WRITTEN BY ALLIE LEBOS PORTRAIT: GRACIE BELLISSIMO Comfortably

For many women, a love of shoes can be traced all the way back to early childhood. With her glass slippers that seemed to be the highlight of her entire ensemble, Cinderella set the standard. However, being that glass was likely not the most flexible of materials, she also set the standard for what women should expect in regard to comfort. For decades, shoe-lovers of all kinds have been presented with countless options in style and beauty. Yet, the designers of those shoes have often left out one incredibly important component -- the safety and well-being of the consumer’s feet. Thankfully, one designer intends to challenge and transform this outdated and dismissive norm.

Jaclyn Jones is a designer and business woman from Hidden Hills. Though she currently resides in the Palisades, her mother and sister remain Hidden Hills locals. From creating her own shoe line, Jaclyn Jones USA, to recently taking over and running the footwear factory, Clover and Cobbler, Jaclyn is a busy woman to say the least. However, throughout all of her tasks and todo’s she has maintained her priorities of comfort and sustainability within her brand. After learning the ins and outs of the shoe business, Jaclyn realized she was “sick of the standard.” She decided to branch out, take a leap of faith, and create her own company.

I WANTED TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO MAKE THESE KINDS OF SHOES MORE COMFORTABLE . . . AND IT WAS A STRUGGLE.

figure out how to make these kinds of shoes more comfortable . . . and it was a struggle.” While on her search for the key to comfortable shoes, Jaclyn hit a few roadblocks. “I noticed that almost everyone did everything the same way and no one had much interest in change,” recounts Jaclyn. That wasn’t until she met a female insole-maker who was willing to go the extra mile and make Jaclyn’s vision come true. Through adding extra foam to the insole, the comfort of the shoe is heightened immensely, providing cushion and support while walking and standing. After partnering and securing this vendor, Jaclyn began designing her shoes with 4 mm. thick foam insoles, compared to the 1 mm. of foam used by most other high-end, luxury brands..

“I could clearly see there was something lacking in the market. The majority of these luxury shoe designers are men, and many of the shoes these brands offer are beautiful but they’ll break your feet,” explains Jaclyn. “So, I wanted to

Having found this rarely-used solution, Jaclyn knew she had discovered her footing. Being that she was a young woman attempting to start a female-led brand in a male-dominated field, she knew she needed to push through, find new vendors, and most importantly, secure a factory. “I wanted a factory that made everything in-house and I wanted one that was based in the US,” Jaclyn explains. While on her search for the perfect spot, she met with a consultant who introduced her to a beautiful and local factory in Van Nuys. “One thing that really stuck out to me was the fact that many of the artisans have been at this factory for nearly 30 years. The employees really are like family,” says Jaclyn. Upon securing a factory for manufacturing, Jaclyn Jones USA was officially born in 2017.

All shoes at Jaclyn Jones USA adhere to a specific standard to ensure the designs are up to par. In addition to being completely handmade with care and precision in the USA, all shoes undergo extensive weartests by the women of Jaclyn Jones to confirm that each pair looks and feels great. Because Jaclyn Jones USA is also a luxury brand, luxury is taken to a new level with exclusivity of each shoe. Only 18 pairs (or fewer)

are created of any given style, giving a unique edge to every purchase. On the bottom of each shoe you will find a number, signifying which pair is yours out of the few created. Quality over quantity reigns.

After launching her brand and pairing with the factory for about two years, Jaclyn was then approached to take her responsibilities as a business woman and creative designer even

BECAUSE JACLYN JONES USA IS ALSO A LUXURY BRAND, LUXURY IS TAKEN TO A NEW LEVEL WITH EXCLUSIVITY OF

further: she was asked to take over the entire factory and its manufacturers. “After much deliberation and reviewing of the business side, I decided to do it,” explains Jaclyn. Now known as Cobbler and Clover, the 2000 sq. ft. factory currently has 25 employees. The factory has two in-house brands, one being Jaclyn Jones USA and the other, Salpy, another artisan shoe line that is rooted in “comfort and quality.” In addition to these two in-house brands, Clover and Cobbler also works with new,

emerging designers and other brands that are in need of manufacturing. Though the majority of shoes created are handmade, the factory also has the technology to generate more large volume production, giving Clover and Cobbler a leg-up in diversity. In addition, sustainability is valued with the factory being very “green” in its protocol, such as recycling leather straps for future use, as well as making the heels of most shoes with wood rather than plastic.

NOW KNOWN AS COBBLER AND CLOVER, THE 2000 SQ. FT. FACTORY CURRENTLY HAS 25 EMPLOYEES. THE FACTORY HAS TWO INHOUSE BRANDS, ONE BEING JACLYN JONES USA AND THE OTHER, SALPY, ANOTHER ARTISAN SHOE LINE THAT IS ROOTED IN COMFORT AND QUALITY.

