“SUNSETS” SUMMER CONCERT SERIES AT CALABASAS LAKE

The Calabasas Lakeside Summer Concerts began as an offshoot of the Calabasas Chamber Orchestra presentations many years ago, and have since become among the City’s most popular and well attended events. They were unfortunately cancelled last year because of the pandemic, so many are glad to have them back.

The first concert featured “Stone Soul,” with future installments on August 8th (“Yachty by Nature”) and August 29th (“Cash Killer and King”).

All concerts begin at 6 p.m. and take place alongside Calabasas Lake adjacent to the Calabasas Tennis & Swim Center. Attendees can gain entrance to the area by accessing the gate (which is normally closed and restricted to Calabasas Park residents) at the end of the Tennis & Swim Center parking lot.

Concerts are open to the public and free of charge.

Artisinal Grains from Granola Garden

The genius behind all of Granola Garden’s recipes began with a mother with over 4 decades of experience working wonders in the baking world. As a young woman, she worked at a natural foods bakery in Oakland where she discovered her passion for baking and creating healthy, delicious food. Some years later, with four young children to take care of, she turned that passion into a business, making and selling truly nutritious granola that tasted amazing.

One of her sons, Taji, began working with his mother in highschool and always had dreams of becoming an entrepreneur. As he got older, the work and the

dream came together presenting an opportunity to expand the family business. Hence, Your Granola Garden was born as a blessing from his mother to branch out while still using only the best, mom’s original recipes. our Granola Garden is an established, family-owned business that has been dedicated to creating quality products packed with amazing taste. Their top seller is their delicious and nutritious granola, but they also offer vegan cinnamon rolls, vegan chocolate chip and oatmeal cookies, and energy bars - remarkably tasty! They believe that healthy foods are essential to a good life. With their products, you will eat to live.

Sanaz Aghachi, the founder of Trillion Candle was raised to always focus on finishing school and then settling down to raise a family. Bringing passionate energy to every endeavor and possessing an uncommon ability to harness a diverse range of talents, she began her professional life with a degree in Business and went on to certify in Diamond Grading at GIA. Her boundless enthusiasm for diamonds and royal fragrances enable her to merge the two worlds into one. A luxury candle that has a 14K gold diamond necklace inside. Candles

represent light, homeliness, and bring comfort; Diamonds symbolize prosperity, eternity, and love. There are five different elegant fragrances of her favorite scents and three variations of the color gold: yellow, white, and rose. “To light up every house with love, one Trillion Candle at a time,” It’s not only her ideality but also her best wish. She also offers candles without the necklaces in 3 different sizes; 3-wick, 2-wick, minis, and 6 different fragrances to choose from; Bamboo, Gardenia, Mandarin, Pumpkin, Signature, Wood. HH

HEALTHCARE HEROES

Every person has felt the impacts of COVID-19 in one way or another. The Hidden Hills Charity Musicale raised $13,031 for our Local Healthcare Heroes at a screening party held this past June. The funds were donated to Connecting a Caring Community to sponsor an event to benefit the local Fire Department, Sheriff’s, EMT’s, Doctors & Nurses who have supported our community during these challenging times. Connecting a Caring Community is a not for profit organization that mobilizes others to raise funds and provide relief to those in our local community who are most in need. It strives to encourage others into action through their programs that create a culture of giving back through

awareness, experience and meaningful interactions.

At the end of July, Hidden Hills hosted two “Shift-Change” luncheons at West Hills Hospital & Medical Center. The proceeds from the event provided meals to over 400 Healthcare Heroes. The Essential Workers enjoyed a meal from the Heavy Handed Burger truck, a sweet dessert from the Donut Truck, & delicious containers of hand carved fruit from a cart. This is one way to give thanks to the Local Healthcare Heroes who treat Hidden Hills residents like members of their families and do everything in their power to protect the health and safety of our community. SONGS FROM THE ROAD

Kissing the Southern Californian coast in Malibu, the Song Word Art House recently held a collection show entitled Goin’ and Blowin’ Songs from the Road. With aims of celebrating themes of freedom and escapade the walls

were dashed and dotted with distinctive paintings and figures giving an elusive and whimsical vibration inviting curiosity. Featuring art inspired and serving as tangible embodiments of rich lyrics by legendary songwriters such as Jim Morrison, Bob Dylan, John Denver, Michael Jackson, and many more.

