It seemed like a long time coming but spring

has arrived in the Lowcountry. March saw several nice days in a row so we know things are looking up weather-wise. Despite the rainy, cold winter, we did manage to have a lot of activity, primarily inside the Clubhouses. Not only were there numerous Member activities, but the Staff was busy as well with their “to do” lists. The Halfway Café has had a major transformation and is scheduled to reopen early in April. Be sure to stop by the next time you’re at the Club.

A quick recap of 2009 showed an operating surplus for the second year in a row. Scott Jaccard and his Staff should be congratulated again for such outstanding performance despite a terrible economy. They provided this level of financial accomplishment while continuing to supply the outstanding service levels that we all enjoy.

Currently, under review by the Board is a policy regarding utilization of the Riverview Room in the Nicklaus Clubhouse. The space has been underutilized and there are occasions when this space could help to better meet the needs of the Membership. The policy under review will allow, at Management’s discretion, mixed-Member usage of the Riverview Room, with a plan to revert to the Men’s Grill as the Colleton community grows. An administrative policy is forthcoming.

At the annual Board retreat in February, the Board had an opportunity to assess the past year and plan for the year ahead. 2009 was challenging; however, we are pleased to have achieved a surplus when usage and real estate sales were both down. So far in 2010, we are showing very positive trends in both operations and home sales and plan to continue operating the Club in the same prudent manner as last year.

The spring major events started on March 25th with the Club Challenge, with both the Men’s and Ladies’ Member-Guest events to follow in April. The annual spring Member-Member is May 6 - 8. We hope your plans are to participate in these events as they are Colleton traditions you will enjoy. These events showcase the community and are perfect for bringing friends and associates.

Much of the Board discussion at the retreat focused on the results of the Feedback Sessions held in January. The summary report of the Feedback Sessions was communicated to the Membership via email in February. In short, a high percentage of Members expressed a desire to explore alternative memberships with the objectives of retaining Members, attracting new Members and utilizing surplus capacity of the golf courses. Ten of the leading Realtors in the area participated in a special session to provide feedback from a buyer or nonMember’s perspective. As a group they were supportive of an alternative offering. At the time of this writing, the Board is finalizing a proposal on alternative memberships that will be presented at the upcoming Town Hall Meeting, scheduled for Thursday, May 6 at 5:30pm at the Dye Clubhouse (followed by dinner at the Nicklaus Clubhouse). Speaking of traditions, the 4th of July celebration is one of Colleton’s finest. Not only does it celebrate our nation’s independence, it celebrates family and friends of all ages and walks of life. For our new Members, this is a fantastic way to become more acquainted with the Colleton community. I suggest you plan early as this event books quickly. If you need more information, call the Front Desk for assistance. And, don’t forget the parade. This is serious competition and the creativity will impress and entertain you.

With so many activities at the Club, I hope to have an opportunity to meet many of our new Members. I and all the Board of Directors look forward to getting to know you. And of course, our Staff is always here to assist you in any way.

E arlier this spring I attended a meeting

to learn more about the Hilton Head Airport master plan and thought this worthy to share a few highlights with the Membership as many of our residents are not here year round and may have missed local coverage of the story.

An airport that offers dependable service and selection of choice while servicing our primary “feeder markets” is critical to keeping our area vibrant and relevant.

¡ Together, the Hilton Head Town and County Councils have engaged the consulting services of Talbert and Bright for the purpose of updating the Hilton Head Airport’s twenty year master plan. ¡ The consultants concluded that the existing 4,300 foot runway must be lengthened by 1,100 feet to comply with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations. The last master plan, completed in 2001, came to comparatively the same conclusion regarding length.

John Ussery, with Gateway Realty, recently shared some encouraging news as far as real estate activity. There were 22 home sales in Colleton within the last 12 months and the median price of both homes sold, and those coming on the market, is gradually trending upward. The number of homesites on the market is down from the beginning of the year which, over time, will assist in stabilizing pricing. There are 5 pending lot sales at the time of this writing. As you will read in President Freed’s article, the Board is exploring alternative membership options to mitigate the excess number of homesites on the market and foster opportunities to attract new Members. An alternative membership option will be on the agenda at the upcoming Town Hall Meeting scheduled for May 6th.

