Remember those‌ The Great War is now consigned to the history books with the passing of the last veteran to survive those bloody trenches. Our fears, as the Second World War took hold, and more lives were lost and misery for those whose loved ones perished in the defence of our country. We fought to prevent the enemy from invading our shores and listened to the speeches made by our leader Sir Winston Churchill. The victory celebrations to mark the end of a conflict, the yearly tribute by our monarch and politicians at the cenotaph to remember those who fought and to those who are still giving their lives for queen and country. The world is still at war in places where we know little of their cultures and religions and to what end, oil, power, minerals, wealth, safety of our country, the peace we crave, or, are they defending their shores as we did seventy years ago? The media extend to us their versions of events, symptoms and the prognosis in a bid to acquire more readers and viewers. Whatever the politicians decide, we as nation are left to support our troops and those who have lost loved ones as Christmas draws closer.

Kaleidoscope Theatre Kaleidoscope Theatre, founded by Carolyne and John Revell as the first company of its kind, began life one foggy October morning in 1980. That Christmas saw the cast perform its first play before an audience of fifty. Six Years on began several sell out shows at the RSC’s Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon and in the autumn of ‘92 the company flew halfway round the world to the land of the rising Sun, to play in Yokohama’s finest theatre before an audience of one thousand. Original and highly acclaimed productions have travelled countrywide and abroad since and to many important venues. Alongside tours to the Edinburgh Festival over the years the company has participated in international festivals in Britain and in Budapest and played theatres which include The Crucible in Sheffield The Birmingham Rep and Jersey Opera House. Kaleidoscope’s young Thespians have made countless appearances on radio, television and in the press over the years and may have been spotted in a Touch of Frost on the small screen and in Shooting Fish and Titanic Town at the cinema. Kaleidoscope Theatre is a unique company having an integrated cast of players of all ages, from all walks of life and from all parts of the country. Eight members of Kaleidoscope (six of whom have Down’s Syndrome) live and work together all year around in a rambling house in Shropshire and they are joined by friends for rehearsals and performances. Each and every person involved is special. They come because they have a passion for theatre, because they believe in high standards of performance and the quality of life and, above all, they have a love and regard for one another. Teachers, students, actors, civil servants, TV directors, producers, ceramicists, piano tuner, osteopath, prison officer, Nurse, concert pianist, chartered surveyor, builder, mechanic, horticulturist, farmer, RAF engineer, vicar and postmistress have all been found, on stage or off, in Kaleidoscope Theatre. Since meeting Kaleidoscope Theatre several years ago David Bradley, Richard Stilgoe, Allan Tichmarch and Glenys and Neil Kinnock have performed in its plays with Wendy Craig often in the audience. 4

A production usually requires the creative efforts and co-operation of many people - scriptwriter, director, designer, players, backstage crew, costumiers, technicians, set and props builders, publicists, fund-raisers and administrators all of which would normally cost tens of thousands of pounds. As Kaleidoscope has little financial support everything is, quite literally, made in-house at Kemberton Hall. No one receives a salary or expenses. Apart from major shows, involving around twenty five people, the little troupe who live together also perform mime, cameos and dance dramas, run theatre workshops and hold presentations. Kaleidoscope can be found performing throughout the year for all kinds of organizations, for instance conferences and W.I.’s and at various festivals, fairs and museums (especially Blists Hill Victorian Town & Bewdley) and at National Trust places such as Attingham Park and SunnyCroft. Life with Kaleidoscope Theatre has set in motion a voyage of discovery for it’s crew. Together they learn of language, literature, legend, history, music, art, dance, drama, relationships and moral values. Long may it’s travellers seek adventures new.

Bewdley Brewery Great sounding names like “grist”, “wort” and “liquor” conjures up a bubbling cauldrons of fermenting liquids occupied by characters from legend like Merlin. On entering the microbrewery, situated on a small craft centre site in the heart of Bewdley, the light and airy Aladdin’s cave of wooden clad tanks holding the precious brew in its various stages of production, arranged like art from a Damien Hurst exhibition, holds liquid for various stages in the beers production. The smell of fermenting hops and the heady aroma of beer fills the air as the hiss and gurgle of the brewing process is under way. Dave Carr, Christine (Dave’s wife) and son Tim are all proprietors of this family business. Dave, brewer and proprietor, performs the tasks of finding the specific gravity and temperature with the enthusiasm and skill of a scientist creating the perfect elixir. The Process begins with carefully selected malted barley, which is ground to a grist and then mixed with hot water, in brewing technology called the “liquor” to form a mash. The natural sugars dissolve out of the grist and the liquid, now called “wort” is run off into a copper, where it is boiled with hops, which give the beer its characteristic bitter taste.

12

The “wort” is now transferred to the fermentation vessel and the brewers own strain of yeast is added. This fermentation process, lasting about five days, converts the sugar to alcohol and carbon dioxide. At the end of fermentation, real cask-conditioned beer is allowed to mature

your

Local Times

in conditioning tanks for a few days before being racked into casks, often with the addition of a handful of hops to increase the aroma and flavour, and sugar to encourage a strong secondary fermentation. It is the cask conditioning which continues to develop the flavour, character and maturity of real ale in the pub cellar until the cask is ready for use. A number of pubs around the Wyre Forest are now serving the beers and ales such as the Colliers arms at Rock and the Bell Inn at Pensax as well as the famous Mug House in Riverside north in the heart of Bewdley. Old School, Junior School and Senior School Ales conjurers up elicit drinking in public school dormitories where riotous enjoyment of real ale, would have been lost on immature pallets. Today those wishing to enjoy ale brewed in a traditional way can purchase it from the new Brewery shop to drink at home or by discovering the local hostelries which stock the Ales. Visit the Brewery website at www. Bewdleybrewery.com and see the full range of beers and the pubs where you can enjoy your local brews.

