Letter from the Publisher
This past month has marked a period of transformation for Calabasas Style Magazine. We were deeply honored to receive recognition from LA County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath at the Inaugural Small Business Recognition Breakfast. This nomination, made possible by the unwavering support of Lisa Clayden, CEO of the Calabasas Chamber of Commerce, was a significant moment for our publication. Representing Calabasas Style at such a prestigious event was not only a privilege but also a testament to the dedication and hard work of everyone involved with the magazine. We are truly humbled and grateful for this recognition, which underscores our commitment to the Calabasas community.
Calabasas Style has always been more than just a magazine; it’s a celebration of the people, businesses, and events that make our community unique. From the families who grace our covers to the advertisers who believe in our mission, the magazine is a reflection of the vibrant spirit of Calabasas. Our success is built on the collective efforts of many—those who organize and bring our community events to life, our supportive Mayor, City Council, and City management team, who work tirelessly to make our city a better place. We are grateful for their contributions and for the strong foundation they help provide.
I want to extend my deepest gratitude to you, our loyal readers. Your enthusiasm and support over the years have kept us inspired to continue sharing the stories that highlight the best of Calabasas. A special thank you goes to Lisa Clayden, not only for nominating us for this honor but also for her continuous dedication to our business community. Her inspiring speech, “A Day in the Life of Living in Calabasas,” is a must-read in this issue on page 52.
Speaking of cover families this month, we are thrilled to introduce the Cohen family. Dr. Sagi Jacob Cohen, his wife Shlomit, and their beautiful family embody the power of perseverance, self-sacrifice, and a shared vision of success. Their love and the bond they have cultivated over the years are truly inspiring. On August 29, they celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary, marking two decades of love, companionship, and cherished memories.
As we welcome a new academic year, this issue is dedicated to Education, Empowerment, and Enrichment. Our back-to-school special highlights the exceptional schools, education centers, and activities in the Calabasas area. We are proud to showcase the incredible community that supports our children, providing a nurturing environment where they can thrive.
When Gayle Barnes made the decision to sell Calabasas Style in 2022, she entrusted my husband and I with the legacy of this beloved publication. Since taking over in January 2023, I have had the privilege of selecting every cover family and participating in nearly every cover shoot alongside our talented photographer, Emily Scher. This close involvement has inspired a new feature that I’m excited to introduce: a behind-the-scenes series that will offer readers a glimpse into the creation of our covers, starting with some special moments with our families.
Ultimately, Calabasas Style is about fostering a community where everyone plays a vital role—whether it’s supporting our youth, our seniors, or each other in business and life. This is the essence of our magazine and the best part of our community. Attending the Mayor’s Luncheon, where Alicia Weintraub was honored, we heard from a panel of speakers, including our esteemed Captain Jen Seetoo, which filled me with immense pride. Knowing that we have such dedicated leaders committed to making our community safe, secure, and prosperous is truly heartwarming.
On behalf of everyone at Calabasas Style, we extend our heartfelt thanks to all our community leaders, advertisers, and loyal readers. Your continued support is deeply appreciated and essential to our success.

Does my child need planning?
Well...It Depends.
Planning for a Child with a Disability: Navigating Legal and Medical Complexities
Ioften encounter situations where legal and medical issues intersect in ways that can complicate a family’s ability to care for their child. Recently, I was contacted by a parent whose 13-year-old daughter had just been diagnosed with an illness leading to Disability. This situation, in addition to a general overhaul of family’s dynamic and planning, highlights an important but often overlooked aspect of California law: Parents’ access to their child’s medical information.
In California, Minor Consent and Confidentiality laws grant minors, beginning at age 12, certain rights to privacy regarding their healthcare. On a child’s 12th birthday, parental proxy access to medical information is automatically reduced from full access to limited access. This shift is designed to protect a minor’s right to confidential medical care but can create challenges for parents managing a child’s chronic condition and even test results and doctor’s appointments.
Estate planning becomes crucial here. Parents need to be proactive in understanding these laws and ensuring that their child’s needs are met without compromising the minor’s rights. One solution is to include a child’s medical authorization as part of their estate plan, allowing parents to retain the necessary access to manage their child’s condition effectively. Additionally, creating a Special Needs Trust, tailored to the minor’s specific needs, can offer peace of mind making sure that child will continue receiving public benefits.
For families with children who have disabilities, comprehensive estate planning is essential. Not only does it protect the child, but it also ensures that parents can continue to provide the necessary care and support, even as legal restrictions evolve with the child’s age. By addressing these issues early, families can avoid potential complications and ensure their child’s well-being is prioritized.
By addressing these issues promptly, we were able to ensure that they could continue to support their daughter without interruption. If you find yourself in a similar situation, seeking legal advice early can make all the difference. With the right planning, you can navigate the complexities of the law and ensure your child’s needs are fully met. My job is to educate; your job is to make the right decisions.

This year’s lineup featured performances by The Accidentals from Michigan and Boston native Adam Ezra. All shows took place at Peter Strauss Ranch, a hidden gem in the Santa Monica Mountains at the corner of Mulholland Highway and Troutdale Drive.
Tiny Porch President Mike Corridori describes the venue as “our version of the Hollywood Bowl, only much smaller, very rustic, and with no traffic. It’s a great place to relax and enjoy original music with friends and family. You might even dance a little.” Proceeds from the concerts support The Santa Monica Mountains Fund. Every weekend, Conejo Valley offers Cars & Coffee gatherings, each themed to an automotive genre. Hosted by Ferrari Westlake and Beverly Hills dealerships, owned by the Mattioli Automotive Group, this monthly event takes place in the rear parking area of The Lakes in Thousand Oaks. The event is not limited to Ferrari; other high-end exotics like Lamborghini, Porsche, and McLaren are also welcome, provided they are of a 'head-turning' caliber.
Among the Ferrari team present, Julie Warner, Ferrari Experience Manager, assists drivers in finding their parking location, while Jonathan Price, Ferrari Beverly Hills Sales, answers guests' questions about the new Ferraris on display. Piazza GranTurismo occurs on the third Sunday of each month from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. For more information, visit piazzagranturismo.com.

The Family Cohen
Power of Perserverance
Written by Lori Berezin and Hayley Mattson
TChe Cohen family confirms what we’ve known all along— America remains a land of opportunity. This is t true when you combine the power of perseverance with self-sacrifice and a vision of success.
Dr. Sagi Jacob Cohen immigrated to the United States from Israel as a young boy in 1989. His wife, Shlomit Cohen, Ph.D., was raised in Woodland Hills. They both grew up in the San Fernando Valley, where they continue to give back to the communities they love. They also possessed a clear picture of what their lives could be like. Today, that includes sharing their lovely Encino home with their beautiful family, two boys and two girls—Harel, 18; Leah, 15; Natalie, 13; and the light of everyone’s life, Kobe, age 2. Two regal and affectionate Rhodesian ridgebacks and two Siberian huskies complete the picture.

