Emily Jayne Emily Jayne Image Consultancy enables women to transform themselves through changing their image. Women often forget how to best look after themselves. (*In my experience, especially after having children and being used to wearing baggy T shirts and jeans-Editor*) Through her Colour Analysis, Styling, Personal Shopping, Wardrobe Weeding and Make Up lesson services, Emily Jayne can make all these struggles a thing of the past.

Consultations take place in Emily’s Studio in Bromsgrove or in your own home. Young Mother of two, Andrea Bradley, set up her own business so asked Emily Jane to help re-design her wardrobe to make herself look more like a business woman and less like a Mum (*not that there’s anything wrong with looking like Mum, just Andrea wanted to look like she meant business!*) “I can honestly say Emily Jane transformed my look. She showed me how to dress for my shape and colouring and now I feel so comfortable and confident in what I wear.” Emily says her job satisfaction comes from positive changes she sees in women “I love seeing the extra added ‘oomph’ and self confidence that women can simply gain through finding out how to make the best of themselves.

A wardrobe full of clothes and nothing to wear? Let me help you to make shopping an enjoyable and rewarding experience, make the most of your existing wardrobe, and make clothing mistakes a thing of the past!

Derek Norval - Curative Hypnotherapist & NLP Practitioner We wish you a great Christmas and, when you make your New Year’s resolutions give yourself a solid start. Contact Derek to arrange a shot or two of psychological super glue! Eat, drink and be merry; for tomorrow we take a good look at ourselves...and decide to get Derek to give us some hypnotic assistance to stick to our self improvement plans! Yes it’s true; we really do need all the help we can get to start the New Year with a clean slate! Rob’s story: “I used to smoke, eat junk food & binge eat. And yes, of course, I was always stressed. But I kidded myself that one day I’d sort myself out. I thought I was doing okay. I used to tell all my friends and family that I was just happy “doing my own thing.” Then one day I saw Derek’s advert and was curious to find

out more. After an exploratory phone conversation, I decided ‘okay I’ve got nothing to lose, I’ll give it a go’ so I booked some sessions. “The rest is history. Derek helped me enormously; in both psychological and practical ways. I soon felt back in control of myself. And what I’ve gained is not only my own self respect but also the respect of others. I finally feel genuinely happy.” So why not book yourself in now – there’s great demand for help and support at the end of this highly emotional festive season. Bromsgrove Allergy & Nutrition Consultancy Did you know the food you are eating may be making you ill?? When it comes to health and nutrition, Caroline Sproule is an expert. With over ten years of experience treating clients with mild to chronic problems, Caroline knows the secret is to unlock and identify food intolerances, imbalances and deficiencies within the body. Rosemary from Droitwich went to see Caroline after suffering with chronic migraines for 30 years. “Over the last three years since I saw Caroline, I have not had one migraine or headache, which has made a tremendous change to my life. I could not believe that after suffering for so many years it all came down to food intolerances. The other symptoms I had such as itchy eyes, ears and blocked nose all cleared up too and I feel so much better. I can’t thank Caroline enough for all her help and advice. More importantly thank you for giving me back my life!” Caroline tailors her advice carefully to suit the individual. It’s important to look at lifestyle, diet, and body type before advising you what vitamins

20

and health supplements your body needs. Caroline is passionate about helping people get more energy by eating the right foods for their body type. Food has a huge impact on our health. But we are all Caroline Sproule different in our make up, so it’s important to find out if you have are eating any foods that don’t suit you.. Just by making small changes to your diet and lifestyle you can improve your health and well being tremendously. “I have never thought that I would write a testimonial about any healthcare that I have received over the years for my longstanding condition of ulcerative colitis. However, after being successfully treated by Caroline Sproule at Bromsgrove Allergy Centre, I have had a radical change of mind. I thank you and I am deeply grateful to you for your months of care and successful treatment. I started this year feeling better than I have done in years, feeling stronger, more energetic and with completely settled normal bowel function!” Joseph, Redditch If you or someone close to you would like to find out if you have any Food Intolerances and would like to regain your health and energy, please call Caroline Sproule on 01527 834624 to make an appointment.

How to avoid pain in the back this Christmas!

By our own Health Correspondent, Sue MacLusky

“Ow, my back hurts!” How many of us wake up,(having over done it at Christmas), searching for the pain killers. Taking ibuprofen or (prescribed) drugs to ease muscular pain can help. However, the best thing to do is get moving! www.backcare.org.uk has excellent advice & exercises for back pain relief. Strengthen your core muscles to help support your back. Pilates and yoga are good for this.

