Page 1

Welcome to the Summer 2025 issue of Colmore Life magazine.

In this edition, you can enjoy a rich blend of content covering the latest in leisure and hospitality openings, business news, and so much more.

Colmore BID continues to deliver above the status quo, ensuring that our community remains clean, safe, and welcoming. This steadfast commitment to our core responsibilities is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our team.

From the outset, our vision was clear: to create a vibrant, thriving community in Birmingham’s commercial district that fosters innovation, creativity, growth, and sustainability. I am proud to say that we have made significant strides towards this vision. Our collaboration with ConsensusPower has been a cornerstone of our efforts, enabling the creation of the Birmingham energy community. You can read more about what this means for your business in the further pages.

Our recent Annual Meeting saw us come together with you, our levy payers, to celebrate the key projects delivered in the first year of BID4 and look ahead at what’s to come in 2025. The needs of our levy payers continue to evolve and our expansive city-centre management experience, paired with our continued commitment to keep listening and responding to business needs, means we will deliver a better service for all.

One of the highlights of 2025 is our annual open art competition and exhibition – Birmingham Open 25. The competition brought together hundreds

‘Birmingham Open 25 not only celebrates and champions our community of emerging artists but also reinforces the city’s reputation as a cultural hub’

of talented Birmingham artists, displaying their incredible work in two outdoor exhibitions at Snow Hill Square and Victoria Square. Birmingham Open 25 not only celebrates and champions our community of emerging artists but also reinforces the city’s reputation as a cultural hub. Seeing the city centre come alive with creativity is truly inspiring, and I am excited to see how this competition will continue to grow.

I’m personally really looking forward to the upcoming Colmore Food Festival 2025, which returns to Victoria Square once again on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 July. This event promises to be a fantastic showcase of Birmingham’s hospitality sector, bringing together the best in our District and the wider city’s food scene.

The first weekend in July is set to be a big one for Birmingham, and it’s great to see Colmore Food Festival forming part of the exciting city calendar.

I would also like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Mayor Richard Parker for his participation in the Big Interview in this issue.

Our ambition for the second year of BID4 is to build on the foundations we have laid this year. We will continue to drive forward delivery of key activity and campaigns in the city-centre, support our businesses to grow and create new opportunities for our community to engage with the city.

Consultant,

DID YOU KNOW? Colmore BID has established a partnering arrangement with ConsensusPower to launch the Birmingham energy community, which will help the Business District run on low-cost, clean power. Interested in getting involved? See Page 18

Big Interview

In an exclusive interview with Colmore Life magazine, Mayor of the West Midlands, Richard Parker, answers a range of questions about his first year in office, the future of the many business sectors across the city centre and safety and security in the Business District

Thanks for taking the time to speak to us today Richard. How has your first year in office been?

It’s been a big year, and I’m proud of the progress we’ve made. I came into office to get things done and we’ve already started to deliver. We’ve taken the first step to bring buses back under public control, backed more social housing than ever before and helped over 55,000 local people into training so they can get better jobs.

I’ve worked closely with business leaders across Birmingham - including here in Colmore BID - because when our city centre thrives, the whole region benefits. This year has been about laying the foundations, cutting through red tape and starting to unlock the potential of places like Colmore Row to be even stronger hubs for business, culture and city life.

There have been lots of conversations this year around city centre transport modes – from bus, road, rail and bike. Once bus franchising is complete, what is your first priority

‘My priorities are clear: jobs, growth, homes and journeys’

for the future of the city centre public transport model?

Eight out of ten public transport journeys in our region are by bus, so franchising is about putting passengers first - simpler, cheaper, and more reliable services. But we’re not stopping there. We’re now planning a network of cross-city routes that run through the centre to better connect key destinations and reduce pressure on people changing in the middle of town. That makes a real difference to how easy it is to get into Colmore for work, meetings or a night out.

After the success of our free preChristmas bus travel offer - which boosted the city’s night-time economy – we’re looking at how to do more of that. And with new rail stations opening in Moseley and the Black Country, plus the Metro extension to Dudley, we’re creating more direct routes into the heart of Birmingham.

Meanwhile, we are working closely with Birmingham City Council on plans to improve cycling and walking links in and around the city centre. And we

are exploring with Government and Birmingham City FC owner Tom Wagner proposals for a tram line out to east Birmingham.

