Welcome‌

A new year and having settled into my job as editor I am looking at introducing more features of all your favourite subjects. The New Year, ushers in a New look. See what our advertisers have to offer over the coming months. With the wedding season approaching we all need to look our best for the big occasion, especially the bride, and with so many beauty and hair salons to choose from around our region we need to select the best, so our features may help you to decide. This month we have introduced another regional magazine to the Bromsgrove and surrounding area which complements the Wyre Forest issues, which have proved to be a great success for our advertisers. I hope you will continue to enjoy reading the magazine and I always look forward to your comments and letters. Have a prosperous new year.

Derek Norval - Curative Hypnotherapist & NLP Practitioner NEW YEAR – NEW YOU ! Be who you really want to be in 2011 ! Derek Norval is an experienced Hypnotherapist – he helped me quit smoking and lose weight! “This is my story. I used to be a heavy smoker, scared to give up for fear of piling on the pounds. I used to think smoking stopped me getting fat! I thought I could gradually wean myself off the ciggies. But I used the ‘putting on weight’ thing as an excuse. Then I met Derek and I realised that I could give up smoking without getting fat (which is what I feared most).

What I really liked about Derek is that he didn’t judge me. I think he really understands the ‘smokers mentality’. Maybe that’s because he trained as a Hypnotherapist after it helped him to stop smoking! “Well all I can say is give Derek a go, don’t try and go it alone. We all need that extra bit of help. I haven’t even fancied a cigarette in over a year now and, the most amazing thing is, I haven’t put on weight! Thanks Derek!” Debbie, Bromsgrove.

A January Wassail Before the introduction of the Gregorian calendar to Britain in 1752, Christmas day was celebrated on the 6 January, thereby making 17 January, ‘Old Twelfth Night’, or ‘Wassail Night’. The word ‘Wassail’ derives from the Norse, ‘Wes Hail’ or the Saxon, ‘Waes Hael’ meaning ‘good health’, or ‘be whole’ and was used as a toast, when taking a wassail drink known as ‘lambswool’, which consisted of mulled ale, herbs and honey. In the Middle Ages, wassailing became very popular, with songs being especially composed for the occasion. ‘Wassail, wassail all over the town, Our toast it is white and our ale it is brown.’ As time progressed, farmers in the apple growing regions of England would (and in some instances, still do) ‘Wassail’ around their orchards, blowing horns, tapping the trees with sticks and pouring cider on the roots, to ensure a plentiful crop in the year to come.

My Relaxing Jewellery Party with Michelle of Cherish by Sue MacLusky

Michelle Mills-Porter runs a jewellery business called Cherish. Just before Christmas I booked Michelle to do a Jewellery party. It was AMAZING.

Despite the heavy snow, Michelle turned up all fresh and sparkly with an incredible range of beads and gems. Once she’d laid them all out to tantalize us, we then got to play with them! It was like Mother Christmas had arrived! I told Michelle I’d been stressing about how my 9-year-old son (he’s a real boy who claims to ‘hate girls’) was going to cope with a house full of women all making necklaces! I needn’t have worried. Michelle went out of her way to involve him. In fact, he loved it so much he made two necklaces! (*I’ve never seen him concentrate so hard! *) They were of course special ‘Surfer dude’ boy necklaces made from ‘cool’ black lava beads, hematite and spacers in “gun metal” silver as well as beautiful gems! He now wants to be a ‘Jeweller’ when he grows up, as well as a ‘Surf Dude’ of course! As for me, I was able to make myself THE MOST INCREDIBLE piece of jewellery at a fraction of what it would have cost me in the shops. But the truth is, I would never have found it because by choosing my own beads from a phenomenal range of gems I was able to make a stunning designer item! People keep asking me where I bought it! I have to admit - I really do love the look on their faces when I tell them I made it myself! Thank you so much Michelle!

Property values

turned on their head With the economic downturn affecting the property market,

is it a good time to sell?

