Working on this issue has truly been a labor of love, reflection, and healing. As we move into a new phase of recovery following the Palisades Fire, we approached this edition of Calabasas Style with a deep sense of purpose. You’ll notice right away that we stepped away from our traditional cover format to dedicate this issue to the true heroes—those who run toward the flames as we seek safety. Their courage and selflessness deserved to be front and center, and we are honored to pay tribute to them.
Along with our heartfelt cover, you’ll also see a refreshed and modern Masthead, a symbol of new beginnings as we move forward into a brighter future. Our coverage of the Palisades Fire was deeply personal. From the first Tuesday when the flames broke out in the Palisades, through the relentless, month-long battle until the last ember was finally extinguished, our team was on the ground, witnessing the devastation, resilience, and incredible human spirit. Mornings at Zuma Beach, where hundreds of fire personnel gathered in unwavering commitment, will be memories forever etched in our hearts.
Today, signs of renewal are visible—green life emerging from the scorched hillsides, a quiet reminder that nature, like us, heals with time. Communities across Calabasas, Westlake, Thousand Oaks, Agoura Hills, and beyond rallied together, reminding us all why we call this place home. In the face of so much loss—the heartbreaking sight of burned homes and beloved landmarks—the overwhelming outpouring of support restored hope. To the firefighters, volunteers, emergency personnel, and sheriffs, we cannot thank you enough for your bravery, sacrifice, and strength.
In addition to honoring our heroes, we take time in this issue to spotlight some of the most distinguished men in our community. These exceptional individuals are more than leaders in their fields; they are visionaries, changemakers, and role models for the next generation. Their journeys— marked by resilience, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to giving back—inspire all of us to strive for a better tomorrow. Speaking of extraordinary individuals, we are thrilled to introduce you to the dynamic Fireball Tim Lawrence. Known for his infectious energy, creative spirit, and love of car culture, Fireball brings a fresh perspective to Calabasas Style. Look forward to his new feature, Best of Show, starting with this issue and continuing forward!
As we turn toward sunnier days, we are excited to bring you our annual Parents’ Guide to Summer Fun, filled with activities for kids and families to enjoy. In our Local Flavor section, we continue our tradition of celebrating the best local restaurants and are excited to introduce a new addition by spotlighting a few of our exceptional local chefs — a feature we will continue in future issues.
As mentioned previously, the Palisades Fire has deeply impacted our team. As we continue to heal and grow, we have adjusted our publishing schedule, with a special June issue out next, followed by our July/August edition. We are thrilled to announce that we will return to our beloved tradition of featuring a local family on the cover this June—a symbol of community, hope, and togetherness. We are deeply grateful to everyone who reached out with kind words, encouragement, and love for our Calabasas Style team. A heartfelt thank you to our loyal and patient advertisers for their unwavering support. Together, we will continue to celebrate the beauty, strength, and resilience of our community through the pages of Calabasas Style.

The Calabasas Chamber of Commerce kicked off the new year with its annual Installation Gala & Casino Night, bringing together local business leaders, city officials, and community members for an evening of celebration and recognition. Held in January, the event marked the official installation of the 2025 Board of Directors and honored individuals and organizations making a significant impact in the community. Leading the newly appointed board is Chairman of the Board Mike McNutt (Las Virgenes Municipal Water District), alongside Immediate Past Chairman Mark Levinson, First Vice Chairman Dr. Iris Stone (Hear Clear Hearing Aids, Inc.), Business Development Vice Chairman Raychel Harrison (Salon Nuuvo), Corporate Secretary Lisa Clayden (Calabasas Chamber of Commerce), and Director of Finance Cristina Borhani (Skin Bio). The Board of Directors also includes Michael Bloom (The Agency), Nathaniel Getzels (Getzels Group, Compass Real Estate), Robbie Gluckson (UCLA Health), Lois Julien (City of Calabasas Senior Center), Monica Parmar (DryBar), Raychel Harrison (Salon Nuuvo), Mike Pashai (All View Realty), Ali Payani (Payani Media), Maria Primushko (MVP Law Group), Kathleen Sterling (Valley News Group), Jake Demirchyan (The Commons at Calabasas ~ Caruso Affiliated), Rachel Tabak (Keller Williams Calabasas), Rita El Hage (Poppy Bank), and Nick Wolf (Forefront Wealth Partners). Together, these individuals will guide the Chamber’s efforts in fostering economic development and business growth in Calabasas.
The evening also recognized outstanding contributions to the community. Calabasas Country Club and Viewpoint School each received the Milestone Award, celebrating 40 years of service. Dr. Iris Stone was honored with the Chairman’s Award for her dedication and leadership, while Avneet Kaur and Puja Sohi were named Volunteers of the Year for their commitment to Chamber initiatives. The Spirit of Calabasas Award was presented to Rick Bilgrien, recognizing his invaluable contributions to the city.

Acommunity during one of the region’s most devastating recent events—the Palisades wildfire. Hosted in collaboration by the Las Virgenes Water District and the Cities of Agoura Hills and Calabasas, the luncheon was a powerful tribute to female leaders who are shaping, protecting, and uplifting their communities. Among those honored were LACoFD Fire Captain Sheila KelliherBerkoh and Community Services Liaison (CSL) Megan Currier.
Both women were commended for their outstanding service, courage, and commitment while serving during the January 2025 wildfire that ravaged parts of Malibu and Pacific Palisades. Captain Kelliher-Berkoh, a seasoned Public Information Officer, and CSL Currier played critical roles in communication, coordination, and public safety outreach during the emergency. Their ability to remain calm under pressure and work tirelessly to keep the public informed and safe highlighted the importance of strong, compassionate leadership in times of crisis. Also recognized was Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sergeant Sanchez,

In honor of Women’s History Month, Los Angeles County Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath brought together a remarkable group of women whose grit and heart have kept Malibu and Pacific Palisades thriving, even in the wake of wildfire devastation. These small business owners were recognized for their critical role in strengthening the local economy, and for their unshakable perseverance in the face of adversity.
Among them was Dr. Ciresa Clouse, DDS, of The Palisades Dentists, who lost both her home and her dental practice in the Palisades Fire. Despite the profound loss, Dr. Clouse continues to serve her patients with compassion and care, operating from a temporary location in Westwood. “I always say it is a privilege to serve,” she shared. “It has been such a tremendous time, but we are uplifted and encouraged by each other.”
Helene Henderson, the force behind Malibu Farm and Malibu Farm Café on the iconic Malibu Pier, also endured significant challenges. The Franklin and Palisades fires, mudslides, and gas line disruptions led to multiple closures of her beloved restaurants. Without gas, there was no way to operate. But Helene and her team pushed forward, and today, her farmto-table fare continues to nourish the community while offering stunning views of First Point. “Having locals come in and support us means everything,” Helene said. “We’re committed to giving back however we can.”
As the pier’s infrastructure slowly recovered, Lynn Bealer, owner of MaliBUngalows, was tackling another disaster— mud. Located in the charming old Cosentino’s nursery, her flower shop became a muddy mess after recent storms.
“The International Women’s Day recognition from Supervisor Horvath was a nice change after shoveling mud out of the bungalows for the last 10 days!” she joked. Bealer’s heartcentered business is more than a flower shop; it’s a beacon of light. “Lynn is one of the kindest, most compassionate, and overwhelmingly generous people I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with,” said friend and supporter Diane Sorrentino-Weiss.
Supervisor Horvath also recognized Stacey Harper and Gina Longo, partners at Malibu Premier Homes. Harper lost her home in the 2007 wildfires, and Longo’s family lost theirs in the Palisades Fire. Despite personal devastation, the duo remains committed to helping others find and rebuild their homes in Malibu. “As women business owners, we embrace the roles of leaders, supporters, and connectors,” Longo said. “Representation is powerful… and we stand united by a shared understanding and a deep commitment to our community’s recovery and resilience.”
These honorees remind us that even in times of hardship, community, courage, and connection prevail. Through loss, they continue to lift each other—and all of Malibu—back to solid ground.

