Patterned

after the unmistakable starched-coated English fox hunting, these hunts carried an additional splash of a laissez-faire charm.

Hunts often took place on the open landscapes of Chatsworth, Big Sycamore Canyon in Ventura, Calabasas and the Crummer/Ahmonson Ranch (later to become Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space

Preserve) just at the back door of Hidden Hills. Traditionally, attracted to a more evergreen climate, the fox is no manner near in abundant supply in the Southern Californian semi-arid terrain. So instead, these West Hills “Fox Hunts” were rather West Hills “Coyote Hunts”.

Each club had members of clearly defined roles mirroring the traditional fox hunts. The “Master” is responsible for the overseeing of the conduct of the hunt, while the “Huntsman” is in charge of directing the pack of hounds during the excursion. The “Huntsman” is then assisted by one or more “WhipperIn”. All three high tiered positions whom are decided by peer vote are adorned with the traditional red coat. While all whom do not fall into those three categories are called the “Field” and “Hunt Followers” and wear black coats.

Unique to only a Southern Californian setting, the crimson coats of the Hunt Club had ties with the silver screens of Los Angeles. MGM singer, dancer and actor Dan Dailey, whom owned a ranch nearby, is credited to have been a part of organizing the original hunt club back in 1949 along with a group of World War 2 Cavalrymen, while former president and actor Ronald Reagan reigned as hunt master for many years. Additional screen legends of the West Hills Hunts Club included Walt Disney, Randolph Scott, John Huston, Spencer Tracy, Burgess Meredith, Jose Ferrer and Joan Fontaine.

popular destination for the West Hills Hunts), even at one point having a “stock ranch” on the premise to shoot scenes with. The Lasky Mesa, a portion of the Crummer Ranch, was a flat, vast expanse of golden grain carefully dotted with viridian green Oak Trees. Its beauty not only captured the aesthetic of a “western horizon”, but the eyes of many filmmakers. Most notably, having Gone with the Wind’s Vivien Leigh engulfed in the light of a tangerine sky saying the infamous lines of, “I’ll never go hungry again!”, along with additional films tied to the Crummer Ranch being The Santa Fe Trial (in which Ronald Regan starred in), Duel in the Sun, The Adventures of Don Juan, They Died with their Boots on, The Homesteaders, The Great West That Was, and Wild Heritage.

In order to keep the treasured land protected from brush overgrowth and fires, owners of Crummer Ranch were known to rent flocks of sheep to graze the area. A shepherd would travel with the sheep across the entirety of the land for weeks on end. Coyotes were known to be an insidious threat to ranchers and sheep herders alike, killing helpless lambs and calves one by one. In order to keep the livestock and land safe and in tack, it was a necessary reality that coyote populations be kept at bay. Thus, the West Hills Hunt Club began to develop a symbiotic relationship with the land they hunted on.

The hunting season traditionally lasted from October through May consisting of around 35-45 hunts. Along with these hunts, additional events were held, including various equestrian shows and completions held at Devonshire Downs. At the end of the season, participants traded in their saddles and riding boots

accomplishments and rich sense of comradery.

Coyotes, built to be much quicker than the traditional fox, were more often than not rarely caught. The thrill was in the chase, not the catch. It did not matter what walk of life you came from; the importance was about being able to live in the present. The ability to work as a team and make quick twists and turns to pursue the catch. To be connected the rhythm of pounding horse hooves and your eyesight constantly transfixed on the possibility of a new lead. To have the only ceiling be the bright blue sky and feel as if you are trapped in a movie scene. It is no wonder to see the allure these hunts had. The attractiveness, of even just for a moment, being able to escape and

have the outside world be gone with the wind.

Today the West Hills Hunt Club has become the “West Hills Hounds” and has since merged with the “Santa Fe Hunt”, located in Temecula California. Recognized by the Masters of Foxhounds Association of North America, the club continues to keep the rich tradition of a west coast hunt alive. HH

you can witness your food being prepared by our chef (you may even witness a shrimp toss if you’re lucky).

In business, our values don’t really change in the middle of a pandemic. For us, it goes beyond the money we want to earn. During lockdown days in 2020, we donated all of our raw ingredients and remaining inventory to our local food banks to help feed our community. We committed to our healthcare heroes by preparing food for local hospitals. All the while, we witnessed the hardships faced by the food industry especially here in our community of Los Angeles. A year into the pandemic, we’re seeing businesses like ours still hanging in there and making things work. As an ode to our resilient community of Los Angeles we did a business name change to TEPPANGELES (Teppanyaki-Los Angeles). HH

TEPPANGELES by Suteki-ya Catering was established in 2015 by owners Chandra Haryono and Kelly Ongsiazon. Their business was conceptualized by principle of making fast food good again. They are the first to introduce teppanyaki (or some may refer to as hibachi) as a pop-up, serving and operating at local farmers markets throughout Los Angeles.