Des Taylor

TheBig Fish Angler Extraordinaire

Des Taylor was born 1951 in the Black Country but has lived in Bewdley for the past 25 years. He moved to this area so he could fish the River Severn for his favourite species the roach and has taken many of this species to specimen size in that period. But Bewdley is only his base for Des writes a weekly column in Angling Times and has done for the past 20 years talking of his adventures around the world where he has taken such notable fish as an African Record Dusky Shark of 660lbs, four Great White Shark over 1,000lbs, Tarpon to 185lbs and Halibut to 245lbs and nearer to home he has taken 30lb Pike, 30lb Carp, 200lb Skate and 7lb Eels indeed the list is endless. When we interviewed Des here at the Times we asked him what ambitions he had left to which he simply answered “just to continue travelling around the world catching fish and enjoying myself”. Des is planning a trip to Norway very soon after huge Cod and then off to France hoping to catch a world record Carp. But wherever he has travelled and whatever he has caught Des loves nothing better than sitting on the River Severn near his home in Bewdley fishing for roach or barbel and will admit the Severn Valley is the place he will live for the rest of his life. Des also owns the well-known bait company SBS Baits which is based in Kidderminster where Des spends at least four days a week helping make bait and serving in the factory shop. “I love speaking to the local anglers and helping them catch more and bigger fish” said Des. So if you fancy a chat and some special SBS Baits why not pop down there to the factory shop and have a word with Des at Unit 27 Meadow Mills Industrial Estate, Dixon Street, Kidderminster, Worc’s DY10 1HH or go onto the website www.sbsbaits.com

18

Des will be writing a monthly column in the Local Times from next month where he will take a look at the coming month and will give you a few tips that will help you catch a lot more fish. Sounds great!

Picture Framing Studio and Gallery opens in Mamble Ignore all the doom and gloom in the news at the moment. Georgina Instone is. She is opening a new Picture Framing Studio and Gallery called Cross House Arts. It will be located in Mamble, opposite the Sun and Slipper pub. The Studio will be officially opened on Saturday 31st October at 11:30 by Mamble’s own No. 1 best-selling author, Eve Seymour (Author of action thrillers “The Last Exile” and “The Mephisto Threat”) so why not go along and enjoy a free glass of wine or beer as well? The opening celebrations will be going on from 11:00am to 5:00pm on Saturday. Georgina has been successfully selling her picture frames on the internet for the last 3 years (www.PictureFrames-UK.com) and has decided to expand to encourage more local business. She says “I enjoy helping my customers to find the best frames for their artwork or photos. I am always amazed by the different effects that framing have on a picture. As Claude Monet said – “A picture gains a hundred percent in a fine frame“ and he should have known!” As well as an excellent and fast framing service there will be framed prints and original artwork for sale at the Studio. Normal opening will be limited to Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10:00am to 4:00pm as Georgina plans to manufacture the frames during the remainder of the week. Go and have a look. 38

Humble Beginnings… Ever dealt with a business and wondered how they started, how long they’ve been running and why they decided on their particular product or service ?? Well, we get asked several times a month – “Why did you call it The Zoo ?” So, to appease all our customers and for the curious among you, I hereby give you ( theme tune to Star Wars ) THE ZOO – ORIGINS. Back in early 1999, after a number of years in fitness and exercise, my wife decided to take a ten-week diploma course to become a fully qualified Personal Trainer, but at the time she was working in an office and so accepted she would have to leave the job. Long discussions followed on how to replace her income and it became obvious early on that it fell on me to put something in place ( especially as the course was 12 months condensed into 10 weeks plenty of studying and homework of course ). During a 3 hour stroll around Clent on a lovely sunny evening, we thrashed out the options, but it was blatantly obvious that it had to be something I could do weekends and with a healthy interest in computers, movies and video games, the computer fairs held in and around the Midlands seemed a good place to start, so we signed up with Excalibur Computer Fairs, our first venue was Birmingham NIA on July 24th 1999. Prior to this, we had to give our “temporary” company a name… Once we accepted the weekend computer fairs were a good place to set up shop, we had to decide what we were going to sell; computer parts, printers, blank discs, laptops – the list was endless. At the time we’d been buying movies on VCD ( Video CD ) from Singapore, this was prior to the DVD revolution and considerably cheaper. So, did some research on the internet and found a company who were happy to supply us and with a device called a Movie Card, which attached to the Playstation games console and software for the PC called Power VCD, we opted to go down that route as I felt the PC market would have been well and truly sewn up already with longestablished traders. This was a new venture that nobody else had touched on, so I figured it would give us the edge. We set up a film library and charged a small membership fee plus a nominal rental charge – needless to say the concept worked very well and in a short period of time, we

46

realised we had our hands on something special, but what about the name !!!!!! I love playing with words and so went thru’ a brainstorming session with words usually associated with movies – Oscars, Sequels, Trailers etc and literally filled a sheet of A4, but the one that stood out was ZOOM ( zoom lens ? ). Liked that - short, sweet and maybe intimated that we give a fast service, but it lacked any indication of purpose, so it evolved – ZOOM, ZOOM MOVIES ( too much emphasis on the M ), ZOO MOVIES, ( tied us down, wanted something “portable” ) ZOO. This was then refined to THE ZOO and thus history was made. Since then, the company logo was based around the name and ten years later, here we are…..