Gua Sha, an ancient Chinese skincare technique, has taken the beauty world by storm—and for good reason. This timehonored practice involves using a smoothedged tool, typically made from natural stone, to gently scrape the skin in upward strokes. While its origins date back centuries, its resurgence in modern beauty circles is a testament to its remarkable benefits. Gua Sha is lauded for enhancing circulation, reducing puffiness, sculpting the face, and promoting a naturally radiant glow. Among the many materials used for Gua Sha tools, quartz stone, especially rose quartz, stands out as a favorite, revered not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for its cooling properties and energetic healing benefits.
Quartz has long been considered a powerful healing crystal. Rose quartz, in particular, is closely associated with self-love, emotional balance, and healing—qualities that align beautifully with the practice of skincare as a form of self-care. In physical terms, quartz offers a naturally smooth, cool surface that glides effortlessly across the skin. This cooling sensation is soothing and particularly beneficial for calming inflammation, making it ideal for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin.
Additionally, quartz retains temperature well, which is why many beauty enthusiasts store their Gua Sha tools in the fridge. This added coolness not only enhances the sensory experience but also helps to tighten pores, reduce puffiness, and invigorate the skin—especially in the morning.
BOOSTS CIRCULATION & LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE
Gua Sha stimulates microcirculation in the skin, encouraging fresh oxygen and nutrients to reach skin cells. This not only improves overall skin tone but also supports lymphatic drainage—a crucial process that helps the body flush out toxins. The result is visibly depuffed skin with a more sculpted and toned appearance.
By promoting collagen production and releasing muscle
tension, regular use of Gua Sha can help smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Over time, it supports firmer, more youthful-looking skin, especially in areas like the forehead, around the eyes, and along the smile lines.
Incorporating Gua Sha into your skincare routine after applying serums or facial oils can significantly boost product absorption. The massaging action helps press active ingredients deeper into the skin, allowing your favorite skincare products to work more effectively.
More than just a beauty tool, the Gua Sha stone offers a therapeutic experience. It helps relieve tension in key areas such as the jawline, forehead, and temples—places where many people unknowingly carry stress. This makes Gua Sha not only a skincare ritual but also a moment of mindfulness and relaxation in your daily routine.
Always begin with a freshly washed face. Apply a few drops of facial oil or serum to create a slick surface that allows the stone to glide smoothly without tugging.
Hold the stone at about a 15-degree angle to your skin and gently stroke upward and outward. Follow the natural contours of your face, starting at the neck and working your way up toward the forehead.
Pay extra attention to areas where tension accumulates, such as under the cheekbones, along the jawline, and on the brow bone. Use light to medium pressure—never enough to cause discomfort or redness.
For best results, use your quartz Gua Sha tool three to five times per week. Consistency is key to seeing longterm benefits.
Flowing skirts, designer hats and pastel florals are essential staples for a spring wardrobe.
Calabasas Style keeps your wardrobe blossoming with fresh and stylish apparel.
The morning of the Palisades Fire started like any other. I had my usual view of the mountainside from my condo at Edgewater Towers — perched on Sunset Boulevard and PCH, just behind Vons. I call it my “Positano view,” a little slice of Palisades million-dollar mansions and winding roads, even if the ocean stays mostly out of sight. It was 10:30 a.m., and I was on the phone with my grandma when the alert came in: “A small fire .03 miles away”.
I laughed. Palisades has two fire stations — this would be over in no time.
Then, the smoke came.
At first, just a wisp in the distance, but within moments, it plummeted toward my window. The chaos outside escalated at an impossible speed — fire trucks multiplied by the dozens, sirens overlapping, the deep roar of planes overhead. From my window, I started filming. I caught it all — the first thin trails of smoke, then, in minutes, new fires erupting, leaping across the hills. I watched flames lick at homes, swallowing them whole in explosions of heat and light.
Sunset Boulevard became a bottleneck of desperation. Traffic stood frozen, cars bumper to bumper, their drivers frantic to escape toward PCH. Pedestrians ran — parents clutching their children, people dragging luggage, some sprinting, some stunned and slow-moving, all caught in the same nightmare. I was still in disbelief. How bad could it be?
I stepped onto the pool deck of my building, where a few neighbors stood, watching. That deck is gone now — burned to nothing — but at that moment, I stood
By Ania Migdal
there, recording as two massive fire planes soared low overhead. When a bulldozer trundled up the hill, I laughed again — “A bulldozer? What’s that going to do against a fire?” The shock of it all made me cling to the absurd, unwilling to believe the fire had the upper hand.
Even as my mom yelled at me over the phone — “Leave! Now!” — I lingered, convinced this would all blow over. It wasn’t until 1 p.m. that I finally evacuated. I packed instinctively: my passport, my essentials, but also my latest collection of sweatshirts — the ones I had planned to hand-paint as part of my House of Malibu line. I didn’t know why, but I needed to take them. Maybe I thought I’d only be gone for a few hours. Maybe I just needed to hold onto something that felt like my future.
I headed to my grandma’s house in Hancock Park, where my mom soon arrived, having evacuated from Malibu herself. The house filled up quickly — my stepdad, my tiny Yorkie, their two dogs, my aunt’s three kids, all of us displaced, watching the news like it was a countdown to our worst fears. I was glued to the updates, tracking the flames approaching my home. When the maps showed my building marked in red — damaged, burned — I shrieked. My home. Gone.
But then, conflicting reports. A friend of my aunt’s, an LAPD officer, went to check: “The buildings are still standing. The fire burned around them, but they’re there.” The back-and-forth, the uncertainty — it stretched into hours, days. We weren’t allowed back into the Palisades for a week. And even after access was granted, even as my neighbors in hazmat suits sifted through ravines, searching for what was left, I couldn’t do it. I knew my condo was still standing, but I couldn’t bring myself to return — to drive through the place I had called home and face the truth of what had happened to my city, my community. I stayed away, avoiding what I
knew I’d eventually have to see.
And then, I finally went and saw it all.
And in the midst of all this — the shock, the grief, the waiting — I turned to the one thing I could control: creating.
I found a quiet corner at my grandma’s house and transformed her vintage little girl’s rolling school desk into my makeshift studio. It became my refuge, a tiny space where I could process the chaos through brushstrokes and color. When I moved into my parents’ home, I took over their dining table, turning it into my new creative space. What had started as a small collection of hand-painted sweatshirts now carried the weight of my emotions: grief, resilience, hope. Each piece became a reflection of this journey, a tangible reminder of what I had been through.
Exposing this collection to the world hasn’t been easy. Every design holds a part of me, a moment from these past few months — some painful, some powerful. But through it all, I feel like maybe, just maybe, this can help others, too. The Palisades Fire isn’t something that can ever be forgotten. It’s a memory that will always be there, woven into the fabric of our lives.
But what I’ve learned is that the fight isn’t just about remembering — it’s about getting through. It’s about finding patience in the waiting, strength in the rebuilding, and faith in the unknown. Somehow, through all of this, I have to believe that God has a bigger plan for all of us. When searching for the silver lining, I found silver paint. Creating turned into my coping mechanism.
And so if nothing else, I know this: I am not what burned. I am what rose from my burning desire to create and to create is what rose as a coping mechanism for me to survive it all. Palisades 01.07.2025

