Welcome…

Christmas is coming and we’re looking to feature a top local Chef or Cook who can give us one of his/her tasty recipes for our mag. Food and beating the blues (feeding the mind, body and soul) in preparation for the festive season is already a running theme in this edition. That’s because whether we like it or not, we’re all bracing ourselves for “the season to be merry!” Christmas! Shakespeare wrote ‘if music be the food of love play on’ so if you’ve got some great recipes for us or a musical event, or any delightful Christmas goodies you’d like us to feature in our bumper December issue drop us a line to editor@yourlocaltimes.co.uk

DEADLINE next issue:

A big thank you to Hooty’s, the Severn Valley Railway, the Ramada Hotel and Waitrose, for continuing to support our magazine. We’re already getting snowed under with bids for the special Christmas edition (it’s looking like it might be a white one!) - so if you want to be included, get in touch soon! We welcome all your feedback.

Stanley Baldwin I was glad to see your article on my grandfather Stanley Baldwin. I wonder if I am being over-sensitive in detecting a hostile slant in the writer’s account of his career. His wealth is twice referred to. But surely the most striking thing to know is that Baldwin donated a fifth of his fortune to the Treasury at a time of crisis, amounting to several £millions in today’s currency, which must be unique; and that he was a prodigious giver-away of money, not least to his work-force. The “demands” of the workers in the General Strike were in effect to hold the democratically elected Government to ransom: and what Baldwin also “refused” was to let the state be drawn into an industrial dispute. His reputation as a conciliator had soared in 1925 when he killed a Bill from his own side designed to oblige workers to contract in to and not out of a union; this was the context of the 1927 Act referred to when pressure, exacerbated by the General Strike itself, grew

4

too strong for him to resist a measure which to many people seemed fair. To say that Baldwin was criticised for ignoring Germany’s preparations for war is accurate, but only half the story. Not to say that this criticism has been refuted by most leading historians over the last 30 years, and that Baldwin is acknowledged in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography as the chief architect of rearmament, leaves a false impression. He was in fact the dominant politician of his age - sometimes referred to as the Age of Baldwin - not merely an influential one. And in fact he wrote no books at all. His medium was the voice, not the pen, and editions of his speeches (which the writer was probably thinking of) sold well. Other errors, such as the spelling of Macdonald and the suggestion that Baldwin “inherited” a directorship, are minor.

Earl Baldwin of Bewdley 8th October 2010.

Your Portraits Deserve the Best from an Award Winning Photographer After twenty-five years as a photographer my wife Debra has now joined the business. Over the years I have won over thirty awards both in wedding, fashion and portrait photography, but these days most of our photography is baby, children, family, pets and weddings. From our cosy studio in Lax Lane, where we have been for over twelve years, we can accommodate large groups of up to seventeen people, with a large car park and on the ground floor, few studios have such facilities. Our easygoing attitude we find relaxes the client and gets the most out of the subject.

10

Dogs too are great to work with, sometimes included in the family sessions or as a portrait on their own. Being a qualified photographer with The Master Photographer Association we guarantee some fantastic portraits for that special occasion. Go to our web site at www.thepicturebox. co.uk where you find a gallery of photographs and some of the testimonials from our satisfied clients, or call us on 01299 405181. Books We Like ‘The Silver Linings Playbook’ by Matthew Quick

The Silver Linings Playbook is the riotous and poignant story of how one man regains his memory and comes to terms with the magnitude of his wife’s betrayal. It is a touching and funny story that helps us look at both depression and love in a wonderfully refreshing way.

‘Brixton Beach’ by Roma Tearne The island is Sri Lanka, with its community on the brink of civil war. Alice’s life is about to change forever. Soon she will have to leave for England, abandoning her beloved grandfather, and accompanied by her mother Sita, a woman broken by a series of terrible events

“American Wife” by Curtis Sittenfield

On what might become one of the most significant days in her husband’s presidency, Alice Blackwell considers the strange and unlikely path that has led her to the White House–and the repercussions of a life lived.

