SUMMER CAMPS 2022

Collegiate School Summer Quest 2022

As we celebrate a major milestone in our 50th year of offering summer programs to the community, we are once again proud to provide over 175 camps, including some of our most popular camps, such as Hooked on Books, Discover Richmond, Cub and sports camps as well as new camps that include Get Your Math On, Intro to Songwriting, Media Magic—Everything Art and so many more! Our camps, which begin in June and extend through the third week of August, have something for everyone. Our goal is to provide joy for each and every child. The Summer Quest community fosters fun and engaging camp experiences where every camper is valued, nurtured and challenged. Our emphasis on quality, combined with our beautiful campuses, provides for a camp experience your child will cherish forever. (With the evolving nature of COVID-19, the School’s mitigation protocols, if any, will be determined and instituted closer to the start of the summer camp season.) MANY CAMPS FILL TO THEIR MAXIMUM ENROLLMENT. REGISTER EARLY TO RESERVE YOUR SPACE. The Summer Quest Office is located in Luck Hall, on the Lower School Campus. Summer Quest office hours are 8 a.m. – 3 p.m., Monday–Friday. Collegiate School will be closed on Monday, July 4. WHY SUMMER QUEST CAMPS? • Summer Quest offers all-day options every week, through the middle of August, so campers have the opportunity to spend the entire day with Collegiate’s Summer Quest. • Collegiate Summer Quest offers more than 175 different programs for preschoolers through adults. For the past 15 years, over 50% of Summer Quest campers have been non-Collegiate students. • Our camper-to-staff ratios ensure that our participants are getting individualized attention. • The majority of our camps have been developed and are led by Collegiate faculty and staff. • Summer Quest has enrolled more than 1,300 campers each of the past 17 years with record enrollment as high as nearly 1,600 campers! • Along with our innovative Mooreland Road campus, Collegiate School’s Robins Campus has state-of-theart athletic fields and facilities. • Our campuses are easily accessed from anywhere in Richmond. See Page 60 for directions.

INFORMATION

FOR MORE INFORMATION • Visit www.collegiate-va.org and click on Summer Quest for up-to-date information throughout the year. • Call the Summer Quest office at 804.665.1750 or 804.741.9714, or email summerquest@collegiate-va.org. • The Summer Quest office is located in Luck Hall on the Lower School campus. See the campus map on the inside back cover for the exact location. • The Summer Quest office hours are Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Summer Quest is closed on Monday, July 4.

REGISTRATION, PAYMENT AND REFUND INFORMATION

• The $50 per program deposit is nonrefundable unless a camp is canceled by Summer Quest. However, if a participant changes his or her registration, the remainder of the tuition (less the $50 nonrefundable deposit per camp) can be used as a credit toward another Summer Quest 2021 program. The credit cannot be transferred to future summer programs.

• Summer Quest welcomes all families interested in our programs; however, we recognize that some children require more support than we are able to provide. For that reason, we reserve the right after enrollment to recommend that your child be removed from a program should we not be able to provide the required resources. If that is the case, a full refund will be issued. We encourage you to contact the Summer Quest office at 804.741.9714 to discuss your child’s individual needs prior to registration.

• All programs are subject to maximum and minimum enrollments. Under-enrolled programs may be canceled. • Participants are enrolled in the order in which their registrations are received. You will be notified if the program you have registered for is full. • Tuition is not refunded or prorated for part-time attendance, including situations such as a participant’s dismissal because of a disciplinary action.

• To register, each participant must complete or update their registration information online (or complete and mail a registration form) and pay a nonrefundable deposit of $50 per program, prior to May 1, to ensure enrollment. Payments may be made by credit card online or by submitting a check (made out to ‘Collegiate School Summer Quest’) with registration form. Registrations submitted after May 1 must include tuition paid in full.

• Campers will not be permitted to attend a Summer Quest program if there is an outstanding balance on their account.

PHOTOGRAPHS AND QUOTATIONS

• Balance must be paid in full by May 1 to continue to reserve each participant’s place. If full payment is not received by May 1, the space may be given to the next person on the waiting list.

• Summer Quest has the right to use photographs or quotations of Summer Quest participants for future brochures, advertisements and other Summer Quest marketing purposes, unless otherwise noted on the Registration Form by the parent/guardian.

• After registering for programs, any future changes in registration must be made in writing (via email or written note) and submitted to the Summer Quest office.

If you like our camps, you’ll love our school! FOR MORE INFORMATION, PLEASE CALL OUR ADMISSION OFFICE 804.740.7077

ENRICHMENT

CUBS

Half-day and full-day camps are available based on age. Cubs Camps are themed activity camps for children as young as three-years-old and as old as any rising 1st Grader.