The South Carolina Golf Course Ratings Panel’s latest ranking has significantly elevated the Dye’s standing up sixteen slots to #23. The Dye’s rankings went from # 31 in 2006 to # 39 in 2008. The Nicklaus course ranked #19 in 2008 and 2009 (up from #21 in 2006). For more detailed information on the SC Golf Course Ratings Panel, visit their website at www.scgolfpanel.org. Board Member Al Thiess heads a workgroup that hosts course rankers as they periodically visit Colleton to compile their criterion. Mr. Thiess recently hosted Golf Digest’s rankers and believes that Member involvement truly makes a difference when it comes to their final assessments. Thank you to Mr. Thiess and his group for taking time to make a difference!

After playing with the Montreal Jr. Canadiens, he started playing with the Montreal Canadiens in 1966. In 1968–69, his second full NHL season, he led the Canadiens to a second consecutive Stanley Cup win, becoming the first defenseman to win the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoffs' most valuable player. In seventeen seasons with the Canadiens, Savard played on eight Stanley Cup championship teams: 1968, 1969, 1971, 1973, 1976, 1977, 1978, and 1979. In 1979, he won the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for perseverance and dedication to the game. Savard played the last two seasons of his career with the Winnipeg Jets before retiring in 1983. Congratulation to Member Ron Wilson on his team’s outstanding performance at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. As head coach of the U.S. Men's Olympic Ice Hockey Team, Mr. Wilson was instrumental in bringing intensity to a historic hockey event. Although the outcome was not what we hoped for (unless you’re a Canadian), there is no disputing the battle for the gold medal in hockey was riveting. This is Mr. Wilson's second time coaching in the Olympics. He also led the 1998 U.S. Olympic Men's Team to a sixth place finish in Nagano, Japan. (That was the first Winter Games that featured participation by NHL players.) Mr. Wilson is currently the head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Colleton River Plantation, a private community in Bluffton, South Carolina continues its winning tradition with another accolade from GolfWeek magazine. This award is the latest of many honors earned by Colleton River, having recently been recognized in the Top 15 Residential Communities and retaining its Platinum Club status with Club Leaders Forum.

The residential ratings are derived directly from the annual list of Golfweek's Best Courses. Courses opened before 1960 are classified as Classic and after are considered Modern. According to Golfweek’s 2009-2010 Rater’s Handbook, courses are ranked by nearly 500 raters throughout the country, who judge on the basis of 10 evaluation criteria: routing; quality of shaping (for Modern courses); overall land plan, greens and surrounds, variety and memorability of par 3’s, variety and memorability of par 4’s; variety and memorability of par 5’s; tree and landscape management, conditioning; and, the “walk in the park” test. Rankings are calculated using a statistically rigorous process.

Colleton River Plantation sits on 1,500 acres of spectacular unspoiled land, has expansive lakes, sweeping vistas and is nestled at the confluence of the Colleton and Chechessee Rivers. On behalf of Member Peter Elder: The Membership Development Committee would like to thank everyone on the Staff for making the Valentine’s Day Gallery Party a spectacular success. The purpose of the Gallery event was to attract prospective buyers to our Plantation, giving us a chance to show the special character of our lifestyle.

We had determined that a showing of fifty people would constitute a success. We had two-hundred-fifty people who came to see the three exhibits in the Nicklaus Clubhouse, Pam and Andy Arway’s house and Dot Bryan’s house! One-hundred-fifty guests came from outside our gates.

The Committee would like to thank Pam, Andy and Dot as well as the Arts Council who helped with hosting in the three venues. And a special thanks to our Food & Beverage Staff as well as the Plantation Security Staff for managing the logistics.

Course Update The Nicklaus fairways have been a common topic of conversation over the past several years as the conditions have ranged from extremely good at times to, at best, disappointing. This article will provide insight on the current state of the fairways, how we arrived here, and the actions taking place now and in the future to maintain the playing standards expected at CRP. Our goal is simply to provide the Membership with the best playing conditions possible regardless of over-seed or paint.