“A Simples Life – Aleksandr Orlov” by Alexander Orlov Aleksandr Orlov has in the last year become one of the most loved figures in British culture and his catchphrase - Simples! - can be heard from the playground to the office. Written in his inimitable voice (as dictated to his sidekick Sergei), his autobiography will offer the same humour as his TV ads 12

Bewdley Farm Shop

Local Fresh Produce to your door

With Christmas fast approaching many of our local residents will be thinking of planning the festive lunch. Who may be coming to dinner and what to serve them are upper most in the “chef’s” mind. Traditionally many of us serve the roasts and the vegetables so obtaining the ingredients is upper most in the shoppers’ mind. Using local suppliers who deliver will take some of the strain out of fetching heavy bags of shopping laden with fruit and vegetables. You can rely on the produce from Bewdley Farm Shop who deliver to your door. Established for twenty-five years in Bewdley, Tony has been supplying locals and visitors with fruit, vegetables and fish for some time so he should know how and when to select his produce for sale. At Bewdley Farm Shop we are committed to providing fresh, unadulterated food, produced without damaging the environment, selling local products wherever possible. Also, we aim to provide

food at prices affordable by customers with a real interest in good, healthy food. ‘Local’ has become another of those magic words. In an ideal world, food would be locally grown, locally processed, locally sold and locally consumed. However, purists do accept that with some foods the principle of ‘local food’ can only require that the processing of the food should be as close to source as possible. So, while most of our vegetable suppliers are local, selling locally grown crops, especially vegetable, fruit and salad suppliers, may sometimes have to import goods from other regions. As well as vegetables, fruit and salad we also supply eggs, fish, jams, Honey and flowers and at Christmas the traditional nuts and wreaths. With a free delivery service, throughout the year, quality produce and an established Green Grocer, Bewdley Farm shop delivers on taste, price and freshness.

Bonfire Celebrations It has often been suggested that Bonfire Night on November 5th became the Christianised version of the old Celtic fire festival of Samhain (Halloween). In England however, Samhain traditions were seldom practised and the commemoration of the foiling of the gunpowder plot was merely a decision taken by parliament in 1606 to mark their safe passage through the events of 5th November 1605. It was therefore declared that everyone should attend a church service to give thanks for the prohibition of such a crime and became so popular in Protestant England that by 1625 great bonfires were being held with effigies of Guy Fawkes burned. Strangely however, Guy Fawkes was not burned for his crime but was sentenced to be hung, drawn and quartered. Ironically this was a fate which he managed to escape by flinging himself from the high

scaffold, resulting in a broken neck and ultimately depriving parliament of their revenge.

Carole Carlton is a lecturer, writer and author on ancient spirituality and complementary therapies. Her first book, ‘Mrs Darley’s Pagan Whispers’, outlines the eight major Pagan festivals (Prehistoric and Celtic) as they fall chronologically throughout the year. Carole can be contacted via her website: www.arcanus.co.uk or follow her blog www. mrsdarleyspaganwhispers.blogspot.com

“My fun, girly night in with Vicky” – by Rebecca Pearsall Vicky sells Aloe Vera Forever Living Products. But as a fully qualified Beauty Therapist she offers home parties with a difference. She uses her expertise as a therapist and can offer makeovers and facials as an extra element to the evening. We tried lots of different products and Vicky explained the benefits as we passed them round to try. At no time did we feel any pressure to buy and I didn’t feel like I was being sold to in any way. Vicky’s a natural and is very passionate about the products. She’s also very knowledgeable and knows how to best tackle different skin complaints.

28

I’ve been impressed with all the products I’ve tried. A

major benefit of trying new products from Forever Living is the fact that all the products carry a money back guarantee. Some of my favourites were the liquid soap, the Aloe lips and my Mum found the moisturizing lotion has really helped her eczema. But overall, it’s the Forever Bright Tooth Gel wins top prize as far as I’m concerned. Having been a smoker for the last 12 years I’ve tried all kinds of whitening toothpastes but none of them compare to the Aloe gel. I think it’s well worth the money. In a matter of weeks you can really see a big difference!

Aloe Vera Party

I’d recommend having an with Vicky to any of the girls I know – she’s a natural and we had such a fun girly night in! Thanks Vicky. Contact Vicky on 07972 – 199559 to book your party or find out more about Aloe Vera Forever Living Products.