The Power ofPerserverance
The pandemic didn’t slow down this dedicated doctor; it only deepened his commitment to serving his community in its time of need. As a board-certified internal medicine physician, Dr. Cohen provided patient care at Providence Tarzana Medical Center, offering a calm and reassuring presence during the crisis. In October 2022, while maintaining his affiliation with the hospital, Dr. Cohen relocated his practice, Calabasas Medicine Group, to Calabasas.
To provide a more personalized and comprehensive healthcare experience, he adopted the concierge model. This approach enables him to dedicate more time to each patient, offering thorough and attentive care that surpasses the standard of traditional practices. Patients benefit from expanded healthcare services, non-rushed visits, expedited appointments, and highly customized preventive medicine.
Shlomit graduated from UCLA and earned her doctorate in Organizational Psychology from Alliant International University-Los Angeles. She has worked with Adtalem Global Education, a company operating universities within the medical and healthcare fields, for 17 years.
“We value a sense of community and togetherness.”
Additionally, she has taught organizational psychology part-time for 12 years. Before that, she was employed at Blake Management, a business and artist management firm in Calabasas. Ambitious by nature, this renaissance woman also freelances as an illustrator at Forever Legendz.
Of course, the couple’s number one passion project is their kids, who continue to thrive. Eldest son, Harel, attends CSUN as a business and real estate major. Like his father, Harel has a broad love of sports, ranging from basketball and football to martial arts, and weightlifting.
He looks forward to trying out for the CSUN basketball team and continuing his passion for Jiu-Jitsu mixed martial arts at a local private studio. His sister Leah attends Calabasas High School, where she excels as an honor student and a two-sport athlete, playing on both the volleyball and basketball teams. She plans to attend USC after graduation. Leah hopes to follow in her dad’s footsteps and become a physician. Natalie currently goes to Chime Charter in Woodland Hills. She clearly inherited her mom’s love of art, spending much of her time sketching and taking photos. Natalie plans to attend art school in the future to turn her cherished hobbies into a lifelong career. And then there is sweet 2-year-old Kobe, named after the legendary basketball player, who enjoys books, movies, learning, and playing with his friends at his Montessori school.
"We strive to share the joys of life with those around us.”
“Both of us, as parents, are firstgeneration college graduates who’ve overcome many obstacles,” notes Jacob. “We raise our kids to demonstrate integrity, respect all religions, and become lifelong learners. We’ve also adopted Kobe Bryant’s “Mamba” mentality—do your absolute best, work hard, and get better every day.” Jacob and Shlomit also teach their kids the importance of giving back to their community.
When not working or attending school, the family vacations in such idyllic spots as Oahu, lounging on pristine beaches and visiting iconic landmarks, including the Diamond Head Monument and Pearl Harbor Memorial. The proud parents also love attending their children’s myriad sporting events. Jacob also coached his son’s basketball team at Tarzana Park Recreation Center for a few years. An avid collector of shoes and sports memorabilia, Jacob’s hobbies include mountain biking, hiking, weightlifting, and playing basketball. Both parents cherish spending quality time with their kids. Whether they are enjoying a movie night at the Calabasas Commons, savoring a meal at Tel Aviv Grill in Woodland Hills, exploring the scenic trails of Malibu Creek, or relaxing under the sun at Zuma Beach, Jacob and Shlomit cherish every moment spent together. Their love for each other and their shared experiences have only grown stronger over the years. On August 29, they celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary, marking two decades of companionship, love, and countless cherished memories and family.
“We value a sense of community and togetherness,” explains the couple. “It gives us an opportunity to connect with people and feel part of something greater than ourselves. We strive to share the joys of life with those around us.”
DAY IN THE LIFE OF LIVING IN Calabasas A
Living in Calabasas offers a unique blend of luxury, community, and small-town charm, where each day is filled with vibrant local businesses and familiar faces. From starting your morning with a perfectly brewed coffee at a favorite café to winding down with friends at a cozy, happy hour spot, life in Calabasas is all about enjoying the finer things while staying connected with the people and places that make this city special. And who would know that better than Lisa Clayden, the President and CEO of the Calabasas Chamber, who shared this very sentiment speech at the Inaugural Small Business Awards in July.
Here is her speech.
Good morning! My name is Lisa Clayden, and I am the president and CEO of the Calabasas Chamber of Commerce.
We are delighted that Supervisor Horvath and her team chose King Gillette Ranch to hold such a wonderful event. This has been the stomping ground of the Calabasas Chamber since 1955—long
before the city was incorporated.
The Calabasas Chamber has supported our businesses for almost 70 years! As Supervisor Horvath mentioned, small businesses are the backbone of our community here in Calabasas.
You start your day by going to see Gideon at Pedalers Fork for your favorite coffee while your bike is getting a brake adjustment. Then, you pedal over to see Richard at Crumbl to get a fresh-baked cookie.
Before you head home, you stop by Blu Jam Café and ask Nora for their delicious crunchy French toast. Once home, you get your mail and open up the latest issue of Calabasas Style Magazine to read Hayley’s message and see her glossy photos. And look, Dr. Borhani is in there! So, you hop in your car and cruise over to get a glowing facial from Cristina at Skin Bio.
Afterwards, you receive a text on your phone—it’s Erin from Salon Nuuvo letting you know that Raychel is ready to give
you that glorious shampoo, cut, and style that you’ve been dreaming about. You walk out looking and feeling absolutely amazing! The next stop is to visit Shirin at Florentyna’s A Fine Flower Shop to pick up a gorgeous bouquet of flowers.
You then get on the 101 and head over to the Cambria Hotel to see Kristin and Richard. They love the flowers, AND you made it in time for happy hour.
The next morning, your first stop is getting that much-needed vitamin boost. You take your prescription to the Calabasas Pharmacy in Gelson’s Market and see Brenda—your friendly, neighborhood drug dealer.
And you thank her profusely and hop on Mulholland Highway to King Gillette Ranch, where you find yourself in company with some of the most incredible and inspiring people around.
This is Calabasas. This is what makes the Calabasas Chamber of Commerce so special. Thank you, Supervisor Horvath, for honoring all of these stellar businesses.
Stylish window treatments that feel right at home.

Supercar Sunday: SUMMER DAYS
Written and
Sby Dustin Troyan
upercar Sunday is a weekly car show that has been hosted in Woodland Hills since the early 2000s. This event, many believe, was the inspiration for “cars and coffee” style car events all over the world. The event is noted to bring the entire community together: Hot rods, classic cars, exotic cars, men, women, children, celebrities, politicians…Everyone goes to Supercar Sunday. From a socio-economic perspective, there might not be any that better illustrates the diversity of California than Supercar Sunday.
Fast Forward over twenty years later, Supercar Sunday is presented and sponsored by Porsche Woodland Hills, and the event happens every Sunday at Pierce College. The second Sunday of every month is a “Porsche Marque Day,” whereby Porsche Vehicles are highlighted, and Porsche Woodland Hills displays cars, has their brand ambassadors ready to answer any questions, and the General Manager Scott Stanley is always in attendance sharing his Porsche passion with attendees.
What you also need to know is that Supercar Sunday is so much more than a car show; it is a community. From Supercar Sunday came the Motor4Toys Charitable Foundation. Over the course of the last twenty years, Motor4Toys Charitable Foundation has collected and distributed over 6 million dollars of toys to children in need all over Southern California while operating at 100% charity.
Most recently, Supercar Sunday teamed up with Porsche Woodland Hills and the Supercar Sunday community, and they held a fundraiser at the car show, which in four hours brought in $120,000.00 that was divided equally to James Storehouse, Rancho San Antonio Boys Town and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Ventura County. And 100 percent of those proceeds went to the three agencies.

MAYORAL LUNCHEON FOR ALICIA WEINTRAUB
Photography by Scott Bogunia of StormLabs
On August 22, the Calabasas Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual Mayoral Luncheon at the Calabasas Country Club, bringing together local leaders, business owners, and community members for an afternoon of engaging dialogue and valuable insights. The event was highlighted by the recognition of Mayor Alicia Weintraub, who was honored for her dedicated service and exemplary leadership in both Calabasas and the broader Conejo Valley. The mayor’s unwavering commitment to fostering community engagement and ensuring the city’s growth and stability was celebrated by all in attendance.
The luncheon also featured a panel discussion with prominent local leaders. Joining Mayor Weintraub were Jennifer Seetoo, Lost Hills Sheriff’s Captain; Fred Gaines, former Mayor of Calabasas and current Chair of the Valley Economic Alliance; Michael Klein, Calabasas Community Development Director; and Jeremy Wolf, City of Agoura Hills Councilmember. The discussion, expertly moderated by Mike McNutt, Chair of the Calabasas Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, covered a range of pressing topics, including regional economic drivers, future economic stability, retail safety, and navigating business operations with the city. Attendees had the chance to engage directly with the panelists, making the event an invaluable platform for meaningful dialogue between the city’s leadership and the business community.
Mayor Weintraub expressed her deep gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between the city, local businesses, and residents to ensure the continued prosperity of Calabasas. The panelists reinforced this sentiment, underscoring the need for strong community partnerships to effectively address the challenges and opportunities facing the region. Lisa Clayden, President & CEO of the Calabasas Chamber of Commerce, along with her team, once again demonstrated outstanding dedication to fostering strong relationships within the community, ensuring the Mayoral Luncheon was a resounding success.