Needless to say, massage is enormously beneficial, but I would say that wouldn’t I – being a Holistic Massage Therapist I am really passionate about the work I do! OK, if you can’t get in for a massage, here’s some things you can do at home:

To beat those winter blues call Sue 07810 578 075 BESPOKE MASSAGE THERAPIES

• Isn’t it about time you felt great? • Would you like to relax at a deep level? • Do you want to let go of all your stresses & strains? “I suffer with my back but since coming to Sue for regular deep massage I've noticed a huge improvement. Plus I'm more relaxed and have a better quality of life thanks to Sue”

Ben Hall, Stourbridge

Stand on one foot Try raising one foot higher than another when you’re standing. In the kitchen, put a sturdy box or a couple of old books by the sink, and put a foot up while you’re standing there. When you’re standing in a queue, use the curb. Periodically change position by putting up the opposite foot. This shifting of weight gives alternating back muscles a chance to relax. Stretch like a cat before you rise! Before you jump out of bed, lie on your back and very slowly stretch your arms overhead. Then gently pull your knees up to your chest, one at a time. Once you’re up, put your hands on your buttocks and then lean back very slowly to stretch out your spine. Www.sootheoutstress.co.uk Tel: 07810 578 075

Your Portraits Deserve the Best from an Award Winning Photographer After twenty-five years as a photographer my wife Debra has now joined the business. Over the years I have won over thirty awards both in wedding, fashion and portrait photography, but these days most of our photography is baby, children, family, pets and weddings.

From our cosy studio in Lax Lane, where we have been for over twelve years, we can accommodate large groups of up to seventeen people, with a large car park and on the ground floor, few studios have such facilities. Our easygoing attitude we find relaxes the client and gets the most out of the subject. Dogs too are great to work with, sometimes included in the family sessions or as a portrait on their own. Being a qualified photographer with The Master Photographer Association we guarantee some fantastic portraits for that special occasion.

The Harriers There is a rallying cry coming from Kidderminster Harriers – for the whole community come and back their local team! A recent Boardroom takeover at the club revealed some serious financial troubles at Aggborough that, unfortunately, will not go away without the hard work and fantastic support of not just everyone based there, but indeed the whole area. One of the most promising initiatives to come forward from the crisis is a 2020 Club Lottery, set up by the Kidderminster Harriers Independent Supporters Trust (KHIST). Essentially, the Lottery allows fans to play for monthly cash prizes – by purchasing draw numbers for £1. Supporters can play with as much as they like each month by Standing Order, whether it be £1, £5, £50 for £500 – the big idea is to just get everyone involved. The Lottery is open to ALL – you don’t have to be a KHIST member to join; you needn’t even necessarily be a huge Harriers fan, but with the chance to win 15% of all takings as each month’s top prize, there’s something in it for everyone! Harriers Press Officer Matt Wall told Your Local Times: “This is a fantastic initiative and we thank KHIST for coming forward with it and taking it on.

32

“Myself and my whole family are playing once draws start in January. Some of us have chucked in for £10 per-month, some of us

more, and one or two of us less, but we are all doing our bit. “It’s a fantastic way to prove that financial troubles don’t just need to be solved by people with endless pockets – this Lottery alone has the chance to raise thousands of pounds for the club each month, and all from hundreds of loyal fans who are able to find just a few pounds do show their support.” For more information on the 2020 Club Lottery, head to www.khist.org.uk, the home of KHIST, or the Harriers’ own website at www.harriers.co.uk. Either way, just play!

The Big Fish Angler Extraordinaire

So the winter has finally arrived, daytime temperatures are well below double figures and we are waking up to frosts on the ground. Now it’s time for real anglers to go fishing! The big problem is you can buy all the clothing to keep nice and warm but not every species of fish wants to bite in such conditions. At this time of year one of your best bets is the chub, a species that will feed in the coldest of conditions. Indeed many is the time I’ve had chub when the fringes of the river are lined with ice! My favourite tactic for the species is feeding mashed bread and fishing a popped up piece of bread crust as the hook-bait. I make my mash feed bait the night before I go fishing and it’s simply old bread mashed by hand with a small amount of warm water and in that I put about 5ml of SBS Crab Flavour. Oh by the way make sure you add the crab flavour outside in the fresh air or you will be in the doghouse with the missus for a day or two! The bread bait I always buy a “Bloomer” from the Bewdley bread shop next to the butchers. The centre of the bloomer I add to the mash and the “outer” I keep for my hook-baits. When I arrive at the venue I walk as far as I feel capable on the day and throw a small handful of mash in every likely looking swim. I’m usually looking for overhanging trees, wooden structures or reed-beds. These are the spots where big chub will be hiding waiting

