Status as of Spring 2022: Graduating High School Senior

As a former foster child, I believe that advocating for those who are in foster care is very important. Over the years, I have been able to travel to Tallahassee to in order to speak to dozens of senators in order to help advocate for a bill that would allow foster youth the chance to know their rights as a foster child. With the experience that gained my goal is to continue advocating for these foster youth to help provide them with the normalcy that they deserve. Also, I would like to thank my mom and all the people who have stood me since day one.

My mom, especially, is someone who I am grateful for. At the age young age of 10, my brother and I were dropped off at her house and she welcomed us with open arms.

Over the years, there were a multitude of ups and downs, but my foster mom, now my mom, was always there to push me to become a better person than who I was the day before. She always told me, "Byron... You don't have to be the smartest, you don't have to be the most athletic, but as long as you're the kindest person in the room you will be one more step closer in becoming the best version of yourself." This saying has always been with me and I believe it to be true. Much thanks my mom and the people who were introduced to me through her.

I'm passionate about our homeless situation. In America, we have a large portion of homeless people.

These are citizens who are suffering out on the street while we enjoy our homes.

Oftentimes, we may take for granted what we have, and forget that there are people out there who don't have a way to warm themselves. It is truly deplorable, and it breaks my heart. Many homeless people have no family left, or their family members chose to bail on them. They have no one to turn to, and so it becomes our job as human beings to show compassion and to try and give them the best path to recovery. This way, those who want to break free from homelessness have a clear path and can be helped along the way.

Growing up, I’ve always had my mom and my dad taking care of me but, at time my mom would always have to work, and I hated it. My parents were born and raised in Haiti. Even though- my father was there, but my mom was and still the one who work the most and the hardest. One day, I remembered my mom was telling me how hard life was for her when she was little. She told me that she left her parent since she was around the age of twelves, because she had to work to provide for the rest of the family. Unfortunately, because of what she was going through, she did not even graduate in high school. My parents started a small family business. My dad was a tailor, and my mom is a seamstress they both work from home. Sadly, my dad passed away couple years ago, and my mom ended up work twice harder than before. I wanted to say a big thank you to my mother for her love, even though she didn't have the chance to finish school, but she also works hard to push me with my education, and she taught me things that helped me. helped get me where I am today, I'm so proud to have a blessed mom like her. My mom always said that she wants me to be a doctor, but unfortunately, it’s not my career choice, sorry mom, but I choose a similar path she took, which is business. I know the small family business they created did not successfully expand, but in the future, I am planning to have my own businesses internationally.

I would like to thank my mom for encouraging me in everything I do. No matter what decisions I have made, she has either taught me or cheered me on through them all. As I grew older I began to hear my calling from the Lord. I felt as if he was calling me into pediatric oncology. Cancer has always affected my family, immediate and distant, and many of my remodels in life are doctors.

It was very easy to want to pursue such a calling, however the challenge came in to play when I was deciding in what way would I pursue that calling. I was unsure up until my senior year, when my family underwent many hard challenges, one of them being the loss of my grandmother.

She was a nurse, and she was someone I looked up to my whole life. After she passed, I knew exactly what I was being called in to. To become a pediatric oncology nurse. I knew that I wanted to be hands on with those kids, to mentor, to aid, to encourage and to listen to them no matter what state they would be in. I want to Glorify not only God, but my grandmother in pursuing this goal!

As someone who has always had an eclectic style and been creative, it is no wonder I am majoring in art. Many will say that being an art major isn't the best of ideas because there are no jobs in this field. Fortunately they are wrong, but I didn't know this before I applied to my university. I was going in blind just following wherever my interests led me, even if it meant little to no job opportunities and low pay.

Eventually when I spoke to my art teacher, Ariana Davis, about this major, she instantly started telling me about the different things I could do with the degree and began helping me build my portfolio. She gave me so much creative freedom and allowed me to really begin to find my art style as I progressed from 2D artwork into 3D. Mrs. Davis guided me into finding my love of creating beautiful pieces with my hands out of many different mediums. At the end of this school year I was able to find my style and hone it to the best of my abilities with what I have been taught. I can say this for a fact, I have never had an art teacher as amazing as Mrs. Davis. She inspired me and gave me suggestions that elevated my work to places I never knew I could bring it too. So thank you Mrs. Davis. For being my biggest supporter even when I didn't believe in my abilities. Thank you for pushing me to be the artist that I am today.