26 The Hidden Hills Register & Resource Guide | August 2021

Motivated to create a tangible, emotionally potent bridge between the audible and visual modes of artistic expression, the Song Word Art House was born. Co-founder Joe Woolf drew inspiration for the unique art house concept from witnessing a live show of singer, songwriter, and poet, Leonard Cohen. He thought, “How amazing would it be to try to figure out a way to really take the lyrics of songwriting,

of great songwriting, and reinvent, re-energize, and reconfigure it so that the person who’s witnessing (the visual art) now has a different emotional connection”. With past collections centering around themes of rebellion and lust, this June 26th, Woolf wanted to highlight the open horizons of a world reopening with the art house’s “The Road” collection.

OPPOSITE: I’m on Fire by Donna Isham.

LEFT: Several rock-theamed pieces at the gallery.

MIDDLE: Donna’s artwork is derived from the female gaze.

BOTTOM: Gallery attendees look upon the plethora of amazing work.

Hidden Hills resident, abstract and figurative painter, Donna Isham contributed two paintings to the Song Word Art House collection. With her art having visual rhythm and line work that mirrors tossed seas of soul, and subject matter of sincere femininity that captures both the radiant and moon shadowed Venus in all women.

She says, “I’m painting from a female gaze, not from a male gaze. Historically all of these paintings were done sort of voyeuristically from a male gaze and my whole point is to empower women and make them feel stronger and do it from a female gaze”. Her work carries a sole depth of femininity that gives it an irreplicable wholeness and magnetism.

For the Songs from The Road collection, she displayed two figuration pieces,

“I’m On Fire” inspired by the Bruce Springsteen classic. As well as “Dirty Diana”, embodying the Michael Jackson song of a woman on the road using her sexuality for a grander destination. Donna said, “for me, it was just interesting to not evaluate the song. But more to open up the dialogue of what does that mean to be close to fame? What does that mean to want to just have a part of that”. Alleviating the necessity for connotation or verbal interpretation, left with a vulnerability of soul, Donna gives those who view her work the gift of experiencing honesty and beauty through a female lens. With shades of vulnerability, power, openness and freedom the paintings harmoniously melded with the Song Word Art House’s message.

As George Harrison reflects in the Beatles’ legendary love song, “Something”, the

magnetism of the woman whom he loves can never be fully encapsulated by just words. The artwork of Donna Isham reflects that notion, and in her work, she embodies the divine “something” that may only be able to be defined through essence. Her mode of expression is tactile and visual, creating pieces that sensually and poetically communicate the feminine. HH

NEIGHBORS REVIEW

CROSSROADS KITCHEN

Los Angeles

THE WATKINS FAMILY VENTURES OUT TO MELROSE TO GIVE AN REVIEW BRUNCH AT THEIR FAVORITE PLANT BASED RESTAURANT

Hello to all of our Hidden Hills neighbors from the Watkins family! We were recently asked to review one of our favorite vegan restaurants in Southern California, Crossroads Kitchen in Los Angeles on Melrose. As we’ve only eaten there for dinner, we decided to try their brunch, which we’ve heard a lot about. Maurice, Tamika, Zoe, Sophie and Bonnie made the trip (Noah was out of town) for our 12:00 reservations.

Upon arrival, we utilized the valet parking that is conveniently offered on Melrose. We were promptly seated inside (outside patio seating is also available). The menu didn’t have a plethora of choices, but they certainly looked enticing, so we tried seven of their various breakfast plates. We ordered the Chicken & Waffles, Stuffed French

Toast, Crossroads Benedict, Spinach & Feta Frittata, Impossible Breakfast Sausage Sandwich, Impossible Breakfast Sausage Burrito and Pancakes. Our waiter, Daniel, was friendly and attentive. The Executive Chef is Scot Jones. Chef Tal Ronnen is a chef and owner.

We tried all of the dishes and, to be honest, we were somewhat disappointed. When we ate there for dinner, we absolutely loved everything we ordered. This wasn’t the case with the brunch. However, there were some delectable dishes we would definitely order again. The Crossroads Benedict melted in our mouths. The Stuffed French Toast was trés magnifique. The Chicken & Waffles were simply delicious. The Spinach & Feta Frittata and Pancakes were tasty. The Impossible Breakfast Sausage Burrito was

especially palatable (after removing the chunky green bell peppers).

