VivaLa FIESTA!

There was a time when all knew that the sound of horse hooves clicking against the hard pavement and the aroma of freshly cut grass cascading past wind-dancing streamers marked the commencement of a special day. The Hidden Hills Fiesta in its earliest days, has always been a communal celebration, carrying a rural warmth centered around the spirit of the old west. The first gathering began on October 20, 1962 to honor the first-year anniversary of the inception of Hidden Hills as a unified city. The first Grand Marshall was Monte Montana Jr., son of the famous rodeo trick roper, stuntman, actor and all-around cowboy Monte Montana, who brought with him the traditions of the Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show.

The Fiesta was known to last for two days, with central themes showcasing the early pioneering spirit of Hidden Hills. There were many festivities throughout the weekend, such as country music, dancing, arts and crafts contests, costume contests, cook-offs, weaving, cultural dance demonstrations and many others. Commencing after the Pancake Breakfast, the highlight was the chance to participate in the Old Time Parade. Known to meet at the Round Meadow School, they would proceed along Round Meadow Road down to Long Valley Road and loop around the neighborhood. More often than not tracing an encore route through Old Town Calabasas. According to a

1966 Fiesta flier, spectators were encouraged to “assemble under cool pepper trees and watch with vigor”.

There was a welcoming, “come as you are” mentality, with participants spending weeks decorating whatever wheel-bearing item they had with bright colors and streamers to carouse down the neighborhood. Some families piled in the back of pick-up trucks or horse drawn wagons, while others opted to create beautifully crafted floats. Juliette

Demain-Woods, early Hidden Hills resident, recalls a time as a child in 1969 when “we built a covered wagon float for the Fiesta parade. It was ‘pulled’ by two fiberglass horses, which we purchased from the Rafter R riding stables at the end of Long Valley Circle on a dirt road. The horses were thrashed, so we restored them with fiberglass cloth, a setting compound and paint. It was a family project which included a lot of the neighborhood kids”. There were also young boys and girls who

would walk with their dogs (and even rabbits), decorate their bikes to cruise along with the trucks and floats or ride their horses with their family and friends.

Accentuating the community’s Western roots, Clayton Moore, also known as the Lone Ranger, was known to participate in the festivities by horse-back riding in the parade atop his beautifully crafted Bohlin Silver Saddle. Ed Bohlin, known as “the most famous saddle maker to

walk this earth”, crafted each one with a unique artistry that were a favorite of many Hollywood Cowboys; Clayton Moore, Monte Montana, and legends such as Roy Rogers and Gene Autrey among them. The Autry Museum of the American West still has many pieces of Bohlin’s “western art” on display.

Furthering the Old West/Equestrian spirit, many of the Hidden Hills children were known to participate in the annual Fiesta Gymkhana. Ribbons, buckles and trophies were awarded to the winners of each event such as barrel racing, pole bending and the “dollar bill ride”. Along with the traditional activities there were also Horse Show Costume classes, with participants known to not only wear a costume themselves but decorate or even paint their horse to fit the theme accordingly. In 1967, Cathy Nicol Crair “spent many hours

transforming her horse into a zebra” for her Safari-themed look.

It was a time full of simple joys such as the anticipation of being able to show-off one’s hard work on a decorated float, to looking forward to saddling one’s horse in the morning or lacing candy colored streamers through the spokes of a bike. Then, at the end of the day, to breathe in a sunset’s sweet amber air as the sound of laughter danced down asphalt roads.

This year, with the coronavirus situation and “back-to-normal” date ever-changing, the state of the Fiesta is in the hands of L.A. County and its health and safety guidelines and is still up in the air. Nevertheless, there will certainly be a time again for all to share in these moments, that have evolved to include many other beloved events. For now, the early residents of Hidden Hills not only have the blessing to carry such fond memories of truly a blissful era, but through their photographs give us all a little piece of that magic. Evan Founder, Owner

VERNI FARMS

Verni family farm first started in 1923 in Fresno and Clovis California with their hallmark products olives and olive oil. Due to their success, they began growing produce from apples to nectarines, cherries, plums, peaches. Soon after drying all of the fruit in order to serve their customer’s growing interest in their produce, they began drying all of their produce as an additional option at the farmers market! “We take extra precaution in preserving the quality of our fruit so all our fruits are either dehydrated or sundried at the time of their season and stored at our very own farms. All our fresh fruits are certified from the sun-

ny state of California. Most recently we’ve decided to take our 300+ acres of olives to the next level by perfecting different varieties of almond butter. We currently offer cracked almond, raw almond, savory almond, and our most popular honey roasted almond butter in different sizes! They go great with your morning toast or as a fun dipping snack with our pink lady apples. So do not be shy and come join us at the many farmer’s markets we serve in the Los Angeles area!”

