Students create logo in glass Students from Bewdley High School and Sixth Form Centre have been getting creative at Bewdley Museum. William Wilson, one of the museum’s resident artists, has been helping the youngsters to create a stained glass panel. Seven students from Year 10 and 12 took part in the workshop where they designed and made a stained glass panel emblazoned with the schools logo. It will be housed in the school. The students gave the workshop a unanimous verdict of it being “a very enjoyable day”. Councillor Tracey Onslow, Wyre Forest District Council’s Cabinet Member for Community and Partnership Services said, “Links between the museum and local schools are always important, not only from the perspective of helping children to understand history but also helping to keep craftsmanship skills alive. The hands-on crafts that the museum offers really enrich the learning of students and teachers.”

Mayor or ‘Strong Leader’? Residents are being asked for their views on how Wyre Forest District Council is governed. An online survey ‘Mayor or Strong Leader? Is available from the homepage of the Council’s website www.wyreforestdc.gov.uk. It is asking for views on changes to the authority’s decision-making arrangements. The consultation is also seeking opinions on the frequency of local elections. The Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Act 2007 requires the Council to adopt a new governance model before the end of year. There are two models which may be introduced. One option is to have a directly-elected mayor and Cabinet Executive – this would be subject to a referendum. The other option is the so called ‘Strong Leader’ model, where the Leader is elected by council but the Leader appoints members of the cabinet and allocates responsibility for executive functions. The Council also wants to know the public’s view on the frequency of elections. At the moment there are 4
District Council elections three years out of every four, and on each of these occasions a third of the Councillors are up for election. Residents are being asked whether this should continue or whether the District Council elections should take place once every four years, with all Councillors up for election. Anyone who does not have access to a computer can fill in the questionnaire online at one of the Worcestershire Hub Customer Service Centres at Kidderminster Town Hall, or Civic Centre, Stourporton-Severn. Printed copies of the questionnaire are also available from Worcestershire Hubs. The closing date for responses is 5 pm on 8th October 2010. More information about the proposed political structures and the potential strengths and weaknesses of the models is available on the Council’s website www.wyreforestdc.gov.uk. A final decision on the options will be made at a special meeting of the full Council before the end of 2010.

The Big Fish Angler Extraordinaire
This time of year is my favourite period for surface fishing, in other words taking fish with baits fished on the surface rather than below the surface. I think part of the attraction to this kind of fishing is so little gear is needed for a small bag, a rod and a landing net and you are away. I usually take a large bag of Chum Dog Mixer biscuits with me plus a bag of mini marshmallows - both make excellent surface baits for carp. Oh I nearly forgot; a good pair of polarized glasses so you can see the fish near the surface. Any prolonged period of hot bright weather will see all and I mean all the carp swimming on the surface. Indeed if you want to see the potential size of the fish of any water visit it on a hot day and spot the big fish in there its as easy as that for there is not a carp that does not like to come and sunbathe on a hot bright day! I usually start a surface fishing session by walking around the lake and seeing where the fish are sitting or patrolling then I start firing out my “freebies” trying to gain the confidence of the

fish before I actually cast a baited hook out there amongst them. On a good day when you first start firing out the mixers only the odd fish will show interest but after half an hour or so they will start coming up and taking a number of mixers before they sink back lower into the water. Now is the time to cast out but be careful making sure you don’t hit those wary fish on the head with bait or float. I tend to overcast and slowly reel the rig back into the “taking zone”. Now don’t watch the carp, watch the float and line for if you strike when the mouth opens around the bait the chances are you will miss the take. Wait till the line tightens and the float shoots across the surface - now strike! It’s one of the most magical moments of fishing seeing a big carp engulfing a surface bait and then exploding on the surface and sending a spray of water for yards. Who said fishing was boring!!! Having landed the fish now you have to through the whole process again. Rest the swim and let the fish once again gain confidence taking baits on the surface without getting hooked. After the first fish it may take an hour before they start taking again but they will and this is the time to start fishing again. Late afternoon right on to dusk is a great time to surface fish so at this time of year you can get a four hour session in after work. There really is nothing better than taking a couple of big carp on the surface. Indeed I would rather catch one carp on the surface than five on the bottom. But do check before starting fishing that the venue allows “surface fishing” for some waters do actually ban, yes ban, one of the most exciting forms of fishing. Don’t ask my why.