SUSTAINABILITY IS VALUED WITH THE FACTORY BEING VERY “GREEN” IN ITS PROTOCOL...

“My vision for the factory was one that housed collaboration and promoted a creative environment. Clover and Cobbler absolutely fulfills that vision,” Jaclyn says. According to her employees, Jaclyn herself also contributes endlessly to this thriving work environment. “Working with Jaclyn has been incredible. She’s fearless in all of her aspirations and she sees every new challenge as an opportunity. She is a great leader and that is why she was approached to take over the factory. Her creativity and tenacity as a business woman really shine through,” says Shelby Houston, Brand Strategist at Jaclyn Jones USA.

According to Jaclyn, growing up in Hidden Hills assisted with the inspiration and knowledge behind the notion that quality, in the case of shoes, should always trump quantity. When it comes to the most rewarding aspect of creating her own brand, Jaclyn says, “For me it’s really when women

express how comfortable the shoes are. Their reaction and gratitude toward being provided with a shoe that not only looks beautiful but actually feels good is beyond rewarding.” In addition, Jaclyn Jones has truly opened up the market for women, showing that is possible through working with other female vendors, suppliers and business owners, and being able to relate to them. Jaclyn’s thoughts on the importance of this can be summed up in two words, “Girl power.”

Something SMILE about to

Long-time Hidden Hills resident and a plastic surgeon of over 40 years, Dr. Labib Samarrai stands in his front yard on a recent afternoon welcoming a visitor to his home. A koi pond meanders along the front of the house and slides underneath the glass portion of the front steps. His daughter, Farah, and wife, Dr. Marie McCombs, a radiologist at UCLA, greet the visitor at the front door with kind smiles. Bright color and warmth are the first things evident inside their home. Dr. Samarrai seats his guest first and then he and the family sit too. His courtly manner and gentle eyes make it easy to understand the “why” of why he

is not only a full time surgeon at Kaiser Permanente in Woodland Hills, but also why two-to-four times a year he travels with Operation Smile (OS), an international medical charity that works with groups of medical volunteers to repair children’s cleft lips and palates, to donate his skills and time as a plastic surgeon.

“Call me Labib,” he says as he begins to share his story. He finished medical school in Iraq and came to the United States for his residency in plastic surgery. There he met Marie while she was in medical school and he was a resident. They married and both began their medical careers. He wanted to give back; to share

his time and expertise with others in need. He volunteered in Iraq and Jordan, as well as taught there. “Give a man a fish you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime,” quotes Labib. “This is my belief and why teaching, in conjunction with volunteering, is important to me.”

In 1993, Operation Smile approached Labib to ask if he would volunteer in their organization. Operation Smile, founded in 1982 by Dr. William (Bill) P. Magee Jr., a plastic surgeon, and his wife, Kathleen (Kathy), a nurse and clinical social worker, with the goal of repairing children’s cleft lips and palates, is funded through monetary donations and volunteers’ skills and time. Both Labib and Marie believe OS offers important, life-changing operations to children who otherwise would have to go through life unassisted with their facial deformities.

One of Labib’s first “missions” with the organization was in Kenya. The travel is usually for a week and includes a volunteer team of about 40 nurses, doctors and technicians. A hospital where the doctors will operate in is found and a makeshift shelter is set up in an adjoining warehouse or building for the children’s parents. Operation Smile brings all the supplies, drugs and instruments. They also often donate what is not used during the surgeries to the local hospital. All services provided by OS are performed completely free of charge.

The parents and their children travel from impoverished, rural villages, usually far distances, which makes the temporary housing more important as the parents do not have the resources to stay in hotels. OS supplies food, water and shelter to the potential patients and their families. Labib arrives with the other team members three-

to-four days ahead to help screen the children for fitness to have surgery. Around 300 people show up, and although every child is seen, the doctors can only operate on 100 to 150 children on each mission.

At this, Labib stops a moment, bows his head and says, “I wish we could operate on every person who arrives at the hospital.”

The potential patients are ranked in priority levels of numbers one through five. The number one priority is a child with a cleft lip, the number two priority is every child with a cleft palate up to the age of 8. “The parents are so

trusting,” Labib says. “They hand you their child with such hope and trust...”

Labib works with local doctors on the missions to train them to perform the surgeries so the process can continue after OS leaves the country. Marie and Farah often travel with Labib on these missions, helping wherever necessary. Farah has made balloon animals for the children and helped with paperwork throughout her childhood and now adulthood.

Kaiser makes it possible for Labib to volunteer on these missions. If he needs the time off to travel to the countries, he receives it without question. OS has operated in the Philippines, Ethiopia, Morocco and many other countries.

MARIE AND FARAH OFTEN TRAVEL WITH LABIB ON THESE MISSIONS, HELPING WHEREVER NECESSARY.

Labib was in the Philippines performing surgeries this past July and it is obvious that he will continue to volunteer as long as he is able.

