Covering Many Fronts Our cover is covered by one of the best pass coverage protectors to play the game. In addition, we’ve got you covered if you’re enjoying the beauty of Colorado as a transplant - given our cover man played professional football and baseball all over the country. From Dallas and California to Atlanta, Washington, New York, and Cincinnati, “Primetime” is a personal favorite of mine because I originally hail from Dallas, Texas. I remember the on-field lightning and energy he brought to America’s team - the only athlete to play in both a Super Bowl and World Series. You can read more from my exclusive interview with Deion Sanders starting on page 42.

HOLIDAY DE GIF T GUI 2017

As the leaves begin to turn and the change in season is imminent, we wish you a happy fall and encourage you to get outside, take a road trip, and soak up the grandeur of fall in Colorado. Finally, I have a request that I hope you will indulge. My staff and I want to hear from you! Last year we featured our first ever Holiday Gift Guide in over 14 years of publishing. It was a huge success and we’d like to bring it back in our next edition (Winter 2018, on newstands November 30th) and want your help. Last year’s theme was “Staff Picks” but this year I think it would be fun to have “Reader’s Picks.”

Johannes Hunter Jewelers

Linda, Robin, and Brenda in their sophisticated showroom at 5182 N Nevada

Honored to be part of the Colorado Springs Community for over 30 years

Follow JHJ on Instagram @johanneshunter and Facebook @JHJewelers By: Nancy Kay White

Early Beginnings This past August, Johannes Hunter Jewelers celebrated its 30-year anniversary as Colorado Springs’ premier jewelry store. This stunning location in the shadow of Pikes Peak is a far cry from where it all began. Founder Linda Johannes, a single mother of two, began her career selling Native American jewelry on the side of the road in Bozeman, Montana in the early 70s. As popularity for this type of jewelry grew, Linda opened her first jewelry store in downtown Bozeman and also began supplying Yellowstone National Park with jewelry for their concessions. Over the years, Linda transitioned from Native American jewelry to fine jewelry, and in the 80s, daughters Robin and Brenda joined the company, both bringing extensive knowledge and experience of their own.

JHJ travels to numerous trade shows throughout the year and returns to Colorado Springs with a world of meticulously hand-selected jewels. They are known for their contemporary and truly unusual designs, as well as traditional core essentials. They also excel at selecting the absolute highest quality of diamonds. Every unmounted diamond over one-tenth of a carat is individually hand selected by the JHJ gemologists and staff.

What Makes JHJ Unique Johannes Hunter Jewelers has an ongoing fascination and love of fine and rare color gemstones. They are constantly searching for stones that are of exceptional purity and intensity of color, and have been cut to release the brilliance that commands attention. Known in the industry for their love of exciting color, these gemstones often find their way to JHJ. Most of these stones are custom designed into the one-of-a-kind pieces you will find on display in the store. 10

In-House Custom Design JHJ can create custom jewelry for the most discriminating. In-house experts are bursting with design ideas and are ready to guide you in creating a personalized treasure or remodeling a keepsake you already own.

World Acclaimed Designers JHJ is a name dropper when it comes to their impressive lineup of world acclaimed designers. A client favorite, Eddie Sakamoto, is a designer with a flair for the dramatic. He uses metals like oxidized silver and bronze to create his bangle bracelets and dangly earring collection that “dance with the light.” Sholdt is a small Seattle-based designer known for simple pieces that boast a contemporary edge. Marcel Roelofs brings continuous innovation to the store. He comes from Germany for a trunk show at least once a year. Many of his one-of-a-kind necklaces and interchangeable clasps are bold in size and dramatic in color.

the behavior of light performance in a diamond. They are cut to precise angles and proportions to maximize light emerging from the top of the gem. The result is bigger, whiter, and brighter diamonds.

Do you…?

Jewelry Repair Shannon Carr is JHJ’s on-site goldsmith and repair specialist extraordinaire. A fifteen-year veteran of the industry, he holds his bench jeweler’s certificate from Jewelers of America. This “resident magician” uses a laser welder for repairs, enabling him to repair and restore using very little heat. This process of bonding metals protects your most valued pieces. In addition to these skills, Shannon is known to restring beads and pearls in an intricate fashion. JHJ also has an external network of highly skilled and trusted specialists for pearl/bead stringing, hand engraving, enamel repair, and diamond recutting and repair.

Steal of the Week Emails For the bride and groom, the choices are limitless. Mark Schneider is one of the few living designers with items showcased in the Smithsonian museums. His engagements rings are fresh and distinctive, appealing to the bride who appreciates innovative design. Parade Designs seamlessly marry vintage with organic, including delicate filigree details and gorgeous leaf and vine motifs. Nationally known A. Jaffe, a New York-based designer, has the best collection of updated classics in the business. Recently adding a selection of unusual men’s wedding bands to their collection, one staff favorite has black diamonds set into the sides of the ring. Breuning has become a JHJ staple with consistently rotating classic and dynamic designs, originating in Germany. The JHJ Signature Collection features luxurious and timeless designs, created with the highest quality diamonds and craftsmanship. Johannes Hunter offers new precision cut diamonds called Fire and Ice. These diamonds are the result of more than 15 years of industry research concerning

If you are on the JHJ email list, every Saturday morning you will receive an email showcasing an item in the store called “Steal of the Week,” available at a great price. You will also receive information on new arrivals, updates, events, and more.

Going Forward Johannes Hunter Jewelers has maintained the highest standards of ethics in the jewelry industry for over 30 years. They cherish the relationships they have developed with their clients and are committed to providing the finest jewels and most professional, knowledgeable service possible. Constantly investing in our community, they are an active supporter of the arts and charities throughout the Springs. JHJ hold dear the principle of a family-owned and operated business. Consequently, they treat their clients like family. Their goal is to continue to provide unprecedented standards of quality and service.

I do.

There are questions, suspended moments, where the answer can change the course of your life. Capture these moments with Johannes Hunter Jewelers.

Beware of Cold and Flu We strongly recommend all seniors and children under the age of four get vaccinated for the flu. By: John McKinnon Brookdale Bear Creek

I

t’s that time of year again, cold and flu season. Cold and flu season begins during the Fall and peaks in the Winter between December and February and can go as late as May some years. Flu is considered the most severe of seasonal respiratory diseases. Brookdale would like to give you and your loved ones some tips on how to avoid getting sick during this season. At Brookdale you and your families’ health are of utmost concern; and we use techniques to help minimize the risk of cold, flu, and other common disease outbreaks. Seniors and children are at a higher risk to have complications related to cold and flu. Respiratory diseases not only have their own symptoms but often develop into pneumonia, ear infections, increased confusion, and higher risk for falls. These diseases can even exacerbate the symptoms of chronic illnesses such as CHF (congestive heart failure), dementia, and diabetes.

To protect the community, especially our senior and children populations, here are 4 tips to follow:

1.

Wash your hands frequently and use the correct hand washing procedure. Use an antibacterial soap and hot water. To make sure you are washing long enough; singing “Happy Birthday is a common tool used to wash your hands for an appropriate amount of time. Clean your hand past the wrist, clean under fingernails, and use a paper towel to open the doors disposing of the towel when you leave. Hand washing is the most effective way to stop the spread of any disease. Hand sanitizer is a good way to clean your hands when a hand washing station is not readily available but is not an alternative to handwashing.

2.

Stay home if you have any symptoms connected to flu, cold, or any spreadable disease. It is best to stay home until after symptoms have subsided and/ or you no longer have a temperature for at least 24 hours. If you must leave your home and have any symptoms, wear a mask and other protective garments. Do not visit places with higher risk populations such as schools, daycares, and senior communities. Unfortunately, many diseases do not have symptoms until a couple of days after infection. This means a seemingly healthy person can spread diseases without feeling sick.

3.

Cover your mouth when sneezing and coughing. Disposable tissue is best and should be disposed of immediately after covering your nose or mouth. Wash hands immediately after sneezing or coughing. Disinfect surfaces with a product that is antibacterial. In the case of the flu, experts believe it is spread from tiny droplets that escape from your eyes, nose, and mouth. These droplets spread to other people and infect them with the flu virus.

4.

Get a flu vaccine annually. Most healthcare providers are required to get a flu vaccination. We strongly recommend all seniors and children under the age of four get vaccinated as well. To protect you and your family from cold and flu and help prevent the spread of disease, get vaccinated. In some cases these diseases are unavoidable, but overall community health depends on the efforts of others to do their due diligence not to spread disease. Remember, if you are in close contact with kids and seniors, these populations are more susceptible to complications. To protect these populations, please consider these tips and make it a normal part of your routine. For more information on cold and flu prevention or where to get flu vaccinations, please contact Brookdale Senior Living.

