Tesco has planning permission to build a supermarket in Stourport-on-Severn The decision was handed down by the Court of Appeal in London today (Thursday 29 July 2010) following a legal challenge by Midcounties Co-operative to Wyre Forest District Council’s planning approval in July 2008. The initial challenge by Midcounties was rejected by the High Court in March 2009. Midcounties then challenged the decision of the High Court and this was considered by the Court of Appeal in April this year. They agreed that there were no grounds to quash the planning permission.

4

The Court order provides that Midcounties must pay the Council’s costs incurred in defending the claim. Councillor Stephen Clee Cabinet Member for Planning & Economic Regeneration from Wyre Forest District Council said, “We welcome the clarification after many months of uncertainty for local residents and businesses. Plans can now go forward and we look forward to working with Tesco to bring new investment to the town.”

Stourbridge Speakers Club Speaking in public is just about having the confidence to stand in front of an audience and utter words. Wrong! Sorry to disappoint you but it takes much more than that to become a good speaker or presenter. Firstly you need to understand the key elements of speech construction, the effective use of gestures, of voice, of vocabulary and word pictures. You need to understand how to use notes well, when to bring in humour and how to develop audience rapport. Perhaps audience rapport is the most important of these skills. Research has shown that the actual words used account for 8-10% only of the impact of the message. With a speech, just as with a joke, success is down to the way you tell it. It is about connecting with the audience. This needs careful preparation. Or as Abraham Lincoln put it, “Extemporaneous speaking should be practised and cultivated.” Even if you are an experienced speaker or presenter, you will benefit from joining a speakers club where your speeches will be evaluated to highlight your strengths and to suggest areas for further improvement. If you have little or no experience, and perhaps are nervous of speaking in front of an audience, you may benefit even more. The opportunity to practise in a friendly and

8

supportive environment will be invaluable to developing your confidence. Either way, I’m sure you’ll have fun. Why not put a note in your diary now to join us at Stourbridge Speakers Club for our first meeting of the 2010-11 season on Monday 6th September? But if you miss that, just come along to any meeting; you will be made very welcome. Find out more about Stourbridge Speakers Club and our meetings from our website: www.StourbridgeSpeakers.org.uk or phone 01527 835161. David Wike, Communications Officer Stourbridge Speakers Club.

Books We Like

Books We Like ‘Winning Is Not Enough’ by Jackie Stewart – If you are

remotely interested in motorsport this is a book well worth reading. Not only does it chronicle Stewart’s racing activities, but also his battle with dyslexia and his considerable achievements as a businessman, from which we can all learn.

‘Simplicity Is The Key’ by Trevor Gay reminds us that we don’t have to make things complicated at work. It is also an object lesson in ‘push the door, it might be open’. Trevor asked his hero, Manchester United’s Sir Alex Ferguson for an endorsement and got one!

“Adolf Hitler, My Part in His Downfall” by Spike Milligan is the first of a six-book series and charts Spike’s experiences as a young solider in the Second World War. Funny, poignant, touching and absurd – this book brings the spirit of a muchloved man alive and must not be missed.

“Fear of Hat Loss in Las Vegas”

by Brendon Burns (new release). In a bid to find their vision of happiness in the Nevada desert, Brendon and 3 friends pack up and head out into the great unknown. What follows is a tale of debauchery, comedy, aliens, co-incidence and, ultimately, friendship. From the winner of the if.comedy award 2007, this true story will have you howling with laughter. 10

Never so much owed by so few… Inspired by Winston Churchill’s speech

The speech is said to have originated after Churchill visited 11 Group’s operations room at RAF Uxbridge on August 16 during a day of battle. Afterwards, Churchill told Major General Hastings Ismay, “Don’t speak to me, I have never been so moved.” After several minutes of silence he said “Never in the field of human conflict has so much been owed by so many to so few.” The sentence would form the basis of Winston Churchill’s speech to the House of Commons on August 20. The speech was given as the United Kingdom prepared for the expected German invasion. In it, Churchill tried to inspire his countrymen by pointing out that although the last several months had been a series of monumental defeats for the Allies, their situation was now much better. Churchill’s argument was in fact correct; shortly thereafter the British won the battle – the first significant defeat for the hitherto unstoppable Nazi war machine. This speech was a great inspiration to the embattled United Kingdom during what was probably the most dangerous phase of the entire war. Together with the three famous speeches that he gave during the period of the Battle of France (the “Blood, toil, tears, and sweat” speech of 13 May, the “We shall fight on the beaches” speech of 4 June, and the “This was their finest hour” speech of 18 June) they form his most stirring rhetoric. Artists like Alex Hamilton, who has given us permission to use one of his paintings, has captured the iconic Spitfire which were successful in stemming the tide of the German Luftwaffe over Britain. The artist has started to seek and accept personal commissions, and has published some limited

