Summer 2016

Life is like a road you know where it's, other times you don't.This reminds me of my summer going into freshman year. For the last weeks of middle school there has been a lot of talk about high school and even ed tech. I concluded the year with good grades little did I know I had an active couple months ahead. starting high school wasn't the only new transition to make.
It was the last months of 8th grade and every incoming freshman was preparing themselves for high school. I'm not complaining, I finished the year with new friends. On the other hand I didn't see what the big deal was because high school is the same thing just more privileges. Cell Phones, gum and food really. In other words the year ended smoothly. It was super...show more content... For one week in july, Myself and others had to endure drumline camp. Anyone that is close to me knows that I am a super anxious person. There were a ton of things I was overthinking about. obviously I never had any sort of experience with anything marching band related. In the august swelter, which felt like a thousand degrees, we had SMB camp my cymbals were hot flying saucers. That week, I thought was miserable and I seriously thought about quitting. Looking back now That was such a senseless idea because some of the highlights of my vacation happend at camp. By the time school rolled around the freshman were getting the hang of things and our halftime shows got better and better. As if my first year of drumline wasn't new enough I decided to join golf. I jumped into the deep end of the pool.
Earlier I said I had an active break, but during my free time I decided to join the golf team. The only golf experience i've ever had was putt–putt. Surely enough I got some old, tired clubs and started hitting the driving range. I liked golfing because the team was limited with a whopping 10 girls. Practices were real chill you'd just go out and play 4 holes after school it was kinda relaxing. I liked the noise your club makes when you hit the tee, that clink! Again I thought next year I wasn't gonna do golf but i'm starting to
As I made the walk into my first hour, geometry, my first day of high school; I thought to myself I would never pass this class, I am a freshman in a sophomore class and I have not been taught any of this before. Nervous and scared about the rest of the day and how hard my classes would be, I looked forward to a year of low grades and failed assignments. However, this was not the case, high school classes were much different then what I had thought. Many teachers were easy on students, gave less homework than I had expected and were lenient on the homework assignments. Much different than what I had expected, I have flown through high school with ease and superior grades. On the other hand, as I begin to take college courses, I have learned that those grades in High School were much easier to obtain and were of less value. High Schools have made it easier to get higher grades, and that in turn, will affect my grades in college.
It can be seen strongly at my High School, Oologah High, that students have gotten lazier and parents still expect teachers to hand out better grades. When enrolling and selecting classes; students have the option to select easier, less demanding classes, yet are still rewarded with high grades. Now, instead of taking classes that reward hard work and prepare students for the future, they are able to pass easy classes and receive better scores. Those students who take more rigorous courses are slated with more work, tougher assignments, and Get

In high school, I had to advocate for myself; if I wanted something I made sure my teachers and counselors knew my hopes and dreams for the future. As a senior, I decided that my AP Photography class was not benefiting my education and I was not becoming a better photographer or student through the class. I knew that my creativity would be better used in an AP Ceramics setting. So, in order to get my classes switched I had to be my own advocate for the well–being of my education. I visited my counselor weekly until my class was finally changed and I was in a class I truly enjoyed. Though I am aware that my high school is an exception to the typical public–school education, it is important to note that not all students are uninterested in learning. In the year, I was placed in AP Ceramics, I learned countless skills including, wheel throwing, soldering copper, glaze mixing, and even determination and persistency. So, in my high school career I learned both critical thinking as well as vocational skills to create a well–rounded education.

I have been thinking about high school since was young. I thought it was so far away and now I am ready to graduate middle school and go to high school. This got me thinking about college. I realize that I need to find a high school that will help me succeed and reach my goal of going to college. I need a program that will help me find new things that will interest me. As an 8th grader getting ready to go into high school I was looking at applications and, I came across Lake View High School and I was intrigued. As I read on I was satisfied with what I read because I know that this program will help me succeed in high school and college. Knowing that, I really want to be a part of this school. Lake View is a HOME, which represents the four core values of: Honor, Ownership, Mastery, andEducation. At Lake View I will be contributing to these core values, but the one that I will be concentrating on is Education. Education is something that I need before anything, before college, before high school. Education has me thinking about what I want to be when I grow up, what kind of professional. When someone asks me "What do you want to be when you grow up?" I would want to have a response and that...show more content...
I want to learn new things that interest me. I want to be able to realize my goals. I have recently discovered my love for reading. I hope to be able to learn strategies that will help make me a better reader as well as a better writer. If I contribute to the core value of education, I know I will succeed at that skill with the new strategies that I will learn. With HOME, I have an opportunity to contribute to all of the values: Honor, Ownership, Mastery, and Education. This school will give me different aspects of education. I have many goals in life, in high school and college, so being able to be part of Lake View HOME, I will be contributing to the core

