The coastal town is as an increasingly popular tourist and residential town and is also famous for its penguin colony and the limestone architecture of the Victorian Precinct, which is located down by the harbour. This precinct is a busy hub filled with shops, galleries and plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants.

Oamaru is also the finishing point for the increasingly popular Alps 2 Ocean cycle trail which begins at Aoraki Mt Cook.