The family moved to Hidden Hills almost 15 years ago and value the pastoral community. Marie, an artist as well as a doctor, often paints overlooking the hills. Recently married in the backyard of the family home, Farah earned her master’s degree in mental health and is halfway through her 3,000 post-grad hours needed

to be fully licensed. She works at the Valley Family Center in the San Fernando Valley, a non-profit counseling and educational service center. Labib has volunteered on over 35 missions for Operation Smile and although he has only been home for one week as I write this, he is eager to help on another mission. “It is important to give to others,” he says as he looks at his family. “… Our family is lucky to live as we do, and we want to continue to share our time and skills helping others.”

With a shared love of all things Hidden Hills and a healthy lifestyle, two sisters, Jenny Ostrow and Melissa Wallace, launched Hidden Hills General Store (HHGS), a pop-up store, in Melissa’s midcentury original barn. Their goal: create and supply monthly wellness events for Hidden Hills residents and friends while selling, by appointment and event only,"...a combination of [their] HHGS brand of

clothing and goods, wellness products, a mix of curated vintage finds, and some very selective jewelry and accessories.” Their first event, a goat yoga class sold out and brought all ages of men, women and children together.

The dynamic class led by owner and founder of YoGoat LA, Eli Bahar, allowed people to experience

firsthand the benefit of working out with animals. Over 50 Hidden Hills residents and friends filled the front lawn of Melissa’s home as they practiced yoga while Nigerian Dwarf Goats frolicked around, on top of and under the participants. Laughter punctuated the jazzy music played by the yoga instructor while goats used the backs of class members as climbing toys. “Goat wranglers” walked through the mats and

asked individuals first before guiding the goats onto shoulders and even into arms for a gentle goat hug. Another “wrangler” used a spray bottle to cool down the guests, human and animal. The class included a “circle of love” where everyone placed a hand on each other’s back and went into “airplane pose.” It ended with each participant shoulder to shoulder on hands and knees as the goats sprinted atop their backs, bringing smiles and cheers. These unusual and exhilarating opportunities are what the sisters want to share with the community.

Their careers have always been about creativity and art. Melissa is a renowned interior designer and Jenny worked in fashion for over 25 years. Both lived in the city but craved a more “laid back lifestyle filled with horse trails and open spaces.” They found it and more when they moved to Hidden Hills. Now, they want to share with others the magical experience of living amongst nature.

Jenny says, “my sister and I are neighbors and the idea of HHGS grew organically from our love of...a mindful

lifestyle. The ideal location provides a natural backdrop to our brand, an experience as well as a gathering spot to shop and host monthly wellness events.” Melissa’s barn, which is the original structure with only a basic clean-up on the inside, is also home to 15 rescue farm animals that shoppers enjoy as they view the items for sale. The sisters want the shopping and monthly events to be an “experience” where people walk the open-air barn and grounds surrounded by nature. In this bucolic environment, they will encounter new adventures while taking a pause from their normal routines.

“A lot of people crave community and want to connect with others...and the events and shopping offer people the perfect opportunity to be together,”

says Jenny. There is no better place to shop than in a rural rustic barn surrounded by horses, pigs, goats and new human friends. The pop-up store is not altogether about the purchase, but about walking away with a ‘feeling.’” Jenny wants people to feel as if they have gone on a magical field trip, an outing where they try something fresh and different.

The upcoming monthly hosted activities fulfill their desire to share “wellness opportunities” . with the community. Future events will consist of a sound bath, a motivational speaker, a nutritionist and more. Melissa and Jenny hope people continue to “feed off the energy and ideas of others,” .all

while embraced by the Shangri-La that is Hidden Hills.

The recent goat yoga class took advantage of the outdoors, “mindful”. experience. Strangers talked with strangers. People shopped in the barn before and after class in their comfortable workout clothes. Tall, lush trees offered leafy shade and breezes.

Most importantly, people lingered. No one hurried to their cars as class ended. No one tucked their chin into their neck as they scanned their phone for missed messages. Instead, with wide smiles, people stretched on their mats, strolled through the grass, and chatted about the day. Jenny and Melissa more than succeeded in creating a “baaamaste” experience for each participant.

TRAINING WITH

GARBOSA

When I first met Garbosa, she was standing in the back corner of her stall on high alert. She

wouldn’t allow anyone to approach her and in fact would stay as far away as possible from anyone who entered her stall. The first person to start spending time with her was her new owner, my friend and fellow

equestrian, Alexa Chappellet Flagler. She would go into the horse’s stall and just sit in the corner and try to get Garbosa to feel comfortable around a new person. After many hours sitting with Garbosa, Alexa was finally able

to get close to her and began handling her. From that point, Alexa offered me the opportunity to start working with Garbosa and I was thrilled; not only was this horse beyond beautiful, she also had a compelling character.