Academy Women’s Healthcare Associates By: Andrea Sinclair

Unmatched Legacy of Keeping Care Local

woman’s health and livelihood can be severely impacted by conditions such as endometriosis, which affects nearly 10 percent of the world’s female population, according to the US National Institutes of Health. Endometriosis is most common in women in their 30s and 40s, but it can begin in girls as young as eight years of age. For many affected women, minimally invasive gynecologic surgery with cutting-edge technology such as the da Vinci® Surgical Robotic System can provide the healing and relief that drastically improves their lives. At Academy Women’s Healthcare Associates in Colorado 14

COLivingWell.com

Springs, a dynamic team of highly trained OB/GYN physicians with decades of expertise and thousands of successful gynecologic surgeries can provide world-class women’s healthcare - all close to home. For more than 25 years, the OB/GYN physicians at Academy Women’s Healthcare Associates in Colorado Springs have been providing expert, compassionate, and mission-based women’s health care. Through an enduring commitment to that mission, they have set the standard for women’s health care in the Pikes Peak region. From care for menstrual disorders, fertility issues, pregnancy, or menopause symptoms, our dedicated providers combine medical expertise with a compassionate touch to care for the mind, body, and spirit of our patients – all close to home.

“Since we began practicing in 1994, we have been honored to care for women of all ages in Colorado Springs and from all over southern Colorado,” said Dr. Kevin Weary, Obstetrics and Gynecology physician with AWHA. “We presently have eight doctors in our practice, all highly skilled in gyn surgery, including minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. Six of our doctors also utilize the da Vinci® Surgical Robotic System – with our AWHA surgeons being among the first to use that technology for gynecology in southern Colorado.” Every member of the AWHA team – including physicians, triage nurses, and front desk staff – is honored to provide excellent, compassionate care to women of all ages. AWHA experts offer comprehensive women’s health care at all ages and stages, including well-woman checks, family planning, prenatal and delivery care, and menopause management. Gynecologic surgery, when needed, including minimally invasive robotic surgery for gynecologic conditions including fibroids, incontinence, pelvic pain, endometriosis, and vaginal prolapse, are also offered. “We are all highly trained in all aspects of gynecologic surgery, utilizing a variety of techniques. We have even performed live surgeries under video feeds at the St. Francis Medical Center campus to train other physicians on different laparoscopic techniques,” Dr. Weary said. “This is a fully-capable OB/ GYN practice, it was our group that developed the Perinatal Medicine Program for Centura Health Colorado group for our highest risk pregnancies. We have been collaborating with and consulting for Penrose-St. Francis Health Services since the 1990s.” Dr. Weary moved to Colorado Springs in 1996 following his residency at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas, and met with AWHA’s founding doctors, among them Dr. David Stark. He was excited and inspired by a shared mission to provide women’s health care that combines medical expertise with empathy and compassion, taking pride in cultivating lifelong

relationships, one patient at a time. “We believe in partnering with each patient to provide care that benefits her physical, emotional, and spiritual health,” Dr. Weary said. “From a mission perspective and from a career perspective, it now makes perfect sense for AWHA to now be joining Centura on a permanent basis, and we are all honored to join with CHPG to improve the health and lives of the women in Colorado Springs, El Paso County, and beyond.”

From care for menstrual disorders, fertility issues, pregnancy, or menopause symptoms, our dedicated providers combine medical expertise with a compassionate touch to care for the mind, body, and spirit of our patients.

As the saying goes, “practice makes perfect,” and with more than 33,000 babies delivered over 25 years, AWHA, part of Centura Health, have had lots and lots of practice. AWHA’s experienced OB/GYN physicians are committed to listening and connecting with patients and to providing personalized care throughout every stage of life to achieve whole person care. What do 25 years of practice and 33,000 deliveries mean for AWHA? It means Dr. Weary, Dr. Stark, and the rest of the highly trained and experienced OB/GYN physicians are prepared to treat all women’s health needs and conditions, from the onset of puberty to postmenopause. While some practices accept only low-rise obstetrical cases and routine gynecologic cases, AWHA providers excel in all aspects on

women’s health care and are among the region’s most experienced obstetricians and gynecologic surgeons. “Individually we each have lots of experience and expertise; collectively we have even more. We take even the toughest and most high-risk cases because we trust in each other’s abilities and our own,” Dr. Weary said. “AWHA’s C-section rates is much lower than the national average of nearly 30 percent – ours is below 20 percent, and that is in spite of our higher risk, higher acuity patient population. We strive to meet our patients hopes and desires for their pregnancy and their delivery, we manage labor well, we are patient in the labor process, and we are exceptionally well prepared and equipped to deal with the unexpected situations that arise in pregnancy and in labor.” AWHA offers comprehensive OB/ GYN services at two locations in the Colorado Springs area. In Colorado Springs, AWHA is located adjacent to St. Francis Medical Center in the Northcare Building. The Monument office is just off Interstate 25 on Jackson Creek Parkway in the TriLakes Health Pavilion.

SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT Both locations are accepting new patients and accept most insurance plans, including TRICARE and Medicare. Visit www.awha.com to learn more.

“I knew that I would be taking care of patients who were going through what I had experienced and I wanted to know as much as I could about my own injury and condition, then use that knowledge to help my patients find their way through rehabilitation to a new and fulfilling life,” Dr. House said.

Guiding Patients to New, Whole Lives Capron Neuro and Trauma Rehabilitation Center at St. Francis Medical Center By: Andrea Sinclair

S

everal years ago, Dr. Pio Guerrero met a man whose mental illness and past medical conditions had devastated his quality of life. The physician found the man suffering from a Traumatic Brain Injury in addition to schizophrenia and on the verge of homelessness, without any family or friends for support and wearing layers of underwear and pants, “because he wouldn’t keep his clothes on,” according to his few caregivers. The man lived without any semblance of dignity or a livelihood, so Dr. Guerrero took it upon himself to help him find permanent housing in an assisted living facility, get the correct medication for his conditions, and helped rehabilitate his physical and neurological injuries and impediments. “That man went on to marry one of the nurses who cared for him at the assisted living facility,” Dr. Guerrero recalled with a sincere, gratified smile. “Myself and other physicians, nurses, and caregivers who worked with him, were able to guide him to a new life, a new future, and a new happiness. That’s what rehabilitation and healing are all about.” Dr. Guerrero cares for every single patient at the Capron Neuro and Trauma Rehabilitation Center at St. Francis Medical Center, part of Penrose-St. Francis Health Services, with the same dedication and steadfast commitment to world-class quality and compassionate health care. The acute inpatient rehabilitation program offers an interdisciplinary approach to rehabilitation where trained professionals like Dr. Guerrero work directly with patients and their families to design plans of care that meet each individual’s particular condition and needs when recovering from a neurological condition such as stroke, or a traumatic injury. The 16

Capron Neuro and Trauma Rehabilitation Center does not treat mental health conditions and does not assist with placement. The Trauma Rehabilitation Center moved to a bigger, newer space in the 6th floor of St. Francis Medical Center at the beginning of May after many years of outgrowing its original space at Penrose Hospital. The new center allows patients to enjoy a newer, more modern facility that is more accessible, offers greater privacy to patients, and allows the rehabilitation team to continue to provide outstanding care. “The Capron Neuro and Trauma Rehabilitation Center cares mostly for stroke, brain injury, and spinal cord injury patients,” explained Dr. Glen House, Medical Director of Rehabilitation Services for PenroseSt. Francis. “We continue to make maximizing neuroplasticity our greatest goal, through our physician-guided approach that includes all disciplines of therapy, outstanding nursing care, and using the latest technology.” Dr. House suffered a snow skiing accident during his junior year in college and became a quadriplegic at the age of 20, which could have ended his medical aspirations, but instead inspired him to become a trail blazer in his career with a highly personal and heartfelt understanding of his patients’ challenges and experiences. Dr. House pursued physical medicine and rehabilitation following the life-changing neck and vertebra injury he suffered because he knew he could make a real difference in his patients’ lives. “I knew that I would be taking care of patients who were going through what I had experienced and I wanted

to know as much as I could about my own injury and condition, then use that knowledge to help my patients find their way through rehabilitation to a new and fulfilling life,” Dr. House said. Even adrenaline and adventure seekers can relate to Dr. House, who has climbed Pikes Peak five times on his wheelchair to raise money for brain injury for the Pikes Peak Challenge. With their new area at St. Francis Medical Center, Doctors Guerrero and House agree that the rehab center has finally found a space that matches the team’s capabilities and meets patients’ needs and expectations. Every room in the rehab center is private and has a wheelchairaccessible bathroom that will afford patients greater comfort, accessibility, and privacy. Every member of the Inpatient Rehab Team is fully trained to deliver the world-class rehabilitation care for the Colorado Springs

and Pikes Peak communities, with consistently improved outcomes for all stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and spinal cord injury patients. Together with every member of the Capron Neuro and Trauma Rehabilitation Center, Doctors Guerrero and House are committed to helping patients return to their homes, their families, and their work as quickly as possible. Both physicians are motivated by the PenroseSt. Francis mission to provide our neighbors in the Pikes Peak region with whole-person care to help them get well and stay well, keeping care local today and into the future. Recognizing Parental Alienation Syndrome Parental alienation, if proven, is taken very seriously by Colorado family law courts. By: Gordon N. Shayne

L

egal matters, which involve child custody issues, can often become hostile. One parent may attempt to retaliate by interfering with the other parent’s visitation and attempt to undermine a healthy relationship between the child and the ‘other’ parent. Parental Alienation – defined as when one parent’s relationship with his or her child is harmed by the other parent. It can have devastating consequences on the emotional health and well-being of the child. Parental alienation, often confused with estrangement, are not the same. When a parent is abusive or has failures as a parent which strains their relationship with the child, the child may not want to have contact with the parent, resulting in an estrangement. Parental alienation, on the other hand, is when the actions of one parent deliberately harm the relationship the child has with the other parent. In these cases, the child feels little to no guilt about his negative feelings towards the alienated parent.