My dad is the guy who believes in holding the door open for the people.

He believes in shaking someone’s hand with a firm grip. My dad believes that what goes around comes around, and in that he spreads hope into the world. Maybe he hasn’t inspired millions to save the planet, but he has inspired hope in the people around him. He has inspired his friends, his family, the players he has coached, and he has most certainly inspired me. He has inspired me to treat others with respect, to believe in others. My dad has taught me the lesson that how you treat others matters. When I show others kindness, even if they don’t reciprocate, I have brought hope to them through my actions and in turn they bring hope into another person’s life. My dad taught not to judge someone not by how hard they throw or how fast they run, but by how hard they work and by how they treat others. My dad taught me that hope is getting up after you fall down. Hope is shaking the hand of the man that just beat you. Hope is spreading kindness when you struggle. My dad may not have saved the planet, but I truly believed he has made the world a better place for me to live in, a kinder place for me to live in, and for that I will always be grateful.

Foster youth, particularly teens, and their support is a social issue close to my heart. Having worked in child welfare for almost 6 years, these teens are the ones who need the most support.

Fewer homes are willing to take in teens, and fewer people shop for them at holidays, preferring to find toys for younger kids. Our teens need safe, stimulating places to go and support from our community that they matter.

Throughout my high school experience, my counselor, Kimberly d’Albenas, has been there for me through countless tough situations. Since freshman year, I have recognized that I can count on her to be there for me and give me advice. One of the most impactful things Mrs. d’Albenas has done for me is support me through difficult medical situations. In sophomore year, I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis and was told to cut some stressors out of my life.

She helped me find alternative routes to take to make my education more personalized to my needs. Mrs. d’Albenas saw the type of person I was before I even saw it myself. She believed in me and pushed me to challenge myself, while still understanding my medical limits.

Again, this year, my health declined.

I was severely ill in the hospital.

Mrs. d’Albenas made sure to check up on me. This was very impactful to my personal experience in high school because I knew that she would always be there for me. She made sure that I had all the resources I needed and simply made sure that I was okay. I often feel like a burden to others when I need to ask for help, but Mrs. d’Albenas always reassured me that I was not bothering her and that she was there to help. Mrs. d’Albenas has made it known that I can count on her for any issues I have, whether it be personal or educational.

Lonely, abandoned, and impoverished single mothers are a community problem that I wish to solve through compassionate care, mentorship, education, and prevention. There are single mothers such as myself that have found themselves with no family or community support. More than money, single mothers need love and encouragement. We need people to come alongside us, to help us carry our burden. One of my biggest struggles in being a single mother is the logistics. My limitations to find sufficient childcare and transportation for my children have posed huge hurdles for me. Elementary school hours don’t coincide with work hours. I have never had bus transportation available to me, so needing to drop off and pick up my oldest daughter during work hours has hurt me professionally. Being my family's sole provider without a single person there to help me has caused there to a lot of financial insecurity. For all of these years, it would have been so helpful to have someone pick up my child from school and take her to an aftercare program.

It would have been helpful to have someone cook a healthy meal or help my child with her homework while I cooked. I wish I had an experienced mother who could have mentored me and answer my questions about earaches, rashes, potty training, temper tantrums, and discipline. I plan to use my future success to help solve this problem. I want to connect wise and loving women with bereft single mothers. The women will be there to serve in the area of their gifting. If they are good cooks, let them cook. If they are good at encouraging, let them encourage. Let the teachers teach. Let the mentors mentor. Let the caregivers give care, and the drivers drive. It's the small things that can impact a life. Dear Collaboratory Scholarship Committee: Thank you for the scholarship awards. Your awards surprised me and it encourages me to continue my education to the best of my ability. I am very fortunate to have been considered. It means so much to me and I will explain why.

My name is Celimar Ramos, and I am the blessed mother of two girls. I’m from Central Islip, New York and in 2009, at the age of 24, I moved to Fort Myers. Before coming to Florida, I was stationed at the US Coast Guard Cutter Katherine Walker, 552, in Bayonne, NJ. Being that I was honorably discharged from the US Coast Guard, I thought it would be easy to find work that provided a living wage. I was seriously wrong in my assumptions and for the past 13 years, I have suffered the consequences of that. I reentered the workforce during the great recession and the job skills I learned in the Coast Guard didn’t translate well into civilian life for me. I also had a few setbacks. I survived domestic violence which left me homeless. The ACT shelter and my church helped me.