Life goes on and over the past few years the property market has seen exceptional growth. Lets not forget the reasons why we buy a property. We need somewhere to live and whether we buy or rent there is no getting away from this reason. We like growth in property values because whatever we paid for our home in the past we have been able to borrow against its equity and banks have certainly not stopped us from doing this. Perhaps in retrospect we should have curbed our borrowing but banks certainly made it very easy to procure loans and overdrafts. In the past, it was accepted that a large mortgage attracted, what was the called, mortgage relief, but those were in the past and the only winners now are the banks, which charge inflated interest Those who have to sell, for what ever reasons, moving to new areas, family reasons, repayment of debt, down sizing to a smaller property, will find a limited numbers of buyers who are in a position to purchase. Firstly, they probably have to sell their property, and secondly they may have to find a mortgage, which can prove to be a problem. The criteria for obtaining a mortgage have certainly been tightened up, in my opinion too much, but I am no expert. They can certainly find Which way now, David? the money to 16

pay bankers bonuses this year again so there may be other reasons. It would be interesting to hear from a banker who may shed some light on this. Clearly while the interest rate is so low they wouldn’t make so much money by lending to the mortgage industry. They certainly have had their fingers burnt creating the toxic debt but should the genuine homeowner be penalised over their miss management. As tax payers, we all own a piece of the banks which the government bailed out in the crisis and I feel the government has a duty to resolve the mortgage crisis and introduce a new government backed mortgage scheme where genuine home owners, whether they be first time buyers or pensioners who need to down size, can borrow safely, cheaply and quickly. I distinguish between the genuine home owner and the speculative property developer, which many home owners have become, after many television programmes show us how to buy, renovate and sell, with little or no experience of building, decorating, the legal requirements and by using the aptly named “leverage” to acquire the money by re-mortgaging their main residence. So we have come full circle where many speculators have thrown in the keys, causing toxic debt, a record number of empty property ‘s, when there is an increase in the homeless, fewer property’s being bought and sold, banks reluctant to lend mortgages and a housing market in limbo. So do we have an answer and have we learnt any thing from this crisis? I doubt it because in another ten to fifteen years’ property will have risen in value and this crisis will be consigned to history.

Every month we will feature a property, which is for sale and building, and do-it-yourself tips from some of our contributors. Is your property for sale? Had any viewings yet?

Local Times

A great time to start a business… In a recession Since leaving my job in the print industry and starting this magazine I’ve been fortunate to meet business people who are passionate about their products and services. Many of them, like me, started with an idea, and then expanded it into a successful venture. We all have one thing in common; we need to promote our business. No matter how good we are, we need to be visible and credible.

Sales earn money

Finding new customers is paramount in this consumer-led society. Reputation and longevity does not guarantee success. Some people employ sales staff that visit customers whilst others rely on the customer coming to visit us. Whichever route we employ we still have to promote our business.

The Internet

Even if you have a web site, unless you have a well-known domain, searching for your product or company can be time consuming. Plus, you are competing against a lot of similar businesses so unless your product is unique it may never be found. I ask myself why ‘Go Compare’ and similar web sites spend millions of pounds promoting themselves on television when they have a very successful presence on the Internet and can easily be found. The same can be said for Tesco’s, Asda and Morrison’s, which have all become

18

household names. They realize that without promoting their products with tempting offers, we would visit their competition and their sales revenue would fall. So why was “Your Local Times” magazine started when the market is already pretty full of similar publications? The answer is simple. There was a gap in the market for a local publication, which targeted the consumer where businesses could promote their products and services at a competitive rate. Show me a publication which covers such a large area, delivers to most households in it’s own town, offers to promote businesses with features and editorials free of any cost, when they advertise with us, and in a publication which is four colour. …continued on page 20…

