A Critical Analysis of "Knowledge is Power"

1. Introduction

The claim of "Knowledge is power", made by Francis Bacon, has been universally well known. Originally, it was proposed to stress the importance of knowledge in science and an academic spirit because human were experiencing a major scientific revolution at that time and information technology is not as developed as now to spread knowledge. Now it has been recognised by a much wider range of fields. In order to better understand the conception of knowledge, it is also vital to distinguish knowledge from other similar conceptions. As mentioned above, there are too many aspects can be covered by knowledge and it is not surprising to find conceptions like data, information and wisdom have been frequently used interchangeably across academic journals and business practice. But they are different conceptions. Davenport and Prusak (1998) defined data as simple description of reality, information as data with purpose behind and knowledge as the idea that formed in minds after gaining information. To better illustrate the relationship among these conceptions, Skyrme and Amidon (1997) proposed a diagram known as "the Pyramid of Knowledge" (see figure 1). This distinction made here has significant implication in practice. Modern technology makes it possible for business to have access to tons of information instantly, but it does not necessarily mean they can gain knowledge that way. In Bradbury's, Fahrenheit 451, Guy Montag a Fireman, not to be confused with a firefighter, was forced to burn books. Using a kerosene spray gun or flamethrower, Montag would take the books and burn them. Although the books held a plethora of information, this lack knowledge lead to a dystopian society full of censorship, ignorant unlearned individuals, and technological advancements beyond those which we know of today. It was not until Montag stole a book that he had a change of heart. Censorship is a government, or other groups control of the information being circulated and presented in a society. Social media, news, radio and television, all of which a forms of communication and avenues of information used each day. Although, the information provided often seems valid and true, it has been, and will be censored to the furthest extent by those who monitor the things one presents to the outside world making it public information. Knowledge is Power.

Though this statement is often quoted, I believe that it will still be quoted for generations to come. Knowledge empowers one towards opportunity and growth, and I firmly believe that one who trusts in it will not fail in life. Experience and excellent pedagogy are the two ways through which one can amass it. These courses strengthened my basics and laid a very strong foundation in these fields while providing me with a background on the nuances of business technology. Choosing a myriad list of courses along with persistent hard work I could score above 80% in all of them. Being chosen to represent all my project teams and my participation in organizing college events had taught me to be a better team player with the ability to step up as a leader. I had also interned at NTPC to familiarize myself with a professional environment and this engendered a confidence in me.

A few of the programs I've been involved in include Onpoint Teen Board, FFA, Girl Talk, BETA club, creating ourschool's dance team, and many others. Their mission promotes a healthy lifestyle, guidance from peers and adult figures, stressing the importance of education, and is Christ based. If the statement "Knowledge is Power" is correct, then Franklin County has a power outage. Unlike an actual power outage, the solution to this type of issue does not require a call to the local electrical company. According to the state government of Tennessee, approximately, fifty–seven percent of all residents in Tennessee have a post–secondary education in 2014. Out of all the residents of Franklin County only forty–three percent have a post–secondary education. These numbers are thought to be on an exponential decline and will , in theory, be worse in the following years to come. Why are these numbers so miniscule?