Over the past three years, we have tried different approaches to achieving the best conditions on a year round basis on both the Nicklaus and the Dye—and we have learned much in the process. While the Dye course has reacted very well to not over-seeding, the Nicklaus course has not. Therefore, we have concluded that our future, intermediate term strategy is to over-seed the Nicklaus course on an annual basis, beginning this coming fall.

While over-seeding is the most dependable approach in providing outstanding playing conditions in the winter months, it does come with the risk that in certain years the late spring transition from over-seeded grass back to Bermuda is sometimes difficult and can lead up to a month of less than optimal fairway grass. In fact, the transition in late spring last year resulted in the need to close the Nicklaus course for three additional weeks to assist in its transition back to Bermuda.

As a result, our intermediate term efforts will be directed toward improving the fairways so that we can minimize any transition issues. As is more fully explained in this article, this will be accomplished through improving the grass we have and experimenting with other grasses as well.

Our goals remain the same—to provide our Members the best course conditions available in the area; conditions that will make Members and guests alike say wow!

Just the Facts:

Let’s first speak of the facts of what we know is certain. First, the “new” certified 419 Tifway Bermudagrass turf installed during course renovation in 2003 / 2004 has not performed at the desired level, especially in the winter months, in the two years we did not over-seed, nor in the 2009 transition when we did over-seed. Our variety of Bermudagrass has also thinned out each fall when the growing

season slows and Member traffic increases.

Secondly, the “older” (original) Bermudagrass “spots” have performed quite well in all of the aforementioned scenarios from over-seed to transition and thrived in areas of high traffic. Although it is slightly lighter green in color and has wider blades than the 419 grass, it has been very hardy and has now infested every fairway on the Nicklaus course.

This grass was sprayed during renovation in order to kill it, but it did not die entirely and continues to emerge throughout the course. Lastly, the Nicklaus course receives some of its water (up to 100,000 gallons per day) from Beaufort Jasper Water and Sewer Authority (BJWSA) and this is not treated by our sulfur burner (I will go into more detail later on the significance of what not treating the effluent water means to Colleton), while the rest of the Nicklaus water supply comes from runoff from drainage, several shallow wells, and a deep well on the property.

History: To fully grasp where we are, we must understand how we got here. As mentioned earlier, in 2003/2004 the Nicklaus course went through a renovation. This included not only redoing the grass on the greens and tees, but also the grass on the fairways and the entire irrigation system. The grass installed was the “new” certified Tifway 419 Bermudagrass from Tifton, Ga. I emphasized “new” because it was totally different from the “original” certified Tifway 419 Bermudagrass installed in the early 90’s on the Nicklaus course. Over the years, what was recognized as “certified” 419 changed.

A significant project completed prior to the renovation was one which allowed BJWSA to supply the Nicklaus golf course with effluent water. This required the installation of a water tank on the property (at the end of White Hall Drive) and a direct feedline into the pump station’s wet well (where the water is pumped out and onto the property). In the past, before adding effluent water to the mix, the well water and runoff drainage were adequately treated with a sulfur burner. Our well water is moderately high in bi-carbonates (2HCO3) which bind with helpful nutrients like calcium and magnesium in the soil therefore making them unavailable to the plant, but allowing sodium levels to build in the soil. This alone is not dramatic, but coupled with water that has almost no calcium and magnesium, such as is the case here, can be very detrimental. By treating the water with a sulfur burner we are able to reduce the amount of bi-carbonate inputs before it is pumped onto the turf. The effluent water has similar issues to the well water, being high in bi-carbonates, but because of the way our system is plumbed, the effluent water is not treated, so it is sent directly to the golf course. This has become more of an issue following the renovation with the newer grass as it has shown to be more sensitive to these challenges than the original grass. Typical signs

&RXUVH 8SGDWH of this type of water issue on courses include: sealing off of the soil and algae, thinning of turf, and more susceptibility to other injury. One approach to combat these issues is with an alternative way to treat the water—that being an acid injector. This process performs a similar reaction to the sulfur burner, but does so by injecting MCDS (Monocarbamide dihydrogen sulfate) in the outgoing water line from the pump station, thus treating all of the water before it reaches the grass.

for the “older” Bermudagrass that seems to thrive on our property. We have taken several plugs from their farm, along with plugs from our spots, and from the Borland course (which is all “old” Bermudagrass) and are growing these plugs in a makeshift “greenhouse” to confirm they are the same.

