NOVEL

DETERMINATION

IN 2013 JOHN HEUBUSCH WAS GIVEN A CANCER PROGNOSIS THAT WOULDN’T GET HIM TO CHRISTMAS. SINCE, HE’S CONTINUED TO OVERSEE A PRESIDENTIAL FOUNDATION, WRITTEN A NOVEL AND TRAVELED THE WORLD WITH HIS FAMILY.

Winter 2017/2018 | Hidden Hills Magazine 19

Some people live life in a meandering, roll with it fashion, and then there are people like John Heubusch who takes life into his arms and embraces every joyful moment. Upon meeting him, you wouldn’t guess this was his personality; he’s self-effacing, calm, and apologizes twice for being less than three minutes late. As his vibrant wife, Marcella comes back into the room, his smile widens, his eyes light up and their loving banter gives a clue to the man who works full- time, battles cancer and travels with his family—all while writing a book. Heubusch spent years working in politics, public service and for a Fortune 500 company before he began to work as the Executive Director of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. He, Marcella and their two children, Max (13) and Jordana (10) left their beloved La Jolla home, seven and-a-half years ago so he could take on his new role.

exhibits change every six months and allow people a different experience each time they visit. The Lincoln exhibit, the Titanic exhibit, the Treasures of the Vatican and the upcoming Genghis Khan exhibit enthralls “people from age 6 to 96” Heubusch says.

HEUBUSCH

The foundation also gives away millions of dollars every year in college scholarships and works with teachers to create civic lessons., They host special events that bring in media figures, authors and politicians and one of Heubusch’s favorite activities includes the 26,000 students a year who participate in role-playing the President of the United States and others in the replica of the Oval Office. “It is incredible to watch 5th through 8th graders take on the part of the president or an advisor in a mock, tense situation,” he says.

Leaving political parties and allegiances out of the equation, Heubusch’s work at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation is always growing and changing and he relishes the fact that over 500,000 visitors set foot inside each year—making it the most trafficked presidential library. The special

While he loves his work, he and Marcella did not plan to make their move a permanent one. They didn’t sell their historic, 1920’s home in La Jolla right away. They rented in The Oaks of Calabasas for over five years before finding Hidden Hills, which Heubusch likens to the Virginia horse country where he grew up; a town with no sidewalks and a rural feel. “We were enchanted,” he says, and a year ago, they moved into their forever home in Hidden Hills.

But life hasn’t always been rosy for this upbeat character. On May 15, 2013, Heubusch was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. He and Marcella were told by one doctor to, “Do your Christmas shopping now, because you won’t be here that long.” They opted not to embrace his this suggestion. With an amazing local doctor, Dr. Gary Dosik, who teamed up with the leading specialist in esophageal cancer, Dr. Jaffer Ajani at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Texas, friends, family and strangers, Heubusch is not only alive, but after two clean scans most recently just two weeks ago, he was told that he is in remission. There is no long-term cure yet for this type of cancer, but that won’t stop him from fighting for one.

He’s the guy who took his family to Switzerland just two weeks after finishing chemotherapy. He’s also the person who, although he wrote numerous articles over the years for The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, USA Today and many more, decided he wanted to write a fictional thriller. He bought books on how to write books. But, he never found the time to read them. Instead, he began to write in the evenings, after a full day of work, for four to five hours a night. By chapter eight he decided he might want to figure out where the book was going, so he crafted an outline. Each page surprised him, and with no grand plan, he opted not to over-think the book and to simply write. His book The Shroud Conspiracy, was published by Simon and Schuster and

THE BARN OWL BOX PROGRAM TAKES FLIGHT IN HIDDEN HILLS

While owls represent wisdom and perseverance, barn owls also happen to be skilled hunters who have historically played a role in curbing the rodent population. And while anticoagulant rodenticides were released around Los Angeles County as the population increased,

these poisons had the very unfortunate side effect of knocking out numerous species of wild and domestic animals. One of the hardest hit in our area was the Barn Owl, one of nature’s best weapons against rodent infestation.

In 2014, the organization worked with the LA City Council to

28 Hidden Hills Magazine | Winter 2017/2018

successfully ban “second generation” (high toxicity) rodenticides from being used in all Los Angeles area parks, school zones, playgrounds, and public lands in and around the Santa Monica Mountains. On a statewide level, citizens are being asked to contact California lawmakers and request they support legislation like AB 1687, a bill that would ban all anticoagulant rodenticides in California, except for agricultural use.

To give the barn owl population a new lease on life and restore a most effective, environmentally friendly, and conscientious

form of pest control closer to home, Citizens for Los Angeles Wildlife (CLAW) have gotten residents of the Beverly Glen, Pacific Palisades, Eagle Rock, and Laurel Canyon communities to think inside the box with its Barn Owl Box Program. Now, plans have moved forward to bring the box to other communities in the West Valley, including Hidden Hills.