“Your Local Publisher Ltd”, who owns a number of magazine titles, has a number of creative projects, which we are introducing. For example; we plan to add presenters to your advertisements which will appear in the digital magazine on our website. Video creation of your products and businesses, which you can use to upload on to social networking sites and You Tube as well as our printing facility. It is also able to offer competitive quotes for any printing you may require and has a creative design studio team able to put your ideas into print and on the Internet. Small towns need the High Street, and without its shops (which make up the diversity of a town) the high street wouldn’t exist. It would become a centre for curry houses and charity shops! Yes we do need our curries and charity shops but a town needs to keep its identity by having a good mix of businesses! Therefore, what does your town have to offer over other locations and how do we get the visitor to keep coming back? Bewdley and similar towns are lucky to have holiday parks, a museum, restaurants, pubs and guesthouses where visitors can stay and spend their money in the town. By expanding “Your Local Times” to cover other regions, businesses that advertise benefit from the exposure, increasing trade and revenue. We encourage many of our advertisers to supply us with Features, Editorials and competitions. (For example Ray’s Farm, The Kidderminster Harriers and many local award-winning Chefs). Readers like it and the advertiser benefits from it as it is, after all, for the local community. 20

The Harriers

It’s socially responsible, employing local people from each magazine region ensuring local news; those who have the desire to keep it Local cover advertising and events. So why the title Your Local I wanted a magazine that the local residents and businesses can use to promote their town. It’s Your magazine. Use it before it ends up like the diminishing High Street, consigned to history.

Notions “Well – I didn’t know this was here.” “Are you new?” “I didn’t know you sold all this”… all exclamations often heard- so let us tell you more. ‘Notions’ have been there behind the Church for over 14 years (previously in Welch Gate) selling everything for needle crafters from pins through to curtain fabrics, feathers, fancy goods and frippery – and claim that if they don’t stock it they can usually get it for you.

There is always a good selection of leading brands of ribbons, buttons and haberdashery, cross-stitch, tapestry, embroidery, quilting and knitting accessories – but for those who don’t sew for themselves ‘Notions’ can do it for you with their in-house alterations and curtain making services. They have a good array of samples but will also make up your own fabrics. They can even supply tracks & poles at prices often cheaper than D.I.Y. stores. If you need seats or chairs re-filling they can either accommodate you from in-house supplies or send your covers away for re-filling. In the current economic climate it is a good idea to make-do-and-mend and Notions often have very useful suggestions for ways of doing just that; it could be as simple as re-dying a favourite item using one of their full range of ‘Dylon dyes’. It is well worth taking the time to visit and browse so that you know where to go in future for those small items you thought you could no longer buy but have ‘been on your doorstep’ all this time. If all that isn’t enough they are agents for a specialist Dry Cleaners and expert shoe repairers – it really is a one-stop shop. Well I never…

The Harriers The cold snap surrounding and including Christmas took its toll on everyone – not least the folks over at the Harriers!

The snow and ice has seen many of us struggle to find a way into work thanks to all the traffic chaos – you can sympathise, then, for those that are without their place of work because of the conditions, including the footballers. The Harriers players and their fans were without football for almost the whole of December, as some four matches were called off, along with countless days’ worth of training sessions. With Christmas also one of the most popular times of year for watching the game, too, it hasn’t been great! Matt Wall, the club’s Press Officer, chatted to Your Local Times, and commented: “What a nasty period we’ve been going through, we’ve not been able to get anything done! “The one saving grace, if you can call it that, is that in the build up to Christmas we only lost one home fixture; the rest of our postponements coming at away matches.” The Harriers, then, will have to rack up the miles in 2011 to make up for lost time. Trips to Barrow, Darlington, Gateshead, Eastbourne and plenty more all await before the season finishes. Thankfully, you don’t have to

26

travel anywhere near that far to see some of the football. Over at Aggborough this month, Harriers will be taking on Kettering Town on Tuesday, 11 January 2011 at 7:45pm should you fancy popping along and seeing how the boys are doing. If you prefer your football on a Saturday, then go to Aggborough on Saturday, 22 January 2011 at 3:00pm for the visit of Barrow, as the team look to continue their push for promotion.