The Board has also approved the testing of alternative grasses to see how they perform on our property. The two grasses chosen are the older grass referred to above from Nimmer

Current and Imminent Actions for 2010: The overwhelming consensus of the Board is that we must take the steps that are most certain to result in outstanding playing conditions for the greatest part of our most important playing seasons. For this reason, Management and the Board have concluded we will be over-seeding the fairways on the Nicklaus course this fall and into the future until another viable approach is available. This will provide the most assurance of our commitment to have at least one course in tournament condition at almost all times and have both courses in the best condition possible for the greatest amount of time. This will allow our Members to schedule their fall plans accordingly. We have scheduled the 2010 over-seeding to take place in the third week of September to accommodate the fall tournament schedule as much as possible, while leaving three days of closure in the beginning of November for any touch up work that may be needed.

While the adoption of an over-seeding approach for the intermediate term ensures the conditions for the 2010/2011 winter, it does not address the future. For the future, we want to make certain that the risk of troublesome transition issues in late spring are minimized as much as possible. Our plans include exhaustive efforts to improve our existing “new” certified Bermuda as an acceptable surface for the Nicklaus course, but at the same time prepare for other avenues if it is found that this grass underperforms. Because of this, we have several different trials running simultaneously, both to test the existing grass and to consider optional grasses for the future if the 419 is found unacceptable.

First, we have taken one hole completely off effluent water. We have the ability to adjust when and where the effluent water and irrigation system will water, so we have set the system to not allow effluent on hole #11 greens or fairways on the Nicklaus course. Next, we have also increased water and soil testing from twice per year (which is slightly above average), to four times per year.

This is to insure there are no spikes and valleys in the water we receive from BJWSA and that the soil consistently has adequate nutrients for the grass. The Board has also approved the purchase and installation of an acid injector for the irrigation system. As previously mentioned, this will allow us to treat all the water being used on the property.

We are optimistic that these changes will help in the overall recovery of the grass, but we are also looking at alternative measures for the future. After speaking with one of the main turf farm distributors that Colleton River used in the mid-90s, we believe we have found a source

Turf and a new cultivar grass called Celebration. Celebration has gained in popularity in the last 3 to 5 years throughout the southeast due to its ability to transition from over-seed, shade tolerance, aggressiveness, and ability to thrive in low pH soils. There are several courses in the south, for example, Augusta National, East Lake and Callawassie that are now using Celebration on tees or the driving ranges and have reported good success. We have decided to install two test areas of each grass, side by side, on the landing areas of #1 and #14 fairways. We will be looking for the following specific traits: How do they do with traffic and shade? Do they transition with minimal disruption to play? Do they out-compete the other variety? The results will not be known until the end of spring of 2011, at the earliest. The areas will be large enough to provide good information and will provide solid testing, but small enough to remove in the future if the one of these or some other variety is chosen. Along with this project, we will try a sprigging and/or plugging machine on a small area on the course with each of these varieties. If these tests work as anticipated, it would be relatively inexpensive to change the grass over time in the summer and during the transition period with minimal disruption to play. These projects will take place in June of this year while the course is closed for aerification.

In conclusion, the decision on which approach we will use in the future will not be made overnight as we are not leaving any stone unturned to come to a decision. We will continue to update you on the progress of these trials, and we hope to be able to see firsthand how they are performing. We are working diligently to provide the best conditions possible in the short term and have put several practices in motion so that the Club can make the best educated decision for the future. As always, Management and the Board are committed to having Colleton River present the best playing conditions to our Members of any course in our area.