Car Collecting
Written and photographed by Dustin Troyan
Southern California is the global mecca for all things automotive. Due to the great weather, incredible canyon roads, and the passion of the car community, there is no better place to enjoy the hobby of car collecting. On any given day, there is a car show, car group, or car club hosting some type of driving event or gathering.
Collecting cars is an interesting hobby. Whether you have one car or a dozen, collecting the “right cars” has proven to be a great investment and also a great way to enjoy your investment. But you do have to buy the right car.
With the advent of social media, it was as if car collecting became the passion d’un jour. It seemed as if every classic Ferrari, Porsche and muscle car was instantly valued at tens of thousands of dollars more that it was previously. And the big auctions that have gotten global coverage, all of this helped to introduce millions of people to the intrinsic value of notable and collectible cars. But, it has to be the right car.
So, what makes it the right car? If you don’t know that, you had better ask an expert. And you had better be sure that your expert is actually an expert; otherwise, you can find that your “investment that you can drive” might actually be a depreciating asset. So, how does one know? Years of experience.
What I tell people who are interested in buying a classic or notable car, buy the car that you love. Buy the car that you dream of, buy the car that if you get “stuck with it” its ok and you can afford to hold on to it. Some people buy art they put on walls, some wear it on their wrists, and some of us drive our passion. And yes, this is my wife’s 1969 Mustang Fastback.
Saving MUSTANGS
Local Woman Rescues Hundreds of Horses from Slaughter and Abuse
By Judy Abel
Saving abused and neglected horses is the mission of a local woman, Clare Staples, who is so good at running her nonprofit she now has two locations in Malibu. As the founder and president of the rescue Skydog Sanctuary at Skydog Ranch, Staples grew the property in Corral Canyon to another Skydog location near Encinal Canyon.
After a career in the entertainment business, the Skydog founder has been devoting her life to rescuing horses and donkeys, one animal at a time, with the help of an army of hardworking volunteers.
Staples started her rescue after buying a horse with a branding on his neck. Researching that branding on her mustang led her to the “plight of the American Mustang in the West,” she said.
The situation isn’t pretty. “I realized how many of them were ending up in the slaughter pipeline at livestock auctions and kill pens,” Staples said. That startling news inspired her rescue and nonprofit in 2016. Her intention at the start was to just save “75 horses and call it good, but it turned into something much bigger,” she added.
Skydog Ranch now houses 20 horses and donkeys in Malibu. Between the two ranches, 300 more wild horses spend their days roaming and running free in Oregon on a massive 9,000-acre ranch near Bend.
It’s a beautiful story, as Staples explained, “We rescue those horses from really bad situations. We take special needs, seniors with medical issues, or ones that have landed in really abusive situations. We then get them back into good health and release them to freedom.”
Those animals with special needs requiring extra attention stay in Malibu in a smaller setting for their well-being. “They live a very comfortable life here in Malibu,” she said.
One reason for the success of Skydog is the thriving staff of volunteers who take good care of the horses and other animals and help nurse them back to health. “We have an enormous volunteer program,” Staples said. At times, there are up to a dozen volunteers who come to the Malibu ranches to groom the horses, bathe them, and even muck their stalls. “It’s an amazing
community of some of the most wonderful (people) that I’ve ever met in my life,” said the British-born Staples.
In the eight years the sanctuary has operated, Skydog has rescued more than 500 horses. Sometimes, the rescues occur in conjunction with other animal rescue groups, hoping to find forever homes for wild, abused, neglected, or sick equines.
“When we rescue a horse and ask for help, people are tso generous,” the founder mentioned about Skydog’s million followers on social media. “We tend to take horses and donkeys that stay forever, but we’ve rescued at least 250 horses in collaboration with other sanctuaries and rescues.”
Because Skydog operates as a sanctuary, the animals are not available for adoption. They live the rest of their lives at one of the three ranches.
“Our main goal is to re-wild these horses back out to as natural a setting as they can,” Staples said. “We rescue animals that need sanctuary placement. They’re either wild horses that have gone through numerous trainers and can’t adapt to domestic life, horses with expensive medical issues, and we focus on them. People who donate for a horse to come here get to follow them for the rest of their lives.”
Although we may not see it in Malibu, there are thousands of endangered horses in the West. Staples explained that “on U.S. public lands in nine western states, the Bureau of Land Management rounds up 20,000 wild horses a year. There are now more horses in government holding facilities than there are wild out on the range. They often end up in bad situations because they’re incredibly cheap to buy , and the BLM will pay you $1,000 to take a horse or donkey off their hands, many of which go into the slaughter pipeline. They’re sold in huge numbers at livestock auctions. There are way too many horses landing in the slaughter pipeline to be shipped to Mexico and Canada to be slaughtered for their meat.”
Skydog is advocating for legislation called “The Safe Act” to get passed. The bipartisan legislation would stop the shipment of horses across the border. “We don’t have slaughterhouses for horses in America. They were shut down many
years ago because America considers horses as companion animals , and, like dogs, they’re a huge part of our history. We founded this country with their help , and it’s really sad that nowadays, they’re being betrayed in such a massive way by our government. Our government lands are being cleared for extractive mining and to grass livestock for cattle ranching interests.”
Skydog is bombarded daily with emails concerning horses in this devastating pipeline. “We do everything we can,” Staples said. “We’ve rescued hundreds and we hope to continue and advocate for wild horses to stay on public lands so that there’s less of a strain on rescues.”
“It’s the greatest joy of my life to say ‘yes’ to a horse, which we’re continually doing,” she continued. “It’s an extraordinary thing to see a horse come to us in really horrible condition; they’re often starved, injured, or abused, and [we get] to bring them back to health and life! We have the most incredible team of vets and equine staff that take extraordinary care of these animals. To see them put on weight and come back to the horses they were born to be is such a privilege. These horses are the most extraordinary souls. It’s the most rewarding thing. There’s nothing as sustainable as the happiness involved in saving an animal’s life.
“We have some of the most beautiful wild horses in America at our sanctuary as well as abandoned, unwanted, unloved horses that ended up in a bad situation that are now running with herds of wild horses, really demonstrating the beauty of wild horses in America and being ambassadors for all the wild horses that are still stuck in holding pens or the slaughter pipeline. It’s the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done.”

Sustainable
FashionTrends
By Lori Berezin
We rent cars, apartments, vacation homes…why not clothing? Renting a single piece of clothing can save energy, water, and CO2 emissions when compared to purchasing a new one. It can also extend its life cycle. But is it truly sustainable?
Rent the Runway co-founders Jennifer Hyman and Jenny Fleiss started the clothing rental trend in 2009 when they opened a pop-up shop at Harvard University to save students money. Their business eventually grew into an online subscription model. It was especially helpful for people needing an expensive outfit for a special event or maternity wear that they’d quickly outgrow. Clothing rental has since grown into a billion-dollar industry.
Today, you can find myriad rental platforms, including Nuuly, Armoire, and Switch. Subscription models usually offer a monthly plan with a variety of options, depending upon how many pieces you wish to rent. The companies handle the cleaning and
provide pre-paid return shipping.
“Peer-to-peer” businesses, such as Rotate Your Closet, Wardrobe, and Rotation, encourage people to earn money by renting out their own clothes. These companies may be more eco-friendly than inventory-based companies since they eliminate the middle person and excess stock, and encourage people to rotate more and purchase less.
Is the rental market really helping the environment? Since the majority of emissions occur during a garment’s production, prolonging its life by as little as a year can reduce its environmental footprint by as much as 20%. However, the delivery methods and detergents used also play a factor. A better solution might be to simply buy less and only rent special occasion-type clothing. When you do purchase a garment, buy from companies that maintain ethical, eco-friendly practices, as well as safe working conditions for their employees. That way, sustainable fashion is a win-win for all, including mother earth.

The Smile Spa also stays up-to-date with the latest technology. Both Dr. Joelle and Dr. Shawn are licensed in IV sedation, enabling them to treat the elderly, those with special needs or severe dental phobia, as well as the general public. Patients looking to brighten their smile can choose from an array of cosmetic procedures, including veneers and Lumineers®—a thin porcelain shell that fits atop your teeth—bite alignment using Invisalign®, and natural-looking whitening treatments. They also provide care for temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ) and offer dental implants to replace damaged or missing teeth.

Dr. Joelle emphasizes the importance of oral health in relation to overall well-being. “Gingivitis and periodontal disease can cause infections that lead to tooth and jawbone loss, bite changes, and other complications,” she explains. “Oral bacteria can spark inflammatory responses throughout the body.” She encourages patients to take preventative measures such as regular dental cleanings, oral exams, brushing, and flossing to prevent the spread of harmful bacteria and related diseases.
Both Dr. Shawn and Dr. Joelle earned their Bachelor of Science degrees in Biology from the University of California, San Diego, and their Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degrees from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry. After graduation, Dr. Shawn pursued continuing education with a focus on surgery and implantology, allowing him to offer innovative dental treatments. He is also passionate about volunteering and has participated in various dental humanitarian missions around the world with the U.S. Navy.
Dr. Joelle is dedicated to creating beautiful, healthy smiles. With her keen eye for detail and artistic talent, she delivers natural and aesthetically pleasing results. Fashion Influencers
Redefining Trendsetting and Consumer Engagement in the Digital Age
By Elizabeth Hickcox
In the rapidly evolving fashion industry, influencers have emerged as key figures in shaping trends, promoting brands, and influencing consumer choices. These digital tastemakers have broken traditional barriers, reshaping how brands connect with audiences. Once on the periphery of fashion shows, influencers are now central figures representing premium, fast fashion, and even luxury labels. With substantial followings on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, they wield considerable power in the fashion world.
A key factor that sets influencers apart from traditional celebrities is their perceived authenticity. Unlike celebrities who often maintain a curated public image, influencers share personal stories, experiences, and unfiltered moments with their followers. This authenticity fosters a deep sense of connection, making their endorsements and fashion advice more relatable and trusted. Audiences highly value this
authenticity, which enhances the effectiveness of influencer marketing campaigns within the fashion industry.
The direct and interactive nature of social media platforms allows influencers to engage with their audience in real time. According to a recent survey done in 2023, which included 24,000 respondents, Instagram was identified as the most effective platform for showcasing authentic fashion content that resonates with consumers. Influencers utilize features like comments, polls, and Q&A sessions to create a two-way dialogue, fostering a sense of community among their followers. This engagement not only strengthens the influencer’s connection with their audience but also significantly influences consumer purchasing decisions. Followers are more inclined to trust recommendations from influencers, whom they perceive as peers rather than distant celebrities.
In essence, fashion influencers have democratized trendsetting, transforming it from an exclusive domain of fashion elites to a more inclusive and dynamic process. Their influence extends beyond merely setting trends; they shape brand collaborations and consumer engagement, reflecting the diverse tastes of a global audience and continuously shaping the future of fashion.

