On the hunt for inspiration or new ideas? Take a look at these handy little excerpts from some of our favourite resources… From Music Express Online (see pages 10–11) ‘Old Macdonald had a glock’ is a simple skill builder for children age 5+ that can be used to teach pitch. How many instruments can you use to play this song? Perhaps you could perform it for another class!

Show children a glockenspiel (the name means ‘bells play’ in German, which describes its sound very well). Sing the song ‘Old MacDonald’ to the new words, pointing out that the traditional EI EI O, has been replaced with note names E E D D C. Ask the children to play the E-E-D-D-C notes every time they appear plus the repeated C notes for ‘with a C C here ... ‘

From Bobby Shaftoe, clap your hands (see page 20) This warm-up to the tune of ‘Ten green bottles’ can be adapted for simple percussion and actions. Children will love making up new verses to this rhyme, which is all about keeping your playground tidy!

From Tom Thumb’s Musical Maths (see page 26) Encourage children to recognise circles with this active song to the tune of ‘Round and round the garden like a teddy bear’.

11/10/2017 16:36

From Music Express Online (see pages 10–11) ‘Can you dance’ is a physical warm-up for children aged 7–9 that will get the whole class singing and moving!

Ask children to chant the responses and invent the appropriate actions! Once the warm-up is familiar, invite a child to lead. Perhaps they could invent more dance rhyme lines?

From Inspire Your Choir (see page 23) Have a read of this excellent advice for new conductors – or even experienced ones!

Idea 81

First steps as a conductor “I inherited this position as there wasn’t anyone else willing to at the time, but I’m not sure I’m any good.” If taking the helm and conducting a choir is new to you, relax and follow these steps. It doesn’t have to be daunting or stressful.

Top tip Get to know the voices in your choir and hold some voice assessments. Develop a member profile with details, range information, vocal strengths and targets for the future.

Bonus idea If you are joining an existing choir, trying to make radical changes too quickly is a bad idea. In your first few terms, you should respect their traditions and focus on doing a great job.

Think about your targets and why you’re there. Who inspired you to do this? What did they do to inspire you? What do you want to try and do to improve this choir? How can you make a difference? Note these down and keep them for reference. Don’t let repertoire or technically challenging pieces scare you. There is no pressure to do anything too tricky, so start simply and set yourself achievable goals. Don’t apologise for your gestures and style – any conductor takes time to establish a style and character. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Give the task your all and learn from the mistakes you will inevitably make. Ask other conductors of nearby choirs if you can watch them work. Take note of what makes it easy for the singers to follow the conductor and what techniques you could adopt. If you have to pick up projects already planned, make sure you know exactly what is expected and devise a rehearsal schedule. If it feels overwhelming, think of ways to simplify things. Film yourself and assess what you like and dislike about your style and how you come across to singers.

“This was a huge hit in my class!” Children create their own symbols to represent sounds and create simple compositions. Age: 6+ Resources: A selection of different soundmakers; paper and crayons Demonstrate how to create some simple symbol cards to represent sounds on percussion, e.g. three vertical lines for tapping claves three times; a wavy line for shaking a tambourine and getting quieter; a swirl to show swirling a hand round the skin of a drum. Top tip

Play the sounds to the children, then ask if they can say which symbol card went with which sound. Encourage the children to explore the different soundmakers and find a sound for which they create their own symbol. Share some examples with the other children. Divide the class into small groups and ask each group to combine their individual sounds and symbols into a pattern or sequence. They perform their combined sequences to the rest of the class. Discuss with the children how they might alter their symbols to demonstrate loud and quiet (dynamics), hard and soft (timbre), long and short sounds (duration), and high and low (pitch) if using tuned percussion.

Encourage the children to use body sounds and found sounds as well as classroom instruments.

Taking it further... Ask children how they might show two or more instruments playing at the same time.

Bonus idea Groups create sequences, and then invite another group to interpret their graphic score.

Roald Dahl Musicals

MUSICALS

Looking for inspiration for your next school performance? Teachers love our ready-to-use packs which have been specially adapted to take all the hassle out of directing a musical. KS2 NMR

Gloriumptious musicals based on Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes. Each musical runs for approximately 40 minutes and offers: • 7-10 speaking parts • Any number of non-speaking parts • Singing chorus

• Piano/vocal score • Pull-out script • CD/CD-ROM including backing tracks and extra activities

Roald Dahl’s Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Roald Dahl’s Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf

On trial for her crimes, Goldilocks looks like the little innocent who’d give us her last sweetie. Could she really be the brazen crook who stole the porridge from under the snouts of the harmless Bears? The jury will decide (but who will have the last laugh?) Let the trial commence!

Mr Wolf thinks he’s a match for Little Red Riding Hood and her three little piggy pals. He snatches a lead on her and gobbles up Grandma – but his hair-raising antics will cost him his skin. And it’s sweet Little Red Riding Hood herself who has the ace up her sleeve.

Roald Dahl’s Jack and the Beanstalk

Roald Dahl’s Snow-White and the Seven Dwarfs

Jack and the friendly farm animals defy the Giant’s phenomenal sniffing powers and Jack’s mother’s murderous way with a vacuum cleaner to come out triumphantly rich – and squeaky clean.

Snow White cleverly schemes to scoop up the magic mirror in a dash for freedom and fortune, aided by seven ex-jockeys and the turncoat huntsman, leaving the meanest Queen – as ever – heartless.

Roald Dahl’s The Three Little Pigs

Roald Dahl’s Cinderella

Piggy No. 3 is in a tight corner: Wolf has gobbled up his neighbours and now he’s hammering at the door with sticks of dynamite in his hand. Who can Piggy call on for help? Sweet Miss Riding Hood, of course – the fearless wolf-slayer.

The story is going magically to plan for Cinderella – the Magic Fairy does her job, her dress is divine, the ball is everything she could wish for … and the Prince! What a catch! But when the royal temper frays and the heads begin to roll, shocked Cinders finds that her wishes are all washed up. Who will save her now?