According to Tony Tucci, Chair of CLAW, residents of communities that have remained rodentcide-free for over three months can invest in the owl populations’ future by making a tax-deductible donation of $200. In return,

they will receive a CLAW-endorsed nesting box- and mounting instructions. Once an owl or family of owls has taken up residence, the box owner will monitor how they are doing and report back to the organization so they can learn how to keep the momentum going with the owl population recovery.

Laura McCorkindale, a music artist manager and author we profiled earlier this year, came across the program when visiting a homeowners association meeting. Prior to that meeting, she hadn’t heard much about barn owls or the approved man-made boxes designed by that have become their homes. However, once she learned about the program and its goals, she started doing research on this and similar programs. She discovered neighborhoods all

over the country are encouraging the boxes as a way to attract the owls, primarily as an alternative to rodent poisons, in which she in turn quickly educated herself.

“I had no idea the rat poisons were so awful for other animals,” McCorkindale said. “The program seemed like a natural fit for our community, so I called the guys from CLAW who confirmed that our rural Hidden Hills environment would be a favorable fit for the program. From there, we started researching how to get this program into place in Hidden Hills, especially because we wanted to be sure barn owls which wouldn’t pose any danger to our neighborhood dogs and cats, and luckily, barn owls are one Wof the species that won’t harm our pets.”

RESEARCHERS RECENTLY TESTED RANDOM SAMPLES OF URBAN CARNIVORES IN THE SANTA MONICA MOUNTAINS. THE RED ILLUSTRATES THE PERCENTAGES OF THOSE ANIMALS THAT CAME UP POSITIVE FOR RAT POISON IN THEIR SYSTEM.

Winter 2017/2018 | Hidden Hills Magazine 31

McCorkindale reports there is a need for a lot of patient households who will diligently follow the instructions to ensure the boxes are installed in proper locations. She believes that in the long run, the program will provide great benefits for both

Hidden Hills and the environment. She adds Malibu has already banned rodentcides. “Other cities are following suit, so it’s just a matter of time,” she said. “If we get enough homes with boxes, it’ll be rewarding to have a fun alternative to poison.”

CLAW CHAIR TONY TUCCI (WITH BARNEY THE BARN OWL) FLANKED BY CO-DIRECTORS SHAWN SILVER (L), AND ALISON SIMARD (R).

Elizabeth Hyer Rose, who also received her first box in November, first learned about the program via CLAW organization and soon after, learned friends of hers in Laurel Canyon were already participating in the program.

“One of the primary reasons why I am excited about the program is that we don’t have to use rodenticide to control the rodent population in our yards and neighborhoods,” Hyer Rose affirms. “Barn owls are part of the natural process of pest control, and there’s something wonderful about our being able to help preserve the natural order of things, especially when we live in a community like Hidden Hills that’s so bucolic. It provides a sense of living in the country even when we live so close to the city.”

Hyer Rose adds that she appreciates the fact that the program will also provide an opportunity to educate people, especially children, about the cycle of life without the detrimental impact of pesticides and industrialization. “I am not a fan of pesticides because not only do they kill rats, but also other animals that come in contact with them such as owls and mountain lions who ingest the rats… basically all the way up the food chain.”

Kate Peris learned about the nesting boxes from her neighbors and animal activists Lonna and Steve Weber. As they were among the first of those working to bring the program to Hidden Hills, she knew right away she wanted to learn more about participating.

“Our whole family will be involved, and I am confident that it is going to be a fun learning experience for all of us,” says Peris. “We have a love of owls in general because they are such special creatures. I am excited about the educational aspect as well as fostering a healthy ecosystem for our community. Ironically, for the first time since we moved here, we are having a rat

problem and we are hoping that our barn owl or owl family will keep a watchful eye over our place.”

It is important to note that barn owls are native to Los Angeles, but have lost much of their habitat loss due to urban development. While they are impressive creatures, ranging between 13-16 inches in length and weighing anywhere from one to 1½ pounds, they are not a threat to cats and small dogs as they stick to their diet of small rodents, including gophers. Just one owl’s presence can benefit Hidden Hills as he can consume as many as 3,000 rodents per year.

According to CLAW, bringing a barn owl nesting box into the neighborhood is not a guarantee that a barn owl will come immediately, or even at all. However, the chances of barn owls taking up residence near your home increases when there is an available food supply, free of toxins, and an appropriately placed nesting box for them to take up residence. Barn owls are native, and will return to the area when they know they can thrive.

Breeding season is estimated to run between March to August, though it now starting earlier in the year due to climate change. Bringing barn owls back into their native habitat is a wonderful way to naturally effect the rodent population in a sustainable, safe, and environmentally sound way. Speaking of sound, barn owls don’t hoot the way great horned owls do. Instead, they release a screech, made mostly by the male. A softer, more wavering purring call may also be heard.

A
PHOTOGRAPHS & SELF-PORTRAITS BY MOISES ARIAS AFTER MORE THAN A DECADE IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA, ACTOR MOISES ARIAS HAS EMERGED AS AN ARTIST FROM EVERY ANGLE.