Did you know that Colleton River will be hosting the Regional Qualifier for the U.S. Open? The United States Golf Association makes an effort to conduct qualifiers for its National Championship on quality golf courses. With that being said, we are pleased to announce the qualifier for the U.S. Open Championship will be held at the Colleton River Dye Course on Monday, May 17, 2010. This event is part of our continuing

effort to share our exceptional golf courses with the golfing community and to provide exposure to our wonderful facilities. We anticipate a field size of 100 players and we welcome you as spectators to show your support and enthusiasm for the game. In addition to this event, we will be hosting the U.S. Amateur Qualifier in July and the South Carolina State Amateur in August of 2011.

The ladies will play four 9-hole rounds over two days with changing formats each nine. Practice rounds will be held on Wednesday followed by an evening cocktail party. Thursday and Friday will be the tournament rounds. Please join us for this great ladies’ golf event in the spring!

The format for this Men’s Member-Guest will be a 36-hole, Stroke Play, Better-Ball of Partners event using the Stableford scoring system. Gross and net prizes will be awarded. Wow! What a tough winter to work on your golf game. It seemed like the whole United States was

holding on as we all were a little colder and snowier than years past. The Winter Series Seminars worked their magic as we used the Nicklaus Ballroom to showcase the Academy’s seven building blocks and how to make lasting improvements on your game. Winter has finally let go and spring is here and with it the hope of better golf. In keeping with our vision of operating the finest teaching program for a club community in the U.S.A., the Colleton River Golf Academy was busy in the off season attending trade shows, hosting demo days, and training our Professionals on the finer points of instruction. Our goal of creating a fun and productive learning experience for the Members and their guests will continue as we head full swing into the spring and summer months. Golf schools, clinics, private lessons and our new Happy Hour Clinic, Thursdays at 5:00 pm are all designed to help you “Manage Your Golf Game” so we encourage you to take advantage of these programs.

Please welcome Derrick Garrou and Logan Scott to the Academy team! Both are Class A PGA Professionals and we feel very fortunate to have them on our Team of Instructors. Use Your Athleticism Taken from: The Full Swing Building Block of the Colleton River Golf Academy One of the fundamentals of the full swing is to tap into your athleticism while in motion. Much like throwing an object (like a baseball or golf ball), it’s best to wind up on your back foot, shift weight toward your front foot (target), then release your arm and ball toward the target. Although more refined, this winding and unwinding when throwing an object is the same athletic move that we use when hitting a golf ball. Look at the sequence of pictures included here and see if you can recognize the athletic move.

Collegiate Golf Teams Visit Colleton River

Spring is a busy time for collegiate golf and the time window between hitting balls in a dome and the first match is usually short.

Periodically, Colleton River Plantation Club hosts teams which are usually sponsored by an alumni/member and in need of some outdoor practice before matches. DePaul University, Michigan State, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Doug Stadler Mike Van Sykle DePaul University Golf Team and Penn State were some of the schools that came to Colleton during late winter to tune up their game. Also, Marquette University stand out, Mike Van Sykle, who practiced at Colleton before his bid for PGA Tour status, passed the first stage of Q-school but didn’t make it all the way for his tour card. He is currently playing on the Gateway Tour.

CRGA Student Spotlight Our student spotlight is shining on Monique Guffey this month for her dedicated effort in becoming the best golfer she can be. Mrs. Guffey has taken advantage of the Fitness Center to tune up her golf muscles and has taken private lessons with Director of Instruction, David La Pour. “From

putting to full swing, Mrs. Guffey’s work ethic and desire to play great golf has fit in well with the Golf Academy’s instructional program,” says La Pour. We applaud her dedication and perseverance in working on her golf game and wish her continued success!

this winter was a cold one, not even the snow could slow down the fun had at the winter Club events.

Trivia Night (which has taken on quite a following) entices participation with questions from a wide range of categories, challenging Members to recall those tidbits of information they have tucked away from years past. Of course there are those questions that only the literary expert or doctor in the house can answer, but all in all, Trivia Night has proven to be an “all team sport!”