Barclays helps secure new kitchen for local school The PTA of local school, Far Forest Lea Memorial CE Primary School, are jumping for joy after 10 months of organising numerous fundraising events throughout this current academic year to benefit the school’s pupils, recently securing Barclays Bank’s £ for £ Scheme to top up their fundraising initiatives. PTA Chair, Mrs Penny Child, said: “This year we have managed to raise a phenomenal amount for the school’s PTA fund and with the generous support from Barclays Bank £ for £ Scheme, we are now finally in the position to move forward and obtain quotes for replacing the school’s existing kitchen to make it a more child friendly area for the children to work in. “Our thanks to all our children, their families, the school’s teaching staff and event visitors for helping with our fundraising initiatives as it is through their support that we are now able to get this work done.” This year’s PTA events have included pupil’s cinema nights, School Christmas fair, a festive bike treasure hunt through the Wyre Forest, organising a monthly quiz night held at and sponsored by The Royal Forester, and the PTA’s main event of the year their annual summer fair at Callow Hill Show Ground. Lynne Rickhuss from Barclays Bank said: “I really enjoyed the event, it was a lot of fun and it is great to raise so much money for the school. It is fantastic

Bewdley in Bloom success for Far Forest pupils Far Forest Lea Memorial CE Primary School pupils and staff are jumping for joy after securing not one, but two 1st places, a 3rd and a Special Award for Enthusiasm and Effort in this year’s Bewdley in Bloom competition. The school was acknowledged in 4 categories receiving a 1st for School, 1st for Tubs, a Special Award for Enthusiasm and Effort, and a 3rd place for their Vegetable Garden. Children from every class took part planting around the school, filling tubs ready to compete 10
in the adult’s class for tubs and vegetable garden to create their very own floral veggie looks, for which the children were placed 3rd and received a Special Award for Effort and Enthusiasm with judges commenting that the children’s entries were a ‘sensational result’. Headteacher, Mrs Tara Collins-Bullock, stated: “I would like to say a huge thank you to Mrs Mel Annis and Mrs Sandra Edwards and the PTA for all their hard work in helping us accomplish such a wonderful achievement.”

Understanding Reiki Healing In very simplistic terms Reiki is a safe, gentle, non-intrusive hands-on healing technique for use on both the self and others. In reality however it is far more than this and can be used to bring about both spiritual awareness and personal growth. In Japan, its country of origin, the word Reiki can refer to any form of healing using spiritual energy but here in the west, the word is only used when we are referring to the form of healing developed by a Japanese Buddhist called Mikao Usui. The word Reiki itself literally translates as ‘Universal Life Force Energy’. The first part; ‘Rei’, acknowledges that there is a higher intelligence which guides the creation and functioning of the
universe whilst ‘Ki’, refers to the life force energy that flows through all living things. Fish Pie This pie can use a variety of fish. Take a look in your local farm shop for off cuts of fish and special offers. Try to add some smoked fish such as haddock or cod to the recipe as it brings extra flavour to the dish. Also a few prawns or even crab sticks give interest and flavour. Potatoes The potatoes are mashed and Maris Pipers are a good variety to use. Ask your local farm shop about other varietys to use. Sauce Many sauces in fish pies have cheese added. Remember that if you have strong smoked fish in your recipe the cheese flavour will fight the fish flavour. If your fish flavours are mild add more cheese to the dish but keep to a mild cheese if using smoked fish.
Method
Eggs (Optional) It surprises many people to find egg in their fish pie but traditionally it has always been an ingredient of this recipe. The hard boiled eggs can either be sliced and placed between the fish sauce and the potato layer or halved or quartered and mixed in with the fish sauce.
Place the fish, onion, carrots, celery, bay leaf and milk into a pan simmer gently until the fish is cooked. Drain and keep the milk.
Ingredients Recipe (Serves four) 500 g of assorted fish 600 ml (one pint) of milk 50 g flour 125 g butter 2 stalks of celery One small onion finely chopped One small carrot finely chopped One bay leaf Salt and ground black pepper to taste 800 g peeled potatoes Half a cup of frozen peas Half a cup of prawns and or crabsticks 50g grated cheese Four hard boiled eggs 14
Preheat the oven to 200 degrees C or gas mark 6 Cut the potatoes into even sized pieces and place in a pan of salted boiling water and simmer until the potatoes are cooked. Drain and mash the potatoes with half of the butter.
Flake the fish pieces and place along with the vegetables into an oven proof dish along with the prawns, crabsticks and peas. Place the milk back onto the hob to simmer. Take half of the remaining butter and mix with the flour. Add the floured butter gradually to the milk until it forms a thick sauce. Add three quarters of the cheese and pour over the fish and vegetable mix. Optional. Slice the hard boiled eggs and layer on top of the fish sauce mix. Carefully spoon the mashed potato over the top and make sure it spreads to the edge of the dish to provide a seal. Scatter the remaining cheese over the top and place on a baking tray in the middle of the preheated oven for thirty minutes or until the top is golden and bubbling. Serve immediately.

