Collins International Foundation and Foundation Plus

Provide a firm foundation at early year stage in English, maths and science in preparation for primary education

Collins International Foundation and Foundation Plus is an early years programme for English, maths and science that can be used across two years leading up to the first year of full primary education.

The programme introduces young children to phonics and early literacy skills, maths concepts and skills and science content in an age-appropriate way through topic-based discovery and activity-based learning. It provides plenty of learning opportunities through games, active play and hands-on exploration.

Careful progression ensures children develop the skills they need to be ready for English, maths and science in their first year of primary. The materials in Foundation Plus build on what is covered in Foundation to ensure that all students will be fully prepared for the learning ahead no matter which programme or curriculum their school is following.

The underlying themes – common across English, maths and science – allow the courses to be used together so that children build on knowledge, skills and vocabulary holistically. It can also be used alongside other courses to provide a comprehensive early years programme.

Developed in consultation with expert practitioners, the courses benefit from current thinking and best practice in early years education and have been informed by a wide range of curricula and frameworks used in international schools.

The whole-school primary maths programme that ensures confidence from the start!

Written by teachers for teachers to support the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework, Busy Ant Maths Foundation is packed with exciting activities to help build and develop skills needed to be successful in maths at primary.

The Foundation level consists of an Activity Book, Homework Guide, Teacher’s Guide and Collins Connect. A European edition is also available.

The Activity Book features lots of hands-on, highly visual activities with a low level of text to give pupils confidence in learning. In addition, it can be used as a ‘recording book’ to provide evidence of mastery of objectives or as a record of achievement.

The Homework Guide allows practice of the objectives covered in the daily lessons, and shared activities offer parents the chance to support their child’s learning.

The Teacher’s Guide suggests a Medium-Term Plan providing a recommended route through the content. A bank of flexible, dip-in resources enables teachers to cover all Maths aspects of the EYFS Framework. Each unit offers imaginative ideas for adult-led and child-led ‘Explore and play’ activities.

Deliver creative and engaging literacy lessons

Treasure House Foundation is a topic-based literacy resource for early years. It consists of mini-storytelling projects that focus on a core text along with a bank of activities. All the reading and writing early years outcomes are covered within the topics.

The bank of activities for each project is the vehicle for teaching speaking and listening skills, early reading skills (phonics), early writing skills and related reinforcement. There are lots of suggestions for incorporating more cross-curricular and creative activities within the topic.

The Workbook is phonicsbased and linked to the reading and writing EYFS goals. It can be used for early writing practice as well as to support teacher judgement of completion of EYFS goals and outcomes.

The Handwriting Resource Pack introduces children to the fine motor movements and pencil control that will be necessary for the formation of letters and patterns. It provides practice in moving from left to right, keeping within ‘tramlines’ and making up-anddown and curved movements.

14 collins.co.uk/international LITERACY

The Teacher’s Guide provides a framework for an educational and creative literacy programme with a storytelling focus for EYFS planning and teaching. The guide contains 18 story-led or poemled teaching sequences that interweave the main EYFS literacy areas of communication, reading, writing and phonics into interesting and fun activities for the children.

An engaging and child-centred Spanish course that makes learning Spanish fun

Developed to meet the requirements of primary school curriculums, introduces the Spanish language to children in a highly accessible format for beginners and young learners, with careful progression through the levels.

The Foundation Level, comprising a Pupil Book and Teacher’s Guide, offers an early introduction to Spanish for complete beginners or for children who have not yet developed reading and writing skills.

Focusing on developing listening and speaking skills through songs and games, it introduces very young learners to the basic vocabulary and phrases helping children to learn actively and absorb Spanish naturally in a communicative way.

As well as the step-by-step lesson plans, the Foundation Level Teacher’s Guide includes a wide range of photocopiable resources that can be used to reinforce or revise language at any point during the course. Some worksheets also provide an opportunity for pupils to start writing individual words thus developing their basic reading and writing skills.