Howdy folks… and welcome to Car Culture in Southern California. My name is Fireball (Yes, it’s real and I’m named after my Uncle’s Racing Plane) and this is my brand-new Column here in Calabasas Style. Big thanks to editor Hayley for reaching out to me and wanting to partner up on some fantastic new content just for you guys.
This new column is called BEST OF SHOW and will cover unique people in the Southern California Car Culture scene, just like my show online. Artisans, Builders, Designers, and Collector folks that continue to make our love of cars strong here in the City of Angels. A City not even fires can take down.
First up is Ornamental Artist Joe Magliato who’s recently built an amazing Hot Rod (in his mess of a shop) out of Copper, Brass, and Steel…and just about anything else that was lying around. Let’s get into it…
Q. What is BIG IRON and how long have you been in Business creating Ornamental Iron?
Joe: Big Iron is the name of my ornamental iron business. I mostly work on architectural projects for homes and industrial buildings. We offer hand-forged blacksmithing and work with steel, stainless steel, copper, brass, bronze, and aluminum. Ranging from staircases to door pulls. If you can draw it on a
napkin, we can usually figure out a way to make it a reality.
But Joe’s creative imagination isn’t limited to his clients and this latest build is off the cuff of an original Hot Rod called THE MAD HAMMER which sold for $100K.
Q: What was the inspiration for creating Hot Rods (as opposed to any other kind of build) using the techniques and implementations of your business?
Joe: It actually started from building a custom chopper on a TV show (when choppers were a big deal). My kids and wife were nervous riding on the back of it so I started my first “car version of my bike” and it snowballed from there. So, as you can see… my “version” of a car is peered through a pair of blacksmith and coppersmith goggles.
This all-new Hot Rod is called TRINITY due to its tryptic seating style. From thirty feet, it screams custom texture subtleties that draw the viewer in out of sheer curiosity. “What the hell is this thing?
Q: Do you experience the same sense of satisfaction in building a Hot Rod as you do from creating custom pieces for clients?
Joe: Absolutely. But the difference is that I get to build what I see in my head. Very seldom do you get free rein on a customer’s project. But when I do, it’s usually a game changer.
Q: Your daughter works with you from time to time. Tell us what it's like to have her follow in your footsteps.
Joe: It’s the best. She is an amazing artist. I could never draw people like she can. She truly has “it,” and now that she’s learning all the metal tricks I can come up with, I’m super excited to see where she winds up in the fabrication world.
The creative process involved in building custom cars (like
hot rods or restorations) can have significant positive psychological effects, particularly in the realm of Joe’s metalwork. Engaging in metal fabrication allows individuals to tap into their problem-solving abilities and creativity, providing a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction as they shape raw materials into something functional and beautiful. It’s the same experience I have when I design cars for movies. Hands-on work fosters mindfulness as it requires focus, attention to detail and a deep sense of patience. This allows builders to fully immerse themselves in the task at hand and temporarily escape serious stressors from daily life.
The act of crafting intricate metal parts, however, whether it’s bending, welding, or shaping, can also serve as a therapeutic outlet for stress and anxiety. The repetitive nature of tasks like sanding or polishing can be meditative, promoting relaxation and even mental clarity. Completing a project like restoring a classic car or building a Hot Rod gives a sense of achievement, boosting self-esteem and enhancing overall well-being. But you don’t have to be a builder. Even the creative process of making a Salad will do it! In other words…it’s cool.
Q: If you were teaching a class on building the Hot Rod with kids, explain to us a bit about what we would experience with you on this project.
Joe: My approach is a little different than most. I get the vision in my head and then start “bending metal” till it’s what I see. I can usually build things faster than I can sitting and drawing. I hate paperwork. So, my focus with kids would majorly be on industrial arts and math… and minor on everything else. Is there a word for something less than “minor?” Ha!
Q: Tell us a bit of your spiritual or psychological approach to the creative process of building for a client. What's important to you within a project?
Joe: I believe God gave me what talent I have to figure things out and build things. And not to use that talent would be wrong. An old Blacksmith that taught me years ago, Monte Haberman, said “my job isn’t to make this or that, my job is to take the customers' money with a smile on their face.”
And that’s what Joe does. Concept to Completion is a Circle of Life process. Giving and Receiving. On January 7, what began as a flicker on a crisp Tuesday morning in the Pacific Palisades turned into one of the most catastrophic wildfires in Los Angeles County’s history. By Wednesday evening, more than 15,000 acres were consumed, thousands of lives were upended, and a once-idyllic coastal region had become a battleground against nature’s fury.
Clocked at a staggering 86 miles per hour on Malibu’s mountaintops, the Santa Ana winds turned the Palisades Fire into an uncontrollable inferno. Fueled by bone-dry terrain and a rare meteorological phenomenon called a “low-level jet,” the fire defied all containment efforts. Winds hurled embers like missiles across communities, igniting homes and businesses with terrifying speed. Entire neighborhoods—Topanga, Carbon Beach, La Costa, Big Rock—were swallowed in minutes.
By the time the sun set on January 8, over 60,000 residents had been evacuated. More than 13,000 structures were at risk, and familiar landmarks—Palisades High School, The Reel Inn, Rosenthal Wines—had been reduced to rubble. The Pacific Coast Highway, a lifeline for the Malibu coast, suffered extensive damage. Alternate escape routes were gridlocked or impassable. The fire line shifted unpredictably, leaving residents and responders racing against an enemy with no map.
“IT’S UNLIKE ANYTHING WE’VE EVER SEEN,”
Malibu’s Mayor Doug Stewart said solemnly. “The last 24 hours have really reset the future for Malibu.”
The Palisades Fire wasn’t an isolated disaster. Simultaneously, the Eaton Fire in Altadena devoured 14,000 acres and claimed 17 lives. In Sylmar, Pasadena, and the Hollywood Hills, other blazes erupted. With emergency resources stretched to their limit, it felt less like a fire season and more like a statewide crisis.
Water shortages plagued firefighting efforts in the hills and remote zones. Generators failed, fuel ran dry, and Southern California Gas cut service in high-risk areas. Traffic lights darkened. Cell service collapsed. Firefighters—many working 36- to 48-hour shifts—dug in with whatever tools they had, often defending homes while their own families were under evacuation orders.
More than 5,000 emergency personnel mobilized within 72 hours: firefighters, paramedics, police, National Guard units, and a silent army of volunteers. Helicopters darted through smoke, tankers dropped retardant, and dozers carved out firebreaks as ground crews stood between flames and families.