CERRO

SAN LUIS OBISPO

San Luis Obispo’s recently-opened Hotel Cerro transcends its appeal as a luxury getaway blending 19th century industrial and Mission architectural elements with 2lst century modern luxury. Designed and built towards LEED Silver specifications and developed with eco-friendly and sustainability-minded details, it is also aspirational on several levels.

The lobby is accessible from both Garden Street and the interior valet through its Mission Fig Patio. It channels a vintage apothecary, anchored by a front desk constructed from wood, stone and metal, and surrounded by floor-to-

Hotel Cerro’s 65 airy guest rooms and suites have clean lines and natural materials. The roomy residential-

style Penthouse Loft, situated on the second floor of one of the historic wings, features a double-sided fireplace between the bedroom and living room, a separate powder room and a bathroom with double-vanities and a deep soaking tub. Generous, original windows look out over Garden Street, and a brick wall, wood bow truss beams, polished cement floors and sliding barn doors provide a rustic contrast to the bespoke

modern furniture. With a dining area seating eight, wet bar and AV capabilities, the suite is also ideal for small meetings and receptions. Seven luxurious Garden Suites, defined by early 20th Century Spanish design elements, overlook the hotel’s Edible Garden via a private patio with personal fire bowl. Loft Suites incorporate original brick wall and bow truss details.

Kidney function is vitally important to all species, however cats in particular are especially sensitive to kidney disease. While there can be many types and causes of kidney disease, two common presentations are discussed below.

LILY TOXICITY

As Spring is upon us, we often strive to bring the beauty indoors by bringing flowers into our homes. Especially common this time of year, are lilies, particularly Easter lilies. Many don’t realize that many types of lilies are lethally toxic to cats. Just bringing lilies into your home can be deadly to your pet cat. Dogs generally do not suffer the same ill effects from lilies

as cats do. Cats are especially sensitive to the plant - even a small lick of pollen from the lily flower can be deadly.

Which types of lilies are toxic? The Easter lily, Stargazer lily, and Asiatic lily seem to be the most toxic, however any plant in the Lilium or Hemerocallis genus can be toxic. These plants contain a chemical that damages the kidneys resulting in kidney failure. Some cats who ingest the toxin may recover with treatment, but many affected cats do not, even with aggressive treatment measures. If you think your cat has ingested or come into contact with plant material from a Lily, contact your veterinarian immediately. Signs of toxicity include vomiting, nausea, lethargy, decreased appetite, and increased urination

or drinking. If you notice any of these signs, consider this an emergency and seek treatment for your cat immediately.

Most cats that come into contact with lilies are indoor cats that have been exposed to lilies inside the home, however for kitties that roam outdoors, these plants may be present in your yard or neighbor’s backyard. If you notice your pet is exhibiting any of the previously mentioned clinical signs, best to get them checked out just in case. Lilies are a beautiful way to celebrate the springtime, but keep them at a distance if you have a kitty in your household.

Dr. Allie grew up in Hidden Hills as an avid equestrian. She went on to receive her veterinary degree from University of California, Davis in 2017. She now practices as a mobile house call veterinarian seeing her patients, large and small, in the comfort of their own homes. drtashnek.com

CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE

Chronic Kidney Disease is often diagnosed in senior cats, resulting in a slow decline in kidney function. There are many possible contributing factors, with a similar end result of kidney failure. While there is no cure once the kidneys have been damaged, symptoms can be managed to give your cat the best quality of life possible. Clinical signs that you may notice include weight loss, poor coat quality, and increased urination and drinking. The first step in treatment is diagnosis. The earlier the diagnosis, the better the chances of helping your cat feel better. Bloodwork is the best way to diagnose kidney disease. As your cat ages, annual bloodwork is highly recommended to make sure that the kidneys, as well as other organs, are functioning as they should be.

The kidneys have many jobs in our body, but are very important in filtering toxins from blood, and in water conservation, urine production, and electrolyte balancing. If your vet determines that your cat is suffering from kidney disease, they will likely recommend a special diet. Diets low in protein and balanced in electrolytes can help reduce stress on the kidneys. Fluid therapy can also help the kidneys flush out toxins from the body.

While some cats may be predisposed to kidney disease, there are ways you can help your cat’s kidney health. Keeping

your cat well hydrated is very important. Many cats can be picky with how they drink water. Some cats prefer a certain dish, some prefer a fresh water fountain or faucet, while some only will drink if no other pet has shared the same bowl. It is important to always have fresh clean water offered to your cat, and offered in a way that they

will drink it. Wet canned food is also a great way to increase your cat’s water intake. Adequate water intake, and annual bloodwork are two of the most important ways you can care for your cat and their kidneys. HH