Where Do I Begin??? Those of you of a certain age will no doubt remember a time without TV and in some cases, radio. How many of you can remember a time without computers?? ( Did you know that 25% of 5 year olds now have their own computer ???? ) Back in the “Good Old Days”, if you had one TV in the household you were considered well off ( and it was minuscule and black & white ), nowadays it’s not unusual to find one in every room, including the bathroom. One only has to take a trip to the nearest Currys or Comet to find the latest in flat screen TV’s, some bordering on the gargantuan at a price, relatively speaking, way lower than the first valve sets to hit the high street. In fact the next wave of flat screen TV’s are going 3D, so if you have a spare £2000 kicking around.....but I digress. The good old PC has now become an integral part of our lives and without it, we feel lost, abandoned and probably bored - “Wonder what’s going on with Facebook, what new tunes are on Limewire, I haven’t had my Bet365 fix today, need to check my bank balance and order those concert tickets” and so on and so on !! How ever did we cope before computers ???? So for the rest of this article, I’m going to explore the birth of the PC and how it’s evolved into today’s multi-faceted, time saving tool / entertainment centre / music studio / post box. What was the first “personal computer” ?? Well, I can remember going a day trip to Chance College in Smethwick whilst I was in the Secondary School ( 1968 – 74 ) where we were given a guided tour of the ( fanfare ) “Computer Room”. A room bigger than St George’s Hall with enough cooling to keep the nearest branch of Iceland happy for years and the best part about it, nowadays a £10 scientific calculator purchased from any high street store would probably give it a run around the block. As for the home computer, Edmund Berkeley first described Simon in his 1949 book, “Giant Brains, or Machines That Think” and went on to publish plans to build Simon in a series of Radio Electronics issues in 1950 and 1951. The cost of the kit ( yes, you had to build it yourself folks !! ) was $300. At this point in time, calculators didn’t exist and there was probably more computing power in a tv remote than this wonder of modern technology. Moving on a few years, after a number of companies tried to jump on the bandwagon, it took a small company called IBM to first brand their 5150 series machine as a Personal Computer (PC), priced at a whopping $1565.00, it wasn’t exactly affordable by the vast majority, and was released on August 12th 1981 – only 29 years ago. The unit used 5 ¼” floppy discs for storage, which were a big improvement over the original 8” floppy. As time progressed and prices dropped, floppy discs got smaller ( 3½” ) and PC’s were fitted with a Hard Drive for long-term storage.