• The limitation/termination of contact with the other parent • One parent threatens to move away or relocate with the child • A parent tells the children they do not need to listen to the other parent • The Parenting Orders of the Court are disregarded and violated • Use the children as messengers for the other parent • Exclude one parent from events/activities involving the children 18

COLivingWell.com

Parental alienation, if proven, is taken very seriously by Colorado family law courts and is considered a form of emotional abuse. C.R.S. § 14-10-124 (1.5)(a)(VI) explicitly requires a court to consider a party’s ability to foster a positive relationship between a child and the other parent as one of many factors in determining parenting time and a child’s best interest. If a court determines that a party does not support the other party’s relationship with a child and takes that lack of support to the level of alienation, that alienating party can find that he or she is the one who is having parenting time curtailed or decisionmaking authority taken away. To establish Parental Alienation or other factors that are contrary to ‘Children’s Best Interests,’ consult Author Gordon Shayne of Shayne Law based in Colorado Springs.

ABOUT

Identifying a pattern of behavior is the first step to a remedy through the Colorado Family Court system. Alienation of affections can be illustrated, but not limited to the following behaviors:

• Speaking badly of the other parent in the presence of the child to gain the child’s loyalty • Excessively intrusion into the other parent’s parenting time (i.e. frequent texting or calling)

Nerve Injury It is difficult to understand how a numb area of the body can be painful, however, this is common with a nerve injury.

By: Katharine Leppard, MD

T

he nerves are the electrical wiring system in our body. Nerves carry feeling or sensation from the skin to the brain, and also carry the signal to move from our brain to the muscles. When a nerve is injured, a person can have weakness or paralysis in that body part. There can be numbness, “pins and needles” sensations, tingling, and or pain. It is difficult to understand how a numb area of the body can be painful, however this is common with a nerve injury. Whenever a nerve is injured a number of questions arise. Will this nerve injury recover? Will the recovery be complete or partial? How long will it take? What can I do to help? What can doctors do to help?

The nerves in our body fall into two categories: The central nervous system which includes the brain and spinal cord. Injury to this area of the nervous system is permanent. The peripheral nervous system which includes the nerves in the arms and legs. These nerves have the capacity to recover from injury. 20

COLivingWell.com

Nerve injuries fall into several categories. In layman’s terms, a nerve can be compressed, bruised, partially damaged, or completely cut. A compressed nerve, such as carpal tunnel compression of the median nerve at the wrist can be surgically decompressed to take the pressure off the nerve. A bruised nerve typically recovers quickly and completely.

A partially damaged nerve can recover by two methods. A nerve is similar to a large electric cable; there are a number of “wires” on the inside called axons with an outer sheath around the nerve. If an axon inside the nerve is severely damaged, the end of that axon will die. This axon will need to regrow in order to recover. If some of the axons survived and go past the site of the injury, they will send out branches to reach the muscle that does not have its nerve supply. This type of recovery is called collateral sprouting. Both of these types of recovery take significant time to occur. This recovery is up to mother nature. How much a nerve will or will not recover is impossible to determine.

Recommendations:

Whenever a nerve is injured a number of questions arise. Will this nerve injury recover? Will the recovery be complete or partial? How long will it take? What can I do to help? What can doctors do to help?

Medications are available for nerve pain. These include Neurontin (gabapentin), Lyrica (pregabalin), or Cymbalta (duloxetine). These medications may help nerve pain, however, they do not fix a nerve injury. The medications will not correct numbness. They will not speed up the recovery of the nerve injury. I recommend laboratory tests to evaluate for underlying health issues which can impair nerve recovery - a hemoglobin A-1 C to rule out diabetes or pre-diabetes, thyroid studies, and a vitamin B12 blood test with the goal being between 400 to 1,000. Avoid excess vitamin B6. Doses of vitamin B6 greater than 100 mg are toxic to nerves and actually cause nerve damage. Healthy living and avoiding excess alcohol is important, as alcohol is toxic to the nerves.

Nerve surgery. Nerve surgery is done if a nerve is completely cut in half. A nerve that is cut will try to regrow, but when the outer sheath is destroyed, the nerve cannot make it to the correct destination, and will often grow into a ball called a neuroma. A clean laceration of a nerve with no tension will be surgically reconnected. If the nerve injury is more extensive, then nerve graft surgery may be performed. In nerve graft surgery a nerve from elsewhere in the body is sacrificed, commonly the side of the ankle. This leaves a permanent numb patch. The outer sheath is used to make a bridge, or a path, for the nerve to regrow. This nerve growth is very slow, about a half to one inch per month.

Maintaining range of motion in the body part affected by the nerve injury is critical. If a joint becomes stiff, even if the nerve regrows to the muscle, the function will not be normal. Stretching the body part that has a nerve injury, several times a day, is very important. It is unknown if alternative treatments such as stem cell injections are of benefit. Nerve injuries can be devastating. How much the nerve recovers is up to Mother Nature. This is terribly difficult and frustrating for both patient and doctor. Most recovery will plateau at two years. Ronald McDonald ® House Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern Colorado to open new doors in Spring 2019

A

new Ronald McDonald House is being built on the UCHealth Memorial North campus near the southwest corner of Union Boulevard and Royal Pine Drive. It will be within eyesight and walking distance to the new Children’s Hospital Colorado, Colorado Springs. “With Colarelli Construction leading the way, we plan to break ground mid-August with a challenging goal of opening doors of a new Ronald McDonald House simultaneously when Children’s Hospital opens their doors Spring 2019,” shared Executive Director, Beth Alessio. “Our goal and hope is to ensure every family receives the support they need, when they need it, and our operations don’t skip a beat with our move to a new House in Northern Colorado Springs.” Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern Colorado works hand-in-hand with Children’s Hospital Colorado and other nearby pediatric services to provide the opportunity for Family Centered Care to occur, a practice found to be vital to the comprehensive care of critically ill children. Ronald McDonald House gives families the opportunity to stay near their hospitalized child and involved in their complex medical care throughout treatment and at no cost to them. Lifting burdens of where will they stay, what will they eat, how will they get back and forth, do laundry, etc allows families to focus on their child throughout their medical treatment. “We believe that when families are together, they are stronger. We believe the love and support of family is as powerful as any medication. We believe in keeping families near the care and resources needed to thrive. We believe that seriously ill children

24

should have their parents and family close by throughout their treatment.” The Ronald McDonald House offers a warm, safe, clean, nurturing environment for families of seriously ill and injured children. Many families travel far from home to get specialized care, and Ronald McDonald Houses serve as a home base for families whose children are receiving critical treatment at nearby medical facilities. “By staying at our Ronald McDonald House, parents can better communicate with their child’s medical team, remain close to their children, and keep up with complicated treatment plans,” Alessio said. “They can focus on the health of their child, while having a place to stay nearby at little or no cost.” Fully accessible to all, families staying at the new Ronald McDonald House will be provided with private bedrooms, community spaces, large kitchens, play areas for children and teens, outdoor living and play areas, laundry facilities, friendly, caring staff/volunteers, and homecooked meals. “RTA Architects worked handin-hand with us to ensure the families were kept in mind when designing the new House, each space created purposely for those who will utilize it most,” Alessio said. Ronald McDonald House is more than just a House. It provides comfort, support, and resources to families facing the stress, fear, and hardship of having a seriously ill child. Shared recently by one of the thousands of families supported by the Colorado Springs Ronald McDonald House, “Staying at the Ronald McDonald House and being with families facing similar issues gave us hope, something we were missing before we walked through the doors. It was a gift we wouldn’t have received otherwise.”

