MISSION STATEMENT Sequoias Community College District is dedicated to student learning, success, and equity by providing transfer education, basic skills, and workforce development for our diverse student population.
VISION STATEMENT T he entire College of the Sequoias community works in an environment of mutual respect to realize the following vision: COS students achieve their full educational potential. The college strives to provide an educational pathway for every student with regard to background, disability, location, culture, learning modality, and preconceived time frames. COS promotes an environment that creates a positive attitude among COS employees that carries over to the students and into the community. COS is a community leader whose contributions positively impact the lives of the population it serves. Educational programs at COS are aligned to meet the constantly emerging economic and workforce development needs of the community through partnerships with business, government, industry and labor.
ABOUT COLLEGE OF THE SEQUIOAS College of the Sequoias is a two-year community college with an enrollment of about 14,000 students that offers educational and enrichment programs for the residents of its district in Tulare and Kings counties. The college district was established in 1926 and moved to its current 62-acre campus in Visalia in 1940. In addition to the Visalia campus, COS operates a college center in Hanford, opened the newest college center in Tulare, and conducts classes at various locations throughout communities in the district. College of the Sequoias is a member of the American Association of Community Colleges and the Community College League of California. The college is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, an institutional accrediting body recognized by the Commission on Recognition of Postsecondary Accreditation and the U.S. Department of Education. The college is approved by the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service to accept international students and is approved for veteran training under state and federal laws.

STUDENT AWARD RECIPIENTS ZOE MARIE SWEENEY ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AWARD Zoe portrays and exemplifies the qualities of a College of the Sequoias student. She is determined, humbled, dedicated, caring for others, and has a pleasant personality. She has demonstrated that she can exceed in her academics beyond the highest standards while volunteering herself to many other projects and extracurricular activities, such as but not limited to Friday Night Labs, Expanding Your Horizons – Young Women in Science Conferences, UC Davis Pre-Medical Conference, Noche de Ciencias, MESA, and many other student clubs. She was also accepted as an undergraduate researcher in neuroscience during an out-of-state internship during the semester break. Zoe is a true Giant. Her impressive grade point average of a 4.0 is representative of challenging curriculum from course work in Organic Chemistry, Modern Physics, Calculus (1, 2, and 3), Computer Science, Biology, Philosophy, and Sociology. Her mind is as strong as her determination, and her heart is as humble as her personality. She delivers herself well and represents the college in and outside the classroom. Zoe’s contribution to our campus extends beyond her academic achievement and her participation in the various activities. She was a Supplemental Instructor (SI) to some of the most challenging courses and tutored other students in the MESA support lab. She also assisted some of her professors with transitioning their courses into Canvas by providing them with a student’s perspective on how the program functions. Zoe has impressive potential. She exhibits intelligence beyond her years. Her character holds sincere leadership and strong unselfish values. In the Fall, Zoe plans to transfer to the University of California – Los Angeles.
MIA SYVIRATHPHAN CAMPUS COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD Mia Syvirathphan has been an extremely busy young lady while attending COS. Her outstanding leadership skills have been reflected in many ways through campus engagement and her involvement in the community. Mia served as the Commissioner of Clubs in Student Senate and has been instrumental in encouraging clubs on campus to take an active role in campus life. Her desire to promote campus involvement was reflected through policies and procedures to help structure the organization of clubs. Not only was she involved in Student Senate and clubs, but she was an active member of the REALM program. This program encourages incoming students that are STEM majors to network with the REALM program alumni. REALM also does outreach to our local high schools. She was actively involved in STEPS which registered high school students in their classes and provided guided campus tours to incoming freshmen. Mia served on several campus communities and was an excellent student representative. She took an active role in many of the STEM program activities encouraging students to get involved in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Not only does Mia take an active role on campus life but she is dedicated to serve our community. She has taken an active role in a community event “Expanding your Horizons” which involved 800 young women in our community. This event explores STEM careers by engaging them in interesting hands on activities. She volunteers her time at Wilson Elementary School as a teacher aid for Kindergarten classes teaching math and English skills. She is an active member in the Iu Mien Community and participates in events for this organization. Mia has achieved high academic standards while still taking an active role in campus life and in the community. Due to her dedication and efforts this has made her an excellent recipient for this award. She plans to transfer to Fresno State and major in Biology.
ERIKA MACEDO GIANT SPIRIT AWARD Erika Macedo is a bright student who has worked hard to strive towards reaching her academic goals. She has shown great determination and perseverance while making her way through her courses with English being her second language. She wants to be an example for her three boys and show them the importance of getting an education in a country that gives everyone the opportunity to attain educational goals. Erika has demonstrated great academic success all while raising a family, working, volunteering at her church, and being part of a Mariachi group. One semester, Erika had a medical condition that required surgery, but managed to continue working hard to complete her coursework. She did not allow her medical condition to get her off track. In her pursuit of and ADT in Early Childhood Education she acknowledged that an ADT would require additional courses, but she wants to further her education to earn a bachelor’s degree in the future. Which is something she had never considered when she first started at COS. In addition, she wants to leave the door open to earn a multiple subject/special education credential if she ever decided to change grade levels in teaching. While attending COS Erika applied for part-time jobs with TCOE since she had earned a skills certificate making her eligible for entry-level jobs. To her surprise she was offered a fulltime job. Her hard work and determination had paid off. Although in the beginning she encountered some discouragement from coworkers she overcame her self-doubt and succeeded. She continues to love her job. Erika decided to use her Giant Spirit to push herself through difficult times and towards success.

THE ACADEMIC DRESS In 1895 colleges and universities in the United States adopted a uniform code for academic dress, and this code is followed today. CAP- The cap is the “mortarboard” type with black cloth cover. The gold tassel may be worn by holders of the doctor’s degree. There is no general rule for position of the tassel on the mortarboard. Some institutions, during commencement exercises, require undergraduate candidates for degrees to wear the tassel on the right front side before degrees are conferred and shift them to the left at the moment degrees are awarded. In some respects this custom is a substitute for individual hooding. GOWN-The bachelor’s, master’s and doctor’s gowns differ slightly in pattern. Only the doctor’s gown bears trimmings. These consist of a velvet facing down the front and three velvet bars across each sleeve. HOOD-The color or colors in the lining are those of the college or university which granted the degree. The binding or edging is the color of the faculty or subject in which the degree was granted. Colors associated with various subjects are listed below.