The restaurant’s décor is quite charming, but the ambience is more enchanting during the evening than during the afternoon. That being said, we highly recommend that you visit Crossroads for dinner, but if you happen to go there for brunch consider ordering one of the dishes that we recommended above.

Ciao! That’s all for now. See you at the summer BBQs! HH

KEEPING YOUR PETS

COOL & SAFE

IN THE SUMMERTIME

The Southern California heat is upon us. Here’s how you can help your dog stay safe during periods of hot weather.

It may seem like common sense to think about your pet during a heat wave, but sometimes we overlook ways in which they are more susceptible to the heat than we are. It goes without saying to not leave your pet in a hot car, but even leaving the windows cracked when the ambient temperature is in the 80s can quickly lead to the inside temperature of the car becoming dangerously hot very quickly (over 100 F).

Another thing to watch out for on really hot days, is burning hot pavement. Our dog’s paws can easily burn when pavement or cement gets hot. If the pavement would be too hot for you to walk on barefoot, it’s too hot for your dog. Another common summer paw injury we see is in dogs that are running around on cement, often by the pool, for an excessive

amount of time. Both the heat and the friction of the paws on the cement can cause the paw pads to become raw. Although not life threatening, this is very painful and a difficult injury to deal with since the dog may be too painful to walk.

It’s best to keep your pets in an air conditioned indoor environment during the hottest part of the day, and restrict walks to when it is cooler in the early morning or later in the evening. However, if that is not possible, they should at least have a cooler fully shaded outdoor area with plenty of fresh clean water to make sure your dog stays hydrated. This is especially true for brachycephalic breeds (flat nosed dogs) such as English and French bulldogs. These breeds, because of the altered anatomy of their nose, mouth, and facial structures, have a diminished ability to cool themselves and they can get themselves into heat trouble very fast. Any temperature over 80 F

Dr. Allie grew up in Hidden Hills as an avid equestrian. She went on to receive her veterinary degree from University of California, Davis in 2017. She now practices as a mobile house call veterinarian seeing her patients, large and small, in the comfort of their own homes. drtashnek.com

can mean trouble for these guys, especially if they are exerting themselves. Also remember that a lot of our dogs are wearing a fur coat! While the temperature may feel nice for us, breeds like the Husky, German Shepherd, and other double coated breeds aren’t designed for warm weather.

How do I know my dog is having trouble with the heat?

The first thing to watch for is excessive panting. Your dog pants to cool itself, and this is a normal behavior, however if the panting is excessive or it takes longer than ten minutes for your dog to recover from the heat once he or she is back in an air conditioned space, this may be an early sign that they aren’t handling the heat well. More serious signs of heat stroke can include red gums, vomiting and diarrhea, rapid pulse, and collapse. If you notice any of these signs, take your dog to the nearest veterinary emergency facility immediately. These signs

indicate a serious medical emergency that needs immediate treatment. If you aren’t sure if your dog is overheated, the best way to check is to take their temperature rectally. A normal dog’s temperature should not exceed about 101.5 F.

If you determine that your dog is overheated and needs to see a veterinarian, there are a few things you can do to help your pet while enroute. We want to help them cool their body, but we can’t cool them too fast or we can do more damage. The first thing to do is to get them in air conditioning, preferably in your car as you are driving to the vet. You can offer a small amount of water but do not force them to drink, and do not offer any if they are vomiting. Place cool wet towels on them, especially on their paws. You can also hose them off with cool water before you get them in the car. Avoid use of ice water or

Once at the vet hospital, your vet will run diagnostics to assess their current temperature, organ function, and overall status. Moderate yet MAJESTIC a quick & scenic hidden hills hike

Living in Hidden Hills gives us direct access to some of the greatest hiking trails in Southern California, including what was once one of the most controversial local pieces of land called Ahmanson Ranch. Thankfully in 2004, the more than 3,000-acres, also known as the Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve, located at the western edge of the San Fernando Valley was sold to the State to become a protected park full of well maintained trails for hiking, running, walking, horseback and mountain bike riding.