Holistic Healing & Beating the Blues

Do you know what I’ve got in common with Beethoven, Churchill & Vincent Van Gogh? The clue is what Winston Churchill called the dog he could never shake off; his ‘black dog’. Yes, that’s it, they’ve all suffered from depression. In fact it’s so widespread that doctors now call it the common cold of emotional disorders. There are lots of reasons for depression and at this time of year many call it the ‘winter blues’. For chronic depression there are effective prescription drugs but for mild to moderate depression there are plenty of strategies and therapies out there to help you. Everyone’s different. What I suggest is you look for help from as many recommended and professional sources as you can. And what I would say is,

They help you to relax and find yourself again. “Thank you Sue. I believe in myself once more because of the restorative effects that heal mind, body & soul, from a unique multi-sensory experience.” Sue Shaw, Kidderminster. Here’s some more suggestions for ‘beating the blues’:Work it out Regular exercise is a powerful mood enhancer. All you need is 20 minutes of aerobic exercise 3x a week. Food can change your mood Eating the right sort of foods for your body type is important. Get the advice of a good Nutritional Therapist (*see Sara Dover article in this magazine*). Eating fish 3x a week can help as it contains Omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for normal brain function. Low levels of B vitamins have also been linked to depression. Put it in down in writing Research has shown that people who regularly put pen to paper improve their psychological well-being. Lift your spirits Go to church, meditate, seek guidance or find whatever nourishes your soul. Research has shown people who do this are far less likely to be depressed. Get a good night’s sleep People who sleep well have high levels of serotonin. Learn how to really relax. If you are unable to wind down then seek help. Bewdley in Bloom Awards So the gardening year was rounded off at the Awards Ceremony at the Guild Hall and proved to be a success. Gardeners tended and cosseted their gardens and blooms for the accolades of a place on the winners rostrum. The Mayor presented the trophies and certificates emblazoned with the winners name as each went up to accept their prize with pride. The children from the winning school, dressed in their uniforms, jostled for position as the prize was handed over and the resident photographer positioned them for the customary photograph. The raffle was drawn to the delight of many, and the members of the committee served the tea and scones. Back in the gardens of Bewdley, plans are afoot to create yet more masterpieces with the hope of winning the Bewdley in Bloom competition. A big thank you to the Bewdley in Bloom organisers for all their hard work but let’s see more gardens entered next year. Contribution by Your Local Times Magazine

The Harriers IF ever proof was needed that hard work equals reward, then Kidderminster Harriers player Matty Blair provided it recently.

The former AFC Telford winger joined Harriers in the summer, signing a non-contract arrangement with a view to impressing sufficiently to earn a more permanent deal. After waiting patiently for his breakthrough into the starting eleven at Aggborough Stadium, Matty has taken his chance with both hands - scoring three goals in four starts, including his recent brace in the 3-2 win over Grimsby. His work has been rewarded, as boss Steve Burr has secured his services on a permanent contract until the conclusion of the 2010/11 campaign. Burr said: “Matty has worked really hard to earn himself something. “You cannot always be in a position to dive in and throw contracts around but now, having stepped up, he has done tremendously well. “But as we have said with Ollie Thorne and a few others, it is important that Matty keeps pushing on and doesn’t sit back - that is the test.

“I’ll be on his case all the time to keep doing that and he is someone

who is hungry and wants to play football and to do well. “He now has a bit of security and it is good for him and good for us.” Congratulations go to Matty and all the Harriers players for their recent good performances.

EXCLUSIVE COMPETITION

If you want to see one of Harriers’ home games during October, you can do so for FREE, thanks to Your Local Times. We’ve teamed up with the club and can give away two free match vouchers for any home League match this season; and all you have to do to win them is answer this question correctly:

The Big Fish Angler Extraordinaire

Time for grayling - the lady of the stream In an era where catching big carp or the putting together of a 300lb bag of small carp in five hours is seen to be the pinnacle of angling ability lots of anglers would find it strange why I am travelling over a hundred miles for a fish that generally weighs under 2lbs and a true monster is over 3lbs. That fish is grayling and for me the species is not all about weight, although I do want another three pounder, but it’s about the whole experience of a day out grayling fishing. You see grayling are generally found at the head of the rivers I fish - rivers like the Wye, Severn and Teme. There you are in “Gods country” as we say in the Black Country, which means the scenery of the countryside does not get any better anywhere in the world. Deep cut valleys with fast, cold and clear water running through them. For hundreds of yards there are shallows with water barely deep enough to cover a decent stone but then the water slows as the river deepens - that’s where the grayling lives, especially the big ones.

