Welcome… The magazine is now being distributed to outlets in Cleobury, Tenbury, Bridgnorth, pubs and retail establishments around the region, and with the introduction of new features and editorials about local businesses we hope that you have enjoyed last month’s issue. We had a great deal of feedback regarding the speeding article from many readers. Bewdley residents still have the magazine delivered to their door but our focus is to attract a lot more visitors to our fine shops, eating establishments and to the many events, which are taking place throughout the year, which is why we are expanding the area of distribution. A lot of events are taking place within Bewdley town this year and now the roadworks are nearly completed we all must do some catching up by attracting the tourists back here. Winter and the cold days are behind us and we can now focus on outdoor activities and we will be bringing you features on garden centres, and what’s happening around the region.

We had some interesting letters in response to our news feature on speeding in Bewdley last month. Here are just two of the replies sent in to our offices… Dear Sir,

Dear Sir.

Will Cllr. Clee please tell me where, apart from Long Bank and Red Hill, did he and his Worcestershire C.C.Official check on Speeding with their Speed Camera? I am out and about at most times of the day around Bewdley, and did not notice your presence. Or perhaps you did it at 4 AM on a Sunday morning? I say this because, as a motorist myself (indeed as a professional driver for 20 years), and therefore well versed in judging vehicle speeds without cameras, then you must be sadly mistaken if you think that traffic does not regularly exceed the speed limits in our area. One particular place to mention is almost right outside my door in Welch Gate, where traffic regularly exceeds the speed limit both up and down the street. Just lately, because of the roadworks in town, the squeal of brakes and skidding is heard due to downbound traffic from Winbrook suddenly finding a queue of traffic ahead of them in Welch Gate. There have been minor accidents, not reported to the police, but certainly the insurance companies will know about them. If they can't stop in time THEN THEY ARE SPEEDING. I don't need a Camera to tell me that. And where are you (and the Police) when, on a daily basis, especially in darkness, when motorists and mini motor cyclists use the bottom end of Richmond Road in the wrong direction. It is a one way street DOWN, not up as some interpret it. But I expect it will take a fatality for anybody to be vaguely interested… So please don't feel too smug about your little accomplishments. Believe me, I am not reassured about your No Speeding claims. Yours David Smith

I read your article on speeding in the local area and it seems nigh on impossible to me to achieve anywhere near any of the speed limits let alone exceed them due to the shocking state of the roads which are littered with potholes everywhere.

Address supplied 6

If Councillor Clee says that 28 teams had filled in 9.000 potholes in one week in February that equates to 321 a day! I personally haven’t seen evidence of any of these “teams” doing such sterling work. Perhaps the good Councillor can tell us the locations of all this industry? As a motorist and a motorcyclist I am sick and tired of being preached at by these petit bureaucrats sounding off enjoying the sound of their own importance every five minutes - guess they believe they can also justify the rise they have approved for Council Tax recently. Try getting them to get off their lazy fat asses and do something useful for a change. Whilst writing you may find you get a better response if you print the correct e.mail address when you are inviting comment! - Or maybe that is a deliberate ploy to avoid any adverse publicity? The Big Fish Angler Extraordinaire

Thank heaven that winter is over at last! Now with the rest of nature fish are beginning to wake up and as they do they will feed like mad! Most anglers at this time of year, especially now rivers are shut till June 16th, will be heading to their local stillwaters in search of carp. My method at this time of year for this species is a small PVA bag of bait with a couple of pieces of sweetcorn on the hair-rig. But here at SBS Baits we have a super bait for you to buy which will give you a real edge. We make boilies shaped like sweetcorn to put in PVA bags and poppers to put on the hair-rig. These are highly flavoured with sweetcorn flavour and believe me are actually better than the real thing with the added bonus they withstand the attention of small fish a lot better than real sweetcorn so fishing more effectively for longer. Only this past week Chris Lowe one of our field testers caught a 47lb mirror carp on these baits. Also Andy Walker and myself have been enjoying some great sport on these baits at Willow Marsh, a local water full of carp to over 20lbs.