“They put everything on the line to protect strangers. That kind of bravery deserves our deepest admiration.”
“These men and women were the last line of defense,” said one Incident Commander stationed at Zuma Beach, which had transformed into a bustling command post. “They put everything on the line to protect strangers. That kind of bravery deserves our deepest admiration.”
Some responders fought to save homes while knowing their own had already burned. Others sustained injuries—like a 25-year-old firefighter with a serious head injury—and kept working. Volunteers cooked meals, opened shelters, and evacuated pets and livestock. Local churches became sanctuaries.
“Every blanket, every bottle of water, every moment someone said, ‘You’re not alone’—it all mattered,” said Kasey Earnest, CEO of the Malibu Boys & Girls Club. “We saw people’s true colors—and they were beautiful.”
By the weekend, Zuma Beach had morphed from a peaceful retreat into the heart of the firefighting effort. Portable housing, mobile clinics, food trucks, and supply tents lined the shore. The beach became a makeshift city—gritty, functional, and defiant.
Utility crews labored around the clock. Over 300 Southern California Edison technicians worked to restore power. Spectrum reactivated Wi-Fi in thousands of households after a community effort to request restoration. Mobile towers, and charging stations sprang up, reconnecting loved ones and coordinating logistics. A devastated coastline began to hum with hope.
Now, with the fire finally at 100% containment, attention has shifted to recovery—a word that means different things to different people. For some, it means rebuilding homes; for others, it means healing hearts. Town halls like the one scheduled at Malibu High School on January 21 offer a place to ask questions, express frustration, and find solidarity.
But as the dust settles, an ache remains. More than 6,800 structures were destroyed, and 973 more damaged. At least 12 lives were lost. And for many, the trauma is only beginning to surface.
Walking through once-vibrant neighborhoods now reduced to skeletal remains is gut-wrenching. These weren’t just buildings—they were homes, lifetimes, first birthdays, graduation dinners, wedding anniversaries, and quiet Sunday mornings now buried beneath soot and ash. For some families, rebuilding may never happen. For others, it will be years before they can return.
The Palisades Fire, one of the most catastrophic wildfires in California history, claimed 12 lives and destroyed 6,831 structures, leaving deep scars on the communities it ravaged. Among the lives lost were a few individuals whose stories reflect courage, love, and an unyielding connection to the places they called home.
Randy “Craw” Miod, a cherished Malibu artist and surfer, perished inside his beloved home, “The Crab Shack,” clutching his kitten as flames engulfed his studio. Known as the “Malibu man of mystery,” Miod’s vibrant energy and artistic spirit enriched the local culture. Friends and neighbors mourn the loss of a man who embodied the creative soul of Malibu.
Topanga's Arthur Simoneau, 69, a legendary hang-glider and adventurer, died defending his mountaintop home. Returning from a ski trip, he refused to flee, choosing instead to face the fire. “He showed us how to live life to its fullest,” his son Andre shared. Simoneau’s bravery and authenticity left an enduring impression on all who knew him.
Rory Callum Sykes, a former actor with cerebral palsy and partial blindness, died in his Malibu Hills cottage after crews were unable to reach him due to disabled water lines. His mother, Shelley, heartbroken and injured, couldn’t carry him to safety. Rory’s life, marked by resilience and hard-won independence, was cut tragically short.
Betty O’Meara, 94, a lifelong Malibu resident, chose not to evacuate her Big Rock home. Surrounded by a lifetime of memories, she remained until the end. Her story is one of quiet strength, a poignant symbol of the deep roots and emotional ties that so many residents felt to their homes.
At an emotional press conference, Malibu Mayor Doug Stewart spoke for many: “Even when we don’t know someone’s name, their loss is felt by all of us.”
"We’re fighting to preserve a way of life."
Pain deepens as “For Sale” signs begin to pop up on scorched lots. Unable to navigate insurance hurdles, skyrocketing construction costs, and the emotional toll, many are choosing to sell. Developers and investors are circling, and in some cases, lots are selling above asking price. But this fire, like those before it—Woolsey, Topanga, Corral—has taught us something vital: we’re not just fighting to rebuild houses. We’re fighting to preserve a way of life.
At city meetings, emotions run high. Residents speak through tears. They ask when schools will reopen, when insurance claims will be processed, and how to navigate a future that seems suddenly unfamiliar. They fear that Malibu’s soul—the spirit of togetherness, creativity, and reverence for nature—might get paved over in the name of progress.
Beyond the ash and rubble lies another silent casualty: the ocean. The Palisades Fire deposited tons of debris and toxic runoff into nearby waters. Ash and soot clouded the ocean, endangering kelp forests and marine life, including the endangered Southern California steelhead trout. Hazardous materials like asbestos and melted plastics further polluted the water. NOAA and Scripps researchers are studying the long-term effects, but much damage has already been done.
Pacific Coast Highway, a symbol of California’s freedom and beauty, remains fractured. The governor promises a partial reopening by May—one lane in each direction, with a third for construction crews. But for locals, it’s not just about traffic. It’s about restoring access, economy, and identity.
O n the harrowing night of the Palisades Fire, longtime Big Rock resident Patty Phillips nearly lost her life when she became trapped in her car, engulfed by smoke and surrounded by flames. Despite decades of experience with Malibu wildfires, Patty and her husband, James Sarantinos, were caught off guard due to a lack of emergency alerts and misleading updates from the WatchDuty app and media. When the fire overtook Topanga Canyon without warning, they had little time to escape. While trying to flee with her dog Koda, Patty missed a turn, crashed on a dirt road, and became stranded on a cliff’s edge, facing a terrifying firestorm.
As Patty desperately called 911, honked her horn, and prayed for a quick death, James pleaded with firefighters for help. Eventually, LA County Fire Captain Malcolm Dicks agreed to risk his life to rescue her. He found Patty and urged her to “run for your life.” Clutching Koda, she fled through the smoke to Dicks’ truck, escaping just in time. Koda suffered burned paws, but both survived.
Weeks later, Patty reunited with her rescuer at Fire Station 70, tearfully thanking him alongside fire officials and local leaders. She now urges others never to wait for official warnings during a wildfire. “Trust your instincts,” she said. “Leave early.” Forever changed, Patty is grateful for her second chance at life and the hero who made it possible.
The fire brought out the best in people, especially the firefighters who ran into danger when others fled. They came from near and far—Los Angeles, Oregon, Montana, Texas. Salem firefighters helped protect structures; Bay Area strike teams shared lessons learned. These everyday heroes risked their lives to protect others, working tirelessly, sometimes with elevated levels of mercury and lead in their blood due to exposure.
They returned home with smoke in their lungs and trauma in their hearts. They debriefed with their teams, cleaned gear, and braced for the next emergency. Some are still undergoing medical treatment. Others are attending counseling sessions for PTSD.
And yet, they keep showing up.
To the firefighters: thank you is not enough. You gave us more than protection—you gave us hope. You reminded us of the strength in service, the beauty of sacrifice, and the power of love in action. To the volunteers: you were the hands of healing. You proved that in the darkest hour, compassion always finds a way to shine.
To the fallen: we carry your memory in our hearts. You are not forgotten. And to every resident who stayed, who helped, who rebuilt—your resilience is the soul of this community. We will rise from these ashes. And we will rise stronger, more united, and more grateful than ever before. Because here in Calabasas, Malibu, in the Pacific Palisades and across Los Angeles—we know what it means to hold the line for one another.
And we always will.
J yoti “Jo” and Colin Drummond, longtime residents of Big Rock in Malibu, experienced a life-altering ordeal during the Palisades Fire. While on a trip in India, the Drummonds received alarming calls from their neighbors on January 7, 2023, warning them that the fire was rapidly approaching their neighborhood. From 9,000 miles away, they scrambled to protect their home and belongings, relying on their neighbors for help. In the chaos, Jo managed to ask a neighbor to retrieve a precious family heirloom—a certificate signed by Abraham Lincoln, designating Colin’s greatgreat-grandmother as the Postmistress General during the Civil War. This historical artifact, saved by their neighbor Blake, became one of the few precious items spared from the fire’s destruction. Sadly, most of the Drummonds’ belongings and their home were lost in the blaze, along with nearly 75 percent of the houses in their densely populated Big Rock neighborhood.
Despite taking extensive precautions, including a composite roof and Vanguard vents, their home was ultimately destroyed. The fire was ignited when a neighbor's SUV exploded, sending debris into the Drummonds’ garage and sparking the blaze. Fortunately, not all homes in their street were affected, with neighbors like Rosemarie and Thomas Idhe heroically saving several homes. In the aftermath, the Drummonds, like many others, found their community in ruins, but they expressed gratitude for the efforts of the sheriff's deputies and the community fire brigade, who stayed on-site to extinguish lingering fires and prevent further destruction. Jo’s recollection of this traumatic experience underscores the heartache and resilience that came with surviving one of the most devastating wildfires in California’s history.
To the firefighters who faced the firestorm headon. To the volunteers who worked tirelessly to comfort strangers. To the lives we’ve lost—and the lives we’ve saved. We honor you. We thank you. We will never forget your sacrifice.
Our coastline bears scars. Our neighborhoods are quieter. But our resolve? Stronger than ever. As we navigate insurance claims, healing, rebuilding, and everything in between, let’s not lose sight of what matters most: each other. Because in we are not just neighbors. We are family.
This fire has altered our landscape, yes—but it’s also illuminated something unshakable. We are rooted in resilience, bonded by experience, and driven by love for the place we call home. And no fire, no matter how fierce, can burn that down.
Led by Malibu native Keegan
, the Brigade was honored for volunteerism and bravery
By Judy Abel
Empowering community members to act as resource multipliers and provide crucial support to professional first responders during wildfires is the objective of Malibu’s Community Brigade. Instrumental in fighting the cataclysmic Palisades Fire and preventing further tragedy, 50 members of the volunteer initiative were recently honored by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for their outstanding volunteerism and bravery.
Spearheaded by Malibu native Keegan Gibbs, who lost his family home in the Woolsey Fire in 2018, Gibbs, a Malibu safety commissioner realized the necessity for community involvement in emergency situations.
“The brigade program was born out of Woolsey and the acknowledgment that we as a community need to do better to bridge the gap between capabilities of the response from agencies and the preparedness of the communities,” Gibbs shared, who along with other members have been working nearly nonstop since the fire broke out Jan. 7.
The brigade, which has proven essential in saving lives and property, was made official after five years of working with county leaders and then voted on unanimously by the Board of Supervisors in 2023.
“The Community Brigade is a little like CERT (Community Emergency Response Team), but more focused on fires,” Gibbs explained. “That’s the primary threat here in the Santa Monica Mountains.”
The program’s goal is to educate and train community members to be
prepared for, and capable of responding to fires. The initial cohort of just over 40 volunteers started training on September 14, 2024, with members from seven local community brigades participating. These groups are spread across various neighborhoods in the Santa Monica Mountains, including Malibu West, Point Dume, Corral Canyon, Big Rock, Topanga, Ventura County Line, and Hidden Hills.
Last year was spent recruiting and training volunteers from “table top to infield exercises,” Gibbs explained of the 60 hours of education and training required. “Our program was lightly tested with the Broad Fire in November, then pressure-tested with the Franklin Fire in December and then it's not easy to put into words what happened with the Palisades Fire.”
It’s not easy to explain the devastation caused to Malibu and adjacent areas, but without the brigade, it could have been even worse. The brigade put in roughly 5,000 hours evacuating residents even as some members' own homes were at risk.
“Our members were in their own community, knocking on their neighbors’ doors to encourage evacuations and that was time they could've been spending on their own homes," Gibbs described. "Encouragement from a neighborly voice as opposed to an authoritative voice, I think, was extremely valuable because there were several people that initially refused to leave because they didn’t believe the fire was coming or they were under the impression that they were going to be able to fight it by themselves. I think our team did a really good job of being very methodical about
encouraging neighbors to take necessary steps prior to leaving.”
The brigade then conducted structure triage by pulling combustibles away from homes, but soon, the event “quickly became a life, safety priority where it was not just about trying to protect structures, it was trying to prevent people from dying,” Gibbs said.
For his part, Gibbs hasn’t slept much in days while volunteering since the fire broke out, and he has a family with young children. There are 50 men and women in the brigade with similar stories spread out in seven area communities throughout the Santa Monica Mountains. “You get a glimpse of what it's like to be a full-time firefighter and a lot of appreciation for the sacrifice that firefighters and even more so their families make,” Gibbs emphasized. He’s also proud that no one in the brigade suffered injuries.
And the Board of Supervisors is proud, too. Brigade members were honored on January 22 at the Kenneth Hahn Building in downtown LA. Third District Supervisor Lindsey Horvath, L.A. County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone, and Assistant Chief Drew Smith, who was instrumental in organizing and authorizing the brigade honored the group for the impact they made saving lives and property in the program’s first year.
“I wish there was more we could do. It was absolute mayhem,” Gibbs said. “It was an immense honor for us to be a part of these efforts, having a small of an impact that we did, but for them to honor the program was especially in our first year and having these three fires already happen, it’s a true honor for all of us.”.