18

edition prints. Veteran pilots closely connected with the subject of the print have very kindly signed these. His association with our veterans is something he has wanted to do for some time, for two reasons. Firstly to show an appreciation to the men who flew and fought for what they thought was right, secondly to try and help record their actions as accurately and attractively as he can, for others to maybe understand in time to come. If you would like to see more of Alex’s paintings please go to his web site at www. alexhamilton.net.

Everyone’s going cockadoodl’ally for home produced eggs Nowadays more and more of us are investing in our own slice of the good life - inspired by the likes of Jamie Oliver and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, were growing our own vegetables, planting herb pots, rearing a few pigs or sheep and an ever growing number of us are keeping hens. This is a pastime that everyone can enjoy, not just those in the countryside. From rural orchards to town house gardens, we can all create an environment in which to keep happy hens; it just takes the initial time effort and investment which will all pay off in the long run. Jackie from Equimix Feeds at Stourport has kept chickens for a number of years and has some helpful tips for you. Create the best environment for your birds Be realistic about the space you have available for your hens - If you are keeping hens in your garden, consider a portable hen house and run that you can

easily move when your hens need access to a fresh patch of grass. However if you have the space and the inclination to keep more birds, invest in a bigger hen house or convert and existing out building. Important features of any hen house though are perches for roosting, nest boxes for laying and fox proofing measures - Charlie fox is a ruthless predator and it goes without saying that he is best kept out. Remember the importance of good management It goes without saying that you will reap the benefits of a well managed flock and the following points are really important with your flock’s health and welfare in mind: • Worm regularly and have your hens vaccinated against salmonella. • Clean out nest boxes and your hen house floor regularly - hygiene is very important and I recommend using shavings (available from Equimix, Stourport) over straw if possible and adding disinfectant powder to your shavings after cleaning out the hen house. • Spray your perches and nest boxes for red mite. • If you can, invest in removable perches, nest boxes and dropping boards as it makes cleaning so much easier. • Keep on top of vermin and make sure your hen house is well ventilated. • Make sure your hens have access to clean, fresh water.

Celebrating the Harvest As September approaches, the long bright days of high summer begin to ease into more mellow times and our thoughts turn to the celebration of the harvest. To both the Celts and the later Saxons the importance of reaping the gifts of the earth was marked by important festival and was known as ‘Lughnasadh’ and ‘Hlaefmass’ respectively, which became ‘Lammas’ in the early Christian calendar, although this soon disappeared and was not marked by the church again until 1843. In the early 1840’s the harvests had been so poor in the Cornish parish of Morwenstowe that had it not been for the kindness of their vicar, the Reverend Robert Stephen Hawker, many

parishioners would have starved. In 1842 however, the harvest was good and the local authorities ordered that special prayers of thanksgiving should be recited in church. Thinking this was an idea worth pursuing, the Reverend Hawker continued the tradition the following year and within twenty years the festival had become established in most churches across the land. Carole Carlton is a lecturer, writer and author on ancient spirituality and complementary therapies. Her first book, ‘Mrs Darley’s Pagan Whispers’, outlines the eight major Pagan festivals as they fall chronologically throughout the year and introduces the reader to the delightful and yet rather eccentric Mrs Darley whom the author met whilst living in the wilds of Bodmin Moor in Cornwall. Other books in the Mrs Darley series are also available entitled: ‘Mrs Darley’s Moon Mysteries’ and Mrs Darley’s Pagan Elements’. After a £5m rebuild Spring Grove House is now open again and means business Spring Grove House the sumptuous banqueting suite set in the grounds of West Midland Safari Park has reopened after a £5m rebuild following a major fire on Christmas Eve 2006. It took up to 50 firefighters to bring the blaze under control, with water being drawn from the Hippo Lake when the engines ran dry. Despite the outstanding effort by services, the fire ripped through Spring Grove House to leave just four walls standing. Whilst it was not possible to save any of the House interiors, the kitchen and more recently added ‘south wing’ was less affected. Spring Grove House was also Head Office of West Midland Safari Park and

