Essay– What is Language? What is Literacy? How are they different?
Teachers must have a sound knowledge and appreciation for language and literacy to be able to make the two concepts a valuable part of a student's curriculum.
This essay will explore the importance of language and literature in a students learning and how they assist in enhancing their development. Most importantly the similarities and differences will be distinguished so that the relationship between the two can be understood. Defining both language and literacy as different entities, but also closely linked concepts, allows readers to bridge together their affiliation when taught to children in a classroom environment. Vygotsky believed that by the time a child enters school, they use language not only for communicative purposes, but also for thinking and planning (Daniels at el, 2007 pg.138).
Literacy is control of secondary use of language. It can be seen as being able to apply language to "use", "function" and "control". We all use language everyday; however literacy is the act of applying our knowledge of language. We use language to produce a range of modes for different purposes and audiences. Literacy is used to develop language and use it, for practical and purposeful situations and work. There is little use for possessing the knowledge of language if we cannot use and apply it in our everyday lives to gain knowledge and understanding (Kervin 2010).
As educators, we must be aware that our knowledge of literacy and how we convey it to our children is an essential and ongoing process that is constantly adapting. The importance of applying the student's knowledge of language to literacy is crucial as it plays a crucial part in a child's education, development and life skills. If a child cannot apply their language skills to literacy they will find it
Scientific literacy
Introduction and audience
When talk about science, perhaps majority of us think it is less relative with real life. However, as society developed, science encompassed us everywhere. This situation forces everyone to acquire the ability to learn and understand science. Some may think that, scientific literacy is what a scientist should have and nothing about normal people, however it is just too narrow. Look around the surroundings of us, everything is conned with science. Also, we encounter science in our normal life as well. Therefore, the ability to acquire and understand science is necessary and important, which is called scientific literacy. What were they made of, would that influence their health? Finally, we made the decision, it was a deceptive advertising and we wouldn't purchase it(problem solved). This is the one typical example process of using scientific way to solve problems.
So far, we could tell scientific literacy is useful, but does it necessary for us? The next part is telling why it is necessary and the basic science knowledge to acquire it.
Science knowledge is necessary
As the rapid development of science and technology, everyone in society is required to acquire higher scientific literate skill. What if one doesn't acquire scientific literacy, not only he/she could not engage in science study or research, but would encounter difficulties in normal life. For example, when we want to look for a book in the library, it would be so simply if we check it online, copy the index of the book and then go find it directly. However, people who don't have the ability to acquire computer skill would have difficult. Therefore, scientific literacy is necessary in contemporary life.

My literacy experience
What does it mean knowing how to read and write. I take literacy skill very seriosly that will help me in the future. I know such skills don't come easy, it requires hard work, sleepless night. The reason why I go to school is to make mistakes, correct them and not to repeat them again. I always improve my skills through curiosity to learn something new, not being able to read and write would keep me in a darkness without seeing beautiful things that surround me.

In order to improve my literary skills I have to be self –motivated , by choosing the books I'm interested in, writing the stories and essays that I like. But the problem is that there is more being literate than writing and writing , now there is more requirements in literacy such as digital. Digital literacy is the ability to use information and communication technology to find evaluate create and communicate information, requires both which is technical skills and reading skills. Without reading comprehension skills, any kind of reading will be challenging at in life. Increasing your writing skills will allow you to express yourself clearly in anything from personal emails, to business reports , memos and etc. All the study skills that you worked so hard will benefit you in personal and professional life.
In the world that is becoming more technology driven on daily bases, literacy skills are growing increasingly important to my future career. I'm as a second language speaker who had to submerge myself and literally learn a new language, new culture and new traditions. Most of the employers out there put all of their information online and to be able to apply for that job, you have to use a computer. That applies to submitting your resume as well. The days of going from business to business, filling out applications and turning in resumes are long gone. Nowadays when you go to a business to apply for a job, they tell you to go online to their website and apply there. Being digitally literate also relates to the everyday things that we do such as reading the newspaper or a magazine or even writing a letter. Most newspapers and magazines can be found online today and that can make things easier for us in our day to day lives. With that technology, we no longer have to carry around some giant newspaper or even a magazine. We have the ability to put them on our computers of even an iPad and access them from anywhere that you have internet access. Plus having this technology allows us to be able to search for certain articles without having to scan through an entire newspaper or magazine. Along with having the ability to read newspapers and magazines digitally, those companies are also adding more pictures and links that just add that much more to the stories. At this point in my life I find myself in an interesting predicament regarding my attitudes toward reading and writing; more so towards reading. Years ago I used to love reading books for pleasure but nowadays I find myself reading things that little to no effort to digest. This includes the very basic posts on facebook expressing one's opinion on something or articles and threads on reddit discussing topics I find intriguing. You can feed the mind as much as you want and it will never get full of reading. Sadly, I'm not the same person that I was. I guess you could say it's part of growing up. It never really was intentional but it's just the way how it ended up. On the other hand my attitudes toward writing are very different. First let me say that deep down I truly do not like to write. I myself don't personally like to write for leisure or pleasure but rather I write because I believe it is one of the most important aspects of being able to communicate with those around you, both personally and professionally. To put differently, my attitude towards writing is that I write because I need to write and survive in the world around me. I write because I have to, not because I want to. Hopefully this somewhat makes sense. To better explain let me make a comparison. When I am assigned a writing assignment or I am writing because the action is being forced upon me I find myself not enjoying the process and overall the end result is subpar. The perfect example of this would be my junior year in high school when I was enrolled in AP english literature. I dreaded the majority of the class simply because there was so much writing involved in the entire course and therefore I was constantly writing just to get a grade. Literacy plays a huge role in my daily life. Every single day I read and write. Whether it's writing an email or reading a text message, class assignment, discussion board, etc. My literacy journey is unique because I have had different experiences. As a result, this is how my literacy journey has let me to be the reader that I am. I define literacy as being able to express my thoughts and emotions. I know everyone has different opinions and emotions. Therefore, everyone will write differently and read in a different pace. Also, everyone likes different types of books, for example fiction or nonfiction. As a result, everyone's literacy journey is unique. Everyone has a different definition when it comes to literacy which is what makes it special. Some prefer to read and others prefer to write. It all depends on personal preference. A book I clearly remember is the book I read in 6th grade. I saved up my lunch money to buy it from the book fair. There was a lot of book I could not choose but my teacher helped me picked one. The book was torn on the edges. It had an off–white cover with faded writing. I remember it smelling like my pumpkin spice candle I had in my room. I also remember the book being small and easy to carry. I loved the size of it because I could take it anywhere to read. There were times where I would stay in the classroom instead of going out to play with my classmates. I still have the book but now its dusty and covered in highlighter and writing. I first understood reading was important when I had to take a reading test in elementary. I was told the test would determine whether I would move on to the next grade level. That was when I realized I had to take reading important. I didn't like having to read 4 different stories, but I knew I had to try my best to pass. The test results took forever to come in which made it even scarier. Once my teacher told me I had passed I felt a huge relief. Ever since I have never doubted the importance of reading.