Sharon Hamner, Director Sharon is a Kindergarten Counselor at Cougar Quest, Collegiate’s After-school Program, and has been a Summer Quest Counselor for the last four years. For more information about Cubs Camps, please contact Sharon at sharon_hamner@collegiate-va.org.

SESSION THEMES Session I – June 20 – 24 Wacky Water

Session III – July 11 – 15 Digging for Dinosaurs

Start your summer off with a blast! A blast of water that is. How does a rain cloud make rain? Do oil and water mix? These are just a few questions we will explore this week. So grab a swimsuit and towel and prepare to get wet while learning about — and playing in — the water.

Calling all dinosaur lovers! Join us in our dinosaur excavation site to see what bones you can uncover. If you are a fan of dinosaurs, then this is your week for all things dinosaur. We will learn how big dinosaur feet were, visit a dinosaur cave and make dinosaur fossils. We might even eat a dinosaur egg!

Session II – June 27 – July 1 Construction Zone

Session IV – July 18 – 22 Under the Sea

Grab your blueprints and your hard hat and join us when the construction whistle blows. Let’s get building with excavators, backhoe loaders, dump trucks and more!

Explore the wonders of the ocean! Join us to play in the water, create sand sculptures and discover sea shells as well as a number of other cool sea creatures. Take a turn in our submarine to explore the ocean depths! Session V – July 25 – 29 Down on the Farm Learn all about life on a farm. We will milk cows, gather chicken eggs, play in the mud with the pigs, plant and harvest crops, learn how to shear a sheep and more. So get up early, put on your boots and join us for farming fun!

ACTING, CREATIVE PLAY AND MORE – YOUTH SHAKESPEARE Cynde Liffick, Bard Unbound Rising 3rd Graders – Rising 5th Graders July 11 – 15 • 1 – 4 p.m. $230 • Bring a filled water bottle to camp each day. Start with a phrase and end with performing an entire play. Students will have fun with the language, learn some facts about Shakespeare and the Elizabethan era, get to know the characters and learn a bit about the Bard. The play utilized in this camp is Shakespeare’s comedy, The Tempest. This play was inspired by a letter from William Strachery, Secretary of Jamestown Colony, who experienced the shipwreck that is thought to have inspired The Tempest. Campers will discuss the association between Strachery’s letter and Shakespeare’s creation of this play. Within the process of learning and rehearsing an abbreviated Shakespeare play, students will work on personal and interpersonal skills including focus, compassion, imagination, patience, problemsolving and collaboration. They will also work on basic dramatic skills such as enunciation, focus, cooperation, language skills and acting. Finally, this camp gives students a leg up for deeper immersion into Shakespeare in the future! We ask that each child come to every day of camp, as each day builds upon the day before and each individual is important to the experience of the group. Cynde Liffick, co-founder of Richmond Shakespeare Festival at Agecroft Hall, is in her 20th year as a Shakespeare instructor, director and performer. Her present company, Bard Unbound, takes Shakespeare off the page and on the stage through Virginia. For more information, contact Cynde Liffick at cynde@ bardunbound.org.