The quickest access into Ahmanson Ranch for Hidden Hills residents is to enter through Craig’s Gate at the top of Long Valley Road. The first part of the hike greets you with a choice of a paved road or a dirt switchback trail among the newly planted oak trees. As visitors of all levels & ages ascend the moderate uphill incline, they reach the historic Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Ranch house. It sits at the top of the fire road on this trailhead, highlighting one of the most commanding views of the Pacific Ocean over the grassy hills of Calabasas & Malibu. From

here, the route leads you to the Mary Wiesbrock Loop Trail which guides you around a flat area called Lasky Mesa. The gentle rolling hills have little shade which provide clear views of the Santa Monica Mountains, the San Fernando Valley, and Las Virgenes Canyon. Dogs are welcome on leash as quite often coyotes and other wildlife are present. This moderate hike will invigorate your body & mind, and remind you of the importance of preserving open space. HH

A TASTE OF TEMECULA

South Coast Winery Resort & Spa and Ponte Vineyard Inn

WEEKEND GETAWAY

What wines or varietals you prefer is a matter of taste, and there really isn’t a right or wrong. The same holds true for how you decide to spend your time in “Wine Country.” While we know the possibilities are practically endless in Napa and Sonoma, part of being a serious wine aficionado is also being open to new discoveries. And perhaps, it’s high time to discover a couple of tasteful resorts that await south of Los Angeles, in Temecula. Whether you enjoy your tasting and taste-ful experience with old world trappings or new world finesse, chances are that an extended weekend or week in Temecula Wine Country will leave a wonderful lingering sensation on the palette. And better still, they are committed to inclusivity, as both properties are ADA accessible.

Like the private residences at some of the top French and Italian vineyards, the lodgings at the South Coast Winery Resort & Spa are surrounded by vineyards, along with privacy and the wonders of nature. In the spirit of some of the great houses across the Atlantic, luxury inside the suites and villas is expressed with toasty fireplaces, terraces, wine-inspired color schemes, and Victorianin era decor. The spa-like bathrooms (with marble and granite bathroom fixtures, walk-in showers and oversized Jacuzzi tub) and custom-designed mattresses.

As you may expect from a high-end winery inn, its Vineyard Rose Restaurant (anchored by Executive Chef Jose Esparza) is an ideal place to pair and enjoy the vineyard’s wines in their element, with fresh and contemporary California-American fare. Naturally, there is also a “Tasting Experience” at the wine and gift shop. However, the resort’s 17,000-square-foot GrapeSeed Spa presents the most complete way to soak in Temecula’s best, via its vine-based treatments and services. A prime

example is the customizable Gorgeous GrapeSeed Facial enriched with Vitamin C, Pro Vitamins, and advanced botanicals.

A tour of its on-property winery reveals how South Coast Winery’s winemakers, Jon McPherson & Javier Flores, experiment with the vineyards, vintages and blends to create wines of the same caliber as competing wineries based in Northern California wine production areas. It has received thousands of wine awards (3,000 and counting) over the years, including four “Best California State Winery of the Year” awards. It also took the 2019 “Winery of the Year”

premium award at the 39th Annual San Francisco International Wine Competition (SFIWC), one of the oldest international wine competitions in the world and North America’s largest wine judging event.

Other exclusive offerings and activities include “Stargazing with an Astronomer,” “Temecula Bicycle Rides” around the property, bike rentals available for touring the town, and romantic ‘Temecula Carriage Rides.” Dogs are also welcome to join the fun, as the resort welcomes two dogs up to 60 lbs for an additional fee of $100 per pet, per stay. Guest pets receive a Wag Bag of amenities, including bowls, a

of-day essentials including fruit, pastries, yogurt, steel cut oats, eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, fruit juices and coffee.

Ponte Winery, also a short drive from the hotel, relaunched its popular tours this past June to the delight of oenophiles. Its lively tours, which run the gamut from a general introduction to winemaking to information packed explorations around the 310-acre ranch, run between Wednesday through

Sunday between 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The boutique producer is noted for its focus on painstakingly crafted small batch varietal wines, yielding approximately 1,500 cases per year. About 21 varietals are cultivated, including favorites originating from Italy (Moscato, Sangiovese), Spain (Tempranillo), France and, naturally, California. A dedication to small production enables the

winemakers to focus on superior quality over quantity.

Other activities, which can be arranged through the inn’s guest concierge, include in-room spa treatments from nearby purveyors, hot air balloon rides, horseback riding, golf (Temecula Creek Inn Golf Course is 10 minutes away by car), and more.