Early in his career, as a full-time hospitalist at CedarsSinai Tarzana Medical Center, he forged strong bonds with experts and colleagues, creating a network of trusted professionals that ensures his patients always have the support they need. “Medicine is a team effort,” Dr. Cohen says. “I’m not just working for my patients—I’m working with them, and with specialists, to provide the best care possible.”
But Dr. Cohen’s story is about more than just medicine. His lifelong passion for science and human health led him down the path to becoming a physician, and his interests outside the clinic offer a window into the heart of the man behind the white coat. A lifelong sports enthusiast, he’s an avid memorabilia collector, finding joy not
just in the artifacts, but in the stories they tell. This curiosity and passion for learning continue to drive his work as he remains dedicated to the cutting edge of medical advancements. Dr. Cohen’s specialties include preventive care, chronic disease management, and wellness optimization. His patients value his ability to craft care plans that not only address immediate concerns but set them up for long-term health success. It’s an approach that combines science with a deep understanding of each patient’s individual needs, ensuring they not only feel heard, but also empowered to make decisions about their own health.
Outside of his practice, Dr. Cohen is a devoted family man, whose wife and children inspire him daily. “My family keeps me grounded,” he shares. “Their strength, curiosity, and love push me to be better— not just as a doctor, but as a person.”
Through his work, his passion, and his commitment to ongoing growth, Dr. Cohen is setting a new standard for what personalized, compassionate healthcare can look like. His legacy is one of trust, collaboration, and a constant desire to help others achieve their best, healthiest selves. 23622 Calabasas Road Suite 122, Calabasas calabasasmedicinegroup.com
From childhood job site visits with his father to leading multimillion-dollar custom home projects, Avi Yehizkia’s journey in construction has been one of passion, dedication, and continuous growth. Starting with bathroom and kitchen remodels, he quickly expanded his expertise to room additions and large-scale home expansions. His career reached an exciting milestone in 2022 when he was approached to build four custom homes in Hidden Hills—each ranging from 12,000 to 20,000 square feet and featuring state-of-the-art amenities, including underground basements, bowling alleys, saunas, steam rooms, gyms, and private theaters. Avi attributes his success to one key principle: communication. He believes that building a custom home is like solving a puzzle, where every piece must fit seamlessly together. By fostering clear and constant communication among his team, he ensures that every project runs smoothly and efficiently. Challenges and setbacks are inevitable in construction, but Avi remains focused by embracing technology to stay organized and proactive.
What sets Avi apart in the industry is his deep-rooted understanding of construction. Spending 10 hours a day on job
sites, he is involved in every detail, ensuring the highest level of quality and safety. Over his 30-year career, Avi has learned that the best decisions are never made in haste. “Don’t stress over things or make rash decisions—sometimes, the best choices come over a good cup of coffee by the beach,” he reflects. His business approach is built on patience, wisdom, and a strong work ethic—principles he instills in his eldest son, Adee, who is following in his footsteps and learning rapidly
Beyond his professional achievements, Avi and his wife are deeply committed to giving back to the community, engaging in volunteer work with local organizations. Though he prefers to keep his contributions private, his dedication to service is a testament to his values. Avi draws his greatest inspiration not from any single mentor, but from observing those who work hard and achieve success. Above all, he credits his faith in God as a guiding force in his life and career. Married for 21 years and a proud father of three, Avi understands the importance of balancing hard work with family time. His advice to the next generation is simple “Be the best at what you do so that others will always seek you out.” 17142 Ventura Blvd. unit 372 Encino Avi@gladiatorconstuctioninc.com gladiatorconstructioninc.com

There’s something magical about fresh flowers that can transform any space. Whether it’s a soft bouquet on the kitchen table or a bold arrangement in the entryway, flowers bring a sense of warmth, elegance, and natural beauty to your home. Their vibrant colors and delightful fragrances have the power to brighten a room and elevate your mood.
Living in Calabasas, we are fortunate to have access to
some of the freshest and most stunning flowers, thanks to our incredible local farmers markets and dedicated flower growers. Choosing flowers from local growers not only guarantees peak freshness but also supports small farmers and promotes sustainable agriculture. Unlike mass-produced blooms that travel long distances, local ly sourced flowers are cut at their peak and sold directly to consumers, resulting in arrangements that last longer and offer richer colors and more intense fragrances.
When you visit local markets like the Old Town Calabasas Farmers Market, Agoura Hills Farmers’ Market, or Westlake Farmers Market, you’ll be treated to an array of seasonal flowers—from sunflowers and dahlias to fragrant roses and eucalyptus. These fresh blooms are perfect for adding a natural touch of elegance to your home. A simple bouquet on your bedside table can make your mornings more refreshing, while a centerpiece of locally grown flowers can turn any meal into a memorable occasion. Fresh flowers also make a thoughtful gift, whether you're celebrating a special event or simply bringing a little cheer to someone's day.

