ABDOUL MCNAIR HIGH SCHOOL, CLASS OF 2020 CORNELL UNIVERSITY, CLASS OF 2024

At age 6, my life changed forever. My family and I had just arrived in New York City from Guinea. I remember when I left the subway station and saw huge skyscrapers. I saw thousands of people on the street and traffic that ran for I far as I could see. It was all new to me and it made me feel very anxious, but also excited for this new journey.

In the year leading up to our move, my family went on road trips to visit extended family in different cities around the country. In Guinea, road transportation was extremely difficult and frustrating. A road trip that would take about 3 hours in the United States took an entire day in Guinea. The highway was unpaved, it was only two lanes, and accidents were common. Help took a long time to come, prolonging this already lengthy trip. The highways in Guinea were terrible, and it was exhausting, even for an energetic six-year-old like myself.

Transportation issues cause serious problems across the continent of Africa, including challenges with attending school, dangerous accidents, and loss of economic revenue. Commerce in Guinea cannot thrive because businesses can't reliably transport goods around the country or internationally.

Transportation in Guinea was all I ever knew, so when we arrived in the United States, the consistency of roads and bridges intrigued me. I remember driving with my family from New York to Georgia and being amazed by the “spaghetti” highways. I was young, but I was fascinated by the exits and spurs that led people to different cities. As I got older, I wanted to study Civil Engineering. I hope to work in the United States for some time to gain experience. Ultimately though, I want to go back to my home country and improve our transportation systems.

My goal is to develop hyperloop stations in Africa. Hyperloop is a high-speed transportation system that rapidly transports people between cities, and even countries. The system includes a capsule-like vehicle inside a tube. Because the car is inside the tube, there is no air that will cause resistance to decrease its speed.

When there is a need to slow down or stop, the tube strategically opens to let air come in, causing the vehicle to slow down.

In Africa, there are enough natural resources to create the hyperloop. There also aren’t many developed cities that would create barriers for the project. In America, it would be much more complicated to build hyperloop stations because they would have to exist around cities. However, in Africa, the limited infrastructure would allow for us to develop the hyperloop with significantly fewer interruptions or issues.

I want to go back to Guinea so that my country can become financially stable. I believe with better highway infrastructure, companies would be willing to come to the country and do business. Trade would become more efficient and travel time would significantly decrease. Visiting family members in different cities wouldn't be so difficult anymore either. I want to create something that wouldn't just better my country but the entirety of Africa.

Cornell's motto, "I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study," is one of the reasons I want to attend Cornell. A university that values people from different backgrounds is important to me.

Engineers for a Sustainable World caught my eye because they aim to reduce poverty by improving

environmental sustainability worldwide. I want to help reduce poverty in Guinea and all of Africa. I see myself working with that organization. OpenLoop is an organization that drew me to Cornell. Even though it is not a Cornell-only team, I love how they have the goal of creating transportation for the future and how they worked together with people from different schools. It shows me Cornell students enjoy teamwork and for the dream I have, I must also.

COLLEGE TRIPS We were able to complete several inperson college visits this school year before COVID-19 shutdowns. These visits play a pivotal role in helping students understand what's possible and finding their best-fit college. Visits are fully immersive. Our students learn from our Collegians on campus, meet with admissions and financial aid reps, sit in on classes, eat in college cafeterias and even spend nights in on-campus dorms.

TRINITY COLLEGE, CLASS OF 2023 With a cumulative GPA of 3.72, Deion is a Presidential Scholar at Trinity. At the end of his freshmen year, he was awarded the FirstYear Bantam of the Year Award as well as recognized as a Powerful Male Leader on campus. He is planning to declare a double major in Sociology and Women & Gender Studies with a minor in Community Action. Identity and Activism are important to Deion and he hopes include both in his career post graduation. “I was personally raised by Black women who encouraged and inspired me and I want to give that back,� Deion explains.

Shaheedah

UNIVERSITY OF WEST GEORGIA, CLASS OF 2023 Shaheedah hit the ground running when she started at UWG. She has maintained a 3.8 GPA and works as a Peer Tutor with the Center for Academic Success. She has been recognized for her leadership and academic achievements both on and off campus.

Recently, she was awarded a Leadership Scholarship from Chickfil-A where she has worked for the past several years.

Kendell

SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY, CLASS OF 2021 Kendell has been an advocate and leader during his four years at Syracuse. He spends his time on campus as a peer educator, teaching fellow students about healthy relationships and sexuality, and as the Vice President and Keeper of Records for the Delta Beta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated.

Academically, Kendell has made Dean's List four times to date. He is currently wrapping up his Fashion Design major with a senior collection inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement.

Patience

HOWARD UNIVERSITY, CLASS OF 2020 Patience consistently made the Dean's List and Honor Roll throughout college and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Biology from Alabama A&M in 2020. While on campus, Patience also served as a student ambassador for the University, helped lead the National Society of Leadership and Success and was a member of Alabama A&M’s Health Honors Program. She also spent summers as an intern at Atlanta City Hall and was a mentor at GO Girl Empowerment Organization. Patience is now pursuing her Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree at Howard University.

Michael

BRANDEIS UNIVERSITY, CLASS OF 2022 Michael is a Math and Philosophy double major at Brandeis and tells us that the most recent semester was his best to date. Two of his favorite classes have been Infinity and Introduction to Proofs, which combine skills from both of his chosen disciplines. Michael stayed on campus last summer, working with a research team to analyze data, and is planning to attend graduate school after he finishes his four years at Brandeis.

B'Leaka

LAFAYETTE COLLEGE, CLASS OF 2023 B'Leaka is in her sophomore year at Lafayette and has been a community builder since the moment she got to campus. She has particularly enjoyed Economics, Government/Law and Computer Science courses. Outside of the classroom, B'Leaka has spent time singing with a student choral ensemble, holds a work study job and is a leader within the International Student Association.

COVID-19 RESPONSE On March 13th, our students attended their last in-person school day for the 2019-2020 school year.

COVID-19 spread throughout our communities, and our students' lives were turned upside down. High school students had to transition to virtual learning, college students were sent home from their campuses, many students and their parents lost jobs and others fought off the virus. Our families were incredibly resilient, and College AIM quickly mobilized to support any way that we could.

EMERGENCY FUND With the help of our amazing supporters, College AIM was able to offer emergency funding to help cover our students' and families' basic needs such as food, medicine, academic supports, travel, childcare and technology.
