CMS has received special permission to screen a film by renowned documentarian Werner Herzog in which he investigates the human brain, looking for clues as to why a hunk of tissue can produce profound thoughts and feelings while considering the philosophical, ethical and social implications of fast-advancing neural technology. Q&A to follow with NeuroRights Foundation Chairman Rafael Yuste, MD, PhD, and Fort Collins neurologist Sean Pazauskie, MD. Dessert and popcorn will be served.

PARKING AND GETTING AROUND VAIL

CMS has negotiated a reduced valet parking fee of $25 for guests staying at The Lodge at Vail. Check-in begins at 4 p.m. Guests of The Lodge at Vail arriving before 4 p.m. may use valet parking and store luggage with the bellman to be taken to your guest room at 4 p.m. Electric vehicle chargers are available in The Lodge at Vail garage. Those staying offsite can utilize the daytime valet rate of $35 based on availability. Free daytime parking is available in the Vail Village parking structure at 501 N Frontage Rd W. Overnight parking in this parking structure is $35. Additional free daytime parking and $15 overnight parking is available at the Red Sandstone garage at 559 N Frontage Rd.

Vail is home to one of the largest, free, public transportation systems in the country. Within the Town of Vail (Golden Peak to Lionshead), the bus is free. Guests can also travel anywhere from East Vail to West Vail, free of charge. Attendees and guests are encouraged to jump on the bus when venturing to outlying hiking and biking trails, as parking is limited at many trailheads.

Michael H. Gendel, MD, presents an evidence-based look at physician workstress syndromes of burnout, teaching you methods for managing stress.

Aneesh Garg, DO, CAQ, will challenge you to embrace failure as a mechanism of growth rather than something to be feared and avoided.

10:30-11:30 a.m. Medication Errors in the Electronic Age Medication errors continue in the era of electronic health records, e-prescribing, and computerized physician order entry. Through a series of case-based examples, Eric Zacharias, MD, will explore how these errors occur and suggest practical approaches to reduce them.

AMA President-elect Bruce Scott, MD, will talk about the AMA’s Recovery Plan for America’s Physicians, why it’s necessary, and how it will strengthen our physician community to meet the incredible health challenges yet to come.

1-2:30 p.m. Microaggressions, Allyship and Upstanding CU Anschutz faculty Rita Lee, MD, presents an interactive session on microaggressions and strategies to be an effective ally. Attendees will also practice upstanding skills to intervene when we experience or witness microaggressions. This session is part three of the Foundations in Equity series, but can also be experienced without the previous two modules.

CMS members will present research in three categories: primary research, case report and evidence-based review. Posters will be projected and presented to a live audience, and awards will be given in various categories during the President’s Gala.

The President’s Gala is the highlight of the weekend, featuring the passing of the gavel from outgoing CMS President Patrick Pevoto, MD, MBA, to incoming CMS President Omar Mubarak, MD, MBA. Dress is semi-formal. Enjoy a buffet dinner, dessert, music and dancing.

THINGS TO DO IN VAIL

Vail Farmers’ Market and Art Show Sept. 24

The Vail Farmers Market features over 100 tents that sell unique, made-in-Colorado artisan items and food. Enjoy strolling down East Meadow Drive in Vail while tasting treats from Colorado. Parking for the Market is at the Vail Village Parking or Lionshead Parking.

Golf in Vail

The Vail Golf Club, nestled at the base of the Gore Mountain Range, presents golfers with a unique and scenic 18hole, par 71 experience. The Vail Valley’s most walkable course, the golf club is open to the public and features a full service pro shop, driving range, and Grill on the Gore restaurant, featuring Rocky Mountain fare at its finest.

Golfers enjoy playing greens that follow the Gore Creek and lay adjacent to the White River National Forest. The Vail Golf Club also offers an ADA accessible cart for those with additional needs.

Betty Ford Alpine Gardens

The highest botanical gardens in the world at 8,200 feet with a unique collection of alpine, sub-alpine and other mountain plants and flowers. Open from dawn to dusk daily and free for all ages ($20 suggested donation per person), the Gardens are a fantastic spot to start your day or unwind from a day of adventures. Start your visit at the Education Center, just west of the Gardens and Ford Park. Discover and learn about the alpine environment and its plants through self-guided informational displays.

Ride the Gondola

Vail offers two options for scenic gondola rides – the Eagle Bahn Gondola from Lionshead and Gondola One out of Vail Village. Tickets are required for adults, but kids 12 and under ride free with the purchase of one adult ticket.