What plans do you have in supporting children and young people? From employment opportunities, career pathways and social support – how do you plan on ensuring those young people have the courage, opportunity and confidence to enable a successful career pathway?

The West Midlands has one of the youngest populations in Europe. That should be a huge advantage – but only if we create real pathways into work.

That’s why I’ve pledged to create 20,000 new opportunities –apprenticeships, work placements, training – by working with businesses across the region. And over 55,000 people have already taken up skills training since I took office, with a focus on sectors like health, digital and construction.

We’re also investing in areas like the

Birmingham Knowledge Quarter which is set to deliver 20,000 jobs in advanced manufacturing, health-tech and digital. That’s a game-changer for our city’s future workforce.

We’ve had an array of new leisure and hospitality businesses open in our District in the last twelve months which has been really exciting. How do you plan on supporting those businesses, that traditionally struggle the most with inconsistent consumer spending habits, in driving footfall through their doors?

The hospitality sector plays a huge part in the life of our city centre – whether it’s the bars and restaurants along Colmore Row or the events that bring people together after work.

I know these businesses have had a tough time. That’s why I’ve committed another £15 million in grants to help small businesses grow, take on staff, and cut energy bills. And through Business Growth West Midlands, thousands of hours of free expert advice are available to help businesses adapt and thrive. I’ve visited restaurants in Birmingham who’ve benefited from this support –alongside breweries and butchers in the broader supply chain.

I’ve also worked closely with Colmore BID and others on transport and safety – so people feel confident coming into the city in the evening. It’s part of a wider plan to make Birmingham a more attractive, dynamic place to visit, work and stay. And buses are so important as we look to develop our new network we have to make sure that buses serve our leisure and hospitality businesses at all times of day.

New and younger professionals under 30 make up an increasing percentage of the city’s professional population. What advice do you have for young people at the early stages of their professional careers?

Birmingham’s a city of ambition –and it’s full of opportunity for young professionals. My advice? Say yes to everything that helps you grow. Find mentors. Volunteer. Keep learning.

My own journey wasn’t traditional – I studied later in life and didn’t go the usual route. That’s why I’m passionate about making sure success in Birmingham doesn’t depend on who you know, but what you bring.

And there’s so much to be excited

about from major investment in the Knowledge Quarter to the creative and cultural sectors growing again. If you’re starting your career here, you’re in the right place.

We’re immensely proud of our placemaking projects that bring under used and under-utilised spaces to life and encourage visitors to use city spaces in ways they might not have done traditionally. How important do you think the public realm is in creating healthy high streets, and how do you plan to support this?

A strong city centre isn’t just about buildings – it’s about what happens between them. That’s why placemaking is so important. Projects that make our streets more inviting, our squares more usable, and our spaces feel safer all add up to stronger footfall, better business and more pride in place. Colmore BID gets that – and their work on wayfinding, safety and festivals is a brilliant example of that thinking in action.

That’s why we’ve supported local councils to explore how they can use culture, heritage and public realm to boost their high streets. And we’re backing plans for more open-air markets across the city too - bringing life back into underused spaces.

What are your plans in supporting the community with crime and anti-social behaviour, especially for women and young people in the city?

Everyone deserves to feel safe in our city – whether you’re heading home from work, out with friends, or just passing through.

That’s why I’m working with the Police and Crime Commissioner and with local partners like Colmore BID on practical steps to improve safety. From better lighting and CCTV to targeted work with women’s safety groups, we’re backing action – not just words.

Our Women’s Night Safety Charter

is part of this, alongside support for projects like the Safe and Sound partnership and the work of groups like WAITS and the Hollie Gazzard Trust.

What are your plans to support Birmingham’s cultural sector, that have faced one of the biggest impacts of local authority cuts?

Culture is core to Birmingham’s identity –and it’s essential to the life and rhythm of the city centre.

I’ve secured new national partnerships with major cultural institutions and trade unions that will bring funding, jobs, and better opportunities for local creatives. This isn’t just about the arts – it’s about economic growth, tourism, and attracting talent to our region.

From Peaky Blinders and This Town to the BBC’s move into Digbeth with MasterChef and Silent Witness, we’re showing the world what Birmingham has to offer. It’s good for business and good for the brand of the city.

What does the next year in office look like for you and the West Midlands Combined Authority?

My priorities are clear: jobs, growth, homes and journeys.