Today, his firm is known for its meticulous attention to detail, high-quality materials, and personalized approach to outdoor living spaces.
"Our family has always been involved in design and architecture, so my passion for landscape, swimming pools, and outdoor architecture naturally grew from that foundation," Bruno explains. Over the years, his vision has evolved to embrace modern aesthetics while maintaining a timeless appeal, ensuring that every project reflects both beauty and functionality.
One of the hallmarks of BSH Landscape is its client-centric approach. "We interview our clients extensively to understand their personalities, lifestyles, and the architectural style of their homes," Bruno says. This detailed process allows his team to craft outdoor spaces that feel like a natural extension of the home, ensuring harmony between indoor and outdoor environments.
Among his many projects, one stands out as particularly rewarding. "We had the honor of working with the founder of a major commercial landscape company," Bruno shares. "I invested months into designing their space, and the outcome was beyond their imagination." The project not only showcased his commitment to excellence but also reinforced his reputation as a visionary in the industry.
Creating breathtaking landscapes requires more than just artistic vision—it demands a deep understanding of function and sustainability. This meticulous planning ensures that every space is not only visually appealing but also practical and sustainable.
Durability and environmental responsibility are at the core of BSH Landscape's work. "We provide materials that are of the highest quality, ensuring longevity and enhancing the ambiance for our clients." From natural stone to eco-friendly hardscaping elements, every selection is made with an emphasis on beauty and resilience.
Complex landscape designs, especially those featuring water elements, require precision and expertise. "We work closely with engineers to reinforce our custom water features, loggias, swimming pools, fireplaces, and outdoor kitchens with overhead structures," he says. This collaboration guarantees not only the structural integrity of each installation but also the safety of those who enjoy them.
BSH Landscape offers exclusive maintenance services to a select clientele, ensuring that their outdoor spaces remain pristine. "We enhance and groom our clients' properties every six months to maintain perfection," Bruno says. Ahome should be a haven for all its inhabitants, including our four-legged family members. Designing a dog-friendly home doesn’t mean sacrificing style— it’s about striking the perfect balance between comfort, function, and aesthetics. Here are some tips to create a beautiful yet pet-friendly space.
Durable and Stylish Flooring When choosing flooring, opt for durable, scratch-resistant materials like luxury vinyl, ceramic tile, or hardwood with a tough finish. These surfaces are easy to clean and withstand the wear and tear of paws and claws. Area rugs in pet-friendly fabrics, such as indoor-outdoor or washable materials, can provide extra comfort without compromising style.
Pet-Friendly Furniture and Fabrics Select furniture with stainresistant or performance fabrics like microfiber, leather, or Crypton, which resist spills and odors. Avoid delicate materials like silk or velvet that can easily trap fur and dirt. If your pup has a favorite lounging spot, invest in stylish, removable covers to protect upholstery and make cleaning easier.
Dedicated Pet Spaces Create designated areas for your dog to rest and relax. A cozy corner with a stylish pet bed or builtin nook can seamlessly integrate into your home’s design. For
added functionality, consider a multi-purpose furniture piece, like a storage bench with a pet bed underneath.
Smart Storage Solutions Keep your home organized with storage solutions that blend seamlessly into your décor. Use attractive baskets, cabinets, or built-in storage to house pet toys, leashes, and grooming supplies. Having a dedicated space for pet essentials helps maintain a tidy and clutter-free home.
Safe and Secure Outdoor Spaces If you have a backyard, make sure it’s a secure and comfortable space for your pet. Durable fencing, shaded lounging spots, and pet-safe landscaping ensure a safe and enjoyable environment. Consider a designated potty area with pet-friendly turf or gravel to keep your yard looking its best.
Easy-to-Clean Entryways A mudroom or entryway with pet-friendly features can help minimize dirt and mess in the home. Install a durable, easy-to-clean mat at the door, and keep a towel or wipes handy for quick paw cleanups. A built-in pet washing station or deep sink can be a game-changer for homes with active dogs.
Final Touches Incorporate stylish pet accessories, such as sleek food and water bowls, attractive storage bins, and chic pet beds that complement your décor. Wall hooks for leashes and decorative baskets for toys can be both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

As families plan their schedules for the rest of the year, afterschool and summer programs offer more exciting and enriching options. These activities are not only fun but also support children’s academic, physical, emotional, and social development. Whether your child is interested in science, sports, or self-expression, there’s an after-school program to match their passions and help them thrive.
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) clubs are among the most popular choices in 2025. These programs engage students in hands-on learning through building robots, coding, 3D printing, and designing apps or websites. STEM clubs are valued for encouraging logical thinking, problem-solving, and innovation— skills that are critical for future careers in technology and research. At the same time, they keep learning exciting and fun, turning complex academic concepts into creative challenges.
Sports and physical fitness programs continue to play a crucial role in children’s after-school routines. With growing concerns about sedentary lifestyles and excessive screen time, sports activities such as soccer, gymnastics, dance, and martial arts offer an essential outlet for movement. These programs promote physical health, teach teamwork and discipline, and are proven to support mental well-being by reducing stress and boosting confidence.
Creative arts programs have also seen a surge in popularity. Parents are increasingly recognizing the value of imagination and self-expression in their children’s development. After-school arts programs—including painting, theater, photography, sculpture,
and music—give children an emotional outlet and allow them to explore their unique voices. Completing an art project or performing on stage helps build confidence while nurturing a lifelong appreciation for the arts.
As the world becomes more digitally driven, coding and digital literacy programs are becoming a staple of after-school education. These programs teach kids the basics of programming languages like Scratch and introduce them to app development, game design, and website creation. Beyond learning technical skills, kids develop critical thinking, creativity, and a deeper understanding of how technology shapes our world—setting them up for success in tech-focused careers.
Environmental clubs are also gaining momentum, reflecting a growing awareness of climate change and sustainability. These programs inspire children to care for the planet through gardening, recycling, nature walks, and community clean-ups. By participating in hands-on eco-friendly projects, kids learn responsibility and develop a strong sense of environmental stewardship.
Lastly, entrepreneurship programs are sparking interest among young innovators. With the rise of social media influencers and tech entrepreneurs, kids are learning to think creatively and act boldly. These programs teach them how to brainstorm ideas, pitch business concepts, and even launch their own ventures. Along the way, they gain confidence, leadership skills, and basic financial literacy that will serve them well into adulthood.

hen Pepperdine Waves long-distance runner Lizzy Crawford races meter after meter, she thinks about more than herself.
As she set the Pepperdine indoor track record in the women’s 5,000-meter dash and claimed a first-place finish on the first day of the University of Nevada’s Feb. 7-8 Wolf Pack Classic at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center, Crawford thought of the emergency personnel who battled blazes and helped residents impacted by the Palisades Fire, which tore through Pacific Palisades, Malibu, and surrounding beginning on Jan. 7 and burned for 24 days.
“What helps me get through the pain of racing is thinking about serving others through what I am doing,” she said. “It’s good to get a record, but for me it’s never been about glorifying myself. It’s always been about supporting a cause greater than me and encouraging others in the process.”
Crawford’s first-place time of 17 minutes and 25.81 seconds was also a record time in the 5,000 at the convention center.
The 19-year-old sophomore and her Pepperdine teammates also had the wildfire’s victims and first responders on their minds at the beginning of the Waves’ two-month indoor track season. Members of the squad competed with red ribbons in their hair at the Jan. 1718 UW Preview/Mile City at Washington-Dempsey Indoor in Seattle, Washington. Crawford, who also runs cross country, set a school record of 10:00.95 in the 3,000, which she finished 40th out of over 80 competitors.
“I know I would not have been able to race that hard without all of them on my mind,” she said of everyone impacted by the fires and emergency workers. Crawford’s long-distance jaunts aren’t simply about crossing the finish line first.
“My faith is a very important part of my racing,” she explained. “I try to glorify God in my races and be there to do my absolute best for my team. If Jesus can die for me, then I can run a little bit faster for him.”
Crawford said her first-place finish in Nevada was a challenge because she didn’t have pacemaker — an experienced runner who sets pace for time and speed so a runner can focus on running — during the event.
“It was mentally challenging to push through 25 laps all alone and to try and get the school record,” she said. “Luckily, I had goals, and I do a lot of training and workouts pacing myself. It felt really good to set a record in the 5,000. I’m grateful to all the people who helped me achieve it.”
Crawford, a former youth soccer player, got her running start as a freshman at Horizon High School in Thornton, Colorado. Initially, she competed in cross country to stay in shape for soccer. However, Crawford caught a runner’s high with the sport. She also thought she was a better distance athlete than a soccer player, so track and cross country became her sports focus in her 10th-grade year.
She bounded blazing times. She was an all-conference runner in cross country, and her time of 18:04 in the 5K is the secondbest time in Horizon High history. She is also on the all-time top 10 lists for the school in the 1,600 and 3,200.
Crawford realized she could compete in college and reached out to Pepperdine head coach Lauren Floris and assistant coach Victor Pataky. After two visits to Pepperdine, Crawford committed to be a Wave.
Her freshman year in cross country was standout. Crawford jaunted the second-fastest 6K time in program history with a 20:52.2 at the Bronco Invitational. She was the top Waves’ runner in all five of the races she scampered in.
“The funny thing about me is I’m never ever satisfied with my performances,” she said. “It’s not like I’m actually going to break a world record, but if I ever did break a world record in a race, I still would never be satisfied. I can run faster. It’s not about me being physically good at running. It is about the mental side. I have always had some type of mental connection of pushing myself really hard.”