Moises settles into the kitchen chair across from me, taking a sip from his black coffee. The green, “Rico’s Surf Shop” –t-hirt on his chest sends me straight back to my childhood, but the person wearing it is not the same mischievous, outspoken Hannah Montana character I grew up watching. In fact, his buzz cut, pierced ears, and warm, cordial tone make Moises nearly unrecognizable compared to his former, Disney-star self. Born of Colombian descent, Moises grew up in Georgia with his parents and younger brother, Mateo. Upon moving to LA in 2006, ten year-old Moises did not expect to land a part so quickly. “I was the only Hispanic, short little kid,” he remarks of his Hannah Montana audition. Little did he know was that he would spend the next five years on the iconic show as Rico, a series regular. Following his Disney days, Moises pushed offers aside for a year until he felt ready to take on a role that could exemplify and better his acting abilities.

In 2013, he landed two key roles that furthered his growth as an artist. His masterfully crafted blend of awkward and hilarious character Biaggio in the Sundance-recognized indie film, The Kings of Summer, almost directly counters his stern, hard-edged role of Bonzo Madrid in Ender’s Game, the 2013 sci-fi

novel adaptation starring Asa Butterfield and Harrison Ford. “If I would have halfassed that character (Biaggio) just to look a little more cool, it wouldn’t have come off so natural,” he smiles. “It was really fun. I think that film in particular is the one that gave me an opportunity to actually think of myself as an actor—and it’s difficult to call yourself an actor.” With Amazon’s anticipated series, Jean-Claude Van Johnson, available to stream December 15th, Moises continues to enhance and improve his craft as an actor. “If my heart feels like a part is something that will challenge me and I’d benefit from; I can elevate from it.”

Arias has progressively evolved both as an artist in front and behind the camera through various projects and passions.

For the past five years, Moises has lived in the company of his brother, Mateo, an aspiring musician known as ¿Teo?, as well as his best friend and acclaimed rapper and actor, Jaden Smith. The three moved into Hidden Hills in 2015 and have been busy at work since. “Creativity is not only apparent, but is very propelled in our relationship,” Moises says of his roommates. “I think in this generation, creativity is overflowing, even if it’s just on Instagram or with words on Twitter. I think people have independent ways to show their creativity.” Moises, Mateo and Jaden,

as well as fellow collaborators Willow Smith, Jordyn Woods, Josh Woods, and Harry Hudson, have developed their own artist collective called MSFTSrep. “We all sort of had an idea when we were young to inspire youth even though we were youths ourselves,” Moises reflects. Launched in 2012, MSFTSrep has expanded from clothing into a platform representative of artistic expression through fashion, photography and

music. “What’s already come out of it has inspired so many people, including ourselves... it’s elevated how we think, how we dress, how we communicate, it’s something that’s been challenging, you know?” Moises’ deep, brown eyes gaze on the counter in front of him as he elaborates. “It’s been beautiful to see it start as an all-black, gothicinspired, emo-community, to skateboarding, singing, rapping, anything really. The word

MSFTS is a perfect word...Jaden and Mateo’s producer called us misfits when we were kids and it’s a hard word to represent.”

Another word serving as the product of Moises’ imaginative mind is 490tx, Moises’ chosen title to represent his photography. “When I started acting as a kid...my mom wouldn’t let me buy dumb shit; but she would definitely let me purchase cameras.” Inspired

by the film he shoots on -- yes, I said film -- “490tx is a name that is so vague, it allows a lot of leeway and creative freestyling to morph what it is.” Featured on the MSFTSrep website, 490tx.com allows what Moises likes to call “infinite scroll,” presenting some of Moises’ most breathtaking photographs taken within the past four years. Although he describes his art as “basically just black and white images,” I can’t help

but become enveloped in this infinite scroll of heightened reality. “I love colorful images, but there’s something about black and white that creates a tone,” Moises explains, “you definitely see clearer.”

My eyes scan his photographs of celebrities ranging from rappers like Kanye West, A$ap Rocky, and Tyler the Creator, to intimate, candid snaps of the Kardashians within their home,

to photos of strangers living on the streets. “People normally call these candid images’ but I call it photojournalism,” he claims. One of the qualities I immediately comment on is the apparent truth within each of his subject’s eyes. “Eyes are the most important part of the image,” he agrees, “When you’re speaking to someone, eye contact is sort of necessary to be on the same page. But cameras, for some reason shy away people’s

eyes. A lot of people get uncomfortable, so it’s about finding the time where they do ‘that’ for a second,” he says, pointing to a photo of Jaden, reclined and relaxed with a girl’s weary head on his chest. He appears to be in a daze, seemingly unaware of the camera’s presence. All of Moises’ images give off a similar feeling of trust and comfort, like we are seeing something we normally wouldn’t. Alongside his phenomenal still frames, he has also exercised his talents as a director, bouncing his own creative side off of Jaden’s and Mateo’s. “It’s difficult working with Jaden because he likes to

wake up on mountains”, Arias jokes, referencing the locally-shot music video for Jaden’s single, Batman. Moises has also combined his visuals with his brother’s own music, directing videos for ¿Teo?. “If you like something, what I would tell anybody, is to believe

ELEVATE

in it,” Moises encourages. Being only 23, Moises Arias has accomplished more as an artist than most and from the looks of it, he will accomplish much more as his journey as a true visionary continues.