For the city centre, that means getting the basics right – better transport, stronger business support, more footfall. It means unlocking brownfield sites for affordable homes, so more people live close to where they work and where they play. It means continuing to back the culture and creativity that make Birmingham a place people want to visit, invest in, and stay.

And crucially – it means collaboration.

We’ll keep working hand-in-hand with BIDs and others to make sure this part of the city continues to grow, thrive and lead the way.

‘Projects that make our streets more inviting, our squares more usable, and our spaces feel safer all add up to stronger footfall, better business and more pride in place. Colmore BID gets that – and their work on wayfinding, safety and festivals is a brilliant example of that thinking in action’

Supporting Ladywood in 2025

AN UPDATE ON COLMORE BID’S ONGOING ACTIVITY TO SUPPORT THE LADYWOOD COMMUNITY

Our commitment to Ladywood remains unwavering and this year, we’re keen to build on our successes of 2024 and make a difference to more children and families than ever before.

BULLS IN THE CITY

We’ve proudly funded a mini calf on the ‘Bulls in the City’ trail by Birmingham Hospice directly for the Ladywood community. This mini calf will be creatively decorated by local children and displayed in a window in the District, forming part of the wider art trail, live in the city-centre from 16 July to 14 September.

Bulls in the City is not just about art – we wanted to use this opportunity to engage with the local community and give children a new platform to express their creativity. The children who decorated the calf are visiting it in situ to see their fantastic artwork on display and share the inspiration behind their design.

COLMORE FOOD FESTIVAL 2025

Another exciting event on our calendar this year and another opportunity to bring our communities closer is Colmore Food Festival 2025. We are welcoming children from St John’s and St Peter’s C of E Academy to the festival to enjoy an educational workshop and a delicious Colmore Food Festival lunch. This initiative provides children with opportunities and experiences they wouldn’t traditionally have access to – a key aim of our work in the Ladywood ward.

BUSINESS WORKSHOPS

Our efforts to support the Ladywood community extend much beyond these events. In 2025, we are collaborating with various businesses in the District to deliver educational workshops to children, providing them with valuable skills and knowledge. Thank you so much to all of our business community who have expressed an interest in participating so far.

These workshops will cover a range of topics, from arts, science and technology, ensuring that children receive a well-rounded learning experience. Would you and your business like to join us in hosting a

workshop? If so, please email me on Kelsey.Dwyer@colmorebid.co.uk to find out more.

DONATIONS

Donating to those less fortunate is a continued key part of our work in Ladywood. Thank you so much to our District businesses Colliers and Rothschilds, who very kindly collected and donated over 60 Easter Eggs. Their generosity brought joy to many children in Ladywood and make Easter a memorable one.

Colmore BID is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of children and families in the community. Together, with the support of local businesses and generous donors, we continue to build a bright future for Ladywood.

Martyn’s Law

What does it mean for your business?

By

The Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill, also known as Martyn’s Law, was introduced to Parliament with the aim of improving the UK’s preparedness for terrorist attacks. The bill required certain venues and events to take steps to reduce the risk of harm from terrorism.

THE PURPOSE OF THE BILL WAS TO:

To improve public safety by reducing the risk of harm from terrorism, to ensure that premises and events are better prepared to respond to a terrorist attack and to require larger venues and events to take steps to reduce their vulnerability to terrorist attacks. In April 2025, the bill received royal assent and became the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025.

In this piece, we are sharing a general overview of the new legislation.

WHAT IS MARTYN’S LAW, AND WHY WAS IT CREATED?

The origins for this legislation followed the series of terrorist attacks that took place in 2017, and the subsequent recommendations from the Manchester Arena Inquiry in 2021 that referenced a need for such legalisation.

The legislation places a duty on those responsible for certain

premises or events to consider the risk of terrorism at their venue or event and how they would respond to an attack. There will be a requirement to implement reasonably practicable security and public protection procedures, depending on the capacity of the premises or event.

VENUE QUALIFICATIONS

Small premises with a capacity of 200-799 will be classed as Standard Tier and will be required to put in place easy-to-follow procedures that reduce the risks of physical harm to any individuals exposed to a terrorist attack.