8

The 47lb carp caught by Chris Lowe on SBS baits recently

But obviously carp are not the only fish to be waking from this extreme winter. Perch are another species that will feed well over the next few weeks and what better bait to use than a nice juicy lobworm? And what better timing to get this bait when you are thinking of starting the spring garden chores. I personally like to fish for perch with a small feeder full of red maggots with a whole or the head of a lobworm on a size 6 or 8 hook. Furnace Mill and Willow Marsh both have a good head of specimen perch to over 3lbs so they are both well worth a look? Another great favourite of mine at this time of year is chub and orfe and these can be taken up in the water on “sprayed maggots”. Simply spray maggots into the swim and fish shallow on a single or double maggot anything from six inches to four feet deep under a waggler float. Sometimes it will take you two hours to get the fish to come up in the water taking the loose feed as it falls through the water but when they come up it’s some of the most exciting fishing of the spring period. Also don’t forget our monster catfish in the area from Shatterford, Townsend Farm and Poole Hall all have cats over 50lbs - yes 50lbs. There is one in Shatterford over 70lbs so if you want your string pulled then this is the place to head. Most of the big cats are taken on livebait (available from the water) halibut pellets or catfish boilies or can you believe it a whole tin of luncheon meat. Now that’s what you call a serious bait! I love this time of year for as well as the fishing there are so many other things to see on the bankside. Water voles are common at Moorlands near Hartlebury, deer will feed out of you hands at Shatterford and the birdlife at Furnace Mill in the middle of the Wyre Forest is simply incredible. What a great sport angling is. In fact its well worth introducing a friend or one of the family to angling this coming summer.

A business blossoming as spring arrives in Stourport Whatever the occasion all of us at sometime have been into a flower shop and looked at the bouquets of beautiful blooms. Weddings, Birthdays and anniversaries command the times we focus on buying flowers but why not make it a weekly event to brighten up your rooms in your home. There is nothing more attractive than a vase of blooms in a room with the vibrant colours and the heady perfumes to bring to life a lounge or dining room. The male of the home could participate in this romantic gesture, whether for your wife or partner; a fond way of showing one’s

feelings whilst adding that touch of colour not only to a room but to one’s life. It is well documented that Elton John had fresh flowers delivered to his homes every day and I am not suggesting we take it to that extreme but once a week would enliven the spirit of romance. Such a little price to pay for love. Flowers, on the whole, are not my specialist subject. When it comes to choosing one’s blooms, help is at hand from any experienced florist.

14

As an independant florist, Nicky is an experienced florist who owns her own shop and will help anyone choose the right bouquets and bunches for that special occasion, whether it is a funeral, wedding or anniversary, to advice on arrangements or the colours you should be choosing for a loved one.

District News Round-up

A

multi-million pound regeneration project is a step closer after Wyre Forest District Council agreed to sell land in Bewdley. The move means that the redevelopment at the heart of Bewdley town centre to create a new health centre, library, refurbished St George’s Community Hall, homes (including affordable housing), shops and a new public square can move forward. The developers, Matrix Medical, had requested that the Council sell land in Load Street car park to make way for the new library. The authority has now agreed to sell the land subject to planning permission and that new car parking spaces are provided at Dog Lane. The redevelopment would see a new public space created where the current Load Street car park is situated. If the plans go ahead the overall number car parking spaces would increase, with additional spaces being created in Gardeners Meadows and the relaying of Dog Lane car park. The public toilets would also be refurbished. It is anticipated that a planning application will be submitted later this year. Councillor Anne Hingley, Wyre Forest District Council’s Cabinet Member for Legal and Corporate Services said: “This is an important opportunity for Bewdley and we are delighted to be able to support it in this way. With local government and public sector partners joining up to support a private sector initiative, the project is moving forward and it promises to bring a great deal of investment to the town.” hile the date for this year’s general election is not yet known, Wyre Forest District Council is urging residents not to wait until the date has been announced before they secure their right to vote.

W

“The time between the date of the general election being announced and the last chance to register to vote can be a matter of a few days,” warns Ian Miller, Chief Executive and Returning Officer for 18

Wyre Forest. He added, “If you are not on the electoral register, you won’t be able to vote. There will be district council elections on 6th May and the deadline for registering to vote at them is Tuesday 20th April.” Registering to vote only takes a few minutes. You can print off a form from www.aboutmyvote.co.uk , the website of the independent elections watchdog, the Electoral Commission. Or you can contact Wyre Forest District Council by email at electoral@wyreforestdc.gov.uk or by telephone on 01562 732739.