42

A typical big grayling from the Upper Wye What a delightful fish to catch on a winters day

As you fish these pools buzzards, ravens, kites, dippers and even the chance of a “real wild” otter working the bank, especially if you arrive early when the frost is still on the ground. Now I am not a romantic writer but I am a romantic angler and a day spent fishing in such countryside are the best days of my angling life. Such was the day last week on the Upper Wye where there can be fewer grayling but big ones which is what me and my grayling mate Simon wanted. It’s actually very hard fishing trotting a float for six hours with only a dozen bites and ten of those will be from small brown trout. But trotting a 2 swan chubber through the swim with the aid of a centre pin is great fun in itself. There is something very satisfying about putting a float with the maggot, corn or worm bait down the swim at the same speed as the flow yes anyone can fool a suicidal six inch trout but a big grayling is something else. My kit is a Grandeslam 10’ Pellet Waggler rod, a perfect length for these small waters where you can virtually jump across. The rod was designed to land pastie carp but as I say it is perfect for this job. Why is it most match rods are 13 & 14ft, why not make shorter match rods? I use 3.2 main line float fish from Drennan and a 2.6 bottom usually with a size 18 hook attached although you can catch grayling on a big hook and a bunch of maggots I have found the lighter line and small hook approach has found the bigger fish although it has to be said on such tackle a big grayling is a real handful in the flow of the upper river but that’s what adds to the experience! On the day in question I took this magnificent grayling of 2lb – 12oz now who wants to go carp fishing in a muddy puddle?

Whitlenge diary November To add a bit of pizzazz to the autumn garden we are planting Callicarpa and Gaultheria, both have the most striking berry colour. Callicarpa bodinieri var. giraldi grows to approximately three metres tall so needs to be at the back of the border but is very easy to maintain as you only prune lightly to retain the shape. It ha s unreal looking clusters of purple berries that are marvellous in flower arrangements.

Ivy flowers late in the year and is a welcome source of nectar for many insects and butterflies. It is a easy screening plant and provides shelter and nesting sites for birds and other creatures too. Use to cover walls, fences and pergolas, a very undemanding evergreen it only needs a tidy up every few years. Don’t be too hasty to tidy or trim off Hydrangea heads as they will give you soft, autumn tones for a long time yet. Some say they actually protect the plant against frost so it’s worth waiting. Pick a few blooms for the house and let them gently dry out in an inch or so of water. Once dry they can be used in displays and Christmas garlands.

Gaultherias have shiny white, pink or red berries depending on the variety and are also evergreen. They relish acid soils so create a bed using ericaceous compost. The female plants provide the berries so you will need a male to pollinate them for fruits next year.

Even in Shakespeare’s time English summers were tricky “Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summers lease hath all too short a date” so lets be ready when and if it arrives to enjoy every minute. 44

Movie Madness - Part 2 ...and so VHS was born.

Even so, despite JVC launching their VHS machines in 1977, this was not the first attempt to lure punters into the wonderful world of home TV recording. The first home VCR to become widely available was the Phillips Video Cassette Recording System, released in 1972. However, the first system to be successful with consumers was Sony’s technically superior Betamax in 1975 and so with the onset of VHS a format war began. There were a number of factors that dictated this; length of recording time, availability of movies and overall cost ( in fact a third format was introduced by Phillips called V2000, which allowed users to record up to 8 hours on one tape, by allowing content on a dual band tape similar to an audio cassette, but by the time it was released, VHS was too well established and topped with a number of mechanical problems, it died an early death ! ) The early Betamax machines could only offer a recording time of 60 minutes, whereas VHS units could handle up to 120 minutes, so despite the lure of higher resolution and the reputation Sony had developed for quality consumer electronics, it was ultimately the maximum record time that swung the vote in JVC’s favour, topped with the support of every other manufacturer of consumer electronics jumping on the bandwagon. In the UK, we ultimately had access to the Betamax L-830 tapes ( 3 ½ hours ) whereas VHS offered us the E-240 ( 4 hours ), doubled up by halving the tape speed - long play !! Of course, with longer tape times came inferior picture quality, but we didn’t seem to care, the prospect of storing maybe two full length movies on one tape ( Woopy Doo ) was too tempting. There was an attempt to compensate for the drop in quality by the introduction of VHS-HQ, where a typical video drum housed four, or even six heads instead of the conventional two. VHS machines were available through the high street rental chains such as Radio Rentals and DER (most of whom were owned by Ferguson Electronics, who were part-owned by JVC, the inventors of VHS), while Beta was seen as the more upmarket choice for people who wanted quality and were prepared to pay for it. By 1980, out of an estimated 100,000 homes with VCRs, 70% were rented. 46