PUMPKIN DONUTS gluten free

INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

• 1 tbsp Pumpkin Puree

• 1 1/4 cups Bob’s Red Mill 1 to 1 Baking Flour

• 1/4 cup flaxseed meal

• ¼ tsp baking soda

• ¼ tsp cream of tartar

• 1½ tsp baking powder

• 1/2 tsp salt

• ⅔ cup sugar

• 8 tbsp unsalted butter melted and cooled

• 1 tsp vanilla

• 2 eggs whites separated

• 1 cup milk

• 1 tbsp. pumpkin seeds

For icing:

• 1 1/2 cup powdered sugar

• 2- 4 tbsp milk

• Preheat oven to 350º.

• Spray your donut pan with cooking spray.

• In a large bowl, whisk together the first seven dry ingredients, flour through sugar.

• In another small bowl whisk together the melted and cooled butter, vanilla, egg yolks, milk, and pumpkin puree. Make a well in the center of dry ingredients and pour in. Mix gently.

• In a separate small bowl whisk the two egg whites for about a minute or two with a fork. You are just trying to get them a bit thicker so they add some fluffiness to the donuts.

• Add egg whites to mixture and stir just until mixed.

• Transfer mixture to a pastry bag and cut the corner tip off. This makes it easy to pipe into the donut pan.

• Fill each well 3/4 full without covering the middle section. If you do, your donuts won’t have a hole.

• Cook for about 8-10 minutes.

• Allow to cool completely before glazing.

• For the icing simply mix the powdered sugar with the desired amount of milk. More milk will make icing runny so don’t add too much at one time.

• Dip donuts in icing and place on a rack to drip dry.

• Garnish with pumpkin seeds.

KINGDOM

Sometimes collaborations happen that are the serendipitous combination of creativity and experience. This is the story of Jason Salstein, a connoisseur of fabulous footwear steeped in the details of style and design, and David Lipp, who has spent his career pairing great brands with the perfect retail experience. The two have been friends for 30 years and their new collaboration, The Kingdom, is the culmination of their collective passions. The beneficiaries of this creation…? Anyone who truly appreciates the nuances of the world’s finest fashion accessories.

Jason had always held a keen interest in the fashion world and how to stay ahead of whatever style is trending. After a few years with his own shoe line as well as a lead buyer for one of Miami’s most upscale boutiques, he decided to head west to open his own store. Not too familiar with L.A., he knew immediately to reach out to his good friend, David, who had been in SoCal for five years working in commercial real estate. He gave David one immediate goal…find a community that exemplifies high style but does not yet have a single destination for coveted, top-end brands. David not only knew the perfect place, but, knowing how well regarded Jason

was in the fashion world, he offered to be his business partner.

“I fell in love with Calabasas,” says Jason. “There was this rare balance of community mixed with realness, all with a touch of chic the likes of which I had never really seen.” Not only did he love the quaint neighborhood vibe that Calabasas offered, but the void in the market and need for luxury fashion was palpable. Two years later, after countless hours of tireless work –The Kingdom was born. “We wanted something very powerful and strong for the name; whimsical and worldly. We want everyone to come in and feel like

you’re in a realm apart from all else,” Jason said in regards to how they chose the name for their style haven. Not only is it a different domain, but The Kingdom is ever-evolving. It is a constantly renewed assortment of brands and styles that ensures the merchandise is always fresh and updated for all their beloved clientele. The boutique itself is set up with the essence of royalty with pink velvet sofas for people to sit atop while trying on the newest Saint Laurent boot or Golden Goose sneaker.

The timeliness of the assortment and refined aura is not the only thing that sets The Kingdom apart. The combination of true, marquis brands offered side by side will set your heart aflutter; Fendi, Saint Laurent, Gianvito Rossi, Givenchy, Balenciaga, Manolo Blahnik, Jimmy Choo…and this is only a small sampling! “We basically have Rodeo Drive in one Location in Calabasas,” says David. “It’s very unique and special that Jason has all of these relationships to be able to bring harness this into one experience and we are thrilled to be able to offer it the community.”

NAIL BAR renewal

After a long day of running errands, picking up children from school, and work, people crave time for unwinding and relaxation. Renewal Nail and Beauty Bar in Old Town Calabasas, now under new ownership, has revamped itself to become the destination for such a needed break.

