A message from your Parents’ Council Chair

Dear Collingwood Families, It is hard to believe we are nearing the end of another wonderful school year and getting prepared for a much deserved summer break! I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all, our amazing Collingwood families, for your support this past school year. Whether you volunteered at the Carnival, made a donation to the Fashion Show, or came out to play at Greens & Jeans, every little bit contributes to the incredible community spirit we are so privileged to enjoy at Collingwood. A big thank you to our exceptional Collingwood faculty and staff for their quiet, behind the scenes support. Every task that was asked of you was always carried out with a smile, even during the disruption of construction! My sincerest gratitude goes to our Parents’ Council Executive Committee and Co Chairs for their hard work, dedication, invaluable talent, and commitment to their respective posts. Our events and services wouldn’t have been such a success without you and your team of volunteers! We started off the year with the newly minted Collingwood Family & Friends Carnival. What a fabulous job our Ring Masters, Mirjana Popescu and Melissa Fiorvento, and their crew did in transforming Wentworth into an “Under the Big Top” extravaganza! Our beloved Festive Store was a hit once again for the Junior School, thanks to the many hours of shopping, wrapping, and “elf” management by Roya Arayee and Karin Cronk. Many thanks to Kelly Reinhardt and Lisa Stout for organizing the Scholastic Book Fair, providing our children, their teachers and the library with a plethora of great new books. Fashion Show brought the ladies together to enjoy fun fashions for kids, tweens/teens and adults. Thank you Heidi George and Pamela Smith for a fabulous night! Penny Wilson and Marissa Poratto got everyone in the Collingwood Cowboy spirit with our Greens & Jeans Golf, BBQ & Party. A fun day and night was had by all! The UniShop continues to thrive as the go to place for our families in need of extra uniform items. Thank you Hugette Khumalo for your meticulous organization of this service. Legacy teaches us all the benefits of recycling. Thanks to Nickole Kirstiuk and Pam Vidalin for running this important program. To our Class and Grade Rep Liaisons, Signy Ireland and Rosi Gill, thank you for supporting our Reps throughout the year. To Milena Litherland, Secretary, Milyana Petruchak, Treasurer and Shannon Bosa Yacoub, Vice Chair, your behind the scenes support is immensely appreciated. The informative and engaging ParentLink newsletters are the product of Joanne Unsworth’s and Barbara Barry’s coordination and hard work. Our Wentworth Lunch Program would not be possible without Jimmy Yee. Jimmy, thank you for keeping those volunteers coming in to pack up and distribute school lunches and for searching out new sources of healthy, yet tasty, offerings. Christine Murray, thank you for making sure that Sports Day has the scores of parent volunteers necessary for a fun filled day. Next year, Collingwood will be celebrating its 30th year along with a beautiful new facility at Morven. It will surely be an amazing year to celebrate where we are today and Parents’ Council looks forward to providing many ways to come together and commemorate this major milestone! To the graduating class of 2014: May you enjoy much success, no matter where next year takes you and may you always have fond memories of your years at Collingwood. Lastly, to everyone, I wish you all a relaxing, safe and fabulous summer holiday! Sincerely, Monica Clemiss, Parents’ Council Chair

The UniShop UniShop Continues to Raise Funds and Recycle

The Collingwood UniShop was once again open for business throughout the year, assisting parents with uniform needs, recycling uniform items that might otherwise end up in a landfill, and raising money for the school. The used uniform program was launched by the Parents’ Council to “recycle” gently worn uniforms. Collection days and sales are scheduled four times a year. Prior to sale days, volunteers sort and display donated items in Junior, Middle and Senior school categories. All proceeds go to the school and more than $11,500 was raised in 2013-2014. In addition to sale days, inventory is stored in the Parents’ Council room in case of emergency. So, if a child is missing a critical uniform item, the UniShop can help! They will do their best to supply the required item to the child as quickly as possible. The UniShop team would like to thank the staff and and parent volunteers for their consistent support of the UniShop program. Special thanks to Collingwood staff including Viktor Dubovvy, Richard Lewis (RJ), Robert Sadian, Barb LaBounta, Carole Lewthwaite, Kevin Zweep, Kim Spicer and Shannon Grata. A big ‘thank-you’ also to those student volunteers who contributed to the success of the UniShop. The Parents’ Council also wishes to extend sincere thanks to Hugette Khumalo for leading the program for the past year. New volunteers are always welcome. To help with the UniShop, or for more information, please contact unishop@mycw.org. The UniShop would like to extend a huge thank you to Carousel Cleaners for their incredible generosity in the cleaning and bundling of over 800 uniform items that are now all ready to be shipped overseas to a school in need.

