Write the Roman numeral in figures means write in numbers, for example, 76. Remember that C is 100, L is 50, X is 10, V is 5 and I is 1. Therefore, LXVI is 50 + 10 + 5 + 1 = 66. You also need to know that, if a letter for a smaller number is before a letter for a larger number, you have to subtract the smaller number from the larger number. Therefore:

IV is 5 – 1 = 4

IX is 10 – 1 = 9

XL is 50 – 10 = 40

XC is 100 – 10 = 90 b. The boxes show the ages of three people. Their age is written in Roman numerals. How old is each person? Write their ages in figures in the boxes. Maria

a. What number is 1000 more than 1250? b. What number is 1000 less than 5534? c. What number is 1000 more than 3894? d. What number is 1000 less than 9900?

Remember that more than in this kind of question means add. Therefore, 1000 more than 4273 is 4273 plus 1000. 1000 more than 4273 is 5273. 1000 more than 216 is 216 plus 1000. Therefore, 1000 more than 216 is 1216. Less than in this kind of question means subtract. Therefore, 1000 less than 3752 is 3752 minus 1000. 1000 less than 3752 is 2752.