A long-time member of the community, Bela Gerenshtein, the new owner, not only recognized the need for an oasis from the day, but also knew it would be an added layer of convenience for busy men and women to be able to get it all done in one place at one time, with the ability to book multiple services in one appointment. “We are a one-stop shop,” said

Bela. “We have milk and honey treatments, as well as full-body scrubs, micro-needling and medical micropigmentation treatments. We have hairstylists. We do nail art, acrylics, and gel. Our goal is to take this even further, always enhancing and expanding upon what we already offer.”

An esthetician for over 17 years, Bela has tapped into her experience to craft an expansive and tempting menu of skin services, including a 24K gold facial, microdermabrasion and chemical peel facials. “This is the area I obsess over,” said Bela. “I work closely with our staff and clients and have ensured to bring on top people with professional-level training who are

able to offer a level of services that is second to none.”

Beyond the services, Renewal is an experience for the senses from the moment you approach its charming and bright, rustic front porch and walk in to the fresh welcoming space. Located in the heart of Old Town, just across from the Sagebrush Cantina, Bela embraced the vibe of the original Calabasas community, offering a more intimate setting that not only makes you feel like you are on vacation, but is also an excellent place to celebrate a special occasion, such as a wedding shower or birthday party.

“Everyone loves to be pampered and we strive to make our clients feel content,” said Bela. “As a family-owned company, we treat our customers like our own family. We ensure that they leave here feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and renewed!”

Pets are always there to make us feel loved and respected whenever they are near, which is why it is imperative to give back to the furry friends that provide us a life filled with endless comedy and compassion. The Sit & Stay Pet Resort and Spa is a fantastic way to remind your pet of how much they truly mean to you. Whether you’re in need of a daycare or overnight boarding, Sit & Stay provides an environment you and your pet won’t ever want to leave.

“We opened The Sit & Stay Pet Resort & Spa to be a chain-link-free pet hotel,” says Caleigh Garcia, co-owner and young mother of 3 small children and 2 dogs. “We treat our pet-guests as if they were children, with the same loving care and attention being given to their every need and want, which includes aromatherapy, soothing music and 24 hour supervision.”

If all of those amenities didn’t sound convincing enough to check your pet in, or maybe even for yourself, Sit & Stay also offers brunch and dinner breaks, maid, as well as linen services, and continuous fresh water to all of their furry guests.

“We believe each pet should end their stay with us, a better balanced and happier pet,” Garcia says. “You’ll be pleasantly greeted by a balanced pet who’s simply happy to see you.”

“After just one visit, every guest pulls on the leash to get back in our doors faster each and every visit,” Garcia says. “Our very experienced groomers will wow you with fresh cuts, blueberry facials and thorough pampering of every spa guest.”

Sit & Stay is willing to go the extra mile to ensure your pet feels pampered and peaceful.

“They know they’ll be loved, make friends, feel safe, have lots of fun and maybe feel accomplished after a light training session in

daycare,” says Garcia. “Our overnight guests can receive bedtime snuggles, treats, a teeth brushing, or even a spa visit if their mom and dad say it’s ok.”

Not only is the Sit & Stay Pet Resort top-notch in every way, but it is also conveniently located right next door to the well known Paws & Claws Veterinary Hospital, which is reassuring to any pet parent who may be worried about leaving their furry companions overnight for the first time. “We are here to cater to pet parents wanting the best,” says Garcia. “ Without having to pay the most.”

FURNITURE CONSIGNMENT rebound

Why drive to the Westside when you can find a variety of hip, eclectic and trending home fashion furniture in Woodland Hills?

Part Palm Springs mod and part designer decor, Rebound Furniture Consignment has something for everyone and every budget. Consignment is

the “trend” in decorating. Designers have been shopping ‘used furniture’ for years with the treasure-hunt-like goal of snatching-up popular sought-after brands and styles in “like new” condition at affordable prices. The goal that Jeanne Bulmer and her Mom set upon when opening Rebound Furniture Consignment was to create a unique and chic destination for every day

shoppers where they could purchase true designer and trending pieces that may normally be out of reach.

“My Mom and I formed Rebound when we were both going through breast cancer treatment,” says Jeanne. “I had to reinvent myself from my previous career in commercial real-estate, and I remembered my Mom’s love for second-hand sales. Growing up, I was embarrassed by them, but now that I have fully grown to love second-hand upcycling, we are proud to have created a successful business from the concept.” Jeanne’s Mom, Faye unfortunately passed away in 2014, but through Jeanne’s meticulous care in curating the store’s offerings, her Mom’s love of furniture lives on.

Customers of Rebound are those shopping for wonderful furniture pieces and those wishing to upcycle their own décor. If you are moving or redecorating, consigning your décor is a wonderful option. Not only can you make some extra money, but it also saves the landfills. Customers often say, “I want someone to love my things as much as I have” and that’s what you get at Rebound. As part of the Rebound upcycling mission, they have a full time upholstery studio in-house for customers wishing to reinvent their own pieces. If you have a piece of furniture with good bones needing a update, their skilled artisans can bring your vision to life. They also make custom furniture.

