyone enjoyed exceptionally good music and company; all of it benefitting a powerful cause.

As people checked in, they were handed a shiny new wine glass to use throughout the evening of samplings of wine and spirits. Fully furnished, luxurious yurts formed a ‘U’ around the grounds and the concert area. The yurts, set up for VIP guests, housed cozy couches covered with throw pillows and soft blankets, tables and plenty of room to gather

together. The grassy area held wooden tables and benches for people to eat and drink all while listening to one incredible band play after another. Some brought blankets and chairs and sat picnic-style with friends and family. From sliders, to stone-fired pizza, to ribs, to desserts, the choices were plentiful, varied, and delicious. Strings of lights created a warm

canopy to the night sky, creating a homey, gentle atmosphere.

A hootenanny is defined as “…an informal gathering with folk music and sometimes dancing.” This hootenanny not only had legendary bands playing, but it brought the community of Calabasas and Hidden Hills together to support an

important foundation and it was possible in large part by four important sponsors. They stepped in, most of their own volition, to help fund the event.

Marc Shevin and his daughter, Sara Shevin, are local realtors with Berkshire Hathaway who agreed immediately when asked to become one of the event’s top sponsors. Marc says, “We always try to do something that benefits children in the community and this fit hand and glove with our philosophy.” They

support all local sports teams too because they feel that sports are good for families and the kids. Marc and his wife have lived and worked in Calabasas for over 25 years. He says, “As realtors, we can live anywhere but we love this community, so it is important to help the community we live in any way possible.” One daughter, Hanna, went to school in Calabasas with Kevin which made the event even more personal and important to them.

Alan Cruciani, head of brand and retail marketing for Audi, came across the spring issue of Hidden Hills Magazine and read the article about Keven Cordasco. With a young child of his own, he immediately called HH Magazine and asked to become a sponsor for the upcoming Hootenanny. “It was the right thing to do,” he said in a quiet voice. “The small-town feel,

the grassroots feel, touches me and I want Audi and myself to be a part of this.”

Other businesses heard the story of Kevin and asked to become sponsors as well. Paula Harris, a representative for Patio World says, “Halfway through hearing Kevin’s story, I knew we would become a sponsor. Some things are larger than the product you represent, and

I want our company to be a part of this event.”

Eli Kaspi of Pure Builders said, “Pure Builders is about building homes. A home is not a happy home when a family member is down with any illness. I am a local… from Calabasas…[and] I am also a father myself…seeing kids with these kinds of challenges inspires

The crowd was treated to extraordinary band members skillfully playing with a talent that was a wonder to watch and hear.

Mike Campbell of ‘The Dirty Knobs,’ a long-time guitarist and co-member of the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers treated the eager audience to a variety of songs;

Pistol Packin’ Mama, Black Magic Woman, Runnin’ Down A Dream, You Wreck Me, and more. Robby Krieger, a Rock and Roll Hall of fame member, who was the guitarist for The Doors, skillfully played his guitar while actor Dennis Quaid sang Riders of the Storm. He also played Incense and Peppermints, Light My Fire, Let the Good Times Roll with Cars member,

Elliot Easton on vocals and guitar and Just What I Needed sang by Sebastian Bach of Skid Row. Haley Reinhart sang Crystal Ship as the audience cheered the experience. Earlier, Andrew McMahon in In the Wilderness treated the audience to his songs. simply and comfortably part of a large family celebration.

While the music played, people celebrated the ability to be outside with friends and family, eat delectable foods, sip and enjoy spirits, all while celebrating and honoring the extraordinary bravery and strength of one young man, Kevin Cordasco. His physical presence may be gone, but his story, his fight to live, and his fight to help others only grows stronger through the years. The Hootenanny allowed us a moment to remember the power and importance of helping others, and to strengthen our resolve to continue supporting important foundations like the Kevin Cordasco Foundation; Something Yellow.