During the first few times I worked with her, I could see the curiosity in her eyes. She was interested in what I was asking her to do despite being afraid. I soon began to realize that as much as I was training her, she was training me. I’ve worked with horses throughout my life, but Garbosa has required more patience and understanding than any horse I’ve

worked with thus far. At first, the biggest challenge I had was simply to touch her. She would flinch every time I would lay my hand on her, and if I rubbed her too quickly she would get extremely tense.

A few weeks later, our first breakthrough came while doing some groundwork in the arena. I was focusing on desensitizing her to my touch and to the lead rope, and also having her move around me in a circle at different speeds in each direction and stopping on cue. She was doing quite well, so I decided to take off her halter and let her have some free time in the arena. As soon as

the halter came off her head, she went trotting around the arena but stayed in the half that I was in. I noticed that her attention was totally on me, so I asked her to move through each gait, walk, trot and canter. Then I shifted my body and asked her to halt, which she did immediately, and to top it off she took a few strides towards me. That was the first moment I felt I had earned her trust. Although not each day with Garbosa has been easy, after over a month of solely ground work and desensitizing to a halter and lead rope, I introduced her to the saddle blanket, something she had never seen before and was absolutely

terrified of. She wouldn’t let me get anywhere near her with the blanket in my hands, and if the blanket made any move at all she would try to bolt away. Hours of her pulling me around the arena trying to escape every chance she got, I eventually gave up. I hated quitting when we hadn’t made any progress, but it was clear in that moment that she was holding on to so

much fear, continuing to try with the blanket wouldn’t have done any good, so I took her back to the barn, rinsed her off and put her away. I was sitting by myself and realized that being frustrated with her was pointless and unnecessary; any feelings of annoyance needed to be replaced with tolerance and appreciation for

I SOON BEGAN TO REALIZE THAT AS MUCH AS I WAS TRAINING HER, SHE WAS TRAINING ME.

the effort she was already giving me. I became a better listener that day. A few more weeks went by and I persisted with the desensitizing and groundwork. I then noticed her relaxing during the work more and more. It became easier to approach and pet her. I even found a spot on her back where she loved being scratched. It was almost hard to believe but Garbosa started really to enjoy attention and wanted to be scratched and cuddled. After a day of positive work, I was hanging out with her in the stall and started jumping by her sides, acting like I was going to

jump on her back. She stood totally still and instead of fear in her eyes, I saw curiosity. She wasn’t sure what I was doing but she wasn’t afraid. So for the first time ever, I jumped on her back, and I think I had more nerves than she did. Sitting on her back for the first time was one of the most incredible feelings. She was quite relaxed peeking over her shoulder at me and was dropping her head and licking her lips. I was grinning from ear to ear. I was so proud of her.

Garbosa has absolutely changed my life. She has inspired me to persevere despite

our challenges. She has made me a more patient trainer; more attune to what my horse is trying to communicate. We are at the beginning of what will be a long road of difficulties and victories, but I’m so excited to be on that road with Garbosa. I am beyond fortunate to work with this horse, but it wouldn’t be at all possible without the love and advocacy of Alexa and the support of Oak Hill. I have the deepest appreciation for all who have helped Garbosa and me along the way.

VINTAGE 2TRAILERS

Back at the turn of the last century when cars were invented, the notion of freedom expanded far beyond what people knew. Fourwheeled contraptions opened the way for the building of roads, gas stations, hotels, restaurants and more. People began to see the world beyond their own backyard.

But before that, it was a buggy ride, a horse gallop or a stagecoach journey. Time was very slow.

Cars pushed the boundaries beyond what anyone expected. And then, in the twenties, certain people got the idea of actually taking their homes with them on their journeys.

It wasn’t enough to drive with limited means. What if you had five kids? What if you had a journey that required more than what could fit in your car? What if you wanted to stay where there was no hotel?

All of these questions were answered in 1927 when a certain Mr. Holt of Western Pennsylvania started building a travel trailer in his barn.

Travel trailers at this time were not too common. Wally Byam would not build his first Airstream Trailer until 9 years later. But AutoCamping was becoming extremely popular. A pastime where Americans would take their Model T or some other early car and head out to the wilderness to pitch a tent near their vehicle or fashion canvas and poles and build a room off the side of their car. It was a very cool time.

Even Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Harvey Firestone and President Harding loved AutoCamping and would do it together often, long before the paparazzi were commonplace.

60 Hidden Hills Magazine | Fall 2019

But Mr. Holt wanted to build something a little more luxurious. Using the contemporary rail parlor cars of the day as a design template, he started out to build his trailer as a version of a fancy railroad car.

According to David Neel of the Murphy Auto Museum where the first and original 1927 Holt Trailer calls its home, “It was an occasional project that Mr. Holt would work on from time to time but by late 1929, the Great Depression hit and he was not able to completely finish his trailer . .

. and then other projects and things in life took precedent and the trailer was never used for its intended purpose. In fact, his grandchildren remember using the trailer as a playhouse in the 1960s.” So, it was basically built in 1927...and then never used.