M

ore elderly, disabled and vulnerable people will be able to remain in their own homes in 2010/11, thanks to funding from Wyre Forest District Council. The authority has agreed to top up government funding for grants for adaptations to properties. These are known as Disabled Facilities Grants. In 2010 / 11 a total of £800,000 is available for adaptation work and a further £120,000 for vulnerable households to carry out essential home maintenance through interest free loans. This year the Council, working with Community Housing Group and the North Worcestershire Care and Repair Agency, will have delivered more than 200 grants to households requiring adaptations. This essential work can really improve a person’s quality of life and often enables someone to remain in their own home. The Care and Repair Agency is based at Community Housing Group’s offices and they can be contacted on 01562 733217. The agency works closely with the Occupational Therapy service to identify people requiring works and can also provide advice about home safety and security and minimising slips, trips and falls. From 1st April the Care and Repair service will be delivered by a new service “Worcestershire Care and Repair” managed by Festival Housing. It will still be located at Community Housing Group offices.

Head and Shoulders Above the Boys Jasper the Giraffe at West Midland Safari Park famed for his handsome stance and friendly nature towered over four budding football stars from The Bewdley School and Sixth Form Centre, when they visited this week to show off their new sports kit. The school approached West Midland Safari Park at the start of the School’s new term in

September to request help in updating some of its teams kit and the Park jumped at the chance. The student teams play in the Wyre Forest District League where the boys – Alfie Sylvester holding the ball and Will Downes - wore the kit for the first time this week in their fixture against Wolverley – which resulted in a 6 – 0 win. Meanwhile, it does seem that the girls – Molly Maguire left and Libby Pountney right - really are head and shoulders above the boys on this occasion as they have had even more success so far; winning the district 7 a-side floodlit league and reaching the 4th round of the National 11 a-side competition. The Park’s PR Officer, Wendy Jackson, who has been working with the School said, “This was an ideal opportunity for us to work with one of our local schools and to be part of their advance plans to be transformed into a 21st century facility with access for community use. The new kits look great and we wish them all a very successful season”. West Midland Safari & Leisure Park is open daily until Friday, 5th November 2010. Standard admission costs £12.95 for adults, £11.50 for children. A family saver ticket costs £44.00, which admits two adults and two children. Admission costs also include a free return ticket. Amusement rides charged extra in all cases.

Head and shoulders above them all, Jasper the Giraffe with students left to right: Molly Maguire (13), Will Downes (14), Alfie Sylvester (14) and Libby Pountney (15). 20

On your bike

Discovering a company on your doorstep which has the credentials for selling a product which is environmentally friendly, whilst persuading those who may not be as fit to take to the road, on a bike. No more expensive fuel bills, except for a few pence per day to recharge the batteries, for local journies an electric bike may be the alternative transport solution. Electric bicycles are very similar to a conventional bikes in construction but have been fitted with a motor, controller and a battery to assist the cyclist. The models vary as to the position of the motors and the batteries, being either a 24 volt or 36 volt Lithium. Of course the environment is important, so is having the green credentials but lets not forget about having fun. Getting out and about you will have the pleasure of riding a powered machine, similar to a moped, but without the noise, fumes and cost of registering it, MOT, Road tax and is treated just like an ordinary bicycle. Most of the non-electrical parts are

22

standard cycle parts so regular servicing, replacing the tyres or brakes are inexpensive compared to other forms of transport. So why an electric bike? It is said that a conventional bike keeps you fitter, but that is of course depends how much, if at all it is being used. Riding an electric bike is a real pleasure, even in hilly country, so many owners are more inclined to use them. If you are, or have been a regular cyclist but are beginning to find it too much, then you must road test an electric bike. So why come to OnBike to road test and buy your electric bike? They have a whole range of quality bikes from various manufactures. The staff at OnBike are all electric bike enthusiasts with an extensive knowledge of the e-bike market and are happy to ride electric bikes themselves. They are the organiser of the world’s premier electric bike rally, The “Tour de Presteigneso they are enthusiastic, helpful and highly trained specialists. OnBike will not be beaten on price or quality and you could save up to 40% on the government cycle scheme! Give OnBike a call now on 01299 251514 or visit the web site at www.onbike.co.uk