A world of flavor from ONE POTATO

Fed up with how time consuming it was to feed her family a healthy dinner every night, cookbook author and founder of the Weelicious family food brand, Catherine McCord, started One Potato, a company focused on helping parents to be their best selves at meal time by doing the work for them!

Each week, One Potato delivers 2-3 organic, semi-prepared dinners to your door. The organic sauces, dressings and condiments are all made from scratch in the One Potato kitchen, which is located in Downtown LA. The ingredients come semi prepared – meaning for example, rice is parboiled, onions are chopped, meat is marinated, the arepas dough is made and just needs to be rolled into balls

for frying. One Potato offers 10 seasonal meals to choose from each week, with 5 Family Favorites that are always on the menu (Mac n Cheese, Turkey, Beef, or Vegetarian Burgers, and Herb Roasted Chicken). Flexible pricing for families of all sizes, recipes drawn from Catherine’s trusted Weelicious library, packaging made from biodegradable cornstartch, and designed to be on the table in 15-30 minutes, One Potato is a lifesaver for busy parents! There are also plans for every dietary preference (Gluten Free, Vegetarian, Nut Free).

If you are adventurous though and want to give it a try from scratch, here are three of their most popular recipes to try at home.

We are very fortunate as Southern California residents to have a bumper crop of vibrant Mexican and Central American get-away destinations just a short flight from home. However, the well-traveled among us will always be in search

Guanajuato, Mexico: An Exquisite Town-and-Country Escape

When travelers fly into Del Bajio International Airport, they are often headed to the well-heeled resort community of San Miguel Allende. Unfortunately, they may overlook Guanajuato City, a picturesque UNESCO Heritage City on rolling hills that today exists as a university town. However, it is anything but a spring break destination, as it is Mexico’s former capital as well as the birthplace of the Mexican revolution and renowned artist Diego Rivera. It is further enriched with the legacy of its silver mining heyday and lavish neoclassical-colonial architecture awash in festive pastel hues.

An in-town hotel stay is a historic immersion, thanks to several well-priced properties near Santa Cecilia Castle that were former family haciendas. In addition to cinematic city views and beautifully appointed courtyards, the Camino Real Hotel (caminoreal.com/Hotels/Details/CR/GTO) is reminiscent of Spain’s paradores (converted convents and other historic buildings), providing comfortable stays in historic settings that are perfectly suited for couples and family travel.

several works from his long career as well as works from other contemporary Mexican artists. Other cultural havens worth exploring include Regional Museum of Guanajuato covering regional history, Museo del Pueblo de Guanajuato, and the Museo Iconográfico del Quijote with artworks by Pedro Coronel, José Guadalupe Posada and Salvador Dalí interpreting literary figure Don Quijote.

Most of the city’s pretty narrow streets lead to Hidalgo Market, built by Ernesto Brunel in 1910. The Market sells pretty much everything you would want to find in Mexico, from peasant

tops and leather goods (the best shops are on the balcony level) to numerous booths prepping and serving an aromatic, delicious and inexpensive street fare.

Couples traveling with kids will not want to miss the Mummy Museum, which puts new meaning into the old maxim “the dead tell tales.” This heady twist on a funhouse relays the city’s history through naturally mummified bodies found in and around the municipal cemetery between the mid 19th and 20th centuries. If you have a teenager learning Spanish, or you want to brush up on your language skills, be sure to find a

starting point for a Callejoneada, an evening stroll through Guanajuato’s alleyways and plazas led by guides and strolling musicians in period costumes.

A drive out to the village of Pénjamo provides a delightful rural contrast to Guanajuato City. The star attraction is Hacienda Corralejo (haciendacorralejo.com/web). It’s home base for Corralejo Tequila and other ultra-premium spirits and the birthplace of Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, father of the Mexican Revolution. The compound features museum space and workshops producing artisanal cheese, chocolate and other gourmet foods. A few miles from the agave fields, the archaeological site Plazuelas (inah.gob.mx/zonas/74-zonaarqueologica-plazuelas) has an interesting museum and outdoor pyramids, just the right size and scale to introduce younger adventurers to pre-Columbian architecture and history.