This event spawned the huge video rental business that flourished in the 1970s and 80s. Being able to watch Hollywood movies at home was a major innovation that transformed consumer habits and allowed people to see older “classic” films that had been buried in the vaults for years, at this point, Betamax had only 10% of the market, even though it had a bigger following in other countries..... Our thirst for watching the latest blockbusters in the comfort of the living room kept growing, but what of video tape, soon to be eclipsed by DVD ( Digital Versatile Disc )?? Well, the last Sony Betamax was produced in 2002. Although VHS is still available in VHS/DVD combination units, the last dedicated JVC VHS unit was produced in 2007, video tape RIP long live DIGITAL !! The DVD Video format was first introduced by Toshiba in Japan in November 1996, in the United States in March 1997 (test marketed), in Europe in October 1998, and in Australia in February 1999. However, 1993 saw the release of the VCD format ( Video Compact Disc ), which pre-empted DVD by five years. So, what is VCD you might ask ?? Phillips, as always, tried to jump-start the format in this country with the release of their CD-I platform and even Commodore with their Amiga CD32 machine, needless to say they never took off due to the proliferation of video tape and also, it was not possible to easily record to a compact disc, unless you are using a CD Writer. This technology proved to be financially prohibitive when released in the UK so it was not a cost effective alternative to VHS / Betamax. In the Far East, things were a little different. Due to high humidity, tape based systems were impractical as magnetic tape becomes brittle in such an environment, VCD flourished !! Quality-wise, a VCD was intended to be on a par with VHS resolution, but did, in fact use half the horizontal scan lines (VHS: 330x486 VCD: 352x288) plus a typical movie would be spread over two or even three discs due to storage restrictions of the CD format ( 700 MegaBytes ). To Be Concluded Next Issue

Preparation + Practice = Performance Have you ever heard that fateful question “Would you mind saying a few words?” and desperately hoped that they were intended for someone else? But, of course, you are the intended victim. “Well, um, er, yes, er … thank you, er, well…” It is difficult to know what is worse; being asked to make a short speech without any warning or being asked in advance so that we have plenty of time to progress from nervous to terrified as the moment approaches. At Stourbridge Speakers Club we practise impromptu speaking to prepare us for our unexpected moment in the spotlight. How can we practise impromptu speaking you may well ask? The answer is to come along to one of our meetings to find out! Usually, of course, we know well in advance that we are going to make a speech or deliver a presentation. So what do we do? It is easy to put it off and wait until the day before to start preparing. However, according to one professional speaker, a 5-minute speech needs 20 hours practising! So, if we want to put on a professional performance, the message is we need plenty of time to prepare what we intend to 52

say and then to practise it. Over and over again. Think about all of the training that a sportsperson does. Why should we think a business presentation or a talk to the WI needs any less effort? If we have spent time preparing our material and then rehearsed its delivery, we are going to feel much more confident. If we feel more confident, in turn, we will deliver a much more professional performance. And even if we are asked to make an impromptu speech, training for that moment will help us enormously. HSE Ladder Exchange 2010 in partnership with Stourport-based Attic Access Group Is your ladder right for the job? Are you using an old pair of step ladders to get up into your loft? Don’t let a shoddy ladder shatter your life, exchange it today and receive discount on a brand new fitted loft ladder. The concept behind Ladder Exchange is simple; anyone who has any type of ladder which is broken, damaged or unfit for purpose can exchange their ladder and receive discount against a new one. Attic Access has installed hundreds of loft ladders that have allowed families to unlock their roof space. Owner, Jon Dunlop says, “Most people are surprised when I tell them that up to 30% of the space in their home can be in the loft. With an Attic Access loft ladder you can put your items out of the way, but still access them quickly, easily and safely whenever you need to. All of our products meet British Standards and come with a very reassuring 10 year guarantee.”

Testament to the quality of the product and level of service, more than 25% of sales across the business come from customer referrals. “Also satisfying is that we are now starting to see our original customers come back and have extra flooring and shelving as they continue to value their loft space in the current housing climate” says Jon.

For more information about The 2010 Ladder Exchange and to find out how you can save money on a fitted loft ladder please contact Attic Access on 01299 823902 or visit www.accessyourattic.co.uk For further information, visit http://www. hse.gov.uk/falls/ladderexchange.htm Ladder Exchange runs from 1st September to 30th November 2010.