34

Monster chub from the river

for samples of food to drift by. Then I work my way back to the car fishing each of the “pre-baited” swims. I use a quivertip rod, 6lb line and size 8 hook. The rig could not be simpler. I just put one, two or three SSG shots on the line about four inches away from the hook. These sink to the bottom and the bread-crust hook bait floats up 4ins above it, no self respecting chub can resist this presentation! Beware you can get a take as soon as you cast in the swim in fact the big chub of 6-09 you see in the photograph was the first cast of the day and the bite came a second after the bait had hit the bottom. I actually think that I hit that chub on the head to get a bite that quick! Joking apart that happens to me on a regular basis especially when you have pre-baited a swim. Very often when I move swim I will go and bait up the swims I have not fished a second time which gives the fish even more confidence and very often the swim that has been baited the most will produce the biggest fish. We are lucky where we live because the River Severn is one big chub swim with literally hundreds of areas that will hold big chub. By the way, White Swan Pictorials, who own a lot of water locally are asking for members. This is a rare chance to become a member of a very exclusive old angling club. Anyone interested phone Dave Sparkes on 01905 770523 - the membership secretary. The club has stretches on a number of rivers in the Midlands and Wales and also a number of excellent stillwater fisheries holding big fish of most species, if you are a serious angler, give Dave a call. Earlier I mentioned Crab Flavour in my bread mash well I’m a great believer in flavours for all species especially through the winter months when you want to attract fish but not over feed them. With this in mind why not pop down to the SBS Shop in Kidderminster and have a word with me or my manager Andy Walker and we have stocks of flavours that will attract anything from dace to white shark! Seriously flavours and attractants have moved a long way in the last few years so don’t rule them out by saying “flavours are only a gimmick.” Believe me they certainly are not - ask any successful angler that uses them!

Local Gardening Calendar

Local Times

Whitlenge diary December To improve garden planting schemes this month you can look to the florist’s choice for Christmas wreaths, garlands and arrangements. The ubiquitous holly comes into its own this month and is a must for all decorations.

Hedera is a must in all its forms heart shaped, arrow shaped, plain and variegated and is one of the most useful plants a flower arranger could have and is therefore an obvious addition to the winter garden.

Most holly varieties are either male or female and need to be planted near to each other in order for the female to bear berries. Ilex aquifolium Handsworth New silver is a particularly fine female with a heavy crop of orange red berries and contrasting cream edged grey – green leaves. Despite its name of “Silver Queen” is an attractive male that will act as a pollinator for female hollies. If space is limited “J C van Tol” is a self fertile variety producing red berries with the added advantage of having less prickly leaves. To compliment the holly in your decoration use Cupressus macrocarpa “Gold crest”, this has striking lime green foliage. Danae racemosa is an essential evergreen that is easy to grow and produces long lasting red fruits.

Skimmia japonica subsp. Reevesiana bears berries for many months of the year. An evergreen it prefers acid soil and a dose of iron if the leaves look tired and yellow. If you are feeling energetic now is the time to plant bare root trees and mulch young hedges and fruit trees with well rotted compost after giving them a feed of bone meal. Otherwise as the year draws to a close it’s a good time to reflect on what has been, and dream of the gardening year to come. Seasons greetings and a peaceful time to all.

Even in Shakespeare’s time English summers were tricky “Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summers lease hath all too short a date” so lets be ready when and if it arrives to enjoy every minute. 36

Movie Madness - Part 3 (Conclusion) The Digital Age (At Last !!) So when did the age of the “digital movie” arrive and what exactly is digital anyway ??? Hopefully, over the next several paragraphs I will attempt to brush aside the curtains of confusion to maybe answer a few nagging questions to bring you kicking and screaming into the 21st Century !! So, first of all, let me compare analogue ( vhs tape for example ) with digital ( CD, DVD etc ). Very simply, ‘analogue’ is used to describe systems which operate using the principle of signals whose characteristic varies in proportion to some other function which they represent. An example is a gramophone record where the depth of the groove varies in exact proportion with the sound pressure level recorded. By contrast, ‘digital’ systems work on the principle of numerical representations and calculation. Computer systems work on a binary level ( 0 or 1 for off and on ) so with the rise of the computer came the obvious knock-on, everything’s gone digital !!!! As mentioned in the last issue, Video CD’s were introduced in 1993, the first truly digital movies. In that case, I suppose we could say that movies entered the digital age in 1993 – 17 years ago, but as we’re slow to embrace new technology in this country, it would be another 5 years before the DVD format hit Europe. Like any new technology, DVD players were expensive, dvd movies and blank discs likewise ( when recordable dvd’s first came out, a writer cost £700, blank discs – about £12 each !! Today, a dvd-writer for your computer will cost you around £30 and blank discs, 30p each, aaaahh, the joys of technological progress !!!! ). Of course, when the first dvd players arrived, it was not possible to record onto them so good ol’ VHS continued to dominate, but as prices fell, dvd recorders, writers and blank discs rocketed down to the point where it’s simply not cost effective to operate a vhs based entertainment system anymore, VHS and Betamax – RIP. With a basic dvd player costing around £20 or less and dvd movies free with your daily newspaper ( imagine attaching a vhs tape to the front of the 38

