Welcome… Summer is now just around the corner and Bewdley is looking forward to its share of tourists and visitors. Let’s hope we can entice more visitors here this year by showing them what Bewdley has to offer. The regular visitors to the caravan parks, hotels and the bed and breakfasts know what it has to offer but spreading the word will be its key to its prosperity. Our web site tries to do this. The West Midlands Safari Park and the Severn Valley Railway attract a great number of visitors but the smaller attractions like the Bewdley Gallery with its fine art, run by Trevor, the Chocolate Shop, run by Dee, and Phil’s Deli to name a few all contribute to the town’s wealth. Bewdley, this month, will have a new grocery store to complete with the Co-op and let’s all wish them well in this new venture. Featuring local businesses and local people is what Your Local Times is all about. It’s your magazine and it’s local so make the most of it by contributing with any interesting facts and features. We are featuring the Old Bake House which belongs to Granny Brown and I shall look forward to knowing a bit more about the history of Bewdley. Coming Attractions 2009 Heritage Run Sunday 7th June 2009
This year the Arden MG Club’s Heritage Run will take place on Sunday 7th June 2009. The Heritage Run is an extremely popular event attracting between 150 - 200 MG cars. The Run has finished somewhere different each year with the final destination being selected for its historical or transport related interest. Past Runs have taken us to the site of the MG factory in Abingdon, the Cotswolds Motor Museum, the Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb and last year to the transport day at Hartlebury castle. This year we are combining history and transport with a visit to the Severn Valley Railway. The Severn Valley Railway is a full size standard gauge railway line running regular steam-hauled passenger trains between Kidderminster and Bridgenorth, a distance of 16 miles. The route follows closely the course of the River Severn for most of the way, the highlight being the crossing of the River Severn over the Victoria Bridge. Some of the views en route are only visible from the railway and quaint “olde world” stations punctuate the journey. Return tickets for the full train journey can be purchase with the entry form for £7 per person (half the price of a normal adult fare.) Tickets will only be valid for the day of the Run but they are the Rover tickets, ie. “hop on hop off”. The Run will be approximately 60 miles and the Tulip Rally Instruction will be provided in a special booklet. From start to finish the Run will meander through some of the little known highways and byways of Worcestershire, where there are some magnificent views of the countryside. 4
The Heritage Run is self-financing with all entrants paying a small fee. In the past a small profit has been made enabling the Arden MG Club to make donations to local charities such as the local Alzheimer’s group, Life Jackets for the Centenary Trust, a Special School in the area, Shakespeare Hospice and many other worthwhile causes. This year, it is hoped that a donation can once again be made to County Air Ambulance and other local charities. The cost of entry will be £12 per car, which includes car parking, a Rally Plaque and a Route Book with detailed instructions. Any train tickets ordered with the entry form will be sent out with the Rally Plaques. The Run is open to MG cars only and will be on a first come first served basis. The Land Rover Day on the 14th June is now an annual event. There will be many Land Rovers at stations along the line. A new event for the SVR on the 13th Sept is the Bus Rally. Bewdley Station will host a variety of historic buses.