A stay at Real de Piedra (m.facebook.com/ realdepiedra) fits right in with a day at the hacienda and an exploration of a past civilization. The converted “hacienda” has a similar feel to masseria farmhouse lodging found in Southern Italy. Its converted suites and public areas are effortlessly rustic-chic, decorated with contrasting antiques and contemporary pieces by owner and interior designer Enrique Garcia. The restaurant is excellent, with a morning menu focused on farm-fresh traditional Mexican breakfast dishes and a dinner menu seamlessly fusing the styles of Central and Pacific Mexico. The property’s collection of teas and tisanes liven up the check-in area and add an extra touch of warmth tempting one to spend the day in its sunny courtyard with a good book.

Grand Solmar at Rancho San Lucas: An Easy-Does-It Vacation on the Quieter Side of Baja

The recently opened Grand Solmar at Rancho San Lucas (grandsolmarranchosanlucas.solmar.com), rolling out along a Pacific Ocean-hugging stretch of desert, is roughly 45 minutes from the crowds of central Cabo San Lucas and captures the region’s natural attributes in grand style. Public and private spaces incorporate earthy hues and contemporary furnishings, which harmonize with almost an untouched shoreline, white sands and desert terrain. Its suites and villas bring this minimalist

beauty indoors through marble floors, spa-style bathrooms with Jacuzzi tub, fully appointed kitchens, and terraces framing the ocean and beach views.

The resort’s restaurants can be enjoyed a-la-carte or with purchase of a meal plan covering all the Solmar Cabo properties, effectively capturing the laid-back mood of the area. Chef Hector Lucas spins local ingredients and recipes into unforgettable edible art at Anica; the Anica space is tailor made for a “date night” complete with warm, honey-toned lighting and live music on some nights. Guests can work off their meals and on-site cooking classes at the resort’s state-of-the-art fitness room and the bespoke Greg Norman golf course. Other fitness options that take full advantage of the sunlit landscape include aerobics classes staged on specially designed paddleboards, canoes that can be enjoyed in the lake-shaped pool, challenging mountain bike tours and yoga. The concierge desk can help guests enjoy the surrounding unspoiled desert and sea beyond the resort by arranging ATV tours, fishing cruises, kayaking, wave runner rentals, stand-up paddle and surfing lessons, diving at Pelican Rock, and even a variety of extreme sports activities that include Bungee jumping, zip-lining, parasailing and fly boarding. Those traveling with their kids can be assured they’ll get their creative and adrenaline

Couples and families considering the purchase of a second vacation home or condo may want to look into investing in one of the remaining customizable dwellings at The Residences at Rancho San Lucas, The Villas and Norman Estates, all within the Rancho San Lucas development. While the residential area was also devised in conjunction with Greg Norman, owners can personalize their piece of heaven with their choice of chic Mexican, Moroccan and Mediterranean appointments and architectural features. In addition to having access to the resort amenities, residents will enjoy the convenience of a full kitchen, a Mexican Village for shopping and entertainment, and other amenities.

Shuttles going to and from the other Solmar Hotels & Resorts properties run between the hours of 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., providing resort guests and homeowners access to the restaurants, spas and exclusive experiences (such as mixology sessions at the Grand Solmar Land’s End Asian Lounge, or the couples’ Temazcal spa experience at The Ridge at Playa Grande), as

Villa Manzu, Peninsula Papagayo, Costa Rica: Because You (And Your Family and Friends) Are Worth It!

Costa Rica’s northwestern Pacific Ocean region has emerged as one of the most desirable destinations. It boasts dry and sunny weather conditions, birding and wildlife encounters, and a location a mere fivehour flight from LAX. Even with many five-star resorts thriving, however, Villa Manzu (villamanzu. com) elevates the luxury Costa Rica experience exponentially.