Larger premises and events with a capacity of 800+ will be classed as Enhanced Tier and will be required to do more to protect their users by taking further measures to stop those attacks from taking place.

legislative requirements. The Security Industry Authority (SIA) is the relevant regulatory body, with an emphasis of education, before considering enforcement. The regulator will be responsible for providing supportive, high-quality advice and guidance aimed at raising knowledge and standards of protective security. The SIA sanctions will predominantly be civil action to address any non-compliance, escalating to criminal prosecution for the most serious cases.

‘The legislation places a duty on those responsible for certain premises or events to consider the risk of terrorism’

WILL ANY TRAINING BE PROVIDED?

The UK National Counter Terrorism Security Office (NaCTSO) and Home Office have designed a two-tier pathway of training and support:

WILL THIS NEW LEGISLATION BE SUBJECT OF REGULATION?

In short, yes. The government has said there will be a minimum of a two-year ‘lead in’ timeframe to allow businesses to become fully conversant and compliant with

1. An Ofqual-Certified, Level 3 Qualification: Accessible to anyone, with the working title of Competent Person in the Workplace (CPIW). This will be based on authoritative threat and mitigation guidance from official sources at NaCTSO and other partner organisations.

2. The Counter Terrorism Security Specialists Register (CTSSR): A register of verified counter terrorism protective security specialists. This will provide businesses and consumers with a verified list of CT protective security

and preparedness specialist advisors.

Further information about training will be publicised this year.

WHAT SUPPORT CAN COLMORE BID PROVIDE?

Colmore BID is well positioned in supporting our businesses with the new legislation. I manage the counter terrorism workstream, and I am a retired police officer with 12 years’ experience of counter terrorism policing. During my tenure, I was ‘hands on’ for some of the UK’s most notorious terrorism investigations, receiving many decorations for my service. In my time with Colmore BID, I have become a member of the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Advisory Group and the Birmingham ‘Prepare & Protect’ Working Group. Both groups provide the very latest updates, guidance and consultations on counter terrorism conversations. As the details of the legislation develop, I will provide regular updates via our website and marketing channels, as well as hosting a range of upskilling sessions to support levy payers. Should you wish to hear more details about the support Colmore BID can offer, please contact me on paul.street@ colmorebid.co.uk

For over 50 years, the New Market Street based catering and delivery business have been supplying Birmingham’s Business District.

We caught up with Alex, one of the Directors at Bon Bon, to find out more

TELL US A LITTLE MORE ABOUT BON BON. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START AND OPEN YOUR BUSINESS?

There has been a shop called Bon Bon in New Market Street for over 60 years! John (Wilson) and his business partner David (Lawlor) first purchased the shop in 2007, and then I became joint owner after David retired. I personally first started working at Bon Bon even before the pair, back in 2004!

WHAT MAKES BON BON SPECIAL?

We like to think that people come to us not just for our food – which we believe offers great value – but also because we’re a small, family-owned business that genuinely cares about our customers. We always try to go the extra mile and get to know everyone on a personal level.

We will always try and remember your name, and if we don’t know your name, we’ll almost certainly recognise you by your regular order! I was walking around Birmingham with my wife a few weeks ago, pointing out people who visit our shop: “He comes in for a Chicken Tikka Salad Box with extra jalapenos,” or “they get a cheese salad with extra beetroot on brown bread!”

It might sound silly, but everyone’s order is ingrained in my memory. I like to think that this sense of familiarity and personal connection is one of the reasons our customers enjoy coming to see us.

50 YEARS IN BUSINESS IS A REAL ACHIEVEMENT. HOW HAS COLMORE BUSINESS DISTRICT AND BIRMINGHAM CITY CENTRE CHANGED IN THAT TIME?

The new buildings all look fantastic, and the renovations we see when visiting other offices are equally impressive and modern. What stands out to us is that the spirit and personality of the people we meet around town, and those we chat with, remain unchanged. They are just as friendly and supportive as they have always been.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOU’VE FACED AND OVERCOME IN RECENT YEARS?

Like many in the hospitality industry, we found the Covid period incredibly difficult. Our business had been building momentum, but almost overnight, all of that progress was wiped out. It took us a couple of years post 2020 to rebuild, and we’re hopeful we’ve come through the worst of it. We cannot thank our loyal customers, and the new ones we’ve met since, enough. Their continued support has meant the world to us and played a huge part in helping us get through those tough years and move forward.

WHAT’S BEEN YOUR PERSONAL HIGHLIGHT OVER 20 YEARS IN BUSINESS?