THE SECRET GLOWING SKIN TO
Korean Skincare and the Magic of Collagen Masks
By Aimee Kvandal MSN, APRN, FNP-C Clinical nurse practitioner supervisor and aesthetic provider
As a nurse practitioner with years of experience in healthcare, I’ve seen firsthand how the right approach to skin care can make a world of difference. Our skin is not just a barrier; it’s a living, breathing organ that reflects our overall health. Today, I’d like to share insights into one of the most revered skincare routines in the world—Korean skincare— and, specifically, the role of collagen masks in achieving that coveted, youthful glow.
The Allure of Korean Skincare
Korean skincare has taken the beauty world by storm, and for good reason. Rooted in centuries-old traditions, this regimen is all about prevention and maintenance. Unlike some Western routines that focus on covering up imperfections, Korean skincare emphasizes nourishing the skin, keeping it hydrated, and protecting it from environmental damage. This proactive approach helps maintain a healthy complexion over time, rather than just treating issues as they arise.
The Role of Collagen in Skin Health
Collagen is a protein that our bodies naturally produce. It’s like the scaffolding for our skin, giving it structure and keeping it firm and elastic. Unfortunately, as we age, our collagen production slows down, leading to wrinkles, sagging, and dryness. This is where collagen masks come into play.
How Collagen Masks Work
Collagen masks are an easy and effective way to give your skin a direct boost of hydration and firmness. These masks are infused with collagen, which helps to plump the skin and fill in fine lines temporarily. While the collagen in these masks doesn’t directly penetrate to the deeper layers of the skin, it does create a moisture barrier on the surface, which helps the skin retain its natural hydration.
Think of it as giving your skin a drink of water that lasts all day. By keeping
your skin hydrated, you’re not only giving it a healthy glow but also helping to prevent the development of new wrinkles.
Why Hydration is Key
You’ve probably heard it a million times, “Drink more water!” But while staying hydrated internally is crucial, it’s also essential to ensure your skin stays hydrated on the outside. Dehydrated skin can look dull, feel rough, and show signs of aging more quickly.
Collagen masks work by providing an intense dose of hydration. The moisture they deliver can soothe and calm irritated skin, making these masks particularly beneficial for those with sensitive skin. Additionally, well-hydrated skin is more resilient and better equipped to handle environmental stressors like pollution and sun exposure.
Incorporating Collagen Masks into Your Routine
So, how do you make the most of collagen masks? It’s simpler than you might think. I recommend using a collagen mask once or twice a week, especially after a day when your skin has been exposed to harsh elements or if you’re noticing it looks a bit tired.
Apply the mask to clean, dry skin, and let it sit for about 15-20 minutes. During this time, the collagen and other nourishing ingredients will work their magic. After removing the mask, gently pat any remaining essence into your skin—no need to rinse it off. Finish with your favorite moisturizer to lock in all that goodness.
Final Thoughts
As a nurse practitioner, I’m always looking for ways to help my patients (and myself!) maintain healthy, radiant skin. Korean skincare, with its emphasis on hydration and preventative care, aligns perfectly with this goal. Collagen masks are a wonderful addition to any skincare routine, offering a simple yet powerful way to keep your skin looking and feeling its best.
Remember, beautiful skin is healthy skin. By incorporating collagen masks into your routine, you’re not just pampering yourself—you’re giving your skin the care it needs to stay vibrant and resilient. And that’s something worth celebrating.
Stay hydrated, stay glowing, and embrace the journey to healthy, beautiful skin.
AOF TALLOW Benefits +HONEY BALM
B12 D
By Lori Berezin
When it comes to skincare, there’s always a new product waiting to be discovered. Tallow and honey balm currently fits the bill. While many are already familiar with honey’s miraculous healing properties, some may be surprised by the added benefits of tallow.
Combined with honey in skincare products, tallow, from animal fat, adds nutrients, such as vitamins A, B12, D, E, K, plus fatty acids, to enhance your skin. Tallow, like honey, also contains antimicrobial and antiinflammatory properties. Of course, vegans, vegetarians, and those who prefer plant-based products should look elsewhere. The rest of us may benefit from adding tallow and honey balm to our skincare routine.
The best tallow is derived from grassfed, not grain-fed, cattle. Since the chemical makeup of tallow is remarkably similar to the oils already produced by our skin, it is readily absorbed. It also packs a punch when it comes to hydrating skin without
clogging pores. Combined with rejuvenating honey, considered one of the best natural skincare ingredients on the planet, this dynamic duo helps relieve redness, eczema, and sunburn. It also helps diminish fine lines and wrinkles, while brightening skin tone.
You can find plenty of DIY recipes for crafting this potent combo online. Or you can simply purchase ready-made balm and give it a try. This current tallow and honey trend is actually backed by a long history of using natural ingredients in skincare. In fact, tallow usage dates back to ancient Rome and Egypt, where it was considered a miracle cure for burns and other skin-related issues. It was also a common household item just a few hundred years ago, used to make soap and various skincare products.
With SoCal’s low humidity levels, tallow and honey balm can be a blessing for chapped lips and dry skin. Massage a bit onto your cuticles and nails to encourage growth and ease dryness. You can also make your locks look even lovelier by using this combo as a deep conditioner. Whichever ways you use it, tallow and honey balm clearly beautify your skin to brighten your day.
The ADU:
The
trend that’s here to
stay
Style Trends
by Julia Wong
Ibought my dream home! Over the next several months I will be sharing with you my dream home. It was built in 1925 and is a classic Hollywood Mediterranean. What attracted me to the home was the old Hollywood glamour that the house evokes. To maximize the living space and build on the romance of the historic main house, I am building an ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) on the property.
With California’s housing shortage, restrictions for ADUs have been relaxed, making them a popular trend that is here to stay.
It was important to me that we maintained the home’s architectural integrity and that the two structures complimented each other. For this reason, I chose Marc Appleton, Appleton Partners, LLC. to be the architect on the project. Marc has designed over 850 projects and is responsible for defining the California coastal aesthetic. He’s been featured extensively in many industry publications and has designed the Rosewood Miramar Beach Hotel, San Ysidro Ranch, and the San Vicente Bungalows.
Marc is a master at both contemporary and traditional architecture and I was confident he would be the perfect partner in striking a balance between the original historic home and the new construction.
Design
From the onset clear goals were established for how the ADU was going to be used. These early discussions were key in driving the look and feel of the ADU. I envisioned a space that would be used as a home office. I wanted a meeting space to share designs with clients in a beautiful environment, and I wanted the structure to open up to the backyard and the beautiful pool so that it could used for entertaining friends and family.
The final design has a main space with a large kitchen and giant skylight, giving me lots of natural light for presentations, and three nine-foot tall French doors that open up to the yard for entertaining. To blur the boundaries between the indoor and outdoor spaces, I chose Dekton by Cosentino in the color Argentium. The neutral limestone hue has it wonderful movement and texture you don’t normally see in engineered stone. And the beauty of Consentino is its durability, perfect for both indoor and outdoor applications. I designed
modern cabinetry with clean lines in rift oak that complement the stone and add warmth to the space. The ADU also features an office with lots of storage and an ADA-compliant bathroom to accommodate any friends or family members with special needs. And solar panels will be installed on the roof to offset the property’s carbon footprint.
I’m still at the very start of this design journey, but I will share with you the challenges built into restoring and preserving a 99-year-old house with all of the modern luxuries we crave and all with sustainability in mind.

WCHANGING DÉCOR WITH THE Autumn SEASON
hile summers in Southern California seem to last forever, they do eventually ease into lovely autumn days. As early as August, kids head back to school, and stores display Halloween items. Now that September is here, you may want to put out the pumpkins and start preparing for shorter days and cooler nights of Autumn.
Cozy is one word that comes to mind with the changing seasons. Consider creating a comfy nook for reading, studying, or arts and crafts in your home. Spruce up the living room with flowers in terracotta pots or pumpkins. Place throw pillows and blankets displaying fall colors, such as burgundy, yellow, orange, and burnt umber, on couches and chairs. Incorporate woven baskets into the décor to hold magazines and more. You can even hang pretty baskets on the wall.
Natural items and textures, such as apples, leaves, and gourds, add a colorful touch to your table. Combined with small candles in glass or mini-pumpkin votives, they create the perfect ambiance for family dinners and holiday
gatherings. Create a modern cornucopia centerpiece with fresh fruits and veggies harvested from your garden or local farmer's market. Or fashion a tray of apples, seashells, and moss for a unique tabletop display.
And don’t forget the front door, where you can place a wreath of dried flowers and eucalyptus, or showcase calico corn garlands that remind us of Thanksgiving. Your home’s gateway provides the perfect entre into the season. Get creative with carved pumpkins stacked thoughtfully on the porch. Use them as planters for colorful chrysanthemums and pansies. As we get closer to Halloween, consider adding spookier elements, such as skeletons, spiders, ghosts, and goblins, that remind us of the holidays of our youth.
Consider holding holiday dinners outside. Use rustic centerpieces and paper plates for a festive family picnic. Dine by candlelight, inside or out. Utilize candles with subtle fall scents of pumpkin or cinnamon. Finally, say “good-bye” to summer and welcome the season with an “Autumn” sign or mat by the front door.