Options aren’t limited to furniture however; Rebound carries a wide range of lighting, art and decorative accessories as well. You can honestly come each day and discover something new.

At Dance Dimensions, dance is more than just an after school hobby. It is considered a sacred space where all are able to release life’s trials and triumphs and leave them on the studio floor.

Pam Orenstein, owner of Dance Dimensions, has made it her life’s passion to help children and young adults discover their inner artist. The studio offers over 100 classes per week varying from ballet to Bollywood. The instructors who teach each class are professionals in their field, who find an immense value in passing down on their own talent and love for the art of dance to the next generation.

“I’ve seen the kids who have developed in the studio and are now using dance to enrich their lives,” Orenstein said. “When you have a passion; you form friendships; they are able to express themselves through movement.”

Dance Dimensions has recently moved locations, which is conveniently a half mile outside the Hidden Hills gate. This brand new location will provide both residents of Hidden Hills and people of the surrounding communities a space where freedom of expression and creativity are made a top priority for the aspiring star to thrive.

“If a child is a triple threat, it’s a one stop. We have a really large faculty who are are amazing; we are constantly bringing new things to it,” Orenstein said.

The studio has expanded its horizon and physical space to offer more classes that are not solely dance driven. Dance Dimensions also provides students and parents to explore other forms of performance art, such as acting and singing. What sets Orenstein’s creative setting apart from her counterparts is not only the diversity in the classes

offered, but also her hands-on approach to her role as studio owner.

“When a dancer dances, they don’t have to be the most beautifully technical dancer, they dance from the soul which then projects to the outside. They have that feeling of sense of self, so when they walk into a room

they feel really good about themselves, they feel confident,” said Orenstein.

Dance Dimensions has been a pillar in the community and now will be even more accessible to those throughout the Hidden Hills community

FLOORING glamour

Home renovation can be a daunting task if the people involved are not hands-on, however, flooring does not have to be included in the difficult part of the process. Glamour Flooring has two locations, the first one in Katy, Texas, and its second location in Woodland Hills, which opened in 2008. Glamour Flooring provides its customers with flooring galore, from wood, laminate, tile, to much more. The showroom itself has a wide array of choices for people to come and browse through until they find the perfect fit for their home.

“A lot of customers come in and say it is the best store they’ve been in,” Parada said. “Over here, anyone who has a flooring question, I’m here to answer them, I orchestrate everything from start to finish,” said Alexander Parada, owner of Glamour Flooring.

Parada wanted to create a flooring business that was involved personally with its clientele, which is the only way he conducts business at Glamour Flooring. His customers are his number one priority and he is

never too occupied to help them with whatever flooring needs they may come to him with. He does not believe in a third-party mentality when it comes to selecting flooring or tile, since everything can be completed through him from start to installation.

Parada grew up learning the flooring business through his own family who specialized in flooring installation, which sparked something inside of him to branch out and start his own company.

“All my family members did flooring installation and I’ve always had a passion for flooring,” explained Parada. “I’ve had a knack for putting flooring and design together because I have been in this business for over 12 years.”

Through his personal approach with customers, as well as his passion and knowledge on which flooring ties a room together, Parada has created a space where

people can clearly gain a visual of what their home will look like once everything is put into place.

“I encourage all of my clients to come in to order to see what kind of flooring they want. We have huge wooden displays on the walls, that way people can envision what the flooring is going to look like on a larger scale rather than taking a small wooden sample with them,” Parada said.

Glamour Flooring will ensure that your flooring needs will not only be met, they’ll be exceeded.

SOJOURN A sweet

ST. LUCIA’S SUGAR BEACH IS A PERFECT CONCOCTION THAT WHIPS HISTORY, NATURE, LUXURY, AND PHILANTHROPY INTO SOMETHING LUSCIOUSLY UNFORGETTABLE.

SUGAR BEACH IS A RARITY AMONG CARIBBEAN RESORTS, RECONCILING HISTORY, UNESCO-CALIBER NATURE PRESERVATION, AND LUXURY.

Beach houses by their very nature are romantic. Clean white interiors offset by natural woods and hits of blue and green that frame beach views visible from oversized windows and decks. Soft sea breezes set sheer curtains and fresh sea aromas into flight. At Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Luxury Resort nestled in the St. Lucia rain forest,

that ambiance is dialed up several notches to create an escape that’s all the more sensual and sensory. The expansive yet intimate resort is made up of 96 rooms, cottages, bungalows, and villas, as well as an additional 18 private residences, all of which underwent a multi-million dollar renovation in 2012. Rooms are appointed

with architectural elements like private walled gardens, plunge pools and terraces while luxury villas feature butler service and pristine patios. The property’s private residences boast sun terraces and fully outfitted kitchens.

