Adapt from Collins for Science
“Students are having to think about the answers: it’s not just a memory exercise; they have to reflect on whether the response will be accepted, and if not, why not… Collins Adapt shifts the focus away from speed, and doing as many questions as possible, to taking your time, and getting it right. One of the biggest issues across the school is resilience and grit, and getting them to engage and persevere beyond the ‘I don’t get it’.” Rob Morse, Assistant Headteacher and Science teacher, St James Exeter School
Adapt for teachers ● Focus your time where it will have most impact – each student’s responses and confidence in their learning is
captured, giving you a deep understanding of where they need extra support ● The platform delivers sophisticated learning data, building comprehensive reporting for whole classes and
year groups as well as diagnostic feedback allowing targeted intervention ● Quickly understand and view progress for your whole class accessed through a teacher dashboard, with the
functionality to create your own analytics – making the data work for you

effects of drugs on cells and organisms. Researchers need to understand how well drugs diffuse in and out of cells as this affects how well they work as medicines. This research is a hugely important step in the process of licensing medicines for human use.
KS2 Microbiologists study microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses and fungi. Some study diseases caused by microbes while others study how we can use microbes to help us. They work all around the world studying how microbes help us in medicine and food production.

Zoologists study animals, their behaviour and their interactions with their surroundings. This allows us to understand how animals are adapted to their environment, which is key to wildlife conservation. This helps us to learn how organisms have adapted to their environment. Some zoologists work in the outdoors, all over the world, whereas others work in a laboratory or a zoo.
Organelles are parts of cells that have specific functions (jobs).

We recommend that Part A topics are taught before Part B topics. The table shows how the content progresses.
PROGRESSION MAPPING
Part A topics building on prior learning from Key Stage 2
Part B topics building on ideas developed in Part A
1.1 Organisation of multicellular organisms
1.5 Specialised cells
the hierarchical organisation of multicellular organisms: from cells to tissues to organs to systems to organisms the functions of the cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, vacuole, mitochondria and chloroplasts
This topic progresses from Key Stage 2 by developing ideas learned about whole organisms and some organ systems, such as the circulatory system, to provide the bigger picture of organisation to cellular level. 1.2 Comparing plant and animal cells
the similarities and differences between plant and animal cells
This topic progresses from Key Stage 2 where students explored common features of plants, animals and microorganisms. These similarities and differences are now studied at cellular level.
KEY STAGE 2
the functions of the cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, vacuole, mitochondria and chloroplasts
identify and name the main parts of the human circulatory system, and describe the functions of the heart, blood vessels and blood
1.6 Movement in and out of cells: diffusion
KEY STAGE 4
Animal and plant cells
Cells and organisation Cell specialisation
the role of diffusion in the movement of materials in and between cells describe how living things are classified into broad groups according to common observable characteristics and based on similarities and differences, including microorganisms, plants and animals
This topic builds on 1.2 and 1.4 by explaining how substances are transported in and out of cells and unicellular organisms. Calculations of surface area-tovolume ratio and its implications are introduced.
1.3 Studying cells
KEY STAGE 3
identify that humans and some other animals have skeletons and muscles for support, protection and movement
This topic builds on 1.1 and 1.2 by developing ideas of typical cells. Examples of cells adapted for specific purposes are covered and students apply knowledge and understanding of the functions of cell parts and organelles. This topic builds on 1.3 by using those skills to identify more diverse and specialised cells.
Cells and organisation
cells as the fundamental unit of living organisms, including how to observe, interpret and record cell structure using a light microscope
Progression mapping and sequence rationales at the start of each unit shows how content fits into the wider learning journey
Microscopy
This topic progresses from Key Stage 2 by observing and comparing the building blocks of plants and animals that students have learned to observe and classify previously as entire organisms.
describe the simple functions of the basic parts of the digestive system in humans
1.4 Unicellular organisms
the structural adaptations of some unicellular organisms
Identify how animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment in different ways and that adaptation may lead to evolution
This topic progresses from Key Stage 2 where students learned that microorganisms are classified separately from plants and animals. Students learn about the cellular structure of microorganisms and relate structure to function.