Summer Collection Uniform items can be dropped off at Wentworth reception June 16th-19th during regular school hours June 20th & June 23rd-25th, 9:00am-3:00pm Please note: NO DROP OFF AT MORVEN DUE TO CONSTRUCTION! Junior School students celebrate another successful year of recycling This year the Grade 5 Legacy Program was supervised by Nickole Kirstiuk and the Grade 5 teachers, parents and students. The Legacy Program manages the collection of recyclable items throughout the year and is a participant in the Encorp B.C. Elementary School Recycling Program. Encorp is a federally incorporated not-for-profit stewardship corporation, which develops programs to assist with recycling efforts in schools. Schools who achieve placement standing in the Encorp Program are awarded extra prize money. To date 73,689 containers have been collected and kept out of the landfill and $4,313.71 earned!! AND we are not done yet! There are more donations to be tallied, plus the chance of an additional prize (amount to be determined) to come from Encorp. Thank you to everyone who has made the effort to come and help out. Many hands make work light! It isn’t the most graceful job, which is why volunteer help is so appreciated. I would like to recognize Kristin McGinley for her continued support throughout the year as well as Avery Kirstiuk (grade 6) and Hudson Kirstiuk (grade 3) for being my Legacy assistants all year long!! Nickole Kirstiuk, Grade 5 Legacy

Thank you Legacy volunteers! Morven Recycling—another successful year!

The 2013–2014 year has been a success with more than $1600 made, and over 26,000 containers counted and kept out of the landfill. Thank you to all of the students who participated in the program, and the teachers Meg Chamberlin, Samantha Weiss & Katie Geale who were instrumental in assigning groups and times. Also huge thanks to Whistler Water for their continued generosity in donating all of their recycling and delivering from Grouse Mountain, as well as Kevin Zweep and the maintenance staff.

Due to the demolition of the Glenmore Wing, we will lose the little garage at the entrance of the staff parking, which currently houses the recycling and acts as a home base for sorting. Due to this change, Morven Campus will experience a hiatus in the recycling department. We look forward to finding a new location for this wonderful hands on project to continue in the 2015– 2016 year. With thanks to all involved… Pam Vidalin & Christine Ding

Thank You English Corner Volunteers

English Corner, an initiative where Chinese-speaking parents attend meetings and events with volunteers with the goal of improving their spoken English, has proven to be a new favourite among many of our Collingwood parents. What started as weekly coffee mornings at Hollyburn evolved into several hikes on the North Shore trails and various luncheon outings throughout the city. We look forward to continuing this wonderful new program for the rest of the school year which will include some fun new outings in addition to the Hollyburn get togethers.

Thank you to all the volunteers who have made English Corner a huge success. If you would like to volunteer at this fun weekly event, please contact Sylvia Tam: pcmulticultural@mycw.org. A message from the Class and Grade Rep Co-Ordinator 2013/2014 has been a great year and I would like to thank all of the Class and Grade Representatives for their invaluable support of Parents’ Council events and services and of course their respective classes/grades. As we approach the end of the school year, I would like to share with you our plan for 2014/2015. Parents’ Council will be amending the responsibilities of the Representatives to reflect the evolution of the culture of our school. The biggest and most welcome change will be the elimination of the collection of funds for the October Parent Socials and the contribution to PC events. JK–Grade 5 Reps will continue to collect and manage the funds for the in class treats and year-end teachers’ gifts. We feel that the primary responsibility of the Representatives should be Fun Raising and Community building. The Representatives are the Ambassadors for the school—the Front Line—and we could not do it without them.