With competitors offering similar products and using similar styles, what sets us apart is our focus on quality and using fresh, raw ingredients. Our menu includes Chicken, Shrimp, Ribeye Steak, Salmon and Lobster prepared teppanyaki style in our house special garlic butter sauce. Just like being in a restaurant,

SURFRIDER

Even if you live just over the hill from Malibu, there’s no denying it’s a completely different world, with its chic approach on beach culture, casual fashion and cuisine. Since 1953, the exclusive, 20-room Surfrider Malibu has been the perfect encapsulation of this internationally beloved destination. However, it’s all the more so with a recent remodel that establishes it as the ultimate beach residence that makes “travel like a local” effortless.

Numerous accolades and awards from the world’s top lifestyle and travel magazines and

websites confirm the Surfrider’s status as ultimate Malibu, but don’t just take influential media’s word for it. Begin with its location, on Pacific Coast Highway with First Point Malibu and the Pacific Ocean at your feet. It is also unique in that it provides guests its own soundtrack, with music (sometimes live) made up of globally-inspired tracks curated by in-house and internationally acclaimed music-surfers.

The Roof Deck Bar and Restaurant serves as the guests’ private patio deck, with the beach as the front yard, and the property’s “private chefs” whipping up Coastal-Californian with sustainable and organic produce from Malibu’s “backyard” of local farms and purveyors (including Malibu’s own Eli’s Bee’s and Thorne Family Farm, along with Frog Hollow Farm in Brentwood and Apricot Lane Farms, Gean Family Farm,

KEEPING YOUR INDOOR CAT HAPPY

Cats are complex animals that require a significant amount of enrichment and stimulation. Many think that all an indoor cat needs is some food and someone to clean its litter box, but there’s a lot more to ensuring that your cat’s physical and mental needs are met. In the wild, cats are voracious predators and their lives consist of stalking their prey in order to get their next meal. Their domestic counterparts, on the other hand, spend most of their days lounging around on the couch. Although this may seem like an easy life for a house cat, stress and boredom can quickly ensue and adversely impact their health.

In the wild, cats have to work for their food. We can simulate this behavior in our home by making meal time a bit more challenging for your pet. There

are many products on the market that make your pet work for their dinner. These include slow feeders, meal puzzles, and other products such as rolling spheres that dispense kibble as they are rolled. These devices can provide much needed mental stimulation which promotes overall well being.

Depending on their age and breed, cats will need various levels of

enrichment to ensure they aren’t bored. Sometimes boredom can show itself as behavioral issues, such as destroying furniture, scratching, overgrooming, urinating outside the litter box, or just being rambunctious. There are lots of ways to enrich your cat’s environment to keep his mind and body busy. The first thing to do is to make sure your cat has plenty of toys. This doesn’t just mean a couple toy mice, but interactive toys that mimic behavior in the wild. These can be toys that are battery operated and react to your cat’s movement, and are interactive in nature making your cat chase, pounce, and “hunt”. It’s also important for your cat to have ways to display normal scratching behaviors. Make sure to have plenty of scratching posts, preferably in different shapes and materials, otherwise your cat may

take it upon himself to make his own scratching post with your furniture. Another important consideration in keeping a house cat that is often overlooked is the use of a litter box. Some cats are easy going and don’t mind a simple potty setup, but other cats can be extremely picky, especially when there are multiple cats in the household. It’s important to clean the box daily and have adequate space for your cat. The bigger the box the better. Some cats can be quite particular with the type of litter used, preferring clay, pellets, or pine litter. Multiple cats in the household also bring on multiple challenges since cats don’t like sharing their facilities. A good rule of thumb is to provide one litter box per cat, plus one. For example, for a two cat household, experts recommend having three litter boxes. We all know that exercise is important for both mental and physical stimulation. It’s recommended that cats are actively played with for at least fifteen minutes twice a day. Making this a part of their daily schedule, such as before each meal, can be a part of maintaining a healthy daily routine that mimics what their behavior would be like in the wild. Interactive play with your cat using string or dangling toys is both good for their body but also their mind. Some cats also benefit from exercise on a cat wheel. Sufficient mental and physical exercise makes for a tired cat, and a tired cat is a cat that is more likely to sleep through the night and not wake you up. Another great way to get your cat to exercise is taking him for a walk outside (supervised of course). Many cats

actually are able to be trained to walk on a harness and leash. While keeping a cat indoors is often the safest place for him, some kitties long to be outside. A great option for these cats is an enclosed outdoor catio (cat enclosure). This allows your cat to see the great outdoors including birds, bugs, and squirrels, providing mental enrichment while keeping your cat safe from predators, cars, and other dangers. There are many resources online to purchase premade catios, or get inspiration to make your own.