Personally, my journey with Bon Bon has been a meaningful one. I first started working here when I arrived in England and then, 20 years later, I had the opportunity to return and join John, my business partner, who has looked after me over the years. It was a pleasure and an opportunity I didn’t hesitate to take. Now, owning and running alongside

someone who has given me so much is incredibly rewarding. I’m also deeply grateful to the business itself, which has played such a significant role in my life.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR MOST POPULAR MENU ITEMS?

As summer comes around, our salad boxes are proving very popular at the moment! Our paninis are also very popular across the year, as are our jacket potatoes - and our breakfast sandwiches are always in demand!

I think the most popular order is probably the Piri Piri Panini or the Chicken Tikka Panini – but people have their unique favourites, so it is hard to say what is most popular!

HOW HAS THE LOCAL COMMUNITY AND BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT SUPPORTED YOU?

As I mentioned earlier, our customers support us wholeheartedly, regularly choosing us for their breakfasts and corporate lunches. Colmore BID does a lot to support not just us, but the entire community – by raising the profile of the area and helping to make it a vibrant and welcoming place to do business!

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR BON BON?

We hope Bon Bon will continue to go from strength to strength, and continue to provide a good service to our customers. One of our goals is to grow our corporate buffet business, which has been increasing in popularity.

Above all, our priority is to keep our customers happy in any way we can, while nurturing the relationships we’ve built over the years. Bon Bon has proudly been part of New Market Street for 60 years. In that time, we’ve had the pleasure of meeting thousands of amazing people and have probably served close to a million sandwiches! We’re committed to being here for many more years to come, continuing to service the people of Birmingham and Colmore Business District.

Livery Street subway looking good!

We’re making exciting progress on our latest public realm project at Livery Street Subway.

The long-awaiting transformation is now underway and will see beautiful ceramic tiles, designed by artist Adam Nathanial Furman, decorate the subway walls.

Once completed, the subway will be transformed with colour and vibrancy, addressing years of maintenance issues and enhancing the connectivity between

the Colmore and Jewellery Quarter Districts.

Over £120,000 has been invested in this project. The majority of funds have been provided by Colmore BID, with additional funds provided by Jewellery Quarter BID and Moda Living. This project is kindly supported by Birmingham City Council.

Keep your eyes peeled on Colmore BID’s social media channels to see the final transformation!

Bright Brum!

From reflecting on Birmingham Light Festival to achieving World Craft City Status and launching an alternative tourist itinerary – it’s been all go these last couple of months.

Let me touch first on the inaugural Birmingham Light Festival (BLF) which I had the pleasure of developing and leading as City Curator and Festival Director. We have now completed the festival evaluation and it’s so clear in the data that the event delivered in a big way for the city.

Birmingham Light Festival united the city-centre BIDs, secured funding from such a diverse array of supporters and delivered an inaugural festival that 99% of audiences want to see return in 2026. I’m particularly proud of the fact that city centre footfall increased by 71% during the festival and that 60% of our audience spent in hospitality businesses during their visit.

We know there is a creative and community building case for events like Birmingham Light Festival but with so many of our hospitality businesses on their knees at the moment, that positive impact on the economy has never been more important.

NEWS FROM THE CITY CURATOR

and civic pride & tourism.

Joe, alongside the teams at North One and Sky, have served up this fun, authentic and heartwarming new series for us all to watch and I wanted to find a way to create a positive legacy for the city. So, to help fans of the show explore the city, we’ve developed the official United States of Birmingham Itinerary: 10 Things You Need To Do In Birmingham UK. It is the ultimate ‘alternative’ city itinerary for visitors, particularly fans of the show (and a really great fun day out for Brummies too for that matter).

Work has already begun to ensure this festival returns in 2026 but there are a few other projects I want to share too...