The Coach is Coming Home

I

By: Nancy Kay White

Bob and Julie raised five children. Bob coached for 59 years, nine of which were with the Green Bay Packers, the New York Giants, and the Chicago Bears. I asked Julie what it was like to be an NFL wife and mother. She said if their two boys were showing a need for discipline, she would tell the boys, “The Coach is coming home so you better behave!”

don’t know when I have enjoyed an afternoon so much as I sat down last summer to talk with one of the most beautiful couples I have ever encountered. At first acquaintance, they are striking in appearance - Julie with her gentle crystal- clear blue eyes and Coach Bob who exhibits commanding discipline born from years of NFL life. As we chatted, the real beauty of these two individuals lay in their story of two who become one and chose to live not for themselves but to pour out their lives into the lives of those around them. This was the real reason I was so captivated by this couple. Having Ubered over, I was a few minutes early for our interview. From the time I drove onto the grounds of Liberty Heights, a continuum of care retirement community, on the north side of the Springs, I felt peace. To my left was Pike’s Peak which never disappoints, to my right were wellmanicured lawns. With impressive security, I was welcomed into a lovely lobby and sitting room. As I waited for Jeanine Hamilton, Director of Sales and Marketing, who would introduce me to Bob and Julie Lord, I had time to observe the interaction between staff and residents. There was warmth, respect, and friendliness. (The Lords said Jeanine was a key component in their positive transition here.) When I asked Julie about one of her joys in living at Liberty Heights, she confirmed my initial impression. The Lords’ daughters had spent much time 26

One of Bob’s life philosophies is, “You need three bones in life – a wishbone, a funny bone, and a backbone.” researching and choosing Liberty Heights, so when the Lords made it their home in 2017, they had not seen the facility until they moved in. Julie bragged about her daughters’ great discovery. “I felt a friendliness of the staff and other residents

immediately. We are so blessed our daughters picked this place.” Bob and Julie met as college freshmen in 1953 at the University of Northern Colorado in Greely. Bob had just returned from the Korean

Conflict and fell in love with Colorado as he passed through the state on his way back. He wrote his parents and told them he had fallen in love with Colorado and wanted to attend college here. Bob and Julie raised five children. Bob coached for 59 years, nine of which were with the Green Bay Packers, the New York Giants, and the Chicago Bears. I asked Julie what it was like to be an NFL wife and mother. She said if their two boys were showing a need for discipline, she would tell the boys, “The Coach is coming home so you better behave!” Bob says the family was so blessed by a “wonderful, nurturing mama.” Bob retired at age 83. His Kawasaki Vulcan 500 was transported here from their former home in Atlanta, Georgia. Bob laughed and said, “We put the motorcycle in the moving van first! Then we chose what furniture we would bring.” He still enjoys a leisurely drive up Highway 83 to Parker on beautiful Colorado afternoons. The

two shuttle to the YMCA in Briargate three times a week for the “Silver Sneakers” program. Liberty Heights’ monthly calendar keeps them as busy as they chose to be – A band, “Mixed Nuts,” recently provided entertainment. “We knew most of the songs and could sing along.” There is also a shuttle available to the residents, a fitness room, indoor swimming pool, art studio, and physical therapy provided on campus. Each home has a security button that the residents push every morning to let the staff know “everything is ok!” Bob shares a typical day. “After the demands of a coach’s life, not only on him but on his family, we now have time for that second cup of coffee. We work crossword puzzles together and are both avid readers. In the winter, we turn on the gas fireplace and watch the snow on Pike’s Peak from our living room window.” On one of the walls in their home is a family tree of photographs, beginning with their parents. “We spend a lot of time

praying for our family whose faces are always before us. I believe prayer is one of the most unused gifts God has given His children. We have found great contentment here.” I asked Bob about his adjustment to his new home. “One thing I miss is Julie’s cooking, she’s a great cook, but the Liberty Heights Chef offers many great dining selections.” Continuing a lifelong commitment to seeing the needs of others, they have many ministry opportunities here. “Sometimes we dine with someone who has just lost a spouse or needs a new friend. We have enjoyed meeting and getting to know others from all walks of life.” One of Bob’s life philosophies is, “You need three bones in life – a wishbone, a funny bone, and a backbone.” The Coach and Julie, a Denver native, have found a home at Liberty Heights. In the glow of this beautiful love story, it was hard to end the interview with this gentle and loving couple. Julie will tell anyone, “Our cup overflows!”

Hormone Replacement Therapy For Women Balancing Hormone Levels to Promote Optimal Functioning By: Ryan Cole

A

s we age, our hormone levels naturally change and fluctuate. Women certainly expect to experience physical and mental changes throughout their lives. From adolescence to post-menopause, it is the purpose of tiny messengers called hormones to usher the maturing female into multiple stages of maturity. But, what happens when this process is interrupted or goes awry due to an imbalance in the hormones testosterone and estrogen? At Apollo Medical Associates, we want to provide you with the information you need to determine if our hormone replacement therapy programs for women are right for you. Women carry a lesser amount of the hormone testosterone than men, but, its presence contributes to a healthy sex drive and a general sense of wellbeing. It is produced in the adrenal glands and ovaries of women and plays an important role in strengthening muscles and bone while increasing brain functioning. By the time a woman reaches her 30s, her testosterone levels have dropped significantly below optimal levels. The hormone estrogen is most dominant in women. It is primarily responsible for many of the functions that are unique to women, along with reducing lean muscle and body fat, improving vaginal lubrication, and stimulating the growth of endometrium during menstruation.

William Shatner Live Long and... William Shatner has a philosophy for his life: “Like the great comedian George Burns, who lived to be 100, ‘I can’t die as long as I’m booked.’”

By: Josh Cates

F

ew performers today can boast of the type of nonstop career William Shatner has had. His successes range from early critical acclaim on stage, through the launch of the now-beloved classic, Star Trek, and through numerous films and awardwinning turns for TV shows such as Boston Legal. More than six decades on, William Shatner is still going strong. Actually, stronger than ever. He could retire and live out his life comfortably without ever having to work another day in his life. In his new, unforgettable book, LIVE LONG AND…What I Learned Along the Way (Thomas Dunne Books, on sale September 4, 2018, $26.99, written with David Fisher), Mr. Shatner responds to that thought – Why would I? “Mr Shatner is someone I’ve had the desire to profile on the pages of Living Well Magazine for years,” says Publisher Joshua Cates. “When his publicist was kind enough to send an advance reader copy of his newest book, I instantly dove into the content and finished the book in just two days. From emotional scars left by an abscent mother to being in the Shatner & Thunderbolt 30

COLivingWell.com

right place at the right time, Mr. Shatner opens up to his readers in Live Long and...What I Learned Along the Way. In 2016, Mr. Shatner faced the unexpected: An apparent diagnosis of prostate cancer. Multiple tests thereafter proved a false-positive, but the wake-up call rang in his mind. In taking stock of all he had accomplished, he realized there was still more to do. He is a man driven by the passion of his passions. In explaining this in the book, he reveals that this thought process is more than just romantic yearnings of “passion.” He is driven by such interests as his decades-long work with horses and his Hollywood Charity Horse Show, his motorcycle ride across America to raise funds, and of course, performing. The man lives to put on a performance. For example, in one case where he was intent on making it to the stage on time, Mr. Shatner drove overnight through a snowstorm in 2016 from New Jersey to Illinois to perform his one-man show after East Coast flights were all cancelled. And this was after the producer in Illinois told him it was perfectly understandable if he couldn’t make it. William Shatner made it.

However, his early years growing up in Montreal were a struggle for his immigrant family. Being tight for money was a given. But from those early difficult years he learned about combining hard work and taking care of your family with sharing and caring for others in need, and discovering that the most generous people are often those with the least means to do so. This openness about his background and doubts lends such a richness to Mr. Shatner’s latest book. The all new, never before told stories and remembrances are often hilarious, but the exposed soul of the man catches the reader in unexpected ways.

For all the applause and fan adoration, this beloved and internationally-acclaimed actor, writer, director, and producer still finds himself facing self-doubts and worries. Fear of being broke, fear of loneliness – not the type of worries you would chalk up to such an iconic persona.

William Shatner has worked as a musician, director, producer, celebrity pitchman, and most notably, award-winning actor for more than six decades. Of his many roles in film, television, and stage, he is most recognized for his role as Captain James T. Kirk on Star Trek from 1966-1969, seven Star Trek movies, and for his Emmy and Golden Globe-winning work in the role of Denny Crane on the TV drama Boston Legal. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Elizabeth.

LIVE LONG AND…is full of touching stories from Mr. Shatner’s unique life. Combining subtle humor with a surprising and revealing candidness, he lays out his amazing journey from childhood to star, spanning more than eight decades. As he says, the secret to a good life – keep living.

The cover from his newest book Live Long and... just released September 4th Fall 2018

Lifestyle Portraits Profiling Your Neighbors Living Their Dreams

Scott Hartwig It was a trip to the Space Symposium in Colorado Springs that finally initiated their family move to the area in 2012. By: Josh Cates

A

veteran of the US Air Force and US Navy, Scott is originally from Michigan, but lived his working career in Houston Texas, as a true rocket scientist who worked at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) on the NASA Space Shuttle, and the International Space Station (ISS) programs. Scott studied Aerospace Technology at Arizona State University, where he obtained a commercial pilots license. His original job with the shuttle program was to establish the best time to launch the shuttle, when to perform on-orbit maneuvering, deploy satellites, and when to land the Shuttle. He later became the Program Manager for the ISS, and recently retired as CEO for United Space Alliance (USA), the prime contractor for the Shuttle program. He tells Living Well Magazine that in 1997, he was asked to be the Director for Space Shuttle Astronaut Training. “This was the best job and leadership challenge I had at my time in Houston at JSC, and I was privileged to work with some of the most talented people in the world. Through escalating levels of responsibility, Scott was exposed to more opportunities to learn about quality leadership. An avid fly fisherman for over twenty-years, Scott began to see the commonalities between leadership and fly fishing. 32

COLivingWell.com

In 2010, while attending a leadership class at Notre Dame, a question was posed from the facilitator, “Scott, where do you see yourself in five years?” His answer was “I see myself fly fishing in a Colorado stream” to which the response was “How is this going to help the world?” Scott’s off-the-cuff answer…“I will help people learn more about leadership through fly fishing and encourage those people to help others to do the same.”