Upcoming Trivia Night Dates: Thursday, April 15th Thursday, May 13th Members enjoyed a snow-filled night of jazz with the Teri Rini Quartet while celebrating at the Valentine’s Dinner which was followed by Sunday’s Valentine’s Day Brunch at the Dye and the Morris Whiteside Gallery tour at the Nicklaus Clubhouse.

The Art Society has enjoyed two wonderful Artist Workshops so far this year with instruction by Mary Ann Putzier in January and Nancy Thompson in February. The Member Art Wall was updated March 1st and features original artwork by our Members. The Member Art Wall is located just beyond the Receptionist Desk at the Nicklaus Clubhouse. Artist Workshops are open to all levels from beginners to advanced, so everyone who is interested or is considering dusting off their brushes are encouraged to attend.

Do you have your Junior Certification?

Juniors are eligible to use Club facilities unaccompanied after demonstrating their proficiency through a certification process in the golf, tennis, fitness center, pool and dining areas. The certification process for each includes the sections on etiquette, attire, rules, and a demonstration of abilities, as well as the successful completion of a written exam. The director of each of these areas or their designee will be responsible for administering the certification process. Parents wishing to have their junior certified should contact the director in the area of interest. Certified juniors who fail to observe the rules in a given area are subject to suspension of privileges. Uncertified juniors and children under 12 years of age are eligible to use all Club facilities, but in order to do so they must be under the direct supervision of a responsible adult.

Member billing is an area we have been focusing on recently to allevi-

ate billing errors. Therefore, we are enlisting your help to ensure the proper charges are being posted to the correct account. To assist us in identifying Members, we are asking you to stop by the Nicklaus Front Desk the next time you’re in the Clubhouse to have your picture taken, if you haven’t done so already. Or, if it’s more convenient, email your photo (individual or with your spouse) to Sawyer Strelcheck at sawyers@colletonriverclub.com. These pictures will not only be loaded to our database, but also uploaded to our website so you can reference other Members you meet when visiting.

Another change you may notice is the presentation of Member checks at the end of your meal for signature. This step will also help resolve improper Member billing. Once these measures are implemented, we will become more efficient in reducing the number of billing errors as well as any inconvenience to the Members while reducing any losses the Club could incur. We are relentless in pursuing better ways to improve your Club experience, and with your photos and signatures, it brings us one step closer.

During the spring and fall months, we have an increasing demand in our dining rooms with the activities planned for you. I encourage you to make reservations if you are planning to dine or attend any of the Club events to avoid disappointment in not getting a reservation or prevent unnecessary waits. Take note when making your reservation time; the time you have reserved will be the time you will be seated.

This allows us the ability to properly ensure a seamless dining experi-

ence. When planning to gather for cocktails before dinner, whether on the verandah watching the sun set or in the Pub with your family and friends, please allow ample time between cocktailing and your dinner reservation.

The pool opened for the season Saturday, March 13th. Hours of operation are 7am until 8pm. The pool-side Snack Bar operates Saturdays and Sundays from 10am until 4pm, weather permitting. On holiday weekends and the week of July fourth, the Snack Bar will also be open during the times mentioned above. Wines can complement a time

of year, just like good food.

After a rather harsh winter, we are all ready to indulge in the spring season. We can enjoy the chorus of birds that entertain us as we awaken and throughout the day. Spring is the time to get re-acquainted with the outdoors and our favorite white wine. Chardonnays dominate the domestic market, but the season calls for wines a little bit lighter and more refreshing; wines that can be enjoyed with or without food accompaniment.

Sauvignon Blanc, popular white blends and the latest “buzz” wine, Torrontes, are a perfect fit. Sauvignon Blancs are dry and crisp, with flavors of citrus, vanilla and melon. Club favorites include California’s Star Lane (from the Santa Ynez Valley) and Chile’s Casa Lapostolle (from the Rapel Valley). Many have recently discovered the pleasant balance of white blends.