24

years of history and archive material was also lost during the fire, leaving staff and management the arduous task of recreating offices and records for years to come. Now that the rebuild is complete, whilst the building is now brand new, rebuilt as the eighteenth century Georgian Manor House that it originally was, gone has any hint of ‘Victoriana’ as in the early days and in its place has come colonial elegance. The ‘new’ Spring Grove House, which resembles a luxurious African residence transported from the great plains of Africa, creates a completely unique and unusual destination for any event that demands exclusivity. It seems fitting that the first major series of events planned at Spring Grove House will be to celebrate

the festive season with a lavish programme of parties, put together by Banqueting Management and Executive Chefs. This is all the more poignant as in the early days following the fire, so badly was the building damaged that it was uncertain whether the building could be saved at all. Staff have worked painstakingly with English Heritage, the Wyre Forest Conservation Team, architects and interior designers and employed as many local craftsmen as possible throughout the rebuild. So exacting was the criteria that was set, the build has taken two years longer to complete than anticipated. The finished result has been achieved through hard

work, dedication and passion and it is now undoubtedly one of the most unusual and prestigious business and corporate hospitality destinations in the Heart of England. For more information view: www.springgrovehouse.co.uk Telephone: 01299 406460 or Email: enquiries@springgrovehouse.co.uk

I have joined gyms in the past but have become increasingly bored with the same old workout – bike, rowing machine and onto the treadmill 3 times a week is hardly inspiring. What if you had someone who could guide you through the process who looks great – a role model who motivates you to keep going and who advises you on how to stay healthy without dieing – meet Nicky Bethell. Nicky is a personal trainer who offers home visits, she is based in Kidderminster and has clients all over Worcestershire. I found Nicky on the internet and invited her to my home for a consultation. Nicky has been training since she was 19 and has been a full-time personal trainer for 7 years. She is passionate about the benefits of exercise and eating nutritionallypacked foods. Nicky’s favourite word is MINDSET, she explained that you must be of the right mindset in order to fully maximise the benefits of her bespoke service. The harder you focus (wedding anniversary, school reunion, Christmas party) the better the end result. Nicky’s boot was crammed full with her mobile gym equipment – we swung kettle bells between our legs to strengthen our core muscles, we used the same kettle bell above our heads to concentrate on the

28

Nicky Bethell “bingo wings”, we stepped up and down on the stepper in my garden to tone our thigh and bum muscles. All this was done with Nicky’s constant encouragement and great sense of humour. I thoroughly recommend Nicky to anyone who wants to look and feel healthy – the hour long session flew by. We ended the session with a Swedish body massage to help with any stiffness or soreness I might encounter the following day. Nicky qualified in both Swedish body massage (relaxing) or sports massage (a deeper massage that can help with the recovery of soft tissue injuries). For further information or to book a free home consultation with Nicky call 07976 590446 or visit her website www.fitnicpersonaltraining.co.uk. Nicky is offering a special offer to all YLT readers – book 4 training sessions and you will receive a complimentary massage of your choice.