This no-holds-barred destination (enjoyed by the Kardashians, Zac Effron, Beyoncé, and other A-listers) is intended to be a family affair. The entire eight-suite, 30,000 square foot property for groups of 14 to 22 people, starts at $16,500 per night and is as glamorous as you would expect. The tone is set by architect Abraham Valenzuela and Houston-based designer Lynn Yellen, who created gracious public areas with lively global flourishes and private suites that offer distinctive personalities evoking different places and moods. The Los Monos Suite, designed with children in mind, evokes Thailand. The Naciente Suite is a hip enclave that will suit teens or bridesmaids with its large closets and a wading pool just outside the patio door. The cool turquoise Pacifico Suite and romantic Moroccan-inspired Madera Suite are resorts-within-the-resorts suited for couples wanting a bit of privacy between adventures.

The way public and private areas connect are also intelligently designed, so the transition between family “together” time and individual activities is practically seamless. Executive chef Mariano

Fernandez and baker/breakfast chef Sabrina Dufort, veterans of five star properties in the area, note they prefer their current arrangement as private chefs because of their regular personal interaction with guests and large open concept kitchen that allows them to perform. Just like the interior design, the food’s foundations are Costa Rican but international in scope—even with individual dietary requirements taken into account prior to your stay.

On the property, personal guest itineraries can incorporate custom spa treatments and a multitude of activities, including (but not limited to) cooking classes, dancing lessons, yoga, Spanish lessons and art experiences, as well as lazy afternoons enjoying the views from the villa’s infinity pool. Off-property adventures run the gamut from nature hikes and photography classes to Camp Jaguar programs for teens organized with the Papagayo Explorers Club (peninsulapapagayo. com), beach barbecue picnics, jet ski rentals, nighttime bioluminescence tours by canoe, helicopter tours, mountain biking, surf lessons, rigorous beach hikes, sport fishing expeditions and wildlife treks.

Guests also have exclusive use of the Prieta Beach Club, which is only open to local homeowners. It has its own full service restaurant with a menu of superb snacks (many native to Costa Rica), a fully supervised kids’ club for adventurers age four and older, and physical fitness facilities with trainers. Villa Manzu also offers day trips on the recently acquired Hydrosport speedboat “Nimbu,” whisking guests to a variety of gorgeous beaches and diving spots.

Other amenities include laundry service, stocked beverage refrigerators in each suite, babysitting, and a prolific assortment of sports equipment, including

Even with all of that, what ultimately makes Villa Manzu a worthwhile

indulgence are the people behind the scenes, from the chefs and beverage manager/all-around expert Luis Morera to the house staff to managers Chris and Jennifer Cowels. The couple totally gets the importance of creating a special stay tailored to every individual family as parents, outdoor athletes, and 20-year Costa Rica residents.

FLYING FOR LIFE HELINET:

Though we can be aware of life’s inevitable changes, it is nearly impossible to prepare for what may lie on the other side of tomorrow. For some of us, the notion that the “blink of an eye” is all that it takes for our worlds to flip upside down has proven to be quite true. Kathryn Purwin is a woman who experienced this firsthand. However, following the sudden passing of her husband, Alan Purwin, Kathryn knew how important it was for her to step into the role of CEO in order to carry out the vision and mission her husband had started.

Helinet Aviation Services is a multifaceted company that provides

helicopter services for an array of businesses and partnerships. Their ventures range from personal, VIP and business chartering services, to providing TV and Film studios with aerial footage for production purposes. They have partnered with news broadcasters such as ABC, KABC, KCBS/KCAL, KTTV and KMEX, playing a part in bringing high quality news and story coverage to all of us. Helinet also provides helicopter transportation to the vital organ transport programs for major hospitals in the greater Los Angeles region, flying over 900 organs for transplants last year. Helinet’s resume includes working with some of Hollywood’s biggest directors, producers and production

companies; CEO Kathryn Purwin has even partnered with Brown and Firehawk Helicopters to bring the first UH-60 Black Hawk to be utilized for production purposes in Los Angeles. Whether it be through the use of helicopters or drones, Helinet’s production team has all the bases covered for the “Big Screen” needs.

