COLLEGE NOW ANNUAL REPORT

2023 2024 LEGACY OF IMPACT

A Message from..

OUR CEO, LEE FRIEDMAN

As we celebrate another year of making a lasting impact on education and career readiness in Northeast Ohio, we are proud to report that College Now Greater Cleveland has continued to thrive and grow, thanks to the unwavering support of our community, dedicated team members and donors.

When I joined College Now in 2010, our vision was to transform the work from what was primarily college advising and scholarships into one that provided comprehensive college and career advising as well as financial and postsecondary completion supports to students of all ages. I am grateful that we have realized that vision, and the state of the organization is stable and strong.

This marks an exciting moment of transition for the organization and for me personally, as I am stepping down at the end of 2024. As I reflect on the past 14 years, I continually return to the philosophy that has guided me from the beginning. I firmly believe that one of the best ways to ensure that our region thrives is by having an educated and prepared workforce.

Our success would not be possible without the dedication of our team, board of directors, foundations, corporate leaders, elected officials, volunteers and donors.

Their commitment to our mission has been instrumental in helping students achieve their goals and contribute to the Northeast Ohio community. It has been a privilege to be affiliated with an outstanding organization that is helping students of all ages at each stage of their education journey – guiding them through a complex education system to pursue their best outcomes.

I am deeply proud of the work that our growing team has accomplished in the past 14 years, and I’d like to congratulate Dr. Michele Scott Taylor as she becomes the organization’s CEO beginning in January 2025. Michele was my first hire 14 years ago and it was gratifying to promote her to president last year.

Michele has been an integral part of College Now since 2010, and her leadership has been instrumental to our growth and success, including the supplementation of our new strategic plan.

Thank you once again for your partnership and support. I believe the future of our

organization and our community is bright, but we must maintain our collective urgency in helping all members of our community compete in our region’s workforce.

Warm regards,

A Message from..

OUR BOARD CHAIR, MICHAEL COGAN

We are delighted to share with you the remarkable achievements of College Now Greater Cleveland over the past year. During the 2022-2023 academic year, College Now distributed scholarships totaling more than $7.6 million. Additionally, more than 33,000 individuals – including middle and high school students and adult learners – received College Now services, demonstrating our commitment to providing access to educational opportunities for people of all ages.

I want to thank our CEO, Lee Friedman, for her 14 years of leadership that has enriched the lives of thousands of individuals who otherwise may not have received a postsecondary education. She has grown the organization’s staff from 40 to 175 and budget from $4 million to over $35 million; expanded its mission and tirelessly advocated on behalf of students –many of whom are from marginalized communities and are the first in their families to attend college. Lee leaves an indelible mark on the landscape of education in Northeast Ohio.

The College Now board of directors had been aware of Lee’s plans to step down at year end for some time. A transition committee was formed and we

are prepared to pass the baton to Dr. Michele Scott Taylor. I’m proud that College Now is extremely financially and programmatically healthy and stable, and the organization is well-positioned for success under Michele’s leadership.

We want to express our deepest gratitude to you, our donors and supporters, for your generous help, which has allowed College Now to make a meaningful difference in the lives of thousands of individuals in Northeast Ohio. Your support has been invaluable, and we look forward to continuing our important work together.

Sincerely,

We want to express our deepest gratitude to you, our donors and supporters, for your generous help, which has allowed College Now to make a meaningful difference in the lives of thousands of individuals in Northeast Ohio.

About College Now Greater Cleveland

Simply put, we are dedicated to empowering student success. We achieve this by providing and investing in resources to ensure that individuals have a clear path to and through the postsecondary education option that suits them best. Through our comprehensive services, including college and career access advising, financial aid counseling, scholarships and retention services, we guide and support individuals from the initial steps to postsecondary education and beyond.

We believe in the potential of all students.

We are committed to empowering all students across Northeast Ohio to achieve their dreams. It is our goal to undo forms of systemic oppression that face students. We believe the opportunity to complete a postsecondary education should be available to everyone, regardless of race, age, gender identity, religion, sexual orientation, physical or mental ability, ethnicity or income level.

We want people to do well in life, and degrees and professional credentials still matter.

We understand that obtaining a four-year college degree might not be for everyone – and that’s why we also provide support for individuals to get the right kind of education for the career they want. Postsecondary education – any education after high school –still matters and provides continuing value and opportunity.

It matters for individuals

• Nationally, people with a four-year college degree now earn 84% more or $2.8 million over the course of their lifetimes than those who do not have a college degree (2024 Georgetown University Center on Education and Workforce study).