California’s Kendall Jackson’s Summation presents a blending of ten different grapes with flavors of honeydew, apricot, pink grapefruit and white pepper. The result is a refreshing, creamy, soft and dry wine. Australia’s Peter Lehmann Layers blends five grapes to produce “flavors of lemon, peach, dried apricot and green melon, and, come together to give a pleasant perception of sweetness. Extremely clean and tasty, the wine's mash-up of fresh and fruity flavors are not overpowering…” (examiner.com). The latest word in wine circles is the release of very good Torrontes. The grape is grown exclusively in Argentina and has floral and citrus flavors (lemon and orange notes). Very aromatic, the wine is light, crisp and fruity, but still dry. Diageo’s San Telmo is a great representation and very affordable (around $7.00 a bottle). Don’t be afraid to try an unfamiliar wine. Sample when you can, you may discover a new favorite.

Sit back and relax. We can once again take pleasure in the warm breeze as it carries the aromas of all the flowers it touched before arrival. Select your favorite wine and toast a welcome back to spring.

We work very hard to communicate all the events, programs, and hours of operation to our Membership, yet we continue to hear those dreaded words “I did not know about that.” What I have come to realize is that many of our Members do not know how we communicate. So I would like to take this opportunity to tell you how the information here at the Club is disseminated.

Our main communication tool is our email updates. These are sent out three times per week.

HOW DID YOU FIRST LEARN ABOUT COLLETON RIVER PLANTATION? We first heard about this great place in the Lowcountry with the awesome weather from our friends Rob & Janice Norton. Then, Colleton River just kept coming up in conversations with other folks. It seemed like everyone had heard of this special place.

Phill has pursued photography (as an art form) for the past 40+ years and has always found the Hilton Head area appealing in that regard, even more so after becoming Colleton River Members in 1998 with his wife, Mary Collins. When asked what inspires him, he simply stated, “1,500 beautiful acres, spectacular sunsets & sunrises, water views, a fantastic array of birds and seasonal migration sites as well as wonderful vegetation, particularly our tremendous live oaks. These are all the types of subjects I’m interested in shooting. Now if there were only MOUNTAINS here, it would be perfect!”

Phill is a member of both the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) and the Carolinas’ Nature Photographers Association (CNPA). His affiliation with BetterPhoto.com (his website host) and his recent move onto the Fine Art America (www.fineartamerica.com) online, fine art marketing website has a twofold purpose. On one hand, Better Photo & FAA both facilitate feedback on Phill’s uploaded images from other experienced photographers (pros through serious amateurs) which he believes helps him improve as a photographer, and secondly, provides an opportunity to share his photography and achieve some financial return as his investment in equipment (camera bodies, lenses, computer software) now and in the future is not insignificant.

While Phill has sold some image prints as artwork on a piecemeal basis, it was time for him to get better organized. “I believe every capable artist enjoys sharing his or her work with others and thrives on the positive feedback such sharing often produces, but also learns from the less positive feedback,” stated Phill.

We were determined to buy an existing home and ended our search after seeing a lot on Oak Tree Road with beautiful live oak trees, so much for sticking to our plan. We are building a home!

AFTER YOU BOUGHT, HOW LONG BEFORE YOU MOVED IN? We broke ground on our house in November ‘09 and are hoping to be moved in soon.

Derrick Garrou was born and raised in Old Fort, NC. Prior to his golf career, Derrick worked alongside his father in the family pottery business, Garrou Pottery, for 11 years. Upon entering the PGA in the spring of 2003, Derrick was elected as a member in December 2009. When not performing his duties as a Golf Professional, Derrick enjoys working on his golf game, reading, fishing, making pottery and rooting for the Georgia Tech, Yellow Jackets.

Logan was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. In 2001 Logan graduated from St. Xavier High School and went on to attend Campbell University in Buies Creek, North Carolina, where he enrolled in the Professional Golfers Management Program and graduated with a degree in Business Administration.

While attending Campbell UniLogan Scott versity he interned at Big Spring Country Club, Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst, Pinehurst Resort-Course #7, and Pine Needles Country Club. Over the past four years Logan held the position of Assistant Golf Professional at Old Town Club in Winston Salem, North Carolina. He enjoys teaching, merchandising, and conducting tournaments. He has been a Class A member of the PGA since 2006. Outside of golf, Logan enjoys college sports, mainly basketball. His favorite teams are the Boston Celtics and the University of Kentucky basketball team.

