The suffix -ation is added to verbs to form nouns. The rules already learnt still apply. English Programme of Study: key stages 1 and 2. Appendix 1: Spelling p.50 A suffix is an ‘ending’, used at the end of one word to turn it into another word. Unlike root words, suffixes cannot stand on their own as a complete word. When pupils have finished the word, they should copy the noun into their tables. They should also write the verb it has been made from, taking care to spell it correctly. When pupils have completed the first word, hand out letter tiles for another word. Continue until the pupils have unscrambled all of the words. This activity can be differentiated by providing one or more letters at the start of the word to help children to get started with the word. These could be added to the noun and verb tables.

-ation identification Tell pupils you are going to carry on working with words ending –ation but remind them that as well as being able to spell the words, they need to know what they mean. Explain that you will read out a clue and the children have to write down the right word on their whiteboards.

Introduction of new learning •

Tell pupils you have some letter tiles that have become muddled up by mistake. Explain that they are going to work in pairs to reorganise the tiles to make nouns that end with the suffix –ation. Give each child a noun and verb table and the first set of tiles. Encourage pupils to work together to rearrange the letter tiles to spell a noun.

Read the following clue: This is facts or knowledge about something.

Write the word ‘inform’ in the centre of the whiteboard and circle it. Ask pupils to read the word out loud and to tell you what they think the word means. If necessary, clarify pupils’ understanding that the verb ‘inform’ means ‘to give facts or information’. Remind children that we can create new words by adding suffixes. Create a spider diagram by adding the words ‘informs’, ‘informed’, ‘informing’ and ‘informer’. Explain that the word ‘inform’ is a verb. Say that sometimes verbs can be changed into nouns by adding the suffix –ation. Remind pupils that a suffix is a group of letters you can add to the end of some words to turn them into nouns. Explain that today you will be learning about adding the suffix –ation to verbs to make nouns. Add the suffix –ation to the word ‘inform’ on the whiteboard. Ask pupils to read the word aloud. Write the word ‘adore’ on the board. Explain that ‘adore’ is also a verb, and ask for volunteers to give its definition. If necessary, clarify that the word means ‘to love or like very much’. Tell pupils you are going to turn ‘adore’ into a noun by adding the suffix –ation. Point out that the word ‘adore’ ends in –e, and ask children to explain what they need to do before they can add the suffix. Ensure they remember that they need to remove the ‘e’ before adding the suffix. Erase the letter ‘e’ from the word ‘adore’ on the whiteboard, and write in the suffix ‘ation’. Ask pupils to read out the new word. Repeat with the words ‘sense’, ‘prepare’, ‘relax’ and ‘admire’, asking pupils each time if it is necessary to change the spelling of the root word before adding the suffix.

Give pupils time to think about the word ‘information’ and to write it down. Check that they have spelled the word correctly. Repeat with other words.

Dictation Dictate the following sentence to your class.

The information on the website helped with the preparation for our assembly. Ask pupils to put their pencils down and listen carefully to the sentence. Read it twice and ask pupils to say it. Then ask them to write it down. Encourage them to check that what they have written matches the sentence they heard, and to check their spelling. Be sure to check that pupils have spelled the key words from the lesson correctly.

Other ideas Encourage pupils to play hangman in pairs using words from the session. Make word cards using the words from the activities. A pupil in each pair picks a word and writes a line on the whiteboard for each letter in the word. Their partner must guess the letters in the word before the hangman is complete!