Professionally recorded and produced, the CD suits all and includes swing, Latin, ballad and funk, and includes five popular big band vocals. WYJO’s musical director Ian Hattersley commenting on the CD’s success: “It’s been a personal labour of love producing the CD. On behalf of WYJO I would personally like to thank everyone who has helped make this CD possible.” All profits from the CD’s sale will go to fund WYJO’s proposed South of France tour next year. Hitting the right note with many, The Horn

Ultimatum has already featured on local radio, with sales proving very popular amongst jazz lovers across the region. Ranked one of the finest jazz groups in the county, WYJO continues to build a loyal following amongst jazz music lovers. When Print matters The importance of first impressions, on meeting a customer for the first time, when you hand over a business card, advertising leaflet or your first purchase orders. Your literature should be showing your customer the quality of your products or services they will be buying. So what should we be paying for quality printing? If you aren’t using Your Local Publisher for printing, then you are paying too much for it. Anyone can get a print quote, which will beat the next, and so on, but to cut a cost, quality of the print or the paper has to suffer. I have been associated with the print industry for some years and have seen some large companies go to the wall, all due to having to beat an estimate just to get the job.

For the past year the company that has printed our magazine, Your Local Times, has clients that include many large companies, agencies and educational prospectus. So whether you need a business card, invoice pads, flyers or leaflets, magazines or newsletters we would be pleased to give you a quote.

Eventually, this will leave only the companies who are serious about producing quality printed products. To set up a print company with Heidelberg presses, stitches, folders, artwork to plate software and the associated costs of units, staff and material costs, the company needs to concentrate on giving the customer the best quality products for the most competitive price.

Don’t get caught out – make sure you are on the Electoral Register Residents in Wyre Forest are being urged to safeguard their chance to vote in next year’s District Council elections by registering this autumn. The plea comes as the annual canvas draws to a close, where local authorities in Great Britain have been delivering electoral registration forms to all households. District Council elections will take place next

May and there is also a proposal for a national referendum on changing the voting system for Parliamentary elections. To vote in the election and referendum, eligible residents must be on the electoral roll. All households in the District should have received a voter registration form from the Council by now. It lists all the people who are currently on the electoral

register for the address. Electors are asked simply to add anyone who should be registered and is not on the list and cross out anyone who no longer lives at the address. Children under the age of 16 should not be included but anyone who will be 18 by 30 November 2011 should be added. The form should be signed and returned to the council as soon as possible.

BEWDLEY CHRISTMAS LIGHTS FESTIVAL Saturday 27 November from 2.00 As usual we are expecting about 70 stalls, both trade and charity, so there are lots of opportunities for everyone to buy that special present and also at a time when finances are so stretched to support many of our local voluntary organisations. There will be lots of Christmas music from choirs, bands and fairground organs and also this year there will be a performance from the winning band in the competition being run by Sunshine Radio who will be in front of the HSBC bank with their double decker bus. Any local groups wishing to enter should contact Hayley Duce at Sunshine Radio as soon as possible. Also new for this year is the ‘Circus Skills Workshop’ which can be found at the top of Load Street by St Anne’s Church, everyone is welcome to have a go. If you are hungry, don’t worry, there will be lots of refreshments available from mince pies to a pig roast. At 5.00 the Christmas Parade will get into position by Bridge House and will set off at 5.15 led by the children’s Nativity group, the civic dignitaries, bands and other organisation and , of course. Santa. Part of the parade is our annual Fancy Dress Competition , this year we want lots of teenagers and adults to take part and the theme is SUPERHERO’s, so don’t be shy, come and have a go. Challenge your friends and neighbours. ‘Go APE’ have kindly donated vouchers as prize. There will also be a category for younger children. All entries must be at the bridge by 4.45. The town lights will then be switched 60

on at 5.30 by the Mayor with the help of Santa. Events and music will continue with the Sunshine winning band and stalls will close down from 6.30 so please stay in the town and enjoy the atmosphere. In the week leading up to the Christmas Lights Festival there will be an exhibition of Festive Advent Wreaths in St Anne’s Church, any organisation or business who would like to make an Advent wreath to represent both Christmas and their organisation should contact us for more details. The exhibition will be open from 20 November to 28 November so please call in to the church, have a look and have a coffee. Starting on 27 November will be the Christmas Tree Trail and this will run for three weeks until 18 December. All you have to do is pick up a leaflet from any participating shop, visit all the shops listed and get you entry signed at each, then vote for your favourite tree and put your entry into any of the PACT boxes which are located at The Hub, The Library, the Medical Centre, HSBC Bank, Far Forest Stores, The Bewdley School, the Youth Cafe and the Police Station. We will draw a winning entry from those submitted and also give a prize to the shop with the most popular tree.