The trailer sat in that barn from 1927 until the early 2000s when the family property was being sold.

Enter Vintage Trailer enthusiasts Steve and Jenay Katkowsky from Santa Cruz, CA. These peeps were

traveling through the area and saw the trailer. Striking up a conversation with the family and after a little bargaining, they took it home with them to California.

The Katkowskys spent the next few years restoring the trailer to its original beauty, complete with rear balcony, period correct furnishings and beautiful fittings. It was on display in the Katkowsky’s Trailer Museum for many years and even was on loan to The Petersen a few years ago for a travel exhibit.

THIS RARE AND UNIQUE PIECE OF AMERICANA IS A TRIBUTE TO THE EARLY DAYS OF TRAVEL TRAILERS AND IS BELIEVED TO BE THE OLDEST TRAILER IN EXISTENCE THAT HAS NEVER BEEN USED.
USING THE CONTEMPORARY RAIL PARLOR CARS OF THE DAY AS A DESIGN TEMPLATE, HE STARTED OUT TO BUILD HIS TRAILER AS A VERSION OF A FANCY RAILROAD CAR.

THE BOLES AERO WAS A BUILDER OF ALUMINUM TRAVEL TRAILERS WITH THEIR MANUFACTURING HEADQUARTERED IN BURBANK, CA. IT MADE SENSE THAT THE COMPANY WOULD BE HEADQUARTERED THERE AS DON BOLES, THE FOUNDER, WORKED FOR LOCKHEED IN THE EARLY 1940 s

IF YOU HAPPEN TO BE CAMPING AND RUN OUT OF...AH HEM, TOILET PAPER, THEN YOU’D HAVE A BIG SMILE ON YOUR FACE WHEN THE BOLES ROLLED INTO THE CAMPSITE.

In early 2019, the Katkowskys donated the trailer to David at The Murphy Auto Museum in Oxnard. It is now on permanent display inside The Murphy for everyone to enjoy and is about to get a spot in their all-new facility.

This rare and unique piece of Americana is a tribute to the early days of travel trailers and is believed to be the oldest trailer in existence that has never been used.

It was common back in that day to call it a Travel Trailer, but these days, if you’re in to traveling with something old and restored, then the key word is “Vintage.” A small box that hearkens back to a day that most of us never experienced. Much like a movie prop, Vintage Trailers are time-capsules that extract tiny moments in our history and exemplify peace and the joy of the open road. You could go anywhere.

But then that begs the question...What if you forgot something? There were no Walmarts, Targets or Drugstores in the Forests. Well then, I’m glad you asked.

Enter our second unique time-capsule trailer... the 1952 Boles Aero.

The Boles Aero was a builder of aluminum travel trailers with their manufacturing headquartered in Burbank, CA. It made sense that the company would be headquartered there as Don Boles, the founder, worked for Lockheed in the early 1940s and learned how to work with all aspects of aluminum fabrication; cutting, riveting, polishing and assembling. And after World War II, Boles decided to satisfy America’s pent up demand of wanderlust. So, in 1946, his first year of business, Boles sold 300 trailers!

This particular model Boles is called a “Montecito” and is a very unique trailer. If you happen to be camping and run out of...ah hem, toilet paper, then you’d have a big smile on your face when the Boles rolled into the campsite.

Many 25’ foot Boles at the time were repurposed as Mobile Sporting Goods Stores.

Inside this flawless example trailer is a collection of original and well-preserved camping necessities: fishing lures, shotgun shells, stove and lantern fuel, batteries, clothing, even cigarettes and sunglasses! And of course,

toilet paper. A sporting goods store on wheels.

As it sits now at the private Malamut Auto Museum in Thousand Oaks, its contents are filled with period correct items that can only be described as a 1950s Travel Trailer Folk’s delight. Everything you’d ever need to make your camping adventure perfect. If you can think it, it’s got it.

This rare and unique trailer is the last and only one known to exist now and is on display inside the Malamut. But don’t head right on over as it’s a private museum and requires an appointment.

Although Trailer Life back in the day was about discovery, today’s Vintage Trailer Life is far more rewarding. Not only is it about exploring our world, it’s about connecting ourselves with a time where the gift of travel was embodied in the present moment. In connection with us merging ourselves with nature today, we are forced to ponder what life was like at a time when people knew what it was like to not have these things.

I’ve grown up with planes, trains, cars, scooters and all things tech. But

there was a time when horses were it. Then a buck board, a stagecoach or walking was the way of the world.

Time was slower, more peaceful.

Vintage Trailer blew the lid off and the elation must have been grand. So, the next time you see a Vintage Trailer on the road, whether an Airstream, Shasta, Canned Ham or TrailerBoat, just give it a smile. Know there are people still in the world connecting themselves to something greater.

Let that inspire you to do the same. And the more you fill your life with those thoughts and ideas, the more you experience what life...as nature, the sun, the ocean and the animals... really are—a gift from the heavens. And it’s all free to those who wish to explore and see it. Who wouldn’t want to do that?