Tara Davis-Woodhall Agoura High’s Leaps to Olympic Gold
By Hayley Mattson
Tara Davis-Woodhall, an Agoura High School graduate and long-jump sensation, made history at the 2024 Olympics by winning her first gold medal. With a leap of 7.10 meters, she outperformed the reigning Olympic champion and secured her place at the top of the podium. The victory was the culmination of years of hard work, resilience, and a journey that started when she was just a teenager.
At 17, Davis-Woodhall was a track and field prodigy, a name synonymous with success at Agoura High. She set the American Junior and national high school long jump record in 2017 with a mark of 21 feet, 11 inches, and held multiple California records in both the hurdles and long jump. Her dominance on the track was unmatched, earning her the title of MaxPreps Female High School Athlete of the Year in 2017. Davis-Woodhall’s achievements extended internationally, as she claimed titles at the Pan-American U-20 Championships and the World Youth Championships.
In the second round of the final, Davis-Woodhall took the lead with a jump of 23 feet, 1¾ inches, a distance that remained unchallenged. She extended her lead with a third-round leap of 23 feet, 3½ inches, securing her gold medal. Her victory was sealed when Germany’s defending champion, Malaika Mihambo, was unable to surpass Davis-Woodhall’s mark.
However, despite her early promise, Davis-Woodhall's journey was far from smooth. Written off by many at 19, she faced moments of doubt that nearly led her to step away from the sport entirely. But her passion and determination never waned, and at the Olympics, she delivered a performance for the ages.
Known for her energetic personality and iconic cowboy hat, Davis-Woodhall is more than just an athlete; she's a social sensation and an inspiration to many. Married to Paralympian Hunter Woodhall, she embodies resilience and grace. As she stood on the Olympic podium, Davis-Woodhall realized a dream that had been years in the making, a dream she once carried as a young girl in Agoura Hills.

Tom Shaar Claims Silver In Skateboarding’s Olympic Debut at Paris 2024
By Barbara Burke
Being part of Team USA for skateboarding at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris was a "pretty crazy and a lifetime opportunity" for Malibu’s Tom Schaar, especially since it marked the first time the sport was included in the Games. On August 7, Schaar claimed the silver medal in men’s park skateboarding, scoring an impressive 92.23. He finished just behind his close friend, Australia’s Keegan Palmer, who took the gold with a score of 93.11. Brazil's Augusto Akio secured the bronze medal. Schaar became the third U.S. skater to win a medal at the Paris Games.
Reflecting on his Olympic experience, Schaar expressed his excitement, saying, “I think people are fully embracing skateboarding in the Olympics. Paris definitely showed us love!” Adding to the thrill, Schaar had a memorable encounter with Snoop Dogg, who congratulated him after his second run in the finals while “Still D.R.E.” played in the background—an unforgettable moment for the 24-year-old skater.Heading into the Paris Games, Schaar was ranked fourth in the world, alongside fellow U.S. skaters Tate Carew and Gavin Bottger, who were ranked first and third, respectively. Both Schaar and Carew advanced to the eight-skater final, with Schaar finishing second and Carew in fourth.
In the final, Schaar delivered a strong first run, performing a tailgrab 540 and an alley-oop kickflip Indy, which earned him a score of 90.11 and briefly put him in first place. The competition was fierce as Schaar and Palmer traded places at the top. Schaar’s second run featured a heelflip Indy, an alley-oop 540, and a kickflip Indy to fakie, with skateboarding legend Tony Hawk cheering him on from the sidelines. Hawk, a longtime admirer of Schaar, had earlier welcomed him to the Birdhouse Skateboards team.
Schaar first made headlines in 2012 when he landed the first-ever 1080 on a mega ramp—a feat that solidified his reputation in the skateboarding world. Hawk has since praised him as "the best all-around transition skater there is."
As for the future, Schaar hopes to compete in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, drawing inspiration from British X Games veteran Andy MacDonald, who competed in Paris at the age of 51.
Brayden Cole Hinck was a beacon of light and resilience. At just 10 years old, Brayden's life took a harrowing turn when he was diagnosed with a rare brain cancer. Despite undergoing brain surgery, 30 radiation treatments, and oral chemotherapy, he never let his condition overshadow his joy. With his ever-present smile, he continued to attend school, play basketball, and inspire everyone around him.
A Legacy of Hope and Change
By Hayley Mattson
Tragically, Brayden's battle continued when he was diagnosed with leptomeningeal disease, a devastating cancer affecting the cerebrospinal fluid. He passed away this year on May 28, just shy of his 12th birthday.
During Brayden's final months, he spent nearly seven weeks as an in-patient at Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). His family was fortunate enough to be together through this ordeal, supported by good health insurance, understanding employers, and family help. However, they witnessed firsthand the struggles of families who faced significant challenges, such as not being able to stay with their sick children due to financial constraints or single-parent responsibilities. They also discovered that federal funding for pediatric cancer research is shockingly inadequate, with only four percent of the annual cancer research budget dedicated to children’s cancer—less than $3 per child.
In response to these challenges, The Brayden Cole Hinck Foundation was established with a clear mission: to financially assist families whose children are undergoing cancer treatment, fund research for pediatric brain cancer, and inspire others to “Be Like B.” By honoring Brayden’s courage, the foundation seeks to provide crucial support and drive meaningful change in the fight against pediatric cancer. How to Get Your Family Involved in Community Charities BUILDING BONDS AND GIVING BACK
By Hayley Mattson
Getting involved in community charities and organizations in Calabasas is a fantastic way to connect with your neighbors, give back to the community, and instill important values in your children. Engaging as a family not only strengthens your bonds but also teaches children the importance of empathy, responsibility, and active citizenship.
Find the Right Cause
Our community offers a variety of local charities and organizations catering to different interests and causes. Whether it’s environmental conservation, helping the homeless, or supporting local schools, finding a cause that resonates with your family is the first step. Involving your children in this decision-making process can make them feel more connected and invested in the cause.
Start Small
For families new to volunteering, starting with smaller commitments can ease everyone into the routine. Organizations like The Foundation for Las Virgenes Schools or The Calabasas Classic 5k Run/ Walk for Heros of Childhood Cancer often have events where families can participate in activities like setting up fundraisers or helping at community events. These opportunities are not only rewarding but also relatively easy to fit into a busy family schedule.
Make It Fun
Volunteering doesn’t have to feel like a chore. Many local organizations, such as the Calabasas Environmental Commission, host events like park cleanups or tree planting, which can be fun, educational, and physically engaging for kids. Turning volunteering into a fun
family outing can make it a regular and enjoyable part of your routine.
Teach Responsibilit y
Volunteering offers a practical way to teach children about responsibility. By giving them specific tasks, like collecting donations or helping organize an event, they learn the importance of following through on commitments. For older kids, this can also be a valuable addition to their college applications.
Create a Family Tradition
Consider making volunteering a regular family tradition, whether it’s participating in an annual charity event or volunteering at a local food bank during the holidays. Over time, this tradition can become a cherished part of your family’s life, creating lasting memories and a deep connection to your community.

Conversation with Retired School Teacher A+
Susan Sonne Shares Tips for a Successful Back-to-School Transition
We are in the last stint of summer, and that means the new school year is right around the corner. Calabasas Style Magazine sat with retired California school teacher Susan Sonne and asked her how students can prepare to go back to school this year.
How important is it for students to establish a routine or schedule before the school year starts? Can you offer any specific strategies or tips for effective time management?
Starting back to school takes some adjustment to your summer schedule. Work on getting your sleep schedule back on school time. Start small, go to bed 15 minutes earlier, and also start your mornings 15 minutes earlier. Sleep is very important; only a rested mind can learn.
Do you recommend any organizational tools or techniques for students to keep track of assignments, deadlines, and important dates?
Organization is so important; you can get things done faster and easier. It may sound old-fashioned, but a wall calendar or desk planner is a great way to stay on top of all upcoming deadlines. Check it daily, crossing off things as they are completed and adding any new assignments.
What can students do to set goals for the upcoming school year? Are there any strategies you recommend for goal setting and tracking progress?
Goals are important for us all. Break down goals into smaller chunks; Have to read a book? Break it into how many pages per day. Math facts? Start with just a few until mastered, etc. Celebrate and reward each small goal.
What role can parents or guardians play in helping students prepare for the new school year? Are there any specific ways they can support their child’s readiness?
Preparing for the new school year should be an exciting time. Talk to your student about any fears, concerns, or expectations they have about the new year. Reassure them that their classmates are feeling the same way, and it is going to be a great year.
Are there any specific study strategies or techniques that you encourage students to use to maximize their learning potential?
The strategies and techniques employed in teaching depend on the individual student’s learning style. By utilizing a range of methods, such as visual, auditory, and tactile approaches, you can identify which ones resonate best with your student. For instance, a pause-and-discuss technique can be employed when aiming to engage in critical thinking while watching a TV program.
Pause the program and ask questions like, “What do you think will happen next?” and “What makes you think that?” This encourages the student to make predictions based on their observation and analysis. Subsequently, you can compare the student’s predictions with the actual outcome, allowing the student to identify any missed information or factors that influenced their incorrect prediction. This exercise promotes critical thinking skills and enhances the student’s ability to comprehend and analyze the content effectively.
Are there any additional tips, advice, or suggestions you have for students to make the most out of their return to school?
Don’t compare your student to others. Make sure to praise their accomplishments and support them to understand their failures. We often learn more from our mistakes. Students remember to have fun at school! You have the power to make your days what you want them to be with your attitude. Make it a great year!