They encouraged me to go back to school. I took their advice and now I am a senior at FGCU pursuing my degree in International Business.

I work as a housekeeper and caregiver. This scholarship award will lessen my financial pressures and help me focus more easily on my studies. It also makes it possible for me to study full-time. Now that I am studying full-time, I am more excited than ever to be a student at FGCU. Thank you for your gracious and generous support. May the Lord bless you in all that you do to help and encourage students like me.

I think the most important social problem to me is racism and BLM. As a Dominican living in Fort Myers, Florida, I can't say that I encounter racism often. However, I believe that it will impact me in the upcoming future as I travel to other areas of Florida. I dislike racism because as a black-Hispanic man, it will affect me negatively. And although I don't rally to protest against racism, I appreciate the people that do rally against racism. With that being said, I dislike the way that some rallies are held.

Months ago, there was a protest in New York City that caused massive damage to private business. These businesses had nothing to do with BLM and did nothing to discourage minorities. However, many people broke into stores like Gucci and Nike during the protest. I fully disagree with this mentality because it causes people to question the true intentions behind the rally. When MLK protested racial inequality in America, he did so peacefully. He fought oppressive local and state governments by words and actions. He inspired kids to boycott and demanded legislative action to be taken. Which is not to say that the BLM movement does not do this.

We see frequent use of nonviolent parades, events, and gatherings. But the fact that it can devolve to the level of mass looting is unacceptable.

Parades should show what we can achieve peacefully. We shouldn't use violence to present our causes because it becomes less of an argument and more of a demand. We should not demand things to change because at the end of the day, we didn't convince the opposition to agree with us. We simply forced them to bend to our opinion. Our methods of communication with parliament and the world should be clear and convincing, not destructive.

I want to say I am truly grateful to have the opportunity to attend college as well as earn scholarships. Putting my best foot forward, I want to continue to improve by doing my best and giving my all. I would especially like to give thanks to my mother and father, for raising me as well as they did and letting me know I can accomplish whatever I put my mind to.

Not only do they do that, but they support my choices and decisions I have made now and going forward I know they always will. My mother serves as my inspiration and the shoulder I always can lean on and know she is there for me and will let me know when I am right or wrong. The outspoken goddess is the reason why I am the way I am and want to help others and better myself to take opportunities given. I would also like to thank Mr. Dakendo Michel, as his class was a welcoming home away from home. He pushed me to tell my story and to serve as the leader for the individuals that lacked the confidence and voice to share. Having others push you to become a better version of yourself is a great feeling. I personally want to say, always complete what you start and never give up on your goals! Unspoken positive visions can always bring you greatness and success, when put into action. Be proactive not reactive and tell yourself to be great everyday, as you know you can. Don’t let issues happening take over your confidence and gratitude to push your reliable strength to move forward in life, your future, and your personal growth. They trusted me enough to be a part of this newly formed youth group, making me the first president to lead a wonderful group of teens. I know that if I ever need help, they will be behind me, supporting me through whatever comes my way. They are such an amazing group of people who accept and love everyone.

They truly deserve the world. There aren't enough words to show my gratitude towards them. I also want to thank my mother. She has been with me through every step of my life, supporting me and helping me grow. I remember sitting in her classroom at a very young age, listening to her passionately lecture about the human body, while I quietly copied the colorful diagrams off of medical textbooks. Fast forward 12 years, I was able to hold an exhibition through the IB art program, portraying human hearts in ways you would have never imagined.

I'm now a senior graduating from cape coral high-school, enrolled in one of the most rigorous programs offered. She likes to say that I'm responsible for my own success, but it was because of the strong foundation she created that allowed me to succeed. She believed in me when I didn't have the strength to believe in myself. Thanks to her, I am going to the college of my dreams, pursuing medical illustration and taking hold of opportunities I would have never imagined receiving. They say the sky's the limit, but my mom has taught me that there's a whole universe beyond it, and that anything is possible.

The social problems that I’m most passionate about both pertain to my race, gender, and the career path that I have chosen. As the oldest girl in a Hispanic household, I’m expected to settle down with a man and let him handle pretty much everything besides cooking, taking care of kids, etc. Most of my childhood was spent studying while my Abuela was preparing me to set up my life so that I would be used to these roles. I’ve grown up now and I wish that as Latinos that we would be open to dropping these rules we set up for our daughters, granddaughters, nieces, etc. Most of my family also doesn’t view my choice for a career having to do with arts in a positive light, either. I want people to be okay with being different, and that you don’t have to be miserable working in an office or as a lawyer or doctor because it’s what your family wanted. Choose a career that you will be happy with. Also, I’m grateful for my mom for not only pushing me, but for being there for me every step of the way. I know being a teen mom was NOT easy in the slightest, and I grew up with her.