CHINESE CULTURE AND LANGUAGE IMMERSION – BEGINNER

Frank Becker and Tyler Boyd Rising 3rd Graders – rising 5th Graders June 20 – 24 • 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. $230 • Bring a healthy snack and a filled water bottle to camp each day. Building is fun, tangible and part of our everyday experience. This camp teaches kids about the built environment by exploring science, technology, engineering, art and math through hands-on activities designed to encourage creative, outside-the-box thinking. Architecture helps with visual learning, observation, reasoning and critical thinking. The camp will engage children physically and mentally as they use their imaginations and become designers for a week. We will design floor plans and build a miniature neighborhood, take a look at structural concepts by creating 3-D toothpick pyramids, prisms, domes and polyhedrons. Campers will learn about the physics of creating sound structures by building KEVA Plank towers that stand on strong foundations. They will explore how to balance load by constructing cantilever bridges. Each camper will also investigate the properties of varied building materials and create their own custom concrete aggregate followed up by a drop test. Finally, all campers will work together to create a large-scale geodesic dome. We will work as individuals and in groups to look at real-life problems and simplified versions of what architects do each day. Session II: Aug 1-5 • 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. $375 This camp is one week in length. Session I and II can be taken as stand-alone camps or taken together. • Bring a lunch, a towel for rest time, a healthy snack and a filled water bottle to camp each day. Who wants to get ready for school? This camp was developed to provide a taste of what Kindergarten will feel like for your child, with a focus on introducing basic reading and math skills. This camp will be offered in a two-week session at the beginning of summer in June and an additional one-week session in August. Campers will experience different learning opportunities in each session, so children may register for both sessions! We will use familiar nursery rhymes and fairy tales to introduce campers to many important reading skills, such as identifying familiar letters and sounds, looking at pictures for clues, tracking from left to right, pointing to text and matching our voices to the words we read. Familiar rhymes and stories will help develop your child’s confidence and eagerness to “have a go” at reading! The math content of our camp focuses on number identification, practicing written number formation, sorting and recognizing, extending and creating patterns. We utilize many math manipulatives to incorporate the practice of fine motor skills. Card games are also taught as a fun way to reinforce math concepts. While campers will think they are just having fun, they will really be strengthening their mathematical abilities, such as problem-solving skills, number sense, spatial skills, memory and much more. Emily Roig Rising 6th Graders – rising 8th Graders Session I: June 27 – July 1 • 9 a.m – 12 p.m. Session II: August 1 - 5 • 9 a.m – 12 p.m. $230 per session Session I and II can be taken as stand-alone camps or combined for a more in-depth experience. • Bring a healthy snack and a filled water bottle to camp each day. Do you like words? Do you like music? Do you like creating something from nothing? Join local singer/songwriter (and Spanish educator) Emily Roig for this first-ever Collegiate songwriting camp! In this camp, we will share the music, bands, and singers that we love to listen to and discuss why these artists bring us so much joy. We will also learn about differing approaches to the songwriting and creative process, and we will discover and discuss the components of a well-written song. We’ll look at a variety of genres and styles of music and writing — everything from country and rap to folk, pop and beyond. We’ll also test out a variety of exercises and tricks to help boost our creativity and even try our hand at writing an actual song from scratch. You do not have to be a musician or play an instrument to be a part of this fun musical adventure. All you need to bring is a curious spirit and an ability to collaborate and work well with others. By the end of the week, we’ll have a deeper appreciation for music, songwriters and hopefully a handful of songs to share. Emily is a soulful folk singer-songwriter and worship leader. Emily spent three years honing her songwriting skills in Nashville, Tenn., where she wore many hats in the music business and released a variety of musical projects, including the award-winning single “Skin.” From there, she heeded the call to move to Richmond, Va., where she spent four years on staff at Hope Church as a worship leader and songwriter and released multiple projects, including her latest single “You Are Loved.” Emily also has a passion for Spanish and education and taught middle and high school Spanish for five years while living in St. Louis. She now spends her time tutoring students in Spanish and a variety of other subjects while also performing, writing, recording and producing original music. Sometimes she even writes songs in Spanish. Learn more about Emily and her music at her website www.emilyroig.com. For more information, contact Emily Roig at Emily.roig@gmail.com.

Though the pacing will differ, course content and academic demands remain consistent with the semester-long versions of these electives. For credit classes, students will earn the same half credit they would have earned for taking the course in the fall or spring. These courses are also open to non-Collegiate students seeking summer enrichment opportunities.

A student who misses two or more classes in a four-week Summer Quest academic course typically may not receive academic credit for that course.

SAT STRATEGIES CSS Tutoring Services Rising 11th Graders – rising 12th Graders Session I: July 11 – 14 • 9 – 11 a.m. Session II: July 18 – 21 • 9 – 11 a.m. Session III: July 25 – 28 • 9 – 11 a.m. Session IV: Aug. 1 – 4 • 9 – 11 a.m. Monday – Thursday $575 per session Want to prepare for the August and fall SATs during the summer? CSS Tutoring Services is offering their full SAT preparation and strategy course on the Collegiate campus. Take advantage of their 25-plus years of test preparation experience and unique approach to helping you achieve your desired scores. The SAT Strategies course is designed and presented in four strategy classes (Monday–Thursday). While each class includes skills review beyond the basic level, the primary objective is to build a successful strategy for test taking. At the first class meeting, each student receives a practice book and a folder of information. Inside the folder are the test strategy guidelines, the class assignments and a list of important vocabulary words. Each class meeting ends with a homework assignment to reinforce skills. Carolyn Scanniello (founder/instructor) started in the SAT tutoring business in 1990. She is a graduate of the University of Richmond with a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degree specializing in exceptional education. She has tutored SAT preparation skills individually and in small groups for more than 25 years. Carolyn, who created this unique curriculum, provides instructor training and lectures occasionally on the subject of SAT/ACT preparation. She teaches both regular- and honors-level students. Chris Scanniello (owner/instructor) joined the organization in 2009. He is a graduate of Virginia Tech with a bachelor’s degree in industrial and systems engineering. After more than 11 years in the semiconductor industry working as a software engineer, he returned to student instruction as a private tutor for both high school and college students. He conducts all sections of both regular and honors SAT and ACT classes (group and individual) and provides instructor training. SATIRE