It’s no secret that film and TV can be incredibly powerful in telling a city’s stories and driving tourism. Visit Britain’s screen tourism research tells us that 9-out-of-10 potential visitors to the UK would be keen to visit film and TV locations during a trip. I think we, as a city, need to get much better at claiming and maximising our screen connections and when I heard about Joe Lycett’s United States of Birmingham TV series it prompted me to think even more about the relationship between TV & film

We launched it with Visit Birmingham last month and at the point of writing this the promotional film we created about it had already hit 100K views. Head over to the Visit Birmingham website to find out more and watch this space for a few more related surprises. The final piece of news (hot off the press) is something that I am genuinely thrilled about. Birmingham has achieved World Craft City Status for Jewellery & Allied Trades. We are joining a very elite group of cities with this international status, there are only 8 World Craft Cities in Europe! It’s been a pleasure to support the judging process and I believe the city is utterly deserving of this globally recognised mark of distinction. Off the back of this huge achievement, I am incredibly excited to be working with colleagues in the Jewellery Quarter Development Trust and beyond to establish the Birmingham Jewellery Biennial, set to become the UK’s festival of jewellery. I’ll look forward to sharing more on this in due course.

Take a look at my City Curator blog over on the Colmore BID website for all my latest musings and projects.

District News

the Birmingham energy community INTRODUCING

Colmore BID is committed to helping the business community to run on low-cost, clean power. Find out how you can get involved

Colmore Business District is at the heart of a city with enormous, untapped potential.

That potential relates to the energy we can obtain from the rich resources of the sun, wind and waste streams available to us.

Why then, when the technologies that can unleash this power to the benefit of our society have been available and affordable for decades, do we still rely so heavily on burning fossil fuels and nuclear power stations, sometimes hundreds of miles away?

Why, if you fly over our city, do you see so many roofs without a single solar panel installed?

The answer lies in the lack of a business model that is equitable for all participants. To put it another way, a business proposition is only as strong as its weakest link.

Colmore BID is committed to helping our business community to run sustainably on low-cost, clean power, in a way that benefits our society as a whole. This is why we’ve established a partnering arrangement with a company called ConsensusPower.

Their key people have a long history in providing affordable, clean power to low-income households: 12,000 rooftops (mostly social housing), at the last count. Most impressive was the fact it was all funded in a commercially-viable way.

Imagine a table, and sitting around it are all the market participants:

the landlord, tenant, solar installer, service-provider, investor, local councilor and any member of the local community.

Typical business models today provide most of the financial rewards to the party funding the project, as in “money makes money”. In contrast, the Birmingham Energy Community works on the principle that each party’s rewards are proportionate and equitable, based on their respective inputs and their stake in the community.

We spoke with Iain France of ConsensusPower, to tell us more.

WHAT IS THE BIRMINGHAM ENERGY COMMUNITY?

We install solar panels on as many viable, commercial rooftops as possible across the city.

The installations are fully funded, so no capital cost is required from the landlord.

All the technical and commercial work needed, including surveys, planning permission and grid connections, are completed by us, at our risk.

Landlords receive a payment for every kWh of power consumed within their buildings. So, they receive an income for the lifetime of the assets, with no risk and no up-front cost.

They also benefit from an improved EPC rating, increased asset value and a better experience for their tenants. Building occupants benefit from low-cost, clean power from their rooftops.

A key innovation is peer to peer

(P2P), which means that overspill power can be transacted between buildings within the city. This reduces costs considerably, compared with the conventional power trading model.

It also enables commercial ‘out-oftown’ renewable generators to top up the power supply. Businesses can enjoy low-cost, locally-produced, clean power even if their rooftops are not suitable for solar.

Importantly, P2P utilises the existing grid infrastructure. Tenants just need to switch from their existing electricity supplier to ConsensusPower at the end of their contract.

For every MWh of power traded within the Birmingham Energy Community, ConsensusPower will donate £2 to local charities for the lifetime of the project, which could be up to 40 years.

Local businesses benefit from keeping more of the economic activity relating to the production and consumption of energy within the city.

All assets are first offered for investment to the people of Birmingham via crowdfunding, meaning that financial surpluses are retained within the community.

WHY SHOULD I PARTICIPATE?

Multiple benefits to building owners: • No risk – studies completed at no cost to you

Philip Singleton of Colmore BID
Iain France of ConsensusPower

• Long-term income with no capital cost

• Increased asset value and EPC rating

• Improved tenant experience

• Supports your ESG goals

• Helps your local community Tenants simply gain access to low-cost, locally-produced, clean power.

HOW CAN I PARTICIPATE?

Landlord: Have rooftop solar installed (at no cost to you).

Tenant: Purchase low-cost, clean power from your rooftop. Switch your import supply to ConsensusPower, so all your power is supplied from the Birmingham Energy Community.

WHAT NEXT?