With the advent of CD ( Compact Disc ) in 1982, I suppose it was inevitable that they would be embraced by the fast-growing computer market, especially as they had the capacity to store 650 megabytes of data, when compared with the measly 1.44 megabytes of a 3½” floppy !!!! In 1984, CD-Rom drives were added to the architecture of the PC and it was at this point, I believe, that the deed was done, this was the turning point.... Suddenly, it was possible to view and store pictures, video, music and sounds, not just boring data, spreadsheets and documents - the home computer got sexy... Compare CD with the new kid on the block, Blu-Ray ( which can store up to 50 gigabytes – the equivalent of 78 CD’s !!! ), again the mind boggles how far we’ve come in such a short period of time. The internet ( which needs no introduction ) came along in 1985 and has grown beyond belief over the past 25 years. So in conclusion, even though the 80s have always been seen as a bad time for music and fashion, it was a decade that established the home computer and since then, we’ve embraced it, become dependant on it and can’t imagine a time without it – enjoy. The Harriers The brand new season edges ever closer for Kidderminster Harriers and in just a few short weeks you’ll again be able to get your fix of local football. Boss Steve Burr has finally been able to work at putting together his own side following his arrival half-way through last term, and if the signing of the likes of Keith Briggs, Lee Vaughan, Tom Shaw and Dave Hankin to name a few are anything to go by, it should again be an entertaining year at Aggborough. There has been a summer return to the club for former goalkeeper Daniel Lewis, whilst other new signings include England C International Tom Shaw and defender Mark Albrighton, snapped up from last season’s Blue Square Premier Champions Stevenage. Kidderminster Canal Festival Kidderminster is hosting its first ever Canal Festival this summer! The canal side will come to life on 19th-21st August and residents and visitors are invited to the town centre to join the fun. Boat owners are especially encouraged to visit and moor up over the festival period.
the ReWyre Regeneration Initiative which aims to improve the canal side areas in the town centre.
Festivities will be centred on the canal at Weavers Wharf and will include the ‘Dreamcatcher’ passenger barge, offering trips along canal, and the ‘Scorpio’ working heritage boat, giving visitors the chance to explore the local industrial heritage of the canals. A number of trade boats, including The Cheese Boat, will also be moored in the town selling goods from the waterside.
Councillor Stephen Clee, Wyre Forest District Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning and Economic Regeneration said, “This Festival is an excellent way to celebrate the canals and help to re-establish their importance in relationship with the heritage of Kidderminster. The canals have been an under-utilised feature of Kidderminster over recent years and our aim is to bring them back to life. We want to see boaters, locals and visitors enjoying this part of the canal network and encourage them to come and spend time in Kidderminster.”
A live entertainment stage will be set up close to the canal with acts showcasing local talent running throughout the festival. A European market will add to the atmosphere offering continental goods and Kidderminster’s regular town market will be extended to the Friday and Saturday. For those who like to explore the area, the District Council’s walking co-ordinator will be guiding walks of the canal side around the town. This event is a part of

We have all seen the tin but what is the main ingredient of WD-40? What does WD-40 stand for? ‘Water Displacement #40’. Like most products and inventions they begin by trying to solve a problem. This was to search for a rust preventative solvent and degreaser to protect missile parts. WD-40 was created in 1953 by three technicians at the San Diego Rocket Chemical Company. Its name comes from the project that was to find a ‘water displacement’ compound. They were successful with the 40th formulation, thus WD-40. Ken East (one of the original founders) says “there is nothing in WD-40 that would hurt you.” It has many uses. Try it on your shower door where you get the dried watermarks. A yearly stroll through the season on Fred’s allotment August is often the summer month with blue skies and hot so a lot of time may be spent watering. You can save yourself some time by preventing water loss by mulching with a layer of organic matter, which will help preserve moisture but may encourage slugs so you will need to take action against them. Another good method of preventing water loss is to hoe. This not only kills the weeds but breaks up the top of the soil stopping water from being drawn to the surface by capillary action and evaporating. Harvest The harvest should be doing well, providing you with both fresh vegetables and vegetables to store over winter. When you harvest your potatoes take care to remove all the tubers. Any left will not only sprout next year and become a weed but will also be a reservoir for disease and potato blight spores. It’s often worth forking over a few days after harvesting potatoes because more seem to miraculously appear. If blight has struck your potatoes the best method to preserve the crop is to remove the haulm and dispose of it then leave the potatoes in the ground for a fortnight to stop the spores getting onto the tubers. It’s best to harvest potatoes fairly early in the day, rinse them off as they come from the ground and then leave in the sunlight for a day to thoroughly dry off and harden the skins before storing. Sowing There are still quite a few things you can sow in August: Lettuce (sow a hardy variety for winter use), Spring Onions (White Lisbon winter hardy), Radishes, Spinach, Turnips, Green Manure, Chinese cabbage, Kohlrabi. 36
Cultivating Runner beans that have reached the top of their supports will benefit from having the growing tip pinched out. Keep on top of the weeds, it really is far easier to hoe them as small seedlings than as grown plants. Even if you can not see any weeds, hoeing will actually be killing tiny seedlings you have not noticed and will be helping reduce moisture loss as I said above. Keep your tomato sideshoots in check, you want tomatoes not masses of foliage. Stopping is the process of cutting off the growing tip so the plant’s energy is not diverted into foliage from fruit. Ensure they are watered regularly, drying out prevents the plant from taking up sufficient calcium and the deficit causes blossom end rot. Keep feeding your tomatoes, we demand a lot from them and need to keep them well fed. Ensure good ventilation. It can get incredibly hot in a greenhouse with strong sun and scorch your plants. You should also consider shading the house either with blinds or films or with a shading wash.

