Chapter 1: Energy
Explain • The students should then come back together as a class to give their presentations. They should make notes on each of the different energy resources as the presentations are given.
Consolidate and apply • Watch video on energy resources in Costa Rica. Discuss why Costa Rica produces a far higher percentage of its electricity from renewable sources than Britain. [O1, O2, O3]
• Alternatively, have students complete each section of Worksheet 1.10. [O1, O2, O3] • Low demand: Guide students carefully through tasks. • Standard and high demand: Work independently or in pairs or small groups. Extend • Many people assume that solar energy is only worthwhile in very hot countries yet last year, in one day in the summer, Germany produced over 50% of its electricity using solar energy. Describe possible uses of solar energy in Britain. [O3]
Plenary suggestions Ideas hothouse: Ask students to work in pairs to list points about what they know about a particular idea from the lesson. Then ask the pairs to join together into fours and then six to eights to discuss this further and to come up with an agreed list of points. Ask one person from each group to report back to the class. Ask me a question: Ask students to write a question about something from the topic and then a mark scheme for the answer. Encourage them to come up with ones worth more than 1 or 2 marks and to try out their questions on one another.