Lasers for all

Normally the domain of all things futuristic and sci-fi, I suppose lasers have historically been seen as a potential force of death and destruction, how would Captain Kirk and Mr Spock ever have a chance of warding off the Klingons without a trusty laser pistol, indeed.... As far back as 1983, even Ronald Reagan got smitten with laser lust by announcing their “Strategic Defence Initiative (SDI )” which involved high power lasers as part of a defence shield to protect America from incoming intercontinental ballistic nuclear missiles, quickly daubed the “Star Wars” project it soon became old news after many millions of US taxpayers money had been wasted. Now, before you hunt around for your home-made light sabre made from old toilet rolls and a light bulb, you need look no further than your living room to find the humble laser.... If you have a CD or DVD player, without a laser they would cease to function, but who developed it, how long has it been around and does it have a future ?? Over the next few paragraphs, I hope to enlighten and educate you on the origins of this wonder of modern science; Laser ( or Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation - if you want to call it by its true acronym ) has its origins as far back as 1917, when Albert Einstein ( who else !! ) published a scientific paper on the principles, but it wasn’t until 1960 that the first functional laser was demonstrated. The first use of lasers in the daily lives of the general population was the supermarket barcode scanner, introduced in 1974. The laserdisc player, introduced in 1978, was the first successful consumer product to include a laser but the compact disc player was the first laserequipped device to become common, beginning in 1982 followed shortly by laser printers. Using a low power semiconductor laser, one of many forms of laser, I think it’s quite safe to say that we needn’t worry about a terrorist trying to take over the World by turning the laser from his XBOX dvd player on us, but using high power lasers, it is possible to weld and cut metal using the principle, scary... On the computer front, thank God for lasers for without them, we would have no CD, DVD or Blu-Ray discs. CD technology was developed by both Sony and Philips in the late 1970s, primarily as an audio format. In 1985, the two companies set forth standards for CD-ROM technology and soon after CD-ROM drives for computers were available to the general public. By the early 1990s, most computers sold included CD-ROM drives... Initially, it was not possible to save data to a cd, but then along came cd writers, giving computer users everywhere the ability to save the equivalent of approximately 500

30

your

Local Times floppy discs on one cd. Of course, the format has been succeeded by DVD ( Digital Versatile Disc ) which hold the equivalent of 6 compact discs and recently Blu-Ray which have the potential to store the same amount of data as 10 DVD discs or 60 CD-ROMS !! So how does it work ??? When data is read from a CD, a laser directs an extremely fine stream of light onto the surface of the disc. The laser follows the data stream of bumps and lands from the inside centre of the disc outward in a spiral direction, allowing the size and even the shape of a data CD to vary if needed. As the one millionth of a millimetre (one micron) wide laser light shines on the CD’s data track, it reflects one pattern of light off of a bump and a different pattern off of a land area. The resulting reflections equate to a series of ones and zeros, or the binary language of computers. A special tracking system in the CD-ROM drive constantly monitors the laser and adjusts its path to ensure it follows the correct data path on the CD, clever stuff eh ?? In conclusion, I think its safe to say that lasers are here to stay and like so many things in our comfortable, pampered lives, we really can’t do without them. What would you store your digital pictures on, play your music from or watch your movies off ?? Tape is DEAD, long live the digital age, embrace it. Steve Gould

Local Sports

The Harriers The start to this brand new season over at the Harriers has proved, if ever proof was needed, that the 2010/11 term will be an exciting one! In true underdog style, the men from Aggborough caused major waves on the opening day of the season when they went up to York City and picked up a win against one of the most highly-fancied sides in the division. With the whole place buzzing about just how well City were going to do, Harriers well and truly pooped the party as a late goal saw them go away with what some considered a shock win. There was no shock in the Kidderminster changing room – player Dave Hankin saying afterwards: “Everyone had York as the strong favourites to win but, quietly, we knew deep down that we could come into the game and win it and we have shown our supporters what we can do.”

Days later, Harriers tasted defeat for the first time in the season but they did so with heads held high; a massively entertaining and at times frantic match with Southport finishing 4-3 to the visitors at Aggborough. ‘Kiddy’ may have missed out but their attacking football was a treat for the home fans, which surely will enjoy what the remainder of 2010/11 has to offer. In September, you can catch Harriers at their home ground on the following dates: SAT 11 v HAYES & YEADING SAT 18 v CAMBRIDGE UNITED SAT 25 v AFC WIMBLEDON

COMPETITION WINNER

Last month, Your Local Times ran a competition to give away a pair of terrace tickets. All you had to do was correctly answer the following question: Which goalkeeper made his return to Harriers this summer? The answer was: A: Daniel Lewis Congratulations to our winner, Jayne Paget of Bewdley, and the tickets are on their way to you !! 32