FREE MATCH VOUCHERS We have a pair of match vouchers (which you can exchange for tickets for free) to give away to anyone who can answer the following question: Q: How many home games did Harriers lose to the weather in the build up to Christmas? A: One B: Two C: Three *Full terms and conditions available at the rear of your issue. Good Luck, and come on you reds!

The Big Fish Angler Extraordinaire

At this time of year the big edge to catching fish is to use feed stimulates but give the fish very little feed for in these wintry conditions a fish will open its mouth very little to feed. If you use a good feed stimulate you can get the same effect as the fried onions syndrome in the pub! By that I mean how often have you been drinking in your local and not thinking of food when suddenly a whiff of steak & onions or beef burger & onions comes across you nose and straight away you think “Cor I could just eat one myself,” and you do. So with this in mind this month I am going to tell you of my top three feed stimulates to put in the swim to get those winter fish to open their mouths. For me the number one and has been for nigh-on 7 years now an SBS Product called “The Edge.” I was introduced to this spray dried corn powder by an Essex angler and straight from the start when I started using the stuff it caught me extra fish. At first I added the powder to my groundbait for roach with devastating effect as it was for bream. Martin Bowler made a liquid with the stuff by simply adding river water and used it to great effect in one of his films for TV to catch monster barbel and in later years the SBS Match Team have used it to catch many 100lb plus bags and both Steve Harris and Dean Sheldon of the team have taken 300lb+ bags in matches - now that’s

In conditions like this you need help to catch fish. This is Stourport with the river frozen from bank to bank Dec 2010

a lot of fish and they both will tell you these catches were possible because they made The Edge powder into a liquid by adding the juice from a tin of sweetcorn or just good old lake water and by using their pole pots “potted” the juice into the water making a yellow cloud and fishing a piece of corn or a carp pellet in the cloud and caught one a chuck for five hours. And seven years on The Edge is still as effective as ever especially on waters that it has never been used before it really is the best feed stimulate my friends and myself have ever used! My second favourite feed stimulant is Corn Steep Liquor which again is a corn based product and when introduced into the swim can drive fish crazy even in the depths of winter. The “malty” flavour of this liquid carp love and the SBS version is PVA bag friendly which means you can fish the PVA bag and cast it out without melting the material once in the water the bag melts and releases the liquor out into the swim. The fish then are stimulated to look for food and with a little luck your hook-bait is the only one there so guaranteeing you a take, it doesn’t get any better than that! I soak my corn, luncheon meat and even pump expander pellets with this magic liquid it’s been out for years but still no other liquid comes near to its success of stimulating fish to feed especially at this time of year. Last but not least of my feed stimulates is Hemp Protein Powder which if you are after roach on a canal or pool has no equal. This fine powder can be made into a “sloppy” cloud which again can be “potted” in and I like to add it to a fine groundbait with very little water added so it only just about holds together when you throw it in. It will if mixed correctly lie on the surface for a second and then “explode” as it takes on water making a cloud that fish find irresistible. Use a small piece of Hemp Paste made from the Hemp Powder by using a raw egg as the binder, a small piece of punched bread or a caster in amongst the cloud and get ready for the float to shoot under. There you have it my top three feed stimulates for this time of year. All are available from the SBS Baits shop in Kidderminster where either Andy, Paul or myself will be only too willing to give you further advice to getting a bite or two through this difficult winter period.

Whitlenge diary January www.whit-lenge.co.uk

I do a lot of looking out of the window in January and not so much venturing out. So what is there to see? Pines look magnificent at this time of year their needle clad stems all covered in frost. They vary in appearance from bristly little bottle brushes to huge shaggy chimney sized brushes. Choose between dwarf, bonsai like trees such as Pinus mugo or stately Pinus wallchiana. Take care of them if it snows though as the weight can bend and break the branches. Rush out and shake the branches to remove the snow. More bees are now being seen in winter foregoing hibernation in favour of foraging on winter flowering garden shrubs such as Mahonia, shrubby honeysuckles, clematis cirrhosa and early flowering spring bulbs. Research is being undertaken to observe this phenomenon. Plant Liatris spicata bulbs now. The purplish blue spikes prove irresistible to bees during the summer.