It’s these experiences that he now brings to his new company, and also offers in guest speaking opportunities upon request. He recently spoke locally at the Center for Creative Leadership, Trout Unlimited, and the Angler’s Covey Fly Shop new guide class, where Scott considers himself fortunate and privileged to work as a fly fishing guide alongside an outstanding group of professional anglers and guides at the Covey.

The response to the question formulated the forward path for his new company, Fly Fishing Leadership, founded in 2016, and based in Colorado Springs. Going a step further, Scott developed a full curriculum for the course, and is now working on a book illustrating the values that are common between fly fishing and leadership. He offers classes that use fly fishing as a vehicle to reinforce the lessons, values, and attributes found in high quality leadership. He is available for any type of team or leadership development facilitation activity, and brings a uniquely different tackle box of tools to the training.

Ironically, it was Scott’s attendance at the Space Symposium in Colorado Springs, and the many visits here throughout the years, with his wife Glynis, that finally initiated the genuine interest to relocate and move his family from Texas to Colorado in 2012. Scott’s goal is simple, “My business was started to make people more successful as leaders. Fly fishing is such a great opportunity for reflection and is spiritually and physically therapeutic. It’s as if fly fishing restores and refreshes our perspective on life, allowing us time to refocus and clarify our purpose and priorities.”

Getting Help from a Financial Professional Making sure you choose the right one

A

re you less than 10 years from retirement? Unsure about whether you’re on track with your savings and investments? Finding yourself with new responsibilities, such as the care of a child or an aging parent? Facing other life events, such as marriage, divorce, the sale of a family business, a big move, or career change? Too busy to become a financial expert but needing to make sure your assets are being managed appropriately? What is your plan for the next “Bear market” (AKA periodic cyclical downturn)? Or maybe you simply feel your assets are not allocated to your present goals. These are only some of the many circumstances that prompt people to contact someone who can help them address their financial questions and issues. The truth is, almost everyone needs a financial professional at one point in life or another.

Why is good advice so hard to find? According to a 2016 study by investment firm Loring Ward; with more than 302,000 financial advisors in the USA, only 122,000 advisors have a fiduciary duty to act in the best interest of their clients. Let that sink in! 60% of advisors have zero obligation to put your success in front of their own. Since almost anyone can call themselves a “financial advisor,” it is critical that you understand what to look for in your trusted advisor 36

COLivingWell.com

and what questions to ask before starting a relationship.

What to look for? It is imperative that you perform your own due diligence when choosing a financial professional. You should be weighing multiple factors while researching potential investment professionals; such as experience, professional designations, and education as a whole. For instance, you may see financial professionals with the Certified Financial Planner™ designation. What does this mean? A CFP® refers to the certification owned and awarded by the Certified Financial Planner™ Board of Standards, Inc. The CFP® designation is awarded to individuals who successfully complete the CFP® Board’s initial (4 Es – Ethics, Education, Experience, and Exam) and ongoing continuing education requirements. Individuals desiring to become a CFP® professional must take extensive courses and pass exams in the areas of financial planning, taxes, insurance, estate planning, and retirement planning. Professional designations are a great place to start, but should only be part of your overall consideration.

Making the most of a professional’s expertise.

practice concentrate in a particular area? Have they ever been disciplined by any government board or regulatory agency?

· You’ll need to

understand how a financial professional is compensated. Some receive a fee based on an hourly rate (usually for specific advice or a financial plan), or on a percentage of your portfolio’s assets and/or income. Some receive a commission from a third party for any products you may purchase. While still others may simply receive a salary from their financial services employer. Don’t be reluctant to ask about fees; any reputable financial professional shouldn’t hesitate to explain how he or she is remunerated.

· Don’t be afraid to ask

· Don’t let yourself be

you need. However, give yourself a deadline for your decision so you don’t get caught in “analysis paralysis.”

investors, if you think your financial life simply needs a checkup rather than a complete overhaul; you’ll need to clarify the areas in which you’re looking for assistance. Be very specific on the services you require and don’t feel pressured to fit into a cookie cutter program.

· Even if you feel you need

detailed advice from several different specialists — for example, if you own your own business — consider whether you might benefit from having someone who can coordinate among them.

7.

A financial professional can be a gateway to other professionals who can help with specific aspects of your finances, such as accounting, tax and/or estate planning, insurance, and investments.

!

Last, but certainly not least, make sure you tie your financial professional’s advice into a goal. It is deeply rooted in our psyches to be goal oriented. How can we stay on track or for that matter, how can we make adjustments without a clear and concise direction? As Yogi Berra eloquently stated, “If you don’t know where you are going, you might wind up someplace else”.

Why work with a financial professional? A financial professional can apply his or her skills to your specific needs. Just as important, you have someone who can answer questions about things that you may find confusing or anxiety-provoking. If you don’t feel confident about your knowledge of investing or specific financial products and services, having someone who monitors the financial markets every day can be helpful. After all, you hire people to tend to medical issues, it makes sense to get some help when dealing with important financial issues. Even if you have the knowledge and ability to manage your own finances, the financial world grows more intricate every day as new products and services are introduced. Also, legislative changes can have a substantial impact on your investment and tax strategy. A professional can monitor such developments on an ongoing basis and assess how they might affect your portfolio. A financial professional can help you see the big picture and make sure the various aspects of your financial life are integrated in a way that makes sense for you. That can be especially important if you own your own business or have complex tax issues. If you already have a financial strategy in place, a financial professional can act as a sounding board, giving you a reality check to make sure your assumptions and expectations are realistic.

Strategic Financial Partners specializes in creating and developing quality relationships with our clients by providing coordinated financial solutions to help clients reach their personal and business goals. LEARN MORE AT www.balancecolorado.com Have you ever had an event happen in your life that made you question everything that you had previously been taught? I was trained in "traditional" Chiropractic. I was taught what I believed to be advanced procedures of adjusting where we "popped and twisted" the spine, used electrical stimulation, ultrasound or massage therapy to relieve pain. These modalities were mostly effective until they proved drastically ineffective on the person I cared for most. Six years ago, my significant other, Paige, suffered a head injury that caused her health to significantly decline. In our darkest hour, we found Foundational Correction. Unlike traditional Chiropractors who focus on increasing range of motion and decreasing pain, Balance Chiropractic focuses on correcting your body’s foundation, which are the spinal bones closest to the brain. Quiz: What does your brain control? EVERYTHING! If this fragile area shifts, it can cause many secondary conditions (symptoms) to occur. Our goal is to be measurable, objective and reproducible. We utilize 4 measurements throughout the entire process to track whether your body’s foundation is within normal limits or not. Paige has regained her health and we are committed to helping others do the same. If you have struggled with health concerns that modern medicine or other healing techniques haven’t helped, please consider giving Balance Chiropractic a chance to help. Give us a call to set up your Complimentary Consultation. It’s a conversation, NOT a commitment. (719) 265-0115

Is Deion Sanders the Greatest All-Around Athlete of our Generation? The Only Athlete to Play in Both a Super Bowl and a World Series

42

COLivingWell.com

“2 Legit 2 Quit” Deion Sanders, Pro Football Hall of Famer and current NFL Network Analyst is the only athlete in history to play in the Super Bowl and the World Series. In September 1989, Deion hit a major league home run for the New York Yankees and scored a touchdown for the Atlanta Falcons in the same seven-day period and is still the only athlete to do so. As a young man, this bandana-wearing, jewelry-flashing athlete blasted onto the sports scene at Florida State, playing football for the legendary Coach Bobby Bowden. Coach Bowden once told TMZ Sports that Deion Sanders was the best athlete he ever coached. Most people would see playing just one collegiate sport as a major accomplishment, but Sanders, a multi-talented athlete, led the Florida State Seminoles baseball team to a fifth-place finish in the nation and a conference championship as a track and field athlete. Deion played 14 NFL seasons for five different NFL teams. He has two Super Bowl wins, playing for the 49ers over the Chargers in SB XXIX and the Dallas Cowboys in SB XXX, playing against the Pittsburg Steelers Known for his blazing speed and “larger-than-life” persona, Sanders was famously quoted before his NFL Combine 40-yard dash as saying, “I don’t need to stretch before I run – do you see a Cheetah stretching before he gets his breakfast?” The story of his 4.27 blazing fast time is continually embellished, but folklore and rumors say that after running his second of two passes, he ran right out of the tunnel into a waiting limo that took him straight to the airport. Motivated by excellence, Deion is a man that understands that the power of greatness starts from the inside out. From his physical and mental health to his faith and willing himself to win, he tells Living Well, “It could be dominoes, checkers, football, anything I try to do - I try to do with everything I have. “I am so blessed to have people in my life that have challenged and supported me. Charles Koch has been a great business mentor to me. Spiritually, my Pastor Omar Johwar is a rock. And the two women I look up to the most are my mother and grandmother- who doesn’t drive but has traveled to every place she’s ever desired to go! One promise I made to my mom early in my career was to make it possible for her to retire.” When asked about his greatest moment as a professional athlete, Deion didn’t hesitate in his response, “It was the day I told my Momma she would never have to work again a day in her life.”