Every April, communities around the world come together to celebrate Earth Day—a reminder of our responsibility to preserve and protect the environment for future generations. Since its inception on April 22, 1970, Earth Day has served as a call to action, inspiring millions to advocate for sustainability and conservation. As we approach this year’s celebration, there’s no better time to teach our children about the importance of caring for our planet and engaging in activities that promote a greener future.
Celebrate Earth Day with your family by attending the City of Calabasas’ annual Earth Day Celebration and Green Expo each April at the Las Virgenes Creek site. This vibrant event gathers exhibitors from across Los Angeles and Ventura counties to highlight local environmental efforts and promote sustainable living. With over 2,000 attendees expected, visitors can explore interactive booths, learn about energy-saving strategies, and discover easy ways to reduce their carbon footprint.
More than just informative, the Green Expo is a community celebration of sustainability and innovation. Families will enjoy hands-on activities, explore cutting-edge eco-friendly solutions, and gain practical tips for living greener every day. Businesses, nonprofits, and public agencies will be on hand to share products, services, and ideas that make going green both accessible and inspiring.
Beyond attending the Green Expo, there are numerous ways to teach children about environmental stewardship while making lasting memories:
Plant a Tree or Garden – Whether it’s in your backyard or as part of a community initiative, planting a tree or starting a garden teaches kids about the importance of greenery in combating climate change.
Clean Up a Local Park or Beach – Organizing a small cleanup day with friends and family helps children understand the impact of litter on the environment.
Explore Nature – Take a hike, visit a botanical garden, or go birdwatching to foster a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
Switch to EcoFriendly Habits –Encourage children to take shorter showers, turn off lights when leaving a room, and use reusable water bottles and bags.
The importance of Earth Day takes on even greater significance in the wake of natural disasters like the Palisades Fire and the LA fires. These devastating wildfires left large portions of our local landscapes charred and lifeless. However, nature is resilient. As we’ve seen over time, hillsides blackened by fire begin to sprout new growth, wildlife slowly returns, and ecosystems start to rebuild themselves.
– Turn recycling into a fun family challenge by seeing who can repurpose items in the most
By observing these natural cycles, we can teach our children a valuable lesson: while destruction can be swift, recovery and healing are possible with care, patience, and action. Just as the land rejuvenates, we, too, can take steps to restore balance to our environment. Through reforestation efforts, water conservation, and fire prevention education, we can support the earth’s recovery and ensure a thriving habitat for future generations.
Earth Day is more than just a date on the calendar—it’s a movement that invites us all to be better stewards of the planet. Whether by attending the Calabasas Earth Day Celebration/Green Expo, adopting greener habits at home, or simply taking a moment to appreciate nature’s beauty, every effort counts. By involving our children in these efforts, we instill in them a lifelong commitment to environmental responsibility.
Let’s celebrate Earth Day not just as an annual event but as a daily practice in protecting and preserving our home—Mother Earth.

ISR’s unique results come from fully customized, safe, and effective one-on-one lessons with only your child and the Instructor in the water. What your child learns—and how they learn it—is what sets ISR apart from traditional swimming lessons. Always prioritizing safety, ISR emphasizes competence, which builds confidence and lays the foundation for a lifetime of enjoyment in and around the water. Even infants as young as six months old learn the fundamental ISR skill of rolling onto their backs to float, rest, and breathe. Infants and toddlers who are not yet walking independently are taught to maintain this position until help arrives. This skill remains just as important for older students as they incorporate more swimming techniques. As toddlers and young children develop more physical skills on land, they become ready to advance in the water.

Longtime residents understand all too well the profound trauma of losing everything to a wildfire—the devastation of losing a home, the collapse of businesses, the unraveling of a once-familiar community, and the disruption of daily routines and stability.
In the aftermath, how does one recognize the need for professional mental health support? What are the signs that indicate counseling could be beneficial? And for parents, the challenge becomes even more complex—how do they determine whether their children or teens need help processing their emotions and frustrations? Adolescents naturally experience emotional highs and lows as part of their development, but when compounded by trauma, professional support can be crucial in helping them navigate their grief and uncertainty.
To explore these concerns, we spoke with Dr. Melanie Agan, a local clinical therapist and somatic experience practitioner specializing in youth mental health therapy.
“With regard to signs that an adolescent might need help, if a teenager shuts down and stops communicating, including his friends and focuses inward in a manner that he hasn’t done before, parents should consider suggesting he get some counseling,” Agan commented. “However, they should not force a teenager to get services.”
Agan explained that she utilizes a polyvagal approach, meaning that she assesses a client’s nervous system patterns when providing counseling so as to determine how his autonomic nervous system relates to emotions and behaviors.
Dr. Melanie Agan
“We have all heard that when a person is under stress he has a fight, flight, or freeze response and the concern is that one can get stuck in a “freeze” response to stress and can get stuck in a shut-down state when he withdraws. Therapy can help a teen who is stuck in such a “freeze” state.
With regard to younger children, if they withdraw because they are scared or stressed, play therapy can help them to open up and express themselves.
“The use of sand tray therapy which provides a younger child with figurines in a container of sand helps them to express what they are feeling,” Argo explained. “It encourages children to process their trauma in a safe space.”
Readers have several resources available as they consider mental health counseling and support. Those include: Malibu Boys & Girls Club’s Disaster Relief Center, which provides nocost trauma-informed crisis counseling services for youth, families, and the community at large.