• In Ohio, an individual with a bachelor’s degree is expected to earn $1.1 million more over a lifetime than someone with a high school diploma as their highest level of education. Five of the top 10 most heavily advertised jobs in 2021 in Ohio were concentrated in healthcare, computer related and management occupations, many of which require a minimum four-year degree.

• 75% of net job growth is anticipated to be in occupations associated with some form of postsecondary education (Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services 2028 Ohio Job Outlook Employment Projections report).

• Secure jobs that offer health benefits, paid time off, support for retirement and family-sustaining wages almost always require postsecondary credentials.

We are committed to empowering all students across Northeast Ohio to achieve their dreams.

It matters for Ohio

• Economists estimate that 65% of a region’s community members need a two-year degree, four-year degree or high-value industry recognized certificate to maintain a competitive economy. Unfortunately, Ohio falls short with only 51% of its population meeting those qualifications. To sustain and grow our economy, we must close this 14% gap. This effort begins right here, in our Northeast Ohio communities.

• Ohio needs nearly one million more adults with high-value credentials and postsecondary degrees in order to keep up with employer needs and keep the state’s economy moving. (Ohio Excels 2020 report)

College affordability advising and scholarships

College Now’s work helps students avoid unnecessary borrowing before they go to college and while they are in college. Advisors help students complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is required to secure Pell grants.

Spotlight: Xplore expands to Slavic Village

With an $85,000 grant awarded by Third Federal Savings & Loan, in Fall 2023 College Now Greater Cleveland brought Xplore to 40 high school students who reside in or attend school in Cleveland’s Slavic Village. The afterschool program focuses on college and career readiness, finding the area of study that is best for each student, and ends with an out-of-state trip to explore new cities and campuses.

Spotlight: College Now makes an impact! with Cleveland Guardians partnership

In Fall 2023, College

Now and the Cleveland Guardians united to assist CMSD high school students with afterschool preparation for college entrance exams and exploring career paths in Major League Baseball and other professional sports, including the postsecondary education and training needed for the positions.

Now in its 12th year, the Cleveland Foundation College Now Top Scholars targeted cohort initiative aims to eradicate undermatching for CMSD’s top performing students with GPAs of 3.5 and above and higher entrance exam scores (ACT 24+/SAT 1100+).

Ninety-three percent of Top Scholars in the class of 2023 matriculated to college at such institutions as Bard College, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Fashion Institute of Technology, Marist College, North Carolina A&T University, The Ohio State University and more.

SPOTLIGHT: FORMER TOP SCHOLAR EXCELS IN FINANCE

Driven by a desire to secure her future while attending CMSD’s Cleveland Early College High School, with College Now’s help, Jennifer Nguyen found herself empowered to explore opportunities previously beyond her reach. Today, the

John Carroll University alumna is a financial analyst at HX5, a defense contract company.

Setting up young learners for success starts with educating them that access to college is within their reach. We are proud to partner with College Now in its transformative work to equip students with resources to help navigate the higher education process.”

COLLEGE PERSISTENCE AND RETENTION

Successful support for college students goes far beyond scholarship dollars. For many first-generation students, navigating the college landscape and expectations can be a daunting experience, and something that – without help – can make some students decide to suspend their postsecondary educational endeavors.

College Now has implemented interventions on postsecondary campuses, and the efforts of our university partners are benefiting CMSD graduates. Three strong retention programs at Cleveland State, Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) and The Ohio State University provide both academic and nonacademic supports for Say Yes Cleveland scholarship recipients. These programs are seeing retention rates above 80% and now the first graduates.

Spotlight: Say Yes Scholars Program at Tri-C

The Tri-C Scholars Program launched in 2019 as a lifeline for Cuyahoga Community College students who are enrolled with the Say Yes Cleveland scholarship. It isn’t the $500 stipend students receive each semester that incentivizes them to continue – and ultimately complete – their degree program, but rather the deep connections forged with their Say Yes success coaches from College Now. These coaches go above and beyond to support their students, extending their assistance well past campus boundaries.

College retention and scholarship programs are not just about keeping students in school; they are about investing in the future. By providing the necessary support, we ensure that every promising mind has the opportunity to flourish, contributing not only to their own success but also to the betterment of our society.”

– Dr. Michael Baston, president, Cuyahoga Community College

College Now Mentoring Program

College Now’s Mentoring Program provides vital support to college-going students throughout their postsecondary education, extending up to five years. The program currently supports 1,700 pairs of college mentees and volunteer mentors.