Pub and Club Regatta is Coming In 2009, with 59 participating teams, Bewdley’s Pub and Club Regatta was the biggest of its kind in the UK. This year, the event aims to be even bigger as Bewdley Rowing Club aims to attract 80 teams. The Pub and Club Regatta dates back to before the Second World War and so do the boats used for it. Historically, the event kick-started Bewdley’s Carnival Week, and took place in the weekend before the town’s procession. Initially only a handful of crews raced, but the event began to take prominence in 2008 when 43 crews entered the competition and even more interest shown the following year.

of the Pub and Club Regatta. With bar, BBQ, music and a history of good weather, it’s a fun day by the river for friends and family too. What’s in it for you? Four weeks of fun on the water, see Bewdley from another perspective, get fit(ter), enjoy the use of the rowing club’s bar and gym and, a prize of a free year’s membership for the winners of the men’s, women’s and mixed competitions, all for which there has been a healthy number of entrants (some in fancy dress!) in the last couple of years. Pub and Club rowers who choose to stay on as members get the chance to race at other venues. Previous Pub and Club participants have gone on to compete all over

What is Pub and Club? Teams of four (all-male, all-female and mixed crews are welcome), who have little or no rowing experience are taught the very basics of the sport over four weeks. Within six sessions, you should be competent enough to row along the river in Bewdley. Training will culminate with knock-out races on Saturday 5th June, the day the country, including; the Boat Race course on the River Thames in London and even the New Danube in Vienna! One man, Steve Price (pictured with Lord Coe), who was introduced to the sport through the Pub and Club Regatta now has his sights set on rowing for Team GB at the Olympic Games in London.

Banter from the Allotment

Fred’s shed

Advice from the allotment

A yearly stroll through the season on Fred’s allotment Every month I will be bringing banter from the allotment, giving tips and advice on what to grow and how to grow it, a few tales all with a light hearted twist. Having had such a harsh winter it’s now time to get to grips with readying the ground in preparation for the summer ahead. An exciting time when the fruits of the next eight months labours will produce an abundance of fruit, veg and flowers. Nothing is set in stone when it comes to allotments or gardening in general with some of us wanting to grow vegetables to accompany any meal, flowers to grace any room or fruit, such as rasberries or strawberriess to whip up that special pudding. Finding an allotment can be a bit daunting but have a stroll down to one which is local to you and have a chat with some of the allotment holders. If any plots are available contact your local council and get all the details. Remember, any garden is a commitment and time must be set aside to tend and care for it but as well as the produce harvested there are benefits of being out in the open air, excise with digging, tending and harvesting and above all the social side of meeting local people and being part of the community of allotment holders. So you have got your plot and it looks just like a field. Daunting to think you now have to dig it over, get rid of all the weeds and prepare the ground ready for planting. We need to leave a strip of uncultivated ground at one end so as we can put a small shed (if we are allowed), construct a composting box and sit and admire our labours. What ever you decide to grow you will need to 30

prepare the ground and there is no easy way to to do this but to start at one end and dig each spadefull over. At the same time we may as well dig in some manure. This is available from your local stables and is quite cheap. You have to supply your own bags and dig it out from a pile but an alternative can purchased from a local supplier but will cost more. Start digging by making the spade go into the ground the full depth of the face. Turn it over onto the soil in front of you forming a trench. Break down any large lumps of soil with the edge of the spade and remove all the grass and weeds to leave bare soil. Work along the row from one direction till you get to the end. You should have a trench where the soil has been removed into which we will sprinkle our manure or fertiler. Start the next row by turning the soil into the manured trench and continue to the end. Repeat this process until the ground has been turned over. “Did I tell you when I started my first allotment. It was just after the war and…” Yes you did Fred many times. Perhaps we will leave it till another day.

Rays Farm Country Matters is celebrating its 20th year! To mark this occasion we have opened a new sweet shop, lots of delicious and locally made sweets to sample on your walk around the animals.

For toddlers we have an indoor play area just for little ones. Our new menu reflects the need for children size meals – a smaller baked potato, half a bacon sandwich, a cooler hot chocolate. Rays Farm Country Matters has evolved with children in mind, a field of friendly goats to stroke and pet, a small animal barn to view rabbits, guinea pigs, and baby goats, easy view owl pens, (The largest privately owned owl collection in Shropshire), and plenty of shortcuts back to the main farm yard. 32

If your children have not used up enough energy finding all the wood sculptures in the woods our new wood play area will finally tire them out – While adults enjoy a cream tea or bacon sandwich! Come and meet Humpty Dumpty the wood carving, Pollyanna the donkey, Cyril the squirrel, Rodney the cockeral, Mary the goat, Peach and Yoshi the kids, and Albert the barn owl. We are however an attraction for all ages, with or without children. Rays Farm is a family run business and has just been joined by Tom, grandson of the owners, Frank and Rose Cartwright.

