Taoiseach opens new school extension building in Templeogue An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar officially opened the new school building in Bishop Galvin National School and Bishop Shanahan National School. The new two-story extension replaces the old prefab and links the two schools together. This extension provides for eight new classrooms and five resource rooms with the very latest in technology including interactive boards, along with new furniture, which will allow for more group work and station teaching. The new classrooms are bright, colourful and spacious and will be of massive benefit to the children who attend the school. This building work is a testament to the drive and commitment of the management and staff of both schools who put a significant amount work in to ensuring the best for their pupils.

Hellfire club development update

Dublin South West backs a Yes vote by 74.9% The constituency of Dublin South West returned the 6th highest yes vote in the country with 74.9% of people voting yes in the most recent referendum on the 8th Amendment.Tallys taken at the count centre indicate that around 71% of the people who voted in the Bishop Shanahan polling station voted in favour of the referendum. Minister Harris is committed to working as efficiently as possible to progress legislation through the Dáil. Clinical guidelines and the regulation of medicines must also be worked on over the coming months in preparation for the resumption of the Dáil after the summer holidays.

South Dublin County Council’s application for the development of the Hellfire site is currently with An Bord Pleanála. This development has been strongly opposed by local interest groups. An Bord Pleanála has requested that the council provide a bird survey to establish the impact the visitor centre would have on the local bird population. Having regard to the nesting season during the summer months, the closing date to the Council to submit this information is the 30th September 2018. Colm continues to oppose this project as the size and scale of the proposals will have a negative impact on the area.

Medical Cards for Children in Receipt of Domiciliary Care Allowance Children in receipt of Domiciliary Care Allowance (DCA) are now automatically entitled to a Medical Card. This has been a cause close to many people and has been a priority of this Government. If you receive DCA but do not currently hold a Medical Card or GP Only Card, you can register your child for the scheme either online or by paper application. If your child is already receiving DCA and has a Medical Card, then you do not have to register. If your child is in receipt of DCA and has a GP Visit Card, this will automatically be upgraded to a full Medical Card.

Work finally being completed on Wellington Roundabout ‘upgrade’ works The Council’s work on the Wellington Roundabout has been left uncompleted for far too long. This work should never have been commenced. It is a shocking waste of money as the last Wellington Roundabout update was designed to be long lasting. The original proposal for this new upgrade was to spend €100k. This was halved but still remains too high. This money could have been spent on footpath repairs or improvements of public spaces. South Dublin County Council offers no credible excuse for the length of time this has taken for the works to be completed. The disruption to both local residents and road users is inexcusable.

Extra Free Pre School Year The ECCE free preschool year has now been extended. All children over 3 years of age can now avail of 2 years free preschool education. Changes have also been made to the entry points into the preschool year with enrolments taking place in January and September. See www.dcya.ie/ecce for more information.

Templeogue Village planned upgrade South Dublin County Council plans to make a number of improvements to the lay out of the footpaths in Templeogue Village. Templeogue Village is a busy hub of shops, restaurants, medical facilities, the tennis club and small local businesses. It is very important that the infrastructure is put in place to maintain and enhance the experience of residents and visitors to the village while also preserving the integrity of what is an area of historical interest.

Colm Brophy T.D. with Senator Alice Mary Higgins and Ms Eilís Ní Chaithnía from the National Woman’s Council of Ireland at the launch of the Gender Budgeting report.

Future Budgets should be Gender Proofed The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Budgetary Oversight, of which I am Chairman recently launched a report on Gender Budgeting. Ireland should place gender-equality goals at the heart of its spending and taxation plans and Government departments should develop diligently researched goals for promoting opportunities for women.