HIGHLIGHTS Played 14 seasons, 188 games on 5 different NFL teams (Atlanta Falcons, San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys, Washington Redskins, and Baltimore Ravens). Widely regarded as a “shutdown corner” during his career. He was named first-team All-Pro nine times at cornerback in addition to receiving All-NFL acclaim by some media outlets as a kick returner in 1991 and as a punt returner in 1998. He was elected to eight Pro Bowls during his career. Won two Super Bowls during his career – San Francisco 49ers over the San Diego Chargers in SB XXIX and Dallas Cowboys win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in SB XXX. 2011 Pro Football Hall of Fame Inductee.

“Your mouth and your attitude are two devices that can kill your dreams, wants, and needs. Watch what you say and be conscious of your attitude at all times!”

“Prime Time” was a moniker, a created figure of Deion’s brilliant mind, with one sole purpose. It was not for his own fame and glory, but to create an image of a man who was so beyond the current spectrum of sports that gravity could not hold him – an image, a tagline to achieve a greater purpose. Deion’s driving force was to become that image in reality and achieve the ability to allow his mother to escape from a long life of hard labor. The “Prime Time” image not only relieved his mother from 44

work but would bring this man to the center of the sports universe with a stellar legacy that continues today. Playing professional sports was his career, but there is much more to Deion than just his sports legacy. He calls himself “A Way Maker” – a conduit that facilitates great and wonderful things for those he surrounds himself with, the communities and people he serves. These days, Deion gives much of his time back to working closely with youth sports, to help bring up the next generation

of players. When asked about the time he spends mentoring, he tells us, “God has blessed each of these young men and women with a tremendous gift, whether it’s football skills, education, or other talents. I tell my kids, ‘If you exhaust the talent you’ve been blessed with, then you will realize success.’ They are arrows just waiting for us to point them in the right direction. It’s our responsibility to give them the opportunity and tools for success.” A gifted public speaker, Deion says, “I really don’t think of my-

self as a public speaker, but rather a communicator.” Known for his early morning Instagram speeches after his morning runs, Deion simply takes a thought and expands it – telling Living Well he never writes anything down. Deion’s legacy continues on and off the field. One son is well on his way to building a successful career as an entrepreneur, two sons are still in high school, both garnering attention from the sports world because of their talents. “One is a senior and one is a sophomore,” Deion says. “I give my kids wisdom and Fall 2018

explain the pros and cons of each situation, but it’s up to them to make their own decisions. I don’t want the credit for a good or bad decision. If it’s their course to play pro-ball, I’m proud, but only if they get their education.” I was curious to know what Deion thought of being back in Dallas for the first NFL Draft to be held at a football stadium (not the typical New York City). “My favorite part, whether at Dallas, NYC, or anywhere the draft is held, will always be going into the green room and seeing the families who have the lottery ticket in their hand and are moments away from hearing their number called. When I see their faces light up, all the hard work, all the naysayers, all the negativity, and ignorance is done now.” One new project Deion is involved with is RESTORE Hair Restoration Products. Deion explains, “When I stumbled across my dear friend Brian Urlacher, he told me about RESTORE Hair Restoration and I thought to myself, ‘Man he looks much better – I could look better too.’ I sought out the program and it has completely changed the way I feel, the way I look, and it took years off my appearance. I have always believed that it’s very hard to lead by example if you’re not physically, spiritually, and mentally fit. This program has enabled me to raise the bar and help others to benefit as I have.” The most lasting impression of our interview, was when I asked if Deion had ever been nervous about anything. His response, ”Why would I be nervous about the gift I was given! All that means is that I’m ill-equipped or not prepared.”

LIVING WELL READER QUESTIONS Living Well Magazine (from Randy in Colorado Springs): “Deion, what was your favorite moment as a pro football player?”

Deion: My favorite moment as a player was the day I retired my mother for the rest of her life. Living Well Magazine (from Justin in Colorado Springs): “Deion, outside of Jerry Rice, who was the best route runner you faced, and secretly, whose route stem/get off scared you the most?” Deion: Henry Ellard was one of the best route runners in the game. I was never afraid. It was the guys who could score from anywhere on the field that you had to watch. Living Well Magazine (from Rocky in Dallas): “As a long-time Cowboys fan, I loved watching you play! What was it like to play for Jerry Jones and America’s team? Deion: Jerry Jones is a phenomenal asset to our game and to my personal life. He embodies what a family is. When you see his kids running this multi-billion-dollar business it’s unbelievable. What he has done with his family is unbelievable and I appreciate that he has been a consistent friend.

He looks forward to working with his new practice and helping people with their eye health for years to come. His specialization in this niche market was what brought him to the attention of Colorado Springs’ very own Dr. Archdale

After graduating from the University of Missouri in 1997 with his doctoral degree, Dr. Cutler began his career in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he moved to be close to his brother. After a few years of practicing, he headed back to the Midwest with his wife and children to purchase his childhood optometry practice in Illinois. Through the years, Cutler built three different practices, growing his most recent to three locations with four doctors. Residing and working in the county of Well, Illinois, he found more and more patients being referred to him for contact lens fittings by nearby surgeons. The influx of contact patients urged Cutler to research contact technology and complete several certifications to make him one of the only contact lens fitting specialists in the state. His specialization in this niche market was what brought him to the attention of Colorado Springs’ very own Dr. Archdale, who has been practicing high quality eye care here for 25 years. Dr. Archdale swayed Dr. Cutler to move to beautiful Colorado Springs and bring his family and specialization to our city. Cutler found the quality of care and examinations, top notch equipment and

Ensuring My Care Decisions Are Followed By: Gloria A. Brooks, MPA, FACHE

E

very day can be challenging when someone you love is coping with a serious illness. For members of the Sandwich Generation - adults who are caring for their parents while still having young children to take care of and a career to balance- it’s a reality they juggle daily. The majority (55%) of people with elder and child care responsibilities are between 28 and 42 years old with parents in their 50s and 60s.

Challenges include: Financial:

Almost one-quarter of Americans have cared for an aging parent in their home, or financially provided for a parent. This number will only increase as there will be more than 70 million Americans aged 65+ by 2030.

Distance:

7 million adults are caring for an aging parent from a long distance. Summer months: Those with young children have trouble finding a reliable sitter, struggle with paying for additional daycare, or worry about children left home alone.

Decline in personal health:

A decline in the caregiver’s health is often the result of caring for an aging parent while balancing children and work. Caregivers often report having one or more chronic conditions like high blood pressure.

Moving a parent:

Often there comes a time an adult child has to ask his/her parent to move into a nursing home, assisted living facility, or move in with them.

Social connections:

Many caregivers have to make personal sacrifices, including giving up hobbies, going to church, or socializing, because they are too tired or don’t have time. 50

With a goal to live each day to the fullest, conversations about what care is wanted as we age are important to have early before a health crisis occurs.

As you think about how you want your own care decisions to be followed, it’s a natural time to discuss this with parents and spouses/partners. Start thinking about how you’ll care for your parents as they age. Do you know who they want to make decisions for them or what kind of care they want and don’t want? Take time now to research options, then talk about these care wishes with family, friends, and physicians and, most importantly, document them to make the process easier and less stressful when a health crisis occurs. As a caregiver, remember to place your health first. You cannot take care of others if you are not well. Changes in appetite, irregular sleeping patterns, or withdrawal from friends and family are signs of caregiver burnout. Learn to cope with stress by journaling your experiences, becoming more physically active, and developing your own relaxation techniques. Support groups can offer an outlet to vent frustrations and find alternative ways to deal with stress. Maintain open communication with your aging loved one and your family. You may consider holding regularly scheduled family meetings to keep everyone informed on your loved one’s condition and discuss ways in which others can help. Resources and support available include Pikes Peak Palliative Services which provides pain and symptom management for those living with a serious illness. We understand the uncertainty, but also the hope, that accompanies being a member of the Sandwich Generation.