68 Hidden Hills Magazine | Fall 2019

Hidden Hills is arguably one of the most unique places to live in Southern California. Not only because of its distinct sense of community and history, but also because of its diversity of homes. Ranging from “original ranches” built in the late 1950’s to the recent emergence of new houses priced in the eight-figures, Hidden Hills has seen an evolution in how it is defined in the world of Real Estate. Few Real Estate agents have been more directly connected to this ever-changing dynamic than Michael Bloom.

While Bloom may be considered the “new kid in town,” as realtors go, he one Hidden Hills’ longest-residing community members. With Bloom and his extended family living in the community for more than 4 decades, it is probably safe to say that there are no other real estate agents that know Hidden Hills better. While he worked as a licensed agent in the 90’s, selling homes in the Hollywood Hills (one of which included Charlie Chaplin’s historic estate on Alpine Drive in Beverly Hills), Bloom spent the majority of his career running the family business. Recently though, having been always current on the homes being bought and sold in the area, he recognized that there was a level of service missing in today’s market that was once considered to be the standard. “There are a few large players in the area who have in

a sense institutionalized the process here,” says Bloom. “While all good people and well respected, there has been a growing disconnect with these large agencies between the quest for the next ‘high ticket listing’ and what this community is truly about.”

So, Bloom set out to change things. He teamed up with 30-year local real estate veteran, Matthew Schroeder with the goal of offering that level of one-on-one service and deep knowledge of the area that has all but vanished. “No one is going to get lost in the shuffle here,” says Bloom. “I won’t show up to sign you up and then move on to the next person. As my client you are of my top priorities and you will always be dealing with me directly—from the moment we shake hands until escrow closes.”

Driven to support this professional philosophy and to establish himself as the “person-to-person” leader in representing both buyers and sellers, Bloom believes every home is in the community is important, regardless of the size or perceived stature. “Every home here has a story and every street has a history,” says Bloom. “As someone who was raised here, I truly believe that these stories should be told. By doing this I know I can instill in every family that discovers this wonderful community that sense of pride and community that has always defined Hidden Hills.”

conejo HARDWOODS

CONEJO HARDWOODS PRIDES THEMSELVES ON THEIR ABILITY TO ELEVATE YOUR SPACE TO THE NEXT LEVEL

Walking into Conejo Hardwoods is a sensual experience— the aroma of fresh cut woods permeates the air and an earnest sense of authenticity is undeniable— there is an intangible awareness of the tradition that has grown organically from this familyfounded business’s humble beginnings, which date back nearly 40 years. ATRIUM

AN ELEVATED CANNABIS EXPERIENCE

With the legalization of recreational cannabis in California came a challenge for the “budding” industry—for generations cannabis had been aligned with stereotypes that equated its patrons with a somewhat seedy counter-culture— and the initial influx of countless storefront dispensaries that sprung forth from this change didn’t do much to undue these preconceptions. For the everyday citizen, embracing this

new legitimacy and enjoying the pleasures and benefits of cannabis somehow didn’t feel like walking into a purveyor of fine wines and spirits, as it should feel. Shopping for and buying cannabis was still clouded with a tinge of naughtiness.

Those days, however, are now officially “up in smoke” and Atrium on Topanga Canyon Boulevard, just south of the 101 freeway, is the most shining and respectful example of how shopping for cannabis is

not only done right, but also of how it can be an elevated and enlightening experience.

Walking into Atrium feels more like stepping into an Apple store. You are greeted in the front lobby by warmly welcoming receptionists and, once checked-in, directed to a personal concierge of sorts who takes the time to learn about what you are looking for. Their demeanor is such that any sense of quasi-shame one might have at

that moment is instantly “vaporized” and you are led into the open and sunlit world (created by renowned retail designer, Julia Wong) that proves Atrium is aptly named. It is an experience of countless, colorfully branded options, each with their own lineage and purpose, tucked away meticulously into Tiffany and Co-like display cases. Your associate is able to expertly speak to the features of every possible choice as hi-def monitors cycle through

the gleaming menu of brands like Bloom Farms, King’s Garden, and even one of Atrium’s own in-house brands, “Hidden Hills.”

Almost as eclectic as the spectrum of brands are the various options of how to partake; Flowers, vaporizers, concentrates, tinctures, oils and edibles are all part of the assortment, and it becomes clear that every one of them carries a distinct potency, timing of effect and experience.

At the end of it all, when a choice and purchase is made, it is done with a level of trust and confidence that makes the guest actually feel good and responsible about their decisions. It may even be a euphoric feeling of stepping into and embracing a broader world of enjoyment and proven benefits that had for far too long been labeled taboo.

