The group met with The Hon. Jason Clare MP in his Chambers albeit via Zoom as he battled COVID seamlessly. We spoke with his chief of staff and also The Hon. Stephen Jones MP Federal Member for Whitlam and Shadow Assistant Treasurer and Shadow Minister for Financial Services and Superannuation. Short of time, he agreed with Jason to both be included in a later date meeting to discuss housing shortages, affordable housing and plans to provide options for people to get on the ladder rather than allow preserved superannuation to be pledged against owner occupied homes.

We hit the cafeteria for a group lunch then headed into a compelling Q & A. After a moment of memorial, we listened about Floods in Northern NSW and lower QLD including help, resources and potentially a privileged postcodes scandal much like the 12 LGA. The Ukraine, our sanctions and our lethal aid. We heard about 60,000 outstanding compensation claims for Australian Veterans, and watched the eruption of the room as every person stood for a rapid resolution.
The Dinner guests were The Hon. David Coleman MP whose passion for mental health issues was humbling. The Hon. Ed Husic hosted us with talks on a vast array of topics prompted by our members, even promising to visit Corporate Partner Hope and Care's Life Skills Centre in Western Sydney. An Albanese Labor Government will deliver a better deal for small business, provide certainty to the small business community in times of crisis, ensure they are paid on time, and cut unnecessary red tape and transaction fees.
Small business is the backbone of the Australian economy and has been taken for granted by the Morrison Government for too long.
The COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to serious bushfires and now floods across large parts of Australia, has had a significant impact on small businesses across the country.
A lack of federal leadership has compounded the anxiety felt by small business owners, eroding confidence and certainty about the future.
Over the past six months, the states alongside small business have pleaded with Scott Morrison to provide additional support whilst facing ongoing crisis.
Labor will deliver a targeted plan to give small business the confidence they need coming out of the pandemic and recovering from bushfires and floods. It will also provide support for small business so they are no longer left in the lurch during in times of crisis.
Labor will not let small business suffer in the same way Scott Morrison and the Liberals have throughout the last six months and will make sure they never have to go it alone.
Labor’s better deal for small business will:
Guarantee that a Labor Government will consider the specific needs of small businesses in times of crisis giving the confidence and certainty to grow and plan for the future.
Ensure small businesses are paid on time to sustain growth across the economy with a mechanism to ensure payment within 30 days.
Drive a genuine collaboration with small businesses and government to reduce the time small businesses spend doing taxes.
Draw on Labor’s history of working with unions, workers and industry to deliver better outcomes with settings that are simpler, more accessible, and fair.
Reduce small business transaction costs at the point of payment with a clear timeline for implementing least cost routing. This could save businesses up to $804 million a year in merchant fees.
These measures are targeted at making it easier for small business to bounce back from the ongoing pandemic and recovering from the bushfires and floods which have ravaged parts of Australia.
These commitments from Labor complement our plans to:
Protect small businesses from scams, bringing together law enforcement, regulators, banks and telcos to share real-time data about emerging threats.
Open the door to more opportunities for small business procurement by using the purchasing power of government.
Support young entrepreneurs to start micro-businesses with a start-up year.
Tackle crippling small business skills shortages with Free TAFE, more university places and skills in schools.
Labor’s better deal for small business is our commitment to the 2.4 million small business and the millions working in them across Australia that Labor is the party of small business and has a plan for securing their economic growth and supporting aspiration.

This year's NSW Small Business Month was a huge success, despite the challenges of floods and the ongoing pandemic. Over 600 activities were held during March across the State and online.
Small businesses were offered opportunities as varied as learning how to grow their online customer base, marketing and branding tips, building a mentally healthy workplace and help with tendering for government contracts. It was also a valuable opportunity for small businesses in many regional areas to get together, network and collaborate.
NSW Minister for Small Business and Fair Trading Eleni Petinos said: "Events conducted across the State as part of Small Business Month were designed by business for business. I believe this made all the difference in ensuring a successful month-long festival of support for small business."
If you haven't already, please don't forget to complete the official attendee survey. This data is equally important to us in measuring the success and reach of the program, and promoting the next Small Business Month.

SafeWork NSW is adopting a new industry safety standard as part of its sustained regulatory efforts to address silicosis.
The national Code of Practice – Managing the risks of respirable crystalline silica from engineered stone in the workplace came into force in NSW on 25 February 2022.
Minister for Small Business and Minister for Fair Trading Eleni Petinos said SafeWork has been focused on this issue for a number of years and the new code plays an important role in stopping workers developing silicosis. “Silicosis is a serious and debilitating lung disease that can be fatal,” Ms Petinos said.
“The Occupational Lung Diseases in Australia 2006-2019 Report highlighted a substantial increase in engineered stone workers contracting silicosis but NSW plans to reverse this trend and prevent workers getting sick from breathing in the harmful dust on the job.
“With regulatory reform and compliance activities supporting the adoption of the Code, employers and workers will now have a clear understanding of how to safely cut, grind, polish and clean up when working with engineered stone products.”
The code also provides guidance on regular air and health monitoring for workers, including lung screening.
SafeWork inspectors recently completed more than 900 compliance visits to 250 engineered stone businesses in NSW as part of a broader five-year program targeting silica exposure across engineered stone fabrication workplaces, construction and infrastructure worksites.
“We are seeing improvements in compliance and this code will help to support businesses to understand their duties and implement safe work practices to protect workers,” Ms Petinos said.
“It’s incredibly important for businesses and their workers to know what hazards exist in their workplace and how to eliminate or manage them.
“It is important to always use adequate ventilation, wet cutting, on-tool dust extraction when polishing and grinding. Wear fit-tested face masks, and clean-up using water and class M or H vacuum cleaners,” Ms Petinos said.
Businesses and workers can attend an educational webinar eventbrite.com.au/e/engineered-stone-code-of-practice-webinar-tickets270046545487 about the new code and access easy to use resources, including translated guidance materials.
The new code can be viewed here: safework.nsw.gov.au/engineeredstone-code