Whitlenge diary August The last month of summer, it’s hard to be believed when surrounded by lush foliage and flowers but plant growth really slows down now and many visibly look tired. Keep feeding pots and even shrubs to reward them for their efforts. The good news is that weeding should slow down too from the end of the month. If you can bear to leave your garden in full bloom to holiday elsewhere do arrange for someone to visit and regularly pick your runner beans and sweet peas. If pods and seeds are left to ripen the plants feel they have done their duty and will start to deteriorate. Watering also needs a friendly neighbour’s hand, move all pots and containers into the shade and maybe put in a paddling pool. Indoor plants can sit in the sink or bath; give everything an extra layer of mulch to conserve precious moisture and an extra thorough deadheading before you go. At Whitlenge the herbs are at their peak and this is the best time to pick and dry them for the winter store cupboard. Pick on a warm mid morning to be at their most efficacious. To dry them keep them out of sunlight as
this extracts and evaporates essential oils. Choose a warm dry dark room with adequate ventilation, hang stems in small bunches tied with string should the situation be dusty cover with paper bags. If you wish to store in jars use dark glass not plastic or metal as this destroys the chemistry of the herbs. Another way simple way of preserving is to add a few fresh sprigs to bottles of oil or vinegar. We can still sow Parsley in pots indoors for winter and also pot up chives, mint and lemon Balm for the windowsill.
Keep topping up the ponds and birdbaths with water. Birds still need our help with feeding as at this time as they are coping with their young offspring and tend to have a summer moult at this time so extra nutrients are valuable. As we all cope with our offspring in summer the garden is the best place for them, somewhere to dig, play and run, hoping they will not cause us to summer moult !

Trinity Methodist Church to join in Heritage Day The National Heritage Weekend this year will take place on September 11 and 12, and Kidderminster’s Methodists (and all those who may in earlier years have been associated with George Street, Mill Street or Birmingham Road churches) are being invited to make this a weekend of memories by contributing photographs, reminiscences, memorabilia and so on for display at Trinity Methodist Church. The church will be open on Saturday 10 am – 4 pm and on Sunday 12.30 pm – 4 pm. Trinity was opened in 1976 to replace the three earlier churches, and there must be many families who attended those churches or whose forebears were associated with them. Rev. Mary Austin, Trinity’s minister, says: “I’m sure that many families in the Kidderminster area and beyond will have mementoes, hidden away, that relate to Trinity and the three earlier Kidderminster churches. We would like to put them on display and bring back the connections that once existed.” Methodist people have always been known for their involvement in local and national politics and social work, and Ann Lyman, who is co-ordinating the exhibition, believes that there will be other families
Summer Bands are back! Music lovers are in for a treat with this year’s Summer Programme of outdoor concerts organised by Wyre Forest District Council. In total 14 FREE concerts are open to anyone wanting to enjoy a Sunday afternoon listening to live music in great local venues. Over at Bewdley, the beautiful QEII Jubilee gardens provide the perfect backdrop for a series of 5 concerts, beginning with a concert from The Dublin Jacks (Irish/Folk music) sponsored by ‘The Friends of Bewdley Museum’ on 1st August. 8th August sees a first time visit from ‘Holborne Brass Ensemble’, followed by an appearance on 15th August from local musician Katy Bennett who will 40