IQ EQ vs.
Which Holds the Key to Life Success?
By Margie Chiang, Education Coach
As an education coach, parents frequently ask me: "Which is more important for my child's future success —IQ or EQ?"
This inquiry prompts me to pause, drawing upon my background in leadership development, where I have worked closely with solid executives who have evolved into accomplished business leaders. In addressing this query, I view it from a comprehensive, longterm perspective, recognizing that life achievements result from a multifaceted interplay of factors.
Intelligence Quotient (IQ) and Emotional Quotient (EQ) play roles in overall success, health, wellness, and happiness. It is not assigning dominance to one over the other but rather acknowledging the value inherent in nurturing proficiency across multiple domains. This stance aligns with the ethos of numerous American universities, which embrace wellrounded individuals, exemplifying scholarly excellence and exhibiting leadership acumen in their passions and dedicated involvement in community service.
What is IQ vs. EQ?
IQ, or Intelligence Quotient, is a measure of cognitive ability and intellectual potential. It gauges reasoning, problem-solving, and learning aptitude. IQ tests compare an individual's performance with others of the same age, offering insight into their intellectual strengths and areas for development. This number shares how far above or below their peer group people stand in intellectual ability. In all cases, the peer group's average score or average IQ is 100.
Those who are geniuses have a very high IQ. Experts believe that Albert Einstein had an IQ of between 160 and 180.
People with a score of at least 140 are considered to be geniuses.
IQ demonstrates abilities such as:
• Logical reasoning
• Knowledge of the world
• Visual and spatial processing
• Working memory and short-term memory
• Quantitative reasoning
EQ, Emotional Quotient, refers to a person's ability to evaluate, manage and express emotions. Researchers such as John Mayer and Peter Salovey and psychologist/ author Daniel Goleman have espoused emotional intelligence, catapulting the concept in education and business management.
EQ demonstrates abilities such as:
• Identifying emotions
• Evaluating how others feel
• Managing one's own emotions
• Empathizing with others
• Leveraging emotions to facilitate communications
In the past, IQ was considered the only determinant of success. The assumption was that high-IQ individuals were destined for accomplished lives. Yet critics began to realize that a high IQ does not guarantee life success.
IQ is a narrow concept that must fully appreciate human abilities' breadth and complexity. That said, IQ is still recognized as a vital element of success, particularly regarding academic achievement. But today, experts acknowledge that IQ is not the only variable that determines life success.
Since Goleman mainstreamed emotional intelligence, the importance of it has become widely validated – especially in the business world. "While the question of which is more important, IQ or EQ, is often asked, the answer is quite complex and not particularly helpful. It is like asking which is more important, the heart or the lungs. They are both important, and the more relevant question might be, how they are important and, to what degree are they connected to each other?" (1)
Goleman shares that IQ may help us get the job from a technical competency level, but our EQ helps us advance throughout our careers. As we progress, our tasks shift us from participant to leader. In a leadership role, we must connect with others to accomplish goals. Nobel prize-winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman believes that we buy from people we trust and may even pay more for the psychological safety of working with someone we trust. Studies on the success of salespeople have validated this. Much of our success comes from an authentic ability to connect with others.
Can EQ be learned? Absolutely.
"Strategies for teaching emotional intelligence include character education, modeling positive behaviors, encouraging people to think about how others are feeling, and finding ways to be more empathetic toward others." (2)
Cultivating Emotional Intelligence (EQ) in children is paramount for their holistic growth and future success, spanning personal and professional realms. As parents, you play a pivotal role in shaping your children's emotional development. Here are some tips on fostering EQ:
Leading by Example: Children glean valuable insights from your actions and reactions. Showcase emotional intelligence by managing emotions constructively, embodying empathy, understanding, and effective communication.
Facilitating Open Dialogue: Foster an atmosphere where your child feels safe expressing their emotions. Please encourage them to share their feelings openly, without judgment or criticism.
Active Listening Skills: Instill the significance of active listening by genuinely engaging with their thoughts. This fosters their understanding that their emotions and ideas are essential.
Nurturing Empathy: Cultivating empathy in your child involves promoting an understanding of others' emotions and viewpoints. However, the most influential method is to exemplify empathy by genuinely attempting to comprehend your child's perspective—stepping into their shoes and appreciating their point of view.
In summary, IQ and EQ intricately contribute to overall success, nurturing both life accomplishments and holistic wellbeing. Rather than comparing, the value lies in cultivating balanced proficiency across both. As we prepare our children for life's challenges, research, and experience demonstrate that cultivating both dimensions equips them for a world that demands multifaceted skills and empathetic leadership.

Navigating Technology in Our Schools
Governor Gavin Newsom recently called upon California’s secondary schools to restrict students’ cell phone usage. He cited studies noting smartphone’s potential negative impact on student learning and mental health. Others against smartphone usage during school hours note such issues such as online bullying and overuse of social media, which are detrimental to student’s mental health.
In June 2024, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) school board voted 5-2 to create a no-phone policy beginning January 2025. Whether the Las Virgenes Unified School District (LVUSD) will enact a similar plan is yet to be seen. Calabasas High School already maintains a “low-tech” campus. Although their guidelines allow smartphone use for both teachers and students, they maintain smartphones should be “powered off during classroom instruction unless permitted by the teacher for instructional purposes.”
While several states have already enforced smartphone bans, many parents and schools are already pushing back. Parents’ main concern is to be able to instantly communicate with
their kids and vice versa. Many seem okay with phones being powered off as long as they’re within easy reach.
A larger discussion remains how best to balance student safety with expanding technology in our schools. Parents, teachers, and students can find a wealth of information on this subject at lvusd.org, including the district’s initiative, “Forward Learning,” which focuses on helping students thrive through technology. Navigating this digital landscape really begins at home, where kids can educate their parents about how technology is being used in their classrooms and parents can set guidelines. Parents can also speak with teachers to better understand what software is being used, and what they can do at home to help ensure these resources are available and not misused.
When E.T. utters, “phone home,” in that classic movie, he echoes the primal urge for connection. An ongoing dialogue between parents, students, and teachers fosters the best environment for managing this ever-changing world of technology. And the good news is you don’t even need a smartphone or computer to keep the lines of communication open.

Calabasas Pediatrics Tips for School Success PEDIATRICIAN
Health and school success should be at the top of every parent’s mind. Lifestyle choices, including nutrition and sleep, play a major role in school performance. To ensure your kids are on track for a healthy, happy, and successful school year, we’d like to share our best back-to-school tips with you.
SEVEN SS FOR SCHOOL SUCCESS
1. SLEEP
During the summer, kids stay up later—whether running around the neighborhood or playing video games—and it’s now time to start moving that bedtime up by 15 minutes every few days until you reach an appropriate school-night bedtime. Kids need at least 10 hours of sleep—teens too! Three days before school starts, set an alarm, wake your kids up lovingly, and practice your morning routine. With a few days of practice, the first morning of school should run smoothly.
2. SCREENS
Summertime often means more screen time. Sit down as a family now and discuss school-day media use and screen-time rules. That may mean a limit of one to two hours per night (official American Academy of Pediatrics maximum recommendation) or no screens at all on school nights. Make sure you have screen-free zones in your home, such as the kitchen table and the beds. Set an electronic curfew, meaning that an hour before bedtime all screens get turned off and charged out of the bedroom so as not to interfere with sleep.
3. SUGAR AND SNACKS
When school is out, kids often eat more “fun” foods, but on school days, healthy, protein-rich meals are critically important to help kids concentrate and stay energized longer. Try to decrease or eliminate sugar in the morning and feed your kids a healthy, protein-rich breakfast to start the day off right. Good options are eggs, dairy products, nut butters, and whole-grain bread. Pack healthy snacks and a refillable water bottle with plain water for the school day.
4. SHOTS
Every child needs to be up to date on vaccines; it’s a California state law. Touch base with your pediatrician and get your child checked out from head to toe, brain and mental health included. Your kids can’t learn if they aren’t healthy, focused, and mentally prepared.
5. SUPPLIES
Be sure to pick a backpack with padded straps that isn’t going to be too heavy (not more than a ¼ of your child’s body weight). Some students prefer rolling backpacks. Just keep in mind that these can be difficult to fit in lockers and carry upstairs.
6. STUDY SPACE
Your kids need a clean, quiet, and organized space to do their homework and study. Whether it’s a bedroom desk or the kitchen table, keeping it clutter-free and without distractions will help your kids stay focused and engaged in their work.
7. STRESS
Beginning the school year can be a stressful time for everyone. Talk to your kids about any concerns they may have and discuss the schoolday routine. Re-introduce them to old friends and encourage them to make new friends too. A few days before school starts, go to the school and get a “lay of the land” so that your children feel more comfortable on the first day.
If your family needs help with any of these tips or health or wellness issues, let us know. At Calabasas Pediatrics Wellness Center, we specialize in helping all kids and teens be healthy, welladjusted, and successful students.
Lessons From Research: How Parents Can Help Prevent Eating Disorders
By Leslie Kaplan, MD
Eating disorders are serious psychological disorders with dangerous medical consequences. Typically, the whole family suffers when their loved one struggles with an eating disorder. Fortunately, there are some lessons from research that parents can utilize to support a healthy relationship with food and help prevent eating disorders:
1. Have regular family meals. Studies show that having frequent family dinners decreases the risk of eating disorders as well as the risk of adolescent substance use, violence, depression, suicide, and school problems.
2. Discourage/disallow dieting. Restrictive dieting is one of the strongest predictors of an eating disorder. Not only does restrictive dieting lower your metabolism and necessitate further food restriction to achieve weight loss, but the deprivation mentality can potentially trigger binge eating. “Yo–yo” dieting has been linked to serious health problems such as coronary artery disease.
3. Model behavior that you want your child to adopt. Teens who perceive that parents “never diet” are much less likely to engage in unhealthy weight control measures than teens who perceive that their parents “diet a lot.”
4. Poke holes in media messages to allow your child to recognize diet culture and the impossible standards displayed in the media. Discuss advertising “tricks” like Photoshop and social media algorithms.
5. Prepare pre-teens for adolescent transitions. During early adolescence, we can expect a weight gain of about 10 pounds per year, and in girls, body fat typically goes from 16 to 27 percent. Often pre-teens will get extra adiposity around their middle before they start their growth spurt. This is all normal. Because teasing and critical commentary have a wellestablished impact on body image and disordered eating, you can teach responses to teasing about normal pubertal development.
6. Seek help early if you see warning signs. Go to a trusted health care professional if you see worrisome signs such as frequent meal skipping, weight loss, disappearance of food, or vomiting after meals. Research tells us that early intervention predicts greater recovery success.