Social problems I disagree with is the housing ,discrimination, and child abuse. Some people are just trying to live basic and still can’t afford it.

In my opinion I feel that if someone can show proof of employment that they are working hard to provide for themselves or their family it should be a limitation of the high prices people are paying for certain things.

Also today is already hard for people to live a normal because of skin color so now some people may be scared to work because they fear for their life, and the ones that do have jobs are not getting treated fairly or not getting paid enough. Having a job is important now of days because that’s the only way we can live. Another problem in today’s life is child abuse it can be mentally and physically it’s not fair for a child to get treated a certain way because how old they are we still are humans and deserve the up most respect like anyone else. Treating a child in a bad way or saying something horrible to them can take a toll on them in the future and have an effect on the way they may begin to act. When younger children do get treated bad I feel that no one try’s to understand the problem until it’s to late and that should be the case because people begin to lose their life because they don’t have help to cope the problems they have. Lastly, in my opinion all these social problems we are having today should be fixed or the government or enforcement should be able to have a meeting about giving people chances to live better and are trying to seek help to be in a better position in life.

This resource is run by the counselors at my school, who put hours upon hours of work into making sure that the Cape Coral High School student population has access to as many resources as possible. For this reason, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the CCHS Counselors and Career Coordinator, specifically Ms. Robillard and Dr. Travis-McCarter. The process of discovering and applying for scholarships/university can be extremely stressful. However, the endless support provided by these faculty members made it significantly easier. Because of their help, I am honored to say that I have won multiple scholarships that will allow me to graduate college debt-free.

Similarly, it is through their research that I was presented with the Collaboratory Scholarships opportunity. Alongside myself, many of my peers have earned scholarships as a result of the scholarship Google Classroom. Along with scholarships opportunities, this resource also aids with college admissions/decisions. In the fall, before I had decided on which university I wanted to enroll in, Dr. Travis-McCarter held a virtual meeting with one of my possible university options. Through this meeting, I was able to learn information that helped me make my university decision. Without it, the decision would not have been as easy.

I find it especially important for us to pay attention to and try to solve these issues because at the core of what makes humanity - human - is our subtle distinctions. They mold us into who we are and what we believe in. To simply deny someone the ability to express those characteristics is beyond cruel. A lot of the issues we face as a cohort or on a societal spectrum could be remedied by allowing openness and leading with kindness. We need to be more aware of the hatred and prejudices that we choose to put into this world, as it relays back to the sensitive ears of the children of this nation. These kids are vulnerable and act as sponges to the information they hear.

Jennie Goffe is one of the agricultural teachers at Clewiston High School and a teacher that has greatly impacted my life and education. I say this because she is a teacher who is genuinely passionate about what she teaches and is here for the students no matter what.

All my life, I had the desire to become an educator. Growing up, I always played "teacher" with my siblings, acting like a real teacher as I graded papers, made fake worksheets, and drew on a whiteboard. But I never knew what subject to teach until I joined Ms. Goffe's class. She encouraged me to branch out and become an agriculture teacher because she could see how passionate I was about the industry.

Ever since, she has helped me along the way with finding scholarships, making connections with the University of Florida, and providing me with the opportunity to teach agriculture at the middle school. Ms. Goffe has taught me the importance of networking and making connections. Through FFA and Ms. Goffe's help, I became involved with a program called the Ag Ed Institute through the University of Florida, where I was able to tour the campus and meet a majority of the professors! This allowed me to make those connections and make the transfer from high school to the University of Florida much more manageable by knowing people ahead of time! Her love for her students is proven in how she is supportive and caring for her students. This has made me appreciative and allows me to look up to her as a role model. Her confidence and the way she encourages others are very inspiring and have helped me out of my comfort zone. Ms. Goffe strives to make sure her students are actively involved and learn more about agriculture and all of the benefits this industry offers. The lack of a sense of urgency in affairs relating to environmental health is a social issue that I am very passionate about. In order for significant change to occur, the degree to which our climate is in danger needs to be more thoroughly understood by every member of the population. This is obviously not the case, which is evident in many of the political outcomes seen nationally and locally. Without a change in these societal attitudes towards the environment, future generations will only be increasingly more threatened due to a poor organization of priorities of previous generations.