Hikes for beginners, intermediate and experts

• Eagle’s Loop – This is a great one-mile hike for families with young kids. Located at the top of Vail Mountain, it requires a ticket purchase to ride the Eagle Bahn gondola.

• Meadow Loop – This 2.1-mile hike is another good one for families on Vail Mountain. It starts at Mid-Vail and requires a ticket purchase to ride Gondola 1.

• Booth Falls/Lake (East Vail) – Some consider Booth Lake to be the best lake in the Vail Valley. The lengthier hike (4.1 miles) to the lake is more strenuous. There is also a shorter option (2 miles) to Booth Falls that is considered to be more moderate in difficulty.

• Gore Creek/Lake Trails (East Vail) – The beauty of the Gore Creek/Lake Trail is that you can go for as short or long as you like. It takes roughly 5.5 miles to reach Gore Lake, and there is breathtaking scenery the entire way. You’ll spend most of the hike listening to the sounds of Gore Creek as you walk beside it, and there is lots of shade to keep you cool in the warmer months.

• Grouse Lake Trail (Minturn) – The Grouse Lake trailhead is located just before the town of Minturn. This 4.6-mile hike takes you to one of the prettiest lakes in the valley.

Biking with a view

The Vail Valley offers miles of paved trail/road-riding options for casual, recreational family rides. The Gore Creek Trail offers 15-plus miles of fun flats to rolling hills through aspen groves from East Vail to West Vail (and beyond to Avon and Edwards if you choose). The scenery along the river is stunning and there are many options to stop for snacks and picnic lunch. It’s always fun to get around and explore the Villages on a bike — simply riding around Lionshead over to Vail Village and stopping at the parks and river is a fun way to get around and see more than you might on two feet.

Scenic drive for fall colors

Enjoy the designated scenic byway of Battle Mountain Pass with lots of pull-offs for the perfect photo opportunities. Take Highway 24 south through the historic town of Minturn up the winding pass toward Redcliff. From here, loop back to Vail on Shrine Pass Road, a well-graded gravel road.

Running on Empty: Physician Stress and Wellbeing, Saturday, 8-9 a.m.

Speaker: Michael H. Gendel, MD

Michael H. Gendel, MD has served as the Medical Director Emeritus of Colorado Physician Health Program (CPHP) since 2009. Dr. Gendel served as Medical Director from 1999 to 2009 and served as Associate Medical Director between 1989 and 1999. He provides oversight of assessment, referral, and monitoring functions to physicians with health concerns. In addition, Dr. Gendel is the past president of the Federation of State Physician Health Programs (FSPHP).

Failure: How Your Relationship to it Affects Your Patients and You, Saturday, 9-10 a.m.

Speaker: Aneesh Garg, DO, CAQ

Aneesh Garg, DO, CAQ, is a nationally recognized, non-surgical sports medicine physician specializing in treating dynamic athletes of all ages and skill levels from head to toe. Dr. Garg serves as a team physician for USA Hockey and US Soccer and has served as team physician, medical director, and tournament physician for high school and college teams. He has also served on the sports medicine teaching faculty at numerous universities and hospitals, and has extensively presented his experience and knowledge to health care professionals at national meetings.

Medication Errors in the Electronic Age, Saturday, 10:30-11:30 a.m.

Speaker: Eric Zacharias, MD

Eric Zacharias, MD is COPIC’s Director of Medical Education and a member of the Department of Patient Safety and Risk Management. He is also an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He practiced Internal Medicine for 25 years in an independent, multi-specialty group. He enjoys running, cooking, family time, and college sports.

• Please complete the evaluation form accessed through the main menu of eeds™ and then you will have the option to print or save your CME certificate

COMPAC lunch: Why We Need a Recovery Plan for America’s Physicians, Saturday, 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Speaker: Bruce A. Scott, MD

Bruce A. Scott, MD, is a board-certified otolaryngologist from Louisville, Ky., and president-elect of the American Medical Association. Dr. Scott has been a leader in medicine throughout his career and a member of the House of Delegates (HOD) for more than 25 years. First elected speaker of the HOD in 2019, he previously served as vice speaker and joined the AMA Board of Trustees in 2015. He is president of Kentuckiana Ear, Nose & Throat, medical director of Premier Ambulatory Surgery Center, and holds a clinical appointment at the University of Louisville School of Medicine.

Microaggressions, Allyship, and Upstanding, Saturday, 1-2:30 p.m.

Speaker: Rita Lee, MD

Rita Lee, MD is a Professor of General Internal Medicine. She has been a passionate advocate for underserved populations and a clinician-educator. She is the Director of the Health Equity in Action Lab, which is part of the Anschutz Medical Campus Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement.