The High School Experience
The high school experience is something that will forever dominate the psyche of most American adults. It was an unforgettable time of fun, rebel–rousing, summer loves and parties. It was a time of warm summer days at the pool and chilly autumn nights, watching the football team and wondering were the party was going to be that night. School dances and hotel parties. Seems like all I can remember are the good times. High School is a very emotional time for many teens and everything matters. The insidious problems that I had to face are but a smudge on my memory, things like too much homework, zits, mean people, gossip, and algebra. The social atmosphere that permeated every aspect of high school could...show more content...
"The Breakfast Club" characterizes this phenomena by depicting the "jock, the brain, the basketcase, the princess, and the juvenile delinquent". In the movie each character is representative of the social class to which they belong. The "jock" signifies the sports star that can do no wrong, but the movie character bullies another boy and when caught all he received was detention. Although on the other hand the delinquent who is a dope smoking, foul mouthed punk, received the same punishment for talking back to a teacher. Administrators and teachers are very quick to meet out severe punishment to those students that they have deemed worthless, while good kids get a slap on the wrist. The movie's jock is placed in Saturday detention, instead of being suspended, so that he may wrestle in an upcoming tournament; a case in which Hollywood makes an accurate depiction. This is the "holding of power" that Wehlage and Rutter spoke about in their study, High School and Beyond. Students who receive better treatment seem to do better in school when subjected to "an orderly environment, a committed and caring faculty, and an emphasis on academic pursuits"(Nieto,100).
The movie goes on to compare and contrast the "princess" and the "basketcase", both seventeen year old girls who endeavor male attention, yet one is the cool crowd prom queen and the other is the loser, burnout crowd weirdo. Brian, the narrating brain, is a

The seconds simultaneously ticked by as a haze devoured my focus preceding the upcoming competition. My eyes strained to see the clock hands plunging forward as I anxiously stood awaiting the moment when the proctor would announce my name, and invite me into the nearby room. Sweat began to glaze the palm of my hand that patted down my rather puffy hair that was a result of the humidity present in Orlando, Florida. My heart skipped a beat, I glanced once more at my notecards, and strode into the room I was designated to compete in. The National Leadership Conference for BPA, Business Professionals of America, left a dramatic impact on my life. In addition to nationals, regional and state competitions taught me a lesson that...show more content...
I was like a bird learning to fly. I didn't really know what I was doing but I tried my best. I presented to the best of my abilities and hoped for the best. The day came to an end and that award ceremony was about to start. I decided that I wouldn't be disappointed if I didn't place, and reasoned that I had three years left in high school and would have a better chance of winning as a more experienced upper classmen. Once again, I was using being a freshman as an excuse. Unexpectedly, I placed first in both of my competitions and qualified for state. During this pivotal moment my eyes were opened to what I could accomplish. I suddenly started to expect more out of myself. I was going to state and wouldn't be knocked out without a fight. During state I took full advantage of the opportunities provided and tried to excel in every aspect placed before me. Unlike regionals, state was huge: the competitive environment was intense, the atmosphere was exciting, and the diverse emotions could be felt. The entire state of Idaho was represented by BPA's 'cream of the crop'. Once again, I did not have high expectations of myself. I was thrilled I had the opportunity to participate at BPA's state competition and felt honored to be among Idaho's best. After agonizing over my competitions and presenting to the best of my abilities, unexpectedly I found myself in the top ten of both events. Adrenaline filled my veins as I

High School Sports In high school many kids often choose not to participate in extra curricular activities saying that there pointless or that only a certain type of person would do something like play football, or join the chess club. While this type of thinking may get some people through school and through life, can it really be looked at as being a healthy lifestyle? Today sports have proven to be a healthy outlet for students, in dealing with stress in the classroom at home and among their peers. The "dumb jock" stereotype we've all heard it used before and for some of us have even been called it. However in recent surveys across the United States has found that student–athletes grades are generally higher than...show more content...
As far as athletes on the field a great many lessons are often learned there and one of the biggest lessons is sportsmanship. For any sports played teamwork is often times essential for winning. It also allows for a person to become more confident in their own abilities allowing them to become more proud and not ashamed of what they can or cannot do. It allows players to build bonds among their teammates and while this maybe be one of the main creators of the "jocks hang out with jocks" stereotype it is only because athletes feel a connection to someone that is going through the same time of training and emotions that sports tend to create. Sportsmanship teaches a person the value of working together in groups and allows the player to learn how to adjust to situations that he or she may not agree with. The work ethic sportsmanship creates is also carried off the field as well into the school and more importantly the working environment, because we all know that in our lifetimes we are going to have to work with someone that we do not like or agree with. And having the ability to be able to work through a problem which sportsmanship can do allows for an easier job experience. Athletes also tend to be generally much more healthier than non–athletes, do to the type of training and experiences they are put through for their respective sports. Athletes