ABOUT FIG & SPRIG

With a focus on local, seasonal produce and sustainable cuisine, this charming spot offers sandwiches, salads and entrées, including a deli case and complete meals to go. Newly opened in the former location of The Blue Table, Calabasas, this, quaint California farm-to-table restaurant and delicatessen is owned by husband and wife team Francesco Pesce & Claudine Bernard. Here's a bit from them!

How does it feel being back in the region after years of having the successful Cafe 14 in Agoura?

It feels great to be back. I missed getting to cook for people! I’m always humbled when customers come in and tell me how much they loved Cafe 14. It makes you feel like you made a difference, and that’s a wonderful thing.

How are you sourcing and finding local and organic foods?

We’re getting to the farmers market as much as we can. Luckily, we have farmers that deliver, which really helps when we run out of food in the middle of the week!

What does "farm to table" mean to you?

Farm to Table means getting back to the basics as human beings. Our world moves too fast, so fast that a tomato or cantaloupe isn’t allowed to stay on the vine long enough to ripen. We need to slow down and pay attention to where our food comes from and absolutely support local farms.

What do you think will make Fig and Sprig most appealing to patrons?

We believe more and more people are aware of the benefits of eating healthier food made with quality ingredients. And that’s what we’re doing! We need more thoughtful restaurants and fewer chains. People come in and tell us they feel like they’ve gone back in time, and we think that’s really cool.

What are you looking forward to most about the new location?

Getting to know people, which for us is a uniquely personal experience. We want to be part of our community and get to know our customers on a first name basis, including their children, their parents, and even their pets.

INGREDIENTS

This cocktail is our rendition of a classic Old Fashioned and a great example of our mission statement at Oak & Iron. We begin by following the classic recipe of an Old Fashioned (base spirit, bitters, and sugar) and then we design our own unique twist around it.

This cocktail is specific to its original recipe thanks to our introduction of oleo sacrum, an ingredient first written about in 1670 for its use in punches and then introduced into cocktails in 1827 in a book called Oxford Night Caps by Richard Cook. Keeping true to the great cocktail bars of the past, we make all of our ingredients, like oleo sacrum and clarified juices, in house. We also use Buffalo Trace Bourbon because it’s one of the oldest distilleries in America. The smoke-filled finish imparts its own flavors and aromas, allows the guest to interact with our bartenders, and serves as a wonderful theatrical experience to that particular customer and to the entire bar.

3 oz of 4-month barrel-aged Buffalo Trace
1/2 oz Blood Orange Oleo
3 dashes of house bitters

This cocktail was inspired by the wonderful honeybees that supply us with not only honey but also other bee-based ingredients that we use at the bar as well, much of which is sourced directly from our co-owner Jared Logan’s home farm. I decided to utilize every piece of the beehive in this cocktail, completing the circle. I also care about ensuring that everyone can experience a cocktail regardless of what’s in it, and this cocktail achieves that goal. As an example, some people are wary of a Whiskey Sour because it uses egg whites, but with the wax washed bourbon you get that silky texture in the cocktail that you would typically see with egg whites – yet, there are none in this cocktail.

• Rosemary smoked glass

• 2 oz Whistlepig Farmstock Rye 2

• 1 oz Clarified Lemon Juice

• 1 oz Clarified Grapefruit

• 1/2 oz Clarified Ginger Juice

• 3/4 oz Shiso Leaf Honey

This cocktail is a summer rendition of one of my favorite cocktails, thanks to the brightness of our clarified juices. Classically it would have a Scotch float but I wanted to impart a more herbaceous smoke than the peaty smoke derived from Scotch. By using Rosemary to smoke the glass, the end result is a much calmer take on this particular cocktail.

LAST WORD

This cocktail has become one of our favorites behind the bar for its complexity, and one of the most visually stunning because of its vibrant green color. I enjoy making these classic cocktails with ingredients that aren’t usually utilized. This one in particular follows a classic recipe while using some lesser-known bottles thanks to our wide-ranging collection of spirits and amaros. It gives us a great range to make something really special for our guests. While we abide by the rules and recipes for each classic cocktail that we recreate – there’s no reason we can’t have a little fun with it, too.

• 1 oz Luis & Clark Gin • 1 oz Clarified Lime Juice • 1 oz Boomsma Cloosterbitter • 1 oz Lazzaroni Maraschino

TUSCANYLoving

For so many of us, Italy is a favorite destination in the world. The country has it all. Simply stated, there is just so much to experience.

Among the “must see” spots is, of course, the Amalfi Coast; it takes one’s breath away. But then too, there’s Tuscany, whose beauty and serenity grab at all of your senses. I’ve been to Florence and Tuscany a

few times, but this time was an extra special “girls’ trip” with my mom and sister. We met up in Florence to take the train to Chiusi, a town in the Siena region of Tuscany. From the train station in Chiusi, we took a 20-minute taxi ride to a tiny village called Castiglioncello del Trinoro, where we pulled up to one of the most magical places in the world . . . Monteverdi Tuscany.