hat do you do when you have a disease that has not been well-controlled with therapies that already exist? You are not alone; this is a conundrum that affects many patients and physicians. Where should you look for the answers to these questions? At Peak Gastroenterology Associates, where our focus is YOU, we believe the answers to these questions lie in the future; not a distant future beyond your reach, but in future therapies that are being evaluated right now, right here, locally. Peak Gastroenterology Associates wants to make sure YOU have options to improve the quality of YOUR life. We have invested in a research department and are participating in over 40 national and international clinical trials to advance therapies and options for patients across the globe. The immediate benefit of this, however, is local, for YOU, our patients. We are involved in clinical trials involving Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, hepatitis C, fatty liver disease, H. pylori bacteria, gastroparesis, and so much more. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are autoimmune conditions where your own immune system attacks your digestive tract, causing symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, rectal bleeding, obstruction, or more. Crohn’s disease can affect any part of your digestive tract whereas ulcerative colitis is essentially limited to your colon. These two diseases 52

COLivingWell.com

can also affect other parts of your body including your joints, skin, eyes, etc. Both of these diseases can be extremely debilitating and sometimes difficult to control. We now have options that can change YOUR life. Hepatitis C is a virus that can affect the liver and have long-term consequences such as cirrhosis. It can also have consequences in other organs. The cure rate of hepatitis C now approaches 100%. If you have hepatitis C, we have multiple studies YOU can consider. Get cured! Fatty liver disease is now the most common cause of chronic liver disease. Just like we accumulate fat on our bodies, we can also accumulate fat in our liver, which can lead to complications such as cirrhosis and even premature death. We have studies that cannot only measure how scarred your liver is and how much fat you have in your liver but also medications that can help get rid of this fat. Ask YOUR doctor to test YOU for this. H. pylori is a bacteria that can sit in the stomach and lead to abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, inflammation, erosions, and ulcers. It can also lead to stomach cancer. We can usually cure you of this bacteria with some antibiotics. We have some clinical studies looking at new combinations of antibiotics to easily get rid of this bacteria. If YOU have these types of symptoms, call us. Gastroparesis is a condition where YOUR stomach does not empty as quickly as it should. Various things

Not finding the answers?

can cause this but the most common include diabetes, hypothyroidism, medications, viruses, etc. This can lead to abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, bloating, and getting full quickly. This can negatively affect YOUR quality of life. Dietary modifications and medications to help speed up the emptying of the stomach can help, although these medications come with potential side effects. Another experimental approach includes gastric pacemakers, but these have not shown to improve symptoms significantly. We are participating in clinical trials that could really help mitigate YOUR gastroparesis symptoms. Beyond this, we have additional studies.

At Peak Gastroenterology Associates, we are focused on YOU and delivering the type of care YOU deserve to lead a healthy life. We want to make sure YOU have all available options to get well, whether we reach into the past for therapies that have worked, whether we treat you with medications currently available, or whether YOU need future therapies now. If you are interested in learning more about the national and international clinical trials we are participating in, please give us a call at (719) 362-2281 or email us at kpatel@peakgastro.com. We are always here to guide YOU and educate YOU. Our ultimate goal is to help YOU reach the quality of life YOU deserve. At Peak Gastroenterology Associates, it’s all about YOU!

Falling Back into a Good Night’s Sleep Like the change in fall colors, many people begin to experience a change in their sleep pattern during the fall and winter months.

C

olorado will soon be seeing fall foliage sweep across the state with the change of seasons and before we know it, fall will be in full swing. Like the change in colors we’ll be seeing, many people begin to experience a change in their sleep pattern. Although it affects people differently, the majority of people may feel more tired or restless in fall and winter compared to other times of the year. To help keep drastic sleep changes at bay, understanding why these changes may happen and how to combat them may help ease the symptoms. Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, is brought on by the lack of sunlight we experience in the late fall and winter months. Though it only affects anywhere from 10-20% of people in a mild form, a change in any person’s Circadian Rhythm – think of it as an internal body clock

that is maintained by the exposure to light – can affect sleep patterns heavily and can cause fatigue and an increase in irritability. The side effects of SAD may be eased by making seasonal adjustments to a sleep schedule that a person can stay committed to, even on the weekends. Changing the bedding to fit the season (Think: fleece bedsheets in the colder months) and the sleep environment to make it relaxing can also help offset the side effects. Staying active outside to make the best use of the available sunlight can help as well to get back into a normal sleeping routine. An increase in ragweed in the fall months and the cold and flu germs circulating well into the winter months can also cause a change in sleep for anyone – even if a person has not directly fallen ill with seasonal allergies or the flu.

The DaVita Medical Group Sleep Center helps to diagnose and treat health problems that can make it hard to get a good night’s sleep. Sleep Studies • in lab, overnight studies • home sleep studies

Sleep Disorders • breathing disorders • periodic limb movement • hypersomnia • insomnia

During these months, the body is working over-time to attack any illness that may come its way and could prompt an inability to get a good night’s sleep. Keeping up with good general hygiene, like washing hands, covering the mouth when sneezing and coughing, and limiting what is being shared between other people, can help people stay healthy especially during these months which can also help them maintain a better sleep pattern. Many factors go into whether or not a person is getting the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep per night. If sleep is becoming an issue, either sleeping too little or too much, seek out a doctor who can help shine attention on issues that may cause concern and create an individualized approach to a solution that can help get a sleep schedule back on track.

Robert (now affectionately known as Bob for short), a 1-year-old Boston terrier, came to Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region as a stray. Admissions staff took one look at him and realized he needed to be seen by our veterinary team immediately. Robert’s right eye was twice the normal size and falling out of its socket, possibly a result of chronic glaucoma. Due to the severe pain caused by the condition, our veterinary team had to remove the eye. The surgery took about an hour, but we knew as soon as Robert came out of anesthesia he was feeling so much better! Robert made a speedy recovery and was adopted right after he made an appearance on one of our local television station’s pet of the week segments. Robert is pictured above shortly after adoption in the driver’s seat, with his sister riding shotgun. His mom writes: “So happy Robert is fitting right into the family!” THROUGH YOUR SUPPORT, WE ARE ABLE TO PROVIDE ANIMALS JUST LIKE BOB THE EXTRA LOVE, ATTENTION, AND MEDICAL CARE THEY NEED. Ditch the Profile Search A New Approach to Dating

I

n January of 1999, I moved to Colorado from the Midwest. Not knowing anyone in the Rocky Mountain state, to fill my time and meet people, I jumped into the many outdoor sports this vast place has to offer. Learning to mountain bike, snowboard, hike 14ers, and snowshoe, I even competed in adventure races for a couple of years. I fell in love with Colorado but found my “love life” less than adventurous. Struggling through the rigors of online dating, I found the experience frustrating and expensive. In addition to my outside activities, I was also the owner of a pet and boarding store, so the time it took to wade through profile after profile was time I didn’t have. In talking with friends of mine, I found their experiences very similar to mine. I have a degree in Psychology and Sociology, so my training in human behavior and social groups naturally led me down a path to find a solution to a problem many single people face in looking for meaningful, long-term relationships. Hence, #1 Matchmakers was born.

Our goals in working with clients are: • Coaching clients through the process to create a fun and successful dating experience. • Understanding their relationship goals. • Identifying and providing compatible matches. • Accepting clients that we feel we can successfully match. • Quickly responding to their questions and communicating with them in a transparent way. • Treating each client with respect, empathy, and professionalism. • Maintaining the highest ethical standards. • Providing background checks on all clients. • Offering affording pricing.

My business idea was to approach matchmaking in a different way, a more personal approach - an experience in matchmaking that coaches clients through the process of dating that provides security and ease. We understand each person is an individual with different characteristics. We do the work for our clients by building relationships with each individual and “handpicking” each potential match. We also customize the first date. Our dating consultants are dedicated to providing every client with a comfortable, fun matchmaking experience. Part of our program includes an annual “members only” party event and two fun outings. You can contact us at (719) 888-9713 or check us out online www.1matchmakers.com We also have franchise opportunities available in other cities.

Happiness starts inside your mouth. By Tameeka Smith, CEO of SmileHealth

O

ral health has more of an impact than you might think and neglecting yours can have some serious side-effects. Your mouth matters, so much so that not taking care of it properly can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, diabetes, stroke, arthritis, obstructive pulmonary disease, preterm labor, and low birth weight. Poor oral health can affect whole-body health, and because of that it’s associated with mortality risks on par with smoking: oral disease brings a 45-85% increased risk of death, independent of other causes. Most don’t realize how critical dental care is, and the numbers prove it, with only 65% of adults going to the dentist every year. Among children, cavities are the most common chronic disease, outranking both asthma and allergies. “It’s astounding,” says Tameeka Smith, CEO of SmileHealth, “Around half of us suffer from periodontal disease, but the vast majority of us are unaware.” Proper dental care prevents oral disease and helps to preserve overall health. Unfortunately, not everyone realizes just how important dentist visits are, and various barriers hold them back from scheduling routine appointments. For a lot of Americans, the hassle of booking can be frustrating and the cost of care can be intimidating. Oftentimes, it’s hard to know which dentists are providing the best treatment or offering the most affordable prices.