Fred’s shed

Advice from the allotment

A yearly stroll through the season on Fred’s allotment September is the end of summer although we’re often lucky to have an Indian summer with blue skies and sunshine, nothing is certain with the weather. The bulk of the harvest comes home now and as crops come out the plot begins to empty. Harvest You may well have reasonably sized parsnips now but they will stay perfectly happy in the ground and do taste better after they have had a frost on them. The runner beans and French beans will be continuing to produce and the last of the peas should be coming in. Compost the foliage of the peas but leave the roots in the ground as the nodules on them contain nitrogen. The harvest will be in full swing and in addition to the above you should have: Beetroot, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflowers, Courgettes, Cucumbers, Globe Artichokes, Kale Kohlrabi, Lettuce, Leeks, Marrows, Onions, Pumpkins, Radishes, Spring Onions, Spinach, Sweetcorn, Tomatoes and Turnips From the greenhouse you should be picking aubergines, chilli and sweet peppers as well as cucumbers and tomatoes. If you grow fruit then the picking should be in full swing there as well: Apples, pears, plums, peaches from the trees, blackberries and raspberries from the canes and strawberries from the bed. Sowing There’s not a great deal to sow now but surprisingly it’s the right time to sow winter lettuces such as Arctic King for spring harvests. The other salad crop is the winter hardy spring onion. I’d suggest White Lisbon but ensure it is 34

the winter hardy version. Early September is the time to sow green manures. If you do not need to dig over your plot as you do with heavy soils or intend to spread manure on a patch then following on the last of a crop with a green manure is a great idea. The first benefit is that the green manure will hold onto soil fertility that would otherwise be washed out by the winter rains. In fact, sowing a legume such as Winter Tares will fix nitrogen from the air. Secondly, they will prevent weed growth so you will have less work to do. Finally they help improve the soil structure. In the spring you just need to dig over and allow them to rot down for a few weeks. One of the best green manures for winter growth is Hungarian grazing rye. It continues to grow, albeit slowly, in cold weather and should be around 15” tall come the spring from an early September sowing. Not only will you have a lush mass of foliage but it also produces a mass of roots that will provide humus for bacterial breakdown.

Whitlenge diary September September the 21st is the Autumn equinox, the time of equal day and equal night, it’s almost as if time holds its breath before letting it out into the coming depths of the year. A time of harvest and traditionally much work, storing apples in darkened rooms, making jams and jellies, freezing the bean glut and the last ditch attempt of green tomato chutney. Prepare for winter colds by making elderberry and blackberry cordials and syrups. An easy pudding is to stew elderberries and blackberries with water and sugar to taste, pass through a sieve, and add to double cream, wiz in a blender and serve - goodness in a bowl. The garden always looks like it needs a haircut at this time of year, a bit wild and woolly! Cut back all the spent herbaceous and herbs. Cut roses back hard and you may get another winter flowering. Stand back and cast a critical eye, autumn is the perfect planting time as the weather is still warm enough for shrubs and trees to get safely settled in before winter. Where do you need structure? Where do you need

evergreens amongst the deciduous shrubs for winter colour? What about scent and winter flowers? There are many choices to be made to enhance the garden and make it just as interesting through the winter as in any other season. Planting bulbs now is something you will be so glad you did when they peep through the snow or show their flowers on dark winter days. Plant as many as you can. It might be a good idea to put a net over ponds now, if they are not too big, this just makes life that bit easier as the leaves begin to fall. We look forward to a warm and colourful autumn but take a breath while time stands still at the equinox, to give thanks for the harvest and enjoy the fruits of you and yours.

Even in Shakespeare’s time English summers were tricky “Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summers lease hath all too short a date” so lets be ready when and if it arrives to enjoy every minute. 36

Sky bound staff practice their moves for Acorns charity Staff at Midlands based Oakland International are making ready for next month’s sponsored sky dive in aid of children’s charity Acorns Children’s Hospice, already raising an amazing £1,435 of their £10,000 target. Team Oakland has been busy raising personal and team sponsorship and gearing up for their ‘jump of a lifetime’. Speaking on behalf of the team, Lisa Lloyd-Smith said: “We all

still can’t believe we actually agreed to jump out of a plane, but then again it’s for a great cause and it will certainly give us something to talk about for years to come.”