With a fleet of 18 helicopters, creating the largest fleet of twinengine helicopters in all of Southern California, and 14 drones, it is no wonder that Helinet has managed to give their wide variety of clientele top notch service and value. Yet, without a doubt, Helinet’s most significant contribution comes from their exclusive Helicopter partnership

with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). This partnership mainly revolves around transportation services. For example, if a family is at a smaller hospital that is unable to give the proper care or resources needed by a young patient, Helinet steps up to transport the child to CHLA. The Helinet/CHLA partnership began when CHLA’s emergency services operations manager approached Helinet founder Alan Purwin. The hospital – which draws patients from across Southern California and beyond — was interested in starting a regional helicopter transport program but unable to shoulder the financial commitment necessary to develop and maintain the service. With an average of nearly 500 yearly transports, and over 10,000 since the program started, Helinet’s efficient and caring service grants Children’s Hospital patients and their families some comfort and ease so that they may focus their energies and efforts on their loved ones. “For the last 20 years there is always someone onsite ready to launch at a moment’s notice, at no cost to the

hospital or the patients and their families. It’s a wonderful program,” Kathryn Purwin explains.

Among Helinet’s 36 pilots, four of them provide 24 hour, round-the-clock services for Children’s Hospital. “There is always someone on site, ready to launch whenever the call comes in,” Purwin says. Though the partnership had it start in 1998 with one helicopter, Helinet acquired a second one for CHLA in 2011. When asked how often both helicopters are out on a call at the same time, Purwin says, “It’s not every day that it happens, but it’s definitely not rare.”

While the loss of Alan Purwin was a tragedy deeply felt by the entire Helinet team, as well as many more, the lives that he touched with his charisma, vision and generosity endure. Following his passing, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles decided to honor Alan by renaming

their transport program after him; it’s now “The Alan Purwin Emergency Transport Program.” Also, CHLA’s helipad has been named after the entire Purwin Family as well as Helinet Aviation, with an official ribbon cutting ceremony thrown on May 1st of 2019.

In addition to Kathryn carrying on Alan’s legacy, each member at Helinet plays a vital role in maintaining the safe, efficient and reliable service he always sought to provide. When asked what inspired her to become a part of the Helinet family, Allison Rakun, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Business Development, says “Aviation was very different for me being that I came from an Entertainment background, but when I came here I just became enamored with it. The dynamic aspects of the company really enticed me, and Alan played a big part in highlighting the excitement and inspiration that drew me toward working here.”

A pilot herself, Kathryn Purwin is passionate about having

more females in the aviation business. As the company’s CEO, Kathryn now oversees a staff of over 85 people, many of whom are women. Yet, when it comes to actual piloting of the helicopters, men still make up the majority of the field. “Unfortunately, the numbers just aren’t really there. When I started flying, only 5% of pilots were female and to this day the number hasn’t increased much. However, we currently have four female pilots at Helinet and they are all amazing,” Purwin says. Asked if she plans to return to the pilot’s seat anytime soon, Kathryn replies, “I really feel that if you don’t do it consistently, you shouldn’t do it at all.”

From the countless families they have transported and assisted, VIP charters they have completed, broadcast partnerships they have maintained, to the box office hits they have played a role in producing, Helinet is sure to satisfy any and all needs possible when it comes to the world of helicopters, all while honoring their founder, Alan Purwin, every step of the way.

TATA GOES NUTS!

In the spring of 2017 a tiny baby squirrel fell out of her nest and into a whole world of craziness. After unsuccessful atempts to return "Tata" to her natural home, Alejandro & Belén Salomon, of Hidden Hills, adopted her as their own. While loved by all, there is no one who dotes more over this cuddly critter than Alejandro, and Tata certainly believes he is her dad, often leaping (flying) across the room to him when he comes home.

Tata is also quite the influencer, having amassed more than 100,000 loyal followers on instagram. @tatagoesnuts.