Just 25 miles north of Los Angeles, down oaklined roads and nestled in the heart of Hidden Valley in Thousand Oaks, Mizel Estate Wines awaits. The Santa Monica Mountains rise around you while the rest of the world falls away.
"dazzle the palate with lingering flavors of fruit and spice."
The name “Mizel” is a blend of the names of the owners, Michael and Zelene Fowler, who established the vineyard in 2014 with the goal of creating worldclass wines.
Mizel Estate Wines are grown on their 38-acre estate in the Malibu Coast AVA (American Viticultural Area). The geography of Mizel Estate, located on a fertile valley floor protected by mountains, provides ideal growing conditions for exceptional fruit.
When you taste Mizel’s luxury wines, you drink in the pure expression of their vineyard. Mizel’s Winemaker, Guillaume Fabre, says, “The real secret to Mizel’s superb red wines is the ground they come from. The soil brings the tannin structure and creates a certain elegance that is so difficult to find – and impossible to add.”
Mizel Estate Wines is a boutique, limited-production winemaker, focused on quality. Sustainably grown and hand-harvested, only the highest-quality grapes are used for Mizel wines. “The Mizel team has control over the entire winemaking process, which allows us to consistently produce excellent wines,” says Michael Fowler.
Mizel grows six French grape varieties on their estate — Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Mourvèdre, Grenache and Syrah. Throughout the growing season, the vines are nurtured under the direction of Estate Manager Hector Ambriz and Winemaker Guillaume Fabre, who bring forth the premium characteristics of Mizel’s fruit. As harvest approaches, the grapes are carefully monitored to ensure that each variety is harvested at its peak.
The winemaking commences in Paso Robles with the crush and fermentation. Afterward, each grape varietal is aged in premier French oak for 18 months. Michael Fowler says, “There is a little bit of an art and science to figuring out which types of oak and how old the barrels should be for each varietal. Guillaume is the expert, and he knows best.”
When the aging is complete, the Fowlers meet with Fabre to taste wine from over 30 different barrels and decide which ones to blend. This passionate winemaking team combines their expertise and perspectives to skillfully blend Mizel Estate’s signature wines — First Impression Bordeaux Blend, Easy to Please Grenache, and Smooth Touch Syrah.
The results of the Mizel team’s efforts shine through in their opulent red wines. Mizel’s nuanced, velvety red wines dazzle the palate with lingering flavors of fruit and spice.
Mizel invites you to join their sense of wonder with Mizel Lifestyle Experiences.
On the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, visit Mizel’s private estate for an afternoon wine tasting in our breathtaking vineyard. Mix and mingle with other wine enthusiasts on their stunning outdoor terrace while enjoying a flight of Mizel’s exquisite wines.
Free your inner artist on second Sundays with an immersive Art and Wine class. Surrounded by idyllic vistas, create your masterpiece under the gentle guidance of renowned artist Bobbie Rich. On fourth Sundays, commune with nature and embrace tranquility with Mizel Mindfulness Yoga and Sound Bath.
Mizel’s Wine Club curates memorable moments for members and guests.
Mizel Wine Club members receive invitations to exclusive member-only events and enjoy exceptional privileges on Mizel’s gorgeous estate, including complimentary wine-tasting events and private annual visits with friends.
At its core, Mizel Estate Wines is purpose-driven, donating a portion of wine proceeds to the Mizel Family Foundation, which provides educational and career opportunities for individuals with unique abilities who experience special needs.
When you visit Mizel Estate, you step away from pretentious, hectic city life and journey down a road less traveled, where you’ll find fine wine, genuine people, and unexpected delights.

Shibuya Sushi Bar has built a reputation for offering some of the freshest and most flavorful sushi in the West Valley. Since its founding in 1997 by Mark Shibuya, this intimate sushi destination has remained a favorite among locals, celebrities, and food enthusiasts alike. Known for its highquality ingredients and meticulously crafted dishes, Shibuya continues to push the boundaries of traditional sushi while maintaining deep respect for its roots.
Ingredient freshness is paramount at Shibuya. Every morning, Head Chef TomSan, along with his team, inspects each ingredient with a meticulous eye. If any item doesn’t meet their exacting standards, it’s immediately sent back. Their longstanding relationships with trusted vendors, cultivated over 30 years, ensure that only the highest-quality fish and ingredients make it onto diners’ plates. This dedication to quality has helped solidify Shibuya’s reputation for excellence.
Balancing tradition and innovation is at the core of Shibuya’s philosophy. Classic sushi preparation methods, some dating back to the 1600s, are honored, while contemporary flavors are seamlessly incorporated to create what TomSan calls “Flavor Bombs.” The simplicity of a perfectly prepared tuna nigiri remains a staple, but modern adaptations—such as unique marinades and bold flavor pairings—enhance the dining experience for today’s discerning palate.
TomSan’s journey at Shibuya began in 1999, when he joined as an assistant chef with no prior experience. Under Mark’s guidance, he trained extensively in the art of sushi preparation, mastering techniques that set Shibuya apart. In the early days, the restaurant offered a limited menu featuring set sashimi options, but due to high demand, it quickly evolved into a more dynamic à la carte experience. Signature items such as the Shibuya
House Roll—dreamt up by Mark himself— highlight the restaurant’s creativity, while fresh bluefin tuna, never frozen, remains a defining feature of their offerings.
Over the years, Shibuya has developed a robust menu featuring standout dishes like Seared Pepper Albacore, washed with Cognac and flambéed with Tellicherry peppers, and the Salmon Sushi topped with sweet kelp. Other favorites include the Number 15 Roll (a combination of salmon and shrimp), the 18 Roll (featuring freshwater eel and crab), and the offmenu secret, Sushi Pizza—a delectable blend of chopped fish, smelt egg, and eel sauce, baked to perfection.
With an intimate dining space and a devoted following, Shibuya is no stranger to long wait times. However, head server Lena and front-of-house manager Adrian ensure a seamless experience, setting proper expectations for both local patrons and visitors from afar. The restaurant’s popularity skyrocketed when the Kardashian family became regulars, often entering through the back door to avoid crowds. As word spread, Shibuya
became a destination for sushi lovers across Southern California, with peak-hour waits reaching up to 90 minutes.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Shibuya adapted by offering takeout-only service, allowing it to survive and eventually thrive under new leadership. In 2021, Steve V, owner of Brothers Sushi in Woodland Hills, recognized Shibuya’s legacy and spent a year building trust with Mark before officially taking over in June 2022. Today, TomSan continues to honor Mark’s vision while introducing new offerings such as fresh caviar, real crab, A5 Wagyu sushi, and the Hidden Hills Hand Roll—a testament to Shibuya’s ability to evolve while staying true to its roots.
As Shibuya embraces the future, it continues to shine as a symbol of exceptional sushi craftsmanship, where tradition and innovation seamlessly blend. Whether you’re a loyal guest or discovering it for the first time, dining at Shibuya promises an unforgettable experience. Visit shibuya.restaurantsworld.com to savor some of the finest sushi available locally.

Ice Lemon twist & lavender sprig (for garnish)
2 oz tequila blanco
¾ oz fresh lime juice
½ oz Cointreau (or triple sec)
½ oz agave syrup
2 fresh strawberries, sliced
3 fresh basil leaves
Ice Salt rim & basil sprig (for garnish)
4 cucumber slices
4 fresh mint leaves
¾ oz fresh lime juice
½ oz honey syrup (equal parts honey & warm water)
3 oz sparkling water
Ice
Cucumber ribbon & mint sprig (for garnish)
1 puff pastry sheet
3/4 cup ricotta cheese
3 ounces sun-dried tomatoes
1/2 cup kalamata olives
1/2 cup green olives
6 marinated artichoke hearts
1/2 cup sliced grape tomatoes
1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese
Salt to taste
Black ground pepper to taste
1 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
A drizzle of olive oil
1 egg (for egg wash)
Directions
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Roll out the puff pastry into an even layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Spread the ricotta cheese evenly on top of the puff pastry. Top with sun-dried tomatoes, kalamata olives, green olives, chopped artichoke hearts, grape tomatoes, and feta cheese. Add salt, pepper, and dried oregano with a drizzle of olive oil on top. Fold in the edges of the pastry, creating a crust, and then brush with egg wash. Place baking sheet in the oven and bake for 20 minutes or until pastry is golden and crisp. Allow to cool for a few minutes and garnish with baby arugula and more olives, salt, pepper, and olive oil. Enjoy!
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
2 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 cup cane sugar
1 tablespoon lemon zest
3/4 cup whole milk Greek yogurt
1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for the pan
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups blueberries, fresh or frozen Lemon glaze, optional, for serving
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and grease an 8x4 or 9x5-inch loaf pan. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt and set aside. Place the cane sugar and lemon zest in a separate large bowl. Use your fingers to work the zest into the sugar until well combined. This helps the zest release its fragrant oils. Next, add the yogurt, olive oil, eggs, and vanilla and whisk to combine. Now, blend the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients and stir until combined. Fold in the blueberries; the batter will be thick. Transfer the batter into the prepared loaf pan and use a spatula to smooth the top. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, or just until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Let cool completely before removing from the pan. If desired, drizzle with lemon glaze before slicing and serving.