The hotel sits atop the former Jalousie Plantation, an 18th Century sugar plantation that has UNESCO World

Heritage-listed Pitons in its backyard. Lush landscaping follows the flow of the Pitons’ geography and sweeps down to the soft white sand of Sugar Beach.

The property’s Rain Forest Spa features an Amerindian steam dome and seven tree house treatment rooms inspired by the island’s earliest civilizations. The treatment menu

The 120-minute Hot Stone Indulgence and Rain-forest Ultimate Couple Experience affords full-body exfoliation using an organic sea salt and raw coconut mixture, personalized healing massages and a luxurious and hydrating facial using Natura Bisse products.

A sulphur mud bath treatment and rinseoff at Toraille Waterfalls follow, along with a 25-minute back massage back at the spa.

Beyond the spa, the resort extends packages that include a destination wedding option for those wanting intimate nuptials. The four-day Sweet As Sugar Romance Package includes the Sulphur Seduction spa experience as well as a sunset cruise—an opportunity to swim in the water of the national marine reserve— a guided Gros Piton hike, breakfast-in-bed, a candlelit dinner anywhere on property, and of course roses and champagne.

Meanwhile, on-property amenities and off-property tours add fun and excitement to any stay. The supervised beach and free creative programs for children and teens make

the resort a welcome place for families as well as those seeking a grown up getaway. On the beach, in the water and around the resort, young guests can make new friends, learn new skills, and hang out under the watchful eye of childcare professionals while parents get to savor the island’s romantic attributes and the resort’s unique assets.

As for the resort’s bars and restaurants, the Great Room Restaurant and the Terrace Restaurant provide fine dining, with kitchens that spin out luxe selections like Kobe beef, mahi-mahi and scallops served on a bed of pureed Jerusalem artichokes. Fresh salads and sandwiches are served at the more casual Bayside Restaurant. While there are several bars on property, The Cane Bar features a professional “rummelier” who aids in the selection of expertly curated native and international rums, a unique service available only at this locale.

A tour around the surrounding Amerindian village provides a hearty immersion into the island’s history and culture. A drive down the island’s west coast through the historic Choiseul Province follows, along with a stop at Choiseul Arts and Craft Centre, and a stroll around the Balenbouche Estate.

More active families with teens will enjoy the challenging, three-hour Gros Piton Hike Adventure by Sea. Highlights include the 15 minute boat ride to the area, breathtaking views of Petit Piton, St. Vincent and the south of the island from the summit of Gros Piton, a swim in pristine Caribbean waters, and a local BBQ meal created by the resort’s Chef Esnard. Schiller Bikes rentals, available for 30and 60-minute sessions, provide an exciting and innovative new way to explore Anse des Pitons and marine life in the waters below. Naturally, more

traditional aquatic pursuits like scuba diving and snorkeling sessions are available.

Like other Viceroy Hotel and Resort properties, Sugar Beach is invested in several environmentally sustainable initiatives and policies as well as several philanthropic endeavors. A comprehensive water and energy savings plan covers everything from paper, glass, plastic and cardboard to toner cartridges, fluorescent bulbs and electronics.

Sugar Beach guests, meanwhile, get to play a part in the property’s community building efforts by helping themselves to hand-crafted sweets placed candy jars in the Great Room restaurant in exchange for a donation that will help finance a resource center for the nearby Bouton Combined School. The new building will provide additional classrooms and a computer lab. Donations from guests have also helped provide assistance with the school’s feeding program by providing lunches to the children attending the school.

NATURAL MATERIALS AND CAREFULLY RESEARCHED INTERIOR DESIGN CELEBRATE ST. LUCIA’S STANDING AS ONE OF THE MOST FASCINATING PLACES IN THE CARIBBEAN.

Sugar Beach has also collaborated with Cutty Ranks Barber Shop in the nearby village of Soufriere to provide monthly haircuts and hygienic supplies to underprivileged boys of the Bouton RC Combined School as well as fund a Scholarship Program for children of Sugar Beach employees who are high academic achievers. The property also raises funds for Sir Arthur Lewis Community College with the donation of computers to the tertiary institution. The technical branch of the College, named after

Sir Arthur Lewis—one of two Nobel laureates from St Lucia— is responsible for the training of future I.T. specialists from the area.

Automotive Custom Build Houses are abundant in Southern California, but as plentiful as they are, very few excel to the highest echelon of quality. You can pay just about anyone to build you a ‘57 Chevy, Charger or Classic Mustang Fastback, and most likely they will be

a good product. Good... but not great. Then there are shops that build really great vehicles and you’d have a smile on your face. Build quality would be excellent, fit and finish would be clean and power would be sufficient. But... do you really want to spend close to $300K on a custom vehicle and have it be sufficient?