“Proper oral health is vital to a productive and healthy life.” Dr. Regina Benjamin, US Surgeon General 2009-2013

We should all invest in our oral health - its tied to our overall happiness. So, what’s the solution? “It’s time we start taking care of ourselves,” says Smith. “We should all go to the dentist and invest in our oral health - its tied to our overall happiness.” Smith is at the center of a growing Colorado-based dental health and technology movement that works to overcome the obstacles that have prevented easy access to quality dental care in the past. SmileHealth is working to make dental different for the future. “Innovations in oral health care and technology allow us to overcome the barriers that have held back too many of us for too long,” says Smith. Health leaders like Smith are raising awareness that affordable, high-quality dental care can improve the whole-body health of hundreds of thousands of Coloradans. “People may not know how affordable good dental care is in 2018. It’s time for everyone to give themselves the care they deserve.”

Stand Out and Live Large Local Designer Reveals Contemporary Mountain Home in Broadmoor Resort Community – A Stunning Re-Imagination Story By: Nancy Kay White // Photography By: Don Jones, Studio 9 Commercial

A

s Scott and Rhonda Taylor drove into the driveway of their new Broadmoor Resort Community home, those of us inside could barely contain our excitement. Rich Schell of Rich Schell Interiors and his design team had been anticipating this moment for over five months and hosted a reveal party for fifty-five family and friends. Shortly after the Taylors had purchased the home in the beautiful community 60

above the Broadmoor, they handed over the keys, giving complete design license to Rich before heading back to Naples, Florida. “This was a beautiful gift from the Taylors and a dream job for me - an opportunity to be trusted to transform their new home as they had re-imagined it,” said Rich. “As we began the transformation, I would send Rhonda small teasers - pictures taken at close range with my camera - so she only saw a small corner of something I was working on. It was fun for her to try and figure out what it was.” As they walked through the front door, it

was the first time they had seen the house since January. Scott tells Colorado Springs Living Well, “Throughout the design transformation, we were able to talk with Rich many times along the way. He had a solid understanding of what we wanted and also understood the home. We had high anticipation as we gave him ‘a blank sheet of paper’ and waited to see what someone with this level of talent could do. At the beginning of this ‘great adventure,’ we had no idea how spectacular the final reveal would be!”

“I see every job I do in design as distinctly different. I prefer a curated collection of interests so that no one is pinned into any one look. Stand out and live large,” says Rich.

(ABOVE) “His” office is filled with family memories, childhood toys and a rare collection of Coors pottery from the 1930’s (LEFT) Douglas Logue, Logue Design, Inc., crafted many of the custom pieces, including the large credenza and coffee table in the living room, the buffet in the dining room, and the furniture for the master bedroom.

Close friends of the Taylors had enlisted the Colorado Springs designer to do the interior of their home at the Broadmoor Residences. “We were so impressed with Rich’s work. We felt he had insight of who our friends were and who we were that would help him design our home in a way we would love. It was a good ‘working example’ for us,” Scott said. “He chose everything - art, accessories, furniture, and even utility items like glassware and silverware.” Beginning the design process, Rich

brought 100 fabrics to Rhonda and Scott, asking them to pick their ten favorites. They went for splashes of bright colors - teal, purple, blues, but also soft tans and grays. The fabrics chosen laid the foundation for selecting furnishings. Rhonda said, “As we walked through our new home, it was fun to see the vision Rich had for taking these fabrics and choosing a spectacular application for each.” Rich was familiar with the house, having worked with the previous owner. Rich comments, “The organic architectural elements

of this house, including dry stack stone, industrial open steel beams, and douglas fir ceilings, were a stunning background as I worked to create a palette for the softscape elements – furnishings, textiles, art, and accessories. “Pashmina,” a Benjamin Moore paint, was chosen for the walls. “I use this color on many jobs, it is a ‘chameleon color,’ a sophisticated neutral with green-gray undertones, that beautifully adapts to the surrounding colors.”

Bryan Brassard constructed the downstairs gameroom booth.

Rich choose a soft metallic patina wallpaper for the master bedroom. The bed linens are in soft hues of tans and creams, creating a sanctuary feel to the master bedroom and completing the retreat of luxury.

There is a graceful flow to the home, but each room boasts individuality. Originally, there was a homework station in one corner of the game room. Rich transformed it into “a kind of speakeasy” with a built-in booth that surrounds a large rotating game table. The Taylors have four children, three of which live in the Denver area, so Rich wanted a space for this family to create lots of happy memories together. “I chose a fun element - life-size resin sheep – to complement the lower level landing,” Rich says. “It was an eclectic choice I made, not realizing it would evoke unexpected emotion from Rhonda. She grew up on a farm, her parents raised sheep, and it brought back memories of her childhood. It was a personal

moment shared between designer and homeowner, a fun choice that resonated in a way I was not anticipating.” Schell uses local artisans like Jodie Bliss, a Colorado Springs metal artist, who used hand forged metals to create the custom planter and leaf foliage in the entry of the home, creating beauty without maintenance. Jodie also captured Rich’s design idea, ”Aspen Forest,” in the base of the large glass-topped dining room table. Barely noticeable, Jodie wove into its base a small iron bird nest, only seen by the most observant. It was a surprise, one of many, that spoke of the detailed planning that went into every element of the master plan. “We have such admiration for these artists and their work, but also love

the fact these pieces were created uniquely for our home,” Scott said. “There have been many influential design styles throughout history. I love the challenge of working within each of these periods. Every chance I have to be challenged with a new style, I ignite with a desire to study that style and begin the process of providing my client the best possible look that neither of us may have expected,” says Rich.

ADVANCED DENTAL CARE

Another Amazing Makeover

I

n recent years, deployment of our troops to the Middle East has been a common occurrence. Often times we hear about the casualties of war, but too often, the episodes of day to day combat are often left unspoken, yet not without its consequences. Many of our troops return safely and unharmed, but not all. Too frequently, we hear of soldiers who are bombarded by small arms fire and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) while along routine patrols. Broken bones will usually heal quite well, but head traumas, a common injury resultant of IEDs, can have a lifelong effect. Not only can there be permanent brain damage, physical impairment, and PTSD, but also these soldiers are usually medically discharged and left to find careers outside of the military. This can be devastating for those who, from the time they were a youngster, only wanted to be a soldier.

Enter Michael. Originally from Indiana, Michael was an E1 when he served his first deployment to Iraq in 2006. There he was hit by IED’s and a white phosphorus grenade and also encountered countless small arms engagements while on reconnaissance missions. Michael survived those injuries only to again be deployed, this time, to Afghanistan in 2009. Again he suffered injuries from a vehicle rollover; a head injury resulting in trauma to his brain. Michael suffered a head injury, and trauma to his brain again. Michael received excellent treatment by doctors at Ft. Carson, but in 2013 he was medically discharged. 64

COLivingWell.com

By: Dr Joe Rota

Prior to his discharge Michael was referred to me for treatment of sleep apnea…..and that’s how we met. After his discharge, Michael has continued to treat in our office, and with other health professionals, slowly improving his health. During Michael’s military career in the infantry he spent some time as a medic and enjoyed his experience. After much observation and further discussion, Michael joined our practice as a dental assistant in training; and has started a new career in dentistry. Michael has come a long way in the past six months, learning procedures that most dental assistants never experience. But most of all, he has seen how quality dentistry can change peoples’ lives and how important a healthy smile is to a strong self-esteem. Thus, Michael has decided to not only change his career, but change his life….over the next few weeks, we will be doing a major functional and cosmetic makeover for Michael and he has agreed to not only allow me to tell his story, but also to document the process of changing his smile….and changing his life.

The Beginning…...diagnosis and treatment planning Our first appointment is to collect information about Michael’s overall health, including his oral health. This includes a thorough health history, oral cancer screening, a gum survey, a complete set of x-rays and in Michael’s case a 3-D CAT scan to evaluate his jaw bone for implants and healthy jaw joint function. With this information, Michael and I, together, determine what he would like to achieve in his smile and the level of oral health he would like to obtain. Michael has decided he would not only like to have a great smile, but also, he would like to replace missing back teeth to maximize his function. This, then, will involve a complete rehabilitation of his mouth.

The next step is impressions of his teeth, taken to make stone models of his smile. The stone models are then mounted on a jaw simulator to represent Michaels’ existing bite. Then the teeth on the stone model are modified with wax to create Michael’s new smile and ideal function bite. This is called a diagnostic wax-up and is the first step in giving Michael a new smile A very important tool in creating a new smile for Michael will be a complete series of before photos of Michael’s smile from different angles, as well as his facial contours. Michael will then get to see his new smile on the waxed models, before starting any permanent changes. In many cases we can make acrylic temporaries of the waxed simulation to overlay on the existing teeth to give the patient a more exact preview of their new smile. This is called a mock-up. Once Michael approves the diagnostic wax-up, we’re ready to get started.

The Progression We’ll be documenting Michael’s progress on our website and our Facebook site. The next step will encompass a series of appointments to do the treatment. As we progress, we will show video and photos of Michael’s progression as we complete his rehabilitation.

BEFORE See our video interview of Michael and his progress towards his rehabilitation on our website at RotaDental.com Also see the finish in the winter issue of Colorado Springs Living Well.
