Dear Friends,

This past year was especially productive as our CJFS Board and Staff evaluated how we could better serve our community. We engaged in a Strategic Planning process to analyze how we could provide more of our mission and broaden our impact. A dedicated strategy team discussed goals, objectives and metrics. We also received input from many of you in our Jewish and greater Birmingham community. Through the process it was clear that we have an excellent reputation for providing high quality service, but we can improve the marketing of our programs and reach more members of our community who can benefit from our services.

CJFS is working with marketing professionals who are helping us boost awareness of our specialized programs and reach more potential clients. In addition, our goal is to strengthen our relationships with our partners, advocates, clients and donors. Identifying priorities, optimizing efficiencies and communicating consistently will help us reach our objectives.

At CJFS we are fortunate to have a passionate, committed and hard-working Executive Director and Staff. Assisting our staff are devoted volunteers who make many of our programs possible. These caring people truly take Tikkun Olam, Repairing the World, to heart. Each day they enrich the quality of life for our clients and help them remain independent.

Critical to our daily operations are the grants we receive from The Birmingham Jewish Federation and Foundation, United Way, Navigate and many other foundations. Of course, you, our generous donors, provide the support which enables CJFS to make an enormous impact for those in need in our community. The CJFS Staff, Board and Volunteers greatly appreciate your commitment to our agency and mission.

CJFS CARES

Caring for Adults with Respite, Enrichment, and Socialization is an activities-based program that offers cognitive stimulation, physical exercise and social interaction for people living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias while providing their caregivers a much-needed break.

CARES depends on dedicated, trained volunteers who are a vital part of creating a community of friendship and fellowship. In addition to respite, the program offers two support groups a week for caregivers to share their experience and learn new strategies for managing dementia behaviors and coping with stress.

In 2023, CARES provided more than 5800 hours of respite care and 500 hours of caregiver support.

Outreach

CJFS Outreach Programs grew and flourished in 2023. One of our most popular volunteer opportunities, Senior Grocery Initiative (SGI) is a partnership between CJFS, the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama and the Junior League of Birmingham (JLB). Thanks to volunteer assistance from JLB and our committed CJFS volunteers, the program delivers shelf-stable food and produce to the homes of low-income older adults each month supporting food stability. In 2023, SGI expanded, delivering more than 25,000 pounds of nutritious food. Additionally, through collaborations with JLB, Jewish Women’s Philanthropy and Young Jewish Philanthropists we provided special boxes of other costly household items such as detergent, storage bags, paper towels and toothpaste.

Other Outreach Highlights:

• JFF-BHM, our collaboration with the Jewish Fertility Foundation, offered emotional support and financial assistance to families facing infertility and community education to raise awareness of and sensitivity to their journeys.

• Honor Our Parents Jewish senior outreach hosted monthly Shabbat Services at the LJCC with local clergy, touching over 90 older adults.

• CJFS hosted a talkback session on mental health and aging at the screening of “Nathan-ism” at the Sidewalk Jewish Film Festival.

Senior Solutions

Senior Solutions provides guidance and support to older adults and their families as they address the 3P’s of aging: planning care, problem solving & peace of mind. CJFS Care Managers connect families to resources, provide emotional support, facilitate difficult conversations and offer expertise in planning for the challenges of aging.

The Esther Schuster Personal Care Program, a component of Senior Solutions designed expressly for low-income seniors, enables clients to remain in their homes by assisting with tasks that are physically difficult and increase the risk of falling such as bathing, laundry and meal preparation.

In 2023, 92% of Senior Solutions clients remained living independently in the community and 94% reported improved quality of life. For those who needed to move to a higher level of care, CJFS was there to assist with the transition.

13

Counseling

The licensed therapists at CJFS provide confidential counseling to people of all ages addressing challenges such as depression, anxiety, relationship problems, grief and loss, divorce, trauma and more.

Meeting in person or virtually, CJFS counseling staff help clients develop tools to improve their mental health and well-being.

Transportation

The wheelchair-accessible Buz-A-Bus continues to operate at full capacity, providing affordable doorto-door transportation for older and disabled adults.

The Just Like Family program features escorted transportation to medical appointments for those who require more assistance. Together, these transportation programs enable riders to remain independent by providing access to healthcare, food, recreation, socialization and more. In 2023 over 3600 rides were provided — including free rides for vision care appointments thanks to a grant from ITN America.