Garlic Chicken Cook Time: 25 min Level: Easy Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 4 skin-on, boneless chicken breasts (about 11/2 pounds) Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper 2 heads garlic 4 sprigs fresh rosemary 4 slices sourdough bread, grilled or toasted 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar

Directions Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Heat the olive oil in a large ovenproof skillet over medium-high heat. Season the chicken with salt and pepper and cook, skin-side down, until browned, about 5 minutes. Separate the heads of garlic into cloves but do not peel. Flip the chicken; add the garlic and rosemary to the skillet and transfer to the oven. Roast until the chicken is cooked through but still moist, 15 to 20 more minutes.

34

Bewdley Museum opens for 2010 programme On Friday 2nd April, the doors open at Bewdley Museum for a great 2010 programme. Last year more than 108,000 visitors enjoyed a visit to this popular local attraction to see the improvements made to the facilities and displays funded by the Heritage Lottery. Ruth Finney, Museum Development Officer said, “For 2010, we have a busy and varied programme lined up which we hope will attract even more visitors to the museum. The fun starts with an Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday 4th April between 11am and 3pm, followed by Easter themed craft activities during the holiday period. Families can also enjoy two new exhibitions of local interest that are open daily between 10am and 4pm in the museum galleries.”

Photograph shows David Darby, Museum Technician and Councillor Marcus Hart, making a besom broom - one of the new craft demonstrations introduced this year.

Demonstrations of traditional crafts in practice have always been part of the museum’s activities. It is one of only two places in the country where ropes are made using traditional equipment. There will be even more to see and learn this season as brick making, besom brooms and willow weaving demonstrations have been introduced. Councillor Marcus Hart, Wyre Forest District Council Cabinet Member for

Bewdley’s Traditional Victorian Tearooms After opening last May, husband and wife team, Karen and Mark have created a true Victorian Tearoom in Welch gate Bewdley. Grannystap, with its Victorian decor and furniture, antique curios adorning the walls, take us back to an era of afternoon tea with home made Victorian Sandwich, a sponge cake filled with fresh butter cream and Strawberry jam, dainty cucumber sandwiches, the finest leaf teas served in fine bone china cups in a wonderful atmosphere, served by Karen, dressed in a traditional Victorian uniform.

Mark, who has been a chef for twenty years grew up in Spetchley on a farm where all his meals were prepared and cooked by his Grandmother while Karen descends from a family of Scottish bakers. Working together they have established another successful tearoom in Bewdley, where the produce is sourced locally for the varied menu which the Victorians would have enjoyed.

Hard Drives The Weakest Link? In these digital days, it is quite normal to find a family’s entire music and photo collection stored away in the deepest recesses of a laptop or pc’s hard drive, but if we adhere to the Law of Sod, you can guarantee there will be “complications” the day you buy a pack of discs, memory stick or external hard drive to back them all up....

standard only a few years ago. We’ve also seen a move from 8” discs to 5 ¼” to 3 ½” (in fact, laptop hard drives use a 2 ½” disc platter), so where does that leave us, the humble user ?? Well, it’s all very nice having your personal data stored in one easy to access location, but if it fails – where does that leave you ??

So, why the worry ?

A few years ago, British Gas spent a shed-load of cash to try and raise awareness across the country (and no doubt a few extra pounds coz let’s face it folks, they need it !!) on how vulnerable Gas Boilers are and do we in fact know the EXACT moment they’re going to fail, which of course we DO NOT !! If you’re a regular traveller you will have probably seen one of their enormous cloth posters draped over a building near Junction 2 of the M5….

First, we need to look at the cruel irony of hard drives, then some background information and finally, a few easy solutions.

Let’s look at a typical computer (tower, base unit, pc, “the box” - whatever you want to call it !!). The basic components are; power supply, processor, memory, motherboard, hard drive and optical drive (dvd-rom etc). All of these items can be replaced In a lot of respects, Hard Drives are like your gas quite readily, but the data stored on your hard drive boiler, none of us really know when they’re going Local Times Crossword CANNOT as it only exists on your machine’s hard to fail.