It costs £4,500 per day to run each of our hospices and there is no charge to families. We rely on fundraising for over 70% of our income so commitment such as this is invaluable.”

Lucy Shepherd, Acorns Treks and Challenges officer, commented: “The support of organisations such as Oakland International is crucial in helping us raise the vital funds needed to provide the care and support for local life limited children and their families.

Please help and make a donation today. Donations can be made by logging on to Oakland’s JustGiving web page at www.justgiving.com/oaklandinternational or by contacting the Company direct.

Annie Austin in Kenya I have recently returned from my second visit to Kosele in Kenya where I stayed in the Hope and kindness orphanage. I have been helping the people of Kosele with projects so they can become self-sufficient, growing their own food, but this requires education as well as harvesting water. During my visit, I was able to install the first of 30 roofharvesting systems to help families in the community. My friends Val and Liz raised the money needed from their friends in the Riverside Church in Bewdley and from street collections, (in all weathers!). Our thanks to them for such a welcome result! The Bewdly Riverside Church congregation has raised enough money so far to purchase and install thirty water butts so as the rain can be harvested and used to irrigate the small-cultivated plots and for drinking water. Hand tools were also provided and enough seeds to grow the first crops. The logistics of such an undertaking were immense as bureaucracy and the roads to the villages were virtually inpassable to the transport, which was required to move the goods.

Another successful installation - Annie’s ‘roof harvesting’ system In our struggle to secure our own water supply, it has become increasingly clear to us that clean water really does bring life, hope and optimism for the future.

There are about five thousand people in the village, which has little resources and barely enough food or water to survive, but I feel passionate enough to help them. It is only when you see at first hand that you appreciate what we have in this country, especially water and food.

A simple “roof harvesting” system, like the one in the picture below will help to provide clean water for drinking during the rainy season and conserve this precious resource.

The people of Kosele deserve to be given a chance to help themselves but it starts with raising money. We are organising an auction at the church on November the 20th and would welcome any new or nearly new items that are suitable for people to bid on. Go to the web site at www. hopeandkindness.org and have a look at our project, from the butts that have been distributed to the Orphanage, which has been built, all from donations raised through the church.

It costs approximately £55, ($80), to install a roof harvesting system consisting of guttering to catch the water, down pipe, 500-litre water tank, and seeds and farming tools. We hope to install many more of these vital systems in 2011.

Our aim is to purchase more tools and flexible water containers so they can be transported more easily thus saving transport costs but we need your help and money. A few pounds would by a family the tools, seed and the water container to make them self sufficient.

If you would like to help Please send donations to: Hope and Kindness, 54 Church road, Astwood Bank, Redditch B96 6DD. Please make cheques payable to Hope and Kindness. We can increase your donation by claiming gift aid. If you include your name and address with your donation we can send you a gift aid form. Alternatively, you can download a gift aid form from the web site www.hopeandkindness.org

Are You Packed to The Rafters? Feeling fed up with the clutter and lack of space in your home? You are not alone. With a recent survey carried out by the British Institute showed that 88% of British homes have at least one cluttered room and the average home has three or more cluttered rooms, it is clear that an organised home is a challenge for many British families. A cluttered home can leave people feeling “boxed in” and even embarrassed by the clutter. 42% of the survey respondents said they felt anxious or depressed about the amount of clutter in their home, whilst 29% said that clutter stops them enjoying their time at home. So what are the options? Looking for a larger home is a popular but often costly and time-consuming option. De-cluttering can be the answer but many people have a sentimental attachment to items, or the “clutter” itself is valuable; though only used

42

seasonally or occasionally like heaters and fans, suitcases, Christmas decorations and out-of-season clothes. Attic Access has been helping families de-clutter their living spaces for over 25 years. They have installed hundreds of loft ladders that have allowed families to unlock their roof space. Owner, Jon Dunlop says, “Most people are surprised when I tell them that up to 30% of the space in their home can be in the attic. Depending on the type of house, size of attic and budget, we can create a fantastic bespoke storage solution for you. With an Attic Access loft ladder you can put your items out of the way, but still access them quickly, easily and safely whenever you need to.” To find out more or to book an obligation-free survey call 01299 823902 or visit www.accessyourattic.co.uk