WORDS & PHOTOS BY NICOLE ISAACS

ARRIVING THERE, I LITERALLY THOUGHT I’D LANDED IN A FAIRYTALE -- IT ALMOST DIDN’T SEEM REAL.

Monteverdi is a beautiful boutique hotel perched on a medieval hilltop hamlet overlooking the lush, rolling hills. Arriving there, I literally thought I’d landed in a fairytale -- it almost didn’t seem real. The charming hotel was built from a medieval village centuries ago, maintaining its old century charm, yet fused with a contemporary elegance. I felt so far removed from modern day society, as if I’d been whirled back in time and was floating in a dream. I remember feeling so at peace and relaxed the moment I stepped foot out of that taxi.

It had been raining that afternoon but the skies had cleared by the time we arrived, leaving the air crisp and fresh. Through the still and quiet, we could just hear the soft sounds of birds

chirping. The sun was then peeking out...just in time for a breathtaking sunset. Everywhere I turned looked like a painting!

We stayed in a luxury view suite, designed by a famous Italian artist. It had the most unique bed I’d ever slept in, and the design concept was super cool. The bed itself has been featured in many design outlets and publications. Because the hotel was previously a village, no two rooms are the same, each uniquely designed with a different theme.

One of the highlights during our stay was taking a cooking class with the hotel’s Executive Chef Giancarla Bodoni. It was an intimate class in a gorgeous and immaculate kitchen; its doors open to the Tuscan countryside. Using only

the freshest ingredients from the local region, we learned how to make traditional dishes like handmade ricotta ravioli and pasta with fresh tomato sauce and vegetables. After cooking, we enjoyed our creations with a beautiful lunch outside, taking in picturesque views of Tuscany and some wine. The food was to die for and our handmade pasta melted in your mouth. It was especially fun to do this with my mom and sister, and Giancarla was an amazing host and chef. (You can watch this

whole cooking experience on my Italy highlights on Instagram.)

Aside from our cooking class lunch, we had two dinners and breakfast at Monteverdi. All of the food is delicious. Chef Giancarla takes pride in using only organic and the freshest ingredients. I was particularly blown away by some of the dishes at dinner -- extremely unique flavor combinations and presentations.

Monteverdi is a beautiful escape and the perfect getaway for relaxation. We didn’t leave the property once during our stay (we didn’t need to!). My mom and I treated ourselves to an amazing and much-needed morning spa session together. The spa is absolutely exquisite. And for those of us who travel the long tiring journey to get here, we found this relaxing spa session a perfect way to kick off the vacation and, indeed, just what the doctor ordered.

What I also like about Monteverdi is that it’s an intimate experience. It doesn’t have that “resort” feel packed with guests and hustle bustle all around you. It’s so serene and just gives the impression you are staying in a quaint little village, yet still upscale and luxurious. At times I felt like I had the place all to myself.

Even the hotel pool was always quiet and peaceful. It is a stunning Infinity pool with picturesque views of forests and the hills of Val d’Orcia.

I get tons of questions everyday asking for recommendations on where to stay around the world. Monteverdi Tuscany is one of the most relaxing places I’ve ever been and a great choice to stay at in Tuscany. It will always have a special place in my heart because I got to experience it with my mom. We had only one full day there and two nights, so I hope to return and stay for a longer visit soon to really disconnect and relax to the fullest!

SHELTER TRANSPORT ANIMAL RESCUE TEAM

Small Group Achieving BIG Things For Homeless Animals

In 2011 we had a pipe dream: To find a way to help more animals out of Southern California’s high-kill shelter system and onward to loving, forever homes. A small group of friends in Studio City put their heads together. They knew that Oregon and Washington States were not saturated with the abandoned, neglected and abused 4-leggeds like California was, and a light bulb went off.

Shelter Transport Animal Rescue Team (START), a 501c3, was formed.

Their Goal was simple: (1) Stop unwanted pets being born and ending up in the overcrowded shelter system (by funding spays/neuters for underserved communities);

MEET “THE BEAST”

With so many FURever home miracle stories; START has a bi-monthly newsletter that shares these happy “tails”!

and (2) Transport/Relocate them out of the shelters (to avoid euthanasia) for new beginnings.

Since 2011, START has transported over 11,500 dogs and cats to contracted partners in the Pacific Northwest and has funded over 6,500 spay/neuter surgeries for low-income families.

START’s 38-foot custom retrofitted motorhome, affectionately known as “The Beast,” can transport up to 130 at-risk animals at a time, many of whom are on their last day at the shelter. START’s monthly transports have brought joy to both the 2- and 4-legged kind. People that meet “The Beast” are “changed forever,” as are The Beast’s precious passengers.

START receives no government funding and survives on a few annual grants, along with the generosity of our loyal donors. We invite you to follow our journey and consider supporting our life-saving missions. To learn more about what we do, to sign up for our PAWsome newsletter, and/or to DONATE, please visit us at www.STARTrescue.org
