“Solution: (SMTP-SSL)Port is Disabled. Consult your system admin.”

The Problem From time to time I will get an odd error when setting up scanning to email on a Sharp copier that says: “(SMTP-SSL)Port is disabled. Consult your system admin.”

I’ll admit, this error had me puzzled the first few times I saw it, and I thought the problem was within the router, not in the Sharp printer. The first time I saw the error I worked around it and used an SMTP server that didn’t require SSL. Since those servers are becoming more and more difficult to find lately, I decided to figure out why this error was being generated by my copiers. The solution was simpler that I originally thought it would be. It was in an area of the web interface that we technicians don’t normally fumble around in, the security settings.

The Solution If you’re getting the “(SMTP-SSL)Port is disabled. Consult your system admin.” error, here is the quick fix. Before we get started you’ll need to know the Sharp copier’s IP address. I’ll assume you already know how to get into the web GUI if you’re setting up scan to email, but if you don’t know the IP address of the copier you can print a NIC page with this information on it. 1. From the Sharp’s IP accessed web interface first login as an administrator by clicking Login at the top right corner. The default administrator password is “admin” by default.