Zack and Zippy trotting the light fandango at West Midland Safari Park
The Zebra at West Midland Safari Park have always been known for their jaunty exploits and whether it was the move from the winter quarters to their summer residence that caused the horseplay or simply the effects of May Day, one is unsure, but the pair seem to be having enormous fun!
The extrovert duo affectionately named by staff as Zack and Zippy, are notorious for their lively, skittish behaviour and their amusing antics. It is believed that this particular breed of Zebra was the famed “hippotigris” or horse-tiger of the Roman circus, which may explain the extraordinary performance. Despite their tomfoolery Zack and Zippy are in fact very endangered Zebra. They are the Grevy’s Zebra species, which originate in Kenya and Ethiopia, and are being held by West Midland Safari Park on behalf of the European Stud Book. It is hoped that in due course female Grevy’s Zebra will become available to enable the Park to set up a much needed breeding programme to help guarantee the survival of this extra special species.
Zack and Zippy can be seen throughout the May Day holiday, along with a herd of seven Burchell’s Zebra, which although classified as ‘lower risk’ in conservation terms, are equally as striking and sassy. West Midland Safari & Leisure Park is open 7 days until Friday, 6th November 2009. Admission costs £11.50 for adults, £10.50 for children. A new family saver ticket has been introduced for 2009 costing £40.00 admitting two adults and two children. Admission costs also include a free return ticket. Granny Browns Chocolate Box
History lives on in Bewdley thanks to another business with its roots in the heritage of the town. Those of us with a sweet tooth have no doubt paid a visit to Granny Browns Chocolate box in Load street with its wonderful assortment of chocolate and the old-fashioned sweets, the aroma drifting us back to our past. The delicious Carte D’or ice creams for those sunnier days when tongues need cooling and deciding with great anticipation which flavour to order. Why Granny Browns? It’s a familiar question asked to the owner of the shop Davina Woodward by waiting customers - a question only too willing to be answered with great enthusiasm and pride. Granny Brown was Davina’s great-grandmother, a wellknown lady in Bewdley in the 1930’s and 1940’s, who started working as a cook in the George Hotel. Her husband, Dobin, was a taxi driver with a horse and cart who travelled daily to and from the train station transporting the visitors to the town. Their experience of attending to tourists soon inspired them to become landlords of the Horn and Trumpet 8
Public House catering for the tourists and local residents who frequented the establishment. Sadly Dobin passed away and with that came a new venture for Granny Brown by opening a sweet shop in Welch Gate, calling it Granny Browns. Many of the older readers probably remember calling into the shop on the way home from school and seeing the Mynah bird called Jack perched by the entry to the shop. The tradition of the sweet shop lives on with Davina when she opened her own sweet shop, Granny Browns, and now with her husband, Doug, they are opening a new Granny Browns grocery store. On the site of an existing grocery shop where old photographs show the goods and wares on display outside, a slice of history is being re-kindled for the benefit of the local residents of Bewdley and the tourists who visit this historic town. For some it’s a trip down memory lane. Let’s wish Davina and Doug all the best in their new venture and with it keeping the history of Bewdley alive.

Barbecue season to start soon!
OK so everyone knows to cook chicken in the oven first to make sure it is cooked through. As an alternative you could try taking the chicken off the bone laying it on a chopping board, covering it with cling film and bashing it (either with a meat mallet or a rolling pin) until it is about half a cm thick all over. It is important to make it the same thickness all over so it cooks at the same speed throughout. Crush a clove of garlic and mix with a teaspoon of paprika, a teaspoon of whole grain mustard and a teaspoon of honey. Smother this mix over both sides of the chicken - but not so much that it drips - and chuck it straight on the Barbie. With the chicken so thin it will cook quickly and safely. You can make a sauce using the remainder of the paprika/mustard mixture - just heat it gently in a pan with either some plain Greek yoghurt or some double cream. Absolutely lovely and really simple. Steak is one of the best cuts of meat to barbeque. It is difficult to go wrong with steak but a common mistake is to turn it too often. Ideally you should only turn the steak once in my book. I like my steak nice and simple - scored on one side with some ground black pepper and brushed with olive oil to stop it sticking. And that’s it just throw it on and leave it seal both sides, done. Otherwise beef is pretty good for kebabs (if you are using wooden skewers remember to soak them thoroughly in cold water so they don’t catch light). 18
Try this sauce with your chicken or kebabs. Bourbon BBQ Sauce Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • • • •
3 tablespoons butter 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 cup chopped onion 1/2 cup bourbon 3/4 cup ketchup 1/2 cup cider vinegar 1/2 cup orange juice 1/2 cup pure maple syrup 1/4 cup dark molasses, 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon salt
Preparation: In a saucepan, melt the butter with the oil over medium heat. Add the onions and sauté for until golden, about 5 minutes. Add remaining ingredients and stir to combine; reduce heat to low and cook until thickened, about 30 to 45 minutes. Stir often.

Editor’s Letters Your views are welcome in our magazine Dear Editor, I have recently read in two local papers that Bewdley Town Council plans to scrap its funding for Wyre Hill Play area in favour of lighting the Bewdley bridge. I am sure the bridge would look very nice lit up but surely the traders and businesses of Bewdley should pay directly for this rather than deprive children
of a play area. Would the Town Council prefer the children play in the street to the annoyance of pedestrians and drivers?