Whether you’re a landlord or a tenant, all you need to do is to jump onto our website (https:// consensuspower.com/localauthorities/colmore-bid) and submit an Expression of Interest (please see QR code below). There is no cost to you, nor any obligation whatsoever. Someone from the ConsensusPower team will be in touch to see if we can help.

How are you coping?

Stress is everywhere – political unrest, financial uncertainty, job pressure, and personal challenges. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, pause and ask yourself: How am I coping? Even if life feels steady, it’s worth exploring how to better care for your mind and body. You don’t need to be in crisis to seek support. Just as we exercise to stay physically strong, tending to our mental and emotional well-being helps us thrive. Chronic stress can contribute to burnout, insomnia, and even mental health conditions like ADHD and OCD. But the good news? You can prevent or ease these effects with mindful care.

WHY STRESS FEELS SO INTENSE

When we sense danger, our emotional brain kicks in, triggering a fight-flight-freeze response. This ancient system is often overactive in modern life, leading to:

• Elevated stress hormones (adrenaline, cortisol)

• Rapid heart rate and shallow breathing

• Weakened immune and digestive function

• Sugar cravings and binge eating

Stress isn’t always about the situation – it’s about how we perceive it. One person may love city noise, another might panic. Becoming aware of your personal stress triggers can help you shift how you respond.

A SIMPLE RESET

To feel calm and think clearly, your body needs to feel safe. Try this quick grounding technique:

1. Place one hand on your heart, the other on your face.

2. Recall something funny or heartwarming.

3. Notice your breath and how your body responds.

4. If your hands feel cold, rub them together and gently cup your eyes.

Small, intentional practices like this help regulate your nervous system and bring you back to centre.

READY TO RESET?

If you’re feeling stretched thin – or simply curious about how to support yourself more intentionally –consider this your invitation to explore rest, nervous system regulation, and self-awareness. Therapy can be a powerful way to restore clarity and calm.

Let’s reset, together.

THE 7 TYPES OF REST

True rest goes beyond sleep. These seven types of rest each serve a unique role in restoring your energy:

• Physical Rest: Sleep, napping, yoga, stretching, massage

• Mental Rest: Take breaks, pause between tasks, write down looping thoughts

• Sensory Rest: Limit screen time, reduce noise and visual clutter

• Creative Rest: Reconnect with beauty, nature, art, or music

• Emotional Rest: Let yourself feel – without filtering or performing

• Social Rest: Spend time with people who replenish you

• Spiritual Rest: Reflect, meditate, or connect to a sense of meaning

Even adding one or two of these to your weekly routine can make a big difference.

US WHAT A DAY IN THE LIFE AT

COLMORE BID LOOKS LIKE FOR YOU

Hi there! I’m the Communications Manager at Colmore BID, which means I’m responsible for looking after Colmore BID’s online content, our printed publications, social media channels, strategic partnerships and all our activity in the press.

A key part of my role involves meeting business members across our community and sharing more about the work of Colmore BID to build long-lasting relationships and provide direct support to our businesses to address their needs.

I also deliver activity through our Place Marketing Working Group, which aims to promotes the area and city to attract investors and visitors. Essentially, my role is all about raising awareness for Colmore Business District in the city core and beyond.

By working in comms, I get to play a part in all the projects we deliver across our Working Group areas. From writing a press release to announce our food and drink traders at Colmore Food Festival, getting our team on the TV and radio, to developing guidance campaigns around safety and security, the role really has it all.

I often call myself a ‘professional yapper’, so from speaking with our levy paying businesses, liaising with the press and influencers, and working with city partners, my favourite part of the role is collaborating with key partners to bring even more activity and vibrancy to Birmingham.

A typical day (if one of those exists!) starts by checking the local news agenda and jumping on social media to create and share content for our audiences. Then I’ll be catching up with our levy payers over coffee, looking at how we can work together to promote their services and activity to the local community.

Away from the desk, you’ll see me around the District meeting businesses, filming videos and hosting some of our fantastic events.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR ROLE?

Relationships are a huge part of my role, so I absolutely love meeting new people as well as staying in touch with existing connections.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO IN 2025?