CUSTOM BUILD FUSION MOTORS HITTING CONSISTENT HOME RUNS MOTORS
FUSION
MOTORS HAS THE EXCLUSIVE VIP LICENSE TO PRODUCE THE “GONE IN 60 SECONDS” ELEANOR MUSTANG. NO ONE ELSE. GO, BABY, GO!
WRITTEN BY FIREBALL TIM LAWRENCE. PHOTOS COURTESY OF FUSION MOTORS

Now, as I have said and for those that know me, I have visited and experienced hundreds of shops around the country and a lot of them are pretty amazing. Great cars driving the roads. But recently, my bar was virtually devastated when I visited Fusion Motor Co. in Chatsworth. Walking in the door, there was no one at the front desk. Empty. I poked around until a young Ashley directed me to owner Yoel Wazana’s office. The first thing that Yoel showed me was a beautiful

coffee table book that each client gets that includes photos and all details of the build of their specific vehicle. A “Thank You” of sorts to remember the experience. And after I picked up my jaw off the floor, the tour began.

As we walked the massive 50K sq. ft. shop, Yoel filled me in on Fusion’s beginnings. “Fusion Motor Company has been in business since 2010,” he explained. “My passion for cars started at a young age building cars in my parent’s garage, but after creating a successful business in the manufacturing industry, I decided to follow my passion and start building and selling cars.”

That was a severe understatement as we passed the Finishing Room with several bays, Machine Shop, Paint and Body Rooms, 5Axis Machine, Upholstery room and so much more that my neck was starting to throb. There were at least 10 Eleanor Mustangs in various stages for clients in Russia, France and America. Plus, Chargers, Challengers, Cudas and a Satin Black Elle

THE

that floored me... literally. But it wasn’t just the overwhelming cool car factor as it was the precision of each model. Yoel mentioned that the entire bodies are powder-coated to ensure the level of finish from the beginning. I had a serious problem finding a flaw. The paint and surface areas (which are my specialty) were serious. Very serious. I began to realize the level to which these guys played the game and it was no nonsense.

Fusion now owns the Officially Licensed 1967 Ford Mustang “Eleanor” and is the only place allowed to build them. But unlike the movie cars to which I did with Cinema Vehicle Services, these beauties came with a variety of option and power-plants. Hardcore Supercharged 750horse powerplants with a 6-speed tranny. They also had a 2016 Ferrari 488 GTB with carbon fiber wide body kit

developed in-house.

I also got the chance to see some of the top secret projects they’re working on that will be revealed next year, and although I’m dying to tell you what it is, all I can say is that you’re gonna want one baaaad.

Now, chances are that you’ve seen one or two or a few of Fusion’s cars at shows in and around SoCal, especially in Hidden Hills since Yoel’s brother lives there. A veritable playground of perfect muscle... I mean the cars of course. But Hidden Hills is one of the strongest areas for spotting cool rides and Fusion nearly dominates the market. But wait... there’s more.

If you have a Rolls, Bentley, Ferrari or Lambo that you might be tired of as I always am, Fusion’s Dealership arm will take it off your hands right quick with an immediate fat check and/or help you to trade up to a new beast. One peek in their showroom

down the street and I was a kid stuck in a gumball machine with visions of smokey donuts in the parking lot.

Like I said, I’ve experienced many shops and thousands of builds on my show, but walking into Fusion’s Playground, I was slapped, thumped and yanked into the land of awesome. Nowhere had I seen a consistent level of expert craftsmanship as I did there. And one conversation with Yoel revealed to me that this man’s dire need was to create Mona Lisa’s on Wheels. I dug it.

Rarely do you see the complete package as I did with Fusion. Excited also to see and feel success for someone as kind and

giving as Yoel seemed to be. His treatment of his people reflected his standards and trickled down into the cars. What you’d be getting from them would be the real deal... and you’ll know it.

I want to thank Yoel and his team for allowing me to pierce the vale of coolness and see what’s in store for their future. This is what happens when you do it right. Now... let the driving begin.

Horse-lover Jessica Karlsson has been riding and show jumping horses all of her life. Now, Karlsson is a professional horse-clipper, sculpting intricate and creative designs into horses’ ears, necks, and sides. She first began clipping horses because it was an essential aspect of maintaining them. “Back home, in Sweden, there are four seasons,” Karlsson explained. “When you’re training and showing horses, you have to clip them because they get sweaty.” The clippings help the horses’ hair dry up more quickly when they return to the barn. This prevents the horses’ sweat from freezing in the cold weather. After years of practice, Karlsson became inspired to try artistic clippings.

Karlsson’s own horse lives in Hidden Hills and is decorated with a star pattern shaved into its coat. However, Karlsson also clips horses for clients across LA. The clippings constantly vary, as she may clip just the ears, the neck, or perform a full-body clip.“Sometimes clippings are spread out for around three days,” Karlsson said, telling that she gives the horse numerous breaks in between lengthy clipping sessions. “That’s about 17 or 18 hours total. But, it’s meditating for me.”

Occasionally, the sound of Karlsson’s machine frightens the horses at first. After getting to know Karlsson, though, the clippings become meditating for them, too.