These camps are a great way for your junior golfer to have fun while improving their golf game. Starting at 10:30 am we talk about rules and etiquette, then go out and work on putting, short game, and full swing, finishing at 12:00 pm. The juniors are welcome to play the Borland course after Camp.

Also new to Colleton River, we have started a customized program for the Membership with the junior in mind. If you have juniors visiting and would like our Academy Staff to customize a golf program during their visit, let one of our Instructors know, and we will work with you on making their visit a fun and golf- productive stay.

HJGT Winter Championship - Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida January 9-10, 2010 PRESS RELEASE - Vilcheck comes from behind to claim victory, Harris edges Eisch to secure title Ponte Vedra Beach, FL – The 2010 Hurricane Junior Golf Tour season got underway this past weekend in frigid Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Battling the conditions and the below freezing weather, the players were forced to find new and creative ways in which to capitalize and post low scores on successive days. As the tournament went on, the emergence of what seemed like a calling from the heaven arrived. The sun finally broke through the clouds, allowing both the greens and the players an opportunity to loosen up.

As for the course, Ponte Vedra Inn & Country Club’s Ocean Course provided some of the most majestic scenes available to the junior golfers and spectators of the tournament.

Chandler Vilcheck of Bluffton, South Carolina started off the tournament strong by posting two birdies in his first three holes. After struggling on the back nine of his first round, he quickly rebounded and birdied both the second and third holes to jump to a quick 2-under par. When all was said and done, Chandler fired a 6-over par, 150, to take home his first victory on the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour with rounds of 77-73. After firing an impressive round one 75, August Jonas from Jacksonville, Florida, fired a second round 78, and a combined 153, to edge Sam Jackson III from Pelion, South Carolina and Walter Kerr of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida by one stroke (154).

Spring is finally here and tennis is in full swing around the world with the Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tennis Tours competing in the American circuit before heading to Europe. On the local front, Colleton has two Ladiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; teams and three Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s teams playing in the USTA Spring Leagues. This season culminates in early May with the State Finals which will be held on Hilton Head Island.

The Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Teams are combined with Belfair members to fill the rosters, and I am confident that next year at least one of these teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rosters will be made up of purely Colleton Members.

In early March, we had our Annual Tennis Professional Exhibition once again. The evening, although a bit chilly, turned out to be great fun with plenty of exciting points followed by a great meal at the Nicklaus Clubhouse. One of the guest Professionals pointed out to me what we have known for a long time â&#x20AC;&#x201C; what a great place Colleton is to play tennis,

with wonderful food and ambiance, and the nicest of people. Thank you for making them feel so welcome.

The Bluffton Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Center got a face-lift thanks to the work of Colleton River Plantation Members, who transformed the Centerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s playground by shoveling sand, raking mulch, assembling sand boxes, and erecting screens. Additionally they built a shed and benches under a pagoda, and installed donated computers in many of the classrooms. How did they accomplish this you may ask? With the hard work of the five ladies pictured above. From left: Sheila Sylvester, Mary Jo Cubbin, Marlene Brenner, Sue Glancey and Doris Beedie raised over $10,500 in Bill Spadafora & Bill McDaniel donations for the Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Center by creating the Colleton River Cookbook, which included recipe favorites from a majority of our Membership. With the long hours this committee put in and the generosity of our Membersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; purchases, Colleton River was able to really make a difference in our community.

A wonderful time was had by all as they delved into the aged wines and an innovative dinner.

Kudos to Dr. Jim Cerilli! We got a tip from a little birdie who mentioned how well kept his lot is here on Plantation. We were lucky enough to catch him on his property one morning to see the transformation that he and wife, Barbara’s lot has been through. “It was a jungle!” Dr. Cerilli described, “You really should’ve seen it!” Dr. Cerilli has planted over 30 trees and 250+ bushes, not to mention clearing the entire property of weeds and roughage. A big “Thank You” from us to you Dr. & Mrs. Cerilli, for showing pride in your community.