Daily Mail, I somehow don’t think your local paperboy would be too pleased having to hump around a sack the size of a small car... ) there’s never been a better time to embrace this wonderful technology. I must admit, having witnessed the evolution of home entertainment from its humble beginnings in Super 8, when VHS came along I really did not think it would take off – how wrong I was ( I’m happy to report !! ) Of course, the film companies love it, not only can they charge you for seeing their movies at the cinemas, they’ve creamed the VHS format, the DVD scene is flourishing and we now have Blu-Ray and digital downloads, not to mention the current 3D craze - and they reckon the film industry is floundering............!!! From a movie buff perspective ( such as we are ) there’s never been a better time. For example, a subscription to LoveFilm ( www.lovefilm.com ) can cost you as little as £6 a month and to order your favourite movies you don’t even need to leave the comfort of your armchair. With a PC and a relatively fast broadband connection, you can even “stream” movies onto your computer screen without so much as a tape or disc in sight. Digital compression enables you to store as many as 10 movies on a USB memory stick and with the rise in popularity of portable media players ( I-Pod, I-Phone ctc ) you can watch your fave movies on the bus, in the car, bath, classroom in glorious digital high definition – who would have believed you could watch the latest release from Columbia Pictures on your mobile phone, unbelievable !! ( They call it “convergance”, I’ll leave you to look it up !! ) The latest generation of Game Consoles have also jumped on the band-wagon. Far from the bleeps and boings of the classic “Pong” tennis game, today’s machines can store not only movies, but photos, tv programs and music too. As the proud owners of a Playstation 3, it has fast become the centre of our entertainment universe. I encourage you to embrace this digital revolution and revel in the vast library of movies it has to offer, you won’t be disappointed !! Steve Gould

M Bowen Design – it’s all about YOU! You don’t have to be a rich celebrity to hire an Interior designer, as Sue MacLusky found out when she met Michaela Bowen. Sue first asked Michaela to tell us why someone like us (ie a regular dude, neither rich or famous) would want to hire an Interior designer?

I deal with everyday people just like you, often with very small budgets! What I enjoy doing is talking to you first to find out your passions in terms of fabrics and colour. For example, some people like to blend the old and the new, whereas others like to go for a classic or ultra modern look. It’s all about getting the balance right and finding out what works for you. But isn’t Interior Design all about fashion and ‘good taste’? No, it’s all about you! It’s my job to find out what works best for you. What I love to do is to design a home which you’ll feel so wonderfully settled and at home in you’ll be purring like a cat in front of the fire! I’m passionate about what I do and believe it’s all about enriching your life by making your home environment the most beautiful and perfect place for you to be. Michaela Bowen is a young & dynamic Interior Designer. Her business is called M Bowen Design and her motto is “It’s all about YOU” !

Tidy Stourbridge Campaign

“Don’t Be a Tosser!”

This is a story not only of ‘people power’ but also the power of the new ‘social media’ like “Twitter” and Face Book ! If you’ve already spotted it on “Twitter” and feel strongly about litter why not join the “Tidy Stourbridge” group for a very friendly “Pick and Pint” this Sunday 5 th of December, at The Duke of William on Coventry street. Organiser Dave Colley says, “if the weather fails us, there’s always the bar to spend our time discussing future litter picking events!” Two local businessmen, Dave Colley and Russell Eden, set up the Tidy Stourbridge campaign using “Twitter” and calling it “Stourbridge Dump” ! (Which provoked a big furore in the local press at the time, and got Dudley Council involved!) Pictures of litter, dirt and filth were taken and posted on to “Twitter” under the hash tag of “Filthy Stourbridge”. The outspoken pair then went a step further by coining the slogan “Don’t be a Tosser!” which was used, again on “Twitter” to great effect. How many times have you seen people toss litter out of their cars onto the street? Yet more photo’s of ‘grot spots’ were taken and expanded into a Face Book site. Their campaign was so successful a group of “Tidy Stourbridge” enthusiasts now meet regularly in a pub for a pint and a litter pick. The group now have their own website:

So if you want to make a difference to your town, why not get involved! It’s fun! Sue MacLusky