High School and College are two seriously different places where many different types of reading and writing skills are put to the test. In high school, one may have been taught to construct the basic five paragraph essay those paragraphs included, an introduction, 3 body paragraphs and conclusion. Since elementary we learn to write our papers that include an introduction/three–supporting–points/conclusion strategy and we should definitely. In my time that I have been attending Fresno state I have experience 3 out of my 5 professor to forget that concept and explore new writing beyond the 5 paragraph essay. In college students are encouraged to break out of their comfort zone and break that 5 paragraph essay. When it comes to college students must learn to always keep an opened mind to discover different and new writing skills. Although we have been taught this basic 5 paragraph essay all those 12 years of school, one should not stay in the comfort zone and stick to writing in this format, one should expand, explore and develop skills needed to write college level essays. The placing of a thesis statements is key in writing an essay. Inhigh school one is usually trained to included a thesis statement, somewhere at the end of the very first paragraph. A thesis college statement all depends on choosing where it sounds best and where it makes the most sense. In college an argument tends to be the thesis, this allows the reader to see how we feel about the topic. A thesis statement allows the reader a little glimpse of what the writer is going to discuss throughout their essay. Research papers in high school might have involved some type of book report format, one just informing the readers with facts about the topic, once again using the 5 paragraph method. High school students usually collect information from bing, google, yahoo and etc. Argument based paper are the type of papers mostly written in college. During college writing one goal is to collect sufficient amount of evidence that helps you make a point and prove it as well. Some college papers require citing reliable sources comparing sources making sure they are all proving the same point. The internet is such a huge tool that college students use, but

There was a point in my time where I enjoyed school and took pleasure in attending school and that was elementary. Those were the best school years of my life, having nothing to care about, the school lunch was unbelievably amazing and we had recess. Middle school was manageable but was also beginning to become tough because the classes were becoming difficult. As we approach the beginning of ourhigh school career, parents and teachers always tell us students that it's the best four years of our life, which in my case I did not find high school fascinating or enjoyable. I found high school to be very stressful, overwhelming and not easy, understanding that the next four years of my life will be filled with obstacles and challenges that I will face. I knew that I would have challenges with my courses, but I did not think I would have trouble with my emotions such as feeling depressed, sad, or that I would cry every other day, but to some teachers or parents thought it was normal for teenagers because we are going through different phases of our life. My freshman year was probably the best year of my high school year but I did face many challenges. I was immature, did not obey my teachers, always getting in some sort of trouble. I was carefree, fun, outgoing and had decent memories whether they were good memories or bad memories. Towards the middle of my freshman year I found out that I had Hyperthyroidism, and was quite confused and did not understand what it meant. As I

High school students on the job
We spend four years of our lives attending high school. Going through high school is supposed to prepare us for college and "the real world." Throughout these four years we begin to better understand our choices for college majors, but we don't get presented with the financial and time struggle that we will face. College costs money, along with everyday living. Whenattending college we become more independent and are faced with the problem of coming up with money and finding a balance between time for work and school. Though it may seem like working through high school is a bad idea, it could better prepare students for "the real world."

It would be much more difficult to learn these things when one is dependent on themselves. It raises the risk of struggles with money.
There are many students that have the ability to stay very focused on their educational goals. These students tend to do very well academically and do not need a lot of stimuli to help them get moving. There are other students who are not in the same boat. Some students become very frustrated with the day–to–day routine of going to school. These students tend to benefit from having the option of working outside of school. They begin to see that working hard does pay off. The feeling of satisfaction they receive may motivate them to work harder at succeeding in school. They will understand that though it is a lot of hard work, the more effort they put into their education, the better off they will be. They will get higher paying jobs that suit their character if they continue to work hard through high school and go to college.
A student's first job may not be glorious. Chances are it will be at a fast food restaurant or department store. A student's first job will bring a self of satisfaction, but will also help to bring to a student's attention that this is not what they want to be doing for the rest of their lives. If a student may not be doing very well in school,
My mind is all a blur as I wake up at Paloma Valley High School, having no clue how I ended up there. Naturally, I scavenge for food and water in the cafeteria and I'm able to gather five cans of food and five pints of water. As I walk around the once crowded halls of the school, I see a group of people. They introduced themselves as Jaden, Xavier, and Michael Jay, and we call ourselves The Freuds. We start talking about what happened, and I begin to remember that there was a zombie outbreak. Having nothing better to do, we look for any useful things that may come in handy along the road.
I stumble upon an overabundance of medical supplies and luckily I'm first aid certified. Our group continues to explore the campus and Jaden finds a horse, and names him Dexter. We also find a girl named Carra who had said that she ran away from her group that called themselves the Humanistics. So now we know it isn't just us, and there are other people out there. Jay mentions that he is an Olympian runner and swimmer, which will be helpful when he'll need to race someone potentially. Another person, Hailey, joins our group and unfortunately eats all of our food.
Tired and exhausted, we all lay down and go to sleep (except for Jay), thinking to myself that things will take a turn for the better... Waking up to the panicked voices of the others in my group, I find out that all of our stuff is gone and Jay is too. Now we have NO food and NO water, nothing to defend ourselves