ADVANCED BIOCELLULAR THERAPIES
The Stem Cell Institute of Los Angeles
By Hayley Mattson
The Stem Cell Institute of Los Angeles, affectionately known as Dr. Stem Cell, stands as a beacon of innovation and compassionate care under the expert guidance of Dr. Bruce Fishman. This esteemed clinic specializes in advanced biocellular therapies designed to alleviate pain and restore function for patients throughout Greater Los Angeles.
Dr. Fishman and his team focus on evidence-based procedures to address a wide range of musculoskeletal issues. Whether patients are suffering from discomfort in the back, neck, hips, knees, shoulders, elbows, wrists, or feet, the clinic offers personalized treatment protocols to meet their unique needs. Their holistic approach integrates cutting-edge techniques such as peptides, IV infusion therapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, low-level light laser therapy, and Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) treatment to enhance healing and optimize cellular function.
One of the clinic’s notable offerings is DISCSEEL, a minimally invasive procedure aimed at treating chronic lower back pain caused by damaged intervertebral discs. This technique involves the injection of a specialized fibrin sealant into the disc to seal tears and stimulate natural healing processes. Unlike traditional surgeries, DISCSEEL is performed on an outpatient basis, allowing patients to return home the same day with a significantly shorter recovery period. The procedure aims to preserve the natural structure of the disc, reducing the need for more invasive interventions like disc removal or replacement. Benefits of DISCSEEL include less tissue damage, reduced pain, faster recovery, and a lower risk of complications, with many patients experiencing substantial pain relief and improved function within weeks.
At The Stem Cell Institute, stem cells are considered the architects of the body’s repair system. These versatile cells possess the remarkable ability to transform into various specialized cell types, such as muscle, bone, nerve, or skin cells, based on the body’s needs. This adaptability allows them to play a crucial role in healing and restoring damaged tissues, making them a cornerstone of regenerative medicine. By leveraging this regenerative potential, Dr. Fishman and his team offer promising treatments for a wide range of conditions, from degenerative diseases to traumatic injuries.
The journey into cellular therapy at Dr. Stem Cell begins with a comprehensive initial consultation with Dr. Bruce Fishman. During this crucial meeting, Dr. Fishman conducts a thorough examination, including X-rays and potentially additional imaging such as MRI or CT scans, to accurately diagnose the source of the patient’s pain. This detailed evaluation determines whether the patient is a suitable candidate for cellular therapy.
Dr. Bruce Fishman, MD, MPH, FICS, brings over 25 years of orthopedic expertise to The Stem Cell Institute. A graduate of Wayne State University School of Medicine with a Master of Public Health from the Medical College of Wisconsin, Dr. Fishman completed his orthopedic surgical training at Henry Ford Hospital Medical Center. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Clinical Orthopedic Surgery and Preventive Medicine, a fellow of the International College of Surgeons, and an active member of various medical societies. His extensive experience and recognition in the field underscore his commitment to advancing patient care and innovative treatments at Dr. Stem Cell in Encino.

Embrace Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Prioritize Self-Exams, Regular Check-Ups, and Healthy Living
By Hayley Mattson
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a special time to shine a light on breast cancer and the importance of early detection. It's a chance for everyone—individuals, communities, and organizations—to come together in support of those affected by this disease, and to spread the word about preventive care and early diagnosis.
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women around the world. Catching it early can make a big difference in treatment and recovery. One simple yet powerful way to detect breast cancer early is through regular self-exams. By checking
your breasts each month, you can become more aware of how they feel and spot any changes or unusual signs, like lumps or changes in size or shape. While self-exams are not a replacement for professional screenings, they are a helpful tool for noticing potential issues early on.
Regular check-ups with your healthcare provider are also crucial. Doctors can perform clinical breast exams and recommend mammograms—X-ray images of the breast that can detect any unusual changes before they become obvious. For women over 40, mammograms are usually suggested every year or two, though this can vary depending on individual health and risk factors.
Living a healthy lifestyle can also play a role
in reducing breast cancer risk. Incorporating regular exercise, eating a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables, and limiting alcohol intake can support overall health and potentially lower the risk of developing breast cancer.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is also a great time to support research and advocacy efforts. Whether participating in fundraising events, donating to research organizations, or simply sharing information on social media, every bit of effort helps in the fight against breast cancer.
By staying proactive with self-exams, keeping up with regular medical appointments, and leading a healthy lifestyle, we can all take meaningful steps towards early detection and overall breast health.
MALIBU
Malibu’s Premier Race Debuts with Excitement and Community Impact
By Judy Abel
Anticipation is building for Malibu’s sole foot race of the year. Always a sellout, this year’s Malibu Half Marathon, Malibu Moves, promises more excitement than ever. The twoday event on October 26 and 27 includes a 5K, Kids Run, and a scenic Half Marathon featuring spectacular ocean views along its 13.1-mile course.
International Protective Service, Inc. (IPS) is the title sponsor for the 5K, Half Marathon, and Kids Run. Led by CEO Aaron T. Jones, IPS is a prominent security and investigations firm known for its commitment to safety and protection. This partnership will significantly enhance safety measures and community engagement initiatives at the Malibu Moves events. With additional support from Pepperdine Graziadio Business School, Rusnak BMW, Santa Monica College, The Malibu Times, and 13 Stars Media, this title sponsorship marks a significant milestone for Malibu Moves as it continues to expand and positively impact the community.
MOVES
The running event of the season starts at Zuma Beach with an out and back course. All finishers, whether walkers or runners, will be celebrated with a post-race beach bash like no other with a backdrop of Zuma’s crashing waves and picturesque sands. Founder and Race Director Erica Segel promises a fun and inspiring time for all ages. Her decade of experience as the previous event’s race director and manager proves she knows how to throw unrivaled post-race parties. This year’s race is capped at 3,000 ensuring a “premium and elevated” experience, Segel says. Another sellout is anticipated.
IPS/Malibu Moves’ exclusive charity partner is the Malibu Education Foundation, a community-driven fundraising organization dedicated to enhancing educational opportunities and enabling a vibrant academic experience for students in Malibu public schools. “We believe in their mission and supporting athletic programs from K1 throughout high school. We feel a strong alignment in the purpose that MEF has for the community and the message we promote to have an active lifestyle and have fun,” says Segel.
Adding to the festive race is the organizers’ messaging that “we’re a very inclusive event from youth to the senior population.” Segel, a seasoned runner, knows, “It can be intimidating to run a race even for those with confidence. What if I’m not going to be fast enough? My passion is for the people who cross last. Those are the people who have probably overcome the most self-doubt and put in a tremendous amount of effort. They’re the ones who need to be supported the most.” Segel adds, “All ages, fitness levels, and body sizes are welcome. I want to reverse engineer the experience from the last crossing the finish line to the first. Their stories can change you forever. The journey some participants have embarked on is so much bigger than just the race. Celebrating elite runners is expected, but what if we put the focus on personal growth and the experience?”
IPS/Malibu Moves races allow enough time for walkers and runners of all fitness levels who can count on support throughout the course. All finishers will be met with medals, food, music and of course celebration. Expect a beer garden and even massages.
“This is the only walking and running event taking place in our beautiful Malibu,” Segel notes. “Participants will be able to walk or run along the Pacific coastline. It’ll be a beautiful celebration of our community in a perfect beach setting.”
On October 26 the event’s Movement Expo features vendors, a kids’ run, beachside movement classes, and bib pick up. The 5K and Half Marathon takes place on the 27 with everyone gathering at the Finish Line Festival.
Those who raise $500 or more for charity partner MEF can gain access to a VIP lounge with curated food, deluxe restrooms and recovery lounges all while supporting a great cause.
It’s more than just a race. It’s was a celebration of health, community, and the stunning natural landscape of Malibu.
The IPS/Malibu Moves running events will leave you soaring with breathtaking scenery and its supportive atmosphere. This is an event for everyone, no matter age or fitness level. “This is an opportunity to be a community and celebrate together with a healthy message while also supporting the Malibu Education Foundation which directly benefits back to our community. This event is about showcasing the best of Malibu which is community, support, and giving back,” says Segel.
This running and movement celebration is a standout event on the running calendar. Celebrating community will leave lasting memories for all who take part.