Vlastik Svab Rising 11th Graders – rising 12th Graders July 11 – Aug. 5 • 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Monday – Friday $1,095 The last 17 years of U.S. involvement in conflicts around the globe have fundamentally changed our perspectives of war and those who fight it. At this pivotal juncture in American history, we should explore the literature that has been written about conflict and its effects on those in the battle and beyond. We will read depictions of and reactions to warfare, ranging from the Trojan War to our most recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Texts will include poetry, fiction, nonfiction and graphic media, including work from Kurt Vonnegut, Kevin Powers, Erich Maria Remarque, Garry Trudeau as well as military blogs written directly from the field. The graphic nature of the subject matter will require a serious and thoughtful approach to a topic that has been a persistent presence in society. Vlastik Svab has taught Upper School English at Collegiate for 12 years. Previously, he taught honors and AP English at Mount Carmel Academy in New Orleans. Along with teaching English 9 and JuniorSenior electives, he is also the senior speech program coordinator and an advisor for Collegiate’s online student newspaper, The Match. Qualified Collegiate students — those who have earned an Aaverage or better in their last two semesters of English — may take this elective for Honors credit. However, this will require additional independent reading and writing. For more information, contact Vlastik Svab at vsvab@collegiate-va.org.

Vlastik Svab Rising 11th Graders – rising 12th Graders June 13 – July 8 • 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Monday – Friday No class on Monday, July 4 $1,095 Comedian Lewis Black describes fundamentalism as “the inability to laugh at yourself.” Dave Barry defines a sense of humor as “a measurement of the extent to which we realize that we are trapped in a world almost totally devoid of reason. Laughter is how we express the anxiety we feel at this knowledge.” Satire comes in many forms: printed word, image and modern visual media. Scholars, journalists and artists have been mocking social norms and human folly since ancient Greece, and this course will continue the tradition of recognizing the hypocrisies and vices of human society. Notable satirists, including Jonathan Swift, Mark Twain, Edith Wharton, Aristophanes, David Sedaris and Joseph Heller, are just a few of the masters of wit and acerbic sarcasm who are both smarter and funnier than you. Vlastik Svab has taught Upper School English at Collegiate for 12 years. Previously, he taught honors and AP English at Mount Carmel Academy in New Orleans, Louisiana. Along with teaching English 9 and Junior-Senior electives, he is also the senior speech program coordinator and an advisor for Collegiate’s online student newspaper, The Match. Qualified Collegiate students — those who have earned an Aaverage or better in their last two semesters of English — may take this elective for Honors credit. However, this will require additional independent reading and writing. For more information, contact Vlastik Svab at vsvab@collegiate-va.org.

HEALTH & WELLNESS CLASSES All Collegiate students must complete Health and Wellness I and Health and Wellness II, each half credit. A student may take both sections of Health and Wellness II (Driver’s Education and Fitness and Nutrition) during the summer. This will allow for flexibility in the student’s schedule during the school year.

DRIVER’S EDUCATION – CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION Rising 10th Graders – rising 12th Graders June 13 – 24 • 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Monday – Friday $325 Classroom instruction is a key part of securing a driver’s license. Taking this class in the summer frees up time in the fall or spring for other pursuits. This Driver’s Education course completes the classroom requirement needed by a student to obtain a driver’s permit in Virginia. For more information, contact the Summer Quest Office at summerquest@collegiate-va.org.

ADULTS

INTRODUCTION TO MINDFULNESS TOPICS ON SELF-LEADERSHIP Michael Brost Adults, 18-years-old and above July 18 – 21 • 5 – 6:30 p.m. Monday – Thursday $200 Mindfulness is a practice of presence and self-awareness, which is the foundation for self-leadership and a prerequisite to leading others. In this class, participants will have the opportunity to learn the attitudes and practices of mindfulness, the realms of emotional intelligence and the neuroscience behind it all. Come experience the same training that Fortune 500 companies, professional athletic teams and hospitals have relied on to maximize performance and to cultivate positive leadership skills. Participants will also be trained in John Maxwell’s laws of leadership, which are key to developing yourself and those around you and are essential tools that make a great and lasting impact. The leader sees the big picture, but he or she needs other leaders to help make their mental picture a reality. As a group, we are going to embark on a journey of personal growth. In this training course, you will be challenged to take the many small steps that lead to success each and every day of your life. You’ll learn principles that have been tested and proven again and again. The time you spend with this material will prove to be a worthy investment. Michael Brost has been at Collegiate since 1993. In March 2016, he became a John Maxwell Team Certified Trainer, Coach and Speaker

in Leadership. Currently, Michael works with individuals and businesses in the Richmond community who seek to gain greater self-awareness, personal responsibility and accountability in every aspect of life and is currently a student under Jack Kornfield and Tara Brock’s Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Training Program.