The program boasts a 94% retention rate from students’ freshman to sophomore year and a 71% graduation rate. On average, 92% of our mentored students returned to college for their sophomore year, and 70% of mentored students graduated on time with their degrees, nearly double the national average for their peer group.

College Now has been awarded a three-year AmeriCorps Volunteer Generation Fund grant to increase racial, gender and sexual identity diversity in our volunteer mentor pool.

“College Now’s Mentoring Program gave me resources I would not have had otherwise and to take advantage of the ones available. Though my mentor was in a different field than I, he gently pushed me to set up meetings with professors outside of the classroom that would yield both experience and career development. After college, my mentor even allowed me to list him as a reference that led to my current occupation at Cleveland Clinic at the Lerner Research Institute where I manage a research laboratory and perform research.”

ADULT LEARNER PROGRAM

Each year, College Now extends vital services – including college and career guidance, scholarships and student loan restructuring – to adults ages 19 and older. In total for the 2022-23 academic year, College Now reached out to or responded to inquiries from nearly 13,600 adults; approximately 26% of those adults engaged in group or one-on-one service sessions.

Our adult learner scholarship recipients have a three-year average graduation rate of 82%, significantly higher than the 52% national average for adult learners over 24 years old. In 2022-23, College Now awarded 182 adult learner scholarships.

College Now Leads 3-Year “Comebacker” Awareness Campaign

In February 2023, the City of Cleveland allocated $300,000 of ARPA funds to support a three-year communications and marketing campaign to reach the 60,000 Cleveland residents who have some postsecondary education but did not complete their degree or credential. Year one of the “comebacker” campaign included video, radio spots, targeted website display advertising and social media, which yielded over 7 million impressions.

In November 2023, College Now’s Adult Programs team opened a satellite office in the Greater Cleveland Food Bank’s Community Resource Center. This innovative center addresses some of the root causes of food insecurity – including the lack of educational credentials needed for a fulfilling career. College Now is one of 15 partners providing wraparound services to food pantry shoppers.

College Now Supports Education for Those Experiencing Incarceration

In January 2024, the National College Attainment Network (NCAN) selected College Now for the new Ascendium Cohort Fellowship, a two-year program aimed at supporting students who are incarcerated or formerly incarcerated in pursuing postsecondary education. Just eight organizations across the US were selected for this inaugural project.

At 50 years old, Xiomara Yochum enrolled in the University of Cincinnati, thanks to the support and encouragement she received from College Now. “Without this scholarship, I wouldn’t have been able to [pursue education]. Every time I had a question, College Now went above and beyond with responding quickly and with details,” she says.

Spotlight: Student loan forgiveness

Linda Cox* is a proud graduate of an Ivy League university and eventually went on to obtain her master’s and medical degrees. With her years of postsecondary education, Linda and her husband racked up $300,000 in student loan debt. They were overwhelmed by the insurmountable and accumulating debt, but with patience, persistence and expertise, College Now helped Linda get nearly all of the debt forgiven through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) plan last year. * not real name

ADVOCACY

Students from lowincome backgrounds often face policies that fail to adequately address their needs. College Now supports the advocacy work of NCAN that addresses key federal policy priorities. As part of this, the maximum Pell grant for the 2023-24 school year saw its largest increase in a decade, up $500 to $7,395.

Thanks to the advocacy efforts of College Now and our collective impact partner, the Higher Education Compact, the Ohio College Opportunity Grant (OCOG) has seen an 82% increase. This boost raised the grant’s funding from $219 million to $400 million in the biennial state budget. Furthermore, the annual amount of the OCOG scholarship award was increased from $2,700 to $3,200 for the 2023-24 school year at a state university’s main campus and

from $4,200 to $4,700 at a private, non-profit higher educational institution; for the 2024-25 school year, the scholarship award has been increased to $4,000 at a state university’s main campus and $5,000 at a private, non-profit higher educational institution.

In 2022-23, Ohio’s public, four-year, instate postsecondary tuition and fees

alone were the nation’s 15th highest; two-year, instate postsecondary tuition and fees were 14th; and Ohio ranked 42nd in average funding for full-time college students. Strong need-based financial aid for students is critical to sustaining and growing a productive state and economy.

For the students I have personally supported, mothered, coached and dragged across the finish line, as well as for thousands of students that College Now serves, getting to and through college is a full-time job beyond the academics. I can say this because I have witnessed it and lived it.