Panic, anxiety, lost, confused, this is what I felt as I arrived on campus. I am sixteen, a junior in high school, and this was my first day attending a college course. My expectations of what the campus, teachers, and people were like, was nothing compared to what I ended up experiencing. On Tuesday, August 24th, I began the next step towards my future. I arrived at 12:20pm, my first class was Introduction to Psychology with Professor Sample at 12:45pm. My palms were sweating, my stomach was turning, my mind was racing. This is really happening, I kept thinking to myself. Luckily, I had two common faces to embark on this journey with me. My best friend since middle school, blonde, taller, Noelle Stevens. Along with an individual I have come to know and be close with over the past year, Ocean Klein. As we were pulling into the parking lot, I noticed many differences between Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) and Licking ValleyHigh School, almost instantly. My eyes were pealed to the huge and colorful building. They were nothing like my simple high school building I attend. The very next item that drew my attention was, the way individuals were dressed. Girls looked comfortable in the heat. At licking valley high school, the dress code is very restrictive. Bottoms can be no shorter than four inches above the knee, shirts must cover shoulders and bra straps, and there are to be no holes showing skin in tops and above the knee of bottoms. On the other hand, at Central Ohio

Everyone has heard or been told, "high school is what you make of it." High school is in fact what you make of it, but it is also the time of great change in everybody. Entering grade nine you still feel like a kid, your post–secondary and career choices are far from top priority. However, by grade twelve we become more mature and grow into young adults. Personally looking back to my grade nine self and comparing her to my grade twelve self of today, I am able to see changes in my character, my athletics and my goals. There are many aspects within my personal character in which have changed since entering grade nine. One of these aspects is my time management skills. When I first started out in grade nine, I used to rush home and rush...show more content...
Over four years, I have made, as well as, lost friends. We all need to grow and mature and sometimes others just do not want to follow that path with you and you end up growing apart. Further changes can be seen in my athletics. Although this may seem a mute point to mention, my sports are part of my life and today are part of my career choice. Therefore, my sports have obviously impacted me. In grade nine, I was curling seven days a week on multiple teams and different leagues. I joined the school team and ended the season winning Female MVP. In grade nine I was aiming towards going to Provincials for curling while in grade twelve I now aim towards placing higher than bronze in the 2010 Summer Games for archery. I do not have much time for school sports with my archery outside of school taking off and I rarely get time to go shoot some rocks. Archery is my main focus in sports right now. Along with my goals in sports changing, my goals in post–secondary matters as well as career choices have changed. Today I am looking at applying to either Canadore College or Brock University, where four years ago all I knew was that I wanted to attend college and move out. Now I realize staying home would save me a lot of money. As well, I am more open to looking at both university and college courses, like Brock, as their program I wish to take is said to be excellent. In grade nine I was jobless and did not truly Get more content

Milestone 3: Motivation For High School Students

With so many of life many failure attempts to succeed in life, we see those individuals that have dropped out of school and feel that their life now seems meaningless. Their determination or will power wasn't strong, and they had no one to push them forward to want to be a better person or succeed in life. Some students today feel that all they have to do is just attend school just because of their parents' wishes for them to receive a diploma. Some feel that classes are boring and frustrating and a waste of time and energy. Why do students of today feel this way?...show more content...
Now how can you learn if you're not interested? This is when the teacher should consider providing fun and games, praise, and love within the classrooms, making the classroom exciting and more interesting.
Before entering the classrooms, teachers should sit and study each individual student and learn their likes and dislikes. They should know what particular student need help in what particular subject. Some students need more help in other subjects than other students. This is when teachers should consider making their lesson plans focusing on subject matters that are current and relevant to high school students, implementing cooperative learning strategies with their lesson plans while students show off their talents. If students are demonstrating what they have learned in a skit, they tend to learn more positively. When providing fun and game within the classrooms, the students are excited about attending class
because they already know something very eventful is going to take place in that particular class. Not only are they learning they are having fun while doing so. They are able to act out some of their personal talents, giving others a sense of who they really are, and what some of their greater skills may be. As acknowledge in the article "How to Motivate High School Students," "By allowing students the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge in a way that appeals to their strengths, you're giving them a chance