The breadth of projects and activity we deliver means it’s such a dynamic organisation to work for. Personally, I’m excited to seeing the city buzzing in the first weekend in July – where Colmore Food Festival 2025, Black Sabbath’s reunion gig, Birmingham Disability Festival and Music for Youth’s National Music Festival all take place. The transformation of Livery Street subway, our latest and very exciting public realm project, is due for completion, and I can’t wait to see how it will brighten this key city-link. Most of all, I look forward to meeting even more of our levy paying businesses and understanding how we can support them in their Birmingham ambitions.

If you’re a local business and want to know more, I’d love to chat! Get in touch with me by emailing Heather.Woodhouse @colmorebid.co.uk

Excitement mounts for city-wide bulls art trail

COLMORE BID PROUD TO BE SPONSORING FAMILY ATTRACTION

We are excited to reveal that Colmore Business District (BID) is a proud sponsor of the Bulls in the City art trail coming to the city this summer, all in support of Birmingham Hospice.

As part of our commitment in supporting local arts and community initiatives, we have sponsored two magnificent bull sculptures that will be showcased in city-centre locations from 16 July – 14 September 2025.

Colmore BID has sponsored a large bull sculpture that will form part of the city-wide art trail, based on the iconic Bullring bull.

In addition, the team is delighted to also be sponsoring a small bull sculpture for St John’s and St Peter’s C of E School in Ladywood. This initiative aims to inspire and engage young minds as children design and decorate the smaller sculpture for display in a shop window around Colmore Row.

Bulls in the City, in partnership with renowned art trail producers Wild in Art, will bring together artists, businesses and the community to create stunning public art displays. The trail will feature bulls in various locations throughout Birmingham, each uniquely designed by local artists. Visitors can explore the trail from the 16 July to 14 September 2025 and discover the stories behind each sculpture.

At the end of the trail, all sculptures will be auctioned off to raise as much money as possible for Birmingham Hospice, a local charity which provides expert palliative and end of life care to people living with a terminal diagnosis.

Nicola Fleet-Milne, Chair of the Colmore BID Board said: “At Colmore BID, we are passionate about supporting initiatives that enhance the cultural landscape of Birmingham. We personally love the Birmingham bull and we were so excited to participate in this initiative which aligns perfectly with our organisation’s mission to promote creativity, community engagement and economic growth in Birmingham.

We know that art has the power to transform spaces, inspire individuals and strengthen communities. Through our sponsorship, we

hope to contribute to the cultural vibrancy of Birmingham and support the incredible artists who bring these sculptures to life.”

Rebecca Richards, Bulls in the City Project Lead, said: “We’re thrilled to have Colmore BID join our herd. Due to the cost of care increasing rapidly, it’s more important than ever we raise vital funds and awareness for Birmingham Hospice,” she said. “Bulls in the City will be fantastic for our charity, but it’s also a great opportunity for local businesses to get involved in what is set to be the biggest and best art trail our city has ever seen!”

Save the date... Birmingham Heritage Week returns for 2025

A popular annual city heritage week is set to return in 2025 with the support of Birmingham Museums Trust, University of Birmingham and the National Trust, alongside the Birmingham Municipal Charity and the William A Cadbury Charitable Trust.

Birmingham Heritage Week, now in its 11th year, previously faced an uncertain future following the loss of financial support due to the city council’s cuts to funding for culture projects and arts development.

The city-wide festival will be held between 12 to 21 September 2025, when visitors will have the opportunity to explore some of Birmingham’s most important industrial and cultural heritage buildings and unique outdoor spaces.

Over 10 days, activities will be taking place across Birmingham, with over a hundred different events, walks

and tours to choose from, many of these in Colmore Business District.

The festival organisers are currently inviting submissions from organisations interested in taking part in this celebration of industrial and cultural heritage by planning an event or activity for Birmingham Heritage Week.

Sara Wajid and Zak Mensah, CoChief Executives, at Birmingham Museums Trust, said: “We are delighted that Birmingham Museums Trust, the University of Birmingham, National Trust, Birmingham Municipal Charity and the William A Cadbury Trust are collectively supporting Birmingham Heritage Week this year.

“The festival will celebrate and showcase the city’s rich history and culture, raising awareness of the importance of preserving and promoting local heritage and what it means to Birmingham’s diverse communities.”

Highlights from the 2024 festival included a stunning Arts & Crafts house in Harborne, The Council House, The Exchange, Highbury Hall, Handsworth Old Town Hall, Tudor Merchant’s House and Old Grammar School, both in Kings Norton, and many more.