NSW small businesses and not-for-profits (NFP) affected by the severe weather and floods in February and March 2022 can now apply for up to $50,000 in government support.
Premier Dominic Perrottet said the Flood Disaster Recovery Small Business Grants would provide a much needed lifeline to small businesses hard hit by the widespread flooding and the Government would endeavor to get money into bank accounts as quickly as possible.
“We know that Government support in times of disaster can be the difference that helps keep a business open. We will do everything we can to ensure the people and businesses hit by these floods get back on their feet,” he said.
“We understand the pressure that small businesses are facing and successful applicants should expect to see funds in their accounts within 510 business days.”
Treasurer Matt Kean said the grants could be used to cover the cost of clean-up and repairs or to restock and reopen.
“Small businesses are the backbone of our local communities. They are often the primary source of income for entire families and support the bulk of local jobs,” Mr Kean said.
“For some communities, the local petrol station is also the corner shop, so it is critical we support our businesses to get back on their feet as soon as possible. When we support our businesses, we support our residents, and we support our communities.
“Payments of up to $50,000 can go towards the cost of safety inspections, building repairs, cleaning equipment, materials needed to resume trade, disposing of debris and spoiled stock, or leasing temporary space.”
Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Victor Dominello said businesses could apply via the Service NSW website or by calling a Service NSW Business Concierge on 13 77 88.
“The grants are being delivered by Service NSW in partnership with Resilience NSW and the Commonwealth Government under a 50:50 costsharing arrangement,” Mr Dominello said.
“Please talk to a Service NSW Business Concierge who can talk you through the process.”
Businesses owners that have been affected by floods and severe storms can stay up to date with the latest support options on the Service NSW website.
Businesses that would like to be connected with support can register for a call back from a Business Concierge here, or call 13 77 88 for assistance.
Applications can be submitted at https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/apply- february-and-march2022-storm-and-flood-disaster-recovery-small-business-grant.
Applications will remain open until 30 June 2022.

The NSW Government has launched the Digital Individual Contractor Licence in the Service NSW app, allowing tradies to easily access their work licences and contractors and consumers to quickly check credentials.
Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Victor Dominello said after a successful trial of more than 1400 tradies the Digital Contractor Licence was now available free across the State for individual Contractor Licence holders who wanted to go digital.
“This is about a smart NSW making it easier for people to do business across the State and for consumers looking to check a tradie,” Mr Dominello said.
“Security is baked in to the digital licence which includes an animated NSW Government logo, auto-refreshing date and time, QR code that expires and reloads, and a Waratah hologram.
“But for those who want to keep using their existing card that will always be an option.
“And we have heard loud and clear from tradies during the trial that they also want access to digital Qualified Supervisor and Tradesperson Certificates and we are planning to roll these out in late April.”
The Digital Contractor Licence is the second trade licence and credential to be digitised following the launch of the Digital White Card in April 2021, which has more than 185,000 people using it in the Service NSW app.
Minister for Small Business and Fair Trading Eleni Petinos said the new licence app will strengthen consumer safeguards against prospective tradies.
“Digital contractor licences will make it convenient for consumers to assess the qualifications of a tradesman prior to entering into a contract,” Ms Petinos said.
“The Digital Contractor Licence is a quick and secure way for contractors to display their credentials on site and for consumers to check a licence when engaging a tradie.
“A digitised licence adds another layer of protection for consumers by allowing them to quickly check details such as name, date of issue and any conditions.
“This is a perfect case of a licensing regime keeping pace with modern technology, making it easier for tradies to do business while protecting consumers from dodgy scammers.”
Funded by the Department of Customer Service’s Digital Restart Fund, the NSW Government’s Licensing Program is working to digitise trade licences and create end-to-end licensing journeys with the aim of improving customer service, providing convenience and making compliance with legislation easier.
Customers can now add the Digital Contractor Licence in the Service NSW app, which is available to download from the Apple App Store or Google Play. It is currently available for individual contractor licence holders only and they will need a MyServiceNSW account.

The 2022-23 Commonwealth Budget has delivered a raft of measures that will further assist NSW small businesses to rebound after two challenging years.
Small Business Minister Eleni Petinos said that measures outlined in the Federal Budget complement NSW Government initiatives already assisting the 800,000 small businesses across the state.
“The Federal Budget delivers strong incentives and measures to help NSW small businesses look to the future whilst navigating current challenges posed by the pandemic, floods and cost of living,” Ms Petinos said.
“NSW small businesses will benefit from measures to improve their cash flow, reduce red tape and provide greater convenience with reporting and meeting their tax obligations.
“Tax incentives to invest in skills, training, digital and cyber security will allow small businesses to adjust their operations to meet the modern business landscape.”
Measures announced by the Federal Treasurer that will assist NSW small businesses include:
Additional tax deductions for digital uptake and training; Fuel excise cut by 50% saving 22.1 cents per litre; Lower tax instalments for pay-as-you-go (PAYG) and GST instalments for the 2022-23 income year; Changes to the PAYG system to improve small business cashflow;
Improvements to the reporting of taxable payments; Allowing small and medium businesses who manufacture, import and distribute in the alcohol and fuel sectors to lodge and pay excise and excise-equivalent customs duty on a quarterly basis from 1 July 2023.