Rather than plant outside, plant in pots to fill in gaps in borders in late spring. We luckily did not get to complete all our deadheading at Whitlenge, so now I look out of my kitchen window to see flocks of red capped Gold finches feeding on lemon balm and

Buddleia seeds. They are a joy to watch darting from stem to stem; we will definitely leave these unpruned for them next year. To get a bit of exercise and fresh air spread compost, farmyard manure or bulky organic material on vegetable patches, shrub borders and hedges. Just spread over the surface and let the worms do the rest by taking down into the soil. This will pay dividends in the year to come, feeding the soil and therefore improving the health of shrubs and plants as they have their winter sleep. January can be a hard month so rest and recuperate ready for the year to come. Throw another log on the fire and enjoy the slower pace.

Even in Shakespeare’s time English summers were tricky “Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summers lease hath all too short a date” so lets be ready when and if it arrives to enjoy every minute. 30

The Evolution of Music - Part 1 As I write this, the ground is covered in snow and ice and Christmas Day is less than a week away and all we have channelled down our lugholes from the radio is the usual Christmas fare – Slade, Roy Wood, Band Aid and Aled Jones !!!! Yes folks, it’s the time when all the record companies jump on the band-wagon to release compilations and greatest hits packages from bands and artists who could quite easily retire on the royalties they get from their one and only Christmas hit while the rest of us plebs keep slogging away in our jobs and businesses to earn a crust or two – I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday, indeed.... Anyway, gripe aside, having examined the development of home movies in the last three issues, I thought we’d now take a look at how music made the jump to digital, so come with me as we travel back to the dawn of recorded music and Thomas Edison, one of the greatest inventors in history and one of my all time heroes. The earliest form of sound reproducing equipment used cylinders wrapped in tin foil and were conceived between May and July 1877 by Edison, but these were superseded by cardboard cylinders wrapped in wax, as developed by Chichester Bell and Charles Sumner Taintner due to the fact that the tin foil ripped after a few playings. It was called a phonograph and was announced to the World on November 21st 1877, but the early versions were only seen as a way of recording the spoken word, never music. In fact, the oldest known cylinder recording still in existence is thought to be Frank Lambert’s 1878 lead cylinder recording for an experimental speaking clock !! It wasn’t long before the commercial benefits of this new scientific wonder were realised and thus May 1889 saw the birth of the “phonograph parlour” where, for a small fee, one could record their voice for posterity, but you still needed a device to play it back on !!! By 1890, record manufacturers had begun using a rudimentary

32

duplication process to mass-produce their product. While the live performers recorded the master phonograph, up to ten tubes led to blank cylinders in other phonographs. Until this development, each record had to be custom-made. It was to be another 2 years before Emile Berliner took Edison’s principle and created the first disc based recording technique. The first discs were 5” and could only be recorded on one side, audio quality was poor and certainly didn’t offer any improvement over the superior quality offered by cylinder recordings. Though Edison’s recording technology was better than Berliner’s, there were commercial advantages to a disc system since the disc could be easily mass produced by moulding and stamping and it required less storage space for a collection of recordings, the future of cylinders was dubious. In 1895, discs went to 7” and audio quality was improved to that of the cylinder after involvement by Eldridge R. Johnson. By 1901, the 10” disc became the medium of choice and with consumers clamouring for double sided recordings, it soon became obvious that the cylinder was becoming somewhat passé, even Edison could see where the future was going and in 1912, released the Edison Disc Record. At this point, both cylinder and disc medium and players existed simultaneously ( a bit like the VHS / Betamax wars I suppose ) but advancements in mass production and fierce marketing by disc player manufacturers forged the future of home entertainment. Production of cylinder players ceased in 1929 and for the next several decades at least, the long playing record ( LP ) established itself in homes across the World as the medium of choice to store and play our favourite music and vocal recordings. Of course, the early discs were not the cuddly, flexible and durable vinyl most of us know and love, I dare say there are a number of readers of a certain age, will remember with fondness the Bakelite Behemoths of yesteryear, but that’s another story.... Steve Gould