I believe that education is such an empowering thing but the communities that need it the most get it the least. As the United States and the world as a whole become more diverse we see the disparities in education among the top percent and the bottom get wider. As time goes on the wealthy become more educated while the poor struggle to clime out their disparate situation. Coming from an immigrant background and being a first-generation student I can say that I feel very uncertain about my education moving forward. I constantly worry about my ability to pay and how to set myself up for success and I know I have it pretty well compared to other students that come from my background. Many students in my high school have been working in the fields picking tomatoes since middle school to help sustain their families and the last thing on their minds in college. So knowing this, what can we do about it? I believe that higher education programs such as The Guadalupe Center and the Immokalee Foundation are amazing initiatives started to solve this issue. As a community, we should make it an initiative to continue to invest in the future of underprivileged students.

A social problem I am passionate about is the Deaf community’s ability to function as normal as possible in society. I took an American Sign Language (ASL) class for school, and it really showed me some issues the Deaf community faces. I learned that being deaf is something the community tries to get everyone to embrace. They encourage deaf individuals to learn ASL and live their life normally.

However, not many hearing people know ASL. This leads to trouble in everyday tasks that hearing people can do in minutes. Members of the Deaf community aren’t served in drive-thru lines all the time simply because they are deaf. With the pandemic, it has been very difficult for the Deaf community to interact when they wore a face covering. A large part of ASL is facial expressions, so without being able to see the whole face, communication is very hard.

Overall, the Deaf community encounters a lot of problems simply because they can’t hear. In order to combat this, I believe schools should be teaching ASL to elementary aged students. Their minds are fresh and ready to soak up any new knowledge. This means they might have a better chance of remembering the ASL. Also, since they are being taught ASL in school, they will have to learn it correctly in order to do the best.

By teaching ASL, students are also able to learn about a new community, and show them something they never knew about before. The ASL class I took taught me a lot about the Deaf community, and I hope that there

Throughout my educational journey, the teacher that has inspired me the most would be my mother, Mrs. Sahingoz. As an educator for twenty-five years, my mother has not only been an inspiration to me but to my sister, who also became a teacher because of her reflective strong work ethic in her career, and her students. When out and about either shopping or online, she is always finding unique ideas for her students to be more engaged and enjoy learning through the process. Besides engageable ideas, she is an educator for most children who know little to no English coming into kindergarten. At the end of each academic year, she gets her nonEnglish learning five-year old students to reach about eighty to 100 words in English and being able to speak and answer questions. She is nonstop up and running around for her students to make sure they receive the best education each year for them to keep succeeding in their following grade level. For the past eighteen years of my life, I don’t remember my mother any other way.

During the time my father was in the process for his United States Citizenship was also the beginning of my discovery for my passion. I would assist in study sessions for my father’s United States Citizenship test where I would present questions to him, and he would have to get the answers correct. In this process, I would learn new facts and even recall old ones of our American history. From this, I developed an interest in history. I cannot wait to carry on my education where I will continue to explore the histories of our American history and different cultures.

I plan on reflecting my mother and press it onto my future students. My dream for the future is to be an educator to be an inspiration for my students just as my mother was for me and others in her lifetime.

I feel passionate because I was once bullied, and I know many people who have not liked being at school because of it. I think it is important to recognize how influential the environment around us is on society. I grew up in Southwest Florida, known for its unique animal habitats and estuaries.

However, I am painfully aware of the ecological impact that comes with living in such a popular tourist destination. The vehicles we use leak oils and fluids that slowly cover the roads- later washed into waterways. Fertilizer that keeps lawns and golf courses lush and green ends up in our canals and waterways, creating problems with algae blooms. Agricultural, residential, and commercial development make the balance between man and nature even more challenging. Our ecosystems are fragile and nature cannot be destroyed in the name of human convenience. I'm passionate about this issue because I am watching it happen right before my eyes. I also believe the solution is not as complicated, locally. Many, many times I have found myself stressing about how much money it is going to cost to get me through schooling without having to take out an excessive amount of student loans. My College and Career Research teacher, Ms. Skinner, mentioned that Collaboratory was one of the best and worthwhile applications to submit.

When I got the email that I received a scholarship, I knew that she was right and I felt grateful that my teacher had introduced this program to me and that I always had motivation to complete the application.