3rd Annual Sagebrush Cantina
Music, Food & Fun! Festival
By Hayley Mattson
The 3rd Annual Sagebrush Cantina Music, Food & Fun! The Festival is set to return to Old Town Calabasas, promising an unforgettable experience for music lovers and food enthusiasts alike.
We had the pleasure of sitting down with Robert Olshever, the visionary founder behind this beloved event, to learn more about the inspiration, evolution, and future of the festival.
What inspired you to start the Sagebrush Cantina Music, Food & Fun! Festival?
My journey in the music world began right here in Woodlands, where I started promoting concerts as a teenager in high school. Over the years, my career in music has taken me around the globe, working with and creating promotions for some of the biggest bands on their international tours. The idea of bringing an elevated music experience back to my roots, specifically to the Sagebrush Cantina in Old Town Calabasas, felt like completing a full circle. This festival is my way of bringing the world-class music experiences I’ve been part of back home.
How has the festival evolved since its inception?
The festival concept came to me in 2017 during a hike up Ahmanson Ranch. I
stumbled upon a Dior Fashion Show in its preproduction stage, and it struck me— if Dior could bring their show all the way from Paris to my backyard, why couldn’t I create a music festival right here? At the time, I was living in Hidden Hills, and this realization sparked the birth of the Sagebrush Cantina Music, Food & Fun! Festival.
What makes this festival unique compared to other music festivals in the area?
The Sagebrush Cantina Festival stands out due to the level of musical talent and the overall elevated experience we offer. It’s not just about bringing in big names; it’s about creating an intimate, high-quality event that resonates with the local community.
Can you tell us more about the lineup of artists performing this year?
This year’s lineup is truly our best yet. We have the Gin Blossoms, who are multiplatinum selling and Grammynominated artists. Their music shaped rock radio and MTV in the ’90s and beyond. Fastball, another multiplatinumselling and Grammy-nominated band, will also be gracing our stage. We’re thrilled to have Alisan Porter, the season 10 winner of NBC’s The Voice, who is not only a fantastic singer but also a
talented songwriter and actress. And we’re welcoming back Chris Stills, who performed at our 2018 festival. Chris is an amazing singer-songwriter who has collaborated with legends like his father Stephen Stills, Neil Young, David Crosby, and many more.

I hope they leave with the feeling that they’ve experienced a world-class music event right in their own backyard. That’s the essence of what we’re trying to create—a high-caliber, memorable experience that’s rooted in the local community.

A SEASON of Transformation
By Madeline Wright
Fall in California wine country is one of the most enchanting times of the year, when the landscape undergoes a dramatic transformation. The once lush, green vineyards of summer are set ablaze with vibrant hues of orange, yellow, and red. As the air cools and the days shorten, the region comes alive, bustling with activity in vineyards, wineries, and restaurants. This is the culmination of a year’s worth of hard work, where the grapes are finally harvested, and the winemaking process truly begins.
Harvest time, which typically spans from late August through early November, is the most critical period in the winemaking calendar. Vineyard crews work tirelessly, often from dawn until dusk, meticulously picking the grapes at their peak ripeness. The harvest is a delicate dance, combining science, art, and intuition. The decision of when to pick the grapes is not taken lightly, as it is pivotal in determining the character of the wine. Winemakers consider the style they aim to achieve, the specific grape variety, and a host of other factors that influence how the grapes will evolve into the finished wine.
Harvest in California Wine Country
In the vineyards, the atmosphere is electric as the fruits of the vine are carefully gathered. The excitement then shifts to the crush pads, where the grapes are processed. As the grapes are sorted, crushed, and pressed, the scents of fresh juice and fermenting wine fill the air, a sensory signal that the winemaking journey is well underway. White wines are generally pressed immediately before fermentation begins, while red varieties spend some time fermenting on their skins. This step is essential for developing the color, tannins, and depth of flavor that are characteristic of red wines.
As the primary fermentation progresses, yeast converts the sugars in the grape juice into alcohol and carbon dioxide. This phase is both a precise science and a magical transformation, as the raw fruit is alchemized into the beginnings of wine. Once the initial fermentation is complete, the wine is transferred into vessels that will shape its final character. Traditional oak barrels are favored for their ability to impart subtle flavors and textures, but modern winemakers also employ stainless steel, concrete, and even amphorae to achieve different effects.
Throughout the fall, secondary fermentations continue, particularly for wines undergoing malolactic fermentation, a process that softens the acidity and adds complexity. As the season winds down, the wines are carefully monitored and topped off in their barrels, where they will rest and mature through the winter months, ready to be unveiled in the months or years to come.

with 5 Hearty Autumn Soups Embrace the Season
By Elizabeth Hickcox
As autumn's crisp air settles in, few things are as comforting as a warm bowl of soup. Among the season's best offerings are a variety of hearty soups that not only warm the body but also celebrate the harvest's bounty.
Tomato soup is a classic, bringing the last of summer's ripened tomatoes into a comforting, rich bowl that's perfect for pairing with a grilled cheese sandwich. Roasting the tomatoes beforehand deepens the flavor, adding a smoky sweetness that complements the tangy base.
Butternut squash soup is another fall favorite. Its velvety texture and naturally sweet, nutty flavor make it a seasonal staple. Add a touch of sage or thyme for a fragrant aroma that fills the kitchen with the essence of autumn.
Corn chowder is perfect for early autumn when the last of the sweet corn is still available. This creamy, hearty soup is a celebration of the season's end, with its rich base of cream or coconut milk, punctuated by the sweetness of the corn.
Mushroom soup brings earthiness to the table, with its deep, savory flavors. Combining a mix of wild mushrooms can elevate the soup, adding layers of complexity that are perfectly suited for a cozy night in.
Finally, Green pea soup offers a lighter option that still feels hearty enough for the cooler weather. Its bright, fresh flavor is balanced by a touch of mint or lemon, making it a refreshing yet warming dish.
These autumn soups are perfect for savoring the season's flavors while keeping the chill at bay.

Discover the Magic of Zion National Park
Experience the vibrant colors and perfect autumn weather
ABy Elizabeth Hickcox
s the summer crowds thin out and the crisp autumn air begins to settle in, Zion National Park transforms into a serene and breathtaking haven for nature lovers. Located in southwestern Utah, Zion’s unique landscape, with its towering sandstone cliffs, lush valleys, and vibrant riverbanks, offers an unforgettable experience year-round, but there’s something particularly magical about visiting in the fall.
Autumn at Zion brings a spectacular display of color, with the park’s cottonwoods, maples, and oaks bursting into vivid shades of gold, red, and orange. The juxtaposition of these fiery hues against the backdrop of Zion’s iconic red rock formations creates a visual feast that’s nothing short of awe-inspiring. The Virgin River, winding through the canyon, reflects these colors, adding to the park’s enchanting atmosphere.
Fall’s cooler temperatures, typically ranging from the 50s to 70s during the day, make it an ideal time for hiking and exploring. Popular trails like Angels Landing and The Narrows,
which can be challenging in the summer heat, become more enjoyable in the mild autumn weather. For those looking for a less strenuous experience, the Riverside Walk offers stunning views without the need for intense exertion.
With fewer visitors in the park, autumn is also a great time for wildlife watching. Mule deer, wild turkeys, and bighorn sheep are more active, often spotted grazing in the meadows or traversing the rocky terrain. Birdwatchers will delight in the variety of species that can be seen, from peregrine falcons to golden eagles soaring majestically above the canyon.
Calabasas style
One of the most appealing aspects of visiting Zion in the fall is the tranquility. The summer rush is over, leaving the park quieter and more peaceful. This is the perfect time to find a secluded spot, perhaps along the Virgin River or in one of the park’s many side canyons, and simply take in the beauty and serenity of your surroundings.
Whether you are a seasoned hiker, a nature photographer, or simply someone looking to unwind in one of the most stunning natural settings in the world, Zion National Park in autumn offers an experience that’s both invigorating and restorative. So pack your bags, lace up your hiking boots, and get ready to explore this autumnal wonderland.
