Natur is a group of rad dudes coming out of New York, playing heavy metal the way it should be played. If you haven’t heard of them yet you’re doing something wrong. Get ready, ‘cause they’re putting together a full album that’ll melt that shit eating grin off your face. S: Ok let’s start off with the basics, who’s in the band and what do they play? N: Ok then, Natur is consisting of The Mortal Wombat on Guitars and Incantations from beyond the womb, The Mexicutioner on low end 4 string Richard, Dino Slyder on Lead ginger trap, and little old me on the skin flute assault from hell! S: Where did you all meet? How did the band start up? N: Wombat and myself are from Rhode Island where we grew up Skateboarding and listening to Big World for the earlier parts of our lives. We played in a few bands from our town and eventually I assisted his band DEMASSEK on drum duties for a few shows. Later on meeting Bloodriguez through some mutual friends from wherever. Anyhoo we both moved to NY around the same time and started this fuckin mess. Turns out we needed some help in the lead guitar department and that is where Schwillbo Baggins came into the picture. That was when we became the band you hear about on the internet today.

S: I know I’ve seen some of you guys skating at the Autumn Bowl and just around Brooklyn, does everyone in the band skate? Would you guys say that skateboarding has had an affect on the band? N: Dino actually is the best skateboarder out of our little crew. He can flip flop all over the place! hah! anyway, I know that being around the older guys skateboarding and listening to Metal and Punk is probably how we all got involved in music to begin with, But we dont sing about doing inverts or anything. It has broadened our horizons as far as playing around the country goes, We always try to pencil in a few parks on our tours! S: You guys are signed to earache records, how is that going? Have they got you guys touring recently? if so, where at?

N: We did just sign to Earache, its going pretty cool at the moment. We are just trying to finish this friggin album. Lots of nice Mishaps during the past few months but we are almost done now. So thats good! They havnt got us on any tours so far Since we have no album to tour on, but we are planning out a few tours for ourselves in the coming weeks and months around the Eastern US and Canada. Just some small ones with a few KILLER bands of the Underground!

S: I saw you guys play in a viking ship last year at the Dennis McNett opening, how was that? Any out-of-theordinary shows like that coming up again? N: Oh man! that was a really cool one! it was pretty nerve racking at first because we were trying to fit everything securely in the ship and still be able to play properly. logan hill It all seemed good to go so we were really excited, But when it was time to set sail, the fuckin thing collapsed on it self and tipped over, everyone ran over and we blocked it up with some 2 x 4’s and screwed some shit into the wall, it was a nightmare, all our gear was flipped over and we only had about 2 minutes to sort it out before it was show time...we plugged in and went for it with the ship sticking halfway out of the door. It was fun! as far as freaky shows like that coming up, I dont know at this point but it would be cool! always in the market for doing some bizzare shit S: You guys got a full length album coming out? N: The full length is called “HEAD OF DEATH” and should be out by mid May on Earache Records. We got a few tracks that have never been heard on there as well as some tracks from our previous 7”s and Demo... We all look forward to unleashing it upon the planet. S: Any words of advice for the young ones out there? N: Listen to Black Sabbath? Thats pretty much the best thing you can do at this point. Next show: Mar. 1st at Public Assembly in Brooklyn, with Pilgrim, Windhand, and Magic Circle. facebook.com/NATURHEAVYMETAL

Brief History of Skateistan The idea of Skateistan began in 2007 when two Australians arrived in Kabul, Afghanistan, with three skateboards and quickly met a group of local boys and girls eager to learn how to skate. What began as informal skateboarding lessons at a local empty fountain turned into something much bigger. Skateistan took shape in the following years, with the help of international donors and skate industry partners. On October 29, 2009, the 1750m2 Skateistan Park officially opened, giving 320 boys and girls (ages 5-17) in Kabul a secure environment and an indoor skatepark to come to every week. Skateistan is Afghanistan’s first skateboarding school, with separate teaching days for male and female students, as well as classes for the disabled. It’s also one of very few recreational spaces for girls and young women in Kabul. The organization provides on-site loans of skateboarding equipment, shoes and safety gear. Skate instruction is given by experienced international skateboarders as well as some of the very first kids to step on a skateboard in Afghanistan, who now work with Skateistan as skate instructors.

What is Skateistan about? Skateboarding has been key in bringing together Afghan youth of all ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds, and the interaction is further built upon through classroom projects and discussion. The students themselves decide what they want to learn, while Skateistan provides them with the resources they need to develop skills and tell their own stories. Students spend an hour in the skatepark and an hour in the classroom. There are regular boys and girls classes, as well as a girls’ journalism class, a disabled class, advanced art classes, and a “Back to School” program. Topics explored in Skateistan’s last semester included the various aspects of environmental health such as water pollution, deforestation, and hygiene. Lessons include hands-on activities, art projects, games, photography and discussions encouraging students to think about their world and how to create positive change within it. Youth (under 26) account for 70 percent of the country’s population, and so the most worthwhile investment that can be made is to provide a space that encourages tolerance, a civil society built on trust, and opportunities for education. Furthermore, the absolute novelty of the sport means that there aren’t the social norms attached that prevent girls from taking part in other sports. Females aren’t supposed to ride a bicycle, and have virtually no recreation opportunities open to them. To give girls in Kabul a venue to exercise, have fun and play together is one of the most important reasons Skateistan was created.