Winter Car Care Tips from the UK’s Most Loved Valeter 2010 Being slightly obsessive is one of the reasons that Stuart Porter does what he does. He can see the swirl marks in the paintwork from a mile off and knows exactly how he would put it right, which is what has won him the reputation that he gained in the industry so far.

results, it’s not just a quick buck for me.” So whether to keep the value of the vehicle or to prepare your car for sale, it’s worth getting a professional once over.

Leaving his role as FD in a marketing company, The Clean Car Company became the lifestyle career that some people dream of and others fear. So there’s no monthly salary guaranteed and the weather can determine his workload, but doing something he loves has its rewards. Voted as the UK’s Most Loved Valeter in the UK via “Best of”, Stuart’s reputation is also supported by becoming a DODO Juice Authorised detailer and an Autosmart certified Valeter.

1 Get a good layer of wax on your vehicle this will provide protection for your paintwork against the elements. It makes it easier to clean throughout the winter too, as the grime does not bond as easily to a smooth surface, so it will also cut your washing time in half.

“I take pride in my work and my clients trust me implicitly to give them the right advice for long term

Here are Stuart’s top five tips to keep your car at its best throughout the harshest winter;

2 Keep your windscreen clear. To prevent fogging on the inside soak a cloth in pure washing up liquid, let it dry and then wipe the inside of the windscreen. Winter screen wash - Make sure to use the right concentrate at the right dilution to prevent freezing. 3 Don’t cut corners. You need as much tread on your tyres as you can get over the winter months to ensure good traction. Make sure you have more than just the legal amount if you want to stay safe, it can be the difference between saving a few quid on tyres against replacing the car.

4 Don’t cut corners when cleaning. It’s all very well getting a wash at the side of the road for a fiver, but the damage that these outfits do to your paintwork is criminal. I have seen them using brick acid to clean your wheels, which also destroys your brake pads. They will often use the same bucket of water from one car to the next, so your car is getting washed with dirty, gritty water; the equivalent to washing with a brillo pad. 5 Ensure you have legal protection. Any valeter worth his salt will have liability insurance and a motor trade policy to cover any eventuality, if you don’t see the certificates, don’t risk your car.

If you would like to sample Stuart’s work then take advantage of a £10 cash back on a full valet or £20 cash back on any detail when you quote this article.

Tidy Stourbridge Campaign

“Don’t Be a Tosser!”

This is a story not only of ‘people power’ but also the power of the new ‘social media’ like “Twitter” and Face Book ! If you’ve already spotted it on “Twitter” and feel strongly about litter why not join the “Tidy Stourbridge” group for a very friendly “Pick and Pint” this Sunday 5th of December, at The Duke of William on Coventry street. Organiser Dave Colley says, “if the weather fails us, there’s always the bar to spend our time discussing future litter picking events!” Two local businessmen, Dave Colley and Russell Eden, set up the Tidy Stourbridge campaign using “Twitter” and calling it “Stourbridge Dump” ! (Which provoked a big furore in the local press at the time, and got Dudley Council involved!) Pictures of litter, dirt and filth were taken and posted on to “Twitter” under the hash tag of “Filthy Stourbridge”. The outspoken pair then went a step further by coining the slogan “Don’t be a Tosser!” which was used, again on “Twitter” to great effect. How many times have you seen people toss litter out of their cars onto the street? Yet more photo’s of ‘grot spots’ were taken and expanded into a Face Book site. Their campaign was so successful a group of “Tidy Stourbridge” enthusiasts now meet regularly in a pub for a pint and a litter pick. The group now have their own website:
