Welcome‌ The nip in the air as we rise from our slumbers pre-empts the coming of Autumn. As leaves start to turn to a pallet of reds and orange we search for a cloth to remove the dew from the windows of the car in preparation of our journey we undertake to work or the school run. The mornings are still light but the evenings now draw in until we religiously turn the clocks back for the ending of another summer. Although the autumn and winter seasons have not been as cold as in the past we must remember those who lack the income to turn up the heating when the weather is inclement. The elderly are the most vulnerable but there are others who are disabled or house bound who must not be forgotten. We are approaching Christmas, a season of goodwill, a time maybe to reflect on others, those who are away from their families, those who live on their own with no family, those who, in the past have given so much to the community and their country and are now sometimes forgotten. A time to Reflect. Maybe a time to act.

From the green shoots How refreshing to see that entrepreneurs have opened new businesses in Bewdley and the surrounding area. Clarity of Worcester, owned by June Lacy who also owns Bridal Train in Load Street, with it’s exquisite collection of wedding dresses, Christening gowns and bridal accessories is opening a Clarity in Bewdley complementing the Bridal Train with collections of designer wear for the Mother of the Bride and accessories all by leading names such as Frank Usher, Dusk, John Charles and a brand new designer Linea Raffelli together with casual wear for less formal occasions. The Southside Cafe Bar and Restaurant is featured as fine dining in Bewdley has again the feeling of excitement for it’s owners Adam and Sophie who, after re-opening, are establishing it as a daytime cafe bar and fine dining restaurant in the evenings. From new enterprises lets hope they become as successful as the established business like Justin 2 Carpets, Bewdley farm Shop, The Bakeaway, the Mug House and Angry Chef, Welch Gate Cafe and Guest house, Abacus Hair Stylists and the Bewdley Gallery with its fine art and prints and picture framing department all offering personal service

to the residents and tourists who visit this historic Georgian Town. The once abandoned Bournewood Nursery on Lickhill Road North, Stourport, has new owners who have vision and determination into rejuvenating the site as a garden centre catering for those wanting plants, shrubs, fencing, paving, pet food, cut flowers or fresh vegetables and with a large forecourt there isn’t any problem parking. Your Local Times would like to hear from other readers who are starting a business and would like to be featured in the magazine.

Enchanted Evenings are Brewing at West Midlands Safari Park There’s great fun brewing at West Midland Safari Park for autumn nights with the launch of their special Enchanted Evenings event, which opens on Friday, 2nd October 2009 and runs for a spell on selected evenings up to 1st November 2009. The many ghoulish goings-on includes Spooky Animal Encounters in the classroom, under the supervision of our very own witches, who will no doubt cast their magic with a little help from their best friends the Hissing Cockroach, Giant Millipede and scariest of all the Emperor Scorpion! During the event, Tree Tops pavilion will be the venue for Creative Capers, which hosts a variety of hands-on activity sessions to suit all budding artisans and those that enjoy creating a little ‘make believe’. There’s a chance to win a prize too, by joining in with the Treasure Hunt and a chance to discover more about Darwin and his exploits in the new Darwin Trail. The Trail incorporates an illuminated walk-through, with its ‘out of this world’ theming. Whilst the animal reserves will be closed throughout Enchanted Evenings, watch out for illuminated prehistoric creatures and more than 100 glowing animals and light boxes. The Sea Lions are up to their usual tricks with a stage version of a famous children’s classic tale - with a creepy twist, naturally - that will be performed each evening at the Sea Lion Theatre - and very popular it will be. The all-weather Discovery Trail exhibits will be open too! Visit Twilight Cave, with it’s free flying bats; Creepy Crawlies home to hundreds of tiny critters of the night; Seaquarium that exhibits some wonderful creatures that live in our oceans and Mark O’Shea’s Reptile World, home to some of the deadliest snakes and reptiles around. 8

Special Safari Brew for Enchanted Evenings at West Midland Safari Park To round off a perfectly Enchanted Evening, there are late night rides - including Venom and the Black Fly along with a host of fun games and attractions to suit every ghoul and ghostie. West Midland Safari Park’s Enchanted Evening Event starts at 5.30pm on Friday 2nd October 2009 and on 3rd, 4th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 16th, 17th, 18th October and then every evening from 23rd October until 1st November 2009 - including Halloween, of course! Southside Café Bar And Restaurant Sophie and Hazel are busy in the kitchen cooking the traditional breakfasts for it’s morning customers. The smell of the locally produced bacon wafts from the kitchen along with the sounds of the breakfast show on the radio creating the ambience of an early morning Café in creative mode. The chefs, in freshly laundered whites preparing the fresh tomatoes while keeping a watchful eye on the toast browning in the toasters ready to pop their crusts above the parapet and tending lovingly to the eggs, some boiling, some poaching and others frying in pans around the industrial hobs which align the edge of the kitchen. Plating up and service called the meal is hurriedly ferried to its eagerly waiting customers in the dining room. With a flourish of last breakfast orders the team are now in lunch time mode, hurriedly preparing fresh vegetables and portions of fish and meats which will adorn plates for those hungry travellers and regulars who venture in for a mid day drink and meal. The Contemporary British menu and Alex’s Ocean’s Realm seafood menu compete with the specials menu board which changes every week. Locally sourced fresh ingredients are prepared and cooked on the premises including home-made Soups of the day and they even make their own ice cream and have a range of home made cakes. Food is served from 8am till 4pm Monday to Friday in the cafe for our early bird breakfast menu as well as the lunch time specials.

Southside Café Bar and Restaurant is owned by Adam Wilcox and Sophie Cutler who acquired the business two months ago and have transformed the premises into this contemporary establishment. Their Award winning seafood Chef, Alexander Hogg, is preparing the evening meals using the finest ingredients and produce which befits this A La Carte restaurant situated above the ground floor Café Bar. This Restaurant, would grace any Michelin star establishment, with the cut glass chandeliers and the exquisite gold gilded framed mirrors which adorn the freshly decorated walls is perfect for a great relaxing night out, the setting, over looking the river Severn, has possibly one of the best views in Bewdley. Waiter/waitress service on hand as well as some of the best classical music from the likes of Mozart and Bach playing in the background sets the ambience for fine dining and is open 6 days a week from 5pm serving till 10pm with a 1am liquor license. The traditional Sunday Roasts are served from 12pm till 3pm in the Café but serving in the restaurant can also be made available by prior booking. Bewdley Farm Shop & Bakeaway My career in the fruit and veg trade started at the age of 14 when I worked as a Saturday lad in the local greengrocer store in my hometown of Wordsley. What began with sweeping the floor quickly grew to stacking shelves and finally being allowed to serve the customers. Even at this age I realised that this was the job I wanted to do and ultimately that I wanted to own my own business and upon leaving school I became manager of the shop. However, this dream was short lived as in 1989 the owner decided to sell up. So this is how I came to work in Bewdley. I heard that Alan Evans was looking for an assistant and applied for the job in Bewdley Farm Shop. Just 12 months into the new post Alan announced that he was to retire and was putting the shop up for sale! After much soul searching I decided to take the plunge and made Alan an offer. Thankfully it was accepted and I then had to convince the bank that I had a good business plan and hoped they would loan me the necessary money. Thankfully they liked my ideas and as they say “the rest is history………..” So that was 1990 and I was aged just 18 and had achieved my ambition to run my own business. I have worked extremely hard and still do. My day starts while many are sleeping and I arrive in Birmingham Wholesale market around 3.30 to ensure I get to pick the best of the days produce… fruit, veg,

fish and flowers. Then it’s back to Bewdley to set up the shop for the days trading. I try to buy as much produce as I can locally so this can involve visiting farms looking for seasonal deals too. I feel very committed to ensuring that Bewdley survives and feel it is extremely important that locals can obtain at least basic shopping in town without the need to venture further a field. It was this commitment that led me to my next venture. A whisper in town told me that the bakery was thinking of closing and this concerned me ! Every town needs a baker, a butcher and a fruit and veg shop and this town was on the edge of losing their bakers so it was probably a rash decision but I decided to purchase what is now known as Bewdley Bakeaway. I had no experience of this trade but knew the people of Bewdley and how to run a successful business so was convinced we could learn together. My fatherin - law had taken redundancy after years in the retail sector (albeit selling washing machines??) but somehow I convinced him to return to the workplace and he became the manager. We now offer bread, cakes and hot and cold takeaway as well as drinks and are just about to launch a new salad counter - which will be supplied by a very good local greengrocers I know !!!!!!!!! The Hare and Hounds at Shenstone

Nigel, Sally & Lorron

In the mid afternoon sun I sat in the gardens of the Hare and Hounds waiting for the chefs to appear from the kitchens after a busy lunch time service. Nigel, the joint owner and head chef, now relaxing with a freshly brewed pot of tea, relates his history of why he is passionate about cooking and his desire to own a restaurant. After serving in the Royal Air Force for five and a half years he enrolled at Dunstable catering college and the journey to his own establishment began with honing his skills acquired from those years in the RAF. He knew he wanted to cook with locally produced fresh produce and to the high standards which now famous restauranteurs achieve. After cooking at a few local pubs in his home town of Leighton Buzzard he eventually moved north and took over the cross keys at Alcester which became a launch pad for his own restaurant here in Shenstone, Worcestershire. Lorren, who was already employed at the Hare and Hounds, soon became Nigel’s Sous chef. At just eighteen she had knowledge of how fresh produce should be prepared and cooked having worked at the Gainsborough Hotel and their passion for good quality food has re-kindled the pubs fortunes. They work well together in the kitchen and with Sally, who is joint owner, working front of house and bar, make this a great team. The high lite, last year for Nigel, was being chosen

24

by Makro to give a display of freshly cooked food with Television Chef and personality James Martin at the Good Food Show at the NEC. Many a morning, Nigel can be seen harvesting fresh produce from his favourite vegetable plot or waiting expectantly for the delivery of the locally produced meat and chicken. A family business indeed, when Nigel’s mother and father and Sally’s mother visit, always help out on busy nights especially when entertainment like Paul Aaron, a brilliant Elvis impersonator, who will be performing on Christmas eve, are booked and the pub is full. Tickets are available on 01562 777380 and a great night is expected which starts at 6pm. Chefs that prepare and cook “proper” chips, select their seasonal vegetables, create great menus and put on entertainment have to be on the list of places to dine. Book now for the Christmas day three course lunch at just £39.95 per adult where two sittings are available. Check out their web site for the menu and entertainment including the November the 5th fireworks extravaganza which is themed to music and the New years eve party which has a buffet and goes on through the night, all for £7.50 per ticket. These are the chefs. This is the in place for fine dining and entertainment and Nigel’s now getting ready for the diners who have booked for tonight. Editorial by Robert Cooper

Whitlenge Garden Calendar January

OCTOBER Â

June

As autumn closes in on the garden it does so in a blaze of colour. Michaelmas daises are at their most spectacular.

February

March

Putting the garden to bed and getting ready for the winter months are the tasks that need to be done this month. Lifting tender perennials from the ground and storing them in a frost-free place before the first of the weather sets in. For Dahlias, cut off all but 15cm of stem and hang them upside down to dry off completely for a few days. Store in a box of sand free from damp. Make sure that there is not to warm as they will start shooting too soon. Dahlia tubers can be over wintered. In warm districts they may be left in the ground and covered with compost and straw, which may act as suffiencient protection.

July

August

In the vegetable plot now is the time to start sowing winter cabbage and lettuce but these later sowings need to make under glass.

April

May

Lawns will benefit from scarification and the autumn feed but cutting should now be done with the blades of the mower set higher. Autumn pruning and winter digging should take place this month making sure you use plenty of compost to enrich the soil. Planting of Autumn Crocuses to a depth of 2 inches and tulips can be made along with any shrubs and trees while the soil is warm will give the roots a start choosing variegated and evergreen shrubs for year round interest.

November Clearing ponds of debris. Manuring vegetable plots. Collecting up leaves for leaf mould. Continue to prepare the garden for winter. 28

“It’s Probably A Virus…” You wake up one day to find you have a high temperature, no energy and dehydrated. After a quick reality check and a brief recollection of the previous night’s events, you decide the symptoms are not selfinflicted and somewhat beyond the healing properties of a strong black coffee, so you visit the docs in the hope you will discover what strange and mysterious disease you may have contracted. As you sit in the waiting room with a snotty handkerchief and a forlorn visage, I suppose it’s no surprise, after your allotted 5 minute consultation is over, that you hear the verdict – “It’s probably a virus” with a puzzled and frustrated GP on the other side of the desk, scratching his / her head while they tell you to go home, put your feet up and sit it out because there’s nothing they can do for you anyway !! What about computer viruses, where did they begin ?? A program called “Rother J” was the first computer virus to appear “in the wild” - that is, outside the single computer or lab where it was created. Written in 1981 by Richard Skrenta, it attached itself to the Apple DOS 3.3 operating system and spread via floppy disk. This virus was created as a practical joke when Richard Skrenta was still in high school. It was injected in a game on a floppy disk. On its 50th use the Elk Cloner virus would be activated, infecting the computer and displaying a short poem beginning “Elk Cloner: The program with a personality.” Since those early days, with the massive growth of the internet, viruses have now become a major threat not just to big businesses, but also to YOU, the home user. We are often asked why hackers send out viruses, I usually answer - Why do people smash windows, trash bus stops or spray paint the local monument ? A degree in human psychology might help here !! Although there are many millions of viruses circulating around the vast global network of computers we now call the internet, not all are harmless. Some of the worst varieties can delete, corrupt or even wipe your computer’s data store ( hard drive ). In many ways I have always compared such an “attack” as akin to nothing more than organized vandalism or maliciousness. How do you protect yourself from such harmful programs ?? Well, it helps if you have a good ant-virus

/ anti-spyware program installed. The one we usually recommend and install is totally FREE and can be downloaded from http://www.free.grisoft.com, it’s called AVG 8.5 and is a superb program that will not affect the performance of your computer. Other than that, be careful what websites you visit, file sharing sites are rife ( Limewire etc ) and, without going into too much detail - the more salubrious and saucy sites are riddled with malicious software. If ever you are given a disc, be sure to scan it first. This also applies to emails you might receive, especially from someone you may already know and most especially if it has an attachment – after all, they may not know they’ve sent you a virus until you call and tell them!!! Such is the nature of a virus. A veritable cyber-minefield my friends, be careful where you step and don’t stop taking the tablets…..
